Whether you are moving into a new place or buying a new home, or just looking to spice things up in

Whether you are moving into a new place or buying a new home, or just looking to spice things up in your current home, you may be looking for new bathroom decorating ideas. Inspiration for a new design or fresh look is probably closer than you may think.

For renters, you are limited in what you can do. You will most likely need your landlord to grant you permission to make any changes too extreme to your residence. You can still find some simple bathroom decorating designs that are fresh and interesting. Inspiration for bathroom decorating ideas can come from the simplest of places. Browse through a few home magazines for ideas. You may be drawn by a particular color or combination of colors. For a fresh look to an old bathroom, homeowners have more options and your bathroom decorating ideas can be bigger. Along with home magazines, a take to the local home improvement stores to browse through the displays will inspire. You may find that a particular fixture or item will grab your eye and instill thoughts and ideas that had not previously crossed your mind. For those building a home from the ground up, your bathroom decorating ideas are unlimited. You have a blank canvas to work with, and you can make your bathroom as stylish, modern or as simple as you want. One great starting point for bathroom decorating ideas is finding the right tile. Tiles come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Chances are, you will find something you will fall in love with, and you can build your bathroom around that particular tile. If you have a rather large bathroom, you have room to add touches that cannot be found in smaller bathrooms. Furniture, such as a stand or towel rack that you simply love, and your bathroom decorating ideas can form around that piece. Craft stores are another inspiration spot. Many craft stores have ready made silk flower displays. You do not have to purchase one, just look for one with a mix of colors that is enormously pleasing to your eye and go from there. Some colors look great together, but you may never realise it until you see them side by side. For other bathroom decorating ideas, draw from friends and family. If someone you know has a bathroom you like, there is nothing wrong with you using that room as inspiration. You may not want to copy the look entirely, but you can use it to build on your own ideas. There are many great bathroom showrooms out there and all can provide you with accessories and ideas that will make your new bathroom unique.

The first time Kim and I went hut to hut skiing in the Alps (I LOVE saying that–the FIRST time

The first time Kim and I went hut to hut skiing in the Alps (I LOVE saying that--the FIRST time we did it. Cuz, you know, we did it more than once.) Anyway, the first time we did the Haute Route, with Kim's Dad and her brother Daniel, we took a helicopter up from the top of Alagna to the saddle of Monte Rosa, and skied the Grenz Glazier down into Zermatt. Then we took the Tram up from Zermatt, and skied down left, off piste, around the edge of the Matterhorn, and up the valley below the north face. We skinned up the valley floor for a few hours, turned sharp right, and climbed almost straight up onto the slope across the valley from the Matterhorn, to the Schonbiel hut.

When people mention huts in the Alps, don't be lulled into thinking they are the same everywhere. Many of these huts are a hundred years old, made of stone (most are made of stone), and, um, they tend to smell like it. Italian huts are a bit primitive and gross. French huts are disgusting. Austrian huts are like hotels.

This was an Italian hut. We slept in a huge bunk room filled with fellow travelers--that is, lots of stinky men who had been hiking all day, maybe all week, in some cases all month. In fact, maybe all their lives.

Whatever. French and Italian huts don't have bathrooms in the hut, they have outhouses, usually a short walk from the main building.

So here's where I mention that these huts are generally high on a mountain, often right on the edge of a cliff. In this case, we were high on a mountain, right on the edge of a cliff, across a glacial valley from the Matterhorn. Which is spectacular to look at, but can be a bit sketchy to walk around on. In the dark. On the icy ground. Next to a cliff.

But when you gotta go, you gotta go. I got up early (not that I was sleeping--seriously, 30 stinky, snoring men in a bunkroom), and made my way by headlamp down the stairs, out the door, and along the frozen path to the outhouse, situated literally on the edge of the cliff. This is an outhouse where you just have to leave the door open while you do your business, because the view of the Matterhorn across the moraine might be the best outhouse view in the world. World's Most Scenic Outhouse.

