Hace algunos días había puesto cinco de las nueve canciones que formaron parte del set de Black Rebel Motorcycle Club en la pasada edición del Vive Latino. Como les había comentado, era posible que consiguiera toda la presentación y aquí la tienen. Si bajaron el otro audio creo que sería mejor que lo borren y bajen este ya que al mi parecer suena un poco mejor, y además está en su totalidad. El setlist lo dejo en los comentarios.

Kalorien, die:
a) Scheinbar die neue Ersatzdroge von Dave Wyndorf. Auch wenn der Gute jetzt einen deutlich größeren Schatten wirft, war es schade, dass der Auftritt seiner Band Monster Magnet nur ein Schatten ihrer selbst war. Übrigens war Wyndorfs Leibesfülle letztlich auch Gesprächsthema Nr. 1 am Freitag. O-Ton: „Boah, ist Dave Wyndorf fett geworden.“
b) Führten sich die tapferen Camper vornehmlich durch Ravioli, Grillgut und Dosenbier zu.

Das Festival-Highlight von A-Z ....

A
Alkohol, der: Gehört in Maßen durchaus zu einem gelungenen Festival dazu. Leider schien er für manche aber auch der einzige Beweggrund für den Hurricane-Besuch gewesen zu sein.

„Anyone Can Play Guitar“: Alter Radiohead-Gassenhauer, der am Festival-Wochenenden von ein paar Trunkenbolden, aber auch der ein oder anderen Band bestätigt wurde.

Ausverkauft: War das Festival in diesem Jahr. Bei näherer Betrachtung des Line-Ups auch wenig verwunderlich.

B
Beste Band der Welt, die: Auch wenn sich die Ärzte so nennen, halten viele Musikfans Radiohead für eben diese. Der Auftritt beim Hurricane sollte diesen Musikfans in die argumentativen Karten spielen. Viel Spektakel auf der Bühne und ein hervorragend aufgelegter Thom Yorke. Ein wahrlich würdiger Festival-Headliner.

Briten-Indie: The Enemy, The Wombats, The Subways, The Pigeon Detectives, The Kooks und äääähm die Kaiser Chiefs. Vornehmlich auf der blauen Bühne anzuschauen.

C
Chaos, das: Wurde perfekt, als manche Leute wegen Platzmangels auf den Wegen zelteten. Aber es gab ja noch einige markante Flaggen zur Orientierung.

D
Drummer, der: englisch für Schlagzeuger. Der bekannteste Drummer des Festivals trat jedoch mit Gitarre auf, denn Dave Grohl rockte mit seinen Foo Fighters als einer der Headliner.
Zwischen „The Pretender“ und „Best Of You“ fast nur Hits und ein schmaleres Akustikset als bei einem regulären Gig der Foos. Da der Auftritt an einem Samstag stattfand, nahm sich Dave Grohl dann auch mal das Recht heraus a la Gottschalk zu überziehen. So macht man das.

E
Einlass, der: Nur ohne Flaschen und andere gefährliche Gegenstände kam man aufs Festivalgelände. Selbstverständlichkeit.

Flunkyball: Beliebteste Kombination aus Sport und Trinkspiel auf dem Campingplatz. Wird bestimmt bald olympisch. >>> weiterlesen!!!!

Yesterday, I went to see the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at Paradiso, Amsterdam. It was the first time I'd ever been at a concert, and I felt a bit out of place at first. I had no clue what to expect. The people seemed nice enough, a bit of a hipster crowd, as I expected. No goths, thank god (no offence). The venue wasn't as big as I expected, it was very cozy. The Brothers Movement opened the show. They sounded a lot like BRMC and they were gone after half an hour or so. Didn't get much of an impression. After that, the floor started filling up and it was starting to get crowded, but not uncomfortably crowded by any means. When Peter and Robert showed up on stage, it suddenly got very, very REAL. I was actually SEEING them, not indirectly on tv or computer, but they were just THERE, being as real as can be. And that's when I really started to enjoy myself there. They played for two-and-half hours in total, and their level of commitment to the crowd was aweinspiring. I've heard that they played another eight songs after the show. Wish I could've been there, but it was getting very late for a schoolnight. They played a handful of acoustic songs during the show, and it was enough to make me happy. I'm more into their Howl/acoustic stuff than anything else. All in all, it was an amazing (first) concert experience and I'm thankful to my sister for pushing me to get those tickets. The only thing I regret is having to face the morning after, which I delayed as long as I could. My memories of the show resemble a dream more than anything. I know that I was there, but it feels so far away already. I've never been a huge BRMC fan, just a casual one. Last night definitly sparked something up for me and I love Rob and Pete a lot more than I had before. That's all I have to say =).

