The Rogers Cup, the first of back-to-back Masters Series tournaments prior to the Olympics, began yesterday in Toronto. The Canadian tennis event and the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters next week in Cincinnati, both hardcourt tournaments featuring all the big guns, could help settle who is really numero uno as well as provide a preview for the U.S. Open in late August. Questions, questions. Can struggling world No. 1 Roger Federer extend his 234-week reign at the top of the game or will surging Rafael Nadal supplant the Swiss Maestro with a torrid summer? The No. 2-ranked Spaniard certainly has momentum in his corner after blitzing Federer in the French Open final and then following that up with an epic five-set victory over the five-time defending champion at Wimbledon a month later. Also in the mix, at least for bragging rights if not the points race, is Novak Djokovic, last year's champion in Toronto. The No. 3-ranked Serbian is arguably the best hardcourt player in the game, with titles at the Australian Open and Indian Wells earlier this year. Federer has been shut out of the first three grand slam tournaments for the first time since 2002 and desperately wants to regain his dominance prior to the U.S, Open. Nadal, who pulled out of a clay court tournament with a knee injury the week following Wimbledon, must prove his knees can withstand the rigors of the summer hardcourt season. After winning the same tournament in Stuttgart last July, Nadal went without a title until April of this year when he won Monte Carlo. Included in that drought were straight-set, one-sided losses to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semis at Melbourne, Djokovic in the final at Indian Wells, and Nikolay Davydenko in the final at Miami. The common factor in the defeats: all were on hardcourts. In fact, just five of Nadal's 29 career titles have been on hardcourts. So the Mallorcan has something to prove. The effort is always there, no question, but the knees don't always seem to hold up to all the pounding on unforgiving surfaces. I look for Djokovic to emerge as the dominant player this summer, even if he can't garner enough points to supplant either of his rivals in the rankings. He really has very little pressure on him. All the interest and scrutiny is focused on the rivalry between Federer and Nadal and their duel for No. 1. Djokovic has defeated Federer two of the last three times they've met on hardcourts and has posted a 3-2 record against Nadal on surfaces other than clay or grass. Serve 'em up.

El sueco se despertó a tiempo y aprovechó el mal momento que esta pasando el tenista de Tapiales. En el comienzo del partido parecía inclinarse todo a favor de Cañas ya que quebró rápidamente el servicio de Soderling y se colocó 5-3 arriba. Además, el escandinavo daba constantes señales de que no le salía nada.

Pero a partir del noveno game de la primera manga todo cambió. Robin Soderling, ganó cuatro juegos de forma consecutiva para adjudicarse el primer set por 7-5, y luego los estiró a nueve ya que se puso 5-0 en la pizarra del segundo capítulo. Finalmente, el argentino logró sostener por única vez su saque en el sexto game, pero no le alcanzó ya que el sueco sostuvo su servicio y se llevó el match.

El próximo rival de Soderling será el ganador del duelo entre el español Fernando Verdasco y el brasileño Thomaz Bellucci.

El pupilo de Gastón Etlis no gana un partido en el Masters Series de Toronto desde el año 2002, cuando se coronó campeón al ganarle Federer, Kafelnikov, Safin, Haas y Andy Roddick.

Tan sólo 54 minutos de juego le bastaron al teutón para doblegar al ex número uno del mundo y poner el historial ante el malloorquín 6-5 a su favor. Haas, quien se ubica en la posición número 46 del escalafón mundial pasó por encima a Moya en todo los aspectos, sobretodo con su servicio. El ibérico solamente pudo ganar seis puntos con la devolución.

El primer set se lo llevó Haas por un quiebre y ya en el segundo sacó ventaja rápidamente de dos breaks, para luego cerrarlo por 6-2. El alemán estuvo intratable con su saque, concretando 4 aces, ganando 26 de 28 puntos jugados con su primer servicio y 10 de 14 con el segundo. Además, a la hora de devolver estuvo efectivo ya que tomó tres de las cinco oportunidades de quiebre que generó.

En el siguiente turno del Rogers Masters, el ex número dos del mundo se medirá ante el ruso Nikolay Davydenko, un rival que lo derrotó en tres de los cuatro enfrentamientos previos.

Por su lado, el galo Gilles Simon, quien viene de coronarse en el ATP de Indianápolis, le ganó de forma contundente al estadounidense Donald Young por 6-1 6-3 en 59 minutos de juego. El próximo escollo del francés será Roger Federer.

A partir de las 17 horas de nuestro país, será el turno del debut de Guillermo Cañas, que se verá las caras frente al sueco Robin Soderling, un rival muy complicado. En el único choque previo entre ambos, el escandinavo se impuso por 6-3 6-1 en la Copa del Mundo por equipos de este año.

