Well Congratulations to Pragyan on his India selection, afterall it reads better than a desperate measure of roping in a Murli Kartik from the commentary box!

The Asia cup showed the Indian team suffered from a dearth of spinners in the absence of Harbhajan Singh.

Somehow the options seemed limited!!!! However this is not the case as far as the talent pool of Indian spinners is concerned, though the selection option is limited because of the ICL ban; coz it was the ICL that opened the avenue for spinners in the T20 format of the game.

One spinner at ICL who has been in the spotlight has been Ali Murtaza, the young 20 yr old spinner who has been continuously spinning the web around the best of batsmen in the world. He has come in for special mention from players of the stature of Marvan Atapattu & Inzamam Ul Haq who have spoken volumes on the humongous talent the young Delhi Giants spinner possesses.

However this prodigal talent and his talent is not exploited by cricket India because of the BCCI’s draconian diktat.

The best recommendation for Murtaza came from the legendary Erapalli Prasanna; according to whom if Ali can perform in the spinners graveyard called T20 cricket ,then he is absolutely ready for the 50 over format and Test in the years to come.

On pure merit and a level playing field the fact that Murtaza get the nod ahead of Ojha is anybody’s guess!

India will play 3 Tests and 5 ODIs against Sri Lanka in a one-month tour that commences with a tour-

India will play 3 Tests and 5 ODIs against Sri Lanka in a one-month tour that commences with a tour-game on July 18th.

The 16-member India Team for the tour has been announced.

The major surprise is that Virender Sehwag is vice-captain of the Test team!

After his comments on the idiocy of back-to-back games in the Asia Cup and after his comment that he was "running on reserve", not unexpectedly, M. S. Dhoni, Team India Test vice-captain, has opted out of the Tests citing fatigue. Dhoni has been playing almost non-stop since India's tour of England last year this time! He played in a long and arduous 80-day tour of England that commenced in June last year. This was immediately followed by the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in which he captained Team India for the first time. He barely recovered from the celebrations that irked poor Andrew Symonds so much before he played the ill-tempered ODI series against Australia as captain of the ODI team! This was immediately followed by a Test and ODI series against Pakistan in India. Even before the Pakistan team had left Indian shores, Dhoni and his men were off on a fraught and testy two-month tour of Australia. The tour included 4 Tests and too many banal ODIs. This was immediately followed by a Test series against South Africa. We hardly had time to draw a collective breath with the IPL hit all metros in India! This was followed by a meaningless ODI tri-series in Bangladesh and then, the Asia Cup! This is a tremendous workload by any stretch of the imagination.

When Dhoni talked about the idiocy of back-to-back matches, the BCCI -- always trigger-happy at the best of times -- jumped up and down in unison and snorted that "any tired player should inform the Board". Dhoni did and made himself unavailable for Sri Lanka.

The break would do him good. It would certainly save him from a burn-out situation.

While this may dent India's chances in the Tests, it certainly provides an opportunity for Dinesh Karthik to step up to the plate. Interestingly, Parthiv Patel is Karthik's deputy!

Apart from that forced change, there were a few smart inclusions, a few smart exclusions and one or two surprises!

Rohit Sharma comes in for Yuvraj Singh. I do think that that is a smart move. Yuvraj Singh, one feels, must regain his mojo. And a good place to start would be to get his dodgy knee fixed. It is, one feels, affecting his confidence. One rarely sees him diving around on the park these days. A fully fit Yuvraj Singh is also a confident Yuvraj Singh.

Irfan Pathan has also been axed. Once again, I think this is a good move. It may be better for him to head back to the MRF Pace Foundation for running repairs when he feels that he may be losing form and shape than when it has already fallen apart at the seams.

A surprise inclusion was Pragyan Ojha, in my view. Dilip Vengsarkar has always retained his fascination for left-arm spinners and has bemoaned the lack of quality left-armers in India. This may be an attempt to get Ojha into the frame in a major way. While I do like the look of Ojha, I am not sure he will play. So he may end up being a passenger on this tour. The experience will do him good though.

And finally, after a string of stirring performances in ODIs, Gautam Gambhir gets the nod ahead of Wasim Jaffer who, one felt, messed up one chance too many!

