Zum umfangreichen Aufgabenspektrum zählt die Durchführung der Construction Management Leistungen für das Fluggastterminal und der betriebsspezifischen Gebäude des geplanten Hightech-Airports. Der Start für das Terminal ist somit auch für Drees & Sommer Berlin der offizielle Startschuss für ihre Tätigkeit.

Journalisten auf dem BBI mit Gummistiefeln, Westen und Blauhelmen

Wenn BBI ruft, dann kommen sie alle. Gestern hatten die Berliner Flughäfen mal wieder auf den neuen Hauptstadtflughafen Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI) eingeladen. Und die Journalisten und Politiker strömten in Scharen hin. Sie fuhren freiwillig mit einem Shuttlebus zur Großbaustelle, sie zogen sich (bei gefühlten 40 Grad) freiwillig gelbe Gummistiefel, Warnwesten und Blauhelme an. Nur um den ersten Bauabschnitt des Flughafens bewundern zu dürfen.

Nämlich 185 Meter (von 405) zukünftiger unterirdischer Bahnhof. Direkt darüber beginnt nun der Bau des Terminals. Damit (mit dem Rohbau des Bahnhofes) sei man nun pünktlich fertig geworden, ließ der BBI verlauten. Auch der Regierende Bürgermeister Klaus Wowereit (ebenfalls mit Weste und Blauhelm, die Gummistiefel durfte er weglassen) war sichtlich zufrieden. Man liege komplett im Zeitplan, "auch wenn es ein ambitionierter Zeitplan ist", so Wowereit. Ambitioniert, aha.

Ambitioniert heißt auch motiviert, ehrgeizig, rücksichtslos, karrieregeil, strebsam, zielstrebig, emotioniert, hochstehend, engagiert, bewundernswert, karriereorientiert. Mhm. Also ein karrieregeiler Zeitplan? Oder zielstrebig? Oder doch eher bewundernswert, wie es Politiker und Großbaustellen-Chefs immer wieder schaffen, das Volk zu foppen. Denn egal ob der Bahnhof nun im Zeitplan liegt oder nicht. Einen echten Bahnanschluss wird BBI 2011 nicht haben. Aber der Beifall nach Wowereits Rede war trotzdem groß. Sehr ambitioniert eben.

As the Babcock & Brown share price plummeted on 12 June, our research director Greg Hoffman would call out a new low every 10 minutes and look at me like a magpie chick waiting for a worm. After I told him I didn’t know it well enough too many times, he went off in search of alternatives.

All of the Babcock-related securities were down significantly. How about the unsecured notes (BNBG), he asked? Same problem. B&B Wind? Yeah, it’ a possibility but it needs to be cheaper. B&B Power? Alinta assets, no thanks. B&B Infrastructure? Hang on, doesn’t that own Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal? I worked on a bid for that at Macquarie – it’s a sensational asset. I’ll take a look.

Something simpler please

So, in the search for a simpler alternative unfairly tainted by the Babcock brush, I downloaded the latest annual report for Babcock and Brown Infrastructure (BBI). I was in for a shock.

This fund listed in 2002 with Dalrymple Bay as its only asset. In 2003, it bought interests in two power stations and a wind farm. In 2004, it added a New Zealand energy and gas business, a submarine cable linking power grids in the US and a gas transporter operating in the Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Portugal and the UK. In 2006 it gobbled up PD Ports, WestNet Rail, NorthWestern Energy in the US, a Belgian water container business and failed in a bid for GasNet. In 2007 it teamed up with Singapore Power, B&B Power and B&B Wind in the highly competitive auction for Alinta and bought separate ports businesses in Spain, Belgium and Italy.

Phew. That was enough for me, I didn’t need to turn past page seven. Whatever happened to cheap German or Japanese property that no-one else wants?

When I read the prospectus in 2004, I grudgingly gave these overpaid bankers the benefit of the doubt. The case studies of investments they’d made included a bunch of German apartments where the rent more than covered the debt repayments and all maintenance costs, and Japanese property that was generating enough cash flow to do the same. Both asset classes looked unloved and cheap. They were also gaining valuable expertise in renewable energy – particularly wind – long before it became trendy and, at that point, I’d have been prepared to call it a somewhat impressive track record.

