Pra quem chegou atrasado, nesse último final de semana ocorreu um confronto entre Kele Okereke (Bloc Party) e John Lydon (Sex Pistols) no backstage de um festival. Outros artistas acabaram se envolvendo: Ricky Wilson, do Kaiser Chiefs, e Yannis Philippakis, do Foals.

Kele falou à imprensa que a discussão com certa atitude racista de Lydon, enquanto esse se defende argumentando que o problema não envolve raça mas sim, inveja (da parte de Okereke).

A novidade é Gruff Rhys (vocalista do Neon Neon e do Super Furry Animals) que revelou à MTV que no momento da confusão estava no backstage e viu tudo com seus próprios olhos:

"O que Kele falou é absolutamente verdade. Aconteceu. Foi horrível. Kele é um homem muito corajoso e tudo o que disse foi exatamente o que aconteceu", disse Gruff.

Nach Angaben von Okereke, die mittlerweile von Gruff Rhys (Sänger der Super Furry Animals) bestätigt wurden, unterhielt sich Lydon im Backstagebereich mit anderen Musikern. Als Okereke - ein erklärten Fan Lydons - auf diesen zuging und ihn fragte, ob er sich vorstellen könne seine alte Band Public Image Ltd. zu reformieren, rastete Lydon anscheinend aus und beschimpfte den farbigen Sänger unter anderem mit rassistischen Äußerungen. Daraufhin ist eine Schlägerei zwischen Okereke, der Hilfe von Kaisers Chiefs und Foals Mitgliedern erhielt, und drei von Lydons Freunden entbrannt. Die Schlägerei wurde von Securitys beendet.

Lydon hat der Geschichte mittlerweile in einem Statement widersprochen und bezichtigt Okereke die Schlägerei provoziert zu haben, weil er neidisch auf die große Aufmerksamkeit sei, die die Sex Pistols auf dem Festival genossen hätten. Wie realistisch diese Einschätzung ist, lassen Berichte erahnen, die von Auftritten der Sex Pistols auf anderen Festivals berichten...

Damit beweißt sich mal wieder, dass man ein Genre nach über 30 Jahren nicht an seinen heruntergewirtschafteten Begründern messen sollte und dass man es mit dem Legendenstatus mancher Bands nicht übertreiben sollte...

It goes like this: At the Summercase Festival in Barcelona, Kele Okereke went over to spoke to his childhood idol, John Lydon, formerly Johnny Rotten. It was then that members of Lydon's entourage are to have shouted racist abuse at Okereke, including something along the lines of: "Your problem is your black attitude".

Three of the entourage are alleged to have then pounced on Okereke, punching and kicking him before Ricky Wilson (of Kaiser Chiefs) and Yannis Philippakis (of Foals) stepped in to mediate, and then they were attacked. The "unprovoked" attack has left Okereke with facial bruising and cuts to his face and body. Festival security then broke up the fight, while those involved were handcuffed and questioned. The fight was reported to both Spanish and British police.

Lydon has released a statement, carefully worded by the way, saying that "After the show, John Rotten and management remained behind to sign autographs, which we did for four solid hours without incident and had a great time talking to other Spanish bands.

"This seems to have sparked jealousy in certain bands.

"The trouble was brought to us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security.

"It's a shame that the wonderful world of the media is riddled with nonsense like this"

In reference to Okereke, Lydon added: "Grow up and learn to be a true man. When you have achieved as much as I have, come back and talk to me".

All this says that Lydon is a hypocritical cunt. The old bastard seems a little angry at where the music industry is these days and has decided to join in the fun by reforming The Sex Pistols and making just a little more money from their legend. To top it off, he hangs around racist meatheads. And who said he was intelligent and progressive?

Lydon, you're no longer as relevant as you once were and wish to be. Your time is over. You may not agree with the paths that contemporary musicians have chosen. That's fine, your opinion is valid. That doesn't mean that you have the right to so easily excuse an alleged racist attack by those associated with you.

Saturday night in Barcelona, Kele Okereke, post-punk kiddie, and John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten), punk granddaddy, had a spat that turned physical. Any Bloc Party news is enough to get me excited. Any Bloc Party news that involves a physical fight, even more so. Any Bloc Party news that involves a 3-on-1 fist fight, sparked by unjustified racial comments, that ends with severe facial bruising and a split lip... well you can imagine.

