A couple of months ago I purchased a classic lens for my Nikon DSLR's called the Nikkor 50mm 1.8D or "Nifty Fifty" as the legend is known. My D40 lacks built in auto focus so you have to manually focus this lens, but for barely over 1 bill, how could I pass it up?

Tachikawa Bicycle Park, my favorite photo so far-

With such a large aperture it can sometimes be very difficult to get your subject in focus, I think get my focus correct in about 1 out of 5 photos when I am below f2. I need more practice!

Train ride leaving Kawasaki-

I apply tone mapping to a lot of my photos in an awesome program called Photomatix. Photomatix can really bring out the color in a photo and does a great job of creating HDR images as well. A lot of people do not like tone mapping and HDR, but I personally love the look.

There's something about this photo that I like. I think its the nifty pattern the fence bokeh makes in the background. And maybe the pop of color from the flowers against the gray of the fence. I wasn't originally a bit fan of this one, but it has grown on me a bit.

I was all excited about having the day off, and was hoping to get out and do some shooting today, but alas it's raining. So I'll have to wait a bit to finish up that roll of film. But at least I got my oil changed, and I've been needing to do that for a while now. Guess I'll spend the rest of the afternoon watching some TV with the katzen.

I'm also a bit torn on my upcoming dslr purchase. I've been saving for a Nikon D80, but I've been doing some research, and I've found the the D200 I can get used for a decent price. (for the body only, vs the D80 package). Its probably way more camera than I'll ever need, BUT it will meter with my old manual Nikkor lenses. The D80 will work with those lenses as well, but it won't meter. I'm not sure how much of a pain that will be for me, or if buying the D200 used is even a good idea. Although the site I saw it on, I have purchased from in the past, and they've been nothing short of fantastic, so I'm not terribly worried. Any comments or ideas are welcome. I need some major help with this decision.

Precisiamo subito.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens obiettivo asferico (sinistra), Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM (centro) and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (destra)

Cfr. Bokeh

Per esempio:

I can't believe I hadn't tried this until now. Dad has had his 5D for a week longer than I have had the 40D now and I've had the Sigma 30mm 1.4 for nearly as long. Anyway, last night I decided to see how bad the vignetting would be from the lens on a full frame camera. So I grabbed the 5D and fired off a couple of shots.

First thing I noticed was not the vignetting but the colours and the DOF. Could not believe just how different the images from the lens looked on the different camera. The bokeh was a million times smoother and the colours, oh how I could go on all day about the colours. But I will just say, they are awesome as far as I am concerned. Sure, there is that nasty and rather obvious vignetting but eh, it is still a usable, fast 30mm lens.

I also tried to see how close I could get a shot using it with the 40D and well, its almost there, but at the same time, no where near in my opinion.

finding your way

Today is Bokeh Wednesday!

It's not always easy finding your way.
To keep true to yourself and those you love...
To keep busy and work hard...
And not lose direction.
It's a challenge.

As I sat and watched the world wake up this morning,
Sipping my coffee in the cool morning air,
I saw this snail.
Making his way.
Finding his way.

And while he didn't make much progress
From first sip to last sip of my coffee
He had great determination.
Kept moving forward.
No matter the obstacle.

So today
Find your way
Like this snail
Move forward
Disregard obstacles
And keep true to life, love, and all the good that this world has to offer.

I spent a few days in Kagoshima City last month, specifically the tenmonkan area (天文館). Host to countless shops, bars and restaurants, tenmonkan is a nice change from Tanegashima where the streets play host to the odd stray cat and passing tumbleweed.

I spent most of day wandering around the city's many streets and back alleys, taking photos of whatever caught my eye. On my second day I hopped on a train to the outskirts of the city and realised that this was the first time I had been on a train in Kagoshima! As expected, it arrived and departed on schedule to the second!

There wasn't much to see in the countryside, I guess everything looked a bit too much like Minamitane! So I caught a train back to the city and concentrated on shots of the city dwellers.

After visiting a nice reataurant and a couple of bars, I dodged the rain and shot into the early morning. Things look great in the wet - the streets sparkle and umbrellas alwyays look cool!

Thanks to my Flickr addiction, I recently learned about the photographic technique called bokeh. I'm totally obsessed with it now. I had been taking shots with bokeh before I actually knew what it was, but now I guess I'm more conscious of it.

The term comes from the Japanese word for bokeaji, which means "blurry." It's the out-of-focus area of a photograph produced by a camera lens (not through post-processing). Usually, there will still be a large part of the picture in focus, and the bokeh will help reduce background distractions and give the picture a more artistic feel.

Here are some of my bokeh shots:

So I broke my 50mm 1.8 lens. This picture is what bokeh looks like from a lens without a front element! yay! Well i popped it back together and it still basically works, it just doesn't auto focus anymore which is fine except it makes self portraits incredibly hard.

Well anyways, i'm considering buying a replacement lens... i'm thinking about the 50mm 1.4 or the 85mm 1.8. However if i do that then i won't be able to get a small pocketable camera... so i'm not sure which i should get.... small camera (probably panasonic tz5) ooooor spiffy new lens. decisions, decisions! Any suggestions?

I love my Canon 50mmf1.8 lens. It takes really sharp photos, it's a good low light lens, and bokeh is just smooth as butter!

I am so impressed by this lens, I have to blog about it.

I've got the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D and the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D, both of which produce outstanding (world-class even!) colors, contrast, bokeh, and sharpness. I consider both to be must-have lenses. Those aren't the lenses I'm blogging about now, though, those are just my benchmark.

The killer lens is the Tokina ATX 50-135mm f/2.8 PRO DX lens. This is a DX lens, made for crop-sensor cameras. It retails about $650, which is less than half the price of the Nikkor 70-200 (a roughly equivalent effective focal length). To me, its colors, contrast, sharpness and bokeh rival my two super-fast primes, and probably the Nikkor 70-200. No, it's not f/1.4 fast, but f/2.8 is great for a zoom. Seriously, I'm blown away by this lens. Let's compare.

First, a couple of nice shots from the 50mm.

And a nice shot from the 85mm (haven't posted many from that lens on Flickr yet).

Now, the Tokina.

no post processing!

using the "sin city" Lightroom preset for colors, but look at that bokeh!

To me, this is another must-have lens if you have a crop-sensor camera (not a Canon 5D or 1Ds ??, or Nikon D3/D700, etc.) and need a medium-range zoom for wildlife, portraits, or sports. This lens is a steal for the money, almost as much bang-for-the-buck as a 50mm! Go buy one!