Not so good with others’ money

It was established with their own money, though. Since the float, Babcock has become the steward of more than $70bn of other people’s money and, as you’ve read above, its approach has been quite different.

That’s a shame (to say the least for the people whose money it is). Someone inside Babcock obviously has the skills to identify assets that are cheap. It wouldn’t have generated 70% profit growth a year but, with discipline and patience, they could have generated excellent long-term returns (imagine what they could be doing with a nice large pile of cash right now). If there’s to be a recovery it will require a return to the strategy that was once extremely successful.

This is the first post on the new blog site and the new revision of the Mongrel Style website .... To which I would like your feedback.... I have taken a different stance and at the moment I have set a target to prove to people what is possible.

Mongrel Aka Benjamin Bressington has gone through some major challenges in life and in business since December 07. What I noticed particularly in the "Business Coach or Business Mentor" World. Was that most people had NO Idea about business or marketing and were just flogging at most some form of product which they may have never read or even used let alone implemented in a business for themselves let alone anyone else. And for this they were charging thousands of dollars and sometimes ridiculous price for nothing besides a conversation or telephone chat about theories and ideas.

What I didn't like is all the lies and mis-truths in the industry of money they make and how they do it.... I want to be involved in a business that has integrity and is authentic and honest, something that I am proud to tell the kids and friends about not the opposite.

I am not saying that the content is poor of BBI or Business Coaches or Mentors what I am saying is the execution can be better. But with every problem there is an opportunity. From this I also noticed that everyone was becoming or was or had been a coach, mentor or consultant. However few were even marginally successful or making money, many were working 2 jobs with the coaching being the second or they just were not getting anywhere besides financially in trouble.

WHY is this..... What were the coaches getting wrong.....

From what I noticed was;

1. Most coaches were / are so focused on the product and what is in it for them that they forgot all about the client or customer which if they read their product is not a good thing.

2. Most Coaches did not use or create their own brand, or even use technology to capitalise on what they do.

3. Most people just didn't implement or know how to implement their own strategies.... anyone can be a parot but it is the doing that counts....

So being a Mongrel I like to breed a new concept and a new design I played hard at this consulting game and found it was tough, and made a lot of mistakes however each time I learnt. What I found was that everyone would bring me a great idea or business concept that they wanted to launch or market but just didnt know how or where to turn to do this. So I took on a few of these ideas and realised that all was doing was building myself a job in a new company ... this is not what I wanted

People didnt know where to start with technology or the internet. What I noticed with the internet is that anyone can be an expert, or professional just because they can turn on the computer. This however is not the case on the internet to make money and I mean good money of at least $10 000 a month or more you need to know what you are doing. So I set myself a challenge I want to teach 1000 people how to make $10,000 a month or more, and take them there from nothing.

So with this Mongrel Style Consulting morphed into Mongrel Style once again it is a hybrid of ideas, and theories put into practice. What I am doing with Mongrel Style is the following I am going to

1. document how I am starting with nothing less than AUD$1000 and going to create a $10,000 month business while working a primary job (in a law firm)

2. I am going to provide people with product and the how to implement these strategies into their business for much much less than they would pay a business coach or consultant. I am going to give people the how to's the information business coaches don't or won't tell you.

3. I am going to answer your questions and interview people around the country to provide you with the answers to your questions on business and life to build and create the business you want .... that gives you the results that you want.

Passagierzahlen erstmals über 20 Millionen / Hohe Zuwächse bei Umsatz und Ergebnis

Das Geschäftsjahr 2007 war das bislang erfolgreichste in der Geschichte der Berliner Flughäfen. Erstmals wurden in Berlin in nur einem Jahr 20 Millionen Fluggäste befördert. Dieses Ergebnis entspricht einem Zuwachs von 8,3 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr. Berlin wächst damit um rund 30 Prozent schneller als der Durchschnitt der anderen deutschen Verkehrsflughäfen und belegt in Europa bei den Flughafenstandorten Platz 15.