Now I'm not sure if was clumsy because my legs hadn't had blood for a while, since I lingered in the World's Most Scenic Outhouse admiring the view, or if I am just clumsy by nature (I guess it can be both, it's probably both), but when I finally tired of the view, and started to make my way back to the hut, wearing just socks, I slipped on a particularly sketchy patch of path, both feet flying straight out in front of me, and I landed flat on my back, my body from my tailbone to the top of my head thudding to the ice.

Whoooooof, went the air in my lungs. Not sure how long it took to get any air back in there. But I couldn't breathe, I couldn't speak, and I couldn't move, for fear that I would slide right off the edge of the cliff.

So I just laid there for a while.

After a time, a nice British woman came out to use the loo, and saw me. "Are you okay" she asked?

Erp! Ack. Still not getting a full breath.

Which meant, "Please don't go tell my wife that I've fallen on the ice on the way back from the outhouse, and that I can't get up."

That's not how she heard it. Damn the British.

Guest blogger Mike Conlon, managing director of Twyford Bathrooms, explains why he thinks it is impo

Guest blogger Mike Conlon, managing director of Twyford Bathrooms, explains why he thinks it is important to defend design rights.

Since it began in 1850, Twyford Bathrooms has been renowned for its expertise and innovation. Twyford Bathrooms has been first to unveil a number of industry defining products including the Doc M Suite, the first truly rimless toilet which caters to the needs of the mobility impaired, and Galerie Flushwise, the first UK water saving toilet.

Each of these products demonstrates design that has helped to move the toilet manufacturing industry forward. Yet good design is not just about a great aesthetic; it is also about functionality and innovating how a product works, thereby making the product more valuable to the end user.

We feel strongly that Twyford should protect the design rights on its products. It is important because we invest an enormous amount of money in designing, developing, testing and building new products. We have teams of dedicated experts, including some of the best in Europe, in design, technical development and production. This type of research and development calls for a high investment.

Investment

In addition, our capital expenditure in creating tools and models is a significant part of our overall investment because we understand the importance of offering unique features and benefits to our customers. Time and money is also spent on testing the concepts, often with customers, to ensure they fulfill every stringent requirement, both legally and otherwise.

This considerable investment before a product reaches the marketplace is very expensive and often takes a number of years to recoup.

The bathroom industry generally faces a key problem with copying, and we take any infringement of our design rights or patents seriously because of the high level of investment and support we have devoted to the product throughout its development.

Manufacturers who simply copy a competitor's designs do not invest in innovation and as such do not invest in the industry.

Customers need to be aware that accepting poor imitation copies of products not only harms the financial future of innovative reputable companies but is not cost effective in the long run.

Copied products do not always have the same functionality as the original as the copiers do not have the in-depth knowledge and expertise that the bona fide designer of the product will have built up during the design process.

So, while a copy ensures that the shape of the product is the same, it is likely that some key aspects that make the functionality first rate will have been missed.

UK standards

Copiers are often not cognisant that certain non-aesthetic design details are also key to achieving the required UK standards and so buyers may be blissfully unaware that the poor imitation fails to fulfill the requisite standards for their particular project.

Reputable manufacturers invest substantial amounts of time and money into the design and testing of their products to make sure that they conform to stringent regulations. True innovation and great design takes expert knowledge of the industry, high, consistent investment and quality production and support.

Manufacturers can and should protect themselves against copies of their products infiltrating the market by ensuring their intellectual property rights are properly recorded and defended through the courts if necessary.

Customers can help reputable manufacturers by supporting those who drive product improvements and product change for the good of the end user.

It may just be me, but I suspect I’m not the only one finding it painful to watch or read abou

It may just be me, but I suspect I'm not the only one finding it painful to watch or read about bathroom makeovers these days, says guest blogger Rob Jull, managing director of RAK Ceramics UK.

However, besides the tragic presenters and almost comically inept "real"" home owners, the thing that really riles me is the frequency with which sanitaryware is selected willy-nilly, with seemingly no thought or attention paid to quality or consistency or design.

Now I'm all for freedom of expression, individuality and personal choice but it's frustrating that none of the so-called "experts" ever point out the potential folly of mixing and matching sanitaryware from different suppliers.