"Chucho" finalmente le puso fin a una seguidilla de malos resultados al derrotar a un rival muy duro, como el tenista de Letonia de 19 años. A pura garra, el posadeño dio vuelta un partido que parecía escaparse de sus manos para así avanzar a la segunda ronda del Rogers Masters.

El primer set se lo llevó Gulbis en el tiebreak por un contundente 7-1, pero el argentino ubicado en el puesto 55 del escalafón se recuperó y en 44 minutos igualó las cosas al adjudicarse el segundo capítulo por 6-3. Ya en el set definitivo, el letón tomó rápidamente la delantera y se puso 5-1 con dos quiebres de ventaja, pero "Chucho" no se dio por vencido y ganó los siguientes seis games de forma consecutiva, para así clasificarse a la segunda ronda del torneo canadiense.

El próximo escollo del misionero será el chileno Fernando González que le ganó contundentemente al francés Julien Benneteau por 6-2 6-1. Acasuso buscará el pase a los octavos de final y vengar la derrota sufrida en este torneo, en la edición 2006.

Mañana será el turno del Guillermo Cañas, que se medirá ante el sueco Robin Soderling.

Juan Martín Del Potro es desde hoy el tercer argentino en el ranking, detrás de David Nalbandian (7º) y Juan Mónaco (19º). El tandilense, de 19 años, ya está 25º (la mejor ubicación de su historia) en la ATP tras sus triunfos en los torneos de Stuttgart y Kitzbühel.

Ayer, el juvenil argentino consiguió el tercer título del año para el tenis nacional, tras sus dos coronaciones -hace una semana se había impuesto en Stuttgart, Alemania- y la de Nalbandian en el ATP de Buenos Aires. Lo hizo tras superar en 59 minutos al local Jürgen Melzer por un aplastante 6-2 y 6-1. Y se llevó, además, un premio de 117.000 euros por un torneo que el año próximo no fue incluido en el calendario.

Otro ascenso importante en el ranking mundial es el de Máximo González, quien al llegar a la semifinal del torneo de Umag subió 25 puestos y quedó 76º, su mejor ubicación en el tenis profesional.

El joven de 19 años continúa indomable. La semana pasada se coronó por primera vez en su carrera en un ATP al ganarle en sets corridos al galo Gasquet en Stuttgart, y hoy hizo lo mismo, con baile incluido ante el local Melzer.

Con este triunfo en Kitzbuhel Del Potro se unió a Guillermo Coria, Gastón Gaudio, Agustín Calleri, Juan Mónaco, Guillermo Vilas y Horacio de la Peña, todos ellos campeones en el certamen austriaco. Además, logró el quinto título argentino en los últimos seis años en aquella ciudad para el tenis albiceleste.

Juan Martín jugó la final como un verdadero campeón, aprovechando los constantes errores no forzados de su rival y su mal carácter, propio de la situación de verse con tal desventaja en su propia casa. Nada de esto lo desconcentró y siempre siguió para adelante y arrasó a Melzer, quien ayer había hecho un gran encuentro ante el italiano Potito Starace.

Además, el tenista de Tandil se inscribió en la historia grande del deporte de la raqueta al ganar el título sin ceder ni un solo set.

El partido comenzó con el local sosteniendo su servicio, y a partir de allí la historia fue distinta. Del Potro se llevó cinco games de forma consecutiva, quebrando en el tercer y quinto juego del capítulo inicial. Luego Melzer sostuvo por segunda vez su saque y el argentino se adjudicó la manga por 6-2. En este parcial, el pequeño campeón obtuvo 29 puntos contra 19 de su rival y solamente perdió seis puntos con su servicio, con el que logró el 43 por ciento de primeros servicios y dos aces.

El segundo set comenzó con Del Potro "on fire," adueñándose por tercer ocasión con el servicio de su rival y tras sostener el propio se colocó 2-0. Cundo Melzer servía 15-40, este se sacó y tiro su raqueta rompió su raqueta contra el piso, luego levantó los dos breakpoints y descontó. A partir de allí, Del Potro nuevamente se adueñó del partido y cerró el parcial por 6-1, sin perder puntos con su servicio.

Tras 59 minutos de juego, Juan Martín concretó 4 aces, cometió una doble falta, obtuvo el 57 por ciento de primeros saques, ganó 27 puntos con su devolución y sólo cedió seis tantos con su propio servicio (todos en el primer set). De esta forma cerró una jornada inolvidable y 14 días de en sueño.

Gracias a los dos títulos conseguidos en fila, el argentino se meterá entre los mejores 25 tenistas del mundo y será el segundo mejor albiceleste en el ranking mundial.

