Offense

Boston is just better here, without question. They scored a ton more runs, even without Manny Ramirez in the lineup. The Rays will have to rely on the long ball in addition to pitching and defense if they want to outscore Boston in this series. Both teams run the bases well, and have stolen a lot of bases off each other this year, so good baserunning and avoiding big mistakes is a must. Even with the injuries, the Sox have slightly better positional depth on the bench too.

Rotation

If Josh Beckett is healthy, the advantage goes to the Red Sox here. With Jon Lester pitching the way he has, who can compete with two playoff-tested aces? But if Beckett is not right, I have to say that the Rays have ever so slight an advantage here. Playoff experience be damned, James Shields, Matt Garza, Scott Kazmir and Andy Sonnanstine is a good short series rotation. Garza will have to throw strikes under pressure, and Sonnanstine will have to keep the ball down, but this bunch can prevent a lot of runs.

Bullpen

Both bullpens are well above average, but for different reasons. The Sox employ Jonathan Papelbon, Hideki Okajima, and Justin Masterson primarily as 8th and 9th inning guys, with Manny Delcarmen and Masterson sharing 7th inning duties. The Rays have a lot of live arms, most notably Grant Balfour, J.P. Howell and David Price in middle relief. Dan Wheeler is a solid, if unspectacular closer. The way the bullpens perform will depend a lot on how deep the Sox starters can go. If Beckett is not himself, they could be in trouble in this series. If Boston gets six innings out of Daisuke Matsuzaka and seven from Lester and Beckett, Tampa Bay will be the one in trouble. Patrick Sullivan raises an interesting point about skill distribution on these two teams.

Defense

Lots of writers are giving the Rays the advantage here, but I just don't buy it. The Red Sox defense is every bit as good, and better by some measures (such as BP's park-adjusted defensive efficiency). The reason you don't hear about the Sox defense is because the Rays' good defense is new, and been a big key to their success this season. Boston's excellent defense is in a post-hype period, but all you have to do is look at this year's ALDS to be impressed. Given the absence of Mike Lowell, I'm willing to call this one even.

Overall

I am really looking forward to this series, because it truly does pit the two best teams from the AL this season against each other. They pitch well, play good defense and overall play the game right. Get ready for some nail-biting, electric baseball. I expect this series to go out to 6 or 7 games, and I do think the Red Sox are in the driver's seat (barely), though it could fall either way based on a few key plays.

I should mention that I think the Rays overachieved some this year, and I don't see them being quite as good in 2009. They can't count on Dioner Navarro hitting .295 every year or 20 HR from Eric Hinske or their 4th and 5th starters to be league average. They'll still be good, but just not 97 wins good.

Three catchers is slightly risky, considering the depleted infield/outfield depth, but having Wakefield on the roster means Cash must be there. Lowrie can play over at third in the case of an injury to Kotsay or Youkilis, and in a real pinch, Cash can play at third. Kotsay is, of course, a superb outfielder too, in case we need someone out there.

• The suicide squeeze cost Los Angeles game 4. They had seized the momentum, and had speedy Reggie Willits on third base with one out. That's almost a guaranteed run, yet they tried this squeeze bunt anyway. The demoralized fans went wild on this one, and it gave the Sox back their confidence. Scioscia totally overthought this one. I don't think it's a fireable offense, but it was a bad, bad call.
• The Red Sox defense was simply awesome in this one, while the Angels' seemed uninspired. Mark Kotsay made an incredible back-handed, running grab on a flare over first base and a great sliding grab in foul territory for another key out, making use of all of his outfielder skills; Dustin Pedroia had a great barehanded grab to foil a rally. On the flip side, Erick Aybar missed a fieldable grounder at short, Chone Figgins made a throwing error to second base and Willits dove headlong at a ball which he should have stopped for a single, that went for a double. Jason Bay would go on to score the game-winner from second base.
• Justin Masterson became tentative after coming into the game. Even this steely rookie's nerves were shaken at the thought of this being the ALDS clincher. His stride, arm speed and mechanics weren't very aggressive a few pitches in, and it showed in the results. He did make a great pitch to Vladimir Guerrero, however, which should be noted.
• Jed Lowrie hung in there and eked out the walkoff single, but Lester and Bay should get the credit for this victory.

