WWF Survivor Series 1994
November 23, 1994
San Antonio, TX
Freeman Coliseum

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Bret Hart (3/20/1994)
Intercontinental Champion: Razor Ramon (8/29/1994)
World Tag Team Champions: Diesel & Shawn Michaels (8/28/1994)
Women's Champion: Bull Nakano (11/20/1994)

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Gorilla Monsoon in their one and only PPV together.

Diesel, Shawn Michaels, Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart & Jeff Jarrett vs. Razor Ramon, 1-2-3 Kid, Davey Boy Smith, Fatu & Sionne (w/Capt. Lou Albano & Afa) – 5-on-5 Survivor Series Elimination Match

You can't help but get the feeling that you have the Kliq standing out and then there's everybody else in the match. Diesel and Shawn stay out of the match for a good long while as Owen, Neidhart and Jarrett all get their butts kicked by the babyfaces. Lots of good fast paced action with everybody hitting their usual spots. Fatu has a little trouble getting used to wearing boots, which was a cool 'little thing' that's missed in today's wrestling. Diesel finally tags in when the time is right for him and JACKKNIFES Fatu for the first elimination at 13:32. In comes the 1-2-3 Kid, and out he goes thanks to a JACKKNIFE at 14:14. Sionne is our third recipient for the JACKKNIFE to rid us of the New Headshrinkers completely at 14:47. What Owen, Neidhart and Jarrett couldn't do in the first ten minutes, Diesel accomplished in 75 seconds with three moves. That guy is getting PUSHED. Davey Boy Smith gets booted out to the floor by Diesel and attacked by the other three members of Diesel's team to get him counted out at 15:10. That leaves Razor Ramon against five guys. Razor fights back hard against Diesel and catches him with the Flying Bulldog off the middle rope. That gets two. Diesel takes over with a short-arm clothesline as Shawn encourages him to put Razor away. Diesel hits Snake Eyes once, but Razor shoves him off into the corner the second time and gives Diesel a big ol' slam. Diesel avoids the RAZORS EDGE with a backdrop and JACKKNIFES Razor. Now Shawn wants the tag. He convinces Diesel to hold up Razor for SWEET CHIN MUSIC, but Razor ducks and Diesel gets creamed from Shawn for the third time. Diesel has finally had enough of that and boy is he livid. He tosses away his teammates and slowly chases Shawn to the back and all five men are counted out – giving Razor Ramon the win. (21:42) Survivor: Razor Ramon. Three days later, Diesel would capture the WWF title to start on the road to WrestleMania 11. Good match and had it not contained the Diesel/HBK angle and finished up with one member of either team getting the pinfall, it could have been a MOTYC and stole the show. This was similar to the opener at Survivor Series '91 in that regard. ***½

Jerry Lawler, Sleazy, Queasy & Cheesy vs. Doink, Dink, Pink & Wink – 4-on-4 Survivor Series Elimination Match

Worst PPV match of the year? Lawler and Doink's teammates are all midgets in case you're wondering. This was awful to sit through and would be even more awful to have do PBP for it, so I won't. Doink and Lawler stall around a lot to start. The midgets do some silly stuff that leaves me wondering what Vince is THINKING. Doink comes off the second turnbuckle and nails Lawler with a crossbody, but Lawler rolls through and pins Doink with a handful of tights for the first elimination at 10:38. Cheesy pinned Wink with a little help from Lawler at 13:16. Cheesy pins Pink with more help from Lawler at 14:31. I'm just trying to get through this, folks. Sleazy pins Dink after Queasy comes in and reverses a pin situation for Lawler's team to win. (16:05) Survivors: Jerry Lawler, Sleazy, Queasy & Cheesy. It's actually a rare clean sweep for Lawler's team. Afterwards, all the midgets turn on Lawler, leading to a pie in the face courtesy of Doink. I think we're through here. CRAP

Todd tells us that a new WWF Women's Champion was crowned at the Tokyo Egg Dome in Japan as Bull Nakano dethroned Alundra Blayze. We see a clip of Nakano delivering a top-rope legdrop to win the title. Todd is standing by Bull Nakano now where she says a bunch of stuff in Japanese only for Todd to treat her like she's deaf and retarded by talking…really loud…and slow…to her.

WWF World Champion Bret Hart (w/Davey Boy Smith) vs. Bob Backlund (w/Owen Hart) – Submission Match

The only way to lose is for either wrestler to apply their respective submission finishers and have their towel bearer throw in the towel for them once they feel their wrestler cannot continue. Stu & Helen Hart are at ringside to witness the spectacle. You could say this goes back to 1983 when Backlund lost the WWF title belt to the Iron Sheik. He says that he never submitted and therefore never lost the WWF title. As far as his feud with Bret Hart, it all started on the July 30th edition of Superstars after Bret beat Backlund fair and square in a title match and then Backlund snapped and applied the Crossface Chickenwing. And he's been crazy ever since. Backlund begins making a few desperate attempts at the CROSSFACE CHICKENWING, but Bret thwarts them off and starts to wear him down. Bret misses an elbow off the second turnbuckle, which is the opening for Backlund to begin working the arm. He does a great job staying adamant with the armbar no matter how well Bret tries to fight it off. Bret even comes back and gets a swinging neckbreaker, but Backlund won't let go of his arm. Finally, Bret gets loose and delivers an inverted atomic drop. He follows up with the Figure-Four. Backlund even tells Owen to throw in the towel for him, but Owen refuses. Backlund finally reverses it, but Bret reverses it back only to have Backlund reach the ropes. Bret hammers on Backlund's injured left leg until Backlund can't even stand on it. Backlund comes back with a nice piledriver and tries the CROSSFACE CHICKENWING, but Bret struggles and reaches the ropes. Backlund hits a badly executed swinging neckbreaker as the crowd chants, "Let's go Bret!" Backlund charges into the ringpost and then demands Owen to throw in the towel, but Owen responds with, "I'll never throw it in!" Backlund tries a piledriver, but takes a backdrop instead. Backlund then hooks a sleeper to slow down Bret. Bret fights out by driving Backlund head-first into the top turnbuckle. They do a double-KO spot with Bret up first to score with a standing leg drop. He follows up with the piledriver, the bulldog, the Russian Legsweep, the backbreaker, and the middle-rope elbow drop. SHARPSHOOTER TIME! Owen tries to get in the ring, but Bulldog chases him out. They race around the ring, which leads to Owen coming back in and nailing Bret in the back of the head to break the hold. Owen scoots out and ducks when Davey Boy Smith dives for him, who goes head-first into the steel steps! That'll do it for Bulldog on THIS night. Bret insults his own mother by calling Owen an SOB, so he gets the CROSSFACE CHICKENWING! Bret has no choice but to give up, but Bulldog is KO'ed and can't throw the towel in. Owen starts to plead with his mom and confesses that he didn't mean for this whole feud to happen. He begins to CRY! Someone give this guy an Oscar. The whole time this is going on, Bret is still in the hold! Now Owen gets on his knees in front of his mother. Stu doesn't believe him, and takes away the towel from Helen. Owen continues to tell his mom to throw in the towel until she finally gives in and steals it away from Stu and tosses Bret's towel in the ring to end the match. (35:17) After eleven years, Bob Backlund regains the WWF title. Post-match, Owen scurries back to the locker room with Bret's towel in his possession. Such a compelling match thanks to an excellent performance from everybody involved. ****

Backstage, Todd Pettingell meets with Owen. With a big smile on his face, he admits that this whole thing was a setup and that his mom and dad fell for it. Owen is the King of Harts and now Bret is nothing.

