This is how it works…

The Arte y Pico comes with rules.

I find all these blogs inspiring and a great read, these women are a very talented bunch and happily share their thoughts and creative ideas with their readers. I'm one of the lucky ones who found them by "chance" and haven't looked back, I regularly check out the latest posts and when I have time leave a comment (though not always as sometimes I've already spent way too long on the PC :blush:)

I thought that international prizes are supposed to be handed based on real data. It seems that they are not any different... I mean you can buy yourself a decent international prize without really wining it!

Yes... they won for excellence in management and achievement... the VP boasted that we have a very distinguished career path for our employees... yes that is true.. so distinguished that it does not REALLY EXIST! Come on! I've been there for more than 4 years and no body got a clue at the meaning of career path. Every time I went there and complained that there isn't any set career path he would smirk and say "we are studying it!". And the otherthing is achievement.... I don't know about you guysm but last time i checked achievement in business would mean profit. That company had a small project spanning 4 years and not delivered. Another spanned two years and not completed. A big project that shoould've spanned a year lasts for a 2 years now and complete. Where is the ACHIEVEMENT. I'll tell you where: a 5 years old company with no more than 10 employees that have been with the company for more than 1 year! A trurn over rate of employees of about 2 per week! Yes almost every week you'll be seeing people leaving and people coming. And what's the total number of employees? less than 50!

So I wonder or even send a big question to the people in charge of the BID award... HOW DID YOU AWARD that sompany?

I'll start saving... maybe i can buy the next award... if my old lame company could... every body should!

This is me accepting my MVP award at a special Dell banquet. I don't generally wear all black like this to work, but I was running late, so that's what I ended up wearing.  I found this banquet to be really funny in the sense that Dell was honoring all of these distinguished people, that have generated A LOT of money for the company, and they still had a cash bar. Hahahaha. 

I generated the most revenue in my business segment over the entire quarter--my first quarter ever in sales-- so I showed up cashless, assuming Dell would at least buy me a drink, but I was completely wrong.

So wrong in fact, that I had to have some other MVP at my table buy me my drink. I paid him back at work via our internal mail system; luckily the guy thought it was as funny as I did.

I am very shocked because, quite frankly, some of those stories were really good.  Professional writer good.  So even if I don't win I will be happy having made it to the finalists.  but, I really want to win.

I could never make it on one of those awards shows.  Anyone see the Friends episode where Joey is up for a daytime Emmy and he loses?  He had been practicing his losing face all week but come crunch time he just has a fit.  He is cussing and all ticked off and the camera catches his temper tantrum.  It is too funny!  That would be me.  Thank God there isn't video on this laptop!

I especially want to thank my fellow writer and good friend Susan Sosbe.  Her edits really helped me with my story. It was close, but not close enough for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue’s control team as they narrowly missed out on a national award. At last night’s Council Worker of the Year gala dinner in Bournemouth, the team were pipped to the post by the staff of Karelia Court in Hull, who won the Flood Response Award for 2008.

The award was part of a new category this year, to recognise the efforts of the emergency crews involved in last year’s devastating floods. People had been voting all over the country since May 1st by text message or by visiting the LGA Television website. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and Lincolnshire County Council rallied behind the team for two months, but it was not quite enough to win on the night. The control team finished second out of five shortlisted nominees and graciously congratulated the winners as the results were read out. Chief Fire Officer, Mike Thomas said:

“I am very proud of the team to make it this far through their dedication and hard work.

“Despite the fact they haven’t won the award, this is still a victory as they have done a superb job in a difficult situation.

“I would like to thank the people that voted for the Control Team as their support is always appreciated, and we will continue to serve the people of Lincolnshire in the best way possible.”Councillor Peter Robinson, Executive Councillor for Community Safety said:

“The nomination itself was a fantastic achievement for the team and was thoroughly deserved.

“It was a very close result, but we cannot be too disheartened as to make it this far is a great achievement.

“The county should continue to praise the work of these people, as without their hard work during last year’s floods, the situation in Lincolnshire would have been more disruptive.”

There were a record 350 nominations for the awards this year, with 41 entries making it to the final shortlist. Last night’s winners received £250 and an engraved trophy.

We won a New Statesman New Media Award, in the Inform and Educate category, which is very nice indeed thankyouverymuch. Big thanks to the judges, the New Statesman and everyone who nominated us, cheered us on and generally spread the love.

A beaming Minogue, who recently overcame breast cancer, received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Prince Charles, who was standing in for the Queen Elizabeth at the ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

"It is an incredible honor for me to receive this award. It makes me feel both humble and proud to be recognized for doing a job that I love so much," she said.

Minogue became a household name in Britain in the 1980s after starring as Charlene in the Australian TV soap "Neighbours." (news)

Cubbie, our now-almost-four-month-old-puppy, finished Puppy Kindergarten tonight.

I'll tell ya, it wasn't an easy ride; there were times that he just would have nothing to do with treats or commands, but just wanted to play with the other dogs. Oh, and there was that other time where he pooped in the middle of class when Dave was out of town... you know, typical puppy behavior.

That's why when we went into the Puppy "Graduation" class tonight, we were hopeful and curious to see the turn out.

After an hour and a half of competition categories that scored each puppy with a specific number of points, Cubbie and his other two litter mates got the first three places in the class.

