More Radios, Fewer Chips: Why Wireless Integration is Hot

Without a radio, your cell phone is a small computer that can't show web pages, check email or even make phone calls. In a sense it's BrickBreaker playing brick. While it may come as a surprise to learn that it's radios that do the heavy lifting to keep us connected to GPS satellites, cellular networks, nearby Wi-Fi and in some cases network television, so it is with laptops as well, especially those aiming to be Netbooks or cloud PCs.

In fact there are too many radios, especially on high-end devices. And it's only going to get worse in coming years as 4G networks using LTE or WiMAX proliferate. Sure WiMAX will begin as a data card inserted into a laptop much like my beloved 3G modem, but in time it will find itself in handheld devices including mobile phones (or so vendors tell me). Meanwhile current 3G and 2G networks will still have to be supported because carriers roll out new networks slowly. Add in radios for other wireless devices, and problems start to emerge.

That's why chip vendors, from established players like Broadcom and NXP to startups like Wavesat and Altair, are hoping to put multiple radios onto one chip. And many of them are turning to software to do it. NXP, for example, has created a software-defined modem that can toggle among LTE, HSPA, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS and GSM networks.

Carsten Schimanke, marketing manager for business line cellular systems with NXP, says that company's decision to build multiple modems onto one chip was an attempt to do three things: to make it easier for carriers to support old and new networks; to make it possible for a phone to operate on multiple networks around the world; and to make it easier for handset makers to use one type of network for certain applications, such as offloading voice onto a 2G network while data goes over a faster 3.5G network.

Outside of the cell phone market, there's an emerging class of Internet-connected devices, such as the Dash Express and the Kindle from Amazon, that also can take advantage of multiple radios on a chip. Raj Singh, CEO and president of Wavesat, a startup company pushing a chip that combines Wi-Fi and WiMAX (and next year will add LTE), points out that these devices need connectivity everywhere in order for them to work. For example in places where a cell network is unavailable but a Wi-Fi network is, such as inside an office building, an Internet-connected device could use that signal.

Obviously the world is moving to ubiquitous broadband with consumer-oriented products, but once the radios are small enough and cheap enough to work anywhere, the different layers of wireless broadband networks could be used in everything -- from getting more real-time traffic information to controlling a city's watering schedule. No single network covers the world, a country or in many cases even a metropolitan area, so multiple radios on one chip might be the future of the chip industry.

I literally mean that.

The idea popped in my head a few days ago and i thought it would be quite interesting to see how doable it was.

The hardware used is a Dikom (Broadcom) Usb bluetooth dongle, a Nokia E61i ( Symbian S60 3rd ) and tested on a Dell Inspiron C521 and a PackardBell Easynote R ( both on Hardy Heron 8.04).
It is also assumed that the dongle is connected and the computer can use bluetooth normally.

So looking around for projects that had already done this, i came across three main ones.

Bluepad ( which i successfully installed on both systems, but on the Dell it always failed to find devices to connect and on the Easynote it always failed to connect to the devices found. Troubleshooting the app goes beyond the scope of this material).

Amora (installed correctly on the phone, altogether with the required python shell, and properly compiled on the system but the app on the phone never replied to the BT connections from the server).

Last but not least anyRemote - worked like a charm.
And that's the one i picked.

The applications to install can be downloaded from the Sourceforge page of the project.
There is a .jar and .jad version to be installed on the phone (either sent by BT or cable ).
A server application, of which you can download the source and compile it or the premade deb.
If you need the 64bit version ( like me in both cases ), here's that here's that.

You can get extra add-ons such as a Gnome or KDE front-end and so on.

The Gnome interface ( ganyremote, creative , i know), is quite intuitive once you fire it up.
The source comes with a set of configurations that you can feed to the app.
If you just want to use the binary from command line the syntax is the following:

anyremote -f /path_to_config.cfg

The computer is not waiting for connections to which it will serve an interface based on the config file given to anyremote.

Launch the application on the phone. You can search for new BT devices until you find the computer, connect if/when found.
You can manually insert the required bluetooth address that you want the phone to connect to:

btspp://XXXXXXXXXXXX:19

where the XXXXXXXXXXXX is the Bt address of the dongle, which can be found with

hcitool dev

or

socket://ip_address:port

if your phone supports wifi. I did not test that. Maybe in the next few days.
That's all foks.

