I discovered something in Gmail yesterday that I meant to mention that some of you will say, "Well duh, Peng. I've been known about that for a while." I'll give you a gold star, but if I just found it yesterday than I bet others don't know you can do it either. First let's get today's links out of the way.

Ubuntu Productivity: Better backup, syncing, and sharing. Windows and Mac users know about the Dropbox service but Linux users have been left out in the cold. There's a Linux version currently in alpha testing, but you can request an invite. The author lets you know why that's such a big deal, and after reading his post and checking it out I've requested an invite myself.

Asa Dotzler: consumer reports: stop using safari, get firefox. This isn't just Asa being a Mozilla evangelist (his job), this is a major consumer testing organization saying that safari shouldn't be used. At all, alt least for now.

Steven Rose: Ultamatix - Ubuntu NL warns against. The Ubunteros in the Netherlands (and Flanders) have looked at the Automatix replacement and don't just say "Danger, Will Robinson!", they tell you why you should avoid it.

Scott Ritchie: Wine sucks and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. The WINE maintainer (it really is supposed to be in all caps since it's a recursive acronym) for Ubuntu has some major beefs with our favorite Windows programming layer for Linux. Luckily tomorrow he'll post his plan for fixing the issues, which I'll post, but I wanted to post this link today to give you reasons to watch for tomorrow's link.

A Gmail Tip

Like many of you I have filters set up on my Gmail account to help store my email in a way that I can hopefully find it again later. But I don't save all of my email in Gmail, since I download all of it into Evolution at least once a day. So I end up having to select Unread messages, then deselect the news emails since they get deleted once I read them, and start reading my new emails. But it turns out I don't have to select then deselect. Instead, since messages are already labeled thanks to my Gmail filters, once I read them I simply click the X box beside the Inbox label.Voila! The message has been archived without dumping you to your inbox.

Do you use Google Translate to translate web pages in a foreign language? There are bookmarklets available to give you one click translations of web pages. I only wish I had found those sooner. It would have saved me a ton of time even sooner.

/me checks his email and RSS feeds one more time

Yep, that's a lid. I'll post if I find anything that just won't wait until tomorrow. Enjoy your Hump Day.;)

Abaixo veja o vídeo mostrando o funcionamento do Ultamatix.

Ubuntu Restricted Extras and Multimedia Codecs

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Skype

Ubuntu-Tweak

Amarok 2 Neon (alpha)

Ultimate Edition Themes - Themes, Wallpapers, Icons & Usplashes

Juegos

Descarga

sudo dpkg -i ultamatix-1.8.0-3_all.deb

Chris Blizzard: two cool things: ogg support in mozilla and canvas in IE. From the "it's about damned time" file, Firefox 3.1 will finally support Ogg Vorbis/Theora (audio/video) files natively. Linux users have long loved the open source Ogg media formats, and now their favorite browser will know what to do with them out of the box, even on non-Linux platforms. I'm not sure what this means for codecs on OSX and Windows.

Melissa Draper: You're doing what now?! Ms. Draper interrupts her hiatus from blogging to post a very important Public Service Announcement on the problem with using scripts found online that use the apt "--force-yes" flag. That's right, it's a really bad idea. And Ultamatix (which I mentioned Saturday) uses it a lot, which makes using the successor to Automatix a really bad idea.

Alan Pope: Ubuntu UK Podcast Episode 11 Out. The UK Ubuntu LoCo (Local Community) Team recorded some segments for their latest podcast at the recent LUGRadio Live UK 2008. Although some of us Yanks may need closed captions since we threw some tea into Boston Harbor so many years ago.

It seems I may have had more possible posts from Planet Mozilla, expect people got trapped at the Mozilla Summit thanks to a rock slide on the road they were expecting to take to Vancouver. There's been good natured jokes about whether summit attendees were going to have to resort to lifeboat team building events, but there is an alternate route, even if it does take eight hours rather than two and a half hours.Luckily Neil Deakin, who didn't have that many hours to spare, found an even better route to Vancouver, so he won't have to be late for his own wedding.

Dan Glazman came up with an even funnier way to look at the problem, and in true open source fashion someone filed a bug on the problem. I can't help but laugh at some of the comments added to it. I think I'm going to have to subscribe to it, if for no other reason than to get even more humor out of today than my favorite cheezburger joint. But hey, we found the remote!

