sauna-hot, salt-sweaty, whirly-mind and nevertheless excited like a baby who got her first toothy, I opened my first stall together with my long-time friend on sunny 17 August 2008.

i have always baked for friends, family and self consumption. My baking passion has pampered them with occasional treats, one week or another, some asking for more, and others prompting me to open shop, in which I will always reply with a big smile... "one day, right now will be a dream". I recall a repartee by my junior colleague, "don't dream, make it happen!". That was my last day working with the guy and that company...I was touched with his confidence because he only tried one cupcake.

17 aug was an auspicious day i suppose, my favourite number for obvious reasons to most, and a good day despite we would like to have more traffic at the bazaar. I can say this, however, " We Will Be Back! ". I have doubts before in the possibility of opening a stall for 8 hours, a Sunday much less! One, it takes sacrifice (a good big scoop of it), then comes patience (as stubborn as the metal beaters of your mixer), next and the biggest part of all - your PASSION, all poured out to the very last drop. I spent many late nights and early mornings baking, designing stickers, packaging the treats...wonderfully i could still wake up to work at 10am or so, when i only slept at 4am.

today my shoulders are aching, but i'm further charged to do better because we learned so much for 1 day under the bleary red umbrella (hahaha....). We will be back for another sunday...much wiser & street smart!

I am most grateful and appreciative to those who have purchased the treats I made with lots of love(!), and very much flattered to YOU who have thought I have a bakery named Te@mo tucked somewhere in town.

Usahlah kita keliru.

Another post for KAEDIANS. If any of you talented people are looking for a based to sell your art, but you don't have the required contacts and communication skills, I am more than happy to help you with your efforts to get your name out there.

If you are serious about finding extra cash and is commited to sell your art. Please contact my handphone number (You can find it at my Photography page or my Facebook) and we can work something out. I am, by the way looking for artist and designers who want to sell their products of any artistic form. I will be at Architecture First Year Studio on Mondays and Fridays.

Example of Fashion+Art market

Bijou Bazaar

BIJOU Bazaar, at the alcove of Jaya Shopping Centre in Section 14, is a treasure trove where you can shop for items such as clothes, glassware, bags, jewellery and home ornaments.

The name Bijou, a French word which means jewel, is somewhat meaningful as some of the trinkets there can be considered great finds. Bijou Bazaar came about when school friends Maryam Samirah Shamsuddin and Elynor Aisha Seth both 29, wanted to open a boutique selling their own designs under their labels, Le Petite Penderie which carries casual wear and Manja for their lace kebayas.

Not sure if their designs were to the taste of potential customers, Maryam and Elynor came up with the idea to set up a bazaar to test the market first. They roped in their friends and other fellow traders to help them, and Bijou Bazaar was set up.

Currently, they held the Bazaar monthly at Jeumpo D'Ramo at Jalan Maarof, Bangsar.

Two days ago, we went to an Indian Mall. Nowadays the malls here are almost exactly like malls in Am

Two days ago, we went to an Indian Mall. Nowadays the malls here are almost exactly like malls in America, only they sell a lot of Indian clothes and food in addition to the Western clothes and food. And they are always about as crowded as American malls are during the Christmas shopping season. I like going to the malls here because they are much more convenient for short-timers like us than the old street bazaars.

The street bazaars like BD Market and places like Gariahat are fun for me. There are people everywhere, everyone is bargaining at the top of their lungs, tiny shops are filled with colorful fruits and vegetables. And then there is the section of the bazaar where the fish and meats are sold. This part smells disgusting, with fish scales littering the wet ground surrounding the platforms where a row of men sit alongside each other, competing for customers. There are live chickens in cages, squaking and pecking at each other. It seems like they know the end is near for them.

But the air conditioned malls are now preferable to us. Things are more costly, but everything is in one building. There is less haggling and jostling with other people. They are cleaner, and one has the freedom to look at the items one wants to see (versus being shown items, one at a time, by the salesman).

Well, we went the other day, not to shop, but to watch a Hindi film at the theater there. My sister and I watched Singh is Kinng. Can't say I really wanted to watch it, or that it was a wonderful movie, but it was alright. Snoop Dogg collaborated on the title track. But it was a fun experience, sitting through a Bollywood movie (actually, this film is much shorter than the typical), intermission and all. One man's cell phone rang at least four times during the movie, and he answered it! He was practically shouting to be heard over the very loud movie. I didn't really listen to the conversation because I was too busy concentrating on translating as much of the Hindi as I could for my sister. I give the movie a thumbs up, and myself a double thumbs up for understanding the majority and translating it.

