The most recent edition of the Anderson's Book Club had us reading Fannie Flagg's Can't Wait to Get to Heaven.  Unfortunately, with the ridiculousness of PA school, I didn't finish it in time (and you may have noticed the lack of reviews lately).  But although delayed, I did however finish it!  Overall, I thought it was a nice story, simple, cute, and often funny.  It is basically a "fluff" novel, nothing earth-shattering, just a relaxing summer read that would make just about anyone smile.  And while those are not the type of books I usually pick out, it was nice having a simple story while I was dealing with biochem and anatomy lectures.

The story begins with our main character, Mrs. Elner Shimfissle, at over 80 years old, climbing a ladder to pick figs from her fig tree, which she has been strictly instructed not to do by her overbearing, anxiety-ridden niece Norma.  Besides figs, Elner finds a wasp nest, and she is stung multiple times and falls off the ladder.  And so she begins quite a big journey, meeting some new people, learning some new things, and getting the answer to some of life's mysteries, such as "which came first, the chicken or the egg?".  Norma is forced to begin to see her world differently, if she is to deal with all her old aunt is throwing her way, and the entire town begins to realize what a large role Elner plays in their lives.

Hold Tight by Harlan Coben is a suspense novel exploring how much parents have the right to, and morally should, invade their childs' privacy in order to protect them.  Mike and Tia Baye are worried about their son Adam, he's completely changed since the suicide of his best friend, Spencer Hill.  Adam is withdrawn and secretive, dresses different, acts different, and has given up his life's passion - playing hockey.  Tia is concerned that Adam is into dangerous things, and she is afraid he may be contemplating suicide.  She justifies setting up a spy program on Adam's computer, arguing that Spencer's parents must wish they had done more to find out about their son's life. 

At first they come across normal teenage boy things, until Adam receives an ominous message telling him to keep quiet, and he'll be safe.  Now Tia and Mike begin to unravel the truth about what Adam has gotten himself into.  Related stories surround Adam's sister, best friend, and a teacher at school, a psychopathic murderer killing for revenge, and Spencer's mother.  For most of the book the reader does not know how all these stories will connect, but by the end they intertwine beautifully. 

Hold Tight is very suspenseful, and Coben's has a wonderful set of characters.  You can empathize with each in their own way - including the psychopath.  However, I felt like Mike and Tia were to apologetic for their spying throughout the novel.  I thought that once you make the decision to do it, right or wrong, you have to follow the path without any reservations to protect your kid.  They often hemmed and hawed over how to explain to Adam how they knew where he was, and I kept thinking that it didn't matter how they knew.  They caught him doing something bad, and that's the end of it.  He doesn't need to know where his parents got the information; he's doing something wrong.  Basically, I didn't see the moral dilemma Coben tried to present.  But, the story was fast-paced, the characters well rounded and always had some surprises, and the plot was interesting and timely.

So, what's up with the non-fiction best seller that has sold over 130,000 copies without the aid of print or TV exposure?  How could a book spend three weeks (at last count) on the New York Times best seller list without receiving any reaction?

Vincent Bugliosi's The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder (Vanguard, 26.95) is the answer to those questions.  The title is surely provocative and Bugliosi thinks that the President should be held accountable for over 4,000 American deaths in Iraq.  He lays his case out as a prosecuting attorney would.

130,000 copies is a goodly quantity of sales and the author has accomplished this without Oprah or reviews in the New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, etc.  In yesterday's Times, an editor for Newsweek was quoted saying that a reason the Bugliosi book is being ignored is that there is "Bush-bashing fatigue."   I had to howl over that rationale.  During the eight years of the Clinton presidency, the Clinton-bashing never ceased up to and including his last day in office.  The anti-Clinton books are legion and take up shelf after shelf in public libraries that inclusively collect U.S. presidential history.

So what's prompting sales of The Prosecution?  Talk radio and ads on the Internet.  Wow - another proof that different Internet communities continue to create changes in social and political life in the US of A.

Thankfully, I found something that not only works, but doesn't look like an air purifier. Disguised as a ficus tree, this purifier filters air through a five layer filter to remove smoke, pollen, dust, etc. from the air.

With all the hype surrounding this novel, especially after Joe Wright's stunning outing with its film adaptation, it could hardly go ignored for too long.  Like many hyped up events in whatever category of the entertainment media, either heightened disappointment follows upon finishing it, or you join the crowd of enthusiasts as you cut down any person that dares to suggest that it does not live up to its name.   In my case, I belong to both outcomes.  If you were to ask me of McEwan's writing prowess, you'll catch me dancing with the other sheeps, insisting that the novel is a work of a genius.  If you were to ask what I thought of the story, or of the characters, you'll see me dancing around the book's bonfire instead.

The story revolves around Briony; a clueless and sheltered child.  She is a character that mirrors that of Catherine Morland from Jane Austen's Nothanger Abbey (indeed, McEwan includes Catherine's character in the novel's epigragh).  Briony is so inexperienced in the world, as she consistently shuts herself up in her own world, her own stories, and her own imagination.  When she sees an event that involves her sister, this inexperience disables her from truly understanding, so she creates her own versions of events.  Her edition of what happens goes on to ruin the lives of her sister, and her sister's lover.  As then spends the rest of her life, trying to atone her mistake.