The big winner is Infineon with four chips, including GPS and 3G radio. Little-known chip firm TriQuint also won, with three power amplifiers inside the phone. Wi-Fi was once again provided by Marvell, but Broadcom scored low, with only a touchscreen controller and no GPS (which we had been expecting).

Most impressive was that the phone contains 19 high-value chips. For silicon vendors the iPhone represents an opportunity to push high-margin chips reserved for high-end smartphones into the average cell phone. Readers of this blog may take a BlackBerry or Nokia N95 for granted, but middle America or even Europe doesn't always see the point. But if housewives and teens clamor for iPhones, chip makers will cheer.

That's because the iPhone, in addition to making wireless broadband consumption more accessible to people, will drive smartphone adoption. And smartphones can contain up to six times the amount of silicon found in an entry-level phone. Despite TI not having a large presence in the iPhone, Bill Krenik, CTO of Texas Instruments' wireless division (the second-largest wireless chip company behind Qualcomm), says the adoption of the iPhone is a good thing for chip makers everywhere.

"It's a lot more fun to build iPhones and other high-end products than a simple voice-only handset because there's a lot more design sophistication and exciting features like high-end graphics, but from a business angle there's more semiconductor content for us to go after," Krenik said. "There has been a lot of negative sentiment about what more can you really do on a phone, but we've ignored that."

David Carey, president of the firm that conducted an iPhone teardown, Portelligent, said part of the risk point for the wireless industry was that everyone was satisfied -- that nothing that would lull consumers into a more feature-rich phone. "If the iPhone does sort of capture the public's imagination, it'll have a direct impact on whether the cell-phone industry is a growth market for the chip business, or it stagnates," he said.

Carey has seen the total space devoted to silicon inside a cell phone shrink as the radios and applications processors became more integrated. Qualcomm and Freescale offer such integrated platforms, while many handset makers still offer an integrated brain and radio for cell phones, even on their higher-end phones like the Samsung Instinct (although phones like the Instinct still offer plenty of other opportunities for chip vendors). Carey points to HTC, Motorola, LG and Samsung as handset companies who tend to consolidate silicon, and offers Nokia and Apple as examples of firms that separate the brains of the phone from the communications chips.

The move toward better integration is the norm in the industry, but despite the rise in the number of cell phones sold and an increase in the sales of wireless chips, it has led to lowered prices per unit. In 2004 when iSuppli started gathering data on the topic, about $23.77 was spent on silicon inside each handset on average. That number dropped to $18.65 in 2007. The wireless chip players are relying on handset growth to keep their sales on the rise -- and hoping for next-generation features they can convince consumers and handset makers to buy.

GPS is one such technology gaining in popularity on high-end phones. The iPhone has it, and many software companies are actively trying to make programs and offer services that take advantage of it. Other technologies waiting in the wings are mobile television, which would require chips from Qualcomm in the U.S. or those from Dibcom or Samsung in other countries, and HD video that would require higher-end applications processing such as that offered by Nvidia's APX 2500 or Texas Instrument's OMAP 3. Regardless, the iPhone might do more than make semiconductors fun. It may keep chip vendors happy.

Tech investors were rattled after Nvidia (NVDA) set off a big alarm.

The graphic chip supplier to the PC industry on Wednesday slashed its second-quarter sales forecast to about $912 million, 17% below analysts' estimates. It also said it would take a $150 million to $200 million charge to cover replacement costs of defective chips.

The warning sent Nvidia shares down 31% Thursday and added more pressure to the Nasdaq, which fell 2%, and is now down more than 9% in the past month.

But some analysts think investors overreacted by sending tech stocks down on Nvidia's warning. The company's problems appear to be specific to Nvidia.

"While the company attributed a portion of the miss to global end market weakness, our checks indicate component demand from other chip companies touching the PC end market is stable," JPMorgan analyst Shawn Webster wrote in a report Wednesday.

No.2 rival AMD (AMD), which fell 1% Thursday, likely saw solid demand for graphics chips and probably took some of Nvidia' business in the quarter, analysts says.

