Case 4, Case 5, and the third report (divider) have been recently added to the Halloween Horror Nights website. Case 4 covers the "Creature" house while Case 5 handles Scary Tales III. The doctor's methods are becoming more inhumane and disturbing as each comes to pass. The third report heavily implies that the doctor is transforming by her mindset and shift in her voice. With the concept of Bloody Mary rumored to somehow be involved this year; I think it's safe to say that the doctor ends up developing into the myth. In other words, the creative department behind HHN (A&D) seems to be taking the concept of the myth and putting their own spin on it. Though how exactly the doctor develops into Bloody Mary is unknown at this time.

Another letter from B.S. (whose real name appears to be "Boris Shuster") was sent out to fans and gave us an outsiders perspective. Apparently the doctor runs a business and her patients seem to be disappearing. She's thin, young, and is looking a bit different lately. B.S. also mentions at the end of the letter that he plans on calling the doctor and telling her he has a particular phobia (Iatrophobia- fear of going to the doctor) in order to make an appointment and meet the doctor. Whether he'll survive the ordeal or not remains to be seen, though Ioatrophobia seems to fit in with the "Bloody Mary" house (which appears to be a medical facility). It's a possibility that B.S.'s fate will be determined with the "Bloody Mary" house case file (which could ultimately be the last one). You can read the letter by clicking here.

Two pieces of concept art were officially released to the public by Universal, which you can view by clicking here and here as well. If you happen to be wondering why B.S. has been named Boris Shuster you can view the following image taken from a location within Universal Studios by visiting the following link: Boris Shuster Private Investigations. A press release regarding the various ticket prices and discounts was released on Universal's HHN Media Website. And I'll wrap this entry up with two teaser videos released by Universal regarding HHN 2008. Roughly 42 more days to go until Horror is upon us.

So as you can see, I'm catching up on my lovely google friends today and while the last term was rather disturbing (and happens to be the most popular way to get to BabyBound as of late) this one just makes me giggle.

Dear floless,

Thank you for sending in your question. It isn't often that I get asked anything of such importance so I will certainly do my best to answer with as much detailed knowledge and professionalism as possible.

Aunt flo: Aunt flo is your period. Well, its someone's period as I am not aware of your sexual makeup or age. Seeing as the topic of womanly business tends to scare off men, boys, children, all animal forms within earshot, we awesome ladies have come up with all kinds of ways to creep it into conversation under the radar. Aunt flo, our little friend, crimson tide, monthlies, on the rag, big red, miss dot, the dreaded dragon, up on blocks, bloody mary, royal flood, the curse, TOM (time of the month), and on and on.

While Flo could be that weird aunt you have that lives far away and sends you $5 cash in a card for your birthday every year, its also pretty descriptive for what is going on down in your nether regions on a somewhat regular basis if you're a chick.

I, for one, get visits from this little bitch on a far to frequent basis these days after years and years of neglect. Its like she's making up for lost time and I'd rather we just cut our losses and move on.

I hope this helps, my sadly un urbanly educated friend. If anyone would like to add more detail, feel free.

Your friend,

Finally had a day off from work last Sunday. August is stacked with weddings. Four weddings down, four to go. What a great learning experience.

[caption id="attachment_297" align="alignnone" width="425" caption="Me and Kaboom stand at the edge of lake Michigan and watch the crashing waves.
Danialle and I started the day with some breakfast and periodicals at Beans and Bagels. After breakfast, we went home, picked up Kaboom, and took him to the dog beach to swim in the lake and run off some steam with other dogs. Lance (brother-in-law) and Coen (nephew) met us at the beach a few hours later to hang out and play in the sand. We also walked over to the nearby skate park to watch some skaters strut their stuff. Fun times.

[caption id="attachment_299" align="alignnone" width="425" caption="Danialle fulfills her daily dose of vitamin D while looking out over lake Michigan. " width="425" height="282" />[/caption]

After leaving the lake, we dropped off Kaboom and made our way over to a local bar where my sister-in-law, Jamie, works. We ate some pizza and had a drink (first drink is free on Sundays. Woot!). I've been enjoying Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy lately. Danialle had a virgin (she's prego!) Bloody Mary.

Later that evening, Danialle and I stopped by our favorite video rental store and rented Penelope, starring Christina Ricci. Great flick. It had a very Tim Burtion-ish feel to it; bright colors and fantastic cinematography. Check it out!