Gestiegene Profitabilitität – Wirtschaftsjahr 2007

Die gesamtwirtschaftliche Situation des Unternehmens hat sich 2007 gegenüber dem Vorjahr weiter verbessert. Die überaus positive Verkehrsentwicklung sowie höherer Entgelte bei den Start- und Landegebühren durch sukzessive Rabattminderungen haben die Aviation-Umsatzerlöse um 9,8 Prozent auf 156 Millionen Euro anwachsen lassen. Auch die Umsatzerlöse aus dem Non-Aviation-Geschäft sind im Geschäftsjahr 2007 kräftig gestiegen. Hier war ein Anstieg um 14,8 Prozent auf 38,7 Millionen Euro zu verzeichnen. Insgesamt lagen die Umsatzerlöse bei 233,3 Millionen Euro.

Der Konzernjahresüberschuss betrug 2007 16,7 Millionen Euro und liegt damit um 12,2 Millionen Euro über dem vergleichbaren Vorjahreswert von 4,5 Millionen Euro. Das EBITDA – Ergebnis vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen – fiel mit 61,3 Millionen Euro um 10,5 Prozent höher aus als im Vorjahr.

„Die Berliner Flughäfen haben 2007 erneut ein starkes Wachstum hingelegt“, betonte Dr. Rainer Schwarz, Sprecher der Geschäftsführung der Berliner Flughäfen. „Hervorzuheben ist dabei, dass die Entwicklung des Geschäftsverlaufs über dem Passagierwachstum lag. Die Fluggastzahlen sind um 8,3 Prozent gestiegen, während das EBITDA um 10,5 Prozent zugenommen hat. Das zeigt, dass 2007 ein weiteres sehr erfolgreiches Jahr war, in dem unser Unternehmen noch profitabler und effizienter geworden ist.“

Schwarz weiter: „Durch die systematische Steigerung der Umsätze, eine konsequente Kostendisziplin sowie eine kontinuierliche Effizienzsteigerung haben wir in den Jahren 2005 bis 2007 bereits 165 Millionen Euro als FBS-Eigenbeitrag für den BBI erwirtschaftet. Das sind bereits rund 38 Prozent des gesamten Eigenfinanzierungsbeitrages in Höhe von 440 Millionen Euro. Wir liegen 11 Prozent über Plan.“

Das Investitionsvolumen betrug 2007 insgesamt 153 Millionen Euro. Der größte Teil davon ist in den Bau des BBI geflossen.

Thomas Weyer, Geschäftsführer Technik und BBI der Berliner Flughäfen: „2007 war das erste Jahr der großen Bauarbeiten für den neuen Hauptstadt-Airport BBI. Wichtigste Arbeiten waren der Baubeginn am BBI-Bahnhof, die Fertigstellung der westlichen Schienenanbindung sowie der neuen Rollbahnanschlüsse. Unser Mittelstandkonzept geht voll auf. Wir haben bereits Aufträge im Wert von 866 Millionen Euro vergeben, davon landeten 86 Prozent in der Region.“

Ausblick:

Der positive Trend bei der Verkehrsentwicklung setzt sich in den ersten Monaten des Jahres 2008 fort. Von Januar bis April haben die Passagierzahlen um 11,1 Prozent auf insgesamt 6,4 Millionen zugenommen. Im Durchschnitt wachsen die deutschen Verkehrsflughäfen nur um rund 5 Prozent. Bei den Flugzeugbewegungen gab es an den drei Berliner Flughäfen einen Anstieg um 4,2 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum. Bei der Fracht hat sich der Umschlag um 14,2 Prozent verbessert. Für 2008 rechnen die Berliner Flughäfen mit einem weiteren Anstieg des Passagieraufkommens auf über 20 Millionen Fluggäste.

They even came out with their Total Access program that allows users to rent movies online and bring them into stores to exchange for a free rental. On paper, the Total Access program sounds like a really good idea but when factoring the costs to keep the Blockbuster stores open and that people are just using Blockbuster stores as exchange locations rather than a place to pay for movie rentals, this seems like a losing formula for Blockbuster.

