A month or so ago, we posted a roundup of user-created imaginary Beatle reunion tracks. (Check that story out here.) It seems we had forgotten one of them in the mix. It is a wonderful listen, and I will put it next to the other "imaginary reunion" tracks on my iPod.

I see this track alongside George Harrison's "When We Was Fab." It's a little bit of Lennon fun, with John reminiscing of the past fondly.

John Lennon - One of The Boys

Here's what we've read.

This originally sparce demo by John Lennon with only a guitar and him singing has been significantly augmented by two other "boys"! One is a guy named Nil, who synced a kick drum to John Lennon's original track, and the other is Rich Leavitt, who added a full synth drum track, a few guitars, bass, and backing vocals. They both post to The Beatles newsgroup RMB (rec.music.beatles) and have done a fine job in bringing this great song, that John had intended for a Broadway production, closer to being complete. Enjoy!

4. DUFFY VS. THE DOOBIE BROTHERS

"Duffy Train Running"

This unlikely simultaneous medley of the former's "Mercy" and the latter's "Long Train Running" takes about 45 seconds or so to get your ears around, but once the aural and conceptual cue arrives – a loud, defiant scratch – the disparate elements instantly fall into place. The array of diametrically opposed pairs – female/male, young/old, rock/R&B – seems almost too tidy, but ultimately they make the feat at hand that much more impressive.

One of the best things about summer festivals these days is that even if you don't end up going to the festival that you've been waiting all year to attend, there's a good chance you still might be able to be there without actually being there. Now I know some people aren't too fond of live recordings, especially from festivals, but one of the best things about more popular festivals is that there's still a good chance you'll can download whatever performances you've missed in mp3/FLAC audio or watch practically the entire performance on any number of video websites (youtube, vimeo, dailymotion). The AT&T Blue Room does live video broadcasts for Bonnaroo, New Orleans Jazz Fest and Coachella, which is awesome when you can just maximize the video on a flatscreen and sit back and watch it with at home, instead of dealing with a bunch of Chads and Trixies in 100 degree weather.

Anyways, I'm not sure how long this will last or if this will become an annual thing, but I just thought I'd provide those who are interested in quality live mp3 recordings of bands from summer festivals. As I said before, some people just aren't fans of live recordings, but honestly I think that's bullshit because most artists tend to improvise quite a bit when they're comfortable in that energetic festival surrounding, with thousands fans cheering them on, craving more. Hell, at Bonnaroo this year, The Raconteurs played "Blue Veins" for almost ten minutes (which isn't uncommon, but still pretty insane), and My Morning jacket performed for something like three or four hours.

I've provided links to those two performances as well as live recordings from Coachella, Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. Just a few of the recordings have a couple of songs cut off because of the live BBC and Blue Room recordings, and some are just one single mp3. Sorry for the inconvenience there, but it's the best I could do. Check back in a few weeks for Pt. 2, after I've made it through Rock the Bells, Forecastle and Lollapalooza. And I'll definitely update if I come across any more interesting downloads from these festivals or anything from Rock Werchter or Roskilde.

I have heard the audio footage of the Memphis show from 1966. Yes, they really were going out wi

I have heard the audio footage of the Memphis show from 1966. Yes, they really were going out with a bang. I cannot imagine what it was like to be in he eye of a hurricane. To be putting out press conferences at each and every stop. No one, does press conferences any more for musicians (save, maybe The Rolling Stones). I cannot imagine having to go through the same questions time and time again. I do imagine that it would get a little boring.

It's not like the musicians were even able to hone their craft and be sharp on the stage anymore. The Beatle touring machine was more about the hysteria and the circus than it was about rock and roll. I can see how the boys would have soured on that experience. It would be different if anyone could actually hear anything. I would have loved to have seen one of these shows, as much of us would have. I can relive them through various bootlegs and film footage, and feel like I am there. Somehow, I think that's an easier experience. It's more romantic that way, I'll take it. In 1966, though, animosity was running high for the Fabs, especially as they crept their way through the Bible Belt, with John and his "bigger than Jesus" comments. We know, we know- it was all taken out of context. But, some people had a HUGE problem with that. I imagine a musician today making a comment like that. They'd probably fear that they'd get shot too, much in the same way our dear boys felt in Memphis as someone lit up a cherry bomb mid-concert.

If you haven't hunted down the bootleg of this show, it's intersting from a historical perspective if anything. The sound quality is so-so, but you can at least feel the hysteria boil over in this concert. The boot is worth checking out.

The Fab Four in Memphis, 1966.

Here's what we've read.

