Shooting in exotic locations is nothing new for Bollywood. In fact, the style now is naming the film after the locale!

Here's a look at the movies that did just that.

[caption id="attachment_397" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Mission Istanbul "][/caption]

Movie: Mission Istanbul
Director: Apoorva Lakhia
Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Shriya Saran, Zayed Khan, Suniel Shetty, Shabbir Ahluwalia

Mission Istanbul tells the story of an ambitious Indian television journalist (Zayed). While his career flourishes, his personal life isn't that hunky dory. At this point, he gets an offer from a Turkey-based company to head an Indian bureau.

Things get messy very soon, and we get to meet Abu Nazir, a character apparently based on Osama Bin Laden, Indian politician Omar Abdullah (who appears as himself in the film) and a dead ringer for George Bush.

And to ensure you don't get bored with all the fighting, Abhishek Bachchan appears in an item number along with Kareena Kapoor!

[caption id="attachment_398" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Namastey London"][/caption]

Movie: Namastey London

Diretor: Vipul Amrutlal Shah
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Rishi Kapoor, Upen Patel, Clive Standen
She's from London, he's the real Punjabi puttar. How do you expect them to get married and live happily ever after?

This is the situation our beautiful but scheming leading lady finds herself in when her father decides to get her hitched off to our desi hero.

In love with someone else, Katrina's character lures our boy to the alien world of London and promptly dumps him once there. How he wins her over is better seen on the big screen.

Movie: Bombay to Bangkok

Director: Nagesh Kukunoor
Cast: Shreyas Talpade, Lena Christensen, Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Muray

Shreyas plays a small-time robber, who steals from a local don, played by Naseeruddin Shah. To escape from the don, he runs off to Bangkok.

Once there, he falls in love with a pretty Thai lady (played by Lena Christensen). Kukunoor's attempt at an adventure-filled ride-cum romance, however, did not find too many takers.

Movie: Kabul Express

Director: Kabir Khan
Cast: John Abraham, Arshad Warsi, Salman Shahid, Hanif Hum Ghum, Linda Arsenio

Based on his and his friend, Rajan Kapoor's real life experiences, documentary filmmaker Kabir Khan's Kabul Express was shot completely in Afghanistan.

The film showed Afghanistan, just after 9/11, when the Taliban collapsed.

According to a newspaper, I learnt a very sad true story and would like to share it with you. It is not so long, but enough to make your eyes tearful.

The eldest sister failed the intermediate examination and for this, her mother snubbed her off very badly. Due to this, she got mentally discouraged extremely. Her name is Shoma. She had three younger sisters, Reema, Neelima & Masuma. They were also unhappy and very very sad because their elder sister got blamed badly by their mother. All of them were school students. Four sisters decided secretly to kill themselves by eating poison.

At last, past monday all of them have eaten poison. As soon as it discovered by others, they had been taken to the nearest hospital but before reaching the hospital, the all had died. It happened in Tripura of India. Girls' father is a retired school-teacher.

Not content with fringe roles in American and European films, they're hitching their careers to the Indian film industry. Neelam Virje from London in Mint:

[caption id="attachment_2037" align="alignright" width="153" caption="Katrina Kaif"][/caption]

Fists clenched, face contorted, the woman berates her best friend with accusations: How could she steal her boyfriend and then lie about it? A waistcoat thrown over her green kameez, she paces the floor in rage. Dressed in jeans and high heels, the younger woman weakly protests her innocence. The scene, performed by two aspiring actors, unfolds not in India's film hub of Bollywood but in Ealing, west London, as part of the first batch of auditions at the UK arm of Actor Prepares, a school run by actor Anupam Kher.

The actors are in their 20s: Pirah Palijo, 28, is a lawyer from Karachi, Pakistan, and now lives in London, while her counterpart Seetal Linbachia, 23, was born and raised in London, and works as a hairdresser in her father's salon. The duo represent a growing number of British Asians who are looking outward and hitching their acting careers to opportunities in the rapidly expanding Indian film industry.

Posted by Jane

Since Tilia misrepresented my relationship with Kip so distastefully as to almost suggest he was a one night stand in her post about her London Gwag Royce Part 1, I felt I should set the story straight now rather than later.

So Kip and I met during a film shoot, which was essentially, my film shoot, during college in London. I was writing and directing a short and he was hired by my course leader to be my director of photography. He himself, was in film school there and came highly recommended. Well just taking a look at him I could have told you that.

