Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten – each a powerful force of nature in his own right – have done more in recent decades to redefine the electric bass and push the limits of its potential than any other musician alive today. When these three titans – collectively known as S.M.V. – converge on the low frequencies, the results are no less than earth shaking. Thunder (HUCD 3163), their debut collaboration set for release on Heads Up International on August 12, 2008, is a high-energy phenomenon whose impact is guaranteed to resonate throughout every corner of the jazz world.

More than just a musical collaboration, Thunder was an opportunity for all three musicians to get to know and understand each other on a newer and much deeper level. “It’s not until you really work intimately with another musician that you really find out what’s going on with that person,” says Clarke.

Sunday Nadia and I ran the 28th annual "Run Your Bass Off" 10 kilometer road race in Crystal Falls, Michigan. The race is part of the Bass Festival held at Runkle Lake. We were unsure of going when we got up Sunday morning as it was 50 degrees F and drizzling. We powered through however and got the kids up and packed and drove the 15 miles to the other side of Iron County. We dropped the boys off with our good friend's the Bonetti family and dropped Ocean of at my aunt Ione's home in Crystal Falls. It was great! We felt like we were on a date with no kids. As you can see, I was a bit more excited about running in the cool weather than Nadia.

Most of the 279 present were running the shorter "Half Bass" or 5 kilometer run/walk. Crystal Falls should be renamed Crystal Hills as there were killer hills throughout the race. There were some nice scenic spots as we ran by the Paint River. Nadia and I ran together as it was a rare opportunity for us to do something together sans offspring. Nadia started off slow but then got her second wind and we passed some runners. There was a large hill however at the 4 mile mark that took the wind out of her sails and she slowed a bit. In the last 2 miles she recovered and we finished strong together at 1 hour and 2 minutes. We didn't win but that wasn't the point. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and got out and did some exercise.

OK, if you flyfish Central Oregon, you know that Davis Lake is a shadow of its former self. The trout are scarce because illegally introduced largemouth bass feed upon the young trout. If you fish Davis Lake in mid June, I am told you can sling sizeable bunny Leech patterns to redds and hook into fairly substantial bass (5-10#). I cannot personally vouch for that, but I have seen 5-10# bass cruising amongst the reeds and at the base of the lava dam.

Recently, a friend of mine was chasing the elusive rainbow trout on Davis L. working the inlet channel. His family was taking a nearby nature walk at the edges of the lake when they encountered a duckling that appeared to be in need of assistance back to the water. The family, in a moment of setting nature back into balance, placed the little duckling back into the water. All was right with the duckling as it kicked away...a pleasant moment, I am sure.

The significance of this, to the flyfisher, is the consideration of a duckling pattern. A giant, largemouth bass came from the depths and rose up to engulf the duckling. The family helplessly watched as the duckling disappeared into the large bucket mouth. So dust off those rubber duckies or something similar. Just kidding; well at least about the rubber duckie part. Ok, ok, forget the duckling pattern...but it is, to me, fascinating how predatory fish can be.

Jannick Top

Soleil d'Ork (2001)

http://www.mediafire.com/?aymn2udnzjw

Solo compilation from the legendary bass player and co-composer of Magma collecting the material he recorded between 1974-80. Jannick was a member of Magma during their best years (from Mekanik through Üdü Wüdü) and his approach to the bass was arguably the defining characteristic of the band (and of Zeuhl in general), so if you've heard Magma you probably know what to expect here. There's even a cover of "De Futura" from Üdü Wüdü (with a drum machine instead of Christian Vander, hah), an excellent unreleased Magma song "Mekanik Machine", and a reworking of "Soleil d'Ork" also from Üdü Wüdü. Jannick's bass here is as nasty as it ever was, maybe even moreso than his days in Magma. Sound quality and production values vary a bit from song to song due to the nature of the compilation, but nothing too drastic. The album ends on a surprisingly dull note with the more subdued "Glas" but other than that it's solid Zeuhl all the way.

If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! -Another Brick in the Wall (Pt.2)

Pink Floyd surfaced about during the psychedelic 60's. Although starting in the hippie scene they quickly began to mature in their music style. Such a style of rock that has caused the name Pink Floyd to become known unto every generation to date. Only a few bands have been able to stay in the minds of generations; such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, U2, Nirvana. The overall intoxicating sound of this killer band makes it one of my most favourite bands of all time.

