Our dependence on foreign oil may have come to a hault, as long as what I’m about to tell you

Our dependence on foreign oil may have come to a hault, as long as what I'm about to tell you works as they say it will. Blacklight Power of Cranbury, New Jersey created a way to convert plain old water into cheap energy. They say it's the next big thing, and that it will work, but many scientists are in disbelief and say that the company's technology violates the basic laws of physics. The founder of blacklight, Dr Randell Mills claims that he has developed a working fuel cell that alters hydrogen atoms in water and release heat. This heat then turns into steam that can run electric turbines. Model can generate 50 kilowatts of electricity which could power up to 7 houses. This new technology costs less than $0.02 per kilowat-hour which beats the national average by $0.07. So, does Dr Mills, his team of 11 scientists and their $60 million in funding have something here? All we can do is wait and see. But I tell you one thing, if it holds true, our world will be much better off. Keep the faith. Keep reusing, renewing and recycling. And hopefully, when Blacklight Power takes this mainstream, Open the Flood Gates and support this brilliant idea. We have nothing to loose and everything to gain. Save the planet, and save your life.

Can you think of any ways to utilize this technology for your next home improvement? How do you "Go Green" when making home improvements or just in your everyday life? Share with us.

Who needs physics when there’s money to be made? The race to discover clean energy breakthroug

Who needs physics when there's money to be made? The race to discover clean energy breakthroughs is seeing its fair share of cold fusion style ideas -- oh-so-much promise, but a looming gap between enthusiasm and scientific reality. In the case of BlackLight Power, a 19-year old company working on what could be a disruptive fuel cell technology, it sounds like an extremely passionate scientist came down with tunnel vision. Or something much worse.

CNN Money profiles the 25-person company based in Cranbury, N.J., which says it has a working prototype that creates a chemical reaction to alter hydrogen atoms, turning water into super cheap clean power. The company's founder, scientist Randell Mills, says the fuel cells can provide electricity that is ridiculously cheap -- less than 2 cents per kilowatt-hour -- and provide 50 kilowatts of electricity, enough to power 6 or 7 houses.

Such a grand technology has allowed BlackLight to raise $60 million in funding from individual investors -- the company's Board includes Michael Jordan, former CEO of Electronic Data Systems and Westinghouse, and Neil Moskowitz, CFO of Credit Suisse First Boston. The investor list also includes Delaware utility Conectiv. Mills tells CNN BlackLight will grow to "500, maybe 1,000 employees" in the next two years (remember that's from its current 25 employees after two decades.)

All of this is in the face of the fact that the large majority of the science community debunks BlackLight's science, says CNN. The article lines up the powerbomb:

By positing that a molecule's energy level can dip below its ground state, he rewrites the principles of quantum mechanics, which are widely viewed as incontrovertible. Perhaps the most widely-known critique of his theory was published by Andreas Rathke of the European Space Agency, who argues that Mills' mathematics is flawed.

But, hey, what's $60 million give or take? There's an energy crisis at hand!

Wealthy individual investors can do as they like, but should probably be prepared for a worse-than-lottery odds of this being a winner. If it works, halleluyah -- wait 'til 2009 to call the flatline, when the company says it will install its fuel cells in power plants.

This weekend I dropped by a friend's "Empty Apartment" party in Center City. He had just moved all his belongings out in preparation for his move to the Midwest to pursue his Ph.D. It was a good time with a random crowd, decent booze, and a DJ.

At one point during the party, a blacklight caught our eyes, and as any curious just-turned-21 year olds would, we started blacklighting our ID's to see if anything actually happened. Try it next time, although if you're from British Columbia you're in for a disappointment.

Even the dollar bill had a surprise for us!

Look closely. Yep. That's Santa Claus. On the dollar bill. In the space traditionally alloted to George Washington, one of America's greatest heroes, there's Santa Claus. I had no idea until that day that this existed.

Yesterday I returned to my parents' for a couple of days, and took advantage of the warm weather last night to try for some moths. There's a great diversity of habitat here, with a mature mixed forest on one side, open scrubby areas to another, of course the wet swamp in the corner of the property. So I was hopeful for some good stuff, and I wasn't disappointed. That all will be the subject of another post. I'll be setting up again tonight (I head back home tomorrow), to hopefully add to the list.

I ran my new trap overnight, but I also put out a sheet and blacklight. I got a number of species at the blacklight that didn't show up in the trap, and some nice ones among them. However, the most interesting thing to come to the sheet last night wasn't a moth at all. Most of the time I just glance over the beetles and wasps and midges (I can only focus on one taxon at a time, and currently it's the moths). But I couldn't ignore this guy. I was leaning forward investigating some moth on the sheet when a very loud buzzing whirr whizzed by my head and flopped on the ground in front of the sheet. Out of the corner of my eye I thought it was a sphinx moth or something big like that, but when I stooped to investigate, it most definitely was not. My second impression was of a cockroach, since it had the same dorso-ventrally flattened body.

But it's neither. In fact, this is a Giant Water Bug, also called Giant Electric Light Bug, after its habit of coming to artificial lights. It was rather alarming in its size and apparent ferocity. Fortunately, the same features made it very easy to identify. I got a clear plastic container and brought it inside to show my mom. She joked that she wasn't going outside at night again.

It's about 6cm (or 2.5") in length, with these giant broad modified front legs that it uses to secure its food. As its name indicates, it's an aquatic insect, primarily, associated with swamps and wetlands. Normally it lives in or near the water, preying on aquatic insects, but supplementing this diet with opportunistically-caught vertebrates such as frogs or small fish. It uses a tubular rostrum to suck out the body fluids of its victims. It can inflict a painful bite, and so also has the name "Giant Toebiter", which I would assume dates back to the days when kids were more likely to wade into mucky water barefoot (I used to do that as a kid, carefree about the creatures inhabiting it; I'm more cautious now, but it's more because of concerns over submerged or buried sharp things, especially glass or metal garbage).