Fabrizio Balliano: 10+2 things you'll get with Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex". We're less than three months from the next version of Ubuntu, and we even have a third <del datetime="00">beta</del> alpha that just came out (thanks for the correction, Mackenzie), but Fabrizio gives us some things to look forward to having when the Ibex hits in October.

Edward Lee: Firefox 3.1 Restricts, Matches, Keywords. There will be new ways to limit what comes up in the Smart Location Bar. (Kudos to Ed for using that name for the bar rather than the name that so many of us hate.)

Christer Edwards: OpenOffice Easter Egg and Joey Stanford: OpenOffice Credits. These two posts have some info on some fun Easter eggs in the open source productivity suite OpenOffice.org.

Justin Dugger: Backgrounds for people with no talent. Justin praises the official background for Ubuntu Hardy (which I also love), but he also has a way for anyone to make a new desktop wallpaper, even if you aren't artistically inclined.

LinuxDevices.com: "Handheld recording studio" mixes with Linux. For all those who want to set up a demo recording studio in their place of abode, or even build a Linux-based rig for doing remote recording, Trinity Audio Group may have just the thing you've been looking for.

Steven Rose: "Ultamatix: The New Automatix". While some people hated the Automatix software source before it was shut down back in March, some people thought it's closing was bad news. Someone's come out with a replacement, although not everyone's seeing this as good news. Personally I think there are already good ways to install just about anything in Ubuntu and if you can take the time to learn how to use them there's very little software you won't be able to use.

Anat Narayanan: Microsoft joins Apache. You saw that right, Microsoft is now a sponsor of the Apache Software Foundation. I guess they're really putting their bankbook their positive comments about Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). And someone from Mozilla got thanked for helping educate Microsoft about why FOSS is such a good idea.

Here comes the same for Fedora 9, FedoMATIX (v0.1Beta). It currently works on the command line only, but supports more than 60 additional softwares/apps already.

The software-auto-installer script automatix which has faved many a hearts will unfortunately not be available for Ubuntu 8.04 and the releases henceforth. The main automatix developers, as they say, have become busy with their other commitments and won`t be able to work for automatix. Automatix, thi is fo n00bs, is a aut - installation script that simplifies your life by suitably categorising your daily-needs (Softwares and Apps, DUH) in Ubuntu world, and fetching them through the wire for you. However, the main developers have also hinted about an Automatix3, which will be a whole new app, the catch being it will be exclusive to Pioneer Warrior for some reasons they have stated here. But the Good news is, Ubuntu 8.04`s brand new Codec and Software finder tool and it`s re-engineered Synaptic Software Manager are just so awesome that absence of automatix won`t create much of a difference.

On the 24th of March, the Automatix team finally threw in the towel. Automatix has served for a coup

On the 24th of March, the Automatix team finally threw in the towel. Automatix has served for a couple of years as a community server for restricted packages and has been very useful for users who want a one stop shop for all their restricted codecs and software which, due to licensing issues, could not be distributed with official builds of Linux distributions like Ubuntu.

"Well the day has finally come, development of Automatix has been discontinued. We are doing this, NOT because we think Automatix is no longer necessary on Ubuntu and Debian, but because all of the Automatix developers have become wrapped up in more pressing commitments."

Whilst Automatix has drawn a lot of flak in recent months and probably has as many people who hate it as are fans, however few can dispute it is a great time saver for people who are relatively new to the world of F/OSS and Linux in general. In a community typically seen as having a high learning curve, anything which helps break new users into the joys of Linux should be encouraged, not put down by the old guard who prefer to do things solely in the terminal.

It should be noted that although Automatix v2 is likely not to be developed further, Automatix may still be developed (as v3) for the platform the key members of the team are now working on. We shall have to see what happens in the coming months.

