Changing places gave me an uninterrupted view of the girl dining with her mother at the next table.  She was in her early twenties, cute, with dark brown hair in a short style that framed her face.  In keeping with a warm summer evening, she wore a knee-length, pale yellow dress that had a pale blue geometrical pattern, slender straps; and the low cut revealed the upper contours of her small but ample breasts.

The girl and her mother dined and chatted.  My wife and I dined, chatted and watched the world go by.  Suddenly, the girl's cell phone rang.  She answered and made to leave the table, not wishing her mother to overhear the conversation.

And that is when it occurred.  Still seated, the girl moved her right leg about 18 inches to the right in order to gain leverage to rise from the seat; in doing so, she gave me a PG-rated Sharon Stone moment.  It was impossible to avoid.  The narrowing gap between her inner thighs was right in my line of vision and drew my gaze in toward the triangular target of male desire, hidden by the dark blue marbled pattern of her panties or thong.

Like Dan Maskell commentating for the BBC on the Wimbledon tennis championships of yesteryear, my response was, "Ooooo, I say."  My wife threw me a puzzled glance.  With the girl now several yards away deep in her conversation, I explained what I had just seen, adding that it was most unladylike.

You see I was brought up in an age when young women were careful not to reveal that most intimate part of their anatomy to public gaze.  When the mini-skirt came on to the fashion scene, girls were careful how they sat down and got up from a sitting position; legs were always kept firmly pressed together.  When bending down to retrieve something from the floor, they would bend at the knees and stoop gracefully to pick up whatever it was that had fallen.  Even when wearing jeans, girls did not bend down from the waist.  It took liberation during the 1970s before jeans-clad young women adopted the more mannish posture that is now commonplace.

When the girl came back to her table, I became more and more intrigued by the incident.  Surely she must have been aware of what she had revealed in front of my gaze?  It wasn't like she was some gawky 14-year-old, with braces on her teeth, and completely unaware that what lies between her legs is highly sought after, a prize that men will lie, cheat, steal, even kill for.  And it wasn't as if I was wearing dark glasses and carrying a white cane.

After finishing my cuban panini, served with coleslaw, I settled back with a cup of coffee and whiled away the time with conversation and a cigarette or two.  The girls' cell phone rang again and she reprised the earlier glimpse of her femininity, as she once again moved away from her table.

Now, once might have been an inadvertent lapse in decorum on her part, twice set me thinking.  I began to suspect that it might be some kind of game and she knew exactly what she was doing.  It was one big tease, as if to say to me, "You can look, but you can't touch."

Again, I told my wife and put forward my theory that the girl was deliberately flaunting herself at me.  My wife, like most wives, was quick to deflate my male ego.  She instantly dismissed the theory and proffered a more pragmatic explanation; the girl's dress, given the warmth and humidity of the evening, might have stuck to the chair and that had caused it to ride up.  I countered that it had nothing to do with the dress but the manner in which the girl moved.  Rather than opening her legs to get up from the seat, she should have swiveled to one side with her legs pressed together and then stood up.

The girl's mother must have overhead me and passed this information to her daughter because, when they decided to leave a few minutes later, the girl followed the exact procedure I had described.  I was thus denied a third and final view.  She had reverted to her basic instinct.

So, keeping in mind this undying and not so subconscious desire to be a part of the film world, I humbly present before you..**Extended Drumroll** (Notice how every major announcement sounds so much more cooler when preceded by a drumroll? Whoever thought of using the drumroll to built anxiety was a genious)

TERMINAL RANT's LIST OF MOVIE SCENES SHE WISH SHE WERE A PART OF!! (Ta da!!!!)

• The climax of Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. The slow moving train, a bloody yet somehow cute looking Shahruk Khan with an outstretched arm and the embodiment of the strict and stern fathers the world over, Amrish Puri mouthing what has by now become almost legendary, "Jaa Beti, Jee le apni Zindagi (for the benefit of my non Hindi speaking friends, the line translates to, 'Go my girl, live your life', though it somehow sounds way much cooler in Hindi) and finally me..Flashing a grateful smile at my father and running along the still slow moving train ( no wonder our trains are always late) and into the arms of my love. Hmmmmmmmmmm!!! I've played this scene a million times in my head and it just keeps getting better everytime. Though I'm positive that in realtime, I would a tripped a million times before finally getting into the train.

• The black n white car scene in Kill Bill. Reasons are simple enough, I like to kick butts and inspite of all the gore, I still like the idea of a girl out to get revenge. I love the yellow tracksuit, I love the action and most of all, I like the way she says " And when I get there, I'm gonna Kill Bill", complete with wind in her hair and the continuous oscillation of her head and that uber sexy back ground score. Aah! The ultimate power trip!