I have to preface our Schiller's brunch with an unfortunate tale about one of my favorite restaurants Freeman's. My girlfriend and I had went tried to go to Freeman's first and while it was a Sunday morning it wasn't super crowded and there didn't seem to be many people ahead of us. We walked in and waited a good two minutes before the host came to the front of the restaurant. "Hi, two please," is exactly what I said. The little want to be club bouncer with is shirt half open looked completely annoyed, "good morning, how are you?", "I'm fine, thank you. How long for two." The dickhead paused, let out a chuckle and seemed to pull "an hour" from out of nowhere. I left my name and we decided to move on and have brunch elsewhere. The moral of the story is that I don't give a fuck how that little shit was doing, nor do I care to wish him a good morning. I go to a restaurant to buy a meal and a median of exchange takes place, food for money. I always leave at least a 20% tip and am more than courteous to anyone in a restaurant. To possibly have to wait longer because I didn't wish this fuckface a good morning is obscene and I'm not sure I'll be returning to Freeman's (as much as I love their food) if it means supporting people like this. I must add then in the four or five other times that I've been to Freeman's the staff has been nothing but nice.

Anyway.....We decided to try out Schiller's Liquor Bar which we've never been to before (I love Pastis and Balthazar) fortunately we were seated immediately and served by an extremely helpful and friendly waitress. For cocktails my girlfriend had an alcoholic strawberry coconut egg cream (I suspect it was made with rum) and I had a bloody mary. Both drinks cost $10 and were excellent in their own rights. The egg cream was rich and potent and the bloody mary was among the spiciest I have ever had! (I love them spicy).

We shared the Balthazar bread basket ($12) which included a sugar scone, sticky bun, plain croissant and an absolutely spectacular buttery chocolate croissant. I think there were a few other items in the basket as well that I can't remember.

For entrees my girlfriend had a heart attack special (a $10 huge croque monsieur) and I had chicken paillard ($15) which was essentially a huge piece of pounded chicken breast charred and topped off with mescalin salad, cherry tomatoes, Parmesan cheese and a light vinaigrette. It was both not too filling and quite a nice brunch item you wouldn't usually find on the menu.

Unfortunately, we didn't get around to trying their famous fries (which looked delicious) but I would love to return for lunch or dinner and try out some of their cocktails. After the let down of Freeman's, Schiller's was the perfect answer.

"Assolutamente no", dice lei. "E' una mia creazione: bevi!". Eseguo.
Proprio azzurro cielo.
"Blue Lagoon", annuncia, trionfante.

Ps. Visto? Qualche avverbio, qui, c'è...

Bloody Mary, anyone?

It's the last day of vacation. Time for overkill and excess. Party now, but pack later, for we'll be on the road super-early tomorrow, with the Outer Banks in our rear-view mirror for another year.

But I don't want to think about that now. My friend just made me a Bloody Mary. Let the debauchery begin...

In 1921 Fernand "Pete" Petiot of Harry´s Bar, Paris, mixed tomato juice, vodka, salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce.

Although tomato and vodka was already a well known combination he named his spiced version a Bloody Mary, according to some accounts after Mary Pickford, the popular screen actress.

In 1933 US Prohibition ended and the following year Petiot accepted an invitation from John Astor of the St. Regis Hotel, New York, to become head barman at its King Cole Grill.

Astor felt some people would be offended by the name Bloody Mary, so Petiot introduced the drink as a Red snapper. Prince Serge Obolensky asked him to "spiced it up a bit". Tabasco sauce was added and the result was suddenly all the rage. Petiot later circulated the recipe under its original name.

2 msr vodka

5 msr tomato juice

1|2 teaspoon lemon juice

2 dashes Worcestershire sauce

4 drops Tabasco sauce

1 pinch celery salt

1 small pinch black pepper

Shake and strain through a hawthorn strainer.

Garnish: short celery stem with leaves.

If 1 msr gold teqila is also added, this becomes a Deadly Mary.

If tequila is used in place of vodka in a Bloody Mary,t his is a Bloody Maria.

If gin is used in place of vodka in a Bloody Mary, this is known as a Red Snapper.

This is not one of my favorite religious episodes, and it could offend for more than the usual reasons (like, by taking up a stick to AA), but it should be watched because its points are well-delivered.

The episode discusses the nature and existence of miracles. A fascinating topic. Do miracles happen? Have you ever witnessed a miracle? What constitutes a miracle?

Additionally, the Pope has a really excellent line after a statue of the Virgin Mary squirts blood into his face from a special orifice. Another great conversation takes place between Stan when he confronts AA about what they told his father.

A controversial episode no doubt. What did you think?