Well the day has finally come, development of Automatix has been discontinued. We are doing this, NOT because we think Automatix is no longer necessary on Ubuntu and Debian, but because all of the Automatix developers have become wrapped up in more pressing commitments.

echo "deb http://www.getautomatix.com/apt etch main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Segundo Paso:

Bajamos la llave

wget http://www.getautomatix.com/keys/automatix2.key

Tercer Paso:

Importamos la llave

gpg - -import automatix2.key

Cuarto Paso:

En este paso exportamos la clave pública

gpg - -export - -armor E23C5FC3 | sudo apt-key add -

Quinto Paso:

Actualizamos el source.list

sudo apt-get update

Sexto Paso:

Finalmente pasamos a lainstalación

sudo apt-get install automatix2

5. Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) - Some sort of emulator (but not an emulator :P), of Windows, for Linux. It lets you install Windows software on Ubuntu.

To install (don't get scared, it's actually quite easy, you just have to copy/paste things):

First, open a terminal window. Then add the repository's key to your system's list of trusted APT keys by copy and pasting the following:

sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/feisty.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

For Ubuntu Dapper (6.06): *64-bit packages not available*
sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/dapper.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

Then, you can install Wine from WineHQ like it were any other package, such as by using the Synaptic Package Manager under System->Administration. Alternatively, you can install from the terminal by running 'sudo apt-get update' to update APT's package information and then 'sudo apt-get install wine'.

Instalei hoje o Ubuntu x64 no meu Athlon 64 x2 4000+.

1 - Baixei a ISO do Ubuntu 64: http://espelhos.edugraf.ufsc.br/ubuntu-releases/gutsy/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso

2 - Instalei no HD deixando 10Gb ext3 e 256mb swap.

sudo passwd root

4 - Atualizei o apt-get:
a - Gere o sources.list : http://www.ubuntu-nl.org/source-o-matic/
b - No terminal: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
c - Cola o que foi gerado no item a, e salva.
d - No terminal: sudo apt-get update (será baixado uns 10mb de links interessantes)

b - Instalar pacote.
c - Aplicações -> Ferramentas do Sistema -> Automatix
d - Instale tudo que você precisa.

7 - Pronto!

Last week one of my coworkers - let's call him Ainsley - asked whether I had a small stereo in my large collection of electro junk that I was able to sell him. Unfortunately, apart from a cheap chinese clock radio there was nothing I was able to offer. Knowing that the only PC in the house just left with one of the kids to university, I suggested a small form factor pc as multimedia centre and source for music and to keep in touch with the kids.

Cost was a big issue, so as I had a boot full of recycleables anyway, I dropped by the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park and chose from a large heap of old and dusty PC a small little number that still sported a motherboard and a Pentium II. From a heap of PCI cards an D-Link ethernet card and an ISA sound card was quickly chosen. Cost: 7 NZ dollars (ca 5 US dollars/ 4 Euros).

I took the little dusty thing home, de-dusted it, plugged it in: nothing. Not a beep. So I exchanged the Power Supply Unit with one of the old ones that were lying around my own pile of electro rubbish and was rewarded with an angry beep by the mobo. Fortunately the friendly proprietor of Small Bytes Computing in Oamaru had his own pile of elector junk and 2 168 pin DRams were found and these 192 megabytes stopped the motherboard from making shrieking noises. An old keyboard and an old serial mouse were found as well, and I even had a nice NVIDIA AGP card from what must have been 2000 lying around.

The motherboard is an 'Atrend' ATC-6130. I presume Atrend doesn't exist anymore, as I couldn't find any evidence of it on the web, but there was a large amount of drivers and bios updates floating around, so the old thing was updated in no time. The bios was set to 1998, so that had to be changed, and USB support is rather patchy. Nevertheless: an old 5 Gigabyte seagate HD and an even older optical drive was found in that big pile of old hardware, and surprisingly the little computer booted easily into Damn Small Linux.

The question is of course, which operating system to run. Even with 192 MB of Ram, Ubuntu is a bit heft. Geubuntu is (while certainly a technical marvel) plain ugly with its golden theme and eye candy. Damn Small Linux is too geeky to use for a user who can barely find the start button on a windows machine, and as I wanted a Debian based distro (I'm not particularly good with the other distros) I went for Xubuntu. Thanks to Envy (doesn't Alberto Milone look smouldering on that picture) and Automatix the little thing was set up in no time and is now able to play MP3s and CDs (unless you distract it with other hard disk activity) and it even attempts some frames of a flash movie on MP3. A flawed machine, no question, but able to email, play music and surf the web.

All for 17 dollars.

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

sudo dpkg -i automatix2_2.0.5-7.10gutsy_i386.deb