First off, I’d like to express my sincere sympathy for those students stranded by the recent ASA fiasco and wish you all the early arrival of meaningful assistance to alleviate the current enduring hardship. I have no personal stake in this ordeal and neither lost nor gained anything from this occurrence. Nevertheless I can’t stop being indignant about both Prince and Reny of their incompetence and deceit whichever the characterization is appropriate that brought to cause a current plight onto those young aspiring Indian students.

In as much as I’d like to believe that Prince and Reny stashed away a sizable amount of cash somewhere as some still like to speculate or believe and therefore there’s some chance of recovery of their prepaid fees, it pains me to tell you all such chances to exist is literally infinitesimal if not nonexistent.

I know it’s easier said than done but give it a rest on a hope of recovery by a means of law suit. In the Breach of Contract case such as this, you will most likely prevail in the court and obtain a judgment. But think about it, what good is it that the judgment that can collect nothing from the defaulting party. A writ of execution issued from the court is just a useless paper of no value. Remember no one wins in a law suit except lawyers. (been there, done that, fought an airport use permit issue against a county ordinance in the US Federal Court and won the battle but lost the war in the end after consuming 3 years and $150K in legal fees, .a Pyrrhic victory indeed.

Judging from the reported size of operation,(110 students, 43 instructors, 40 aircraft) the monthly operating cost could be anywhere from $225k to $250k/mo. or more to keep that size of operation going. Remember ASA did not have $4.4 mil in a lump sum cash to start with. It’s an accumulative total revenue over the time they were in business. Unless they had an sufficient operating capital set aside which I doubt, their monthly operating expenses were entirely relied on one source; student fees. There’re good months with some surplus fund left and there’re some bad months with an insufficient amount of income even to cover the monthly overhead. It’s highly probable that ASA needed at minimum 4 to 5 new students to keep its doors open. All fees collected from the students were all spent long since and I bet they’re just scraping by from month to month with a hope of someday getting ahead with an arrival of new enrollment group consisting of substantial number of students. Unfortunately, that day never came and the KFA fallout was the last straw. And while they were still at it, the problems started to pile up one after another. It probably started with a minor student’s complain and then rapidly growing to many issues that eventually raised red flags and invited all kinds of government scrutinies from all directions FAA, County’s office, IRS, FTA (Calif. State Franchise Tax Board) and all. Despite less than honorable character references made about both Prince and Reny in many posts, I doubt they had planned this outcome from the beginning. It’s a case of pure incompetence and mismanagement. They had somehow managed to slip their foot in the door and pried open the business opportunity just in time to ride the surging tide of pilot shortages beginning to be faced by the Indian airlines.

Some of you already know about another flight school closure earlier this year which draws some parallels to the events at ASA in the order of far greater magnitude.

Silver State Helicopter (SSH) school headquartered in Las Vegas closed abruptly by filing Chapter 7 leaving 2,500 students out to the street. They operated over 250 helicopters at over 40 schools nationwide in the US. All students prepaid $70,000 each for their training fees. A Class action suit is pending in the Nevada Court and the lawyers are having field days. Good lawyers can compose an opposing lawyer’s argument before composing his own and they are very good and capable indeed and naturally they command high fees most can’t afford.

The only chance of recovery of the student’s fees from ASA is by naming KFA along with banks and lending institutions as co-defendant on the premise that they too are culpable for the damages sustained by those entrusting students. Their failure to perform proper audit and due diligence on the flight school led to the demise of the program today otherwise succeeded. This premise has a much greater chance of succeeding and the judgement amount of $5 mil range plus legal expenses has far more chances of collection from KFA and the Indian lending institutions involved than nonexistent collection probability from the duo Prince and Reny.

Now sit tight and think hard about the good advices offered in the Capt. Kishore’s post and begin to make a check list of your own action plan and proceed to follow thru on it one by one. BTW, make sure to insist on a kind of insurance policy like the one mentioned in the navdeev’s post if you’re fortunate enough to take out another loan again.

Before too long, you’ll be out of the soup and turbulence and you’ll be back cruising in the smooth blue skies again. How do I know this? Well I went through the similar ordeals few times myself since my first arrival in the US in 1968 from Asia and got my ATP, A&P, MEI, AD and few more ratings and pursued my aviation career until my semi-retirement from flight duties few years ago. Well, that’s my two cents. Hang tight and never ever give up your goal.

