How to Get the Most Out of Your HDTV

Are you thinking about buying a HDTV? Are you already an owner of a HDTV? Well, here are some tips that will help you maximize your HD experience. These tips are things that are completely optional to do, but they will make a big difference in your home television and movie watching.

Calibrate Your Picture Settings

The first thing you should do after setting up your HDTV is to properly calibrate the picture settings. This will help ensure that you are indeed getting the best HD picture that your new HDTV can give you. The easiest way to do this is to buy a copy of DVE (Digital Video Essentials). This DVD (also available in a Blu-Ray format should you get a Blu-Ray player also) will walk you through the step by step process of how to calibrate the colors, black levels, etc to ensure you are getting the best picture possible.

It's amazing to see how much better you TV looks by using DVE rather than leaving the setting the TV was set to out of the box. It's also much, much more accurate than trying to 'Eyeball' the settings.

Buy a Blu-Ray Player

Obviously, if you don't ever rent or buy movies to watch then there is no point in owning a Blu-Ray player. However, a Blu-Ray player is the only thing right now that can even take advantage of that fancy 1080p display you may have on your HDTV. Television is broadcast at 720p or 1080i, never 1080p. Every Blu-Ray movie is 1080p by default (it is compatible with 1080i and 720p displays, so there is no need to worry about it not working on your HDTV).

Blu-Ray is also the only way you can currently receive the new high definition audio codec's'. Keep in mind though, if you don't have a receiver and instead hook you Blu-Ray player directly to your TV then it will still sound exactly the same as always.

Get a Good Surround Sound System

This will give you the ability to listen to 5.1 or 7.1 channel surround sound on your Blu-Ray movies with all the high definition audio codec's. You need to make sure you do your research before buying a receiver though. Many receivers offer very gimmicky options which you will never need. Also, they may be lacking the options you need in order to enjoy the new HD audio codec's found on Blu-Ray movies. I'll give a full report on what to look for in a home theater system later this week.

Use HDMI Cables

This one is really up to you. Personally, I like HDMI cables because you use only 1 cable for all you audio and video. Also, it gives allows full 1080p signals and all HD audio to pass through it. A third benefit is that it allows all Blu-Ray players to upscale your old DVD's, making them look noticeably better. Using HDMI cables is a must if you are like me and have many things hooked up to your HDTV. It really cuts down on the jumble of wires and chords connecting everything together.

These are just basic optional steps as I stated earlier, but doing the things listed above will greatly improve your enjoyment of your HDTV. Can you think of anything I've missed or have something to add? Let us know!

My First Foray Into Blu-ray

Get it? It rhymes. Yes, I am a loser.

I watched a bit of each of these today. I could quickly see why T2 was so comparatively cheap. It truly doesn't look that much better than a DVD. But the intro credits sequence is still as badass as ever -- even on YouTube. Conversely, both 2001 and Blade Runner look pretty damn impressive. I didn't watch enough of either to really decide which one looked better, but I found a page that does the work for me.

AVS Forum - PQ Tier Thread for Blu-ray

If you own a Blu-ray player (re: a PS3), or are just thinking of getting one soon, I highly recommend adding that to your bookmarks. They seem to be updating it too. The list agrees with what I saw: T2 is disappointing, and 2001 and Blade Runner both look great. They still aren't the pinnacle of the format though. Too bad I'm interested in buying basically none of their top-rated Blu-rays. Tier 0 indeed. Hot Fuzz needs to come out on Blu-ray -- I hear it looks amazing on HD-DVD.

Anyway, I'm off to lay in bed with my laptop, while watching T2. I wish I had an HDTV and Blu-ray player, but what I am gonna do? I couldn't help myself after watching The Dark Knight trailer in HD. I should probably watch one of the others, but I haven't watched T2 in it's entirety in years. ARNOLD.

Je continue à vous faire trépigner d'impatience avec une photo du lecteur HD-DVD pour Xbox 360 tout juste déballé ;-)

L'image n'est pas vraiment réussie, elle ne montre pas non plus que la télécommande du lecteur a un rétro-éclairage au niveau des touches! Apport très agréable lorsque l'on regarde un film dans la pénombre et que l'on veut manipuler l'appareil!

Aller, les pans du carton ne tiennent plus en place ;-)

Dell XPS 420

I finally decided to buy a Dell XPS 420 desktop computer this weekend. Dell is running a great deal for Mother's Day; $350 off XPS 420 systems. I'm not a mother, but who cares right? I can get the configuration that I want cheaper than I can get with my Employee Purchase Program discount mainly because I don't have to take the 3 year warranty on the Mother's Day deal.

