According to the most recent Justin.tv blog post, Michael reports that JTV broke the 1,000,000 Registered Users mark on Saturday morning! What fun a statistician could have with the analysis of these 1mn users.

Where are they from? What is the median age? What time of day are users registering? How many of the 90,690 channels are porn? How many of them are rebroadcasting copyrighted movies? How many are rebroadcasting copyrighted Television shows, sports and otherwise? What channels are they watching? How many of the 1mn Registered Users are also Broadcasters? Of those that broadcast, how many are broadcasting interesting content? Ok, well, that's a tough one to tag with a valid statistical hypothesis, so let's back away from the subjective, shall we? How many of those Registered Users come to JTV to watch professional sports, first run movies, porn? How many come to hang out with a broadcaster and chat? How many come in to watch planned content -- a move to Tokyo, a trip to San Francisco, a Cooking Show? How many participate in JTV while at work? How many come to JTV while traveling? How many broadcasters stream while mobile?

Oh, the questions are endless and the potential scenarios are too. I can see a book or a movie or a sitcom being made about all of this, but it would have to include USTREAM.tv and Live.com and Blog.TV and Stickam.com and all the others that are out there offering places for people to broadcast their lives live on the Internet 24/7.

What If?

This one makes me chuckle. What if someone wrote a screen play about Justin.tv that ran in movie theaters across the country, nay, around the world and a multitude of channels broadcast it live on JTV and USTREAM and Stickam and Live.com ... and dipped into movie ticket revenue? Would JTV take the channel down? Would they serve take down notices to their competitor networks? How would it make them feel? Would they understand when someone from one of the other networks said, "Well, we really don't know what is copyright protected and what is not, however we will act immediately on any takedown notice that we receive."

I do have a legitimate question this morning though. A year ago Justin and the guys had sponsor posters hanging from the walls of their Crystal Towers apartment. One of those posters was for the Movie, Disturbia. The JTV crew and the viewers seemed excited about this and I remember that when they headed to the movies to see Disturbia, Justin had to go sans hat cam. There would be no rebroadcasting of this feature film. I wasn't surprised. I don't think anyone was and no one was complaining that they were not going to get to see the movie -- for free on a little video player on their computer.

As I passed over the broadcast of Dark Knight yesterday morning and tuned into a channel that was running an all time great flick, Torah! Torah! Torah! it made me think about the fact that Justin and his team would not infringe on their sponsor's copyright by allowing it to be broadcast on their network. It was admirable, but freely allowing scores of channels to run movies that are not only produced by major studios, but are up on JTV at the same time they release in movie theaters across the US flies in the face of the message they were sending by not going to the movies with the stream running last year.

But I am not here today to be a Negative Nellie. Today is JTV's day to shine, so hat's off to you and now that you've hit this magic milestone have you sent out the press release so that you can get some good coverage? And can you turn your attention to some of the garbage, if not the sports rebroadcasts, that are being shown on channels across the network exposing kids and other unsuspecting viewers to the seamier side of life?

Yesterday morning before heading to work I listened to the conversation that pceasy and EastCoastVegas had about me which was released on Utterz.

I was going to clear up a few of the pieces of misinformation, or is it disinformation that I heard during the little audio clip, but frankly, it's just not that important to know that I am not 57 years old. That ECV's speculation about the value of my home is way off according to recent appraisals and sales and that the worth of my home does not correlate to the fact that the economy is in the crapper right now and the job market is there with it and that spending my own hard-earned money on a video camera has always seemed a waste to me for what it is I do. I am more interested in still photography and have had video cameras in my hands at the store countless times over the years, but have not thought I'd get much use out of them as an SLR so I've never plunked down the money, but winning one is a different story.

And no, I don't use the word alas because I am lazy, I just like the way it falls off my fingertips when I'm writing.

I hope this clears up any misconceptions anyone may have from the ECV/pceasy conversation yesterday morning ... if anyone listened.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- Conan O'Brien will take over the "Tonight" show next June - and what happens to deposed host Jay Leno after that is anybody's guess.