The one gripe I have is over the selection of Munaf Patel. I am not really sure what he has done to deserve this selection. Maybe he has shown signs of improved fitness. In any case, unless Zaheer Khan breaks down mid-tour (always a likely scenario) I do not see Munaf Patel do much else other than carry drinks and towels.

Overall, I do feel that this is a good selection effort. The team (in possible batting order) is:

Virender Sehwag (Vice-captain)
Gautam Gambhir
Rahul Dravid
Sachin Tendulkar
Sourav Ganguly / Rohit Sharma
Vangipurappu Laxman
Dinesh Karthik ('keeper) / Parthiv Patel ('keeper)
Anil Kumble (captain)
Harbhajan Singh / Pragyan Ojha
Zaheer Khan / R. P. Singh
Ishant Sharma / Munaf Patel

It is good to see India go on a tour with 16 players.

If India want to include an extra bowler option -- an option that may well be necessary -- Gambhir would have to make way for Karthik at the top of the order.

I dont know what Indians think about their captain's on-field behavior in the second last match of the super 4 stage in the Asia CUP. Towards the end of Srilankan inning Tilan Thushara was given RUNOUT by the 3rd umpire when the video replays clearly showed Dhoni messed up with the runout. The important question is whether Dhoni knew what happened ? and if so, what does this say about Indian captain's spirit of the game ? this situation can be compared with the recent Sidebottom controversy in England. Another aspect to this incident in the Asia cup is that whether Dhoni really appealed for the runout ? or can the umpire refer the decision to the 3rd umpire without the appeal from the fielding team ? well, I dont think that can happen. In any case, Dhoni's silence really dont go good with the spirit of the game.

what is with Yuvraj singh's bat ? It is very clear that something is special [or wrong] . He seems to drive, cut, pull, smash, and guide with lot of ease. Many, including the great paksitan bowler Wasim Akram's eyebrow was raised. Authorities [ICC or BCCI or MCC] should look into it. No batsman should have any kind of added advantage with his bat or any other kind of sport kit. Authorities [ICC or BCCI or MCC] should also consider bringing in a universal standard in the case of bats thereby ending dominance of some bat makers. Yuvraj singh's bat if found violating any law should be banned like Ricky Ponting's graphite-claded bat.

Getting burnt out or getting bored watching Cricket is not at all the traits that define me. But the

Getting burnt out or getting bored watching Cricket is not at all the traits that define me. But then these days, the Indian Team has played a lot of games, add to it the IPL, to have burnt out themselves. I'm still wondering why so much has been spoken about MSD trying to put it forth to the board. They should rather take it in a proper sense and look to do whatever it takes to prevent players from getting injured.

Of all the nations, the Indians are known to have the tighest schedule. I understand that they bring in a lot of market value where ever they play. But then you should also know that even they are humans. There's no point simply blaming them for complaining about a tight schedule. All Dhoni did was, as a Captain of the team, represented the team and put forth their thoughts. It was BCCI who wanted the players to sign the contract for the IPL and I saw one of the officials asking why the players didn't complain when the IPL was going on.

Obviously cash is one issue. But then, in this case, they were complaining about playing two back to back International Match. I don't see anything wrong with the players here. The Board should have had the common sense to think of all this and should have charted a better schedule. Moreover I also feel that this is a nice time to build a pool of around 20 - 25 players and implement the rotation policy which I see as the only available solution. There is a world of opportuinity to try this out. It will help is in long term and will also groom the players for the future. Just imagine this. Take Gambhir and Sehwag for example. Both have been going great guns. What if both are injured? Is that what the board wants? It will also hamper their flow specially when their career graphs are hitting a purple patch.

Even I took a break for almost a month now with all that I've been writing and I needed a break to get my thoughts back together. When this happens to me, just think of the players specially the quicks. Wake up BCCI and make sure that you don't land up ending blooming careers pre-maturely. Instead of whining about players not coming forward and requesting to be dropped as they need a break, you guys provide the necessary pool to help them out. Its basic common sense and even Sachin Tendulkar for this matter won't come forward to ask him let him off to have a break just because he wants one. He was injured and hence needed to stay away. Get that properly guys. He's not resting, he's recovering rather. No guesses why the Coach Gary Kirsten supported the Captain on this issue.