Also, some people seem to think Black Rebel Motorcycle club is an embarassing name for a band. I couldn't disagree more. I would never feel any shame in saying **I love BRMC <3<3**.

Da ich mir bisher bei CD-Reviews vorzugsweise die rhetorische Pampe aus dem gonzo-journalistischen Buchstabensack gehobelt habe, dabei etwas provokativ und polemisch agiert habe und deshalb von einigen Spatzenhirnen (zu recht?) kritisiert wurde [gibt es hier nachzulesen (Review & Comments)], versuche ich mich nun mal an einer etwas "ernsteren" Herangehensweise, welche die öffentliche Meinungsmacherpresse und PR-Opfer à la Visions, Intro und Co. heutzutage leider als Status Quo deklariert hat. Während ich mich aufgrund dieser Ansicht im Kreuzfeuer der Kritik befinde, erscheint Bellavista's Debüt derweil auf KNTRST Records, einem bis dato jungfräulichen Hamburger Indie-Label. Vielleicht kennt noch jemand die Band Vue, die ihrer Zeit Alben auf Sub Pop, GSL und RCA veröffentlichten und dabei für Bands wie Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, ...Trail of Dead und The Rolling Stones eröffneten. Bellavista ist eben aus diesen Vue entstanden und paddeln nun im fuzzigen Fahrwasser von Jesus and Mary Chain, Spacemen 3 und Gun Club. Da ich nun die fettgedruckten Wörter des Pressetextes abgeschrieben habe, habe ich laut einigen Musikfaschisten, die Artikel 5 Absatz 1 des Grundgesetztes ignorieren, meine Pflicht erfüllt. Schade nur, dass die Musik und was sie eigentlich ausmacht, was sie subjektiv in einem hervorruft dabei komplett außen vor bleibt. Das kann's doch auch nicht sein!?

Aquí tienen la presentación, incompleta, de Black Rebel Motorcycle Club en el Vive Latino. El audio es tomado de la transmisión del festival por parte de Telehit, sin embargo la calidad no es perfecta ya que se escucha un poco bajo; ese es el único detalle, de ahí en fuera todo está bien. Con un poco de suerte se van a poder conseguir las 4 canciones restantes que no están incluidas en el archivo.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club se queda sin baterista

El anuncio lo hizo Nick Jago, baterista de la banda, por medio de su sitio oficial así como por MySpace. No es la primera vez que queda fuera del grupo; la primera ocasión fue por ahí del 2005 debido a problemas que tuvo con las drogas y por ende algunas visitas a centros de rehabilitación. Las causas por las que deja a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club se han aclarado, y básicamente se debe a que Nick Jago en estos momentos se encuentra más concentrado en su proyecto como solista, dejando un poco de lado su trabajo con BRMC.

Pueden escuchar una canción de lo que está haciendo en su sitio. Esto no parece algo definitivo por lo que probablemente en algunos años vuelva a formar parte de la alineación.

I just had dinner with Rob and Pete and, well, I'm not in the band anymore. They are going into rehearsals tomorrow with Leah, she just finished touring with The Raveonettes and is super nice and cool. They presented it to me like they need a break, I took it as I am fired again and to be honest with you I respect their decision. I don't make it easy for them, I hope to be able to play with them again in the future as a reunion as there is really no bad feeling other than we all wanna be happy and right now we are not. Esta entrada la iba a hacer hasta el domingo en la tarde pensando que el material comenzaría a salir más o menos a esa altura. Por el momento sólo van a ser fotos y una pequeña entrevista. Y acá va la entrevista con Nick Jago, la calidad del video no es muy buena pero luego subirán una mejor. Un amigo tiene lo que pasaron en Telehit así es que haré todo lo posible por subirlo aunque siempre se me complica un poco subir en ese formato ya que por lo general son gigas y toma mucho tiempo.

Tocaron American X lo cual creo que no fue muy acertado por ser festival y porque tenían muy poco tiempo para tocar. Este fue el setlist de la noche:

Por el momento no les dejo mucho, solamente una entrevista con Robert Levon Been que salió hoy en el Reforma; por ahí habla un poco de lo que aquí mencioné con respecto a buscar un lugar pequeño en donde pudieran presentarse con un show propio.

Por cierto, como es costumbre para algunos bandas, Robert Levon Been junto con su staff no dejaron pasar la oportunidad de estar en el país y no visitar las Pirámides de Teotihuacan, seguramente en la semana habrán imágenes de eso.