Leno's last show will be Friday, May 29, and O'Brien will start the following Monday, June 1, NBC executives told a Television Critics Association meeting Monday.

NBC is angling to keep Leno with NBC Universal but the late-night king has indicated he's ready to jump ship. Eager NBC competitors, including other networks and syndicators, are prepared to help him make the leap.

Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff, NBC Entertainment co-chairmen, were asked about the specter of Leno being hired by ABC and overpowering O'Brien and top-rated "Tonight."

"We really believe in the decisions we've made with our partners, including Jay," and stand by them, Silverman replied.

Graboff disagreed with the premise of the question, saying talks aimed at keeping Leno within NBC Universal post-"Tonight" are continuing.

But, Graboff added, "we've made our decision, we're happy with it, we're very confident the `Tonight' show will remain dominant in its time period."

Despite its prime-time woes, NBC has managed to maintain its late-night ratings dominance, although O'Brien has been challenged lately by Craig Ferguson on CBS. Now NBC is attempting a tricky transition based on a promise made nearly four years ago that O'Brien would succeed Leno.

The network attempted to defuse the issue Monday with humor: Leno was seated among the press corps, disguised as a bald, bearded reporter who was armed with questions about himself.

But the exchange came off as more pointed than funny, unlike a similar staged encounter between ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel and a network executive last week at the critics' meeting.

Kimmel, identifying himself as a Florida newspaper reporter, tweaked his bosses as he posed questions about his job security if Leno comes to ABC; Leno, on the other hand, represents a threat to NBC if he goes elsewhere.

"(Green Bay Packers quarterback) Brett Favre retired and then wanted to come back," Leno said to Silverman and Graboff. "The Packers said no. What do you make of that?"

Favre retired in early March but recently expressed second thoughts about playing in 2008. The change of heart has drawn lukewarm enthusiasm from the Packers, who spent the offseason planning to move ahead with Aaron Rodgers as their starter - akin to the O'Brien-Leno switch.

"Everyone's entitled to change their mind. But I'd imagine that puts management in an impossible situation," Silverman replied, gamely.

"Is it true you've offered Leno a fifth hour on the `Today' show?" Leno said.

"That's a great idea, actually," Silverman said.

Nah, replied Leno, "It's a crappy idea."

Jimmy Fallon is poised to take over O'Brien's "Late Night" in March or April of 2009, after honing his approach in brief Internet shows, Silverman and Graboff said.

O'Brien will wrap his "Late Night" run sometime in the first quarter of the year, with exact dates to be determined, the executives said. O'Brien reruns will fill the gap until Fallon takes over.

Streaming mobile video service Qik opened its doors to all comers Monday, moving from the invitation-only alpha it began late last year to an open beta program. The company also announced a bevy of new features, distribution partners and support for more mobile handsets.

With Qik (pronounced "quick") software, members can stream video directly from their mobile handsets to the Web. They can stream videos to contacts on sites such as Facebook and Twitter or use a mobile phone as a camcorder to capture and post videos of events.

"There are never too many things you can imagine to do with a cell phone. It's a very interesting concept because it fits into the idea of sharing. It fits into the next evolution of the social norm with people putting their stuff on Facebook and MySpace.

Mobile Streaming

Opening the service for a public beta means users with supported devices can sign up and begin streaming immediately and are no longer subject to approval from Qik staff.

Qik launched a new player designed to be more aesthetically appealing and include new functionalities. Users can now view thumbnails of all the videos posted by an individual and play them directly from there. They can also chat from within the player.

Latency has been reduced to between 1.5 and 3 seconds. Users can now subscribe to Qik from an RSS (really simple syndication) reader on their phone or Nokia's podcasting application on Nokia handsets. When they subscribe to a favorite Qikker, users will receive feeds directly to their mobile phones and can play the videos directly from the readers.