They are quick to promote it as a great money-saving tip - hunting around for one-off bargains is often the name of the game - but they never mention the possibility that the results may be a complete disaster.

Mix and match

The thinking behind mixing and matching sanitaryware is not just money orientated but also design-led. Interiors experts like the idea of buying baths, WCs and basins from different suppliers, presumably with each product chosen for their individual appeal.

Quite besides the fact that this method can result in a bathroom that's more chaotic than chic if you don't have a natural eye for design, there is also the issue of colour consistency. Although most sanitaryware is white today, white is not a uniform shade - there are hundreds of varieties. Then there are differences within the finish. The types and thickness of glaze applied to sanitaryware will affect the colour and lustre of the finish.

I represent one of the best factories in the world in terms of consistent high quality colour and finish, so I do know something about this subject. To achieve a precision match it's best to buy not only from the same manufacturer but preferably from the same range! Only by buying a complete suite from the same collection can you achieve total colour consistency that's discernible to the naked eye. This may sound overly fussy, but the amounts people are prepared to spend on their bathroom renovations means they deserve the best.

Colour consistency also becomes a more important factor when a bathroom is smaller, and the sanitaryware is located in very close proximity whereby the differences will be more noticeable.

Mixing and matching sanitaryware doesn't just cause colour inconsistencies. The uniformity of the overall space can easily be knocked off balance by a clashing piece that neither coordinates nor complements the rest of the 'suite'. I'm not saying that an unusual basin or statement-making bath can't look fantastic, but the real trouble arises when homeowners try to have all three main sanitaryware pieces in dramatically different styles.

The focus

In my experience, if you want to go down a more selective route you need to decide which item of sanitaryware you want to use to create the focus, and the other two (or three or four if you have a bidet or his-n-hers basins) should be from the same collection so that they match beautifully and blend seamlessly into the design. This is especially true if the homeowner is seeking a modern, minimalist design whereby sleek, pared down coordinating sanitaryware is undoubtedly the only way forward.

For the specifier or retailer, taking a mix and match approach has more obvious issues. Extra delivery costs, difficulties with delivery on-site at the same time and the paperwork involved are just some of the difficulties to be faced, without even thinking about the trauma of trying to get damaged goods replaced. Buying from one outlet with a single order is undoubtedly far less stressful all round. To those "interiors gurus" that are claiming the suite is dead my only reply is: long live the suite!

As the UK’s shower enclosure market has expanded, overseas manufacturers have introduced a num

As the UK's shower enclosure market has expanded, overseas manufacturers have introduced a number of new entry-level products. But imported products can often fail to deliver, says guest blogger Charlie Wallis, marketing manager at Coram Showers.

There are stark differences between UK designed and manufactured shower enclosures and imported ones. The most crucial one is that, as these imported products are being distributed right across the world, they are designed with a 'one size fits all' approach.

While there are many sectors in which imported products that are distributed internationally perform extremely well, the needs of the shower enclosure market in the UK are too unique to be addressed properly by a mass produced product for worldwide consumption.

Poor design

Poor design has made it impossible for the majority of these imported products to provide the ease of installation, high performance operation, contemporary design and watertight finish that the UK market has come to expect. In fact, once they are installed, it has been found that these enclosures are prone to leaking and offer a far less enjoyable showering experience than enclosures from UK manufacturers.
Watertightness is a real issue in the UK, whereas, abroad, it is not considered to be too much of a problem. Primarily, this is because, in the UK, the majority of bathroom floors are constructed using timber and are covered with lino or carpet, which makes them particularly vulnerable to damage, caused by leaks. In many other countries, however, floors are often built using concrete and finished with tiles, so leaking shower environments are not considered a nuisance.

Innovative Solutions

When it comes to installation, architects, designers and specifiers in the UK are continually looking that improve efficiency and speed up time on-site to control build costs.