Webster downgraded the stock to neutral from buy after concluding that many of Nvidia's problems are company-specific. He says Nvidia started the quarter with a pile of excess graphics chips. This surplus was compounded by increased competition as rivals took market share and capitalized on a shift among computer makers from separate graphics cards to integrated-graphics chips. Nvidia, which commands 80% of the graphics processor market, mostly sells separate graphics cards.

Nvidia spread the blame for the sharp sales decline on a number of factors, including a replacement of bad chips, a soft economy, product delays and price competition. "There's a bit of 'and-the-kitchen-sink' to this," says one Wall Street analyst.

"We knew that the July quarter was going to be choppy, but we didn’t expect this magnitude of bad news so early," Cowen analyst Dan Berenbaum wrote in a note Thursday, referring to the four weeks of business yet to book in Nvidia's second quarter ending July 31.

Berenbaum says the stock is trading like the company is at death's door, but he argues that "the near-term difficulties do not mean that Nvidia is in secular decline."

Despite some rather exciting progress made of late getting Linux to work on the Fujitsu Siemens Amil

Despite some rather exciting progress made of late getting Linux to work on the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A1650, regretably after three weeks of using it, I am back to Vista. The reason for this is my conclusion that running Linux (more specifically, Ubuntu) on the A1650 is a painful process due to the maturity of hardware support. Its (finally) possible to get all the hardware working, unfortunately doing so feels cumbersome and unnatural. The biggest culprits are the graphics card (an ATi x200m) and the wireless (Broadcom 4318 mini PCI) card.

The ATi graphics card has long been criticised as being 'defective by design'. Getting any hardware accelerated graphics on this laptop formerly required running XGl with a long series of complicated hacks and even then it was not possible to run desktop compositing effects like Beryl or Compiz. Eight (or so) Months ago, that changed with a redesign of the X Server (in X.org 7.0) when XGL back rendering was no longer required for hardware accelerated rendering. More than that, it greatly simplified the process meaning even the most inexperienced Linux user could have beautiful desktop effects, in some cases, out of the box. However, due to an annoying glitch somewhere, the ATi restricted drivers caused diagonal tearing whenever a window rapidly refreshed itself.

It says something about the maturity of hardware support under Linux when Vista, commonly (and unjustly) thought of a resource hog, runs better. Anyway, this is all academic now as I have retired my Amilo A1650. Its been a great laptop but after three years it was time to move on. I will play with Linux on my new laptop soon and post the results.

For those who decided Vista doesn't cut it and tried to run Linux on their HP laptops, you might have discovered everything works except WLAN. Well folks, it's possible to make it work and the process can be done by newcomers like me. The workaround applies for HP laptops (DV, TX and ZV series) but also for some Dell, Compaq and Acer laptops.

I can confirm this work on my HP Pavillion dv2422ca with a Broadcom 4321AG card.

[Update: Barron's Eric Savitz suggests here that when DigiTimes writes "total shipments of 3G iPhones are expected to top 10 million units in the third quarter" it means BY the third quarter, not IN the third quarter. We suspect he is right. Headline and body of text corrected accordingly.]

With the simultaneous launch of the iPhone 3G in 22 countries on July 11, Apple's Taiwanese suppiers are anticipating a bigger-than-expected ramp-up in the third quarter of 2008, according to a report Thursday in Taipei-based DigitTimes.

DigiTimes' report is based on an article in the Chinese-language Commercial Times, a publication with unusually good sources among Apple's far-eastern component manufacturers and assemblers. It quotes an unnamed supplier to the effect that these component makers expect to ship 10 million units to Apple before Sept. 30.

Apple's (AAPL) oft-repeated target is to sell 10 million iPhones in all of 2008. As of June 9, the company had sold 6 million first-generation iPhones, according to Steve Jobs. The company reported more than 3.7 million sold in 2007, which means some 2.3 million have already been sold so far this year.

DigiTimes also translates and reprints a list of the iPhone's suppliers that was compiled by Commercial Times. We've copied it below. As AppleInsider notes, Infineon (IFX), Broadcom (BRCM) and Foxconn (Hon Hai) look like the big winners.

Solarflare Communications, a chip startup in Irvine, Calif., has raised $26 million in a third round

Solarflare Communications, a chip startup in Irvine, Calif., has raised $26 million in a third round of funding. That brings the total the company's raised to $126 million, which is a lot of money for a chip startup, even when you consider that the amount includes money raised by Level 5 Networks, which Solarflare acquired in April 2006. But the startup is hoping to use that money to attack a big problem in the data center at prices lower than the current technology offers. And if it succeeds, it'll make computing faster and data center operations more flexible.

