Black Kids are an American indie pop band who formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 2006. Rolling Stone called them one of ten "Artists to Watch" in 2008 and were featured on this blog before here.

They are releasing their debut album "Partie Traumatic" on July 7th in the UK and July 22nd in the US. You can sample the new single "Hurricane Jane" and another song that I like from the album after the cut...

The Black Kids' debut album “Partie Traumatic” is a pretty solid effort for a first run. Most of the tracks are upbeat and exciting with really catchy verses.

The first single “I’m not Gonna Teach your Boyfriend how to Dance with You” is by far the best track on the album and boasts a pretty interesting music video. It has pretty much everything you could want with cheerleaders and funky backgrounds. There is even an awesome George Washington era styled duel, except with lasers.

“Listen to Your Body Tonight” is another stand out featuring some nice synthesizer work and front man Reggie Youngblood sounding an awful lot like The Cure’s Robert Smith.

“Partie Traumatic” is ten tracks of synth-pop that you are likely to sing and dance to all summer long.

En ce moment, je me fais une orgie de White Stripes. C'est dingue comment on peut se rendre compte qu'une simple musique peut autant nous inspirer. En une semaine d'écoute intensive, j'ai voulu faire un film, une peinture murale, un dessin type grand format, manger, dormir, se réveiller, ne rien faire...Bref, toute ma vie s'est orchestré au rythme de la guitare folle de Mr Jack.. Je suis un peu sociopathe sur les bords mais ça va. Une dernière réflexion aussi inutile que le reste : je trouve que les White Stripes ont le don de finir merveilleusement bien leur album...une véritable et mémorable fin.

Outre Mr Jack, j'ai enfin repris gout aux Franz Ferdinand. En effet, on va dire que j'avais fait une legere overdose depuis l'époque où l'on pouvait me dire groupie (Oh Alex il est trop beau, Oh Alex il sort avec machin....aaah....merci c'est fini!Sauvé!). Là, je prends mieux la chose je pense. C'est sur que la voix du chanteur me fera toujours autant cédé à ce pop/rock survitaminé, sans aucun regret, d'ailleurs.

Je vais éviter de mettre dans cette playlist le duo de Beck et Jack White car la qualité est pourrie mais tout de même c'est à attendre, donc c'est par ici. Finalement, l'album des Dirty Pretty Things est vraiment excellent, c'est sur que le premier reste légèrement au dessus mais pour tout vous dire ce ne gâche pas mon plaisir... Pour la playlist, je dois vous avouer que je ne sais plus où j'ai découvert ces musiques donc veuillez m'excuser si je ne cite pas toutes les références....

Pourquoi les écouter?

Voilà c'est simple.Ces titres sont tout simplement excellent sinon je ne les mettrais pas.Ce duo avec Damon Albarn est tout simplement splendide, un tube à l'état nature. Le morceaux des Dirty Pretty Things sont un hommage à l'album qui, je l'ai déjà dit, est tres tres bon, à savoir que Plastic Hearts sera leur nouveau single après Tired Of England.Le remix de Duke Dumont est un voyage type ovni au pays de la cité des enfants perdus, pratiquement rien à voir avec l'original mais on ne va pas s'en plaindre.Le remix des MGMT ressemble quant à lui à l'original en lui donnant une allure encore plus retro, perso, je préfère largement cette version. Je continue sur ma lancée " Norman Cook est un dieu de l'électro, et quelque soit le nom qu'il prend ça sera toujours un dieu" avec un autre titre d'été/soleil/sable fin/beach volley qu'on savoure avec une piña colada bien fraiche...Hoppípolla toujours aussi belle,  le remix de Bloc Party n'est pas mal non plus.

Anyway, while in Bristol I’ve demand that he takes me to Cathy Barry’s house to meet her. He replied that he doesn’t actually know her, just because she lives in Bristol too. I’m not accepting this, I will meet the legendary Cathy and that’s that! In the meantime I’ll just have to get my fill of her in Busty Brits Abroad tonight on Television X.

Definitely my favorite group right now, this Cambridge, Mass based band is currently working on a new album in New York, but for now, a few tracks off their collection of B-sides titled Pretty Penny are circulating the internet. I personally don't know much about them, but their songs, which may well be described as "electronic indie rock" or "indie-synth dance shazz," are pretty spectacular. No, I don't know what indie synth dance shazz means either, but I do know that the group sounds like Animal Collective, MGMT, and The Black Kids, and I do know that it sounds really really good. For a better description, we turn to lead singer and keyboardist Michael Angelakos and company:

So like, get it out of your mind that this is yet another avant-retro scumbag project, some kind of 21st-century revival of that 80's electropop revival from the late 90's. No, no, that's not it at all. It's more like...well, remember when Peter Gabriel and Scritti Politti crashed your Christmas party sophomore year and did a set of Prince covers on your little cousin's toy piano? Do you remember how pure, how beautiful everything looked outside that night, the snowflakes caught in floodlight against the black of the sky? And that girl--what was her name--how gorgeous she looked in that weird white sweatshirt with all that fake sparkly stuff in her hair? It was NOW, right now, and there wasn't anything else but now. Yeah, that's it. But that's not all of it.