Guardian reports:

In an official statement released by the Okereke, who is of Nigerian descent, the singer says he approached Lydon backstage and asked him about the possibility of a reunion for Public Image Ltd, the band Lydon formed following the Sex Pistols demise in 1978. In Okereke's words, Lydon became "intimidating and aggressive while his entourage responded with a racist tirade, including the statement, 'your problem is your black attitude'." An assault allegedly ensued in which three people attacked Okereke.

Several other bands witnessed the incident, with Foals' singer Yannis Philippakis and Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson intervening on the Bloc Party singer's behalf. "It's not an issue of the physical assault, even though it was an unprovoked attack," said Okereke. "It is the fact that race was brought into the matter so readily. Someone as respected and as intelligent as Lydon should know better than to bring race into the equation, or socialise with and encourage those who hold such narrow-minded attitudes." He added: "I am disappointed that someone I held with such high regard turns out to be such a bigot."

You're right Johnny, the media is riddled with nonsense like this. Nonsense that YOU created. And Kele's just a jealous fool? Sorry mate, but you had nothing on the Clash. You're self-proclaimed "glory days" are over. And I use "glory days" loosely. You're just a bitter old man who refuses to let go. I'm sorry but it seems YOU'RE the "jealous fool." Johnny, act your age not your shoe size!

Someone should tell him that Bloc Party has released TWO good albums, so in a sense, they've achieved twice as much as the Pistols ever did. Lydon is seriously in love with his self... and he stands alone. He needs to do us a favor and quit.

Also, why would it be a publicity stunt. Kele has constantly confessed that he hates media and public attention and is very shy. Don't forget about his song "Vision of Heaven." It's all about wanting to be alone. And we wonder why?

Wow that felt good to get off my chest! Anyway, considering the number of bands that witnessed the incident (well over, 50 people), I imagine the truth of Kele's claims (for or against) will surface at some point. I'll keep you posted.

Faz parte do próprio fenômeno, essa confusão entre personalidade e obra artística. Até que você se depara, sei lá, com um Johnny Ramone dando apoio ao Bush, um Morrissey sendo acusado de xenofobia. BBC 6 Music is reporting that Kele Okereke (pictured above, second from left), the lead singer of Bloc Party, is accusing members of John Lydon's entourage of a racist attack after a backstage fight at the Summercase Festival in Barcelona, Spain this past weekend at which Bloc Party and the Sex Pistols were both performing.

Okereke claims that he approached Lydon to ask if Lydon would consider reforming Public Image Ltd. and Lydon became aggressive. Okereke says that he then got into a fight with several members of Lydon's entourage, one of whom allegedly told Okereke, "Your problem is your black attitude."

Lydon denied the racist angle to the fracas, saying:

"I feel very sorry for a man that needs to lie about what was a perfect evening.

"The trouble was brought to us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security."

Okereke was wounded in the altercation and reported the incident to the local police.

The Kaiser Chiefs' lead singer Ricky Wilson was reported to be among those trying to break up the fight.

John contou que a discussão não aconteceu por racismo conforme o integrante do Bloc Party havia falado, mas sim por inveja - segundo ele, Kele tem inveja de seu sucesso. Bem, como todos sabem, Kele Okereke, vocalista do Bloc Party, é negro - e já inclusive admitiu ter sido vítima de diversas formas de preconceito no passado -, e no festival Summercase (que aconteceu no final de semana) ele revelou ter enfrentado mais um problema que, segundo ele, aconteceu apenas por preconceito racial.

Okereke e os outros integrantes de seu grupo deram sua versão da história que, conforme falaram à imprensa, teve seu início no backstage desse festival. Eu sempre fui uma pessoa atrasada, desde o tempo de adolescente. Eu começava a gostar de uma banda, quando ela já não estava mais no Disk MTV e, portanto pouco aparecia na programação normal. Ficava com o que restava da super exposição. Ah, not so bad, right? Minha síndrome de underground não é tão grave, mas certas coisas definitivamente não  deveriam ser banalizadas. Perdi muitos shows incríveis assim. Eu nem conhecia a banda direito, ficava sabendo que eles viriam tocar na minha cidade ou em um lugar que eu poderia facilmente me deslocar para tal, e eu nécas... No entanto, depois de ver notícias, comunidades, fãs histéricos, eu acabava por baixar uma coisa ou outra da banda e pronto, acabava por descobrir que tinha perdido um puta show.