Also note this thing guys. There are so many other teams to play with other than Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

I am tired of the question “Where were you on June 25th 1983?”… it was a day when

I am tired of the question "Where were you on June 25th 1983?"... it was a day when India won its one and only world cup. 25 years later we are still celebrating it. Dont get me wrong.. I think it was a great victory.. but its getting a bit tiresome... In the meantime Australia has won 3. The BCCI keeps milking this event...

So I take you to the future.. June 25 2033...

India is celebrating the 50th year of its winning its one and only world cup. Octogenerian Sunil Gavaskar can still play with the young turks and said he wished another Indian team would win the world cup soon. He was tired of going to the same old felicitation ceremony over and over and over again.

Former India captain M.S Dhoni regretted that the Indian team could not win the 50 over world cup. They had won every other title 20/20, 10/10, 5/5, and the One over dhamaka (1/1). He hoped Dhoni Jr would have better luck.

Modi the commissioner of the IPL and the newly formed under 10 league said that there was a lot of talent in India. He cited the 1 year old prodigy Babloo. "We have the talent. We just have to win" he said.

Kapil who leads the rebel tiny tots league said that he still feels proud that he was the only captain to lead india to a world cup win. "There is no answer to me (Kapil kaa Jawab Nahin)" he said. He said "I always have a feeling ki that we will win every tournaement we that play in.. but we are not giving the 100% effort like my boys in 1983".

190 year old Lele who was the BCCI Secy when India won the world cup said that he would definitely be around when the guys won the world cup the next time.

Kirmani still felt that India was not winning because none of the Wicketkeepers came to him for advise.

Rajdeep Sardesai the veteran's veteran of news anchor wondered if reservations introduced in the team had affected our perfomances. "After all a 30% reservation for upper castes sends the wrong signals" he said.
Kris Srkkkant the Brand Ambassador for the "Chennai Sooper Children" (under 10 league) said "WellIdontthinkreservationsarebad.... therearenobadreservationsonlybadreservers..gasp..gasp".

Mohinder Amarnath was still on his way to the function...he was looking for that red hanky...

All players were sure that they will be back in 2083 for the 100th Anniversary celebrations of India winning the world cup.

Who's the top earner among Indian sportspersons? For almost two decades, that's been a no-brainer. Sachin Tendulkar, beloved icon of a nation, first choice of corporates seeking celebrity endorsers, has consistently topped the charts. But that now seems to have changed - and how. ( Watch )

Sources within the sports management industry claim Indian One-day and Twenty20 skipper MS Dhoni is expected to earn up to Rs 50 crore this year. In comparison, Tendulkar will be making around Rs 35 crore.

Both Dhoni and Tendulkar reportedly charge around the same amount for ads. "Their price tags can go up to Rs 4 crore each for every endorsement they sign," a source close to both said. But Dhoni is said to have pulled ahead of the master blaster in terms of the number of brands endorsed.

Just two years ago, when Dhoni was a new kid on the block, he used to charge between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 40 lakh per endorsement. But the rapid increase in his stature - fuelled by India's historic victories in the T20 World Cup and the Australian tri-series, and Chennai Super Kings' march to the IPL final under his leadership - has seen his asking price going up sharply.

It's a price that advertisers are more than happy to pay. "Dhoni is a big brand today and a lot of representatives from India Inc are showing interest in associating with him," said Dhoni's agent, Jeet Banerjee. Specifically asked about Dhoni's exact earnings, Banerjee declined to cite a figure.

Sandip Tarcas of Future Group, which recently signed Dhoni as an endorser and has also been associated with Sachin, said: "Brand Dhoni is 10 times bigger than he used to be, but to us Tendulkar is an icon and they both have mass connectivity."

Interestingly, Dhoni fetched the highest tag during the Indian Premier League auctions when the Chennai Super Kings bid $1.5 million (around Rs 6 crore) for him. Tendulkar was not part of the auction, since as an 'icon', he was guaranteed 15% more than the highest bid for a Mumbai Indians player.

He finally wound up with around Rs 4 crore, though there was heated debate between fans on whether he would have fetched a higher sum than Dhoni if he had been available for bidding.