Like many other communications chip companies, Solarflare is working on a way to deliver 10 Gigabit Ethernet over copper, which is cheaper than delivering it via fiber. That enables the high-speed transport technology to move outside of the telecommunications networks, where companies such as Infinera are already pursuing 100 Gigabit Ethernet over fiber, and into mass adoption in the data center. Getting the technology into servers at a reasonable cost would create a market 10 times bigger than that of networking switches.

Others chasing mass adoption of 10 GigE on the server side are Intel and Broadcom, which like Solarflare, have controller chips. Broadcom and Solarflare also have PHY chips sampling with customers. Solarflare CEO Russell Stern plans to integrate the PHY with the controller chip in 2009, beating Broadcom to the market. He will use some of the funding for that purpose.

It's likely Broadcom will end up attempting an integrated 10 GigE over copper chip as well. Broadcom doesn't talk about its chips until they're sampling, but the company did make a mint by cornering the market for integrated 1 Gigabit Ethernet chips for servers. However, success for Solarflare or Broadcom is probably three years out and depends on creating an energy-efficient chip at the 32 nanometer process node, according to Bob Wheeler, an analyst at The Linley Group.

Power consumption is a big challenge for these chips because unless it's managed properly, they run too hot for servers and switches. And because technology doesn't stand still in the data center, where virtualization and ever-increasing amounts of data are screaming for fatter pipes, hybrid forms of networking technologies that mix fiber or Fibre Channel with Ethernet are emerging to bridge the Gigabit gap between servers and networking equipment. Broadcom has several products that take advantage of such a hybrid networking environment. Startups such as Arastra and Woven Systems are also in that sector, and may see gains at the expense of a unified 10GigE world, which means Solarflare's market opportunity could fragment if cheap, integrated 10 GigE takes too long.

When I was putting the closing values for the GGSI stocks into my spreadsheet, I thought it was going to be a horrible week. However, only a few stocks had some big-time losses. The index ended up closing lower 15.17 points at 1277.02. That is the lowest close since mid-April. There were 11 gaining stocks and 19 losing stocks.

Biggest winners - Microsoft (5.75%), Boeing (2.68%), Pitney Bowes (1.39%)

Biggest losers - Garmin (-12.52%), Yahoo (-11.23%), Oce (-10.60%)

A lot has been written about the new 3G iPhone, its price and its impact. Now it’s time to shi

A lot has been written about the new 3G iPhone, its price and its impact. Now it's time to shift attention to the most important question about this device: How much money will it make for Apple and its carrier partners?

While I don't have any concrete financial projections, after reading some of Wall Street's better analysis and taking clues from my own sources, I can offer some observations, which I've packaged in a Q&A format here:

Q: Why did Apple agree to a price subsidy?
A: Mass adoption. AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de le Vega told the WSJ that it was all about getting the device to the mass market. "I think this is going to reach people that would otherwise never put $199 into a mobile device," he said.

Q: Is subsidizing the handset going to cost AT&T and other carriers, like UK-based O2 (which is offering a free version with premium packages)?
A: Yes. In the WSJ interview, de la Vega says, "It's going to impact earnings in 2008 and 2009 in a negative way, but will turn very profitable in the long term."

Q: How much of a hit will the subsidy be to AT&T's revenues/earnings?
A: The company says between 10 and 12 cents per share. According to Stifel Nicholas analyst Christopher King, this assumes that AT&T gets around 5.5 million incremental gross subscriber additions and a $200 subsidy per phone in both 2008 and in 2009.

Q: AT&T says the subsidy agreement with Apple will become accretive starting in 2010. Likely?
A: "For AT&T to meet its 2010 accretion goal, we believe the company will have to significantly accelerate its market share over the course of the next 12-24 months, among the most lucrative, post-pay subscriber base," Stifel's King writes in a notes to clients. "With the current levels of wireless penetration, we believe this implies AT&T must take subscribers from other carriers."

I don't see it happening either, especially since other handset makers will undoubtedly have some tricks up their sleeves with which to respond to the iPhone. The window of opportunity to sell a lot of phones for Apple is not unlimited.

