Why I Want a PS3

I have an Xbox 360.

I use it for DVDs, HD DVDs, and for a few games.

I have a Wii.

I just use it for Wii Fit. But I gave up on a few weeks ago. So I guess I don't use it.

I have a PSP.

I finished God Of War Chains of Olympus. I started Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core but I quit playing that quick.

I'm not a huge gamer! From the above, I use 2/3 of the consoles that I own and the one I do use is mostly for video! So why do I want a PS3?

1) HD DVD Fail! I lost the battle here. BluRay won.

2) I have too many disks, time to start moving to video streaming and purchasing to a hard drive. PSN is free and the rental service beats out Xbox 360 + Netflix. In order to use the Xbox service, you need both a Xbox 360 Gold Account ($50 a year?) and a Netflix account. I neither play enough games online nor rent videos that often to justify the Xbox's paradigm (not to mention my savings account will suffer).

3) Great games are starting to come out. Metal Gear Solid 4. The Force Unleashed. That new Naruto game. Tomb Raider. I even think games that are not exclusives will have a better experience on the PS3. I can live without Halo and Gears of War on the 360.

4) The controller is just better. Xbox, since gen 1, has been known for it's big bulky controller. It's not that I have small hands, it's just uncomfortable! The return of the Dual Shock controller is definitely welcome.

5) PSN is free. I live with my fiance who's not likely to pick up Call of Duty and shoot some heads off with me I want to play online every now and then but I don't want to have to pay out my ass for it.

Here's to justifying my future buyer's remorse.

BluRay Belum Menarik Bagi Pasar Indonesia

JAKARTA - BluRay boleh saja memenangkan persaingan dengan HD-DVD. Namun di pasar Indonesia, BluRay belum terlalu menarik perhatian pasar.

"Saat ini industri rekaman masih terfokus di teknologi digital. Lagipula BluRay lebih terlihat kelebihannya saat digunakan untuk menampilkan gambar, walaupun ada kemungkinan juga nantinya digunakan untuk media musik," ujar A&R Director PT Aquarius Musikindo Ari Suwandi Widjaja ketika ditemui usai konferensi pers 41 Inovasi Indosat, Minggu (20/7/2008).

Menurut Ari, konsentrasi para label rekaman yang lebih memperhatikan media digital membuat perusahaan belum mau beralih menggunakan media fisik lain selain kaset, CD, dan DVD.

"Jika pun ada sebuah media yang cocok untuk menggantikan revenue media musik konvensional yang mulai merosot, kami mempercayakanya kepada digital. Untuk BluRay, kami berlum terpikir sama sekali. Bahkan hingga sepluh tahun ke depan pun pun kami tidak yakin. Kita lihat kondisi pasar nanti," papar Teguh

Warner Bros. to lower price of Blu-ray discs

In what I'm sure is a move to help speed adoption of the HD disc format, Warner Bros. has announced that they will be dropping the price of its Blu-ray movies in September with some falling to as low as $11.

That's not to say that the majority of them will be that cheap, but they should at be dropping at least a little bit.

They have not released a full list of titles and their new price but some of those falling to $11 will be:

The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
The Aviator
The Road Warrior
Enter the Dragon
The Fugitive
Swordfish

Death of the Dream: The Fall of HD-DVD

This is a re-post of an article I did for my old blog. Seeing the recent lack of sales and continued soaring prices of Blu-Ray discs (Beowulf is only 34.99 at Best Buy!) and Blu-Ray players has lead me to say only one thing, I told ya so. It's an inferior technology will never hold a substantial place in the market share.

Fuck you Sony. No serious. Fuck you.

So it finally comes to this.

Toshiba announced last week that it would be discontinuing their HD-DVD players. This signals the end of the new format wars (HD-DVD as opposed to Blu-Ray). While this is not a surprise it still caused this early adopter and supporter of the technology to groan in disgust.