[caption id="attachment_117" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Seen this icon before?"][/caption]

Pink Floyd developed a sound of rock that goes beyond the genre. Rock is defined by guitar shedding, screaming vocalists, and giant most pits. Such a song as this is the complete opposite! Using instruments other than the basic guitars and drums is unheard of by the general public! "Us and Them" is the perfect example of the uniqueness Pink Floyd has brought to the table.

The usage of sounds in a song isn't seen very often today. Mostly due to the fact that many artist fail to pair up instruments and noises in an attractable format. The noises I am referring to are most anything. A cash register, water drops, and ticking clocks for example. Using it to the fullest extent is determined by how well it is melted with the song. "Time" does just that with clocks in the intro quickly developing into esquesite melody of this rock masterpiece.

In all honesty, this is barely even considered rock in my mind. The absence of a 6-string guitar rocking out at full blast alongside of a killer vocalist isn't rock in most minds. Instead of the played out rock song, this is completely different...a female soul singer who seems to be pouring out her soul into this truely beautiful symphony called "Great Gig in the Sky". The changing this song to seem more "rock" would be an injustice to Pink Floyd and music all together. This song doesn't need lyrics...the power of this song allows you to interpret anyway you want.

The epidemy of Pink Floyd is this very song called "One Slip". Undoubtfully, this is my favourite for my own reasons. The intro screams climatic build-up. Every part of this song is raveled together to bring out one of my favourite rock songs ever. The bass, guitar, drums, vocals, and electronics is a marvel of perfection...the lyrics illustrate what can be related to any person. Not much else to be said about perfection.

Gabor Szabo - Keep Smilin'. This song is crazy good. So soulful. More proof the 70s were the best era ever in music. Amazing blend of drums, percussion, analog synths, bass, horns, jazz guitar, etc. When people made music with full bands. Reminiscent to me of some Arthur Verocai like his song Bis.

The LP that spawned this song is panned by critics but was the Hungarian-born guitarist's most significant album on soul radio and remains a favorite of many soul/ jazz fans. Instead of judging this song and the album from which it came to classic jazz pieces, both should be judged for what the producer and artist were trying to do, which was to make a European jazz guitarist palatable to urban/ soul audiences, which they succeeded in doing.

I had a dream during a nap. Immideiately prior to this nap, my roommate, a violist, came home talking about how excited he was to have his viola back from the shop. He talked about how they had removed scratches and re-adjusted his bridge. Then I went so sleep. I dreamt this exact scene over again, except this time, when he returned home with his viola, he also had my string bass with him. He had apparently over heard me talking about how cool it would be to get a low C extension. So he took the liberty of taking it in to the shop and getting one installed. This is quite interesting, considering that I had just gotten back from playing the bass, and had my bass with me. Had I thought it through, I would have realized this problem. I was half excited, and half panicked about how on earth I could possibly pay him back as these are very expensive. A little part of me wanted to ask him to pay for part of it, considering that he didn't ask me, but I dismissed that idea because I knew he was lacking money, just as I was, so I scrambled some way to come up with several thousand dollars to pay him back.

Ok, one of the blessings and curses we have in this profession is the opportunity to experience info

Ok, one of the blessings and curses we have in this profession is the opportunity to experience information from those who have gone before us. Tonight was no exception. I was at a master-class tonight with several of my colleagues. It was a public master-class, which means the Merolini, are seated in the front row and 4-5 of us sing and are critiqued in a hall full of people...not an easy thing to experience. Tonight was a parade of baritones and basses, which makes sense since our class was with world-renowned bass Eric Halfvarson. If you have never heard him sing, get up, find a recording that he is on, or a video on-line, and listen...he has a voice like none that you have ever heard before.

Well, Mr. H has this technique that he has dubbed the "Wide-mouthed Frog". Not only did he use this in the master-class, but he uses it in our private lessons with him as well. My first lesson with him i was taken aback by this just plain weird idea. Then, by lesson number two, I was slightly more convinced, and after tonight, I am a believer, for the most part. Basically, the idea is that in order to sing so people understand you, you must actually open your mouth. CONCEPT!!! I mean, when you put it on paper like that, it makes perfect sense. Now, something that you have to remember is, we don't all have freaky stretch mouth/face like the originator of the WMF, so I feel like many of us singers approached this with the idea that we had to imitate, or stretch our mouths as wide as he does. Well, this is not the idea at all, as he stated tonight. So many people are into imitating, and not actually feeling what is right for them. Basically his point is...

OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND SING!!!

Go figure. His class tonight was riveting, and I thought of my friend Ubiquitous Hobbit, when the master of the WMF kept bringing up botox-face technique...hilarity!!! I said, puhscuse me? I giggled out loud! This technique is when, singing in any language, you go to that neutral face that makes a generic vowel, and you sing no real shape...hahahaha!!! SOOOOO TRUE!!! I am guilty of this on many occasions.

Ok, so, the reason I am now a believer is the fact that he worked with 4 of our bass/baritones. Talk about sausage fest...AMAZING!!! This was just one amazing voice after another. The thing that each of them had in common was the need for a more pronounced language. My friend Boyscout Baribass sang the Catalogue Aria from Don Giovanni. It was fabulous. Now, Boyscout is a talent that is unique. He is so intense and smart. Well, when Mr. H was working with him and Boyscout was singing at Mr. H and kind of adjusting his vowels to what Mr. H was telling him, it was an amazing experience. It was like watching resonance being created. VoceLaVixen also got in on the action. She marched herself up to the front and sat in a chair, with her fabulous, new patent-leather booties, I might add, and Boyscout sang to her. It was literally a transformation. He was relaxed and singing the words...simply ermerzerng!! There were many other amazing performances tonight, and breakthroughs made and many more to come. This is just one reason that I will continue to live for art!!

I’m not really a concert girl. I don’t dig going

Actually, Philadelphia, it means a lot.

I'm not really a concert girl. I don't dig going to The Kyber and getting wasted to bands that just come off sounding like noise. Plus it really ruins the elastic in my skinny jeans when I start sweating too much. Really. Or knowing my luck, some 230 pound oaf kicks me in the ankle as he throws his arms above his head and staggers forward in a half-drunk leap screaming 'Yeahhhhhh!!!' Thus, permanently disabling me and my hawwt heeled look. Ugh.

My music exploration is typically an online experience, discovering new groups through music blogs. Minimizes my interaction with groupies. Honestly, I can't say that the Philly music scene promotes itself as much as it should.

This city has a penchant for undervaluing talent!
Which is why they all leave, right?

But then there is Philly Rising, an open mic night every Monday at World Cafe Live. I went a few months ago. O. My. Phucking. G!! Great music gives me that light-headed, heart-beating-out-of-my-chest sort of pleasure. Ah, Bojibian.

Pronounced bo-JIB-ee-an, these guys are brutal. Beautifully untamed. When I first saw them, they took the stage in sunglasses; like, 'Hey we don't take ourselves too seriously...' but then proceeded to seriously rock out. The band consists of Stephen Lorek, Niles Weiss, James Scullion and Dylan Mulcahy. They pull off style and talent. Phucking down-right panache.

I won't even mention how young they are because I'm sick of how every youthful music act has to be some surprise... I mean really, how many geezers do you know who still have passion? Life is draining, man. SO counteracting my extremely jaded nature, I listen to Bojibian songs that are light, fun, LOUD, upbeat. That's the best way I can say it, as I've never been one for categorizing music, and Bojibian won't cage themselves in either:

Stylistically, the group draws from many different influences, at times sounding like some sort of post-modern mash-up of pop, post-punk, classic rock, post-grunge, Southern rock, and arena rock…or something like that.

So.

This Saturday.

Go to World Cafe Live.

Bojibian will be on at 9 pm. They will also be selling their debut album which they have been working on furtively for the past 2 months. Commendable for a band that's only been together since the beginning of this year!

HEAR THEM on Myspace. My fav? Hallway. Although Upstroke and Call Me In The Morning have been stuck in my head lately

By Terri MacKinnon

We recently spent time in the beautiful outdoors camping and fishing in the amazing Algonquin Park. Its breathtaking lakes made for an incredible adventure. For those of you that are not familiar with Algonquin here is the official info on the park with some links.

http://www.ontarioparks.com/english/algo.html

We had a great time and found that it was everything and more that we had been told by others. Our goal on this trip was to Bass Fish. Our time and lures were dedicated to fishing bass. However, these lakes offer all forms of fish and hold many trophy fish for dedicated anglers. There are local fisherman ready to share their tales and brag about how fortunate they are that this fishery is in their backyard.