Q: How many 3G iPhones does Apple hope to sell?
A: UBS Research estimates that the company is looking to push out between 10 million and 15 million 3G iPhones, based on their checks with vendors and parts suppliers. But even despite the subsidies, UBS analysts expect the final number could be closer to the lower end of that range. By way of comparison, Motorola sold about 11.3 million Razrs the first year -- with subsidies, global distribution and multiple carriers in the very same regions. And that was one of the best-selling phones ever.

Q: How much money can Apple make selling 15 million units?
A: Assuming Apple gets $399 per device from the carriers (using Stifel's math of a $200 subsidy) and most of the devices sold are the low-end model, Apple could make $5.98 billion. Of course, the numbers could be much higher if the high-end model becomes popular. So a reasonable guess would be between $6 billion and $7 billion. This will be a profitable enterprise for Apple, according to analysis of the iPhones parts by research firm Portelligent. The materials currently costs about $170, but that will soon go down to $100 as volumes scale.

Q: Will it impact Nokia and RIM?
A: I wouldn't bet on it, despite the fact that in Nokia's home market of Western Europe, Apple has not only addressed the lack of 3G connectivity but signed some huge distribution deals. At 15 million units, the iPhone will be marginal compared to Nokia's offerings. Nor do I think that RIM will keel over, though I do think this puts the kibosh on RIM's consumer play somewhat.

Q: Who loses?
A: My bet is on Motorola and Palm. Motorola is just a rudderless Titanic right now, and is especially vulnerable because it doesn't have anything that it can use to compete with the likes of an iPhone. Similarly, Palm just doesn't enjoy the cachet it used to, and the lower-priced iPhone makes the $99 Centro look a tad dowdy. Given how much AT&T has riding on the 3G iPhone, I am betting they will purposely promote this to the detriment of others.

Q: What about the iPhone ecosystem -- who's making what inside the 3G iPhone?
A: Infineon is making the baseband and RF transceiver, while Samsung is providing the application provider. Forward Concepts analyst Will Strauss says the GPS chip is based on Broadcom's Global Locate technology (and not a Broadcom chip, as we had initially reported) that has been licensed by Infineon. Time to re-check that information again.

PS: I promise this is the last iPhone post till all the hoopla dies down.

Here's something funny, this guy smokes more weed than the average varsity first year, and I should know! Drugging people is obviously wrong though, so does he deserve to go down...I'm always very prudent when casting judgement about something like this, especially when it's based on only one article. It is funny in a very dark way though so that's why I posted it. Hope you like it:

June 5, 2008, 4:37 pm

New Tech Sales Tactic: Drugging Customers?

Ever think that your business’s tech chief must have been on drugs when he bought a particular piece of computer equipment? Turns out he may have been.
cocktail_art_160_20080605163649.jpg
Think twice before accepting a drink from a tech vendor

Henry Nicholas, the co-founder of Broadcom, which makes the chips that power all sorts of tech equipment, was indicted today on a litany of drug-related charges. Among them: Slipping ecstasy into the drinks of “technology executives and representatives who worked for Broadcom’s customers” without their knowledge. The indictment doesn’t say which customers Nicholas allegedly drugged, but it does mention one incident in New Orleans in early 2000. (The indictment, which you can read here, doesn’t allege that any customers or partners were tricked into business deals.)

The indictment alleges that Nicholas distributed ecstasy, cocaine and methamphetamine, that he hired prostitutes for himself and customers, and that he smoked so much pot on one private plane trip that the pilot had to put on an oxygen mask. (The Journal’s Law Blog has more details, including the news that Nicholas’s lawyers haven’t returned the Journal’s phone calls and that Nicholas checked into rehab in April.)

In the meantime, we’re left to wonder whether secretly drugging customers is a common sales tactic for tech companies. It would certainly explain why so many corporate tech projects fail — and give tech departments a handy excuse.

Here’s a no-win situation for an attorney: What do you do when a your client, the founder and

Here's a no-win situation for an attorney: What do you do when a your client, the founder and former CEO of a billion-dollar public company, is supposedly being shown on YouTube using illegal drugs?

According to a motion filed by federal prosecutors on Thursday, the quandary arose last summer when such videos were posted of Henry T. Nicholas, III, the co-founder and former CEO of Broadcom (BRCM), the high-profile, fabless semiconductor company based in Irvine, California.