Signs that Blockbuster won't keep up with Netflix:

1. I tried out their Total Access a couple years ago, got a free month trial and canceled shortly thereafter because Netflix had superior shipping times to my location and had more availability of movies. Just recently I received an e-mail from Blockbuster asking me to rejoin the Total Access program (one movie at a time) and I would receive one month free of charge. If Blockbuster is trying to attract new customers and bring back old customers by offering them free movies, something must be going sour.
2. A local Blockbuster just recently shut down and was situated next to Bristol Farms, Baskin Robbins, a US post office, and luxury apartments that houses many young professionals and UCSD students. The location is not a terrible location and has plenty of foot traffic that goes through, but when you can't sell a product, you have to shut down regardless of the territory.
3. With a slowing economy and higher gas prices, customers will be less willing to drive far distances (remember you have to drive to get the movie and then return it) to exchange a movie at Blockbuster. Cutbacks will also need to be made in people's spending habits, and if people don't care about the Total Access program, their 1, 2, and 3 movie at a time plans are identical in price to Netflix.
4. Netflix has a library of over 90,000 movie titles and claims that 95% of their subscribers are in locations that are able to receive movies within one business day.
5. I remember just a couple years ago when I had the Total Access program, I had to return new releases within 2 days, but now they're allowing new releases to go 5 days. Blockbuster doesn't even have leverage on new releases anymore.

Don't even try to get onto the Blockbuster ship because it's not currently sinking, it has already sunk.

Warum ich für eine Offenhaltung des Flughafens bin? Erstens: Der im Bau befindliche Hauptstadtairport Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI) stößt zur Eröffnung 2011 an seine Belastungsgrenzen. Das 2-Mrd. €-Mammutprojekt mag das größte Infrastrukturprojekt Deutschlands seit Langem sein, aber es ist schlicht zu klein. Das Terminal kann 2011 22 bis maximal 25 Millionen Passagiere abfertigen. Allerdings hat man einfach ein Problem: Bereits 2007 flogen mehr als 20 Mio. Passagiere nach Berlin - 2011 werden es weit mehr als 25 Mio. Passagiere sein, denn der Berliner Flugmarkt wächst unaufhaltsam.

Vor allem die privaten Geschäftsflieger, die die zwei Start- und Landebahnen nur unnötig verstopfen würden, sollten deswegen eher Tempelhof anfliegen. BBI hat ein striktes Nachtflugverbot und wird dadurch enorm in der Start- und Landekapazität eingeschränkt sein. Eine Stimme für Tempelhof ist also auch ein Bekenntnis zum Wirtschaftsstandort Berlin.

Gerade dieses VIP-Image des Flughafens versuchen die SPD/Linke gerade mit einer Neid-Kampagne zu ihren Gunsten zu wenden. Nach dem Motto "Ich bezahl' doch keinen VIP-Flughafen" hängen überall in der Stadt Plakate gegen den Volksentscheid aus. Doch die Lösung wäre so einfach: Die Deutsche Bahn AG hat mehrfach ihren guten Willen gezeigt, den Flughafen zu übernehmen und den Flugbetrieb eigenständig fort zu führen. Doch daraus wird nichts - der Senat blockt ab.

Schon vor einigen Monaten hat der Regierende Bürgermeister Berlins, Klaus Wowereit den Plänen der Deutschen Bahn, den Flughafen selbst zu betreiben, eine Absage erteilt. Nun erneuerte die Bahn ihr Angebot, gemeinsam mit den amerikanischen Investoren Ronald S. Lauder und Fred Langhammer den Flughafen zu übernehmen und ein internationales Gesundheitszentrum mit Landebahn zu schaffen. Nach Angaben von Wolf-Dieter Siebert, Generalbevollmächtigter und Experte für wichtige und dringende internationale Projekte der Deutschen Bahn AG, macht das die Bahn nicht aus unternehmerischen Gründen, sondern als Berliner Unternehmen. Vergessen ist inzwischen weitgehend, dass die Deutsche Bahn im November 2005 ein Angebot der Hansestadt Hamburg annehmen wollte, als Gegenleistung für die Beteiligung an der Hamburger Hochbahn und der Hamburger Hafengesellschaft die Konzernzentrale nach Hamburg zu verlegen. Erst der Bund als Eigentümer stoppte aus standortpolitischen Erwägungen diese Pläne des Berliner Unternehmers Mehdorn, Arbeitsplätze aus Berlin auszulagern.