The enhancements the company is rolling out for the beta make it easier for users to designate recipients of their streaming videos. The new Groups feature enables members to create groups and micro-communities to which they can stream their videos. Meanwhile, with Events, users can create their own event, whether it's a family cookout or a corporate function, and invite others to join the event.

The service is now linked to Facebook, MySpace and Orkut, so users are able to stream live video on the social networking sites. Broadcasters can chat directly with viewers on Facebook. Other advances include the addition of support for Symbian and Windows Mobile devices on GSM and CDMA networks. That covers multiple carriers, including AT&T , T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint.

However, streaming one's life 24 hours a day, seven days a week could create privacy issues, as unsuspecting friends, coworkers or even strangers find themselves featured in these videos that are then posted online.

1. Personal democracy is an oxymoron. Democracy is about others.

2. But since the renaissance, much has been focused on the individual. This has proved one of the main obstacles towards a true democracy.

5. The media of the renaissance: the printing press (and by extension all broadcast media) are very good at perpetuating the myth of the self - individual interest.

The next renaissance (if there is one)—the phenomenon we're talking about ... is not about the individual at all, but about the networked group. The possibility for collective action. The technologies we're using—the biases of these media—cede central authority to decentralized groups. Instead of moving power to the center, they tend to move power to the edges. Instead of creating value from the center—like a centrally issued currency—the network creates value from the periphery.

I concur with much of this ... but Rushkoff offers a wise kicker: it is the art of programming - not writing or blogging - that ushers in this new epoch ...

"Writing is not the capability being offered us by these tools at all. The capability is programming—which almost none of us really know how to do. We simply use the programs that have been made for us, and enter our blog text in the appropriate box on the screen. Nothing against the strides made by citizen bloggers and journalists, but big deal. Let them eat blog."

CT Integration Systems owner/founder Matthew Jamesson is a recent Rochester Institute of Technology graduate. He created his company in part because of his need to showcase his talents and a need to make money right out of college. "I really wanted to be able to use the skills I have learned and make money doing what I love. I have to compete with many other area graduates that are looking for the same type of job and the Rochester area doesn't offer the types of opportunities with today's economy."

Antmore Technologies owner/founder Anthony Morelle is a telecommunications entrepreneur that also created a company because he wanted to fulfill a need that many other business leaders have neglected; the multitude of young talent leaving the Rochester area. "I believe in this City. I want to be in a position to hire the recent graduates because we have a common goal: to stay in the City of Rochester. There is so much talent leaving this City that I want to hold on to as many people as possible."

CT Integration Systems and Antmore Technologies both conferred on the idea of a Monroe County Wiki after Morelle's experience with a local wiki community. "I looked at a wiki community as a way to spread the news about my company. Since I felt that it was a local wiki, my company was local, it was a perfect fit. It turned out to be stifling and full of people that were self serving. It didn't promote any business and limited user's abilities. That is a stifling atmosphere and not conducive to Rochester's economic downturn." Matthew Jamesson agreed, "I was going to create a Scottsville Wiki but when Morelle came to me about having one for Monroe County, it seemed like a natural fit."

Monroe County Wiki will allow businesses, people, and ideas to promote themselves. They will be able to tastefully edit others' content, create pages, and discuss ideas. "This is the embodiment of the 1st Amendment and I think other wiki communities don't understand that," Morelle adds. This community will be about the Monroe County area only, but both owners agree that if this works and they are recognized, it can spur a whole slew of area communities all over the country.

Matthew Jamesson had this to say about Monroe County Wiki, "This will be a guide to Monroe County, foster business growth and togetherness. I can't stress this enough in this economic climate." One of the great benefits of posting your business in the Monroe County Wiki is the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) boost your site will receive when you link back. "We won't mind anyone posting their small business or large corporation on our site as long as you are a contributor," Jamesson adds.