Algonquin has a reputation for some of the best trout fishing in Canada. More than 230 lakes have native Brook Trout and 149 have Lake Trout -- a fantastic concentration of trout waters that continue to yield good fishing because of the Park's tradition of wise conservation.
Along the highway, many of the lakes are stocked with Splake (a hybrid of Brook and Lake trout) and fishing is outstanding. Spring is the best season for trout and summer brings on more enjoyment with Smallmouth Bass. Spend a July day with the family at a prime bass location, enjoying the scenery and reeling in the night's dinner.

The park holds amazing scenery and the endless streams and tributaries offer wildlife at its best. You will find that it holds close and personal adventures to the great outdoors. A camera is a definite must.

We spent time camping and enjoying the stars as they fell from the sky. Sitting around the campfire and bragging about our days catch and the big one that should have been. Guaranteed Algonquin will make great stories to bring home to your fishing buddies.
Algonquin Provincial Park is located in Canada and is a provincial park located between Georgian Bay and the Ottawa River in the province of Ontario. It is the first provincial park in Canada having been established in 1893. It covers about 7630 square kilometers. Its size, combined with its proximity to the major urban centres of Toronto and Ottawa make it one of the most popular Provincial parks in the province and moreover the entire country. Highway 60 runs through the south of the park, while the Trans-Canada Highway bypasses it to the north. Over 2400 lakes and 1200 kilometres of streams and rivers are located within the park, including Canoe Lake and the Petawawa, Nipissing, Amable du Fond, Madawaska, and Tim rivers.

If you're looking for music you can sit back and just play... and by "just play", I mean music you can do your daily routines to and not get annoyed by. This type of music is good on that aspect. It reminds me of some videogame music you'd here in a Tobal, Spyro, Megaman X, or a Capcom game. Check it out!

They are THX certified and designed which means that the leaders in sound quality testing have carefully tested them in very high pressure environments and they found little or no problems in the sound quality tearing, dampening, or in any way decreasing in value. The Logitech z-2300 features an 8" subwoofer and two satellite "tweeters". The range is very nice and they come with a remote controller that can adjust the volume and bass levels. They're loud too. I usually don't raise them above half, and when I do the neighbors aren't too happy about it. They have a great range and you can hear your audio very clearly. You'll be able to hear and feel your audio with a total RMS power of 200 watts and a peak power of 400 pounding watts. You can easily connect these speakers to your PC, your Mac, a portable MP3 player, or virtually anything else that has a 3.5MM output jack. If you're looking to replace that crappy default 2.0 speaker set that came with your POS rig, I highly suggest picking these badass motherfucking awesome youll-never-go-back speakers for $105.99 from our friends at Newegg. Oh, and yes, Logitech does offer a moar bigger, moar badassed set if 2.1 with an 8" bass just wont cut it. They're just $172 more.

When I heard that Warren Buffett was in favor of the deal, I knew in my heart that the American cause was lost. The last vestige of our empire in the new world would fall victim to the Euronauts - Budweiser would be bested by the Belgians.

But before we all get overly jingoistic about the affair, let us remember those other great American brewers whose market shares were diminished or crushed by the juggernaut from St. Louis: Schaefer, Stroh's, Schmiidt's, Piels, Falstaff, Genesee, Narragansett, Rheingold, Knickerbocker, Hamm's, Olympia, National Bohemian and of course the venerable - Olde Frothingslosh. Who amongst us has shed a tear or raised the flag on their behalf.

I believe that ridding ourselves of one company that has dominated better than fifty percent of the marketplace for such a long time is good for America. Just because InBev took Budweiser doesn't mean that we can't still kick some Bass.

Like our forefathers we must shed monarchy. We shall not be ruled by the king of beers.

I say, "Pabst for president and Schlitz for VP!"

It's a thing that is often said between bloggers. Actually I don't have enough energy to write a post in English. The link below is the Who's "Substitute", which was titled in Japan as "Pinch Hitter of Love (Koi-no-Pinchi-Hittah)". Probably I was not born yet at the time. I think this is a good song, but for me, it sounds too smart and sophisticated as a Rock 'n' Roll song. Although I am not going to be too much bitter for this song, I don't like the bass using the lowest E, open string of the fourth.

Ah,...tonight again, Wordpress deletes an embedding of youtube material automatically. It irritates me a lot. But I can do nothing for it. Okay, I just put a link by using "a href" tag.

i'm posting this mix because it may take the cake as my favourite mix that i've ever done. i think someone on a certain jungle forum, somewhere in the world, at some point in time may have made claim to the fact that even their mum grooved to it in the car.