(Last Thursday Nicholas pleaded not guilty to two federal indictments, one charging options backdating and the other conspiracy to distribute drugs, including MDMA (ecstacy), methamphetamine, and cocaine.)

In August 2007 Nicholas attorney Susan Szabo of Munger Tolles & Olson wrote e-mails and faxes to YouTube and parent Google (GOOG) demanding they take down a video of Nicholas, which, she said, invaded his privacy.

A YouTube support rep e-mailed Szabo back explaining that the company couldn't process a privacy complaint "based on what a video 'purports' to portray," so he invited her to confirm that the video really did show her client in a private setting without his consent.

Szabo complied: "I can confirm that the video portrays my client and that the video was taken surreptitiously in his bedroom, without his knowledge and consent, and that any distribution of the video is without his consent."

Now, in a motion asking that Nicholas be detained pending his trial on the two indictments, the government cites the video - which, it claims, shows Nicholas using drugs at a time when he knew the government was investigating him and when he was publicly denying drug use to the media - as tending to show that Nicholas presents a risk to the community and a flight risk. Prosecutors write: "There can be no doubt it was defendant in the video as his attorneys sent an e-mail and letter to YouTube confirming that the person in the video using drugs is, in fact, defendant." (The judge ultimately ordered certain "home detention" measures for Nicholas.)

An e-mail to attorney Szabo was not immediately returned. Nicholas's criminal defense attorney, Brendan Sullivan, wrote: "I adhere to a policy that I should not discuss matters in litigation."

The government's 18-page detention motion, with 100 pages of appended exhibits, also levels a variety of other unflattering accusations beyond those already contained in the indictments. During a June 2007 flight on one of his private jets, for instance, Nicholas allegedly accused a "longtime friend, personal attorney, and employee" of wearing a "wire"; threatened to "chase him to the ends of the earth" if the friend "screwed" him; and then struck the friend in the face, causing him to fall to the ground.

The papers also allege that in November 2007 Nicholas, while driving with his son, crashed his black Lamborghini into a lamp post while returning from a Shake Shack. He switched cars with a security staffer in his convoy and then left the scene while the staffer waited for the police and took the rap. Through an attorney, Nicholas later admitted to local police that he'd been driving the Lamborghini, but claimed that the security staffer had suggested Nicholas drive home for "security reasons," and that Nicholas had never intended that the staffer take responsibility for the crash. (The staffer, according to prosecutors, has refused to testify about the incident notwithstanding an immunity order, and is currently incarcerated on contempt charges.)

Nicholas stepped down as Broadcom's CEO and co-chairman in 2003, explaining in a statement that he wanted "to attend to serious family matters."

John McCain proposed on Wednesday that Barack Obama join him in a series of ten town hall meetings to discuss current political issues. McCain added that he especially looked forward to debating why the U.S. should continue fighting the war…of 1812.

Broadcom co-founder Henry T. Nicholas III has been indicted on charges that he slipped ecstasy into the drinks of technology executives, maintained a warehouse to store cocaine, and funded drug parties on airplanes. Prosecutors intend to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Dr. Nicholas is guilty…of being the coolest boss ever!

On Monday a Texas judge ordered the immediate return of more than four hundred children taken from a polygamist sect's ranch. Most excited about their return: the children’s husband.

In a speech on Monday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reaffirmed his prediction that Israel will soon disappear from the map. Ahmadinejad added that the only thing stopping Israel from disappearing now is that he lost David Copperfield's phone number.

Human rights lawyers claimed on Monday that the United States is concealing numbers and whereabouts of war prisoners by using military ships as "floating prisons.” The worst human rights violation on the ships: the entertainment is Kathie Lee Gifford.

On Thursday, the U.S. military shot down a ballistic missile in a test near Hawaii. The next goal of the military is to figure out a way to make the interceptor missiles work in December 1941.

After touching down on Mars, the Phoenix Lander has left a single striking footprint-like impression. Responded Jesus: "My lambs, that’s not what happened at all. When there was only one footprint on Mars, it's because I was carrying the NASA robot. Plus I was also hopping."