Hurry up and jump on the bandwagon so you can say "I knew them when." A video of the group practicing the track "Tons of Guns" can be found here on YouTube (sound quality not great, but you can tell it's going to be a good song nontheless) and it from what I can tell they consist of 1 drummer, i guitarist, and 3 keyboardists (ahhh...thus the indie-SYNTH). Het gewenste scenario kwam uit want ook mijn ploegmaats wonnen. Ondanks onze 4-0 was de eindoverwinning nog niet binnen want het team waarvan we verwacht hadden de grootste concurrentie te hebben, MSV (een schaakvereniging uit het Meetjesland), had ook de maximumscore. Een onderlinge confrontatie snelschaak (5 minuten per partij) zou over de eindwinnaar beslissen. Op bord 1 (het sterkste bord) waren wij met onze Belgische kampioen bij de -16 jarigen favoriet, op bord 4 (Willlem) ook. Jan op bord 2 kreeg een evenwaardige tegenstander en ikzelf was de underdog. Ik was dan ook nog eens behoorlijk gespannen begonnen en had snel een volledige minuut achterstand, vrij dodelijk als je er maar vijf hebt. Maar kijk, mijn tegenstander ging in de fout, wat ik dankbaar afstrafte, waarna ik kon vaststellen dat Zottegem 1 het snelschaakduel met 3,5-0,5 (gelijkspel van Jan) gewonnen had.

Intussen staat het in Duitsland-Spanje 0-1, een resultaat dat betekent dat ik het voetbalspel op mijn werk win. Is er een lottotrekking vandaag?

Monday, fucking rubbish isn't it? Personally, I'm in a foul mood. Not just mildly glum, but actually genuinely, dangerously annoyed. Not about anything in particular you'll understand, but just angry at the universe, the spacey big bastard!!!

That notwithstanding, it's time for a new Monday Mixtape. Thankfully, it's such a good selection that it has lifted my spirits to the level where my cats are no longer fearing that I may chase them with sticks for the mere crime of looking at me a bit funny, and having better tails than me.

It seems, from feedback, that it wasn't clear that the mixtape is actually available to listen to. We've not just stuck up a list of songs, they're actually online and available for you to hear, with links to buy them. Incidentally, if you do like the songs, we would encourage you to buy the songs. Most of the bands we post are not stadium rock millionaires.

This post is littered with links to the mixtape this week, so even if you pass out from anticipatory hyperventilation and fall on the keyboard you should still be taken to the mixtape.

So, here it is, in all it's glory, this weeks Monday Mixtape. I have less to say about each of this weeks tracks due the aforementioned bad mood, but have a listen and let us know what you think.

1. God Fearing Atheists - Bellgrove Hotel

I love this song, jangly acoustic guitar, ripping lead guitar and all round awesomeness. I defy you to not be singing towards the end. One of Glasgow's best-kept secrets, though hopefully not for long.

2. Gillian Welch - Revelator

Genuinely Splendid all the way through. Very, very talented lady.

3. Sigur Ros - Staralfur

Not one of their new ones, but from Aegatis Byrgun, which i think is the best album. A good introduction to their more difficult stuff if you only know them from the BBC's constant misuse of 'Hoppipolla'.

4. Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal

A recommendations from ELM regular reader Bertrand D'oyly Carte. Let us, and him know your thoughts. Totally incongruous with the summery weather we're having (for our readers in the Northern Hemisphere), but it wouldn't be ELM if we did what you expected. of course, if you live in the Antarctic, it shoud be right up your crevasse. Mind the melting Ice Shelf!

5. Lykke Li - Little Bit

This is excellently produced and she sounds pretty, so it's in! Currently touring, ignore the ineviatbale Bjork comparisions (bit kooky and nordic, that's where the similarity ends) and enjoy. We think this sounds a bit more like Múm.

6. Ida Maria - Oh My God

Ida Maria has caused some controversy on here. Some love her, some say she's rubbish. The second camp are wrong, as you will lwearn from this. Judge for yourself, and let us know what you think.

7. Great Lake Swimmers - Your Rocky Spine

This is a marvelous song. Floaty vocals, men with beards, banjos and lyrics that paint pictures. Ahh.

8. The Hold Steady - Sequestered in Memphis

New release from ELM favourites, The Hold Steady. It's simply awesome. We cannot wait for teh album.

9. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Today's Lesson

Another new one, from the ever excellent Mr Nick Cave. Still got it.

If you haven't heard that I got very drunk at the recent Ting Tings gig and decided that Katie White was the greatest thing i'd ever seen, then you've not been reading this blog enough! Sort your shit out! Personally, I like it, and if you don't, well, that's ok.