I recently took my mother and girlfriend to Park Avenue Summer for my mother's birthday brunch. We were all disappointed.

Besides not having a cocktail list (I hate when pricey restaurants neglect cocktails) and spotty service, the food was just not that good. The price-fixe is $32 which gets one an appetizer and a main course. The table receives a rather nice bread basket that includes a sugar spiced doughnut, glazed banana bread and a summer blueberry muffin amongst other pastries. I think that this was far and away the best part of a blah meal.

My mother had a summer garden salad with a sunflower lemon vinaigrette for her appetizer and she said that it was okay but nothing special. Her main course was pancakes with rhubarb, strawberries and balsamic vinegar, it was an ample serving but rather dry and certainly not wort close to forty dollar with tip and tax.

My girlfriend had a mimosa and for her appetizer chose a sweet corn soup that the waiter completely forgot about. What was bizarre was that he put a plate down for her when me and my mother got our appetizers but then never returned. Once we finally beckoned him over he acted as if he knew he needed to bring the soup the whole time even though it came ten minutes after we had received ours. The soup was fine but again nothing to write home about. For an entree she had smoked salmon with eggs with creme fraiche, caviar and pressed potatoes. This seemed to be a very good selection.

I ordered a bloody Mary, that was well....a bloody Mary, nothing stood out about it. To start I had Maine crab, served gazpacho style with avocado ice cream, horseradish and a pickled vegetable salad. This was the best item any of us had as the presentation was original and all the flavors went perfectly with the others. My main course was the Upper East Sider which the waitress described to us as a duo of a bagel with cream cheese and lox and eggs Benedict. She neglected to mention that each were the size of a miniature chocolate chip cookie. I've never been one to complain about portion size, ever! However, this was ridiculous, especially because there was no mention of size in the description. Yes, there was some shaved truffle over the eggs Benedict and yes it was very tasty but really, the bill was one hundred and eighty dollars and I left completely starving.

Park Avenue Summer is very close to my house and the idea of a restaurant that changes it's dining room and menu with the seasons is quite appealing. But I just don't believe that you can have spotty service, minuscule portions, non-spectacular food and demand such lofty prices. Dinner entrees price well over forty dollars. Not on my dime, Park Avenue Summer

In theory a tomato infused vodka makes perfect sense. For months I have had various infusions in my freezer to hammer down that perfect Bloody Mary drink sensation. These infusion experiments have worked out rather well with peppercorns, fresh garlic, jalapeño pepper and various other spices. But clearly it would always be nice to be able to grab a ready made vodka infusion off the liquor store shelf rather than make my own.

When word came around that Three Olives had Tomato Vodka on the way, my liquor friends in the business and I were already throwing around ideas of what would be great in it…fresh fennel, coriander seed and pink sea salt maybe. It would possibly be great in a straight up dirty martini. Then there is the thought of a drop of Absinthe in a tomato cocktail or Chartreuse. Pimm’s might even be great. What about fresh chive as a garnish? How about fresh thyme or even dill?* The possibilities could be endless. To be perfectly honest, when word gets out that something new is hitting the market we cocktail enthusiasts get hugely excited! We love to try everything.

Three Olives’ reputation for high quality superb vodka infusions is long standing. There was no reason to doubt the Tomato Vodka would be any different. Their website touts:

“Mary, Mary, Mary. The greatest drink in the world? The “Bloody Mary” – no one knows who thought of the name but who cares? All we know is we just love the taste of fresh tomatoes, pepper, horseradish and spices infused into Three Olives Vodka to create our very own essence of “Bloody Mary.” Drink on the rocks, as a shot or in your favorite martini.”

[wp_caption id="attachment_239" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Tomato Vodka Straight Up"][/wp_caption]

As a shot this super premium vodka is all tomato. This is a not a roll around on the tongue to savor the flavor type of vodka. The typical vodka drinker will not want to savor the taste, texture and feel of the Three Olives Tomato Vodka unless of course they are a huge tomato fan. While it definitely has the aroma and essence of tomato, it lacked a certain depth in my opinion. Possibly I would refer to it as thin, because the tomato lacked proper support from the other infused flavors. My taste buds could not distinguish any of the pepper, horseradish or spices that are infused in with the tomato.

At first glance at the recipes for the new vodka, they were not the inventive, distinctive cocktails my fellow enthusiasts and I were hoping for. There were of course the traditional Bloody Mary types and two others that were a bit odd to say the least. For a company with such a vast line of premium infused vodkas, the distinguished reputation it has and the exclusivity of this flavor of vodka, the recipes seemed to be lacking in distinctiveness and zest.