The Drake model DAD860 Digital to Analog Decoder is a digital demodulator and decoder, for ATSC 8VSB broadcast or in-the-clear QAM television signals, that delivers a standard NTSC composite analog video and stereo audio output. This device, used in conjunction with an analog NTSC modulator, allows a cable system operator to continue to provide analog versions of services that will only be available to him as digital in the future. It may also be utilized to provide the alternate digital channels now available from many broadcasters.

There is no change in image format if the digital signal received is transmitted in standard definition. If the signal is high definition, options are given to either crop or "letterbox" the 16:9 proportioned image into a 4:3 format.

The DAD860 is packaged in an extruded aluminum module that is compatible with the Drake RMM12 or RMM4 rack mounting units normally used for our analog mini-rack components. The DAD860 is one unit wide and thus takes one of 12 available slots in the RMM12. There is a companion controller, the DAD860 Controller, that can be used to program and monitor between one and ten DAD860 modules. The controller module is two units wide as mounted in the RMM12.

The DAD860 modules may be intermixed with analog modulators from the Drake VMM mini-rack series, all powered by a single PSM121. This allows an analog demodulator to be replaced by a DAD860 while reusing existing analog modulators.

The DAD860 can operate independently of the DAD860 Controller module. In this situation, the DAD860 must be programmed from a PC that is connected to the front panel RS232 connector on the DAD. Once the unit is programmed, the PC may be disconnected and the DAD860 will save and remember the settings in nonvolatile memory so power interruptions do not corrupt the operating parameters.

Considering the flexibility described in the above paragraphs, the DAD860 may be used in several configurations. First, if mounted in the RMM12 rack cage (only 2RU or 3.5” high), up to 12 DAD860s can be mounted and powered by a PSM121. In this case no DAD860 Controller module is used. Each DAD860 would be individually setup with a PC connection to its front panel port. To check status or change settings at a later date, the PC would simply be reconnected. All settings will be stored in the DAD860s.

If a local controller is desired instead of PC programming, up to ten DAD860s can be mounted in the RMM12 along with one controller module and one PSM121. When using the DAD860 Controller module, no PC is required for setup.

Of course other variations are possible, for example - 5 DAD860s, 5 VMM860AS modulators, and one DAD860 Controller, all powered by one PSM121. Up to four DAD860s may be mounted ‘on their side’ in a RMM4, 1 RU high rack chassis. In this case, no controller is used. The four DAD860s would be programmed via the RS232 port and a PC. In this RMM4 case, one could use two DAD860s and two modulators such as VMM600s or VMM860AS, all mounted in the RMM4. The RMM4 includes a power supply that can power up to four modules.

i believe that the App itself uses the same station selections as the Radio section on iTunes. S E B is not listed there unfortunately. *sigh*. it's defintely a top-tier-listenership numbers thing. Ambient music, and moreso my quirky take on it -- featuring ms. Fitzgerald, mr. Crowley, and long empty spaces -- doesn't quite have that mass market appeal :)

don't even give it a name. the App will hit the server and derive that automatically. once it's playing, create a Bookmark for the station

the player itself works like a dream. they've really improved the overall experience. the streams are much more sustained, and it has all the features you'd want in a starter product, including an indepenent volume control

i only wish it provided the full Shoutcast YP listings like its primitive (yet charming) ancestor

I'm really pleased with this New Haven Improvisers Collective disc, "Interference." It's a solid document of two improvised sets, and does an excellent job of getting a decent sound across to listeners. I'm guessing this is a well-organized collective, as this is the first release for their own NHIC Records imprint.

Right now, I'm playing some of Eddie the Rat's "Food For the Moon Too Soon" album. This is also a live document, but has a surprisingly good sound quality, especially given the wide variety of instrumentation utilized throughout. Eddie the Rat is among the handful groups I'm sure I'll never tire of hearing. The music always seems fresh, wholly original, and vitally necessary-- any one of which is commendable by itself!