Tatanka, Bam Bam Bigelow, King Kong Bundy & The Heavenly Bodies (w/Ted DiBiase) vs. Lex Luger, Adam Bomb, The Smokin' Gunns & Mabel (w/Oscar) – 5-on-5 Survivor Series Elimination Match

Yes! The Heavenly Bodies on PPV! Luger and Tatanka kick things off with Tatanka hammering on Luger for a minute or so until Luger stops selling it and comes back with clotheslines. Luger presses Del Ray and drops him on top of Bigelow. Bundy comes in, but freaks out as Mabel waddles over beside Luger. Once order is restored, Tatanka tags in Pritchard and Luger tags in Mabel. Pritchard actually tries a crossbody and gets slammed for being so stupid. He avoids Mabel sitting on him, however, and drops a knee. Mabel reverses a whip out of the corner and backdrops Pritchard. Mabel climbs to the middle turnbuckle and puts Pritchard away with a flying crossbody (!!) at 3:58. I feel so sorry for Pritchard. Del Ray comes in next. He tries clotheslines on Mabel, but that won't work. Mabel catches him for a Bossman slam and sends Del Ray sliding over to his corner to tag in Bundy. They have a little shoulderblock showdown with Mabel winning that. Bundy tags in Bigelow. Now this big-man competition should go a little smoother. Bigelow misses his enziguri kick, so Mabel connects with his spinning heel kick instead. Mabel actually goes up top, but gets slammed off for his troubles. Mabel tries to avoid a flying sunset flip and sits down on Bigelow. That's got to feel GREAT! They both take a clothesline tumble out to the floor, which is a crazy bump for either man at their size to be taking. Bigelow makes it back in the ring in time, but Mabel does not and gets counted out at 7:18. Del Ray connects with a Superkick on Billy Gunn, but takes a backslide for two. Adam Bomb and Bigelow tag. Adam Bomb gets dumped and comes back in with a slingshot clothesline. Bundy nails Adam Bomb from the apron, allowing Bigelow to bulldog Adam Bomb to set up a moonsault (!!) at 9:09. Luger runs in and quickly rolls up Bigelow for a near-fall. Del Ray tags and decks Luger with a Superkick for two! Luger comes back with a RUNNING FOREARM to eliminate Del Ray at 10:56. Tatanka knocks Lex from behind into Lex's own corner. The Smokin' Gunns double-team Tatanka for a while, including delivering the SIDEWINDER for a near-fall. Bart tries a crucifix, but gets caught for the PAPOOSE TO GO to pin Bart at 14:28. Billy & Luger trade frequent tags and do a good job of isolating Tatanka. Billy makes the mistake that enables Tatanka to tag in Bundy. Billy tries to fight back, but takes an AVALANCHE in the corner and pinned at 17:15. That leaves Luger against Bundy, Bigelow and Tatanka. DiBiase just walks around ringside laughing because well, it is pretty funny. The heels take turns beating the crap out of Lex for a while. Luger ends up surprising Tatanka with a small package at 23:14. With Luger so heavily winded, Bundy comes right in and easily SPLASHES Luger to win it. (23:23) Survivors: Bam Bam Bigelow and King Kong Bundy. This was a lot better than expected. The big men especially dug down deep and pulled out some of their crazier spots. DiBiase's Million Dollar Team continue the Luger beatdown after the bell. **½

Backstage, Todd Pettingell is standing by with the NEW WWF Champion, Mr. Bob Backlund. Backlund says he's been the champion ever since 1978, and all he did tonight was retain the belt. Then he sounds like he's talking about how milk is produced by saying things like pasteurizing and homogenizing, but he's only talking about getting us WWF fans back into morality. Backlund says he'll take on anybody. Now when he says "anybody", does that include Diesel? I guess so, BECAUSE HE FEELS LIKE GOD!

Yokozuna (w/Mr. Fuji & Jim Cornette) vs. The Undertaker (w/Paul Bearer) – Casket Match (Special Outside Enforcer: Chuck Norris)

I wonder how awesome a Chuck Norris appearance for the WWE say in 2006 would've been. Conan O'Brien would have had a hay day with that. Chuck is here to keep all the bad men out so that we don't get a complete repeat of their Royal Rumble casket match. Thank God. Taker freaks Yoko out at the beginning and he tries to bail, but he's just too fat to get away. Yokozuna reverses a whip and then splashes Taker in the corner, but Taker NO-SELLS because he's *dead*! Yokozuna gets nailed out on top of the casket and then runs away. He's skeered of them things. Yoko pulls Taker out to the floor, where Taker sends Yokozuna into the steel steps head first. Back in, Taker goes OLD SCHOOL on Yoko, but he doesn't go down! He catches Taker with a Samoan drop. Yoko tries to put Taker in the casket, but Taker fights back. However, Taker misses an elbow and sits up. Uranage by Yoko, followed by a legdrop. Taker gets rolled into the casket, but Yoko can't close the door on him. Taker pulls Yoko into the casket with him and they both fight trying to get out. Fuji comes over and pulls Taker's hair. He gets out and goes after Fuji. Cornette comes up behind Taker, but Taker turns around and nails him. Back in, Yoko dominates with some boring offense until Taker comes back with a flying clothesline. As Taker tries to roll Yoko into the casket, Bundy and Bigelow come down to ringside to bother Chuck Norris. While this is happening, IRS sneaks in and attacks Taker, including putting him in the casket. IRS then leaves with Bundy and Bigelow through the crowd. As Yokozuna goes to shut the casket, Taker reaches up and grabs Yokozuna by the throat. Now Jarrett comes down to ringside and he gets kicked down by Chuck Norris. Back in the ring, Taker delivers a clothesline and a DDT off the ropes to Yoko. Taker kicks Yokozuna into the casket. He throws Fuji's Japanese flag in with him and shuts the casket to win the match. (15:24) This wasn't as bad as the prior casket match between these two, but still a suck fest. Yokozuna wouldn't be seen again until WrestleMania XI as Owen Hart's super secret tag team partner. ½*

Final Thoughts: This was the show where you could really see the focus of the company being taken off Bret and onto the hipper, cooler Kliq guys like Diesel, Shawn, Razor and the Kid. While Bret vs. Backlund is ****, I wouldn't recommend it to just anybody because it isn't for everybody. Also there is some pretty bad stuff on here like the main event and the ridiculous midgets match. Thumbs in the middle for Survivor Series 1994. Not necessarily recommended viewing, but it's not going to kill you because the opener and the title match are real good.

August 1, 1994
Youngstown, OH
Beeghly Center

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Bret Hart (3/20/1994)
Intercontinental Champion: Diesel (4/13/1994)
World Tag Team Champions: The Headshrinkers (4/26/1994)
Women's Champion: Alundra Blayze (12/13/1993)

Your hosts are Vince McMahon & Randy Savage. This was Vince's big return since 'pinning the U.S. Supreme Court to the mat for the 1-2-3,' says Randy. Yeah, he makes court jokes like that one all night long.

Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels (w/Diesel)

This is their first meeting inside that squared circle since WrestleMania 10 and also Shawn's first TV match period since WrestleMania 10. What's going to happen? It's PANDEMONIUM! They run the ropes a bunch to start. Shawn trips up Razor and walks over him only to turn around and take a right hand to the face. HBK takes the corner flip bump out to the floor and as he tries to make it back in the ring, Razor makes it a little difficult with right hands. Shawn finally just pokes Ramon in the eye to get back in, but gets caught coming off the top. Shawn takes over with a swinging neckbreaker. Fallaway Slam by Razor turns the tide for 1-2-NO! Shawn backs Razor into the corner to escape an armbar and blasts him in the face with a forearm. Dropkick gets two. After Shawn unloads on Razor with left jabs, Diesel has himself a little fun by choking Razor in the ropes. Razor elbows out of a chinlock and blocks a hiptoss for a backslide. That gets two for Ramon. Shawn drills him with a clothesline and reapplies the chinlock, but Razor elbows out again. He blocks a second dropkick and catapults Shawn out on top of Diesel! Incredible. Commercial break. We come back to see Shawn yank Razor face-first into a corner only to be slammed off the top. Shawn pokes Razor in the eyes again to get out of an ab stretch. Shawn ducks low off a whip and gets his head smashed into the canvas, which is followed by a BAAAAACK body drop by Razor. Vince makes a cheap joke about the Goodwill Games that Ted Turner headed up in the '90s before the Time Warner sale. Seems a little unnecessary if you ask me. Capitalizing on the back work, Razor grabs a bearhug. Shawn makes an escape into a sunset flip. Razor punches Shawn down and kneels on top for 1-2-NO! Shawn reverses for a two, but stands up right into a clothesline for two. Razor gets dumped out for a Diesel clothesline as we go to our *second* break. We come back to see Shawn dropping a double-ax handle on Razor as he's draped on the apron. Back in, Shawn hits the Flying Back Elbow for 1-2-NO! Razor starts to come back, so Shawn cuts him off with a sleeper. Razor's arms drop twice, but not three times! He's ALIVE! A back suplex by Razor breaks the hold. Hey, it always does. Double-KO spot ensues. Razor blocks everything HBK throws at him and fires back with punches of his own. Shawn staggers around after the corner flip into a clothesline for 1-2-NO! Razor wants the Back Superplex, but Shawn elbows out and hits a crossbody block. Razor rolls through for 1-2-NO! Superkick by Shawn! Cover, 1-2-NO! Shawn looks to be going for the RAZOR'S EDGE, but Razor backdrops out. Now he wants to do the RAZOR'S EDGE, but Diesel pops up on the apron. He causes enough of a distraction for Shawn to grab the IC belt. He misses the charge at Razor and gets caught with a backdrop. While the ref disposes of the belt, Shawn reverses a whip into a Diesel Big Boot. Razor falls back into a school boy as Shawn pulls the tights and gets three. (17:52 shown) A little slow and monotonous in the middle, but a great TV match nonetheless. Diesel and HBK continue afterwards with a post-match beatdown. ***½

SummerSlam Report with Todd Pettingell: The latest news has Lex Luger accepting Tatanka's challenge. Don't forget the double main-event – Undertaker vs. Undertaker and WWF Champion Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart in a STEEL CAGE! Also, WWF Intercontinental Champion Diesel vs. Razor Ramon.