And finally, sportscaster Jim McKay, the longtime host of ABC's "Wide World of Sports," died Saturday at his Maryland estate at age eighty-six. On his deathbed, McKay finally learned what it meant to experience the agony of defeat.

01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311MCG wlan mini-PCI (rev 01)

Did anyone know that Jeff Spicolli from Fast Times was not only an actual living and breathing human being but eventually changed his name to Henry Nicholas and co-founded Broadcom Corp.? I know right? I thought it was crazy also until I read some of the circus acts this guy pulled over the course of his illustrious career.

I didn't think he could ever overshadow the smoke pouring from that VW micro bus in the Ridge Mont High School parking lot but burning so much rope on your private jet so that the pilot needs to wear a gas mask as to not crash the plane could be the gnarliest thing I've ever heard. Your client seems a bit refined before you sit down and have dinner? No problem, just spike their club soda with Ecstasy pills and they'll be dry humping you for your business in no time, literally!

The receptionist reported that she had on a few occasions had to drop 10 grand in cash off to some local drug dealer that would meet her in the lobby of the building. This son of a bitch is spectacular. I like the flare. The hookers, honk, drugging the clientele puts a nice twist on things. How passé is the typical fraud to which the average CEO partakes in. I bet Enron's Jeff Skilling's drug testing program consisted of simply peeing in a cup.

Rumor has it Broadcom's drug test came in 3 separate parts. First, in less than 12 seconds you had to create a bong from whichever fruit was indigenous to the country which the private jet landed. Second you had to create a smoking apparatus on the back of a moped while driving 40mph on the way to pick up a 19 year old Dominican hooker from some mud hut in Santa Domingo. Last but not least, you had to slip her a pill , get her back on the jet and juggle three 65 Nanometer Single-Chip Bluetooth® 2.1 + EDR Solution for Mobile Handsets while standing on one foot while your other foot's big toe was inserted in the anus of the drugged harlot.

What a sick fuck. I hope they're hiring,

Gambler

There was a saying that two Malaysian could not outsmart one Singaporean; four Singaporean could not

There was a saying that two Malaysian could not outsmart one Singaporean; four Singaporean could not outsmart one Hongkies (Hong Kong) and four Hongkies could not outsmart one Chinese (China). I’m not sure about Chinese against American or Jewish though and please, there’s no racial element in the statement. Take it as a joke if you can’t think in straight line. Of course the above “comparison” referred to corporate-business although I’m pretty sure when comes to politics, the reverse makes more sense.

When you’re into business expansion, please remember to borrow as much as possible. It would be an achievement if you could borrow RM1 billion for your RM2 ringgit shell company. The fact is the more you borrow and the deeper your company is in debt the better. When you owed banks billions of dollars in loan you’re a celebrity, so much so that the banks were so scared of your security they might even provide you bodyguards foc. And if you can further convinced the banks to lend you more money to turnaround your company, you’re basically a genius.

Chances are you would be sentenced to longer jail terms for stealing underwears or shampoo than for owing billions of dollars in debts. There’s very high possibility that you could just walk away a freeman instead if you’d committed such action in Malaysia. Anyway I’ve not read of any local top businessmen did anything similar to Broadcom Corporation’s (Nasdaq: BRCM, stock) co-founder Henry T. Nicholas III, a provider of semiconductors for wired and wireless communications.

Short of committing murder, the successful entrepreneur was indicted on federal narcotics charges that include allegations he slipped ecstasy into the drinks of business associates, maintained a drug warehouse and concealed his illegal conduct with bribes and death threats. Whoa! Al Capone reincarnation! The billionaire also is accused of committing conspiracy, securities fraud and other violations - Broadcom was eventually forced to write down its profits by $2.2 billion in January 2007, believed to be the largest-ever restatement related to improperly accounting for backdated options.

Dr. Nicholas used much of his fortune to fund drug parties in airplanes and luxury homes and to build a secret tunnel and room beneath his mansion in Laguna Hills. The court documents also claim Nicholas hired prostitutes and escorts for himself, his employees and customers and conspired to get illegal prescriptions for drugs such as Valium. In fact, he smoked so much marijuana during a flight on a private jet between Orange County and Las Vegas that the pilot had to put on an oxygen mask.