No entanto, dessa vez, surpreendentemente, eu resolvi ler sobre o Bloc Party no exato momento em que novidades quentinhas estão saindo do forno, yay! Eu também comecei a entender o universo indie com um tempo de atraso, always late, right? E admito que tenha muita coisa boa sim, mas, ao mesmo tempo, muita coisa descartável, e no meio disso tudo, Bloc Party sempre foi uma banda que se sobressaía, ao meu ver.

Desde o primeiro CD, eles estampam inúmeras publicações, recebem ótimas críticas, são comparados a grandes nomes da música pop e acabaram por encabeçar um movimento "do chamado neo-new wave, estilo que se apropria dos vocais amargurados-alegres e guitarras com eco, de bandas dos anos 80 como o Cure". No entanto, Kele Okereke é muito mais que um Robert Smith alegre; inteligente e polêmico na dose certa, com seu vocal abafado, discorre sobre homossexualidade, política, drogas, arrependimento, preconceito, acompanhado pelas batidas urgentes características do Bloc Party.

Silent Alarm, seu álbum de estréia, em 2005, contém músicas excepcionais, e que atire a primeira pedra quem nunca dançou ao som de Like Eating Glass. Eu, particularmente, me acabava na pista com essa música. ^^. O tão temido segundo álbum, a Weekend in the City foi cercado de altas expectativas, mas acredito que a banda as tenha utilizado como degrau, porque o resultado final foi uma verdadeira evolução. Ah sim, claro que o mundo virtual soltou a pérola de que teriam tirado a party do Bloc em referência à falta do som alto-astral do primeiro CD. No entanto, as letras se tornaram ainda mais biográficas, intimistas e com atitude e nas melodias o vigor juvenil ainda prevaleceu.

Agora, depois de uma contagem regressiva no site oficial, eles revelaram a surpresa. Então, na verdade, foi o seguinte, existia a contagem, mas não era dito o porquê, e no final tcharam! Foi lançado o último single, o Mercury. Música estranha, eu sempre fico triste ao ver uma banda que eu gosto flertando em excesso com elementos eletrônicos, deixando de lado as tão fundamentais guitarras. O que achei? Experimentalismo demais para minha cabeça. Mas admito que no decorrer vá ficando mais natural.

 Além de termos como novidade essa música, com um vídeo clipe estranho e politizado, a MTV Brasil já confirmou que a banda inglesa vai tocar no VMB em Outubro. Em 2007, o roqueiro Marilyn Manson e a banda Juliette and The Licks foram as atrações internacionais escaladas. “O Bloc Party vem da Inglaterra especialmente para o evento da MTV, toca aqui na festa fechada (Credicard Hall?) volta e retorna cerca de um mês depois para outros shows no país, incluindo o provável espetáculo de encerramento do palco dois do Planeta Terra”, que, aliás, também confirmou a presença da Banda Jesus and Mary Chain.

Intitulada “The secret world of Sam King”, a novela poderá ser vista apenas por usuários do Bebo, espécie de Orkut do Reino Unido.

A gravadora Universal também está participando da produção do programa, ao lado da empresa Monkey Kingdom.

O personagem principal da trama é Sam King, que trabalha como office-boy em uma gravadora e tem um escritório secreto na companhia. Seu objetivo é descobrir bandas novas.

I just absolutely suck at liking the new music releases. I love new artists. But when old artists release new cd's it usually takes me months after the hype to appreciate the music. To me, everything is sounding the same, Beck's Modern Guilt, Bloc Party's new single "Mercury", the new albums from Ratatat, Fleet Foxes, Albert Hammond, Jr., even  Architecture in Helsinki's new EP. Anyways, the only thing somewhat catching my attention, is Lackthereof, mostly because I highly appreciate Menomena, and, Lackthereof is the work of Danny Seim, the mastermind behind Menomena. I can hear some serious potential, especially in a song shown on his myspace "Every Kind Word", I'll have to wait for the release of the album, I can see myself really liking this.

what is everyone else's opinions on the semi-new stuff? ...I just thought about it all some more. I don't like any of it. Sorry.