A few points to take away from this Series:

Jon Lester was not just good, but awesome. One unearned run in this series, and it wasn't just luck. He's regained all of his weight and strength back, and he is pounding that fastball in there at 95-96 mph with regularity. How many lefties can you name who can do that and mix in a sharp 76 mph curve and good changeup? Everyone says, oh, the Angels didn't hit. Well, Lester was the biggest reason why they couldn't.

Having J.D. Drew play also provided a huge boost offensively and defensively for us. I say this because  with Mike Lowell being deactivated, Kevin Youkilis will continue play at third, and first base will be manned by some combination of Mark Kotsay and Sean Casey. If Drew is not healthy, that leaves us very thin on reserves. Rosterwise, the Sox would have picked up an extra reliever anyway for this 7-game series, but I'd rather have Lowell on the roster than Gil Velazquez (no offense).

I like what I saw from the bullpen this series. They will be well-rested and ready to go against the Rays, and we'll need them. The Sox made the plays when it counted, but this series was much closer than it looked. I suspect with Lowell out that the ALCS will also be REALLY close and come down to pitching and defense. Whichever team executes to their best ability will come out on top. Preview to come soon!

The Central Eastside Industrial District (CEID) is sparse on greenspace or even places to it outside in the (occasional) sun and eat lunch.  There is the Eastbank Esplanade which is great for walking or sitting eye to eye with a kayaker, and we can see Waterfront Park.  If one is willing to trek east a bit, there is Colonel Summers Park.  But there is no place really nearby to just take a 10 minute break outside.

So I was very pleasantly surprised when I walked by the former duck blind the other day and saw the great space they had created.  There are coffee carts all over Portland, and a very few even have chairs or a bench, but this is the first time I have seen a coffee cart create a restful space.

I can't say whether the motivation of the coffee cart owner was to entice customers away from the numerous cafes in the 'hood, or just to create a visual break from Grand Street traffic and a parking lot.  To be honest, I don't really care.  I just appreciate that we now have a nice little peaceful space just a block away.

I know that their space is not public the way that the others are, but in some ways that makes it a better example for the local business community.  Portland Parks & Recreation is in the business of greenspaces.  Coffee carts are in the business of selling coffee.  But the folks who own this cart saw the business value in merging the two, and as their neighbor, I really appreciate the effort.

Time can treat us harshly as we grow old but we still see the beauty that surrounds us…

Napadaan ako sa bench para tumingin ng tsinelas na pambahay. Pero di pa man ako nakakapasok ay nakita ko na ang isang bundok ng sale na brip na 2 for P100. Syet, lulunukin ko ba ang pride ko at makikikawkaw ako sa paghahanap ng 'perfect pair'? Bahala na.

Nagsimula ako tumingin sa isang bundok ng puting briefs. Lahat small, at wala na sa packaging nila. Naisip ko bigla yung mga nakaraang underwear shows nila at baka yun pa yung mga pinagsusuot ng mga models. Agad kong binitiwan ang mga hawak ko na at lumipat na lang dun sa mga hindi na 2 for P100 pero nakapack pa rin. Buti na lang at mura pa rin naman sila. Nagkukuha ako ng marami hanggang sa mukha na akong milyonaryo sa mga brips na hawak ko. Dumiretso na ako sa counter at napagastos ng halos P1,000 sa mga sale na briefs. Hindi ko masyadong hilig ang masidenyong klase pero kinuha ko na rin dahil size ko naman.

He handled projects like school housings, palm jumeira's landscaping (man-made island) and the likes.

Since fourth year high school, I always have my haircut in Bench Fix in SM San Lazaro. Earlier today, I went there to have my haircut and I found out that there is something commendable. Usually, one stylist would attend to two customers at the same time. Nakakainis 'di ba? Pero ngayon, 'di na! From what I see, the number of stylist is tripled including the crews who shampoo's and blow dry your hair.

Congrats Nokia!

Nokia launched its new phone today. Nokia's long-awaited touchscreen phone is unlikely to give Apple CEO Steve Jobs any sleepless nights. Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic, also known as the Nokia Tube, comes with unlimited access to Nokia's music service. And yes, it bears a strong resemblance to the iPhone. But like T-Mobile's Android-based G1, the 5800 is just the first volley in a larger strategy. The touchscreen phone will be among the first devices from Nokia's stable to support Comes with Music, a Nokia service that offers one year of unlimited access to the company's music store catalog.

Boo Catholic Church!