Los que conocen a la banda sabrán que son demasiado accesibles con sus fans y en gran parte de las ocasiones, si no es que en todas, suelen hacer un set post-concierto, ya sea en el bar del lugar, fuera del hotel o donde sea que se preste la situación...pues bien, esta vez no fue tan diferente ya que a pesar de que aun no se presentan en el país, un número muy reducido de fans tuvieron la suerte de que Robert Levon Been fuera a la habitación por su guitarra para deleitarlos con unas cuantas canciones. El improvisado set se conformó por Mercy, Weight Of The World, Sympathetic Noose, entre algunas otras.

Es todo por el momento, hay más detalles pero los dejaré para la siguiente ocasión en la que vuelva a escribir algo sobre la banda. Si no van a asistir el Vive Latino de todos modos podrán verlo a través de Telehit, con suerte transmitirán el set de BRMC y se tendrá un buen bootleg de su presentación.

Tuesday night, thanks to the always ear-to-the-scene Brent Davis, we checked out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at a free show at Warehouse Live.

I've seen these guys many times over the last 2 years, and have to say they have become one of my favorite live acts. Those lights, that bass line, and Robert. :-)

In attendance was Brentabousko, David Cobb, Matthew, Mark Austin (aka MCA Photo), Rob, and even ran into MagsMac and the Barstool crew.

Good times, good times. I sure love me some BRMC.

Random Rules, PGE Edition

(This idea was totally stolen from my good buddy Jarrett over at the Dude Weekend blog, which he in turn had pilfered from The Onion's A/V Club website.)

From Jarrett: "For those not familiar with it, The Onion A/V Club has a feature called "Random Rules" where they get a musician or celebrity to set their mp3 players on random, play a bunch of tracks, and comment on whatever pops up. It's an interesting insight into their artistry, so in an attempt to feign both insight and artistry I propose we all do the same."

Duly noted.

1. The Radio Dept.-Deliverance

Clearly a holdover from the Pet Grief sessions, this cut appeared on last year's This Past Week e.p. There's something so utterly simplistic, effortless and derivative yet engaging about The Radio Dept.'s aesthetic. They're Swedish, and are on Labrador Records, featuring, pound for pound, one of the strongest label rosters in indie music. They're like the Rays this season; doing lots of little things right, playing small ball with the best of them, and occasionally juicing one out of the park.

2. Pulp-This Is Hardcore

File under "Sleaziest Songs Ever Written". Without doubt the most Scott Walker-indebted song Jarvis ever wrote. I have to be in a certain frame of mind to sit through the whole song, but when I do, all I can think about is how critics always bad-mouthed Jarvis's singing. He never utilized much range before this song, because most of Pulp's tunes didn't require it. But his vocals on This Is Hardcore are easily some of the most impassioned and expressive ever laid down on tape/hard disk during the Britpop era.

3. Mixtapes & Cellmates-Something Less Than Last Time

I don't recall how I found out about these guys. Popmatters, maybe? Anyway, my first exposure to them was their song 'Quiet', which has a weird Bright Eyes-meets-Dntel/Postal Service vibe. While unfortunately none of their albums have made it onto American record store racks, eMusic does have them available for download, and I highly recommend everything you can get your grubby little digital paws on.

4. The Charlatans (UK)-I Can't Even Be Bothered

Before they became fixtures of Cool Britannia-era Britpop known for epic keyboard-led jams, these guys were all about early-90s dance-rock. My abiding memory of this song in particular was how I let my friend Tom borrow a mix-tape of Charlatans tracks one Summer while we were in college, and how utterly sick he got of them as a result of only having that one tape in his car. Oh well. He can just consider it preemptive payback for making me eat at CiCi's pizza buffet over his bachelor party weekend.

5. Division of Laura Lee-The Truth Is Fucked

I'm not sure exactly what DOLL's politics are. My memory of this song and its parent album is sort of lost in the haze of that stretch back in the early 2000s when it seemed like everyone I knew (and myself) were in the thrall of garage-rock. I'm glad I held onto this one, though. While the vitriol of those bands is pretty much an interchangeable affectation, DOLL sort of presaged the mid-2000s trend of new new wave by infusing their garage-y inclinations with a darker, sinister post-punk edge. 'The Truth Is Fucked' has a killer groove that wouldn't sound out of place on the first Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album.