There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this is probably the most beautifully written book I have had the fortune to read.  He plays with language; venturing into emotions, philosophies and imagination.  His descriptions are vivid because of his unique set of similes and metaphors, along with adjectives you would not expect to be conjunctioned with certain objects and landscapes.  His exploration into a thirteen year old child's mind is extraordinary - he creates an atmospheric strangeness about her, contrasting her imaginary world and wild thoughts against the straightforward minds of the adults.

Equally, I never felt the hardship that soldiers went through in the wars until I read this book.  McEwan effortlessly depicted the pain and struggle that Robbie goes through in northern France in the most heartbreaking manner.  The true horrors of the period are brought to life by McEwan's brilliantly crafted arrangement of vocabulary.

Despite the outstanding writing, this book is incredibly hard work to get through.  It had its moments of excitement and suspense, but all in all, I found it difficult to turn the pages.  Sometimes, I felt it was, perhaps, too arty as ninety per cent of a page could be a description or taking the reader into philosophy.  I appreciated it, but personally, I wanted a story, and if all of the diversions were taken out of this book I believe it could have been a sixty paged novella.  As it is, McEwan's style is relied heavily upon to pull this story through.

I do see the fuss, but if you are after a plain good story, this is not the book to satisfy you.  Apart from the idea that a girl grows older and wiser, and tries consistently to atone for her sins, there is not much else, plot wise, going on here.  The theme is explored amicably; it's a fine exploration of guilt and forgiveness, of making mistakes and learning from them.   It wholly depends on what the reader is looking for: good writing, or a good story.  Unfortunately, the brilliant novels achieve both, and this one falls short.

Qué es bibliodiversidad?. El término busca reflejar la cantidad y heterogeneidad de títulos disponibles en un determinado país o región. Las amenazas más grandes a esa bibliodiversidad son: la consolidación tanto de editoriales como de librerias con la consiguiente priorización de los resultados financieros y la "best-sellerización" de los fondos editoriales que generalmente implica una reducción en la calidad literaria y de contenido de un libro.

Muchos pueden argumentar que en Bolivia estas amenazas a la bibliodiversidad, no son tan fuertes, al final, no hemos experimentado una consolidación en el sector y aparentemente las editoriales bolivianas aún buscan un fondo más horizontal que vertical.

Podemos también comentar algunas estadísticas: Bolivia produce cerca de 1500 - 1800 títulos nuevos por año y el ISBN registra 39 nuevos editores por año, lo que refleja la creciente producción bibliográfica en Bolivia. La producción boliviana ha empezado a diversificarse ya que luego de años de centrarse principalmente en el ensayo social y político, en los últimos años hemos visto una explosión de nuevos títulos en poesía, novela, cuento y textos escolares y universitarios. Una visita rápida a cualquier libreria en el país evidenciará una mayor presencia de la producción bibliográfica nacional.

Entonces la bibliodiversidad está asegurada en el país?. Lastimosamente la respuesta es: no.

Si bien hay una mayor producción nacional, poco a poco estamos recibiendo menos diversidad de títulos del exterior. Afectados por la pirateria, los importadores bolivianos estamos empezando a centrar nuestras esperanzas en traer la última novela o libros de cocina, autoayuda, etc. y esperar que no sean pirateados antes de que se vendan todos los ejemplares importados. Libros de autores menos conocidos, o temáticas menos amplias, poco a poco empiezan a ser sacrificados por estos libros de mayor rotación.

Y los best-sellers internacionales?. Dado que son los primeros libros pirateados, los best-sellers practicamente han desaparecido de las librerías porque el riesgo de quedarse con saldo de ejemplares no vendidos es cada vez más alto. El resultado es importaciones con menos ejemplares y menos títulos, y precios más altos, ya que al final son los bestsellers los que "financian" al librero (o al editor) para ofrecer libros menos "famosos". Si a esto le agregamos que el mercado del libro en Bolivia es muy sensible al precios, la amenaza a la bibliodiversidad es aún mayor ya que debemos esperar que salga una edición en bolsillo (normalmente luego de 1 año o más de haber salido el libro) para que el libro sea accesible para el público boliviano.

En definitiva, el escenario actual es uno en el que el país produce más libros (por supuesto solo para consumo interno), pero importa menos títulos del exterior lo que nos aisla del conocimiento generado fuera de nuestras fronteras. Si la tendencia no se revierte, podemos enfrentarnos a un escenario similar al de la música, en el que el público en general solo tiene acceso al Top Ten y aquellos que buscan más variedad y no tienen los recursos necesarios (técnicos y monetarios) deben batírselas por si solos y quedan necesariamente insatisfechos.

6. Ice Cream! Nothing compares to the taste of homemade vanilla ice cream in the summer. It doesn't matter if you make it yourself or buy it, all that matters is that you get an extra scoop with sprinkles.

5. Keep Cool: Ceiling fans, outdoor fans, dehumidifiers - whatever works for you, be sure it's working and on-hand when the hot days of summer creep in.

4. Curbside Lemonade Stand: OK, so this one only works if you're a child (although we'd love to see photos of some grownups with a lemonade stand if you decide to try it out!).

3. An Evening Boat Ride: Whether you have a friend with a yacht (we wish!) or if you rent a row boat to go out and watch the sun set, be sure you enjoy a relaxing evening out on the lake at least once this summer.

2. Read! It doesn't matter if it's The Odyssey or the latest issue of People magazine - as long as you read something. Of course poolside or beach reading is our favorite, but even just taking a book out and reading on the front porch, balcony or deck is much more relaxing than an hour of re-runs on TV.