WWF Women's Champion Alundra Blayze vs. Bull Nakano (w/Luna Vachon) – non-title match

Vince says this is the WWF TV debut of Bull Nakano. He puts her over as a dominant force in Japan. It's funny that since Bull retired in 1997, she's become a pro golfer who lives in Florida. Nakano refuses a handshake and goes to work on Blayze. She delivers a pair of hair slings. Blayze comes back with a hurracanrana for two. She nails Nakano with one spin kick, but misses a second one and gets choked up against the ropes. Piledriver gets two for Nakano. She pulls Blayze up after two and delivers a Kneeling Powerbomb for 1-2-NO! Blayze flips out of a second one and sunset flips Nakano for 1-2-NO! Nakano sidesteps a front missile dropkick, but misses a Guillotine Legdrop. BRIDGING GERMAN SUPLEX by Blayze gets 1-2-NO! Blayze counters a German suplex with a front rollup for another two. Nakano takes a bump out to the floor from the top rope thanks to a dropkick by Blayze. She meets Bull with a nice plancha. Nakano reverses a whip into the ringpost, but charges into a backdrop. Whoops. We've now got a double-countout on our hands. (5:26) That was a lot better than I expected. With no decision, this sets up their title match at SummerSlam. Blayze fights off a two-on-one attack because she's the CHAMP. **¼

Next week: IRS & Bam Bam Bigelow versus Tatanka & Doink the Clown!

The King's Court with Jerry Lawler: Lawler meets a happy couple in the audience. The guy asks his girlfriend to marry him, but we have to find out what her answer is after the break. And we're back .Wow, the suspense was KILLING me. Now King and the chick Andrea is in the ring. King asks her again if she'll marry "Mike Boyle" and she says…YES! King forces himself on Andrea for a kiss (TV-G version of 'Primae Noctis', I'm guessing?) and then says "that was like kissing an orangutan with cold sores". Yeah it's not like kissing a fourteen year old girl, is it Jerry. Now it gets serious. Bob Backlund shows up and reminds us all that he's the unbeaten WWF champion. He never gave up to the Iron Sheik. Curse you and your towel, Arnold Skaaland! Anyways, Backlund slapped Bret in the face and then applied the Crossface Chickenwing previously on Superstars.

The Smokin' Gunns vs. George Anderson & Tom Bennett

Billy and Bart control Anderson for the duration. They hit the Double Russian Legsweep and put Anderson away with a Canadian backbreaker/flying neckbreaker combination. I have no idea what to call that. (1:44) Nice little squash for the Gunns.

Final Thoughts: Pretty cool episode of Raw for the time. Vince makes his on-screen return, Michaels and Ramon square off in a rare TV match that doesn't involve ladders, and we get to hear from Bob Backlund right after his heel turn which is crucial to the next year of main event storylines in the WWF. Quite the enjoyable hour of Raw if I do say so myself.

And now for a special bonus match…

WWF World Champion Bret Hart vs. Bob Backlund – (WWF Superstars 7/30/94)

This is Bobby Backlund's first WWF title match on TV at least since he lost the belt to the Iron Sheik in December of 1983 against his will because his manager Arnold Skaaland throwing in the towel for him. Who knows why he didn't get pissed about this sooner, but this was actually a pretty well hyped match for WWF Superstars. HUGE ovation for the Hitman, which was par for the course back then. JR and King are on commentary, which is great because Lawler is so anti-Bret that even though Backlund is still considered a babyface, he finds himself cheering for Backlund just merely because he wants to see Bret beaten so badly. They start off very cautious with one another. Backlund surprises Bret with a few aggressive nearfalls. Bret looks to slow Backlund down and goes to work on the arm. Backlund sells really well and keeps it all very interesting with escapes that wind up going nowhere for him. Backlund finally connects with a nice forearm and rolls Bret over with a body scissors for two. They exchange headbutts as Backlund delivers a piledriver for two. Bret backdrops out of a second piledriver and slams Backlund down for the standing legdrop. Backlund nicely counters Bret's attempt at an ab stretch for one of his own. Bret counters Backlund's ab stretch, but quickly takes a hiptoss. Backlund tries to roll Bret over out of a waistlock for a pin attempt and they wind up on the floor. Back in, Bret starts pounding on the back, but Backlund reverses a hard cross corner whip. He follows up with a hard slam for two. Backlund whips out a POWER move by applying a Canadian backbreaker. Bret counters out into a backslide for another nearfall. He looks to reapply the backbreaker, but Bret backdrops him over and falls on top for 1-2-NO! Backlund bridges out back into the standing position and they repeat the sequence into a backslide from Backlund for 1-2-NO! I like that. Lawler reprimands Backlund for not having a killer instinct because he's not being aggressive and following up on Bret. Now it's Bret who reverses a cross corner whip and hits a backbreaker for two. Backlund avoids the SHARPSHOOTER and takes an elbow drop instead. Bret gets tripped as he runs off the ropes and falls out to the floor. Backlund brings him back in and slowly covers for two. Back suplex by Backlund, but he doesn't capitalize. He counters a suplex into a small package for another nearfall on the champ. Backlund thinks he's won, but no siree Bob. Bret rattles Backlund with a small package and holds on for the three-count to retain. (14:07) Bret shakes hands with Backlund and hits all four corners to celebrate with his fans before going back over to Backlund for another handshake. BACKLUND DOESN'T LIKE TO BE TOUCHED! Bob rejects a second handshake and proceeds to slap Bret across the face and then maniacally puts the champ in the CROSSFACE CHICKENWING! A troupe of referees run down to get Backlund off Bret, but Bob Backlund leaves only when he's good and ready. He finally releases the hold and looks down at his hands with guilt and shame over what he had just done. This was supposed to lead to the return of Papa Shango as to say that Bob Backlund was acting this way because he was under Papa Shango's spell, but that idea was scratched in favor of Backlund just being out of touch and bitter. Kind of ironic if you think about it in Bret's case. Good story told here as far as the match goes with a monumental post-match segment that would kickstart a feud that would last through WrestleMania. ***½

January 22, 1994
Providence, RI
Providence Civic Center

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Yokozuna (6/13/1993)
Intercontinental Champion: Razor Ramon (9/27/1993)
World Tag Team Champions: The Quebecers (1/17/1994)

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Ted DiBiase. Thus begins the year to find the right wrestler-turned-color-commentator to accompany Vince on the PPVs.

Bam Bam Bigelow (w/Luna Vachon) vs. Tatanka

Ludvig Borga was supposed to face Tatanka here, but a legit ankle injury kept him away from this match. He would never return to the WWF. It's okay because these two hate each other too. Tatanka avoids a charge to start and hits a crossbody before going to work on the arm. He hits a DDT, but Bigelow moves away from a flying bodypress to take over. Bigelow splashes Tatanka in the corner and sits down on a Flying Sunset Flip attempt – crushing the poor guy. Bigelow wins a slugfest with a dropkick and grabs a bearhug. Once Tatanka escapes, he hits a powerslam for 1-2-NO! Oops, they crossbody each other. Tatanka NO-SELLS a turnbuckle smash and starts up the WAR DANCE, so Bigelow stops all that nonsense with an enziguri. I love it when he does that! The crowd loves it too. Bigelow sets up for a moonsault (!), but Tatanka moves out of the way. Flying Bodypress from Tatanka gets the 1-2-3. (8:12) Solid if unspectacular opener. **