After the movie ended, we wandered around the mall for a bit, and passed the Biba store, where I saw a gorgeous white salwar kamiz in the window. I said something to my sister, like "Wow, that salwar is so pretty!" to which my sister replied, "There is no way we're going to be allowed to get it, white gets dirty to easily." We didn't even bother to go in and look at it more closely. But when we got home, we saw that my parents had done some shopping while we were watching the movie, and turns out they had bought that exact salwar for me. Pretty cool, huh? It's funny that they thought I would like that, because my preferences are hard to gauge.

The words of Queens song by the same name have been playing in my head for a while now. I did want to break away from the way I was painting earlier. I didnt get to where I thought I wanted to be. Where I am now is more free (sometimes, like today) than before and I'll be happy here for a while.

The title of this piece is "A woman's work is never done". I'm at my sisters for a months holiday. She has recently had a baby boy. She also has a toddler who also wants quality time with Mummy. I see her on her feet all day and it seems to be almost all night. Everyday. It's feeding, pumping, changing diapers, playing with the two year old, working and the list goes on. And she has help! This one is for all the women who look after their children, homes and also work. Hats off to them!

Zalmai was a taxi driver and the main earner for his family. His income supported ten family members, including an older brother who was shot by the Russians and is paralyzed down the right side of his body. Now the family, which includes four children under the age of three, is finding it extremely difficult to survive. They receive wheat and vegetables from relatives and depend on their neighbors’ generosity.

Things began to look a little more optimistic for Ahmed when one of his relatives told him about the USAID-funded ACAP program. “Finally,” he told me, “I began to feel that there might be hope.” ACAP has agreed to buy the family a cow. “With the cow, we can manufacture milk, yogurt and we will sell this in the bazaar and get income.” As he told me this, a smile finally appeared on his face. Ahmed is still clearly grieving for his son, but now at least he can continue building a future for his family.

The photo shoot depicts the family of whiz kids as the The Royal Tenenbaums, and the article delves into their family mythos. Makes for an interesting read, and I love that Charlotte Ronson is playing Luke Wilson's part.

This article if for the people who loves, needs or work in the programming business, some time ago exists a new cool text editor and literally: "focuses on creating
an easy to use interface and features that aid in code development" (Editra site).

For many time i have use vim or drpython for coding and trying -recently- with eclipse and anjuta for the search of a new application which brings me more power, those 2 last apps are very good but have a high load and consumes a lot of resources. Editra is really easy and has a lot of features not included in many text editors, including: memos, version control system (git, bazaar, cvs, svn), auto-complete, auto-suggestion, etc.

Take a look and you will see a great tool for our work, don't be regret. Soon i will post some small tutorial for plug-in programming for this application, which -by the way- is fully written in python and wxwidgets.

Hans DERNSCWAM, 1553 yılında 60 yaşına ulaşmış bir gezgin ve araştırmacı. Öğrenme hırsıyla on üç yaşında tanışmış. Mali ve sosyal konumu bir hayli iyi olan Bohemyalı ailenin idealist bir çocuğu olarak sürdürüyor bilimsel çalışmalarını. Macaristan onun ikinci vatanı konumunda. Bu nedenle Türklere karşı oldukça önyargılı. 1553 yılında Kanuni Sultan Süleyman döneminde Pécs Piskoposu Anton Vrancia ve Macaristan’ın en ünlü prenslerinden olan Başkomutan Franz Zay ile birlikte İstanbul’a Kral 1. Ferdinand’ın yıllık vergisini ödemek ve bir takım görüşmeler yapmak üzere elçi olarak Viyana’dan yola çıkan grup arasında Dernscwam’da bulunmaktadır. Viyana’dan başlayıp daha sonra Amasya’ya kadar uzanacak olan yolculukları boyunca Dernscwam il, il köy, köy gezerek edindiği izlenimleri kaleme almıştır. "İstanbul ve Anadolu’ya Seyahat Günlüğü" adlı eseri ( Kültür Bakanlığı Yayınları/ 885, Dünya Edebiyatı Dizisi /5, Çeviren; Prof. Dr. Yaşar ÖNEN, 1992 ) daha sonraları o dönemin kültürel özelliklerinin anlaşılmasına olan katkıları nedeniyle önemli bir eser olarak kabul edilecektir. Kapalı çarşı ile ilgili izlenimleri kitaptan kısaltarak ve sadeleştirerek aktarıyorum;

Orada her türlü yabancı menşeli eşyayı bulur.