6. The Cardigans-Rise & Shine

There's not much to say about this one. Catchy pop tune sung by a frostily beautiful Swede? Sign me up. I will say this, though: I would not mind being lost in a strange country and running into Nina Persson, even if she sang to me instead of providing good directions.

7. Wye Oak-Regret

I just found out about this great duo from right here in Baltimore a couple months ago. Sort of a sunnier version of Giant Drag without all the grunge-y mid-90s-isms. 'Regret' is actually a gentle little folk ditty sung by drummer/keyboardist Andy Stack on Wye Oak's debut, If Children. The whole album is sort of a cross-section of all the best parts of indie-rock from the last 20 years. Pick it up!

La mercancía oficial que las bandas llevan a sus conciertos siempre me ha llamado un poco la atención y más cuando la modifican dependiendo del lugar donde van a tocar. Lo malo de el merchandise oficial es que, al menos aquí, tiene precios algo elevados y que por lo general la calidad de maquila y diseño no lo justifican.

BRMC últimamente ha hecho posters para algunos de sus shows los cuales son un tanto 'personalizados' según la ciudad. El punto es que hace unos días mientras visitaba su MySpace vi el más reciente y por un momento llegué a pensar que ese sería el de su presentación en el Vive Latino, sin embargo resultó ser para un fecha que hicieron recientemente en Wisconsin. No es gran cosa, solo pongo esta entrada ya que me pareció un poco curioso el diseño que hicieron; aquí está la imagen, cuando la vean se darán cuenta porqué creí que era de la Ciudad de México.

Por fin salieron los horarios para el festival, lo primero que hice fue ver cuanto tiempo tocaría Black Rebel Motorcycle Club y es más o menos lo que esperaba (45 minutos). Esa banda era la única razón por la que por vez primera hubiera asistido a ese festival, sin embargo tenía la - muy inocente - esperanza de que les dieran más tiempo.

Desde que anunciaron su participación en el Vive Latino se sabía que sería en el escenario principal pero no sé si hubiera sido mejor haber estado en alguno de los otros dos que son más pequeño, de ser así probablmente mañana hubiera comprado mi boleto. Por cierto el escenario principal me parece que siempre ha sido el rojo pero en esta ocasión lo pusieron como verde. Los horarios están abajo, para ver la imagen más grande den click sobre ella.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club nailed the raspy quality of their vocals at the show, an element I predicted might have been a tweak added while in-studio, but instead became a pleasant live surprise. They're like Kings of Leon with a noticeably rockier edge that just oozes a certain sense of being wholly and completely badass. In the purpose of full disclosure, I'll admit that I had to leave Canopy early (I had three finals and three shows to cover this week, I've been swamped), but caught the majority of the show, which was undeniably impressive.

The crowd was packed, the fans into it and the lights were insane — which, considering Umphrey's McGee was on the same stage just the night before, is quite a statement. At certain times, the lights would almost be completely off, and then all the sudden, the club would be flooded with light. It was definitely an effect that fit their music well, although the strobe-like, pulsating lights used every once in a while were completely blinding.

All in all, it was pretty much what I had expected — an entertaining, well-performed show. Check out the video for a glimpse of it...and apologies in advance for the sound getting blown out at times.

My wise comrade SG made a comment about Incubus while we were sitting in downtown Austin traffic listening to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. at SXSW 2008. He pointed out that Incubus got popular because they were a "movement" band that happened to be somewhat talented. Then they just turned into a really damn good band - period. They ditched the dreadlocks and got serious.

Ah, what a coincidence. The SG man himself just called me up. Here's what he has to say about Incubus as of 9:55 p.m tonight: "I think those have been the most successful bands in history: The ones who come up with an original sound who push it as a movement more than a mainstream style, and then do whatever they want as far as songwriting and developing into songwriters for the rest of their careers...Once you have their attention, it's all about how smart you are as a songwriter." This song is a good example of that. Well said, Goldschmithey.

I liked Candlebox's second and third records a lot more than their debut - the one with all the singles you still hear on "alternative" radio. The bummer is my Lucy disc is so scratched that iTunes will only import this song. Oh well. At least iTunes managed to swallow Happy Pills, the band's best and most under-appreciated album. If you like good songs of any kind, you'll like that record – regardless of what you think of Candlebox.

My old pal David Cook has been bringing as much integrity to American Idol as that show's ever seen for about three months now, but it's just starting to sink in that the guy might actually win the thing. Crazy thought for those of us who've known David for years. He'll be playing Tulsa's new BOK Center this summer for the Idol tour and my gut tells me it'll be a little bigger than than this Tulsa bar gig we put him on almost a year ago today when his solo record came out:

What a difference a year makes: Upside is broken up, Malan Darras is playing with a band called Born A Number and David's hamming it up with Neil Diamond on FOX.