I'm not an atheist. I'm a Catholic. I'm just very annoyed by the way they are announcing their stand (anti) regarding the Reproductive Health Bill. "The bill allows abortion to be legal." I don't think so. "It also legalizes the use of contraceptives which is very contrary to God's given life to us. "He used the Holy Spirit to give us life, only He through the Holy Spirit can take it away from us." Contraceptives are making us safe, I think. We are on the 21^st century na, c'mon! Can we move on? They are also persuading church goers to sign a petition against the Reproductive Health Bill. Is this what we call the Separation of State and Church? Or the intervention of the church in state matters? Or is this divine intervention? I beg to differ.

Boo SM San Lazaro!

Upon entering the mall I thought I've mistaken SM from Divisoria. I always hate sales. Lalo na yung mga 3 day sales dahil madami talaga ang tao. There are too much people inside that you will expect the mall to collapse on an instance. Few people are buying. Most of the people inside are just roaming around. Dapat may entrance fee eh! I just wish Bonifacio High Street, Powerplant and Galleria are not ocean's away from our home.

We decided to shoot @ Prince's Island Park.  I thought that was where Ben proposed, but it was the start of an evening that eventually led to the proposal!

They said they were up for anything, so i made them dance!

Can you see Pam clutching a stuffed monkey?  They brought Benny-Bear-Monkey which was given to Pam by Ben so that he could keep her company while he moves down to Houston first.  Sweet huh?

I told them to lie down on the grass...they were most compliant, even though their bottoms were getting really damp from the am dew!

Good timing on the proposal, the fall colors were totally in our favor.

It was getting a little breezy so leaves were snowing everywhere.  We also got our 2nd shooter to shake up the trees a bit!

The afternoon sun was getting a little glaring so we decided to take a break and head out to Inglewood.  Costume change!  Loved Pam's sweater. =)

Our 2nd shooter was also the fashion consultant and put together Ben's outfit.

Inglewood has lots of character...a bit of urban decay if you will.

At this point Ben and Pam were naturally posing themselves - which i love.  The couple in their own element!

While i got pooped on by a pigeon and had to beg the diner to let me use their bathroom to clean up, Ben and Pam were still hard at work outside the diner...

And after four hours of fun, this was the last shot of the day - grande finale!   I spoke with Pam the next day and found out modeling is hard work, she most deservingly zonked out the rest of the afternoon.  Congrats you two, it was a privilege to photograph you.  We'll miss you when you're down in Houston - all the best!

Mike Lowell is not doing well after playing in the opener, but it appears that J.D. Drew will continue to play. Look for Kevin Youkilis to man third and Sean Casey or Mark Kotsay to play first.

My feeling is that the Sox come back here tied at 1-1, but there is a lot of pressure on Ervin Santana right now. Game 2 is a must-win for them, and Los Angeles has that 10 straight postseason game loss record on the line. If he cracks, the Angels might just cough up Game 3 without a fight.

I won't give a full treatment here, since there are already so many excellent previews out there. Here are a few of my favorites:

If you're looking for reasons to be optimistic as a Red Sox fan, there are a few over at The Hardball Times.

Baseball Think Factory's got a good summary paragraph or two.

As for my thoughts: If we had a healthy Sox team, I'd say we win in 4. You can't ignore the best run differential in baseball (by a big margin). But there are other factors. The latest I have heard is that J.D. Drew feels "100% ready" to go, while Mike Lowell can hit but is still hobbling a bit in the field. Add in Josh Beckett's oblique strain and pitching just once in the 5-game series, and suddenly things aren't so clear any more. The health of these three is critical to the outcome of this series.

Make no mistake, these are two very good teams and pretty evenly matched. Yes, I know the Halos owned the season series, and the Sox have owned the recent postseason historically, but I fully expect it will go the full 5 games this time around. As it so often does in October, I believe this series will come down to who pitches better and plays defense better.

Rotation

Ervin Santana is the best single pitcher in this series (this season), edging out Jon Lester. However, Lester is matched up against John Lackey, not Santana. A healthy Beckett is better than Lackey, but I will call them even because of the oblique strain. That will take some velocity off, and likely force Beckett to go to his secondary pitches more. Daisuke Matsuzaka, for all his wildness, is a good deal better than Joe Saunders, who benefited from a very low .266 BABIP against this season. I know Dice-K's BABIP against is .258, but his stuff is better, and he's more proven. Saunder's true ERA should be something closer to 4.46, while Matsuzaka's is more like 4.17. If Beckett can get through this strain, and if Dice-K delivers, the Sox have a great shot at taking this ALDS.