Among the other big earners, Rahul Dravid is projected to have an annual income of Rs 25 crore despite recent fluctuations in fortune. Yuvraj Singh follows with Rs 18 crore. But the big earner of the future is likely to be Ishant Sharma - fitness and form willing. Sharma and Virender Sehwag both make about Rs 10 crore each. But the growing popularity of the 19-year old sensation is likely to catapult him into the Rs 15-crore bracket from next year.

Do read this article (click here). An excerpt....

The BCCI did its best not to commemorate the silver jubilee of the World Cup victory because the drama of such a commemoration would have been hard to carry off without giving the winning team's skipper a speaking role. Finally, when Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev both made it clear that the celebrations would go on with or without the Indian cricket establishment, the board was shamed into agreeing to participate, since it didn't want to come across as a bunch of vindictive little men.

The most revealing aspect of the BCCI's vendetta against the ICL's recruits was its decision to cut off the pensions awarded to ex-cricketers for their services to first-class and international cricket. Kapil Dev can probably afford to do without an annuity, but that isn't the point. If these pensions were granted in recognition of past service, to cut them off on account of contemporary quarrels is a monstrous thing to do. The revocation of the pension is both material punishment and metaphorical erasure: it's like saying, "We, the board, have decided that your career, your service to cricket, your achievements, count for nothing in themselves unless they're recognised by Us, because it is Our recognition that legitimises your past and your present, that makes it visible."

Need to write about it. Need to speak about it. We all need to speak, need to write about it. This is just not done....

According to an ABC story, here, Saudi national Gaith Pharaon just got a shiny new $80 million dollar contract from the US military. Only trouble is, he's been indicted by the Justice Department and the French want him for allegedly working in a ring of banks that fund terrorists like al Qaeda. Oh yeah, nearly forgot, he has long standing business and personal ties to George W. Bush.

Mr. Pharaon is doing his part in "the war terror". His company, Attock Refinery Ltd, just received a hefty contract to provide jet fuel US bases in Afghanistan. But this is not the first time Mr. Pharaons name has come up to the national spotlight.

He was identified by the Federal Reserve Board as being the frontman for BCCI, Harken Energy, and Cen Trust when those scandals broke. You will recall the Harken Energy investigation that tried to figure out if George W. Bush was guilty of insider trading as he just happened to sell off all of his stocks right before the company went belly up and the company had to admit it had been cooking the books.

"BCCIbecame the focus in 1991 of the world's worst financial scandal and what was called a "$20-billion-plus heist".[3] It was found by regulators in the United States and the United Kingdom to be involved in money laundering, bribery, support of terrorism,[4] arms trafficking, the sale of nuclear technologies,..." Wiki.

But it was his Cen Trust and BCCI involvement that made him famous.

He's wanted by the FBI for his involvement in those scandals. You will remember that the Cen Trust debacle cost the US taxpayers $1.7 billion and landed the president of the company in jail for 10 years.

But apparently, they didn't get to old Gaith. Why?

Gaith also invested in a little company awhile back called Arbusto (little Bush) it was another George Bush start-up in the oil business. George ran that one into the ground as well but he made some interesting friends while doing it.

But not Gaith. You see, he knew Gaith already. They were classmates and friends from Harvard Business School. You see, George went to Harvard after signing up for the Air National Guard, and he was released to go to Harvard 8 months early before he was called up to go to Vietnam.

And there he met Gaith. Funny how small the world is sometimes.

Now Gaith is also currently wantedby the French for allegedly being involved in a money laundering scandal that involves some hefty Saudi names. In this endeavour it seems that Gaith played a role in funneling money to terrorist groups.

"A 70-page French intelligence report claims: "The financial network of bin Laden, as well as his network of investments, is similar to the network put in place in the 1980s by BCCI for its fraudulent operations, often with the same people (former directors and cadres of the bank and its affiliates, arms merchants, oil merchants, Saudi investors)."

And now he gets big time contracts to help fight "the war on terror". Curious ain't it? How the Army gave a contract to a known terrorist financier who was currently wanted by the FBI at the time. I suppose it's all in who you know, huh?

How's Gaith doing? The guy who stole from the US, and billions from the world in general, and helped fund terrorist organizations? How's he doing?

Looks like he's doing just fine. Enjoy that $80 million dollar contract, Gaith. You earned it.