I finally gave in and voted for him this week. It was the first time I voted for a contestant on that blasted show, but I didn't feel guilty about it at all. David's the real deal, and he makes a mean whiskey-diet when he's behind the bar! I think it's safe to say he won't be bartending again anytime soon. My liver is thankful for this, and my ears are pleased that a real singer is finally getting love at some place besides a smokey bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.

Coachella, the mother of all alternative music festivals, took place this past weekend, and even if you weren't fortunate enough to take in the cornucopia of sounds from the California deserts, a number of outlets are providing extensive video, audio and blogging coverage. In addition to the headline-grabbing indie coronation of Prince and the chilling comeback performance of Portishead, a number of performers coming soon to Madison also made their mark.

Tegan and Sara, performing at the Barrymore next Tuesday, May 6, first gained a moment in the spotlight three years ago on a small stage of Coachella and performed on a larger stage at this year's festival. The Canadian twins continue to gain notoriety on a larger scale for their quirky stage banter and emotional songwriting, blogging a number of entries from the festival for RollingStone.com. Tegan and Sara are also just off the heels of an impressive performance last week of their current anthem, "The Con" on the Tonight Show, viewable below:

Taking a break from the midst of a tour that is selling out nearly every theater it touches, The Swell Season (Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova) also performed an alluring set; a preview of what's to come when the duo plays the Overture Center on Monday, June 16. The "Once" stars were recently featured in the San Francisco Chronicle discussing their newfound fame. Recent acts passing through town this spring, including Man Man, Vampire Weekend, Stars and Jens Lekman also played the festival.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are currently touring around the globe and have been grabbing headlines from a decision earlier this year to part ways with its record label, RCA. They are currently going it alone, looking toward independent release options in the near future. BRMC will be hitting the High Noon Saloon with guests The Duke Spirit on Saturday, May 3.

Performing at the Annex the Sunday night following BRMC, Ra Ra Riot will be splitting a bill with The Little Ones for a $10 show -- likely the last time Madison music fans will be able to see the up-and-coming indie-string-pop troupe, recently interviewed on GrooveShark.com, in such an intimate venue.

In other news, we are happy to announce that Madison fave Lyle Lovett will be passing through down this summer -- on Sunday, July 13, at Overture Hall. The Capitol Times wrote a nice preview of the show, for which tickets went on sale this past Saturday.

Review: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club w/ Duke Spirit @ The Dame - 4/19

My friends Laura Cox & Daniel Black visited The Dame on Saturday night for Duke Spirit & Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Laura took photos while Daniel's review is below. Earlier in the day, BRMC played a ten song set at CD Central and I was able to catch that show, so check that post out if you can't get enough BRMC.

There was an air of excitement in Lexington on April 19. Not only did Black Rebel Motorcycle Club & the Duke Spirit play some face-melting rock 'n roll at the Dame on Saturday night, but both bands played an amazing in store set to help celebrate Liela Moss' (singer of The Duke Spirit) birthday and National Independent Record Store Day.

Unfortunately, the days of The Dame are numbered with a giant hotel in development to occupy the space (ugh!!). This was certainly one of the bigger shows the Dame has hosted in awhile (I don't count Kenny Chesney). In typical Dame fashion, it was sweaty, packed, and LOUD!

The Duke Spirit opened up the night playing songs off of their new album Neptune that was just released here in the states on April 8th. I'll be the first to admit that I love most British bands, but I am definitely a sucker for a British band with a very attractive female vocalist who plays a neon green harmonica. Truly, what else could a man ask for in a woman? They were certainly a solid rock band. Great vocals, some very stellar guitar work accompanied by nice effect petals, and the aforementioned loudness.

I had only seen Black Rebel Motorcycle once before and that was earlier in the day when Robert Levon Been (Bass) and Peter Hayes (guitar) treated all of us to a rainy and intimate acoustic set at CD Central. BRMC started at 11pm and played one of the longer sets I've witnessed at The Dame, leaving the stage at 1:15am. They started the show with "666 Conducer." They played deep into their catalog and certainly utilized some of those longer songs stretching some of those songs that are 6-8 minutes to 10-12 minutes of kick-assery. One of the highlights of the night had to come when Peter Hayes broke out the violin bow and proceeded to play his guitar Jimmy Page style.

Gritty. Raw. Soulful. Energetic. Rocking. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club puts on a show that no person should miss.