Haha, so I cam across this on Photoshelter and it made me laugh. Hahaha. Apparently Harper's Bazaar thought this was an amazing idea, and I agree. Haha! They got some dude and Tyra Banks to role play as the Obamas in their September issue and it looks awesome. I don't care what anyone says, Tyra is hot as hell and she can do whatever the hell she wants to do and def does what she wants better than those out their constantly ridiculing her. The two (Banks and model dude) look nothing like Michelle and Barack themselves, but a point is definitely made, if you're gonna be President and First Lady, why not also be FASHION! Haha. I love saying things like "FASHION" and "CATWALK" aloud. It's hilarious. People immediately become uncomfortable and awkward! And sometimes they RUN a little. hahaha. Sometimes I say it loudly while walking around Bedford Avenue/Williamsburg and all the "hip"-sters get all self conscious and shit and start to fix their unwashed hair and wipe their shiny faces..uber funny. Anyway, I have gone on a huge tangent.

Note: all presented here is a rough effort to illustrate the essence of business activities that hap

Note: all presented here is a rough effort to illustrate the essence of business activities that happens in Bazaar. Its not meant to be an accurate report for making economists happy. I want to illustrate the human situation of Bazaar. Please forgive and report inaccuracies.

Bazaar is the Iran’s traditional marketplace; it’s both a trading concept and an architectural space. It’s not simply an exotic place for trading or an old form of mall, business complex, or stock market, but all these elements can be found there. Bazaar is a religion and a political entity; it’s an elite society and a sect. It a social class, a stronghold of fanaticism, it’s a loud noise in Iran’s society, it is a state of mind.

Tehran Grand Bazaar is the world's largest bazaar. It has many functions that go beyond trading and warehousing. Inside Bazaar, you can see financers, brokers, banks, mullahs, mosques, charlatans, political figures and even branches of foreign businesses who felt in order to succeed in Iranians complex market, they need to have a foot in Bazaar. In its neighboring, you can see crumbling warehouses, illegal medicine and drug shops, pet stores, prostitutes and homeless drug addicts whom apparently did not get their share of the oil-powered, “import cheap, sell pricey” economy of Bazaar.

Toward North West of Bazaar is Iran’s justice department main building. Toward north east, the new built, Nazi style, pyramid shaped Parliament building that can easily hold the MPs of the former USSR and still have place for people who should clap for their sensible decisions.

Toward north, there is “Toop khaneh” square, an old, red-square style open area, housing the Iran’s ministry of IT & T. It is built over the ruins of a building made by Nazis before WWII for the same purpose. That German building built partly over the ruins of a Ghajar Palace.

We hear these days, intellectual debates on differences between Bazaar and Cathedral, and the advantage of the first model over the latter. Alas, these ideas are only good in design and engineering realms. In reality, the Bazaar itself is a grand cathedral, with a central nervous system more powerful and fast reacting than any cathedral ever seen before. Sit in a “Hojre” (room/shop) inside a corridor in Bazaar and news comes to you, unfiltered and faster than the IRNA (Iranian News Agency) site. In this cathedral, the religion is a fanatic sort of Shiaa Islam, the priest is the grand leader, the bread is gold, the wine is oil, and the worshippers are the Bazzaris, the medium to big business merchants who dance with the tunes of the government tricky regulations.

The particular reason why the Bazaar is so successful businesswise after the revolution is in the harmony it has with government. They are virtually immune from all tariffs, product quality and health related checks required for importing goods, they rarely pay a Rial for tax and their employees are usually underpaid, without written agreement in accordance to the Iran’s relatively socialist labor laws and have no insurance. (Sometimes thy have some insurance, but it’s paid less than the value of their real salaries.)

Of course, there is not a single line in Iran’s constitution that mentions such pristine privileges for a certain class of people, but their close relation to the insiders and their blind loyalty apparently made them the most favorite people for the ruling class. In case you were wondering who are those angry mob who come to Tehran’s Friday prayers and chant hate slogans against every government and person who has a sort of conflict of interest with Iran’s government or Keyhan newspaper, there you have it: a large number of the crowd are from Bazaar. Perhaps, being free from almost any auditing, taxation and regulations worth some angry shouting and flag burning each Friday.

Thanks to worldwide sanctions and internal restriction that together deprived Iranian buyers from quality goods, Bazaar’s business model - in general - is a straightforward one. If you have someone friendly with government officials that can give you an import permit, around 50000 USD or more (depending on the type of cargo, of course) and a translator who knows a little English, the rest is easy. Obtaining an economy class ticket of a cheap airline to mainland China, South Korea, or Hong Kong, ordering products custom-made for you by cheapest components and dubious quality / health standards, having them delivered to Iran and sell it with above 100% profit without almost any quality/health control supervision, tax, custom, advertising money will do the job. One last thing, sticking a big fake logo of a famous brand on your products is a plus.

Remember, Iranians, in absence of most American, Japanese, and EU major brands, are hungry buyers who are happy with every country of origin equal to or better than India. South Korea is the gold standard of quality here, German, Swiss, and Japan made products are almost a dream.

In the next post, I will try to cover some human aspect of the Baazari class, that was my main intention of writing this text.