The Bloody Martini fell flat as Three Olive’s number one of the four Tomato Vodka recipes. If it were not for the Stirrings Bloody Mary Rimmer this cocktail would have no flavor at all. The cocktail is bland. It calls for a “dash” of spicy Bloody Mary Mix. This is a difficult measurement for the average bartender, let alone a home bartender looking up the recipe online. Does one know what a “dash” of this or that is? Doubtful. Typically there are 36 dashes in an ounce. A dash is a general term for minuscule quantities. A person is seasoning to taste. I put more hot sauce than the 3-4 drops and an entire half ounce (approx. 18 dashes) of spicy Bloody Mary mix into the Bloody Martini. Neither helped add enough flavor to this cocktail. However, Three Olives stepped up their game with a highly inventive garnish. Too many times cocktails rely on the tried and true lime wheel, olive, or in the case of the Bloody Mary; a celery stalk for garnish. The Bloody Martini has a clever, out of the ordinary speared grape tomato and mozzarella ball garnish. The garnish is what makes this cocktail memorable.

The Diablo Rojo appears to be Three Olives version of the classic Bloody Mary on ice in a tall glass. Going heavy on the dashes of hot sauce in this cocktail did not do enough to give this drink enough flavor. I am not one to rely on mixes for any number of classic cocktails, but especially not a Bloody Mary. Any number of spices needed for a Bloody Mary may be found in the refrigerator or spice cabinet. Instead of relying on a Bloody Mary mix keep Clamato or Tomato juice handy. Then a few items from your pantry and a fresh lime for added flavor are all you need to mix your own Bloody Mary. An earlier post (Bloody Mary Sunday) breaks down a wonderful recipe. Beware…it does call for dashes according to your personal taste.

A couple of weeks ago I played around with flavored syrups. It was a pleasant surprise to see that I already had Basil Infused Syrup on hand for Morning Sunshine. The first scent of Morning Sunshine is the overwhelming tomato. But then the sweet hits you in the taste. The cocktail is not too sweet; however the taste is rather odd. It is not the basil syrup by itself or the orange juice by itself or even the Tomato Vodka alone. It is the combination as a whole. They do not seem to mingle as one. Again, Three Olives came through with a unique and interesting garnish. Morning Sunshine uses a cherry tomato, orange wedge flag garnish with sprig of basil. This garnish is a nice diversion from the ordinary.

There are a lot of varieties of Mojitos on the cocktail scene at the moment. Honestly, I never thought I would see a Tomajito. Three Olives apparently think they can pull this one off. If you are a tomato lover, you will definitely love this one. I think. There is a lot of soda taste, not too sweet and most unquestionably the tomato is there. I for one can not get past the tomato flavor. This garnish too added personality and color to this cocktail with the vibrant green lime and cherry tomato flag.

Three Olives Tomato Vodka in my opinion may not be a shot or on the rocks type vodka, but it has tremendous potential for a Bloody Mary. After all, vodka and tomato are two important ingredients in a Bloody Mary cocktail are they not? But, find a Bloody Mary recipe that suits your palate. There are Tomato Based Vodka Recipes in my pages section that may be altered to your taste, use the recipe in the Bloody Mary Sunday post or use another. But give Three Olives Tomato Vodka a try. Neither my review nor anyone else’s review can taste it for you. Only you can do that for yourself. If you are a serious Bloody Mary drinker, Three Olives Tomato Vodka is a vodka you should try.

In an effort to find tomato based vodka cocktails my search came up very empty handed. My thought is either there will be a few specific recipes trickling into data bases on the internet with the new release of Three Olives Tomato Vodka or it will fizzle and die out as some infusion flavors sadly do. However, the recipes below may be tailored to your specifications using the new Three Olives Tomato Vodka if you so choose.

The recipes below are only a starting point. Play with them until they become one of your personal favorites. Exchanging tomato infused vodka for the traditional plain vodka will add a richer, more thorough tomato flavor throughout your drink. I also suggest Clamato Juice or V8 Juice rather than a simple tomato juice to spice up your flavor experience. Do not forget spices in your refrigerator and spice cabinet for added zest. These often will give you more flavor than any Bloody Mary mix on the market. Then again, I am not fond of mixes. These recipes also lack garnish. Go for more than the celery stick. Be clever and ingenious.

By all means, send me your ideas. I would love to hear from you and what you have done to make these recipes and any others your own. ~ Intoxicologist

Small dishes from the realm where paper meets palate.