Ack. I just said a lot of really nice things about Rothkamm's new "Opus Spongebobicum" disc-- with the mic off. Well, at least there was a dramatic bit of silence before the start, eh? But seriously, I was mentioning that I am grateful and fortunate to be able to present Rothkamm's work to you, as I sincerely believe he is one of the great talents of our time. I'm amazed at not only his prolific nature, but the high quality of his musical output-- perhaps a Rothkamm-centric broadcast is in order for next month?

Boy, this Bearly Queen "Hair Palm Adventure" sounds like how my head felt yesterday-- slow, murky, and muddled. But since the BQ is coming out of a speaker, I think I like it a lot better! Someone dropped off a bunch of cassette tapes here at the station "free cassettes" so naturally, I went through the entire box one by one. I found a 30-second answering machine tape, and did a little looping with the Bearly Queen material, just for fun. This is a great album, and definitely my favorite for the label, Finland's Luovaja. Don't sleep on this one!

Recent reports show that Pandora has streamed 3.3 million songs to iPhone users since the launch of its new mobile application.  That’s a lot of peeps in a short span of time. Since the new iPhone came out Pandora has registered 180K new users and around 200K new stations have been created on the iPhone alone!  Hey again, that’s a lot of peeps.  These figures coupled with the continuing robust sales of iPods and their kind means there are a lot of people out there who just by the variety of technology choices aren’t listening to the radio as much… or at all.

Daunting, yes indeed.  But I am perplexed but the multiplicity of radio stations that are trying to emulate facets of the iPod hardware and Pandora (music genome) models.

Stop it…  You’re only a cheap façade of what’s going on in the narrowcast pull technology world.  You are a broadcaster, a purveyor of push technology.  You can’t narrow cast.  Well, you could if you bought one transmitter and tower and got a frequency position for every one person who Cumes your station.  That’s ridiculous. You’d have a field of transmitter towers that would run for miles.   That’s perfectly good land that could be used for a shopping mall or golf course.  (Oh, I just kill me... and only me)

Again, you're a broadcaster!  Slow, clumsy on-air social network programs pale in comparison to one of a 1000 on-line social networks.  All request shows may at best make you temporarily more diverse (if you let it) but in the end each request played (real or fake) only momentarily satiates that one listener until the next selection doesn’t.

Stop it Stop It Stop it!  Again, you are a broadcaster.  You can’t narrow cast to each individual in the cume.  Stop trying to be a tool that you’re not! 

You don’t bang nails with a screwdriver, you don’t sweep floors with a dump truck and don’t snorkel with a vacuum cleaner strapped to your back.

As a broadcaster what you do do, can do, should do and must do is entertain.  You can’t play the exact right song that one person needs but you can present the music you’ve chosen with meaning, stories, feelings, shared emotions and purpose.

Examples of the top of my head:

“I picked out this track from Coldplay right now because I was in the car with my wife last night and this song came on WXYZ and she started singing along.  As she sang the words I fell in love with her all over again”

Somebody help me!  So I’m in the shower and I started singing, ”I can ride my bike with no handle bar, no handle bars…”that was three days ago and I can’t stop.  Oh God here it is again on WXYZ.

“Is it just me?  When I play I Will Posses Your Heart by Death Cab for Cuite… images of Silence of the Lambs and Texas Chain Saw Massacre engulf my cranium.  That’s not just me… right?”

 “I downloaded it from iTunes and now all twelve tracks are the soundtrack to anything I’m doing…”

“Trent Reznor seems incessantly mad and sad no matter what he’s singing…”

“If you buy the Silversun Pickups CD or download the tracks and you don’t think it’s the best album of songs ever recorded by human beings with opposable thumbs… I will eat this radio station.”

I could come up with 10,000 more but you get the idea.  Yeah, that’s right… sharing ideas, visions, feelings, moments of elation, distraction or the painted veil of sadness, etc., etc...

These are the things that the broadcaster can do that Pandora or your iPod cannot.  Music delivered with meaning is so powerful that it can take over the mind.  If we’re talking the battle for mind share then I can’t think of anything more important than finding entertainers who can engage a listener.  As they used to say, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste."  That's true now more than ever.