To provide a solution, UK shower enclosure manufacturers have made it a priority to keep aware of the needs of housebuilders, installers and consumers in this country to ensure they develop effective solutions that specifically address the issues that concern them. As a result, a number of innovative shower enclosure designs have emerged, which are stylish, simple to install and guarantee complete watertightness.

As more shower enclosures are installed across the UK than ever before and more installers, as well as housebuilders and consumers, become dissatisfied with these imported, purely aesthetic designs, the demand for UK designed and manufactured products is set to rise. Importantly, however, UK based market leading shower enclosure manufacturers must continue to develop new product solutions that improve standards and performance, and fully satisfy the specific needs of housebuilders, installers, consumers and retailers in the UK.

Guest blogger David Osborne, managing director of shower and wetroom specialists Roman, appraises the rise and rise of the wetroom.

Everybody's talking about wetrooms and walk-ins, but will wetrooms ever become mainstream? Is it the end for baths? There is so much hype about these issues, but what is the reality and how is the market changing?

Four years ago Roman launched a range of wetroom panels to some bemusement among retailers and competitors alike. Wetroom tanking systems were claimed to be complicated and difficult to understand, yet four years later we are enjoying successful sales from our wetroom panels and have re-launched an improved version of our wetroom tanking system, Roman Shield, to maintain the 'one-stop-shop' approach.

Wetrooms offer the benefit that they are inclusive of all user groups. They are a product which is modern and stylish, but do not assume full mobility on the part of the user. We have an ageing population in the UK, while the Department for Work and Pensions states that 10 million people are registered disabled, of whom 6.4 million have mobility problems.

Stepping up

These users can often find stepping up into a standard-height shower tray or a bath extremely difficult. Similarly, handles and doors can be very awkward for arthritis sufferers. Wetrooms eliminate the step up as well as abolishing problematic doors and handles yet have none of the stigma that sometimes accompanies products traditionally designed for the less able market - their design is completely inclusive.

Wetrooms can also be the ideal solution for any space. For the larger bathroom you can install an expansive 1200mm wetroom linear panel to create a truly fabulous, spa-like feeling of luxury. For the smallest bathroom you can simply install a glass panel to act as a water deflector, taking up far less space than the average shower enclosure. Alternatively, you can tank out the entire room and install a valve, keeping the room as a complete wet-area.

This can be the ideal solution for older housing stock which traditionally has only one bathroom. You can convert a small space into an additional, or en-suite bathroom. This then helps the property compete with modern, new-build housing which can have anything up to four or five bathrooms for the family home.

The 'Look'

Some people who are still wary of wetrooms but want 'the look' are now opting for a walk-in style enclosure, which simulates the wetroom feel but offers more enclosed showering whilst still on a tray. A popular solution is to replace the bath with a larger, bath replacement-style enclosure. However, this tends to be in the larger family home where there are multiple bathrooms.

In one-bathroom properties, the bath is often still paramount. Our own research shows that 65% of people within the UK are still having to shower over a bath. The bath still has a role to play - particularly in the family home. But where houses have more than one bathroom, we are seeing baths ripped out in favour of additional showering facilities.

Showering is now the fast and modern way to clean. Our research shows that 78% of people in the UK opt to shower on a daily basis rather than bathe. So the average UK home now has two or even three showering facilities, with just one bath.

So, will wetrooms become mainstream? They are in fact already a key element of showering. Perhaps we should be asking for how much longer the bath will retain a major role in the bathroom!

This could also have been titled, "Weekend at Bruce Wayne's....NOT"! I may still change it. Give me time...

This weekend was spent as all weekends without the family should, drinking, watching TV, and cleaning out my bathroom sink. Yes, I spent the better part of a hour and a half cleaning out a clog under my bathroom sink. For that, I am accomplished. Love me, and the gooey ickyness that is my bathroom. All I could think of as I was putting the pipes back under the sink was..."Did I do THAT????"

I also took out the mower and laid waste to my lawn. It is now clean and new again. We no longer have the appearance of a house that used to have a car on blocks has. For that, I am accomplished.

I also drank a LOT of beer. For that, I cannot feel my face. Yet, I am accomplished.