WWF Tag Team Champions The Quebecers (w/Johnny Polo) vs. Bret & Owen Hart

They show a lengthy Bret/Owen/Quebecers video package covering the last two months starting with Survivor Series when Owen got all pissy with Bret for causing him to be eliminated from the Hart family match. Owen made a challenge to Bret, but Bret said he would never wrestle his brother under any circumstances. They patched things up and decided to go after tag team gold. The Quebecers lost the tag belts to the 1-2-3 Kid and Marty Jannetty on Monday Night Raw two weeks prior to the Rumble [review is at the bottom], but won them back in MSG the following Monday. So here we are. Bret and Pierre start the match. Pierre catches Bret coming off the ropes for a slam, but runs into a kitchen sink. Owen tags and hits a beautiful hiptoss into a pin for two. Tag to Jacques, he wants a handshake. Owen's not falling for such! Jacques ducks low off a whip and takes a suplex. Jacques takes a dropkick and retreats to his corner for some hugs. Owen hits an enziguri on Jacques for two. Bret tags in for some Demolition Decapitation treatment on Jacques for 1-2-NO! Small package gets two. Sunset flip gets two. Rollup gets two. Pierre comes in and pummels both Bret and Owen. The Quebecers look to whip the brothers into each other, but Bret hits the mat and Owen shoots over and rolls Jacques up for two. The Quebecers head out to Johnny Polo, which is Raven in a loud Hawaiian shirt. Back in, Bret delivers an atomic drop to Jacques. Pierre tags and gets flung into the ring from the apron. Owen tags and hits a jumping clothesline for two. Gutwrench suplex gets two. Bret is back in and runs right into a powerslam for two. Owen gets drawn into the ring as Pierre chokes Bret with the tag rope. The Quebecers double-team some more as once again Owen comes in to protest. Jacques hits a back elbow (no jumping back elbow?) and Pierre comes off the middle rope and takes a boot to the face. HOT TAG TO OWEN! He goes dropkick crazy on the Quebecers! Belly-to-Belly Suplex on Pierre! Spinning Heel Kick on Jacques! He goes for the SHARPSHOOTER, but Pierre breaks it up. The Quebecers take over on Owen with a double-team hotshot. Cover, 1-2-NO! Owen comes back and dropkicks them both for a tag out to Bret. Russian Legsweep to Jacques and a backbreaker to Pierre! DOUBLE NOGGIN KNOCKER! Owen grabs Jacques for Bret to come off the ropes to nail him, but Johnny Polo separates the ropes and causes Bret to fall out to the floor and crash his knee on the guardrail. The Quebecers start kicking at the knee, slamming the knee with chairs, and beating the knee with Polo's golf putter. Owen's doing all he can to stop this, but the damage has been done. Back in the ring, the Quebecers deliver the Quebec Crab/Flying Leg Drop combo. The Quebecers go for the SLINGSHOT SENTON on the knee, but Bret moves. Instead of tagging Owen like he SHOULD have done, Bret tries to apply the SHARPSHOOTER. Oops, he can't get it applied right because his knee hurts too bad. The ref is pretty sure Bret can't continue and calls for the bell. (16:47) After the match, Owen kicks Bret's leg out from under…his leg. This had good action and an even greater story told here. It's where the feud begins and you can actually pick a side. At first, you're thinking Owen's just being a jerk, but now Bret's looking a little selfish. He wanted to try and win on his own and look what it cost his brother and himself as well. Don't forget that later on, both Owen and Bret must compete in the Rumble match. As for the Quebecers, it makes them look awesome by beating one of the WWF's biggest stars to the point he couldn't continue. Everybody wins! ***½

WWF Intercontinental Champion Razor Ramon vs. Irwin R. Schyster

JR & Monsoon take over commentary duties for this match so Vince and DiBiase can call the action on WWF Radio. This winds up being the biggest match in the singles career of IRS, set up by him stealing Razor's gold necklaces. IRS would hang around for another year, work for Ted DiBiase, and then jump ship back to WCW to pick up where he left off in 1991 as Michael Wallstreet sans Alexandra York and the computer. IRS pisses Razor off to start and pays for it with punches and an atomic drop for two. Razor gets dumped and IRS takes over. IRS avoids a boot as he comes off the top and drops an elbow for two. Razor elbows out of a chinlock, but runs directly into a kitchen sink. A knee to the gut, not an actual kitchen sink. IRS legdrops the groin and reverts to the chinlock with his feet on the bottom rope for leverage. Oh, he's a crafty sonuvagun. Guess that means no rope-assisted abdominal stretches this time. Razor battles out and hits the Fallaway Slam for 1-2-NO! The ref gets bumped. Razor avoids the briefcase shot and nails IRS with it instead. He covers, but DUH the ref is down. Razor hits the Belly-to-Back Superplex and calls for the RAZORS EDGE. Out comes Shawn Michaels to hit him with his fake IC belt. IRS covers as the ref wakes up for the count of three. IRS celebrates with the fake belt as ref Earl Hebner runs down to fill ref Joey Marella in on what just happened while he was presumably dead. With IRS up in the corner with his arms raised in jubilation of his title win, Razor comes by and delivers the RAZORS EDGE for 1-2-3! (11:47) Call me crazy, but I liked this match. It sets up what we already know is inevitable: Razor vs. HBK. **½

WWF World Champion Yokozuna (w/Mr. Fuji & Jim Cornette) vs. The Undertaker (w/Paul Bearer) – Casket Match

So Undertaker has been freaking Yokozuna the crap out with caskets lately, which leads to this match. Pretty much everyone at least on the internet world assumed Taker was walking out of this show as champ since this is *his* specialty match, but I don't think anybody had any clue what they were about to witness. They presumably have a staredown contest to start, which Yoko loses! Yoko then storms at Taker, but he sidesteps and hits a pair of jumping lariats. They head to the floor where Yoko stumbles right into the ringpost. Wow, never seen that before. Taker heads out and gets slammed on the steps, but he NO-SELLS! Back in, Taker delivers OLD SKOOL on Yoko. Taker misses a third jumping lariat and rolls out to the floor. Yoko follows and grabs a chair, but Taker blocks and nails Yoko instead. Yoko grabs some salt from his wooden pail and throws it in Taker's face. Guess his face is like a snail or something. You smash his face into STEEL steps, you get nothing. But salt? That's a whole other story. Taker gets hit in the head with a chair. Back in again, Yoko clotheslines Taker and puts him in the casket. Taker's head and arms are sticking out though. He's not done yet. He punches his way back into the ring, but takes a Belly-to-Belly Suplex. ZOMBIE SIT-UP! Chokeslam to Yoko! Wow, Yoko took the chokeslam better than Hogan at Judgment Day '02. Taker hits the Jumping DDT! Now he rolls Yoko into the casket and tries to close the door, but Crush runs down and stops him just in time. Oh, here we go. He gets rid of Crush momentarily, but now the Great Kabuki and Genichiro Tenryu storm the ring. They do nothing. Bam Bam Bigelow is out here now. Together, he and Crush corner Taker to make it four-on-one. Meanwhile, Fuji has taken the urn away from Paul Bearer. While the foursome try to put Taker in the casket, Bearer comes over and avenges the urn by taking out both Fuji and Cornette. Bearer raises the urn in the air and HERE COMES THE UNDERTAKER! Out comes Adam Bomb. Taker starts destroying people again until Bigelow nails him with that wooden salt pail. Now Jeff Jarrett is out here looking like a Power Ranger. The Headshrinkers are here! It's NINE-on-one now including Yokozuna. They continue to ravage the Undertaker until he's placed in the casket. OH WAIT! He's up again before they can close the door. People are being punched all over the place. Uh oh, Diesel's here. That'll stop the Undertaker for sure. In hope of finishing Taker off once and for all, Yokozuna hits Taker with the urn! The urn gets dropped and GREEN SMOKE starts to come out of the urn! Is Barbara Eden's evil twin sister here? After the Headshrinkers both splash the Taker, its time to roll him into the casket for good. Everyone dogpiles the casket door so that the Undertaker will just go away. (14:25) The group of mid-card heels wheel the casket up the aisleway until smoke starts to exude from it! An overhead camera shot of the Undertaker supposedly from inside the casket shows up on the video wall. BONG! He's alive! That's right. He will not rest in peace. After his message of hope, he goes back to sleep as apparently his body explodes and then an inverted Undertaker floats up the screen. As he goes off the screen, his body or "soul" is levitating up to the heavens, I can only suppose. An absolute "What the %&@# did I just watch?" moment. In reality, which this whole post-match segment was the opposite of, Taker needed some time off because of a back injury. He'll back though. Don't you worry. ¼*

The Rumble Match

To ensure more non-stop action, they change the rules to where we have a new entrant every ninety seconds instead of every two minutes like in every other Rumble before. In other words, their talent roster pretty much sucks. Scott Steiner is #1 and Samu is #2. We have some back and forth stuff from these two, culminating with a double underhook slam by Scott. They try and throw each other out as #3 Rick Steiner walks down to the ring. It becomes a 2-on-1 affair with the Steiners in control. Bottom line, Samu gets eliminated. Kwang, better known as Savio Vega, is #4. Rick Steiner takes some GREEN MIST~! in the face from Kwang to put him down for a while. Scott tries to keep Kwang at bay while he checks on his big bro. Owen Hart draws #5. He gets rid of Rick. Bart Gunn enters in at #6. Nothing really happens until our #7 guy Diesel comes down to the ring. Out goes Bart and Scott. In kind of a surprise if only to me, Owen gets tossed out! Kwang misses the SPINNING HEEL KICK and takes a clothesline out to the floor. Bob Backlund is our #8 entrant. He wisely goes after Diesel's legs and almost gets him out. His failure is Diesel's success, as Backlund gets tossed out pretty quickly. He stands alone in the ring as #9 Billy Gunn comes down to face Diesel. Billy gets in a few licks, but runs into a boot and he's outta there. And once again, Diesel stands alone. Meanwhile in the back, Lex Luger is being attacked by Great Kabuki and Genichiro Tenryu! Mr. Fuji's a genius! There's no way Lex Luger can make it to the Rumble match now! #10 is Virgil – subbing for Kamala. It's because Kamala's black, isn't it? Anyways, Virgil is in and Virgil is out just like that.