Did someone throw a firework at the Beatles in Memphis - and did it end their touring career? Colin Fleming on the discovery of a remarkable lost tape of a seminal gig

In the summer of 1966, the Beatles had just recorded Revolver, rock's first full-on foray into what a band could pull off in the studio. But they were still every bit a live, coming-to-your-town touring band when they trekked off for world tour number three. It was a tour that, in the wake of John Lennon's claim that "we're more popular than Jesus", would lead to record burnings and death threats in America's Bible belt.

Beatles obsessives have long talked about what happened on that tour, and in particular what happened at a gig in Memphis. Someone shot at the band, goes one theory. A car backfired, runs another. The general consensus, though, is that someone lobbed a cherry bomb, a powerful type of firework, at the stage, while the Beatles performed their second set. Depending on who you listen to, or which web chatroom you log on to, the Beatles stopped short - or carried on as though nothing had happened. Some people say the band were frightened by the explosion - they had mistaken it for a gunshot, each looking around to see if one of them had been shot down. Whatever the truth, collective decisions rarely come faster. As Lennon said, that was it. Last tour. We're done here.

And then, late last year, word started going around: a tape that had long been hoped for, but no one really thought would ever turn up, would soon be up on the web. It turned out that two teenage girls had lugged a portable tape recorder to the Memphis show. There were already plenty of 1966 shows available as bootleg recordings, including a number from Tokyo in near-perfect fidelity for the era. But the Memphis gig was the stuff of fantasy.

If you collect bootlegs, as I do, you live for that moment when incredulity gives way to wonder. The tapes of the 1966 Tokyo gigs don't inspire any wonder: they're a good indication of how poor the band was throughout much of their final world tour. But when I first heard what has been dubbed the "Cherry Bomb Tapes", after tracking it down online, I heard a group raring to go. These guys were up for it. However, once we get to If I Needed Someone, swagger turns to humility mighty fast. Someone does indeed set off a cherry bomb, or some kind of backyard explosive, and the men of the moment blast off into double-time, Lennon positively flogging his rhythm guitar.

With audible proof of the explosion comes debate. What, for instance, would have happened if that cherry bomb had never gone off? Touring was still a possibility for the Beatles, pre-cherry bomb. That firecracker is the sound of a decision, a ne plus ultra moment for a band that was already contemplating a seismic shift in how they were going to do business: in the studio, with rock'n'roll taking life as collage art, rather than the stuff of teenybopper caprices and the night out at the baseball stadium.

Good Morning. It's 7:19 in the morning on this Sunday the 29th of June. I am in a good mood this morning even though I have been up since 5:00am to feed "hungry-man" Jacob.

The reason I am in a good mood or one of the reasons is because right now I am listening to a bootleg copy of a Pearl Jam show from San Diego, California, 11-03-93 which in case you might not have known is my birthday. The significance of this is that as many of you know Pearl Jam is my favorite band. Ask Moe, B. Black, Ike, Len, Feldman, my wife and anyone else who has known me since that monumental day which I experienced in the summer of 1992 can attest to- I like Pearl Jam. During the 1990's getting a live show of a band (other then the Grateful Dead or Phish) was extremely difficult. Their was no Internet to illegally download music, and the audio on a lot of live recordings was amateurish at best. So, what I had to do to get a live concert CD was- going into the village, drop about 50 bucks and hope I got a copy of a show that was:

a) a good concert where the band was on

b) a good copy of the show, which meant, no talking from the guy who was taping.

When it came to Pearl Jam I had 2Cds and 2 Maxwell tapes that I played constantly from 1993-1998. Their was a show in Zurich, a show in DenHaag, a show in Atlanta-1994 that they played on the radio, and finally a show they played on my birthday in 1993. I listened to all of them religiously. I knew every word, every pause, every mistake. Well what happened was that one day I had a friend at the time, Kathy, who asked to borrow it. Reluctantly I obliged and before I knew it for untold reasons we were no longer friends and the Cd was in her house not mine. It has been a good ten years since I have heard the Cd and I have been scrounging the Internet for a download able version. Today I achieved that mark. And this morning I am being transported in time to 1993 again. If their is any interest in finding this site I will post the link. For all of you who think Pearl Jam is boring and Eddie Vedder is a poseur, I am sorry, I feel the same way about Star Trek.

www.pearljambootlegs.org

So besides that what else is going on. School is over, yea! I have a job for the summer. I have to go to Roosevelt on Monday's and Tuesday's and I will be teaching an Academic advancement program. I will give instruction two days a week to students 14-19 and the other three days a week they will be out working. It pays good for those two days, I will be in one of the only air condition rooms, and I will be working with another teacher and 2 teaching assistants. Orientation is on Tuesday and I start on July 7th.