I, however, did NOT get to see "The Dark Knight". Which, if you hadn't heard, made over 1.7 Billion Dollars in one weekend, cured cancer, and lowered gas prices to 63 cents per gallon. Yes, It's that good, and I missed it. I will see it later this week, when it will only take 7 hours in line to get into the theater.

In teh meantime. Ron Olson and Brett did see "The Dark Knight", they got into the spirit by dressing up. They are so much fun as you can see below.

You know how sometimes, you'll be just standing there, talking to someone, maybe about why they're wrong for thinking Juno was a crass and crude representation of high school life, and you get that "not so fresh" feeling in your gut, a bit queasy, a bit uneasy, things piling up, shifting around, and maybe a bead of sweat forms on your forehead?

In the history of humanity, has this EVER happened in a convenient place? Like, in my bedroom, while watching tv or reading a book, while my beautiful bidet-toilet waits in the next room? No, it's always airport bathrooms, or you're on a train, or even at a very new friend's house for a bbq.

This happens to me (not EXACTLY like this, not ALWAYS talking to someone about Juno) about once a quarter. That is, maybe 4 time a year. I haven't always had this problem. Just as long as I can remember.

One time this happened in Barcelona. Scheduled to present to about a hundred sweaty Europeans about some Identity Management software, I was in the speaker ready room when that "not so fresh" feeling hit me, letting me know that I was anything but ready.

I spent the next hour on the floor of a public restroom stall, doing the hokey pokey, "not so freshness" coming from both north and south poles. I had no Euro cell phone, so I couldn't call a replacement speaker. I managed to pull myself together and walk into the presentation room with 30 seconds to spare. A room overflowing with conference goers, no moving air, and a spotlight highlighting every bead of sweat on my face. I almost fainted several times, and spent the rest of the afternoon passed out in my hotel room tub.

But last night, I was at the company picnic. Not at the company office, where I already don't like the bathroom, but at a city park. In the middle of ranting about why Aaron's take on Juno was so completely out of touch and indefensible, I had to suddenly stop, mid-sentence, and say "um, I have to go."

People have tried to think up unique tortures for me, like someone in the next stall offering to share their fries and burger with me en medias rex. This was much worse. City park bathroom, bare metal toilet, puddle of water on the floor. And me having to do the hokey pokey, the big 180, all while sweating so much I could have wrung out my shirt. And when I flushed, the whooshing water would cool off my nether ye, and briefly super-cool the metal seat, pretty much to super-collider temperatures. Which actually felt a little nice, considering the sweat. Rinse, repeat.

Does this happen to you? Is it just me? It is just me, isn't it? DAMN it!

Ya'll know how the rest of it goes, right?

The whole weekend I was in Atlin, and half of this week, I was going around with only one earring. It wasn't on purpose, it's just that I got interrupted midway through putting my earrings in and haven't been able to finish the job.

Y'see, I rarely change my earrings. Michael gave me a pair of gold nugget earrings as a wedding gift, and I practically never take them out. But I wore some dangly earrings to the YWIM Garden Party a few weeks back. Friday morning, I was just getting around to putting the gold nuggets back in.

I was in my PJs and for some reason I didn't have my glasses on and also had not yet put my contacts in. I don't know why I was putting my earrings in while blind as a bat; my only excuse is that things aren't always logical in the early hours of morning. I leaned over to get a closer look at the mirror (because I was blind as a bat and have to be within 5 centimetres of the mirror in order to see anything) and in the process dropped the second earring. I didn't know where it had gone. I didn't hear the "ping" of the small piece of precious metal hitting the counter or the floor. I decided I'd better wash my hands so that I could put on my contact lenses so that I could look for my earring.

No sooner did I put my hands under the running water when I felt a little scratch at my wrist and heard "ping".

"Uh-oh", I thought. I squinted. Things came into a sort of fuzzy focus just as my earring got swept under the sink stopper and down the drain. (If you haven't figured it out already, the darn thing had fallen into the cuff of my PJs. Before falling into the sink, that is.)