The July/August ’08 issue of Draft magazine has an extensive list of major upcoming beer festivals divided geographically. For July there is the Oregon Brewers Festival (24th – 27th) in Portland. On the 12th head to Flagstaff, Arizona for the Made in the Shade Beer Festival or the Beer, Bourbon, & BBQ Festival in Charlotte, NC. On the 19th Indianapolis stages the Indiana Microbrews Festival. New Englanders get into the act at the Vermont Brewers Festival in Burlington on the 18th and 19th. For those traveling abroad be sure you make a quick stop by the Festival of Beer and Flowers to be held in Laako, Slovenia the 9th through the 13th. Remember, there is no reason to drink responsibly if you take a cab.

In the July ’08 issue of Bon Appetit Jamie Purviance gives you a step-by-step guide to making the ultimate barbecued brisket in the article "Brisket, Low & Slow." Purviance, a grilling guru who has written a handful of cookbooks for Weber, provides a recipe that includes alterations for either gas grillers or charcoal purists and features an intense ancho chili sauce which is described as, “part barbecue sauce, part red wine reduction.” The article also includes tips to help insure that your brisket is tender, juicy and full of flavor. Just in time for barbecue season.

Recently Playboy began a series designed to help you create the ultimate home bar. Their first installment was in the June ’08 issue where they began building the perfect beast with Chelsea Handler's favorite swill, vodka. The article features three drink recipes including the original Bloody Mary from the St. Regis Hotel in New York. Their suggestion for best shot is Solichnaya Elit and for mixed drinks they recommend Absolut 100. For a classic vodka Martini they say use Ketel One for your daily happy hour and Kauffman Vintage for special occasions. They also advocate that, “a unique bottle is always a good icebreaker. She’s never heard of Reyka ($26)? Well, it’s grain vodka made from pure glacial water, distilled using geothermal heat in the tiny Icelandic village of Borgarnes and filtered over 4,000 year-old lava rock.”

Our steward is East Indian. His English is impeccable, but none-the-less a second language. He appears willing to do anything for us, at anytime. I think that if I dropped by Blackberry overboard he would not simply TRY to fetch it, he WOULD fetch it.

We decide to have a civilized lunch with our friends in our cabin: Bombay Curry from the kitchen...special order. And Bloody Mary's(we are on vacation, after all.).

We cite the ingredients: tomato juice, Tabasco, celery salt, lemon juice---oh, and Worcestershire.

This last word brings a look of constrenation to Stanley's face (that can't possibly be his real name, I think).

I repeat: Worcestershire.

Stanley nods and disappears.

We retire to the veranda to observe the ocean, calm as a rug, as it changes from deep blue to teal with the transition of depth beneath the keel as we glide from the Atlantic trench onto the Atlantic shelf.

We return to our stateroom and our supplies have been delivered: vodka, tomato juice, Tabasco, celery salt, lemons and----a glass of scotch on ice?

Moments later, with drinks in hand, we welcome Stanley back as he brings our curry.

There must be some mistake, I say. We didn't order the scotch. And where's the Worcestershire?

To which Stanley replies, "Mum asked for a Whiskey chaser."

It's all in the pronunciation.

I only go to "seen and be seen" kind of places, when the food is actually supposed to be REALLY good. This is one of those places. We went for brunch - and wow!

I had the tea-smoke salmon, spinach, and poached eggs on toasted sourdough with yusu hollandaise sauce.

Some readers may be sensing a trend here - I LOVE eggs benedict. And I'm very picky about it being done right. Public nails this dish. The eggs were poached to perfection, the salmon translucent and fresh, the hollandaise rich, creamy, and buttery, and the spinach was a fresh complement to the dish. To drink - one of the best Bloody Mary's I've ever had. I am prone to thinking that New Orleans haunts do Bloody Mary's right - and Public's evoked that flavor.

A friend had the Irish Breakfast - and we were all wary- but this was also incredible!!

I imagine that every dish here at any time of day is absolutely fabulous. I'll go back and post more soon...

I had a nice brunch at Mancora with my friend last weekend. Like most restaurants they have a special that includes a cocktail and entree for $9.95. I had a Bloody Mary which was nothing special and an entree that was made up of banana fried rice, a rather poor piece of steak, two poached eggs and a buttered English muffin. We also split a $14.00 mixed ceviche with corn and papaya that was excellent. I like Mancora a lot but would recommend just going there for dinner or a regular lunch and skipping the poorly executed brunch menu although the amount of food at $9.95 is certainly a steal it doesn't highlight what the restaurant does best.