Yesterday Jen, Jacob, and I went to Bellini to find new baby furniture for Jacob's room. To make a long story shorter, we had a room for our lil peanut since he came home but it did not work out like we thought. We received a crib, a dresser, and a changer from Behr's furniture. Every time they came to deliver a piece was broken. They were pretty rude about it and they had to come by 4 or 5 different times to deliver a new piece and the same thing kept happening over and over again. Finally, Jennifer and her mother decided to have them take everything back and we would start over somewhere else (everything happens for a reason). Behers was upset and the manager yelled at Jen over the phone and told her our business was not needed there ever again!. Rude, oh yes. I wanted to call that guy back or go over there and curse him out but even though Jennifer was upset she had me refrain from making the phone call. We went to Bellini yesterday in Rockville Center on Sunrise Highway and fell in love with their furniture! They had such beautiful bedroom sets for newborns as well as toddlers. We are going back today to make our final purchases.

Jacob was so good yesterday with us. The whole time we were in the store he was in his stroller not making a peep. He is also keeping his eyes open longer in general, maintain eye contact when we talk to him and we even gave him a rattle which he held in his hand for 3.5 seconds. Yes I was proud. On Monday its back to Dr. Cohen for his 2 Month checkup. Mommy and me are so excited to see how much he weighs and how much he has grown. He is also getting 4 immunization shots so i assume alot of crying and pouting will be going on. His pout is one of a kind. I know its suppose to make me feel sad but every time I see the peanut pout I smile.

A few days ago a friend of mine and I were talking all things Beatles, and we got to talking about "Now and Then," and hopefully it's eventual release as a Beatles' track ala "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love." We were salivating and dreaming about the virtual Beatles tracks.

This led us to a youtube search of other lost Lennon gems. Several fans have made their own virtual Beatles tracks by recording some of their own parts, and slicing other Paul, George, and Ringo parts to flesh out these songs. Here are some of our favorite fan creations of "virtual" Beatle tracks. Some of these are heartbreakingly stunning and had us in tears. We cried over the beauty of these tracks, and for what could have been. Here are some of our favorites. They make great additions to anyone's iPod.

Regular blog news postings will continue tomorrow. Things have been crazy this week.

The Virtual Beatles - "Help Me to Help Myself" fan creation.
This is John at his most religious, believe it or not, and most confessional. It's astonishing that he was never able to finish this track. This is by far one of my favorite Lennon bootlegged tracks.
The new agreement partners Eddie Vedder and the boys with Verizon’s “V Cast.” Pearl Jam fans will be able to download three approved tracks from each of the group’s concerts starting with their recent kick-off show at West Palm Beach.

This promotion is the group’s way of reviving its long-standing tradition of bootlegging tracks for fans. The group will also make the tracks available on Pearl Jam’s website two weeks after each show. The songs will be available in MP3 and Flac.

He ihr Wurstis,

Z.B. die französische A.T.S.W.-12".

------------
Bengi!

Es gibt drei Möglichkeiten:
1. Du hältst uns für blöd.
2. Du stellst Dich blöd.
3. Du bist blöd.

Du vercheckst Bootlegs von meiner Band. Vor meiner Nase.
Du hast keine Rechte an meiner/unserer Musik.

In

Alles klar?

One is fake and the other is the authorized print of the Department of Education.
The sad thing about it, as far as I know the book is in the public domain. So why is there a need to "pirate" it.
Well the original is in Spanish so I believe the Filipino translations are held by copyright. But in this day and age, the fake costs P150.00 and the real one costs P300.00. The price alone could make a parent think twice about which book to buy their kid for school.

More pictures of the fake and real. Comment on which one you think is fake or real. I'll post the answer after school starts.

Book 2

Which one is fake and which one is real? You decide.

Al final tocaron Slaves and Bulldozers.

Setlist:

Spoonman - Outshined - Show Me How To Live - Arms Around Your Love - You Know My Name (with David Arnold) - Hunger Strike - What You Are - Rusty Cage - Be Yourself - Seasons - I Am The Highway - Scar On The Sky - Can't Change Me - Doesn't Remind Me - Cochise - Billie Jean - No Such Thing - Jesus Christ Pose - Mission - Like A Stone - Black Hole Sun - Sunshower - Loud Love - Slaves and Bulldozers

There are a lot of Holy Grails in bootleg footage collecting. These artifacts are talked about in hush tones. Just knowing that this film is in existence makes me salivate. I want to see Lennon in a candid light. I want to see him brushing his teeth, and smoking joints.