Damals sagte Bundesverkehrsminister Tiefensee in Bezug auf die Hamburger Kaufabsichten, es passe in die Zukunftsstrategie, den Konzern als Mobilitäts- und Logistik-Dienstleister zu stärken. Eine Beteiligung der Bahn am Flughafen Tempelhof passt jedoch kaum in die Zukunftsstrategie der Länder Berlin, Brandenburg und des Bundes. Diese gaben im sogenannten Konsensbeschluß vom 26. Mai 1996 die Empfehlung, den Flughafen Schönefeld als einzigen Berliner Flughafen auszubauen und die anderen zu schließen. Vorgesehen war die Schließung des Flughafens Tempelhof zum Zeitpunkt des rechtskräftigen Planfeststellung. Der Flughafen Tegel ist nach diesem Beschluß, der zwischen dem damaligen Regierenden Bürgermeister Eberhard Diepgen (CDU), dem Brandenburger Ministerpräsidenten Manfred Stolpe und dem Bundesverkehrsminister Matthias Wissmann ausgehandelt wurde, spätestens bei Inbetriebnahme von BBI in Schönefeld zu schließen.

Die jetzigen Pläne der Bahn stoßen in Wirtschaft und Politik auf ein geteiltes Echo. Die von Bahnchef Mehdorn angeschriebenen Manager äußern überwiegend Unverständnis über die Schließungspläne. Der ehemalige Berliner Finanzsenator Klaus Riebschläger (SPD) und Friedbert Pflüger, der Fraktionsvorsitzende der CDU im Berliner Abgeordnetenhaus, halten nach Angaben der Berliner Morgenpost Tempelhof für den Erfolg des Flughafens Berlin Brandenburg International für wichtig. Senatssprecher Richard Meng kritisierte den Vorstandsvorsitzenden des Staatsunternehmens Deutsche Bahn, der mit seinem Brief Unterstützer gegen eine von den Eigentümern seines Unternehmens getroffene Entscheidung sammle.

Kurz vielleicht ein Ausflug in die Geschichte. 1996 haben sich Eberhard Diepgen (CDU, damaliger Berliner Bürgermeister) und Verkehrsminister Wissmann geeinigt, dass man in Berlin einen neuen Flughafen (BBI - Berlin Brandenburg International) bauen muss. Dann gab es dazu ein Urteil des Bundesverwaltungssgerichtes bei dem gesagt wurde. Ihr wisst schon wo ihr euch  euren BBI hinschieben könnt - außer ihr macht die beiden anderen Flughäfen (Tegel und Tempelhof) zu, dann ist BBI gerechtfertigt. Aber das hatten sie 1996 schon abgekaspert dass sie das machen. Dann gab es den ICAT e.V, der sich dafür eingesetzt hat dass über die Schließung von Tempelhof per Volksentscheid abgestimmt wird.

Und da sind wir nun - bzw. am 27. April sind wir da.  Aber nun mal zur Broschüre, die dem ganzen beilag.  Da geben sich ja beide sowas von die Blöße. Die ICAT argumentiert da mit Scheinargumenten - das ist schon nicht mehr schön. Mal ein paar Auszüge:

• "Woanders klappt es doch auch! [...] Was will Berlin sein? Kreisstadt oder Metropole?"
• "Doch Berlin ist für Tempelhof. eim Volksbegehren haben weit über 200.000 Bürger in Zeichen für Tempelhof gesetzt." (Ich dachte ob Berlin für Tempelhof ist wird am 27. April geklärt)
• "Setzen Sie ein Zeichen für mehr Demokratie!" (Wer nicht gegen die Schließung Tempelhofs ist ist gegen Demokratie - hä?!)

Sowas populistisches ist mir lange nicht mehr untergekommen.  Kommen wir also zu den Fürsprechern der Schließung der Senat und das Abgeordnetenhaus. Das kann man kurz und knapp zusammenfassen. Da spielen hauptsächlich 2 Sachen eine Rolle.