So of course, as a mommy, I have to brag about Cubbie being first place two out of the four events, and receiving the "Best Puppy Award". Obviously we couldn't be prouder :)

As Dave and I say, we hope this is the first title of many to come!

A disabled construction worker who rescued a 12-year-old from an attacking cougar and a pair of passers-by who saved an elderly woman from being run down by a train are among 26 people awarded Carnegie medals on Wednesday for their heroic acts.

The Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awarded the medals to a diverse group of Americans and Canadians, retelling the stories of courage that came to their attention from newspaper articles, tips or through its Web site.

Some of those honored as heroes died while trying to rescue people in danger. Others were injured in their attempts. Some saw the person they were trying to save die, despite their efforts.

The 26 recipients, or their survivors, will receive $6,000 in addition to the medal.

Their stories are the stuff of movies.

In August 2007, for example, disabled construction worker Marc Patterson, 45, kicked a cougar in the head repeatedly to try to get it to release 12-year-old Colton T.G. Reeb. When the animal refused, Patterson got down on his knees and applied pressure to the cougar's neck, forcing it to release Colton.

In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Deborah Chiborak and Gerard Beernaerts were each passing separately by a railroad track in town when they saw 89-year-old Winifred M. Lindsay between the tracks, her motorized scooter on top of her.

As Chiborak was nearing the tracks, the crossing gates closed and bells indicated a train was nearing. Beernaerts, a city bus driver, was passing at the same time and jumped from his bus to assist.

With the train getting closer, the two heroes pulled Lindsay and her scooter from the track. The train rumbled by seconds after the three were safely off the tracks.

Others honored include Curtis Dawson, 47, of Astoria, Ore., who helped rescue a tugboat captain from drowning in the Columbia River; Dennis H. Morton, 38, of Prineville, Ore., who helped rescue Oma D. Pratt, 54, from her burning mobile home; and Samara Marie White, 15, of Davison, Mich., who died trying to save her 4-year-old sister from their burning home.

Steel baron Andrew Carnegie launched the hero fund in 1904 after hearing about rescue stories from a mine disaster that killed 181 people. Since then, $30.6 million has been awarded to 9,199 people. The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission meets five times annually to choose honorees.

FLVS Receives Better Government Competition Award

Pioneer Institute Applauds Online Program for Effective and
Innovative Education Practices

Orlando, FL (June 25, 2008) – Florida Virtual School’s (FLVS) commitment to improving K-12 education won the school the Better Government Competition (BGC) Award from the Pioneer Institute, an independent, non-partisan, privately funded research organization. The online program was recognized because of its focus to create equitable access to instructional excellence for students throughout Florida for more than decade.

“We are pleased to recognize FLVS as the winner of the 2008 Better Government Competition Award. For the past ten years, they have worked tirelessly to create a student-centered learning environment. As a result, more students have access to an excellent education, regardless of where they live or their socio-economic standing,” said Jim Stergios, executive director of Pioneer Institute. “The leaders at FLVS are part of a new generation of educators who are closing the achievement gap by transforming the public education system. We applaud them for their hard work, innovation and passion.”

Now in its 17th year, Pioneer Institute’s annual BGC Award showcases innovative ideas and programs to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of government. Florida Virtual School’s unique apporach to learning has changed the role of the classroom experience, made achievement the constant and time the variable. Among the FLVS accomplishments highlighted by Pioneer Institute were the school’s completion rate of between 80 and 90 percent and course selection, which includes advanced placement and honors courses offered to students who might not otherwise have access to these educational options.

“Being recognized as an institution that is transforming education is truly an honor. Working one-on-one with students, our teachers strive to personalize the learning experience for each of their students and engage them in activities where they will gain knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the global economy,” said FLVS President and CEO Julie Young. “As partner with districts across the state, our goal is to support schools by helping their students thrive acadmically.”

The 2008 BGC winner was chosen from over 140 entries, submitted by businesses, government officials, and citizens from across the United States. A panel of distinguished judges chose the best submissions from the entries.

Pioneer Institute is an independent, non-partisan, privately funded research organization that seeks to change the intellectual climate in the Commonwealth by supporting scholarship that challenges the “conventional wisdom” on Massachusetts public policy issues.

        Heath Ledger is the actor who portrays the Joker in this movie, The Dark Knight.  Heath died in January of this year of what is believed to be an accidental drug overdose.  In this movie, Heath plays the joker who is seriously disturbed; and, has been described as deranged by others.  The visual look of his character is seriously whacked...he is scary to look at.   The Joker is evil in this movie and he looks it as well. 

        The buzz is beginning to build though that Heath deserves an Oscar nomination for his acting in the supporting actor category.  I for one however, have a seriously hard time thinking of watching this movie.   I know he is dead, I know that he was a good actor; but, I don't want to feel like a vulture flying over the corpse of Heath Ledger as i watch the big screen...as well as, paying for the priviledge to do so!  He has only been dead for 6 months...not enough time for me to watch it; and, not feel guilty for being entertained by the acting.   I just can't get past the knowledge that for a time it was wondered if he died on purpose or accident; he left a grieving family behind and this is the last movie he was in; and, it is such a morbid character.   Am I the only one who feels this way?