Maybe I was naive, thinking that the SUPERIOR technology would win. I mean it is:

1. Cheaper

2. Higher Quality

3. Virtually Bug Free (as compared to the eternally fucking up Blu-Ray)

4. More Technologically Advanced

But just because it is better didn’t mean it was going to win as we all see now. Being the bitter man that I am, I can point to several factors which caused the new format to fail:

1. Microsoft’s lack luster support

2. Losing support of both Blockbuster and Netflick

3. Being supported by only two major Hollywood studios

4. Marketing

You see friends, HD was better. Hell, it still is better and will be until the next generation of Blu-Ray players arrives later this year. The problem was that HD was never marketed correctly. You never saw commercials (we were constantly being bombarded with Blu), you never saw huge displays at electronic stores and the big titles which were only being released on the format were never pushed (Matrix, Transforms, ect..) as were the Blu exclusives.

Maybe I am playing Monday morning quarterback here but I can’t help but point out the reasons that this budding and excellent technology has now been thrown into an early grave. On the plus, I and other fans of the technology will now be able to pick up dozens of HD-DVDs on the cheap. This is a small consolation but hey, it’s something.

. . . And Now She's Back

Twenty days ago, they took away my beautiful LCD TV to go to the LCD Hospital, and I know you were concerned. Thanks to those of you who sent me 'Hang In There' greetings cards. Well, she was released from hospital today, and so far she looks as good as the first day I ever met her. There was a slight scare when I couldn't remember the safe place that I left her power cable, but finally I figured out that I didn't put it anywhere, and it was mushed up with all the other cables behind the TV cabinet.

We are celebrating with Movie/Pizza night on Thursday, probably going to watch the BluRay version of Kung Fu Hustle - it's an amazing movie if you've not seen it before, like a mix between Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Looney Tunes. Looking forward to watching it in 46" hi-def blu-ray awesomeness. And our take'n'bake pizza place is also divine. Yaaaaay!

Pioneer develops higher capacity Blu-ray discs, can hold 400GB

Current Blu-ray discs are good choices for backing up large amounts of data (if you can afford them) but while the capacity of 50GB on a dual-layer disc sounds like a huge amount it can go pretty quickly depending on what type of data you're trying to backup.

To help people who agree that 50GB is a bit small for their needs, Pioneer has announced a new 16-layer disc. The per layer capacity of the new discs is the same as the current discs (25GB per layer), but Pioneer has found a way to squeeze 16-layers into one disc, making the total capacity 400GB.

No pricing or release info yet...might be a ways off still at this point but look for more details to emerge at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008 opening on July 13th.

87% of PS3 owners watching Blu-ray movies

According to a recent report by the Entertainment Merchant's Association, many PlayStation 3 owners are jumping on the Blu-ray train and watching high definition movies on their consoles thanks to it's built-in Blu-ray player.

How many?

According to the groups 2008 Annual Report on the Home Entertainment Industry, 87% of those surveyed reported that they are indeed using their console to watch HD movies.

Hola Mundo y Wall-e

La tercera es la vencida.

Si después de esta no escribo un blog, estoy convencido de que nunca lo haré.

Mientras tanto, un buen pretexto es escribir sobre Wall·e.

No sé como le hace Pixar para mejorarse a sí mismo con cada película (bueno, la capacidad de cómputo actual ayuda mucho sin duda) pero esta es sin duda, al menos en mi opinión, su mejor largometraje.

Los primeros 40 minutos son una maravilla visual y ejemplo a seguir de dirección (le decía a Jimena saliendo del cine que va a ser el mejor pretexto para un reproductor de BluRay junto con Cloverfield). Las tomas mostrando la magnitud del daño a la tierra...¡wow! Impresionante.

Por otro lado, me pareció interesante la crítica hacia la cultura gringa del consumo, sobre todo cuando es precisamente Disney quién también fomenta este estilo de vida (nada más hay que ver a su Walt Disney World Resort), además de todos los mensajes que transmite. Muy padre ver a un par de robots estar cuidando una vida y verlos ser los que regresen a los "humanos" a tener conciencia de sí mismos.

Ahora que la verdad es que lo que me hizo el día, fue el sonido que hace Wall·e al terminar de cargar sus baterías ;), junto con todos los objetos y detalles ochenteros. ¿o me habrán gustado más los créditos con las versiones 8 bits de los personajes? todavía no lo decido :)

Muy, muy buena película. Altamente recomendable. Ahora a esperar a Hellboy 2 y Hancock la próxima semana ("I say Han! you say...."), y "The Dark Night" en dos (Por cierto, ¿será? por los puros cortos, yo digo que sí, pero hay que ver en quince días).