I shut the water off quickly and put in my contact lenses, then went into the bedroom and woke a still-slumbering Michael, telling him what had happened. He got right on the earring rescue mission while I got ready for work.

It might help to have a visual; here's what our downstairs bathroom looks like. Well, what it looked like before we moved in and piled all our crap onto the counters (because there is no shelving behind that there mirror).

[caption id="attachment_214" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Our bathroom"][/caption]

It's pretty, isn't it? It's also pretty impractical. The bathroom renovation was done by the last owners, shortly before listing the house. I hate having to clean around the raised bowl. I hate that the faucet always comes loose and then we have to crawl under the counters to re-tighten the bolt. I hate that the mechanism for working the drain stopper never works, no matter what we do to it, and the workings of it just get in the way of stuff going down, which means the sink clogs up easily. And I hate that there's nowhere close to the mirror to keep my toiletries.

Michael opened the doors below the sink to get to the U-Bend and I remembered that when I'd first moved in, there had been a leak, which I'd fixed using plumber's tape. In order to get the cap off the bottom of the pipe, Michael first had to fight through several layers of sticky material. He managed. No luck finding the earring, though. He fought with more plumber's tape and took off the whole U-bend. Still no luck. He unscrewed the top of the drain plug and shone a light down the drain. Aha! We could see the little earring, nestled in some truly disgusting drain gunk, totally out of reach. He got a piece of wire and started pulling up a stinkload of grossness, but the earring remained elusive. In fact, we couldn't see it anymore. Michael figured it must've fallen into the side hole where the lever for the plug mechanism comes through. So he loosened all the bolts or whatever seemed necessary and tried lifting the sink up and off the counter. A few counter tiles came up with it. Damn.

After that, he had to get Jade out of bed and start getting ready for our trip to Atlin. And we haven't gotten back to the rescue mission yet. So there my earring still lies, in an unusable sink with no drain attached. I've been washing my hands in the shower stall and brushing my teeth upstairs.

Tim is now suddenly interested in renovating the bathroom. While I would love to get rid of this stupid set-up, we've already got a whole lotta renos going on. And Tim's talking about replacing the entire vanity so we have less counter-space to clutter up. (I don't think that's the solution, Tim.) But we're going to have to fix the sink, anyway, so something has to be done in there.

All this because of one little gold nugget. Oh, and that little thing called gravity.

For the record, I'm not wearing any earrings now.

WD Bathrooms have recently introduced another efficient way to purchase bathroom products online. Li

WD Bathrooms have recently introduced another efficient way to purchase bathroom products online. Listening to general concerns about entering personal credit card details online, WD Bathrooms have added Paypal to their list of payment methods. This is becoming a growing trend in all different online websites.

Although WD Bathrooms are a secure internet shopping site many people feel quite apprehensive about giving their details. Issues concerning identity theft etc are growing concerns for the UK. It can be difficult for people to trust new websites if it is unfamiliar territory.

If you are more internet savvy and use sites such as Ebay, you may already have existing accounts, making it very convenient for you. Paypal differs from traditional payment methods as it doesn’t require you to expose personal credit card details. When purchasing bathroom products you can simply enter your login and password details which will transfer you through to your account. If you are contemplating a brand new bathroom you may be purchasing various numbers of items, which may be quite costly. Effectively paypal is an online account which stores money for you until needed. Paypal ensures the merchant will never see any credit card numbers. Paypal is also convenient if you do not have an online bank account. Paypal will save you constantly visiting cash machines as you can track all transactions online.

If you a regular purchase online, paypal will stop you constantly struggling to find that credit card every time you want to buy something (we all know how frustrating it can be!). Paypal online enables you to purchase your bathroom products whilst efficiently transferring money with just your log in and password details.

If you prefer the traditional method of purchasing then you can purchase online with various credit cards, this isn’t a problem. If you do prefer not to type card details online then paypal is perfect for you. Just simply browse online and if you see a suitable product then use paypal to purchase online.

Advantages of Paypal

*The following is an email I wrote in May while visiting my friend Lee who had been teaching English

*The following is an email I wrote in May while visiting my friend Lee who had been teaching English to elementary school students in Wuhan China for the school year.