• Any fight sequence from the Tomb Raider series. The pout-y action figure not just gets the guys drooling their life out but also manages to excite more than a few women. I mean, really, long jet black hair, a perfectly filled figure and the handling of mean machines with aplomb. I like the idea of looking feminine and then kicking more than my share of 'villainous' butts. How thoroughly dreamlike and enjoyable. Oh yes, I played this sequence in my head, a lot.

• Sharon Stone's leg-crossing interrogation scene in the Basic Instinct. Why? Go figure!

• The last scene from the Titanic. Well, technically not the last scene but the scene where Jack dies. **Sniff**. How tragic! I could just picture myself there, a pretty picture of both grief and determination at the same time. It does feel a tad silly now, but when the movie released, I spend good many nights crying myself to sleep cause I was Rose and I had just lost my Jack.

• The pot making scene from Ghost. What? Its a good make out scene. Very sensuous. A Woman has her needs, you see.

• The scene where Maria falls in love with the Captain in The Sound of Music. Well, technically its falling in love with your boss but something about the way it was handled doesn't make it look tacky at all. " So somewhere in my youth or childhood,I must have done something good", and that song is another reason along with the extremely yummy captain. Well, actually the entire movie is worth replaying in my head but something about this scene means more.

• Jodie Foster's introduction scene in The Silence of the Lambs - Wow, the slow long tense walk to Hannibal Lecter's cell. I think I could have added a tad more dignity to it. Like I said, I think. There is something about that scene and something so chilling about the way, Mr. Lecter urges Foster closer to his cell, "Closer, please. Clo-ser". Positively creepy yet highly replayable in my head.

• A Sooraj Bharjatiya heroine. I know this is not a scene but Ive imagined me being the ultimate SB heroine all my life. She, a Sooraj Bharjatiya heroine is everything I'm not, she is shy, she is silent, she is demure, she is the embodiment of the Bharatiya Nari, she is so innocent and so nice and everybody loves her and oh ya, she is incapable of hurting anyone, even if she wanted to. So you see, I couldn't bear to be like that for life, but I sure dont mind being that in intervals, which is most often right after I watch one of his flicks.

Well, this is just a few from the top of my head. Think a lil deeper and Im sure there are tons more. But like I always say, lets keep it for another day shall we? and ya, if there are any scenes you think is worth replaying in my head, drop me line, wont you? There is always room for more melodrama. :D

PS: What is with me and this compulsive need to make lists of late? First it was the bucket list, then a list of the things from the past that we love, then came the list to identifying me and now this! Do all women..wait..this might not be exclusive to women, so lemme rephrase, so do all of mankind go through this list making spree at some point or the other? or am I the latest victim of OCLMD (Obsessive Compulsive List Making DIsorder)? But what the heck as long as its an important life changing list (which all my lists are) then I don't think I should be complaining :D

I'm no fan of China's violent suppression of Tibet's sovereignty, but it's always dangerous when Hollywood stars start making pronouncements about religion and science. It's also hazardous to their bank accounts, at least in the short term. Christian Dior has pulled an advertising campaign in China featuring Stone, most famous for her role in Basic Instinct.

Like Rachael Ray (see "Saturn Teaches Rachael Ray a Lesson"), Stone is getting a visit from Saturn. Unlike Ray, who is having Saturn on her Virgo Sun, Stone has Saturn the taskmaster sitting on her Virgo Ascendant, or Rising. She's also got transiting Uranus in Pisces lighting up her natal square between Mercury at 26 Pisces and Saturn at 25 Sagittarius.

As an astrologer, I think weather has more to do with planetary transits than it does with karma. I can just imagine what pious Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and Christians around the world are going to say when the Big One hits LA: God is punishing Hollywood for all those violent, sex-filled movies. You know, the ones like Basic Instinct.

Affascinante e maliziosa come sempre la Stone, anche in Costa Azzurra riesce a ricreare quello stile scandaloso tipico hollywoodiano.

Al suo arrivo su una piccola barca a motore sullo yacht dello stilista italiano, Sharon ha allargato le gambe per scendere e oplà ecco rifatta la famosa scena di Basic Instinct.

Fortunatamente, in questa occasione, l'attrice ha avuto il pudore di indossare gli slip. Tinta carne, il cui effetto fa nudo, ma il trucco c'è.

Endlich habe auch ich mal diesen, als einer der besten Filme aller Zeiten gelobten, Streifen gesehen. Ich finde es ist zwar ein guter Thriller mit gutem Soundtrack, aber den Hype kann ich irgendwie nicht ganz nachvollziehen...