Randy Savage enters in at #11. He's the first guy to last more than a minute alone with Diesel. Savage nearly gets Diesel sent out as #12 Jeff Jarrett storms the ring to save Diesel. Those heels sure do stick together. Jarrett levels Savage with a dropkick and I sit and wonder why those two never really met in the ring. It could've been a decent match, I think. Jarrett tosses Savage, but he avoids elimination by grabbing the top rope. Jarrett walks away and does his little strut, so Savage runs up from behind and tosses him like there's no tomorrow. Crush is #13 and Savage directs all his attention to his "former" friend. Savage delivers a pair of double-sledges and decides to work on Diesel some more. That gives Crush the chance to nail him from behind and give Savage the Tilt-a-Whirl Backbreaker. As Savage gets eliminated by Crush, Doink the Clown walks down to the ring at #14. Crush and Diesel stop trying to get rid of each other and look over at the freakin clown behind them. Doink sprays them with his "flower" and pounds away, but Diesel and Crush are just too big for him. To make things worse for Doink, Bam Bam Bigelow drew #15. Bigelow walks in and presses Doink and drops him on the floor! Diesel and Crush continue to stick together and double-team Bigelow. Here comes Mabel at #16. Diesel takes a pair of Mabel avalanches. "Sparky Plugg" Bob Holly is our #17 guy. Oh yes, what a wonderful gimmick. At one point, all five guys start trying to throw one another out at the same time. And nobody goes out. Shawn Michaels enters the ring at #18. Diesel looks over at Shawn like he wants to throw him out of here. Shawn begs off in the corner. Ahh, Diesel's just joking with you, HBK! Everything's going to be alright. Bigelow, Crush and Mabel gang up on Diesel and with a little help from Shawn, Diesel gets tossed out. Mo draws #19 and helps out his partner Mabel. He nearly eliminates Shawn Michaels, but Crush makes the save. Bigelow takes a Mabel avalanche while Shawn skins-the-cat back in after Sparky Plugg tries to throw him out. Greg FN Valentine enters in at #20. He elbows a bunch of people and then blends in with everybody.

#21 is Tatanka. To emphasize the "every man for himself" principle, Mabel holds onto Tatanka while Shawn hammers away. Tatanka moves and Mabel gets rocked. Nothing comes of it though. He just goes and stands on the other side of the ring instead of doing something about it. The Great Kabuki enters in at #22. Aside from the storyline with Luger, I'm not sure, out of all of Tenryu's buddies, why he's here exactly. This is his one and only WWF match as far as I know. Everybody but Mo throws out Mabel. We needed somebody eliminated, so it might as well be Mabel. Valentine REALLY tries hard to get rid of Michaels, but the guy just won't go out. And what do you know, #23 is Mr. America himself – Lex Luger. First order of business is to get rid of Kabuki. Done. Next order of business? Do nothing. Genichiro Tenryu draws #24. He chops the crap out of Luger for a good while. Nobody shows up to be #25. It was supposed to be Bastion Booger, but apparently Vince says he got sick? Alright, there's nine guys in the ring and only six of them are actually doing anything. #26 is Rick Martel. Just a lot of brawling ensues with no real drama at all. Bret Hart limps out at #27. He sells the knee VERY well, by the way. Immediately, Crush starts stomping on his knee. There's just way too many people in the ring right now. Fatu enters in at #28. After a long battle with Crush, Luger finally gets rid of him. Marty Jannetty draws #29 and goes right after Shawn. Marty beats the crap out of him and connects with a superkick. Adam Bomb enters the ring to our final Royal Rumble entrant. He's big, he's bad, but doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning. Bret Hart flips Sparky Plugg over the top to the floor. The mindless brawling continues with nothing of note happening for way too long of a period of time. Finally, Martel rids the ring of Valentine. Tatanka sends Martel over the top to the floor. Luger ducks a charge from Adam Bomb and he goes flying out to the floor. Fatu eliminates Mo with a superkick. Bigelow tosses out Tatanka. Bam Bam misses a corner charge on Luger and Flair Flips out to the apron as Luger clotheslines him down to the floor. While Marty was trying to toss out Shawn, Shawn managed to flip Marty out to the floor. Tenryu goes back to chopping Luger and gets tossed out from behind by Bret AND Luger.

Final Four: HBK, Luger, Bret and Fatu. Bret and Shawn square off while Luger concentrates on Fatu. Bret and Shawn go through a couple near-eliminations, but Bret's knee gives out. Meanwhile, Fatu NO-SELLS a faceslam from Luger and answers with a superkick. Fatu and Shawn look to suplex Luger out to the floor, but he lands on the apron and fights them back. Bret and Luger do the cross-corner double-whip. Shawn leaps over Fatu and charges into a backdrop to the floor by Luger while Fatu charges into a backdrop from Bret that puts him out on the floor! Now it's just one on one. Luger and Bret tie-up and tumble out to the floor at the exact same time! (55:08) Both refs Joey Marella and Earl Hebner are confused as to who is the winner. Ironically enough, Hebner says Bret. Joey sticks with Luger. The replays show horrible angles that tell us nothing, rendering them completely pointless. President Jack Tunney comes down and makes the decision – BOTH guys have won the Rumble match. After the decision, they shake hands and go their separate ways. This showed a lot of the same problems that the '93 Rumble match had – limited star power and nothing happened that really mattered. The Rumble can be used in a lot of ways and one of them is to continue or enhance feuds. Instead of trying to rekindle something that was dead already with HBK and Jannetty, why not have Razor come out and cost Shawn the Rumble match? Apart from that, you have to hand it to a few guys like Shawn and Bret who really shined in this match. Shawn was always good with those dramatic near-elimination spots. As for Bret, he put on one of the best performances throughout the whole show by selling the knee all the way to the end. Fantastic stuff from these two greats. **½

Final Thoughts: I wouldn't call this a necessity to go along with WrestleMania at all. Sure, you have the all important moment where Owen kicks Bret's leg out from under his leg. Plus, you have the controversial Rumble match finish. All of those moments are wrapped up in some nice video packages at WrestleMania though, so there's no real need to see this unless you're a big Bret Hart mark, a Bret/Owen feud completist, or if you just can't live without seeing the Undertaker levitating. From my vantage point though, I give the Royal Rumble 1994 a thumbs down all the way.

And now for a special bonus match…

WWF Tag Team Champions The Quebecers (w/Johnny Polo) vs. 1-2-3 Kid & Marty Jannetty – (Raw 1/10/1994)

This is the one-year anniversary show of Raw. Geez, hard to imagine it's been fifteen years now. Bobby Heenan is gone and Randy Savage is back on commentary with Vince. Wow, ladies are screaming for this one! Jannetty gets a quick victory roll on Jacques to start for 1-2-NO! Jannetty gets another rollup for another near-fall! Suh-nap! The Kid and Pierre tag. 1-2-3 Kid nails Pierre with a roundhouse kick for two. Now Jacques gives the Kid a try. Jacques calls Pierre in for some help to escape a headlock. That brings Jannetty in as well. The Quebecers look to ram the challengers heads in from opposite corners, but they get shoved off into one another. Dropkicks put the Quebecers on the floor to regroup with Polo. Back in, Pierre takes a double backdrop. Jannetty presses the Kid into Pierre for a dropkick. Pretty cool! Jacques takes a dropkick and now the Quebecers are back out on the floor. They head up the aisleway now like they are going to leave, but they're just stalling. They're not going anywhere. Back in again, Jannetty puts the brakes on a monkey flip and pops Jacques in the face as we go to commercial. During the break, Jannetty connected with a superkick on Jacques and got the three-count! Oh wait, he actually had his foot on the bottom rope. Match continues. Pierre pulls the top rope down to send Jannetty tumbling out to the floor. Even so, some heel miscommunication still manages to ensue! HOT TAG TO THE KID! He hits a kick combo on Jacques and cannonball splashes Pierre down on the floor! Holy crap. Springboard clothesline to Jacques inside the ring. Meanwhile, Johnny Polo has apparently sent Jannetty into the guardrail. In the ring, 1-2-3 Kid gets shoved off the top by Pierre to the mat below. Jacques distracts the ref while Pierre chokes the life out of the 1-2-3 Kid in their corner with the tag rope. The Quebecers deliver a double-hotshot for 1-2-NO! After another ad break, we return to see Jacques connecting with the Jumping Back Elbow for two. Jacques tags Pierre and backdrops him onto the Kid for another near-fall. The Quebecers deliver a weak modified version of Total Elimination. Jacques hits a Piledriver to set up the double-team SLINGSHOT SENTON! It connects! They go for another one, but Jannetty runs over and knocks Pierre off the top to the floor. Superkick to Jacques! Jannetty tries his best to wake up the Kid. The crowd is going INSANE! HOT TAG TO JANNETTY! He goes dropkick crazy on the Quebecers! DOUBLE NOGGIN KNOCKER! Polo gets punched off the apron. ROCKER-PLEX to Pierre! Cover, 1-2-3! We've got new champs! (13:47 shown) Fantastic formula tag match. The Jannetty/Kid team's tag title reign would only last a week before the belts went right back to the Quebecers. ***¼

August 30, 1993
Auburn Hills, MI
Palace at Auburn Hills

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Yokozuna (6/13/1993)
Intercontinental Champion: Shawn Michaels (6/6/1993)
World Tag Team Champions: The Steiner Brothers (6/16/1993)

Your hosts are Vince McMahon & Bobby Heenan.