Bullpen

The Angels have an impressive collection of talent here in Francisco Rodriguez, Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo. I am not impressed by at all by Darren Oliver, despite his career year. You might give the Halos the edge here, but they are overrated. Remember that they play in a pitcher-friendly home park, plus there are cracks in this bullpen. Rodriguez is walk prone, and has proved vulnerable against Boston lately. Arredondo is a rookie, and we'll see how he responds to the pressure of October. The Sox answer with Jonathan Papelbon, Hideki Okajima, Justin Masterson and Manny Delcarmen. I don't worry about Paps at all; he's gotten knocked about lately because he was relying on his fastball and it was publicized. That was primarily to save his arm for the playoffs. Now that we're in October, you're gonna see more slutters and chageups from him, plus a harder fastball. I guarantee it. I put Javier Lopez in the same class as Oliver. The slightest of edges to the Angels.

Lineups

The Sox would have the clear advantage here if not for injuries. People are talking about Big Papi's down year and Manny Ramirez being gone, but they forget that even with all the injuries, this lineup was 2nd in the AL in runs, and 3rd in all of baseball. And that wasn't all before the trade, either. They were 2nd overall in August and 7th in September (tied with the Angels without both Drew AND Lowell). Don't underestimate this lineup, and remember that they can match up with the Angels' speed. I'd say the Sox have improved a lot on the bases by replacing Manny with Jason Bay. The Sox have a deeper bench as well, so that helps lessen the impact if Lowell and/or Drew can't go. Slight edge to the Sox here.

Quando comecei a pesquisar as morsas para escolher a minha, saquei de cara porque a morsa fixa tinha esse nome, mas confesso que precisei perguntar qual a diferença entre uma morsa giratória e uma rotativa. Também tinha dúvidas sobre gastar pouco, ou um pouco mais. Fiquei no meio termo, nada abaixo dos 200 e nada acima dos 300, apesar de me coçar por algumas de até 1000 pilas. Boas morsas de atado possuem muitas partes móveis, a maneira como são construídas e o material utilizado fará a diferença depois de alguns meses de uso, se esse conjunto não for bom, a sua morsa logo apresentará folgas nas junções entre as partes e isso vai te gerar problemas.

Nela a JAW ficará sempre na mesa posição. Prendemos o anzol e ele fica fixo na mesma posição. Não dá pra girar nada pra lado algum. Simples e eficiente no que tange atar uma mosca, mas privada de demais confortos.

Permite girar a JAW e consequentemente o anzol prezo a ela. Isso facilita o trabalho de “enrolar” dubbing, penas, fios e tantas outras coisas que se enrola no anzol para se fazer moscas. Não em todos, mas em muitos casos é mais fácil e eficiente girar o anzol e manter o material de atado parado que o contrário. Um exemplo? O chenille vem em fios longos e às vezes soltos. Enrolar o chenille no anzol é sacal, se você não cortá-lo. Com a morsa giratória você gira o anzol e não o chenille. Isso funciona com muitas coisas.

Ainda visualizando a situação anterior, imagine que se você trocar o anzol a haste dele não vai girar no mesmo eixo em todos os tamanhos e tipos. Aí que entra uma sutil regulagem no suporte da JAW que permite ajustar a sua posição de maneira que o novo anzol gire com a haste num eixo fixo.

Um preciosismo para os menos exigentes, mas quando você vai comprar uma morsa de atado, não se deveria economizar 30 pilas nesse item.

Alguns modelos são vendidos com C-Clamp e base, outros só com um ou outro, a escolher. A minha veio sem nenhum dos 2, mas a coluna pode ter 2 tamanhos, para uso com um ou outro. Eu uso a minha própria base para morsa que também é estação de atado, que eu mesmo fiz na marcenaria do Sr. Adão.

Existem ainda uma série de assessórios para as morsas, como o porta bobbing e parachutes entre outras, não vou esgotar o assunto. How easy is it for us not to take time for the people that matter to us in life? And not to mention the other people around us, who we'd sooner not matter to us?

I had this hit home to me this morning!! Lying in bed, listening to the Christian radio station, I heard a message about how relationships matter.

At one time, someone had asked Jesus what was the most important thing to God. He said...

“Which is the first commandment of all?”
Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
"And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:28-31, NKJ)

So our relationship with God, and our relationship with others, go together. Our love for God is seen in our love for one another.

"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God." (1 John 4:7, NKJ)