It’s now been a week since IPL. For those of you who completely missed out on it (do email me on how that was possible), it stands for Indian Premier League. Or rather India’s Powerful Lobby. After all, BCCI did manage to get all cricket playing countries to participate – Cricket Australia gave in eventually, the English Cricket Board too is succumbing to it!!

Everything that had to be said about it has been said. But not by everyone. I had refined from commenting on it during the tournament – partly because I was too engrossed watching it – so I shall state it now.

It is said that societal behavioral habits take years to change. I defer on that statement. These are the societal changes I have observed take place in our country in flat 45 days!!

TV Remote is with the man again. Yes, it’s true in case of Bengali men too!! In fact they might hold on to it longer considering that Euro has started off.

Short and ‘Instant Delivery’ are buzz words. Most of the good things in today’s life are short and instant; SMS, Relationships, Sachin Tendulkar…… As a matter of fact, Twenty 20 was very much like the cheerleader’s skirt - short and instant enough to grab everyone by their eyeballs. This format is perfect representation of our changing patience levels. Instant gratification!!

Cheerleaders will be used more often. With every saas-bahu serial completing it’s 100th episode, or political party completing its 5 years, or MET department being successful in predicting India’s monsoon, we will see them do the jig. As a nation, we now want to celebrate our victories.

We, like British, love our royalty. Why else would 4 out of 8 teams have some mention about it. (Rajasthan Royals, Super Kings Chennai, Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers). Out of the remaining four, Mumbai Indians is the only name that appears creatively challenged. After a complete cycle, we have started taking pride in our royalty again. One more thing. Money can’t buy everything (read creativity) – but then that’s more for Mukesh Ambani.

The reason for success of IPL lies elsewhere. Inherently, we always wanted to ‘openly’ cheer performing sports person from competing teams but swallowed it to nurse our national, patriotic pride. It’s not that we are any less democratic as a country, but it’s our own jingoist fervour that stopped us from doing so.

As IPL was not about any nationality, it liberated us from that moral restriction. It was acceptable to cheer Shaun Marsh or Shane Watson beat the s&%t out of Indian bowlers. Admit it you had always wanted to openly cheer Shoaib Akhtar bowl out the batting line up. It is only post IPL that we have really started enjoying cricket more as a sport!!!

And It’s my opinion that IPL now socially stands for India Patriotically Liberated.

Subhash Chandra Goel, the Chairman of Essel Group, launched a private cricket league in April 2007. This new entity is called the Indian Cricket League (ICL) and would follow the Twenty20 format. The first tournament of the league started on November 30, 2007 and concluded on December 16, 2007. The tournament was played at Mayajaal Cricket Ground in Chennai, Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Gurgaon, near Delhi, Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad and Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, near Chandigarh. The traditional cricket venues of cricket in India were denied to ICL, which incidentally, are not owned by the BCCI.

Subhash Chandra was born on November 30, 1950, in Hissar, a major city of Haryana. He left formal education after 12th and never attended college. Instead, he joined the family business of trading and exporting rice. He was only nineteen years old then. Subhash Chandra started a vegetable oil unit which was an instant success. In 1981, he founded Essel Packaging Limited, after visiting a packaging exhibition. It was later merged with the Swiss group, Propack AG and was renamed, Essel Propack Limited, the largest speciality packaging company in the world.

In 1991, viewers in India were under the firm grip of Doordarshan, the state-controlled TV network. Subhash Chandra was the first in India to understand the huge business potential of satellite television. He launched the first private satellite TV station in India. Zee TV started on October 2, 1992, followed by Zee News, Zee Cinema and Music Asia. Today Zee TV is the most popular television network in India with more than 500 million viewers in 120 countries.

It has now been learned that Mohammad Asif's return home will be decided when test results for the substance found in his luggage come back.

While PCB and Pakistan's Ambassador to Pakistan are 'hopeful' for a positive way out of this situation, a lawyer has already been appointed to assist the cricketer.

There are conflicting statements with regards to whether Asif is merely being kept in custody on suspision or there actually has been a charge and arrest made against him. As news of his 'arrest' has spread through out the media like wild-fire, the Pakistani ambassador, Ahsan Ullah Khan has stated various claims of charges lodged and charges dropped against the player as untrue and baseless.

There is no question of charges against Mohammad Asif being dropped (by UAE authorities) when no charge has been filed against him as yet!