Alle Schauspieler überzeugen und die Story ist durchdacht, aber zu einem Klasse-Film hat mir dann doch irgendwas gefehlt... Was genau kann ich auch nicht sagen, aber irgendwie fand ich das ganze von Zeit zu Zeit ein bisschen schwach.

Was die Sexszenen angeht: da ich Michael Douglas nicht so extrem attrktiv finde, gucke ich mir da lieber The Specialist mit Sharon Stone und Sylvester "Sly" Stallone an... ;)

It then occurred to me while I was waiting in line to pay, that my choice of movies to watch were of sexually explicit, sociopath serial killers with too much money and a drug problem.  Needless to say, I'm sure the clerk was a little sketched out by me. He did say there was a Basic Instinct 2 tho. haha However, American Psycho is an awesome movie and Basic Instinct is completely 90s cheesy trash..that I love!   The author of  American Psycho also wrote Less Than Zero, one of my favorite books.

I find it pretty amusing that those were what I came out with from Blockbuster instead of Super Bad or whatever is out right now. No shame, just interesting. and no those movies don't reflect anything I know of; haha I just felt like watching them.

With the Pennsylvania primary this week, there is a lot of election stuff out there.  And, given that I am just now getting around to mention it, one could say that I was quite underwhelmed by the even.  Essentially, we are at the same place where we were last week.  And, so now, this guy thinks Hillary should drop out.  But this guy says that while maybe she should drop out, she can't really do.  How can she right after a big win.  This guy says Clinton should be the nominee since Obama is black (and thus can't win in November).  I was going to write about just how racist his column was, but then I noticed he was British and not American, I decided it didn't matter too much.  This guy listed all of Obama's baggage.  But, the scariest thing is when I found myself agreeing with Michael Moore.  Yes, that Michael Moore. That, along with this WSJ hyperbole about stockpiling food tells me that the apocalypse may well be upon us.

A few years ago, I didn't think that the DNC could do worse than Terry McAulife.  Then they put Howard Dean in charge.  And he in fact has been worse,  Once again, he wants a nominee, and wants one now.  Only he has Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid yelling with him.  Reid, to his credit, is making a little bit of sense.  Again, if you want your nominee in April, hold your primaries in April.  Don't blame the superdelegates.  And intervening will bite you badly.

I haven't seen "Explelled" yet, and I haven't decided if I am going to or not.  To me, it strikes me as being in the same vein of any Michael Moore or Morgan Spurlock "documentary."  Sure, there is some truth in there, but they just can't seem to resist the hyperbole.  I think this review of Expelled confimrs my fears.

• The director of "Basic Instinct" is also a historical Jesus "scholar."  In fact, he is part of the Jesus Seminar.  And, he has written a "biography" about Jesus that he wants to make into a movie.  Of course, the gospels are wrong and even John Dominic Crossan thinks his conclusions are out in left field (and for those of you not familiar with JDC, that would be like William Shattner accusing someone of "overacting").  So, we have a nice controversy to look forward to in a couple of years.
• Jenna Bush might not vote for McCain.  Someone thought that would be newsworthy.

Apparently, some are wondering if we should give up the search for an AIDS vaccine.  While we are at it, maybe we should give up on the cure for cancer as well.  I don't have any AIDS links on my sidebar yet (if anyone has a good one, point me to it), but to me, AIDS in Africa is nothing short of a biological genocide.  Giving up is not an option.

Verhoeven is best known as the director of blockbuster films including "Basic Instinct" and "RoboCop," but he is also a member of "Jesus Seminar," a group of scholars and authors that seeks to establish historical facts about Jesus.

Marianna Sterk of the publishing house J.M. Meulenhoff said the book included several ideas that ran contrary to Christian faith, including the suggestion that Jesus could be the son of a Roman soldier who raped Mary during a Jewish uprising against Roman rule in 4 B.C. (link to full story)

So... I am a little unclear; which movie did Mr. Verhoeven direct that qualified him to make these claims- RoboCop or was it Basic Instinct?

Don't get me wrong; I am all for open discourse on the life of Jesus but shouldn't there be at least some... say... oh, I don't know... factual basis?

Movies with Liberal Messages/Themes

The correlation coefficient for the control group was 0.6938172023, while it was a paltry 0.2309258957 for the movies with liberal messages or themes. The coefficient represents the degree to which one data set correlates with another - basically, critics and audiences are more in agreement if the number is higher. There's a pretty significant difference here, suggesting that film critics as a whole tend to endorse liberal flicks more than the general populace does.

Also fun: using CelebPolitics.com's lists of the most liberal/conservative films determined by the cast's ideology.

Here? Liberal cast coefficient: 0.7397525597. Conservative cast coefficient: 0.5970928143. Much closer to the control group than the variable group, even strengthening the argument that critics are more likely to recommend a liberal film than a person is to see it.