This system is configured with the ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner. I really want to start recording digital/HD TV content including Premium stations with Windows Vista Media Center. With my current system I'm only able to record the analog stations and the quality leaves a lot to be desired on a 46" LCD HD TV.

I went down to Charter Cable yesterday to talk to them about Cable Cards. They were not very helpful. Both the woman at the front counter and the technician that I eventually talked to really couldn't answer my questions. The reason is that they haven't hooked up that many cable cards in PCs before. They did say that I would be able to get the digital/HD and premium stations. But, I could have a problem with voltage feedback into the cable lines. After further questioning this could be an issue with any TV tuner card hooked up with a coax to the cable company.

Todo parece indicar que va a ser un sábado atípico. Salvo por la colaboración semanal en Efe Eme. Lo cual implica al menos 2 posts para hoy (éste y la crónica de Socioapatía del tercer partido de las semis) Que no vienen mal para un día lluvioso (¡bienvenida lluvia!) Y a lo mejor al final del día cae alguno más (que se me acumulan)

Leer a Neil Young diciendo "Putting on a headphone and listening to MP3 is like hell" me puso inmediatamente en alerta. Es de los míos. O más bien, soy de los suyos (como comprobareis si continuáis leyendo) Podríamos traducirlo como “ponerse los cascos para escuchar mp3 es infernal”. Y me cambió la orientación del artículo semanal. Estaba barajando otras dos posibilidades y dándole vueltas al asunto con Juan Puchades, el capo de Efe Eme. Y en eso llegó Young y mandó parar.

Ya sabéis que la diferencia está en los hipervínculos (sólo en El Mundano) Y el video de la presentación de Neil Young en la JavaOne de Sun está enlazado en ambos artículos. Sólo que para el post he incluido los youtube (los de Sun lo han subido en dos partes) La primera parte encabeza esta entrada. Y la segunda está al final.

Neil Young y las Nuevas Tecnologías

Cuando Bob Dylan se mostró contrario a las grabaciones digitales y reivindicaba (algunos) sistemas analógicos, entendí perfectamente lo que quería decir. Pero como no explicó a dónde quería llegar, sus palabras fueron mal interpretadas. Está claro que en su exposición había mucho de razón y de añoranza. A partes iguales.

Dylan se unía así a un coro de aficionados y profesionales que sostienen (o sostenemos, en según que casos) que los amplificadores de válvula son mejores que los actuales, que la calidad de reproducción de los mp3 es mala, que los avances tecnológicos forman parte de la historia de la música popular y no son el enemigo a batir, que el vinilo debería permanecer (entre otras cosas por sus “deep grooves”, como recuerda Neil Young) o simplemente muestran su preferencia por las grabaciones analógicas sobre las digitales. Y en estos asuntos –como en tantos otros- Young ha sido un pionero. Con aciertos y errores, como es lógico.

Siempre se mostró reticente con los CDs. Fue el primero al que se lo escuché. En 1982. Fue en su rancho californiano de Broken Arrow en La Honda. Una localidad clave en los albores del sicodelismo: Ken Kesey escribió parte de su Alguien voló sobre el nido de cucos en las paredes del baño de su casa de La Honda. Sus aventuras, y las de sus The Merry Pranksters, fueron recogidas por Tom Wolfe en The Electric kool-aid acid test publicado en España como Gaseosa de ácido eléctrico o ponche de ácido lisérgico. Entre los Pranksters estaban “el chofer” Neal Cassidy –del Magic Bus de 1964 y anteriormente del On the road de Kerouac– y también Carolyn Adams, la Mountain Girl, esposa del Grateful Dead Jerry García y madre de Sunshine, el hijo que tuvo con Kesey.

Había organizado unas entrevistas con periodistas europeos, australianos y japoneses para hablar de su álbum Trans. Por aquel entonces llevaba el Marketing Internacional de Geffen para CBS Records International desde Black Rock, en Nueva York. Y Trans era un disco difícil que necesitaba de muchas explicaciones. Un experimento con la “electrónica” disponible entonces. Se apartaba del camino al que nos tenía acostumbrados. Los sintetizadores, incluyendo los vocoders, formaban parte de una búsqueda para desarrollar una tecnología que le permitiese comunicarse con su hijo Ben, que no podía hablar a causa de una parálisis cerebral (a lo que habría que añadir unos terribles dolores crónicos de espalda que según su propia confesión le impedían tocar la guitarra, lo que ayudó a crear ese estilo tan propio).

De ese día, aparte de los problemas de salud, me impresionó lo ordenado que tenía toda su obra (dentro del ambiente bohemio que se percibía). Todo perfectamente organizado y etiquetado en esos típicos archivadores de oficina. Ya entonces, 1982, le rondaba la idea de reagrupar todos sus archivos, pero no le convencían los medios disponibles de la época. De hecho no le han convencido hasta ahora.

El pasado 6 de mayo ¡por fin! presentó lo que anhelaba desde hace tanto tiempo: su memoria histórica en diez discos, repartidos en varios volúmenes. El anuncio fue en una rueda de prensa en San Francisco, con motivo del JavaOne (Sun Microsystems). Y su sueño se puede realizar ahora gracias a la combinación de distintos elementos: Java, Internet, Blu-Ray y la PS3.

En resumidas cuentas el lenguaje Java le permite actualizar por Internet, además de proporcionarle la deseada confección y navegabilidad de los menús. Blu-Ray le amplia posibilidades de almacenamiento (“storage is the only limit”, dice) y le ofrece la mejor calidad de reproducción.

Descarta los DVDs como formato, porque no se puede escuchar música a la vez que se visionan vídeos de alta resolución.

A través de Internet (con Blu-Ray) se pueden actualizar los contenidos. Que es el punto que me parece más interesante: no sólo hace públicos sus archivos, sino que además si se encuentran (o encuentras) aportaciones, se pueden (las puedes) incluir. Como parafernalia, imágenes, grabaciones, etc. Con lo cual está creando algo “vivo” y transformable. No encuentro precedentes.

¿Y lo de la PS3? Blu-Ray viene de serie con la PS3 y todo el mundo la tiene o conoce a alguien que la tiene. Una de sus grandes ventajas –aparte de las obvias- es precisamente su accesibilidad.

Para más información sobre este tema os recomiendo ver el siguiente video de ZDNet pinchando aquí. Es muy interesante y refleja la exposición y presentación que efectúa Neil Young. Ahí podréis ver los archivadores que mencionaba antes. Pero, por favor, llegad hasta el final, donde de forma muy gráfica demuestran la capacidad de almacenamiento y la extensión “física” del proyecto (despliegan un rollo de papel que llega a cubrir prácticamente el escenario de lado a lado).

Y si lo pensamos bien, en realidad lo que Neil Young está proclamando es que ni CDs, ni DVDs: lo que realmente recomienda es ¡la Playstation 3! Por su calidad y sus avances tecnológicos.

Sinceramente nunca pensé que el (posible) futuro del negocio de la música pudiese pasar por consolas de videojuegos o por los propios juegos, como ya está sucediendo (desde Guitar Hero a Grand Theft Auto 4 –que incluye 200 canciones- pasando por el Singstar, etc.)

Y a Neil Young siempre “le he echado en cuenta”…

Add to this its unabashed ogling of Alba and Walker (both of whom are astonishing physical specimens) and you have a solid romp. on another note, you might notice that while i'm a huge fan, i do not really indulge my readers by constantly posting updates about his private life (i.e. girls he dates)... yes, i know about jessica, cameron, jennifer, minka, etc (i'm not naive, hello)... but i really do not see any need to dwell on it, except, of course, if it elicits funny or contemplative personal reactions from me (if i'm not mistaken, out of hundreds of jm posts in this site, i only have about 4 regarding women that he may or may not have hooked up with).

again, it's his life. and i've said this before: whatever floats his boat.

...plus it's all over the internet anyway -- and that's how i manage to stay informed. natch.

ما هو Blu-ray ؟؟

Sorry if you're not a Neil Young fan - this is full of usual splurges and self-Neil-indulgences and the like.

Neil Young and Blu-ray

The past few years have been particularly exciting and changing ones for us Neil fans, and may I say particularly for myself. Alongside the news of Neil's illness, to his impulsive release of Prairie Wind, the ever-present Living with War combo and the trawling-through-time Chrome Dreams II, the blooming changes of Greendale, documentaries with CSNY and as a solo Heart of Gold, and of course the peppered live Archives, I finally attended not one, but three mindblowing Neil shows (I know - I'm mentioning them again). As one of them was a front row, centre stage ticket (2 months ago to this day), my life is officially complete and ready to be reported to the future great-grandchildren as if we're sitting underneath a softly growing apple tree in the aging sun, recalling tales of our blossoming youth.

And then, at the recent JavaOne conference, Neil popped up and announced that he'll be releasing his whole Archives (be damned) volumes on Blu-ray discs. Now, to my shame and perhaps obvious circumstance I'm unknowledged about the technical side of technology, but I do know that luckily, my brother is a keen techie buff and owns every console out there, including the PlayStation3 needed to play these Blu-ray thingies. And by the sounds of it, the Blu-ray does essentially seem like the perfect choice for the Archives for the following reasons (I promise I haven't been commissioned to say this):

It plays like a game through history and change, via navigation specialities;
The visual quality is instantly impeccable; (esp. with a good T.V.)
Storage is vast and not a direct problem;
Access to the Internet encourages updating of archival material;
Because in my young ways, if both Neil Young and my elder brother bang on about how good it is, I'm bound to believe it.

(View parts one and two of the conference on YouTube). So of course I'm excited for it - even if my brother ends up selling his PS3 - because being able to finally have the Archives, in all its splendour and brutal honesty and historical magic and present logic, will be enough.

Everything else

In other news, here is a little something for Minna, who rightly said that I never experiment with photos (although, remembering vaguely through my past 5 years of blogging, I have posted up a few personal photos in alignment with my posts). Here's something a little sneaky. A beautiful quote from Orwell's 1984:

Xbox discontinues HD-DVD add on

Microsoft has decided to stop making the HD DVD add-on for its Xbox 360 games console after Toshiba abandoned the high definition DVD format.

Toshiba estimated last week that about 300,000 of the add-ons had been sold.
Microsoft was one of the key backers for the HD DVD format, competing with Blu-ray, which was the format available in Sony's rival PlayStation 3 console.
Microsoft said it would continue to provide warranty support for the £115 HD DVD add-on.#
Last week, Toshiba said it would stop production of HD DVD players and recorders after major film studios decided to back Sony's Blu-ray format instead.
The Xbox add-ons sold represented 30% of the one million HD DVD devices that were sold worldwide.
That compares unfavourably with the 10.5 million PS3s sold by Sony, which come with a built-in Blu-ray drive.

Os recursos de vídeo e som para rodar filmes em alta definição e games no drive Blu-ray do modelo deixam qualquer um de queixo caído. O processamento gráfico é feito por uma aceleradora GeForce 9500M GS ou 9650M GS, ambas com 512 MB de memória dedicada e capazes de preencher com categoria a telona com resolução full HD (1920 por 1080 pixels) Aspire 8920G.

Sfida continua tra HD-DVD e Blu-Ray

A distanza di circa 18 mesi dal lancio dei nuovi formati ottici ad alta risoluzione, il mercato e i consumatori si chiedono ancora chi potrà mai spuntarla. Il problema è che i consumatori considerano i prezzi dei nuovi lettori ancora piuttosto alti e nella maggior parte dei casi sono convinti che i DVD siano ancora soddisfacenti quanto a qualità grafica.

Fortunatamente per i sostenitori di entrambi i formati, le vendite di schermi ad alta definizione stanno andando bene. Negli Stati Uniti, secondo NPD Group, circa l'80% delle televisioni vendute sono HD. Inoltre, Display Search sostiene che stiano incrementando del 40% le vendite dei televisori 1080p, in relazione al traino degli LCD TV da 40 pollici e superiori. Rimane comunque un limite la grande fiducia dei consumatori nei confronti dei supporti DVD: nell'ultimo report 2007 di NPD il 73% si è detto pienamente soddisfatto e di non sentire l'esigenza di cambiare lettore.

«Lo standard DVD è vittima del suo successo. È una buona tecnologia», ha commentato Josh Martin, analista di Yankee Group Research. Inoltre bisogna considerare che il passaggio che si è registrato da VHS a DVD è diverso da quello da DVD a Blu-Ray o HD-DVD.

«La nuova generazione ottica non può essere considerata un semplice aggiornamento, ma una vera evoluzione. Le major sostengono che si tratti di un salto epocale, ma i consumatori vedono solo un disco come gli altri, che apparentemente non sembra valere l'esborso richiesto», ha aggiunto Martin.

A questo punto secondo l'esperto si possono sviluppare solo due scenari. In un caso – che reputa praticamente impossibile – Toshiba e Sony potrebbero trovare un accordo sui rispettivi standard e riporre le armi, evitando il continuo sperpero di denaro ed energie. La seconda possibilità, invece, è che gli Studios cinematografici si accordino e decidano di distribuire i loro film in entrambi i formati o solo per uno.

Well it looks like it's going to be Down Under week on My Queue as the slate of films I have planned all come from Austrailia or New Zealand. We'll start out with one of my favorites, brought to my attention again because it's scheduled for a Blu-Ray Criterion re-release. And naturally, that made me immediately think about Jenny Agutter. Anyone who's seen this movie, Logan's Run, or an American Werewolf in London is gonna know what I'm talking about.

She fine.

Anyway, Walkabout follows the journey of two children who are stranded in the Austrailian wilderness by their deranged father. They befriend an Aboriginal boy who teaches them how to survive in the wilderness and leads them to an abandoned farm house. He tries to court the girl through dance, but when she doesn't understand his meaning, wanders off and disappears, only to be found later dead, hanging from a tree. Eventually the two children find rescue, but secretly long for their simple days of survival in the wild.

Walkabout is lyrical and ingeniously edited, Roeg juxtaposing life among nature with shots of life in civilization demonstrating the similarities and disparities between the two. It is cinematically gorgeous and Agutter is captivating to watch.

Is Blu-Ray Really Struggling as Much as the Media Claims?

Hi everybody. Over the past week or so, many media outlets ranging from Yahoo to CNN have been announcing steady or declining sales of Blu-Ray players since the fall of the HD DVD format. Can this really be true? Have you, the consumer begun to speak and say that DVD's are good enough?

There is no real simple answer to this question. I believe that the media is jumping to conclusions based on the lagging sales numbers for stand-alone players. The problem with judging whether or not Blu-Ray is growing in popularity based on stand-alone players is that those numbers don't include the largest base of Blu-Ray owners, the Playstation 3.

In March, Sony sold an estimated 257,000 PS3's alone. That Brings the total number of Playstation 3's sold so far to be estimated at about 11 million units. According to Warner Home Video, 80% of those players are used to watch Blu-Ray movies. That brings the total to over 8 million Playstation 3's being used to watch the new format with an estimated 200,000 new units that will be used as a Blu-Ray player per month at that rate.

The Blu-Ray stand-alone player market is also at somewhat of a lull at the moment because most manufacturers of the players are preparing to release new models of players. Companies like Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony are allowing the inventory of their existing models dwindle while they are launching new, profile 2.0 players to take their place.

With the newest models having been just released, or on schedule to be released in the very near future sales are bound to pick back up for stand-alone players. Pair that with the thought that these new models being released now or in the near future will most likely have a significant price drop just in time for the holidays, and it appears to me that Blu-Ray will continue to expand the number of consumers it has.

Gestern hat die Criterion Collection bekannt gegeben, dass im Herbst die ersten Titel dieses renommierten Labels auf Blu ray erscheinen werden. Damit ist das neue High Def-Format endgültig in der Szene der Filmliebhaber angekommen, die Filme in bisher nicht gekannter Perfektion privat geniessen wollen. Blu ray wird also kein Synonym für Actionfilme bleiben, mit denen Gamer ihre Playstation 3 füttern. Nachtrag vom 9.5.2008: Golem erwartet zu Recht regionalcodierte Blu ray-Ausgaben von Criterion:

"Seine DVDs bietet Criterion bislang nur für den nordamerikanischen Markt mit Regional-Code 1 an. Das lässt vermuten, dass auch beim Blu-ray-Import nach Europa auf mögliche regionale Beschränkungen geachtet werden muss und die Filme möglicherweise in europäischen Blu-ray-Playern ihren Dienst verweigern. Bei der HD-DVD war es für Filmfans einfacher, Filme aus anderen Ländern zu importieren und abzuspielen. Bei der Blu-ray Disc hingegen muss bei jedem Film aus anderen Märkten auf etwaige Beschränkungen geachtet werden. Privat erstellte Listen können dabei helfen, zum Beispiel auf der Webseite "Blu-Ray Region Code Info"." (Golem)

Dass Criterion seine Dienste nur für den nordamerikanischen Markt anbieten darf, hatte man ja schon beim Umtausch der falsch gemasterten DVD von "Mala Noche" gesehen.

Die Vorzüge der Blu ray-Edition betont Aleck Bennett im Video Watchblog:

"Just a quick note on the CC BD offerings: while I agree that the COMPLETE MONTEREY POP and GIMME SHELTER 16mm elements probably wouldn't benefit tremendously from the higher resolution BD offers, I do think that they'll both show improvements in these releases. The higher storage capability, combined with much more efficient codecs (standard-def's MPEG-2 is a notoriously 'lossy' and inefficient codec) will allow for less noticeable compression, leading to a more pleasing viewing experience. Maybe not by *much*, given the 16mm origins, but I'm hoping it'll be noticeable... However, where I think the BD releases will surely shine is in the audio department, given BD's support of lossless audio formats. While the sound mixes used on the standard-def DVDs are pretty nifty, uncompressed versions of the 5.1 mixes should be a real treat. Assuming, of course, that they'll be offering uncompressed versions of the 5.1 mixes!" (Video Watchblog)