Anyway, I feel I should confess to some dirty secrets, songs in my head that I feel dirty for.  Firstly the fucking ting tings, who's gimmick of just being vox&drums is filth - but new single 'thats not my name' is sickeningly catchy.  It's a bad note in my books of self-deprecation and musical-cuntery that the first time I heard the ting tings was on Jonathan Ross!  Not bad enough that this is a chat show, but one hosted by a humourless knob. 

Last week on the show, another filthy habit of mine appeared.  The chorus to Hurricane Jane by Black Kids sounds like a cat vomiting up a SNES soundtrack, and overkill as one of the bands of the year would easily turn me off, but theres something about the calm, somewhat soulful voice of Reggie Youngblood with sleazy statements uttered in a way that would make racist-homophobic-texan-sheriffs swoon, I can't resist.  When, one fateful day, I got a bundle of promo cd's through the post and saw a copy of Hurricane Jane inside; I actually squealed.  Like a stud in a film that all the girls wanna get with, they know he's bad.. but he's so good at it.

One of the darkest moments in both my relationships with my best friend Chris and my girlfriend (both are otherwise lovely, but this is sick..) is when they met for the first time and soon discovered they were both Fallout Boy fans!   I feel like such a hypocrit now I've seen the video for their cover of Jacksons 'beat it' - again it's a catchy fucker, takes the song to a better level and features the guy who played Buster in arrested development (trust me its the best programme since... err... snuffbox!) in the video as a karate teacher.   

Also, though I've only caught the last minute of it every time it's been on tv, Violet Hill by, *gulp*, Coldplay seems awfully pleasant.  No longer gut-wrenchingly dry, like eating 5 digestive biscuits all at the same time. 
(if James is reading this; I understand you don't want to be friends anymore... but we all know what you dance to when your drunk, boy!)

Anyway.. got those weights off my shoulders.

Tomorrow sees the release of Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man's 1st opus (they used a thesaurus and it was the same as EP, I think) The Lay Of The Land; The Turn Of The Tide on transgressive records, a very positive review will follow this week.

But California's Black Kids are, we are told in the music press, causing something of a buzz. That's music-industry speak for 'hype' and it is rarely a good thing. The new Coldplay album, for instance, has a 'buzz' about it and is highly unlikely to trouble the scorers in the Greatest Albums Ever polls. Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong had a 'buzz' about them and frankly, I'd rather be operated on without anaesthetic than listen to them. Hype often covers a depressing fact; a lack of any real talent.

Black Kids, though, look like they might just make it. Unconventional looking, and certainly unlikely to be pin-ups, they bring on stage a real rush of energy and spirit. Their nirvana is clearly early-80's British pop - on my notes the scrawled names 'ABC', 'Lloyd Cole', and 'Aztec Camera' are visible - suffused with an almost touching reverence of the poppier side of the Cure and a clear love of the Go! Team. It's all trebly guitars and synth stabs. They do have some great songs too; 'I've Underestimated My Charm Again' and new single 'Hit The Heartbreaks' are great pop songs, performed with an innocent glee that only bands on their first swing through are capable of. Black Kids are having fun, and it takes a real curmudgeon not to get swept up in it.

There is an argument which says that at the moment they are merely paying homage to the afore-mentioned bands. It's a fair point, though at this early stage of their development a forgiveable one. Their potential is what is important, beautifully illustrated by 'I'm Not Gonna Teach Him How To Dance With You', a fabulous, gender-confused slice of pure pop ecstasy. It's music which should only be released on 45, a spiralling, lovely technicolour mess of a thing which is so cute and shabby it resembles a Dulux dog. If this is what they are capable of, then the future's bright, the future's black.

So, ignoring that irritating 'buzz' sound, there's a lot behind the hype to like. One to keep an eye on.

Glastonbury has already hit the headlines a fair bit this year after the controversial booking of Jay-Z as a headliner, many people not thinking him suitable for a festival that's become synonymous with boys who play guitars. Good on them for being a bit different and not featuring the exact same bands as every other festival year after year.

While usually there's a huge rush for tickets and many are left disappointed, they still haven't sold out so if you want to go, you can! You'll have to go through the registration process that prevents ticket touting, you can read all about that over at http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk.

Also headlining are Kings of Leon and The Verve. [Kings of Leon are a band that have somehow completely passed me by for years by the way, I couldn't even name a song so if anybody has any recommendations, throw them this way!]

The site continues to grow, it has been expanded by another 40-50 acres this year. Who knows when it will end...

Over the weekend you'll be able to find The Fratellis, Amy Winehouse, Leonard Cohen, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Kate Nash, Massive Attack, Ben Folds, Vampire Weekend, Foals, Elbow, Black Kids, Mark Ronson, Newton Faulkner, Martha Wainwright, CSS, MGMT, Lightspeed Champion, Emmy the Great, Stars, The National, Seth Lakeman and so so so much more. It's safe to say that you'd be hard pushed to not find something you like.

Starting August 1-3 in Grant Park Chicago this musical, cultural community experience is a one of a kind sensory blowing must see adventure. Grant Park takes the center stage to host this massive event and provides the perfect atmosphere for this music extravaganza.