1.  Sie haben Angst um BBI. BBI gibt es nur wenn Tempelhof und Tegel zugemacht werden.

2. Man kann richtig sehen wie in ihren Augen so langsam die Dollarzeichen erscheinen. Wenn sie das Ding nämlich zumachen dann können da ja andere Unternehmen ihr Zeug aufmachen. Es wird zwar nichts verbindliches gesagt was das sein soll - aber irgendetwas wird es schon sein. Und von den Unternehmen kriegen sie natürlich Geld.

Nunja. Ich werde wohl trotzdem gegen die Schließung stimmen. Weil - warum sollte man Tempelhof schließen? Und damit zusammenhängend. Tegel kann man nicht schließen, das müssen / wollen sie aber. Die Zahlen  zeigen das denke ich:

• Schönefeld fertigte im ersten Halbjahr 2007 3.006.742 Fluggäste ab
• Tegel fertigte im selben Halbjahr 6.103.115 Fluggäste ab
• Naja gut - und Tempelhof: 184.139 Fluggäst

Wie gesagt wenn Tegel an der Entscheidung nicht mit dranhängen würde wäre es was anderes. Aber ich meine man muss sich auch mal überlegen wie man an Schönefeld (also zukünftig BBI) rankommt. Mit der S9 und der S45. Ja die S9 das ist die S-Bahnlinie auf der sie nichtmal die modernen 481er S-Bahn-Baureihe einsetzen. Und seit kurzem bezahlt man dafür auch noch mehr, weil sie den S-Bahnhof Flughafen Schönefeld als Endstation in den C-Bereich verfrachtet haben. Schön Touristen ausnehmen. Und dann fahren da noch Fernbahnen (IC und ICE). An Tempelhof kommt man mit S-Bahn (Ring) und U-Bahn und Bus ran. An Tegel mit U-Bahn und ExpressBus.

Nunja und was mich als zweites daran hindert für die Schließung zu stimmen, ist die Tatsache, dass noch nicht klar ist was aus dem Ding dann gemacht werden soll.

Ich bin auf jeden Fall gespannt was am 27. dabei rauskommt.

I need TWX to do better within the next 30 days so that I can take advantage of my stock options before they expire! It hasn't done too hot since I quit (or the past year for that matter)...I should probably just pull the trigger before it gets any lower. The picture below also makes me sad. TWX was the only stock that's down of the few that I follow. Even the pathetic Blockbuster was trending with the market.

It's an exhausting process. The weekend part starts Friday evening at 7: 00 PM and ends Sunday afternoon at 5:15 PM with 15 hours of class time. The Mon-Thurs group has 25 hours of class. I've been surprised how attentive the students have been despite the long hours, only a few times I saw people's attention stray or their eyelids get heavy. Today was the last day and folks were getting drowsy so one of the other teachers was strolling around nudging those who were nodding off to keep them awake. Some folks moved to the back of the room and were pacing back and forth to stay alert. Now that's not something you see often in North America.

Some of the questions students asked were: When did Christians start having their worship services on Sunday instead of Saturday? What is in the Talmud? How did Islam start? Why did they keep writing more and more creeds and which of those should we use today? Was Martin Luther married? Since tithing was enforced by the Roman Empire couldn't we do something similar in our churches today? That idea got lots of support from the class.

Now that we've finished I'm pretty tuckered out, but it was a fun seminar to teach nonetheless. On the home front we seem to be doing well. Nancy is winding down her first semester classes this week and Jeremiah and Deborah are busy at school and staying healthy. Harmattan is over now, so the dust has settled down and the heat is back. Oh for those cool January nights...

Global disability and poverty efforts get key boost from agreement between SU’s Burton Blatt Institute and World Bank

A promising new collaboration between the World Bank and Syracuse University could spur global efforts to reduce poverty for an estimated 400 million people with disabilities living in developing countries. The Burton Blatt Institute: Centers of Innovation on Disability at Syracuse University (BBI) and the World Bank have signed an agreement to support activities of the Global Partnership on Disability and Development (GPDD), an international disability network initiated by the World Bank and committed to promoting inclusive development as a means to achievement of Millennium Development Goals.