Check out the giant eyes, which it obviously uses in stalking its prey. Plus the giant single claws at the end of each leg. I'm not sure what the white goop on its one eye is. The bugs are found across North America; there's actually three species that are similar in appearance (I'm not sure which one I have here), and which overlap in range. Young look similar, but are obviously much smaller and take smaller prey. It takes them five moults to reach adulthood, which they do in a season; they overwinter buried in the mud as an adult. This site suggests that adults are edible, but I'm not sure I'd find them much of a delicacy.

When I copied the photos to my computer and looked at them closely, I discovered that the bug had been carrying what I took to be mites. You can also see a couple of large ones in the second photo, where it has its wings spread. I have no idea what species they are, or even if they are really mites, and not fleas or some other parasite like that. It seemed to have a good infestation going.

It's amazing how it's possible to overlook something that you would think would be quite obvious. If it comes to lights, why have we never seen it at the porch light? And being so large, you'd think we would have noticed it one of these times when down poking around the ponds. But it somehow escaped our notice to now.

“I used a blacklight and discovered that my pet urinated all over my house!”
Stop. Tak

"I used a blacklight and discovered that my pet urinated all over my house!"

Stop. Take a deep breath. Chances are that your cat or dog did not, in fact, baptize your home in urine. When you turned on the blacklight, did you see bright white spots literally all over your carpet or furniture? Did you begin to think that little Tiger or Muffin must have been secretly sneaking around your home urinating every chance he/she got?

If you take nothing else away from this article, remember this:

Urine is NOT bright white under a blacklight.

It is popular belief--propagated by paranoid landlords waving around the all-seeing blacklight in the faces of their tenants--that urine will reveal itself as a bright white stain under a blacklight. This is simply not true. Urine is actually rather difficult to see because it appears as a very pale yellow color under a blacklight.

Any stain that appears bright white is typically another substance such as a carpet cleaner or a spilled drink. The residue from these substances fluoresces brightly under a blacklight.

Urine fluoresces as a pale yellow color. The best way to see urine under a blacklight is to wait until evening when it is dark. Turn off all interior lighting. Take the blacklight and hold it 1-2 inches above the carpet (or furniture, mattress, etc.). Slowly sweep over the area with the blacklight to identify any light yellow stains.

Once you find the yellow stains, you'll be able to treat with Wee Cleaner. Be aware, though, that while Wee Cleaner will remove the yellow stain, it may leave behind a residue that will fluoresce bright white. This is not a problem in and of itself, but if you have a uneducated landlord, be sure to remove any residue. Residue can be removed by vacuuming first and then rinsing with water or gently rubbing the area with a wet washcloth.

In a Nutshell:

Urine does not appear bright white under a blacklight.

Urine appears as a pale yellow color under a blacklight.

Urine can be difficult to see under a blacklight during the day or in artificial light. Wait until dark and then turn off all the lights before trying to see urine with a blacklight.

Hold the blacklight 1-2 inches above the carpet/furniture/mattress.

If necessary, remove the residue from Wee Cleaner so that nothing white will show up under a blacklight.

Invisible tattoos. What's next? A Jamaican bobsled team?

Having a blacklight in the kitchen is sort of interesting sometimes. It's funny what weird foods glow in the blacklight (mustard). Today, I discovered something else that glows.

I was making a casserole, and I needed to crack three eggs into a mixing bowl. The first two were fine and normal. The third, however, was BRIGHT GREEN AND GLOWING SO MUCH IN THE BLACKLIGHT!! Never had that happen before. I wondered if it was rotten. I sniffed it tentatively, and it may have smelled a little off, but nothing overwhelming. Needless to say, all three eggs went into the garbage disposal, and I even got a new mixing bowl. I don't know what the deal was, but never in my life has any egg previously glowed in the blacklight like that.

I'm sort of glad, because it didn't smell, and if it wasn't for the blacklight letting me know something wasn't right, me & Clint could have eaten that toxic egg!!!!

Makes me nauseous just thinking about it.

When I was a kid, I remember visiting my considerably older and deftly cool hippie cousins. The truth was, I didn't really care about visiting them, I was far more fascinated with their psychedlic display of blacklight posters and whether or not they had added any new ones to the collection since my last visit. I was intrigued by the fuzzy textures and the fact that those images sprang to life with the flick of a switch. Now I realize it was probably the closest thing to acid my impressionable mind could experience without actually sampling the candy.

Now that the swinging 60s and 70s are en vogue again, I thought what better way to resurrect the temptation of blacklight art than to highlight some really cool vintage and retro posters, which, thankfully you can still get today. While the true vintage ones aren't cheap, they certainly do liven up a room!

Lead Pipe Posters has a stash of vintage posters that range from old rock posters to hippie themes like the "Mother Love" poster below, priced at $125 and created in 1971.

or the groovy "Butterfly" illustrated poster below, which sells for $45.

By now you've heard about Windows rootkits--tools malware authors use to hide their evil creations from our antivirus or antispyware software. Because rootkits often hide dangerous viruses, Trojan horses, or spyware, detecting them is important.

Only a few rootkit-detection tools have received attention: the free RootkitRevealer from sysinternals.com, and F-Secure's BlackLight --freeware until September 1. But luckily for us, developers are working on a number of powerful, no-cost tools to detect rootkits.