Well, I thought I wasn’t going to write about this, but I've concluded that you can't really understand this trip to China if you don't know about the toilet situation in China. Think of everything you know about toilets and now forget it all. Let's get this out of the way first: toilet seats-they don’t have them. My friend Lee (whose apartment I was staying at) actually had one until it shattered under my ass the second day of using it. Who knew toilet seats could shatter so easily? I guess they don’t expect people to actually use them much so they aren’t very durable. The shattering of the seat led to the other problem we're still arguing about. Just what happened, I can't be sure, but Lee thinks I must have knocked some of the shattered toilet seat bits into the toilet which then clogged the toilet. I think the problem is that in every public restroom I’ve been in they have signs that say "don’t put the toilet paper in the toilet". Um, isn’t that where it goes? Isn’t that why it’s called toilet paper? I've probably been clogging toilets across China just because I can't handle dropping the TP in the garbage can that may or may not be in the stall instead of in the toilet where I think it belongs. Once we clogged Lee’s toilet I checked down the hallway in the empty half finished apartments for a flushing toilet (Lee’s apartment is in the top of an elementary school building so it is mostly deserted at night). None have seats of course since Lee has stolen them after he breaks each successive one. But four down has been flushing so it’s our makeshift outhouse. The door doesn’t latch and a thick layer of dust and dried bugs coat most everything. The school did send someone to plunge our toilet. There was a lot of banging and confused looks and then the man said "fixed" as he trotted out of the apartment tracking toilet water all over the entry way and making a swimming pool out of the bathroom floor. The teacher at school scolded us to not "stick foreign objects in the toilets" I think she meant "foreigners shouldn't stick anything in the toilet" since I never knew toilet paper was a foreign object for a toilet. And for all that it has stopped working again.

School bathrooms are in a category all on their own: A trough runs along the ground with only a couple drains spaced out in it with open stalls over the trough. So now you're squatting over a channel watching other people's excretions float by with the high probability of a teacher or an elementary student similarly squatting across the way. In the hallway i enjoy being mobbed with jubilant "hello Sarah"-s, but in the bathroom I don't have a free hand to wave back... Is it any wonder why I'm actively courting dehydration in the 100 degree heat?

Public restrooms are a step up and by a "step up" I mean realistic-that-i-will-actually-use-them. There hardly ever is toilet paper and even rarer are actual seats. They're just holes in the ground. What's more shocking is that I consider the presence of one or the other an occasion to dance in the bathroom. A dance that may or may not result in my foot being squeegeed by the bathroom attendant mopping up the floor/toilets on the floor. Restaurants give out packs of tissues instead of the hassle of having separate napkins, paper towels, tissues or toilet paper anywhere on the premise. Which is great since tissues when wet normally dissolve and leave little bits of paper on whatever you choose to be wiping with them (case in point I had tissue stuck to my lip after lunch today). I brought these little travel bathroom packs that have TP, a hand wipe and a sanitary toilet cover; I always laugh at the seat cover since it's useless without a seat.

I never before questioned the legitimacy of letting the person waiting in line in the bathroom go first. But here people just walk in and pick a door and jostle their way into an open one, men and women alike since many bathrooms are co-ed. (Though not all as Lee’s sister Katy discovered the hard way after getting strange looks using the pit in the men's room next to the urinal.) I got passed over many times as I politely waited my turn until I realized it was never going to come. So yes, now I fight for my right to balance and squat over a pit while holding my clothing away from where the last person missed. I was so proud of myself the first time I went, but my pride was short lived as the next bathroom had a door that wouldn't shut so I had to try to hold the door while balancing and holding my clothes at the same time. I don't know how to say "can you hold the door while I go?" And I have a feeling that any person I asked would just take the stall from me.

People's houses are hit or miss as well. We went to someone's apartment where they had a pit in their house. Which I would have considered trying until I realized that floor length frosted glass windows are essentially see through when lit from behind. One step at a time here-I'm just not yet ready to pee while on display.