Established in 2006 with assistance from the World Bank and set up by a multi-stakeholder task force, the GPDD brings together organizations, government agencies, multinational lenders and research centers focused on reducing the link between disability and poverty, and promoting inclusive development activities. BBI will receive $350,000 from the World Bank’s Development Grant Facility (DGF)—with another $350,000 likely in 2009—to support the growth and organizational development of the GPDD. In turn, the GPDD will share information, expand knowledge, improve public policies and practices, and foster collaboration to improve education and economic opportunity for individuals with disabilities and their families worldwide.

“This is a great honor and unique opportunity for BBI and Syracuse University,” says Peter Blanck, BBI chairman and SU University Professor. “Both BBI and the GPDD share the same mission of advancing the civic, economic and social participation of people with disabilities worldwide. This collaboration and support system will help further accelerate the inclusion of people with disabilities into the social and economic mainstream.”

“This new collaboration will connect the expertise and resources of our Burton Blatt Institute to the GPDD and the World Bank in ways that will promote inclusive economic and social development across the globe,” says SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor.

“Given that people living with disabilities are among the poorest of the poor worldwide, we welcome this agreement with BBI and Syracuse University as another step forward in dismantling the link between poverty and disability,” says Joy Phumaphi, vice president of the World Bank’s Human Development Network. “The social and economic exclusion of people with disabilities in developing countries requires the attention and investment of resources by development institutions, government and nongovernmental organizations.”

Maria Reina has been jointly selected by BBI and GPDD leadership to serve as executive director of the leadership network in an open, international competitive process. Reina, director of international projects at BBI’s Washington, D.C., office since 2006, has diverse experiences working on disability research, advocacy and development work, including an intensive dedication to the United Nations Ad Hoc Committee for the Disability Convention. She previously worked for the Center for International Rehabilitation; the Institute for International Disability Advocacy; the Institute for International Cooperation and Development; the Argentinean Disabled People Organization, Cilsa; and the University Institute San Martin in Rosario, Argentina, where she was an adjunct professor.

“As a person with a disability from Argentina, I have traveled to developing countries and witnessed the physical and attitudinal barriers that diminish full participation and contributions of people with disabilities,” says Reina.

During the next six months, BBI and the GPDD will mobilize disability-led organizations worldwide—in cooperation with governmental and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector—to identify best practice strategies that promote inclusion in economic and social development. Through research, training and community development activities, the GPDD will increase participation of people with disabilities in national poverty reduction efforts in developing countries.

“Improved access to education, health care, technology and transportation are needed to reduce the barriers of stigma and discrimination,” says Kalle Könkkölä, GPDD task force chair.

The World Bank provides critically needed financial and technical assistance to developing countries, and is composed of a number of development institutions owned by 185 member countries, including the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). The mission of both institutions is to reduce global poverty and to improve living standards of developing countries around the world.

While IBRD focuses on middle income and credit-worthy poor countries, IDA focuses on the poorest countries in the world. The conversation these past few days highlighted a number of challenges that both institutions have in common:

• Few students are able to take the time to study full-time and many don't have the resources to do so.
• The AICs that the schools serve have limited financial resources and often can't fully support the students they send, let alone give significant support to the schools themselves.
• The senior leadership of some AICs don't value theological training and hence don't encourage their developing leaders to seek training.

Despite the challenges that were expressed, the conversation was upbeat and led to a number of ideas about ways the two schools might cooperate. :

• The possibility that BBI teachers could contribute articles in the journal that Good News publishes.
• Good News teachers could spend time at BBI to increase their French language capacity and vice versa BBI teachers could work on their English at Good News.
• There can be ongoing conversation about how to reduce financial dependence on overseas supporters.

Thomas returned a day early to Ghana because of an unexpected announcement that the accreditation committee of the Ghanaian Ministry of Education would be visiting Good News today, 16 January 2008. Good News is in the process of becoming accredited to offer a Bachelor of Theology degree. It's a long and complicated process. Pray that all the hurdles will be overcome and that by next fall they will be able to offer the BTh degree.