I know, it's a bit of obsessive compulsive behavior, but the bootleg-collecting uber Lennon fan in me just wants to see the footage. We all know that Yoko is protective of the Lennon legacy, and protective of his image and likeness. It seems that the judges agree with Yoko, at least for now. We will have to wait even longer to see the precious rare footage of arguably what could be John at his most candid and frank moments. Cinema verite at it's best and most real.

For now, all we have is a website, 7-minutes of teaser footage of Lennon brushing his teeth, and a dream.

Here's what we've read.

A federal judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit filed by a Lawrence, Mass.-based company that wants to show rare, intimate footage of John Lennon despite objections raised by his widow.

U.S. District Court Judge Rya W. Zobel accepted Yoko Ono's motion to throw out allegations filed by World Wide Video LLC that accused Ono of copyright infringement and conversion, or wrongfully interference with a right to use personal property, said Ono's Boston lawyer, Jonathan M. Albano.

The court, however, has yet to rule on Ono's counter claim seeking a ruling that she is a rightful owner of the tapes, and it is unclear when hearing on that issue will begin, Albano told The Associated Press.

Joseph T. Doyle Jr. and Matthew W. Perkins, attorneys for World Wide Video LLC, did not return calls seeking comment.

''We need to study our options to see what we'll do next,'' Doyle told the Boston Herald.

The company claims it owns the 10 hours of raw footage shot at Lennon's England estate almost four decades ago, before the Beatles breakup. But Ono claims she is the rightful owner of the original footage in her possession and wants to keep the material private.

The footage shows Lennon hunched over a piano, smoking marijuana, and joking about putting LSD in President Richard Nixon's tea.

''Mrs. Lennon is very pleased with the court's swift ruling dismissing the lawsuits against her and, more importantly, that the tapes remain with the rightful owner,'' Albano said in a statement.

The footage, which has never been shown publicly in its entirety, was shot Feb. 8-10, 1970, by Anthony Cox, Ono's husband before her marriage to Lennon in 1969.

World Wide Video produced a two-hour documentary, ''3 Days in the Life,'' using the footage, and planned to show it at a private school in Maine in 2007. The screening was scrapped after the company received a stop order from Ono's lawyers, claiming copyrighted ownership of the videotapes. The producers had previously shown excerpts from the film four times, including at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J., and at entertainment and media conferences in New York and Connecticut.

In court documents, Ono said she had a ''clear and absolute'' agreement with Cox when he shot the footage that it would never be ''commercially exhibited, commercially exploited or released.''

Ono said she purchased all rights to the videotapes for $300,000 in 2002 from a broker, Anthony Pagola.

But the principals of World Wide Video John Fallon and Robert Grenier say the sale to Ono was invalid, and that it owns the videos and copyright after buying them from Cox for $125,000 in 2000.

In its lawsuit, World Wide claims that shortly after its purchase, the tapes were stolen by a former employee, John Messina, whom World Wide later sued. World Wide claims in its suit that in a settlement agreement, Messina agreed to return copies of the tapes and to help them locate the original set of tapes.

Messina has vigorously denied stealing the tapes and said he believes Ono is the rightful owner.

Fallon and Grenier claim that in 2001, Pagola approached them and threatened to destroy the tapes unless World Wide agreed to let him be a broker who would find a buyer.

World Wide signed an agreement with Pagola, but said in its lawsuit that Pagola was to find a buyer ''for the purpose of development and production of a full-length documentary motion picture.''

Fallon and Grenier claim that Pagola sold the tapes and copyright to Ono without their permission and that he forged their signatures on the sale agreement.

Pagola was named as a defendant along with Ono in World Wide's lawsuit.

Mark Vidler AKA Go Home Productions has come out of mashup retirement (I wish I could say the same), releasing a whole album of mash goodies.

Not every track appeals to me, but you could say the same thing about every person's reaction to every album, I suspect. There are some standout tracks (featured below) and even on the songs I'm not enamoured with, you still have to marvel at GHP's ability to extract audio and make a killer edit.

Yes, apparently I'm still doing these previews of a year that's a third of the way through, since the other week Springsteen-aping rockers The Hold Steady announced details of their fourth (!) album, Stay Positive, which is due for release in July.

Tracklisting

Constructive Summer

Sequestered in Memphis

One for the Cutters

Navy Sheets

Lord, I'm Discouraged

Yeah Sapphire

Both Crosses

Stay Positive

Magazines

Joke About Jamaica

Slapped Actress

A bootleg of the title track, recorded during the band's time supporting Art Brut last year) has been doing the rounds for a while; it sounds a lot less joyous and celebratory as the group's last release, Boys and Girls in America, being much more darker, abrsaive and punky. Odd, yet enjoyable.

Download "Stay Positive" live @ Toad's Place, Richmond