IPL has already said that, if found guilty, Asif will not be a part of their future campaigns and he could very well face a life ban from professional cricket as well.

Another day in the life of one of our star cricketers!

Gulfnews has just reported that the drug charges against Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Asif for which he was taken in to custody yesterday have been dropped and he is set to fly out from Dubai soon. The 25-year-old pacer was detained at Dubai International Airport on charges of possessing illegal drugs while returning to Pakistan on Sunday after playing for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League. The Pakistan Consulate in Dubai is to make an official statement soon. Details about the tests conducted on him have not been revealed. According to Dubai customs officials, Asif was caught with 0.24gm of an illegal substance in his wallet. This substance was also sent for laboratory tests.

We have seen how the Japanese make expensive but high quality electronic products and how China knocks-off these products and floods the subcontinent. The inception of Indian Premier League (IPL) has just been the reverse. Kapil Dev and co. somehow got the brilliant idea of employing a city-wise cricket tournament which not only will bring in a crazy crowds but also will be an ideal kick-off for the Indian Cricket League (ICL). They followed the idea up with a modest implementation and thus a modest success. Enter the richest cricket body in the world, BCCI. They smell out the significance of this (non-patentable) idea and translate it to the IPL in a grand fashion (But Lalit Modi claims the opposite!). Ironically, the BCCI is now condescending on the ICL and claims to be glad to lend a helping hand to the latter. After the immense success of what may be hailed as the most profitable sporting event in the country, the ICL seems discoloured and has a lot of mending work to do. Here are a few possible effects of the IPL phenomenon on the future of ICL:

ICL removes their restriction on participation in IPL
ICL may think of lifting their restriction that players of ICL may not play in the IPL so that newer players do not opt or IPL without a thought and to attract seasoned players. But with the current funds and pay scales, this may not be implemented, for the existing players may leave to IPL!

ICL increases funds allotted to the promotion and execution of the tournament
Tough call, especially with no organisational backup as in the case of IPL. But if they could do that, then we have a game on between the IPL and the ICL!

ICL reconciles with the BCCI
If ICL has the guts and the down-to-earth attitude and joins the BCCI, it may convert the ICL tournament into a smaller form of the IPL or as a platform for selection at a more domestic level, may be in a different format too.

ICL chooses to be an inter-season tournament
In my opinion, the most probable choice for the ICL would be to conduct its tournament between two consecutive IPL tournaments so that it generates employment opportunities fot the new players and provide perennial entertainment for the audience. For this, though, they have to have a thoroughly planned and tight schedule in harmony with the ICC's.

The ICL has to bounce back big time if it requires the Indian audience to remember and look forward to it. Whatever be the case, the war between the clubs is good for both the entertainment of the audience and the employment and recognition of the ever-struggling players who strive to make a mark at the international level. If you can think of/predict some other courses of action, please comment those too.

Breaking News: Pakistani cricket player Mohammad Asif has been arrested in Dubai when banned drugs were found in his possession!

The fast bowler who was playing for Delhi Daredevils in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) was taken in to custody at the Dubai International airport while he was returning to Pakistan from Mumbai via Dubai. He has been charged with contraband!

It has now been learnt that he had large quantities of opium in his possession.

The PCB would brief the media about the situation later on today.

The arrest is just the latest controversy to hit Pakistan's troubled cricket team over the last two years.

Asif was banned for one year after he tested positive for the steroid nandrolone in October 2006. Fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar was banned for two years on the same charge.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was established in 1929. It is the central governing body for cricket in India. Technically, it is a private club and is not required to make it's finances public. BCCI generally uses government-owned stadiums across the country at a nominal annual rent. Central Government's minister for agriculture, Sharad Powar, is the current President of the board. Lalit Modi, the chairman and commissioner of Indian Premier League, is the vice president of BCCI. Niranjan Rasiklal Shah, a former opening batsman from Saurashtra, is the secretary of the cricket board. The BCCI is the richest cricket board in the world.

Cricket was introduced in India by the British in 1720s. The first cricket match in India was played between two teams of visiting sailors at a seaport in Kutch in 1725. The first Indians to play the game of cricket in India were the minority community of Parsis in Bombay. They founded the Orient Cricket Club in 1848, the first non-British cricket club in Bombay, India. In 1892, an annual cricket match was played between Parsis and the Europeans. Hindus entered the fray in 1907, what came to be known as a triangular cricket tournament. Muslims joined the game in 1912 in the Bombay Quadrangular. The four Palwankar brothers were the biggest Indian cricket stars.