Razor Ramon vs. Ted DiBiase

After Razor lost to the 1-2-3 Kid in an upset back in May, DiBiase started to make fun of him and offered him a job as his personal servant since he obviously didn't have a future in wrestling, causing Ramon to turn face and befriend The Kid to take on Money Inc. DiBiase attacks Razor from behind before he even gets his jacket off. Razor comes back and hits the Fallaway Slam. DiBiase takes a clothesline out to the floor and gets flipped back in from the apron. He begs off, but he's just setting Razor up to yank him in the corner. Backbreaker gets two. Razor elbows out of a chinlock, but runs into a knee. DiBiase delivers a swinging neckbreaker and calls for the MILLION DOLLAR DREAM, but Razor elbows him away. DiBiase dumps Razor out and exposes a turnbuckle. Back in, Razor blocks the turnbuckle smash and gives one to Teddy instead. RAZORS EDGE! It's over. (7:32) A fine little match. Razor looked like a star in this one. On the other hand, this would prove to be DiBiase's last WWF match of his career due to his nagging injuries. **

WWF World Tag Team Champions The Steiner Brothers vs. The Heavenly Bodies (w/Jim Cornette)

This is the more well-known Pritchard/Del Ray combination of the Heavenly Bodies. In one of those minor details that Cornette pays attention to like all great wrestling minds do, Cornette sells an injury from SMW and wears a neck brace to continue the illusion for the few hundred SMW fans. I personally didn't pay much attention to SMW until around 1995 when Brad Armstrong was the big fish in the little pond. Well, as big a fish as Brad Armstrong can be in a regional independent wrestling promotion. Great fed though if you like your southern 'rasslin and New Jack mixed together. Anyways, we're in Detroit where the Steiners are royalty. This is the second match in a row where the heels do a Pearl Harbor job to start the match. Scott gets thrown out so the Bodies can double-suplex Rick. Ouch! Double-Flapjack to Rick. That didn't land well. Scott makes the save and whips the Bodies into each other. Scott monkey-flips Del Ray across the ring, followed by a double-hiptoss by the Steiners on Pritchard. Pritchard ducks a Steinerline from Rick, but Del Ray does not. Instead, Pritchard walks right into a Release Belly-to-Belly Suplex from Scott. He follows that up with a Tilt-a-whirl Slam on Del Ray! Awesome segment there. We now go from there to a normal tag match. Scott press slams Pritchard and backdrops Del Ray. Rick tags in and clotheslines the heels out to the floor as they change up their gameplan with Corny. Back in, Scott delivers a pair of atomic drops on the Bodies, but doesn't see Pritchard coming up from behind with a bulldog. Nice! Pritchard dumps Scott out to allow Del Ray to cannonball onto him off the apron! Del Ray tags in and hits a SWEET hurricane DDT on Scott. The Bodies deliver a drop toehold/knee drop combo. Del Ray hits a Superkick and boy am I enjoying this Jimmy Del Ray guy in a completely heterosexual way, of course. Cover, 1-2-NO! Pritchard tags and chokes Scott in the ropes. When the ref backs him away, Cornette jabs him in the mouth with his tennis racket. Del Ray tags and tries another hurricane DDT, but Scott counters with a release Northern Lights throw. Pritchard cuts off the tag, but ducks low off a whip and takes a double underhook slam. HOT TAG TO RICK! He goes STEINERLINE CRAZY! Steiner Bulldog to Del Ray! Cover, 1-2-NO! Uh oh, Pritchard throws Scott off to the floor when he tries a ten-count corner punch. Meanwhile, Rick hits a Powerslam on Del Ray! Cornette throws in the tennis racket right in front of Rick's face. He still gets WHACKED with the racket from behind by Pritchard. Del Ray covers for 1-2-NO! MOONSAULT PRESS by Del Ray, but Rick moves and Pritchard takes the blow instead. Scott comes in and gives the FRANKENSTEINER to Del Ray for the win! (9:29) GOOD tag team wrestling like this makes me feel good inside. Is that weird? ***½

WWF Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels (w/Diesel) vs. Mr. Perfect

It's the battle of the greatest IC champions of all-time. This is the second time a feud over this claim has happened in six years. The first of course was between Randy Savage and the Honky Tonk Man in late '87. As far as Diesel goes, he's just a big guy at this point who looks out for his buddy Shawn. Quick start as both guys counters each other a bunch. Perfect works the arm as much as he can. He even armdrags HBK off the top, which was pretty cool. Perfect catapults Michaels out to the floor. He follows him out, but Diesel distracts him and causes Perfect to turn around into a superkick. Back in the ring, Shawn goes to work on the back. He whips Perfect from corner to corner and applies a backbreaker. Perfect punches out and starts his comeback. They fight over a backslide as Perfect flips Shawn over into the PERFECTPLEX for 1-2-NO! Diesel pulls Perfect out to the floor and pays for it by receiving some right hands. Perfect turns around and catches HBK in the gut as he comes off the apron. Perfect tosses him back in the ring into ref Earl Hebner, so Diesel takes advantage and sends Perfect into the ringpost to get him counted out. (11:19) Well the finish isn't satisfying considering the buildup, but the match itself isn't as bad as everyone says it is. With the huge egos that were griping over how Vince was handling the IC belt at the time, the finish is exactly how you would expect it to go down. Arguably, this was Hennig's final match that had any real drawing power. Perfect attacks Diesel backstage, which kick-starts Diesel's WWF career. ***¼

1-2-3 Kid vs. Irwin R. Schyster

This is 1-2-3 Kid's PPV debut. IRS launches Kid up in the air a time or two before he counters with a dropkick in mid-move. He screws around with the Kid and gets rolled up out of nowhere for two. The Rope-Assisted Ab Stretch is applied, which is the standard for all Mike Rotunda matches. Kid elbows out of a chinlock, kicks away at IRS in the corner, and hits the MOONSAULT PRESS that got him the upset win over Ramon for 1-2-NO! La Majistral cradle gets two on IRS. Enziguri connects, but IRS hits the WRITE-OFF (jumping lariat) for the win. (5:45) A total squash that really didn't need to be. *½

For this next match, Owen and Bruce Hart have front row seats. Anybody seen the Memphis/USWA reactions to the Bret/Lawler feud? Owen Hart was the main event heel USWA unified champion who defends his brother Bret, while Lawler is of course the god of Memphis who can do no wrong. I recommend you check it out on YouTube sometime. Anyways, Lawler comes down to the ring on crutches and an iced-up knee. He goes on to say that he can't wrestle tonight because some old blue-haired lady pulled out in front of him on the way to the show and caused a ten car pile-up. Heenan ~ "Probably Helen Hart." Yeah, probably so. He sends his court jester to wrestle in his place. That court jester is none other than Doink the Clown!