So yeah, film critics are probably more liberal than the moviegoing audience, but who can blame them when conservative actors make such horrible movies? I mean, really, Son of the Mask? Delta Force 2? Wow.

Why not write a screenplay in one month?

I’m not joking.

I know there are a zillion reason why you can’t do it…but it can be done. Stallone wrote Rocky in less than a week. Ditto that for Joe Eszterhas writing Basic Instinct.

Granted it took Arthur Miller six weeks to write Death of a Salesman, but let’s not shoot for such lofty goals this time around.

When you write quickly you write from the subconscious. It was said that Jack Kerouac used to take a butcher roll of paper and just keep writing. (Let me sneak an Iowa reference in here...In "On the Road," Kerouac wrote, "the prettiest girls in the world live in Des Moines.")

But those moments seem to be rare for any writers so you need to grab a hold of them when they come.

I think if you read the tips on this blog it will help you get out of the gate. There is a wonderful book on screenwriting by Viki King titled, How to Write a Movie in 20 Days that is a fitting book to recommend.

The title isn’t the only thing that’s kept this book in circulation longer than most. Most books on screenwriting tend to be written by men and tend to be analytical in nature. Viki brings some nurturing skills to the table. Like, it’s okay to write. And all artists need encouragement .

But the main thing I like about the book is she says day one—write ten pages. Just like that. The crazy thing is you can do it. It may be like learning the game of chess, you may not be any good at the game but at least you're playing.

Don’t have a computer or screenwriting software? That’s okay, there are still successful screenwriters who prefer to write on a typewriter (Joe Eszterhas, his films have earned over a billion dollars at the box office) or to hand write their scripts (Emma Thompson, Oscar winner for Sense and Sensibility)

Need a little more inspiration? Accountability? Competition?

Script Frenzy may be for you. I don’t know much about it but beginning today there are 6,460 writers signed up to write at least a 100 page original screenplay within the next 30 days. Check it out at http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/ (Kids and teens can get into the act as well through a separate challenge.)

And once you hit that deadline you can turn around and send your script to The Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting whose deadline is May 1, 2008. 

That fellowship attracts the best screenwriters who have never sold a script. Past winner include Michael A. Rich (Finding Forrester), Doug Atchison (Akeelah and the Bee), Susannah Grant (who went on to write Erin Brockovich). It’s not free to enter and the competition is stiff. But remember, we are talking about screenwriting here.

Heck, half the writers in the WGA didn’t earn any money writing last year. You do this because you have a passion and desire to write. And like riding a bike the more you do it the better you’ll get. (And not too many people get paid to ride a bike either. But there's satisfaction there.)

Then after you’ve written your script in 30 days, and entered it in the Nicholl Fellowship you can take a month or so and polish your script for the June 15, 2008 deadline for Final Draft's Big Break screenwriting contest.   

I still think most screenwriting contests are money makers for the groups and people that sponsor them, but if it keeps you turning out pages that’s good. And writers have launched careers through them so don't rule them out. Just be careful where you send your money because at $50. a pop that adds up.

But mainly focus on writing and marketing your writing.  Meaning you should be contacting producers, agents, and anyone related to the industry that can get your work read. That includes the local production talent wherever you live.

Be like that protagonist you are writing about; willing to overcome obstacles to go to the end of the line to achieve a goal. And if you can write a screenplay in 30 days you can at least cross that off your bucket list.

She's the vixen the musician pines for, the giddy camera’s lustrous focus,the sultry “Man-Eater” that’s enraptured every-so-many hapless souls; she's the femme fatale. Men, beware, she'll probably break your heart if you're not careful. Girls, lookout, she just might try to take your man when you're not looking. (and she will succeed)  Since Eve’s first naughty bite into sin, man has cautiously dealt with woman and her hypnotic allure, aware of her tremendous seductive power and the the trouble it can get him into. But damnit, isn't it just a little fun to play with fire?

The femme fatale is toxic and tender, caring and destructive, angelic and diabolic, naughty and nice,  and just when you think you have this female Don Juan all figured out, she'll throw you a curveball. If nothing else, she's a conundrum, and who isn't enticed by a little mystery? Let's be honest we all like the hard to get, and the femme fatale is plain and simply unattainable. Buried beneath the coy flirtation, fluttering eyelashes, and topsy-turvy emotional lapses is the real femme fatale and only she, herself can know the mystery that lies within.

She'll welt you with her leather whip, throw you around like a yoyo, and trample all over your fragile heart and all the while she's there to caress you with her playful laugh and cutesy smile. In movies and song, we can't get enough of her. Here are my favorite songs devoted to the femme fatale:
