How would your life read if it is written as a book? How was the prologue, the early pages were written? How's each chapter progressing, do you know where it is going? If you're given the chance to write the epilogue of your life story, how do you want it to end, and how do you want to be remembered?

During the decade of 1900 to 1909 the following books were the Number 1 Bestsellers in the United States. I've listed them by the year that they reached that status along with the author.

To Have And To Hold by Mary Johnston in 1900

The Crises by Winston Churchill (American Author) in 1901

The Virginian by Owen Wister in 1902

Lady Rose’s Daughter by Mary Augusta Ward in 1903

The Crossing by Winston Churchill (American author) in 1904

The Marriage of William Ashe by Mary Augusta Ward in 1905

Coniston by Winston Churchill -American Novelist in 1906

The Lady of the Decoration by Frances Little in 1907

Mr. Crewe’s Career by Winston Churchill (American novelist) in 1908

The Inner Shrine by Basil King in 1909

It is interesting to see that Winston Churchill, the American novelist and not the English statesman, had 4 No. 1 Bestsellers in this 10 year span.

In future posts, I'll see if I can review any of these books written 100 years ago.

Originally posted at Paper Palate (paperpalate.net) on July 17, 2008.

One of the hot new genres among nonfiction publications is the “culinary adventure.” The formula is simple really, a chef or restaurant critic takes a vacation where they do nothing but experience wonderful cuisine and along the way they learn a little something about life. Perhaps we should call it Foodie Literature because it is nurtured by the fact that America’s palate is finally awakening. Recently I got a chance to read my first “culinary adventure” when I received a copy of the Saucier’s Apprentice (W.W. Norton, New York) by Bob Spitz.

Spitz is neither a chef nor a food critic. No, Bob Spitz is something we don’t get to review here often, a “serious” author. I say that tongue and cheek of course - for many years, food writers were looked down upon by novelists. They were lumped into a subspecies alongside sports journalists and the lady who does the advice column. Anyone who has ever read Jeffrey Steingarten knows that food writers are serious authors.

Spitz is the award-winning author of Barefoot in Babylon, Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!, and the New York Times bestseller The Beatles. He has written for virtually every important magazine and newspaper in the country. But he does not have a formal culinary background and perhaps that is what makes his tale so companionable. Because it is so much like that of every other American who has fallen victim to gastronomy.

The story begins with his personal life in shambles – the eight years of travel and research for The Beatles has cost him a marriage and his current romance is a house of cards. The only things keeping him from falling apart altogether are his love for haute cuisine and his daughter, Lily, of whom he writes:

At least my daughter gave me strength. Most nights, I still cooked for Lily, and most mornings I sent her off to school with a lunch bag full of leftovers, the most gratifying moments of my day. Only eleven years old, Lily was a chef’s ideal at the table, game for trying all my crackpot creations. She was the only kid I knew who’d attack garlicky escargots, a seared foie gras, or a dozen raw oysters with fearless relish . . .

The fervor of his burgeoning foodieness manifested itself through his regular Friday-night dinners in which friends and loved ones from the city would venture to his cozy Connecticut cottage for an evening of conversation and Epicureanism. It was at just such a party that he receded from the political debate, withdrawing inwardly to evaluate the meal, his romance, his life. The others raved about the food but he knew that he had missed the mark. He looked at his girlfriend, Carolyn, who thought of food, like so many Americans, as nothing more than fuel, a necessary evil, and realized something was missing. He then announced to the table, “I’m going to Europe, to learn how to cook.”

Over the course of three months, he traveled through France and then Italy, attending classes at a multitude of cooking schools. Some were designed to humor American tourists, at which he encountered more than one brain-dead trophy wife or wannabe Martha Stewart. Some were serious schools where lessons were not just learned but ingested.

He worked in the kitchens of everything from French culinary icons like Le Moulin de Mougins to a tiny family-run trattoria on the Amalfi Coast. He cooked side by side with the likes of Bruno Söhn, Alain Llorca, and Kate Hill. Along the way he transformed from a novice trying to impress beyond his means to a world-class cook, and as mentioned above, he learned a little something about life.

In Apprentice, Spitz manages to capture the essence of each province without sounding like a Mobil Travel Guide. Images burst off the page in full color, allowing you to clearly see the blinding speed of a chiffonade. At times you can almost feel the sensual effect garlic has on the olfactory senses when it hits a hot pan of fruity olive oil. In a word it is captivating.

I found the text most compelling whenever I sensed a change of scenery. I read with absolute anticipation for his descriptions of the legendary locals of cooking Provence, Tuscany, Paris, Naples – I saw them all through Spitz’s eyes. My only regret, why not a month in Spain or a few weeks in the Greek Isles?

On the back cover, Mark Bittman, author of How to Cook Everything, says of the Saucier’s Apprentice, “Just like Spitz: personal, clever, witty, enthralling, and lovable. Why he didn’t invite me along, I’ll never know.”

I feel like he did.

Scientology's founder, L. Ron Hubbard is definitely a well-known name. It's all over the Internet and the media. This is mostly because of Church of Scientology and celebrities like Tom Cruise. This video gives a concise but in-depth overview of many of the facets of L. Ron Hubbard's life, even before he founded the Scientology religion. Things you probably didn't even know about.

Many of us belong to several book and discussion groups, and the benefit to that is that we get to h

Many of us belong to several book and discussion groups, and the benefit to that is that we get to hear from authors and experts in a wide variety of fields. This message came to me from David Montgomery, who writes about books for several major publications. According to the message he sat in on a talk given by bestselling thriller writer Joseph Finder the topic of which was "The Six Biggest Mistakes Even Bestselling Writers Make." It’s also worth noting that when I shared this with my editor and publisher, she not only appreciated the information, she told me ½ of these are the reasons 99% of the manuscripts she receives are rejected.

MISTAKE #1: The Passive Hero
Too many thrillers have heroes who don't act; they remain passive while events take place around them.
The hero must advance the plot; s/he must take action.
The hero can't simply investigate what's going on -- he must do something about it.

MISTAKE #2: The Long Setup
The story takes too long to get moving.
Authors shouldn't just dump story on the reader; they should reveal it through action.
Too many books start with a good opening, but then slow down to a crawl.
One way to avoid this is to start the story as late as possible. If necessary, you can then go back and fill in details later on.

MISTAKE #3: The Weak Second Act
Too many books bog down in the middle, degenerating into repetitive conflict and simply regurgitating the same plot points over and over. The characters aren't progressing and changing.
The conflict of a plot must progress and escalate; the plot points must change and vary throughout the narrative.
This escalation of conflict, as well as variance of conflict, will not only keep the reader's interest, but help to develop and reveal character as well.
The introduction of subplots will also help keep the second act moving.
Whenever things start to get dull, remember: REVERSE, REVEAL, SURPRISE.
Every scene must advance the plot.

MISTAKE #4: Predictability
Authors should never underestimate their readers, most of whom have read a lot of books and seen even more movies and TV shows.
Readers know the tropes and cliches of the genre. If the story is predictable, they'll see where it's going a long way off and get bored.
The key is to surprise them. Veer off from the expected course.
If the obvious development is to take the plot in a certain direction, consider taking it in a different direction instead.
One way to avoid this trap is not to over-outline. Be spontaneous in your writing. Allow the characters and the plot to surprise you.

MISTAKE #5: The Lousy Ending
Too many books send the reader off on a sour note by finishing with a lousy ending.
A great ending is second only to a great beginning in importance.
The ending should not consist of explaining everything that happened before or tying up all the loose ends.
You should explain as little as possible; let the reader figure out the smaller details on his/her own.
Great endings off have symmetry to the beginning.
Twists can be good, but they must be earned. They must be set up earlier in the book and prepared for.
When you finish the book, get out of there ASAP. Don't draw things out.

MISTAKE #6: Showing Off
Too many writers make the mistake of: "I've done the research; I'm going to cram it all in there."
You should tell the reader the minimum they need in order to understand the plot; just the tip of the iceberg.
Pare it down, leaving only the juiciest nuggets behind.
Too much info will only slow down the story.

BONUS MISTAKE #1: Overly Explicit Dialogue
People don't narrate a story when they speak; they don't dump details and information.
People speak elliptically. Watch out for expository dialogue.