Das Schweigen der Schlemmer

Hermann Ploppa

Was ist „Clearing“?

1.) die autokratische Struktur von BCCI: nur Abedi und sein Vertreter Swaleh Naqvi hatten den vollständigen Überblick über das Geschehen im hauseigenen Labyrinth;

2.) BCCI war lächerlich unterkapitalisiert: einem Milliardenumsatz stand ein Eigenkapital von 2.5 Millionen Dollar gegenüber;

3.) die Geschäftspartner (Anleger, Kreditnehmer) waren zum größten Teil Drittweltpotentaten, die von Gehimdiensten der USA und Großbritannien abhängig waren;

Warum denn?

Rajasthan Royals have created history. The team with few stars won the IPL League title.

The Rajasthan Royals won a last ball thriller to emerge champions of the inaugural DLF Indian Premier League by three wickets at Mumbai today.

Sohail Tanveer scored one run of the final ball to bring victory to Rajasthan Royals. It was a relief to see the best team in the league stage lift the trophy.

Earlier winning the toss, Shane Warne elected to field. This was a smart choice because they won eight of nine league games chasing the total. Super Kings batted well until the 15th over and had a tough time scoring in the last five hours. This was due to some excellent bowling by Tanveer and Shane Watson.

Batting second, Royals lost three wickets for 40 runs. Yusuf Pathan and Shane Watson put a decent partnership to bring Royals close to the win. Yusuf was lucky to survive two dropped catches and made a much-needed 50 runs. Shane Watson was out attempting a shot of Murali.

Finally, Shane Warne and Tanveer put a partnership towards the end to bring victory to Royals.

Rajasthan are now the champions of this ground-breaking tournament, and deservedly so as they have been the best team on view throughout the IPL. It has been a great journey for all those involved in this concept, and India can boast of hosting one of the best tournaments in world cricket today.

For picking up three wickets and scoring 56 runs, Yusuf Pathan was adjudged the Man of the Match trophy while his team-mate Shane Watson collected the Man of the Series award for scoring 472 runs to go with his 17 wickets.

Foreign players participating in the IPL (Indian Premier League) may soon find a higher amount being deducted in the form of taxes if the Income Tax department has its way. The I-T department has sent a notice to BCCI asking for copies of all agreements signed between the players and the franchisees.

Twenty20 - cricket’s latest format is making waves in India throught the Indian Premier League. A huge noisy crowd, film stars rooting for their own teams and cheerleaders are reminders of the league’s resounding success. So with everyone sharing the spoils, how can the Income Tax department want to miss the party.

The income tax department has now asked BCCI to furnish details of the tax deductions made while making payments to these players. The income tax department and the BCCI have had a long history of dispute on taxation issues. And even as BCCI is busy milking the IPL cashcow, the I-T department is determined to extract its pound of flesh with what it feels is a purely commercial business venture and not just cricket.

In its notice served to BCCI, the I-T separtment has asked the BCCI to clarify whether TDS at 11.33% has been deducted before releasing the payment
They have also said that since the contract is a long term contract of three years, why should the applicable tax slabs prevailing in the country not be applied, a demand that is supported by tax experts.

BD Gupta, Former Income Tax Commissioner said, “There is no exemption. Whatever money they make they have to pay 11% TDS and after that they also have to file their income tax returns.”

The BCCI is likely to contest this claim on the grounds that the IPL is a short term venture and does not amount to employment.

Meanwhile the service tax department is also investigating whether any of the contracts signed between BCCI and the various franchisees come under the service tax net or not.

Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket competition created and promoted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and backed by International Cricket Council (ICC). IPL is the brainchild of Lalit Kumar Modi, who is also the chairman and commissioner of the league. Indian Premier League is modeled along the lines of club football in Europe, specially the English Premier League. Lalit Modi has claimed that the idea to monetise Indian Cricket was in his mind since the mid 1990s, but before he could actually implement his plans, Subhash Chandra of Zee Television started an unofficial version called Indian Cricket League (ICL).