The drug charges against Nicholas carry a maximum combined sentence of 20 years in prison. He could face up to 340 years in prison on the stock backdating charges. What? Only 20 years for drug offence but 340 years for backdated stock options? You gotta be kidding! Maybe that’s what the PM is trying to do after all. Dig as much as possible because in Malaysia it’s not an offence for politicians to be super rich (remember “Sultan” Zakaria and his palace story) and if you wish to save your arse, you got to put yourself at the same level as Marcos or Suharto. Dr. Nicholas did it at the right time but at the wrong place. Before I sign-off, I managed to make some pocket money scalped Baidu.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: BIDU, stock) yesterday. Can’t let go of such opportunity when the Dow was so bullish, can I?

Broadcom Nunca Nos Pareció Una Compañía Muy Interesante, A La Final, El Desarrollo De Chips No Es Algo Tan Divertido, Aunque Su Cofundador Sí Lo Sea. Henry T. Nicholas Está Bajo Custodia Del FBI Por Haber Dado Bebidas Alcohólicas A Ejecutivos Y Por Mantener Una "Bodega Con Éxtasis, Cocaína Y Metanfetamina". Y Eso No Es Todo, Estas Acusaciones Vienen Después De Haber Puesto Cargos Contra Nicholas Y El CFO, William J. Ruehle Por Conspiración, Fraude Y Cambio De Fechas En Los "Securities". Dicen Que Los Antes Nombrados, El Otro Cofundador, Henry Samueli, Y El Consejero General, David Dull, Falsificaron Los Reportes De Ingresos. ¿Qué Opinas? Ahora Broadcom Ya No Parece Una Empresa Tan Aburrida.

Through the 1990s I watched Henry Nicholas turn Broadcom from a tiny start-up that got going making

Through the 1990s I watched Henry Nicholas turn Broadcom from a tiny start-up that got going making cable modem chips into a fearsome communications chip giant that has caused nightmare to most of its rivals including Intel Corp. The company 48-year-old Nicholas co-founded with Henry Samueli is doing spectacularly, having survived the turn of the century downturn by placing the right bets on market of tomorrow.

Unfortunately, Nicholas isn't doing so well and today turned himself in to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a variety of charges including spiking drinks of other executives with Ecstasy. (The details of the 21-count indictment of fraud, conspiracy and drug charges below the fold.) There is a whole slew of drug-related charges against the man who apparently led a colorful life in Southern California. The biggest one is that he was involved in fraudulently backdating stock options. What a comedown for a man who was the 258 richest American as recently as 2006. He had resigned from Broadcom in 2003 to attend to family matters. His wife filed for divorce in January 2003

I remember reading a profile of Nicholas back in 2000, which made me wonder if there was something seriously wrong with this guy. His assistant had to schedule sleep time for the man, who saw broadband was the single biggest tech trend of our life. "This is the single-largest revolution since the invention of the offset printing press," he told Forbes. Rich Karlgaard of Forbes wrote about Nicholas:

He likes to call company meetings at 11 p.m., and you'd better be monitoring your Blackberry when the call comes. For sport, Nicholas cranks up his Lamborghini to 150mph along the roads near his Orange County, Calif. office. Nick's only weakness is that he could drive himself to burnout.

There is a lot of information to digest about his legal problems. I am embedding the complaints against him in the document in case you want to check them out.

The next story is really out there. The billionaire CEO of Broadcom, Henry T. Nicholas III, has been indicted by the FBI (DOJ) on stupendous charges of trafficking in cocaine, Ecstasy and methamphetamine, spiking employees drinks with drugs, and running underground drug and sex lairs in his homes.

Are they sure he's not a rapper (just kidding). Seriously, this dude must be taking some pure grade drugs to be doing this stuff. Here's hoping he gets sober and gets his life together.

Billionaire Drug Bust

Broadcom's co-founder charged in tawdry narcotics indictment. A technology billionaire was a drug fiend who trafficked in cocaine, Ecstasy, and methamphetamine, spiked the drinks of business associates and employees, hired prostitutes for himself and others, and maintained several narcotics dens, including one in an underground lair at his Los Angeles mansion, prosecutors charge.

In a remarkable federal indictment unsealed today in Los Angeles, Broadcom co-founder Henry T. Nicholas III is portrayed as an out-of-control wild man who scored drug caches for Super Bowl parties and rock festivals and had his dealer invoice him for these illicit purchases.