We met over coffee for pre-production talk, as filming would commence the following weekend. We connected instantly. (And contrary to this website's material, you may think this happens to me often, but it really doesn't) We had a shared love for deep conversation and philosophy that I rarely find.

Kip was originally from a respectable family in New Delhi and had originally intended to go into economics and engineering like his Muslim father. But during college, his brother introduced him to some documentary filmmakers and Kip discovered he wasn't destined for a 9 to 5 job. He fled to London on a film scholarship to begin his career.

The filming went smoothly, we finished on budget, early, actors were happy and did I mention the camera guy was the best part? We became fast friends but nothing more until the night of the premiere where I was late to my own film. (smooth) Afterwards, there was lots of free champagne, and at this point in my life not only did I lack the sense of a cut off period, I didn't care, as Grey was there with his twit girlfriend, drinking nothing but orange juice.

This upset me more than you could imagine.

However, my chivalrous and handsome friend Kip took care of me that night as I, no doubt, made a complete ass of myself. He saved me from almost losing my passport, and escorted me to the tube station where he sat with me for almost 15 minutes until the last one came. I put my head on his shoulder and he lightly stroked me hair. At that moment, we were more than just friends.

Sadly, soon after our flirtatious period of drinking in Covent Garden and spending lots of time in unconventional conversation, I'd decided it was financially necessary for me to move back to America at the time, where he would stay in London for a while. It was because of this decision that I made a conscious effort not to sleep with him. I was afraid of falling in love with him.

Kip gave me a beautiful going away present that he bought on the streets of New Delhi; an embroidered Indian tunic and skirt, which for some reason fit me perfectly, even though he had no idea what size I was, nor had he even gotten a decent glimpse. (If you know what I mean, wink)

So we parted ways, but kept in constant touch. It wasn't until a couple months later that I regretted what could have been and actually admitted this to him. Hardly surprised, he expressed the same regret and I made a radical decision to return back to London that December for my 'graduation' which I'd never intended to go to. I needed to see Kip again.

So I arrived in London for a week, where Tilia also joined and we stayed in my old flat thanks to my lovely landlord.

Kip and I finally consummated our relationship and it was a sort of fairy tale week that felt like only a couple of days. (Oh and can I just say the sex was amazing) We drove out to the English countryside one night and spent almost 3 hours in a Christmas decorated tavern with leather couches, a fireplace and lots of mistletoe. We went to our favorite pubs and instead of talking, just made out with each other. (Consider it making up for lost time)

To make it even more movie-esque, he had decided to travel back to India the same day I would later fly back to America. He was going to 'Chaiya Chaiya Bollywood' to try his hand at becoming a famous director and I was embarking on a journey to Hollywood to become a famous writer.

After spending hours together at Heathrow airport on the night of his departure, neither one of us knowing what would happen next, but admitting we still had a desire to try to be together, he walked off into the distance after a kiss goodbye, I returned back to the flat, packed my suitcase and left for America.

(This was the same night Tilia, Royce and I attended the play readings and, hence the part where Tilia goes on a tour of London with Royce)

As time passed, we became more and more distant. And if the time zone difference wasn't enough, our lack of finances also hurt our chances in the communication department. So it was only recently that I called it off between us. Not necessarily due to any fault of either party, but just a lack of knowing what will happen to us in the future.

Kip is, however, planning to visit London later this year, and I told him I wouldn't rule out the possibility of seeing him again.

Because in a way with Kip, I felt I'd found my counterpart and it was, and still is, the only time I've been in love with someone despite their faults.

So check her in this crazy ass music vid by Devandra Banhart. He's something special. His music is classified as New Weird America, and his lyrics are often surreal and naturalistic. In this case, they're not in English.

Did I mention Portman is hot?

It was Friday Noon, I was hooked up to late night show on Radio Tarana.

The RJ was playing dilogues and songs from the movie "Hum Tum". I had seen the movie before and liked it too. But I liked it more when I relived that movie at that show.

That moment I knew The Bollywood bug has hit me again !! :-)

Next day first thing in the morning, I opened "You Tube" and played the title song of "Hum Tum". :P

"You Tube" does weird thing to you, You start with something and you land up somewhere else. :D

It started with a tiny water drop and then it poured. :)

I did not realize from "Hum Tum" how and when I reached "DDLJ" and all other Shahrukh Movies.