Bret Hart vs. Doink the Clown (w/Jerry Lawler)

Lucky for us, it's still the great Matt Borne edition. Doink tosses confetti at the crowd out of a tin pail. That is until he gets over to Bruce Hart who gets a pail full of water thrown at him. Bret beats Doink in and out of the ring for several minutes. He starts to chase Lawler away, but gets nailed from behind by Doink and then eats the steel steps. In the ring, Doink goes after the leg. He hits a shin breaker and wraps the leg around the post for two. STFU! Wow, so John Cena gets his wrestling technique from watching Doink matches? Who woulda thunk it? Bret elbows out, but gets stuck in the STUMP PULLER! Doink grabs the ropes and the hold gets broken to set up the WHOOPIE CUSHION! Oh wait, Bret gets the knees up to block. Russian legsweep! Flying elbow drop! SHARPSHOOTER! Then all of a sudden, Jerry Lawler seems to be completely healed. It's a miracle! He hops in the ring and blasts Bret with a crutch to break the hold. (8:57) No bell, but I'm guessing that's a DQ win for Bret. Owen and Bruce are being held back by referees and security. Lawler continues to beat the heck out of Bret and heads back to the dressing room with Doink until WWF President Jack Tunney stands in their way. If Jerry Lawler doesn't return to the ring to face Bret Hart, he'll be banned from the WWF 4-LIFE. You know, I would love to see Tunney do the nWo 4-LIFE hand signal. So far, so good. ***

Bret Hart vs. Jerry Lawler

Bret BEATS Lawler back to the ring. He drops a headbutt right to the "lower abdominal region" or as Dr. Dre might say, "deez nuts". They go to the floor where Bret nails him in the back with the other crutch. Lawler leads Bret around the ring and then pops Bret in the gut with the crutch to gain a breather. He continues to choke him down with it as well. Back in the ring, Lawler antagonizes Bruce and Owen to turn the ref's attention away so he can jab Bret in the throat with the crutch. Bret's trick knee acts up and Lawler receives a low-blow to turn the tide. DOWN COME THE STRAPS! Bret fires away. NOW LAWLER'S STRAPS COME DOWN! Backbreaker from Bret gets two. Piledriver gets followed up by a flying elbow. SHARPSHOOTER! (6:34) Lawler gives up, but Bret refuses to release the hold. The longer he leaves it on, the louder the crowd gets. A fleet of referees, security, Pat Patterson and Jerry Brisco combined can't get Bret off Lawler. Bruce and Owen finally come in the ring and only then does Bret release the hold. Because of Bret's post-match actions, ref Bill Alfonso reverses the decision in Lawler's favor. Lawler does the stretcher job, allowing Bruce and Owen to get in some free licks on his way to the back. Just a perfectly booked feud. Definitely the best of 1993. Of course, even this is only the beginning. ***½

Ludvig Borga vs. Marty Jannetty

Talk about your highs and your lows. Jannetty was the IC champ a few months ago and now he's about to get eaten alive by the new Finnish guy on the block. Borga's been in the WWF for around two months and he's undefeated. He looks like a shorter, beefed up version of Heidenreich. He's pretty impressive in my opinion. Not a draw or anything, but he's pretty good in the ring. He launches Marty up in the air and PUNCHES him on the way down. Jannetty hits a pair of superkicks, but that's as close as he comes to taking Borga off his feet. TORTURE RACK gets the submission win for Borga. (5:15) Borga would hang around in the WWF until January, then he becomes a boxer, and later on a successful politician in his homeland. America's not the only place where anything is possible. *

The Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzales (w/Harvey Wippleman) – 'Rest in Peace' Match

The rules are simple: no DQ, no countout, must be a winner. Wippleman has the urn to begins things and there is no Paul Bearer around just yet to take it back. Taker tries to put him down with clotheslines, but that's no good. They go to the floor where Taker meets the steps head-first. Gonzales finds a chair and cracks it across Taker's back. Taker gets whipped into the steps for the knees-first bump. Back in, Taker tries to crawl towards the urn, but Gonzales stands in his way. Paul Bearer makes his return and starts walking towards the ring with a black funeral wreath. Wippleman apparently takes offense to Bearer being at ringside, but runs into the fat which knocks him down. Bearer reclaims the urn and raises it high in the air to revive the Undertaker. He hits a bunch more clotheslines, but a flying clothesline is the only thing that will take Gonzales off his feet. Cover, 1-2-3. (8:05) Afterwards, Gonzales gets rid of Harvey Wippleman with a CHOKESLAM. At least it was better than their WrestleMania match. Lucky for me, there's no more Giant Gonzales/El Gigante matches to recap ever again. ½*

The Headshrinkers & Bam Bam Bigelow (w/Afa & Luna Vachon) vs. The Smokin' Gunns & Tatanka

Heenan lets us know that Shawn Michaels has left the building. Thanks, Bobby. We get Tatanka vs. Bigelow to start. They both think crossbody blocks at the same time, leading to a Billy and Fatu switch. Billy hits a flying clothesline, but gets run down with a shoulderblock. Samu kicks Billy over to Bart for a tag. Bart becomes our lovable-cowboy-in-peril and gets passed around for a while. Typical Samoan stuff – headbutts, shoulderblocks and powerslams. Solid action though. Bigelow misses a corner charge to set up the HOT TAG TO TATANKA! He SLAMS Bigelow and hits a Flying Bodypress for 1-2-NO! Bigelow starts pounding away, but Tatanka starts up the War Dance. An enziguri kick will put a stop to that, Bam Bam. See, told ya. Samu tags and hits a Flying Headbutt for 1-2-NO! The Gunns are cleared out of the ring, leaving Tatanka all by himself with the heels. Bigelow gets whipped into the corner for a splash to set up a TRIPLE HEADBUTT! Now they all head up top for a TRIFECTA OF FLYING HEADBUTTS, but Tatanka sits up and avoids them all. The Gunns are back in as Fatu and Bigelow roll out for STEREO PESCADOS! Meanwhile, Tatanka rolls up Samu for 1-2-3! (11:16) Everybody was feeling it here and what we got was another great match on this card. Must be something in the water. ***

Randy Savage makes his SummerSlam appearance by holding the American flag while Aaron Neville sings the national anthem.

WWF World Champion Yokozuna (w/Mr. Fuji & Jim Cornette) vs. Lex Luger

So Luger goes from being a narcissistic prick to Captain America in the span of a couple weeks. He slams Yokozuna on a ship and travels the country in the Lex Express bus hanging out with sick children and making them smile leading up to his WWF title shot. That's pretty much the last two months of Luger's life in a nutshell. Oh yeah, and he now wears a protective forearm pad so as to not have an advantage over his opponents because of the steel plate in his forearm. Because cheating and getting caught for it would be un-American, right? During the face-off, Fuji tries to sneak in on Luger from behind, but the eyes in the back of his head sees him coming. Yoko elbows Luger away when he tries to roll him up off the ropes (what was Lex thinking?), but he misses the Legdrop. Luger starts kicking away at the leg and hits the jumping elbow drop for two. Wow he NEVER hits that. Luger hits a corner clothesline and follows up with the ten-count corner punch. Once that's over, Yokozuna chops him in the throat and chokes him down in the corner. When the ref pushes him away, Fuji climbs up to the apron to literally throw salt in Luger's game. Good thing Lex has those eyes in the back of his head, because they come in quite handy again in this match. Lex punches Yoko and tries to slam him, but that's not going to work just yet. Yoko superkicks him down instead and takes him to the floor for some splashing up against the ringpost. Luger avoids a chairshot and comes back with a pair of flying double ax-handles back in the ring. A third leap off the top is a flying forearm, which finally puts Yokozuna down. Cover, 1-2-NO! Luger clotheslines Yoko down from behind for 1-2-NO! Double-KO spot happens next. Cornette hops up on the apron as Fuji rolls a wooden (?) pail into the ring. WHAM! Yoko nails Luger right in the face with it! Yoko crawls over for 1-2-NO! Belly-to-Belly Suplex gets two. Yoko chokes Lex in the ropes and then delivers a Morishima-like backdrop suplex! Cover, 1-2-NO! Now Yoko grabs the nerve hold. Luger elbows out and tries to slam Yokozuna again, but Yoko falls on top for 1-2-NO! Yoko hits the Legdrop for 1-2-NO! Luger avoids the BANZAI DROP and the butt splash in the corner leading to the eventual slam on Yoko. Heenan ~ "HIPLOCK! HIPLOCK!" Fuji gets nailed and OFF COMES THE FOREARM PAD! Luger hits Yoko with the BIONIC FOREARM, which knocks him clear through the ropes and to the floor. He's totally KO'ed and gets counted out to give Luger the win. (18:00) Definitely Yokozuna's longest match to date, and not a bad one at that. You have to hand it to Yokozuna for sticking it out and not relying on so many restholds. The Steiners, Tatanka and Randy Savage all come down to celebrate with Luger like he actually just became champion or something. Red, white and blue balloons drop from the ceiling – the whole shebang, American style. It's so cheesy and overly patriotic, I think it would probably even make Jim Duggan blush. **½

Final Thoughts: What a fun show filled with hard work and great booking for the most part. The next several months would prove to Vince that Bret Hart was his new guy for 1994 and that he didn't need a Hulk Hogan prototype. I'm so glad Bret didn't get the title shot here because then the Bret/Lawler feud leading into the Bret/Owen feud might never have happened or at least been as awesome as they were. Overall, a thoroughly entertaining show. Thumbs up for an often times overlooked and underrated SummerSlam 1993.