BONUS MISTAKE #2: All Plot, No People
The story won't matter if we don't care about the characters.
On its own, the plot is abstract; it requires the characters to make it real and make it matter to the reader.
Also, the stakes of the plot must matter to the characters in order for us to care as readers.

BONUS MISTAKE #3: Action Is Boring
Unlike in film where action scenes can be exciting, in books they too often are boring.
What is interesting to the reader is how the characters react to the action and how they interact with each other.
There should also be variety in your scenes; don't follow an action scene with another action scene and another action scene. Vary the pace, vary the types of scenes, slow down and speed up in order to give the reader a break and keep them interested.

BONUS MISTAKE #4: Backstory Dump
Don't make the mistake of dumping the characters' backstory on the reader all at once. It will bring your plot to a halt and bore the reader.
Reveal the backstory slowly, in pieces, as necessary.
Drop references in here and there; include mentions in dialogue; intersperse little details throughout the plot.
There is always a trade-off of CHARACTER vs. PACE.
It's importance to find the balance of revealing enough about the characters in order to make them interesting and make the reader care about them, versus the need to keep the plot moving.

I hope this list will help all of us to become better writers, regardless of the genre. I would also recommend his blog site, crimefictionblog.com.

Bei juliaL49 bin ich auf Lilly Berrys Blogparade mit dem Motto “Shakespeare oder Dan Brown? Wi

Also wenn schon Buch, dann bitte richtig!

Das wäre dann also etwa 2 Jahre her!

(rs).

Brincadeira. Vamos a algumas explicações!

Além disso, o jogo também ganhou diversos prêmios, como: Game of the Year , da Computer Gaming World, e Editors' Choice Awards, da PC Gamer.

Ernest Hemingway never knew Stephen King, but I will bet the bearded master would have enjoyed King

Ernest Hemingway never knew Stephen King, but I will bet the bearded master would have enjoyed King's gift for storytelling. And King's use of the language since both wrote gifted prose designed to involve the reader in every aspect of the story.

In King's book, On Writing, he shares insight as to why reading examples of descriptive prose is so important: "Good writing . . . teaches the learning writer about style, graceful narration, plot development, the creation of believable characters, and truth-telling. A novel like Grapes of Wrath may fill a new writer with feelings of despair and good, old-fashioned jealousy—I’ll never be able to write anything that good, not if I live to be a thousand—but such feelings can also serve as a spur, goading the writer to work harder and aim higher. Being swept away by a combination of great story and great writing . . . is a part of every writer’s necessary formation. You cannot hope to sweep someone else away by the force of your writing until it has been done to you."

Recently, I attended the American Library Association Convention with my wife Lu, a linguistics librarian at Michigan State, and heard a modern mystery writer, Stephen J. Cannell, the creator and producer of many hit television programs including "Rockford Files," and more recently the author of fifteen successful novels, describe how he reads new books in his genre to better understand how successful writers tell their story. He is a fan of both the plot-driven story, and the character-driven story, but no matter the style, Cannell stresses the importance of involving the reader from page one on through the book chapters. Otherwise, he noted, the writer loses the reader, and soon the book is abandoned without the full impact of the writer's theme unfolding.

Hemingwaywantabes, if you want to become a better writer, read what successful authors are writing whether the focus is fiction or non-fiction. Make notes, jot down ideas, and be certain to watch the flow of the story, how the characters are described, how they interact, and most important, how the writer keeps you involved in the story with such intensity that you hate to do anything but continue reading the book. Hook the reader, and then reel them in with exciting words that captivate. Doing so triggers your having written what is called a "pageturner," a book that is guaranteed to attract publisher interest.

Slot Rahsia Bisnes Mamak
27 Jun 2008
Jam 7.30 pagi
Malaysia Hari Ini, TV3

Sedikit sebanyak cerita bola sepak menjadi isi sampingan.

"Pasukan mana pilihan saudara?" soal Tuan Fitri.

"Sepanyol, 3-1," jawab Tuan Faisal yakin.

"Rekod tiga kali juara EURO, saya yakin Jerman," jawab saya.

Jawab saya, "Dalam penulisan Rahsia Bisnes Mamak kami bersama.

I taką zdradę..."

• Pertama.