"Shahrukh is the Greek GOD to me " with serious expressions on my face I told TBH. :D

( He LOLed. He is used to my statements like this when I go into such bollywood trance once in while !! :P )

I was totally engrossed , watching all those mushy-cheesy-stupid-seeming songs and movies forgetting the whole world outside; like a teen age babe.

These movies are illogical, irrational and almost stupid. But they sell Dreams !! Don't they ?

Think of all these love stories; they are impractical. No ?

But Still we LOVE them. We watch them "N" number of times. Prolly because they are not real.

Like they say "who wants to see the harsh realities of life again on silver screen ? "

We laugh with them, we cry with them. We live in their dreams; We are happy with the happy endings.

We feel the hurt when Shahrukh cries (with or without glycerin ). We love the innocence of Prem & Suman in Maine Pyar Kiya.

We tend to believe that "Someone somewhere is made for you " with "Dil to Pagal hai ".

It is a big bad business of millions and millions rupees involved , with lots of dark shades.

What do they do ?

They are "Dream Merchants" selling these unreal dreams; and rose colored glasses for our eyes so that we fail to catch the flaws in these factually stupid movies !!

Friday night, I called home and asked Mom to ask Dad to buy tickets for the movie because it was opening night and I thought it would sell-out. I convinced myself that he likes to be sent on little errands because he can never sit still, and, actually, there's some truth to it.

Turns out he didn't want to go and bought only two tickets for the show. "You can take your mother," he said, preparing for a quiet evening at home with television - a television movie or Bloomberg or something like that.

Mom and I got to the theater minutes before the movie began because I came home late from work, forgetting that while buying tickets gets you in the theater, it doesn't save you a seat. So, when Mom and I entered the theater, it was full and we couldn't find a place to sit. "We're screwed," I said while standing in the back of the theater scanning for seats, loud enough to get a surprised and disapproving stare from a woman next to me. Mom asked an usher to find us seats, who very kindly did, up front, but not too close, which was just perfect.

Mom loved the movie. "I'll take K--- to see it," she said, speaking of her grand-daughter and my niece. I agreed, K--- will love it. I had a good time, myself, smiling at the music, the Greek Island colors and the sunlight, and at Meryl Streep! Having such a good time, a revelation on the screen, jumping up and down on a bed while seeming to hang in midair, all to the music of Dancing Queen. I thought she looked absolutely beautiful - crinkly lines around the eyes and mouth, complexion milky under a sun-kissed reddish nose and golden hair lit from above, behind, and seemingly, within. Oh, they were all having a good time up there on the screen, and down in the audience, too. People in the theater were laughing and clapping and singing to the music. A reviewer said the movie was very Bollywood, and it was. Bollywood in the way Bollywood is so very present, so in the moment, in it's color and abandon, so you forget everything else that exists while you are watching. Which is the point, really.

Even the Times of India isn't content to deliver simply national, international, sports, and business news. It stretches to give you news you can really news -- fresh updates on all your Bolly and Hollywood stars.

Real value for money here: it is like getting the Washington Post and National Enquirer on your doorstep every day. One difference though, the star's pictures are almost uniformly flattering.

Not that I would know myself, that's what other people have told me about the Enquirer, anyway :-)

i like devendra banhart. i like that his lyrics don't make sense at first listen. i like that his production isn't so studio perfect. i like that his voice is at once powerful and soothing. i like that he's dating natalie portman. but i especially like what he's doing with folk.

i've heard so many people say folk is boring and dangerously akin to country music, but there's something about the "new worldliness"/bizarreness of devendra banhart that might make folk more palatable to a more expansive audience.

his newest video for the single "carmensita" is umm...interesting. a few highlights:

"bollywood"

natalie portman

natalie portman as an octopus

devendra banhart shooting snakes from his eyes

color

good music

there's just one thing i don't get. a woman named carmensita from india? i guess...

i can't even tell if this is a spoof or not, that's how insane Bollywood is. If i watched this with my father (born in India in the 30s) he wouldn't understand why i keep giggling and covering my eyes. He would sit watching it with a big grin, slap his knees occasionally, and then say, "egh, well, egh, that was NICE thing, egh?"

Damn it all but i'm proud to be half-Indian.