Yeah! A Royal Rumble rematch. Razor is still suffering from the embarrassment of losing to the Lightning Kid, or the Kid, 1-2-3 Kid or whatever you want to call him back in mid-May. Whenever the crowd wants to make him mad, they just chant 1-2-3 and that’s all it takes to get him real steamed. Bret works an armbar for a while, but stuff happens to keep you interested. Razor sends Bret shoulder-first into the ringpost to turn the tide. Razor stomps the hands, which doesn’t sound all that relevant, but it will be later. He hits the Fallaway Slam for two. Running powerslam follows and gets another two-count. He tries an elbow drop off a side slam, but Bret moves and starts his comeback. Atomic drop/clothesline gets two. Russian Legsweep gets two. Backbreaker gets two. Flying Vertical Elbow Drop gets two. Bret rolls Razor up for another two. Bret wants the Running Bulldog, but Ramon shoves him off into the corner. Razor gives the “It’s over.” sign and attempts the RAZOR’S EDGE, but Bret counters just like at the Rumble into the backslide. He can’t get him down, so he kicks off the ropes, flips over Razor into a small package for 1-2-NO! Oh, that should’ve been the finish. Bret gets in the ref’s face. Probably shouting something about being screwed, I’m sure. Razor nails Bret from behind and goes for the Back Superplex, but Bret falls on top for 1-2-3. (10:28) This was just Bret on auto-pilot. ***

Hughes and Wippleman stole Taker’s urn on the previous episode of Superstars, so he’s got that with him. How many people stole that freakin’ urn between the years of ’92 and ‘96? Sheesh. If they couldn’t think of anything creative for Taker, they went with somebody just stealing the urn. Hughes grabs a neck wrench on Perfect for a while. Perfect avoids the Bossman straddle and hits the Running Neck Snap. He pounds away on Hughes in the corner and when the ref moves him away, Wippleman slips Hughes the urn. WHAM! Perfect goes down in plain sight of Earl Hebner, which gets Hughes DQ’ed. (6:02) Yes Curtis, you have the urn. We know. ¾*

- Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Bam Bam Bigelow – First Round King of the Ring Match

This is Duggan during his singlet days and was having some pretty decent matches with Shawn Michaels for the IC title. Duggan can’t seem to take the big man off his feet. Oh wait, yes he can. Duggan misses a charge in the corner and hurts his ribs. So Bigelow does what anybody with an ounce of brains would do – he works the ribs. He grabs a bearhug, but the chants of USA gets Duggan going. He avoids a diving headbutt, but Bigelow falls on top of him when he tries a slam for two. Back to the bearhug. Duggan escapes again and finally gets that slam he’s been wanting ever since he hurt his ribs. He goes for the THREE POINT STANCE, but Bigelow moves and Duggan hits face-first into the top turnbuckle. Bigelow climbs up top and connects with the FLYING HEADBUTT for the win. (5:01) Felt like an old SNME match. Quick and inoffensive. *

- Tatanka vs. “The Narcissist” Lex Luger - First Round King of the Ring Match

Because of Luger’s motorcycle accident in ’92, he had a metal plate inserted in his elbow. Vince decided to take advantage of it and included that in his gimmick. When Lex would hit you with the loaded elbow, it would knock out anybody it hit. WWF officials finally decided to do something about it by making Luger wear an elbow pad. I guess that would make all the difference? Tatanka’s entrance interrupts Luger’s posing in the mirror, so he throws Tatanka out of the ring so he can finish. Haha, I love that. Tatanka gets back in and turns the HUGE mirror over on top of Luger and then chops him out to the floor. Back in, Tatanka grabs an armbar. That eats up a couple minutes. Luger finally elbows Tatanka away and starts working on the chest by burying elbows and such. He now goes to the neck with a chinlock. Luger’s getting those same positive crowd reactions he received in 1989 when he worked heel. Tatanka tries a couple desperation rollups, but Luger stays on top of him. When Luger starts turnbuckle smashing, Tatanka begins his war dance. Chops abound, including a Wahoo chop for 1-2-NO! Powerslam gets another two. Tatanka hits a Flying Judo Chop for 1-2-NO! He tries a Flying Crossbody, but Luger moves out of the way. Luger hits his own Powerslam for 1-2-NO! Suplex connects for another two. Apparently unaware of the time limit, Luger hits the backbreaker as we reach the 15-minute mark. (15:00) Boring start, but it more than delivered at the end. Because they went the time limit, both guys are eliminated. That puts Bigelow right into the finals to meet the winner of Bret/Perfect. Luger wants five more minutes because he came here to win the King of the Ring (duh). Well they aren’t getting five more minutes. Instead, Luger pulls of the elbow pad and KO’s Tatanka. Once Hogan leaves and Luger slams Yokozuna, there would be no more “narcissism” for Lex - at least not from a gimmick standpoint. **¼

Bret’s selling the stomps done to his hand earlier in his match with Razor, as his left hand is taped up. It’s the little things. This one picks up quick from the get-go once Perfect shoves off the headlock. They trade slams and then Bret catches Perfect with a crucifix for two. Bret hits a crossbody, but the momentum off the cover puts him on the floor. He shoots back in with a sunset flip for two. Perfect plays the “shades of gray” heel by burying a knee in Bret’s gut to break away from the headlock. Standing dropkick puts Bret on the floor. Perfect holds the ropes to help Bret back in, but then he kicks him when Bret doesn’t see it coming. Knee lift from Perfect gets two. Perfect then kicks Bret out to ringside. Once he’s on the apron, Perfect shoves him off into the guardrail! Awesome! Bret’s knee is killing him now. Perfect hits another knee lift and then connects with a missile dropkick! Cover, 1-2-NO! Perfect whips Bret in the corner for the chest-first bump for 1-2-NO! Perfect heads up top again, but Bret is there to crotch him and superplex him to the canvas! Cover, 1-2-NO! Bret starts kicking Perfect in the back of the knee, causing him to flip all over the ropes. That leads to the figure-four. Perfect finally makes the ropes. Bret grapevines the leg, but Perfect legdrops to escape. He puts Bret in the corner and throws Bret across the ring by his hair! Perfect grabs the sleeper. Bret’s too close to the ropes though. Perfect holds on until the 4.99999 count just before he would’ve been DQ’ed. I love it. Now he reapplies the sleeper in the middle of the ring, using the ropes for leverage. Bret escapes by slamming Perfect’s face into the turnbuckle. European forearm nearly takes Perfect’s head off. Now Bret tosses Perfect across the ring by his hair, which ends with Perfect splitting himself on the ringpost. Bret hits an atomic drop/Russian legsweep combo for 1-2-NO! Backbreaker/vertical elbow drop connects for 1-2-NO! Bret wants the SHARPSHOOTER, but Perfect grabs and twists the taped up hand to block. Perfect wants the PERFECT-PLEX, but Bret keeps a wide vertical base and counters by giving Perfect a suplex over the top rope to the floor below. They just barely make it back in before the countout. Perfect cradles Bret for 1-2-NO! Oh wait, it’s reversed and Bret gets 1-2-3! (19:08) Without a doubt, one of my all-time favorites. I liked this one better than their SummerSlam ’91 match because it felt like Bret and Perfect were more evenly matched here, as where in ’91 Bret was the underdog. By the way, they shake hands afterwards. ****½

Well this will calm the crowd down after that last barn burner. This would be Hogan’s last WWF PPV appearance until February 2002. We get a near two-minute stallfest to start. Once they lock-up, it’s WrestleMania 6 all over again, as they take turns shoving one another out of a tie-up. Yoko takes over with throat thrusts and a slam. He whips Hulk from corner to corner and then tries for the Running Butt Splash, but there’s nobody home. Hogan fires back and tries a slam, but nah uh .He fires back and attempts another slam, but still not going to happen. Hogan hits a pair of clotheslines, but then Yoko stops him on the third try with a clothesline of his own. Hogan avoids a splash, but then runs into a bearhug. It’s the typical bearhug segment where Hogan fights it for as long as possible and then he starts to pass out, but then he wakes up and makes sure his arm doesn’t fall three times to kickstart his comeback. On the comeback part, scratch that. Yoko levels him with a Belly-to-Belly Suplex. Cover, 1-2-NO! It’s HULK UP time! He punches Yoko three times, whips him in the ropes for the Big Boot and connects! But he doesn’t go down. A second Big Boot connects, but Yoko will not fall. How about a third Big Boot? Ok, he finally falls. Hogan hits the LEGDROP for 1-2-NO! Whoa! Mr. Fuji’s on the apron and he gets nailed. Wait a minute, some strange looking photographer is standing on the other side of the apron. Maybe his camera doesn’t have zoom? Hulk walks over to him and gets blasted with a fireball! Talk about a defective camera! Yoko throat-thrusts and LEGDROPS Hogan for 1-2-3. (13:12) Yokozuna has regained the belt.