On the other side, it's the draw from hell. Murray, Safin, Querrey, Wawrinka, Verdasco, Canas, Soderling, Dancevic (did good last year), Ancic, Djokovic, Ferrer, Gasquet, Berdych, Nadal + many more. Only name missing is Federer. I can see a Murray-Djokovic QF. I think that's the only quarter that is easier to call. Although Safin, Ancic, Querrey, Canas are all capable of upsetting these bigger names. In the last quarter a Nadal-Ferrer QF is not far fetched. In fact, if Nadal has become such a good hard court player like he was during the spring, he should even beat Ferrer. We remember Ferrer easliy taking Nadal down in Shanghai, but I think Nadal feels more comfortable outside.

So with the seeds (or other favorites) the easies QF prediction is:

Davydenko-Blake
Murray-Djokovic
Ferrer-Nadal

Then, it's more likely that we get another Federer-Djokovic final. I doubt Federer would allow Djokovic to win it again. We'll see.

El hombre de Tandil cerró una semana espectacular, ya que logró su segunda victoria en un torneo ATP y tras ganar tres partidos en fila accedió por primera vez en su carrera a las semifinales de un certamen de esta categoría. Hay que destacar, que el domingo último Machi se había quedado con el Challenger de San Benedetto al ganarle a su coterráneo Diego Junqueira.

Mañana, Máximo festejará su cumpleaños número 25 sabiendo que a partir del lunes estará entre los mejores 80 tenistas del mundo.

El primer set fue prácticamente todo para el ruso, donde marco- sin dudas- una diferencia de categoría al momento de como le corría la bola a cada uno. Pero en el segundo set, Igor bajó un poco su nivel y el tandilense comenzó a inquietarlo con sus golpes altos y sin fuerza, lo que provocó que Andreev cometiera muchos errores. Lo más llamativo de la segunda manga fue que ambos se quebraron el servicio desde el 4 iguales hasta el tiebreak, que finalmente fue para Igor Andreev por 7-2.

De esta forma, el ruso jugará la segunda final en una semana ya que el último domingo disputó el partido por la definición del ATP de Gstaad, donde perdió ante el rumano Victor Hanescu.

Por otro lado, en el ATP de Amersfoort, Steve Darcis defenderá el título ante el español Albert Montanés. El belga para ello tuvo que eliminar en las semifinales a Marc Gicquel por 7-6 3-6 7-5 mientras que el ibérico hizo lo propio ante su compatriota Óscar Hernández por 6-1 6-3.

En Indianapolis, sobre cemento, Gilles Simon accedió a la final tras ganarle al local Sam Querrey por 6-3 4-6 6-4 mientras que Dmtry Tursunov se sacó de encima al máximo favorito James Blake por 4-6 6-3 6-4.

El presente de Del Potro es excelente, la semana anterior se había coronado en el torneo de Stuttgart, logrando el primer título como profesional de su carrera e igualando su mejor ranking histórico, y ahora llegando a la definición del ATP austriaco, lo que le permitirá a partir del próximo lunes meterse entre los mejores 30 tenistas del mundo.

Poco le importó a Juan Martín el haber disputado casi dos encuentros en el día de ayer, ya que completó su duelo de segunda ronda ante Sergio Roitman y luego venció al francés Devilder. Y hoy, con un físico envidiable, eliminó al rumano Hanescu, quien la semana pasada se consagrase campeón en Gstaad.

Nueve son los partidos que lleva invicto el joven tandilense y mañana a partir de las nueve de nuestro país buscará estirarlos a diez y además llevarse la segunda corona en fila de un certamen ATP.

El primer set fue para el pequeño gigante argentino por 6-3, donde se adueñó con el servicio de su rival en dos ocasiones y una de ellas para cerrar el parcial. En el segundo capítulo no se sacaron ventajas hasta llegar al tiebreak, que comenzó con el rumano con una ventaja de 2-0. Pero el buen tenis y la sed de gloria de Del Potro lo dieron vuelta y se colocó 6-3 en la pizarra, para cerrarlo finalmente 7-5 con su propio saque.

Este domingo, el argentino buscará su segundo título ATP al enfrentar a un rival que conoce muy bien y al que ya venció dos veces, una de ellas en Austria por Copa Davis nada más ni nada menos que en su debut copero. Y la otra en el Us Open 2007 con triunfo por 6-3 6-1 6-4.

A primer turno, el tenista de Tapiales jugó un durísimo encuentro ante el serbio Pashanski, que se resolvió en favor del bonaerense por 6-7 6-3 7-5 tras dos horas y 46 minutos de juego. Por su lado, "Machi" González dio la gran sorpresa del torneo croata al eliminar al local y segundo preclasificado Ivo Karlovic por 3-6 6-3 6-4 en dos horas y 13 minutos.

Con el triunfo de esta tarde, "Willy" Cañas avanzó quinta vez a los cuartos de final de un torneo ATP en la presente temporada mientras que el tandilense lo hizo por primera vez en su carrera.s

El de Tapiales tomó el servicio de su rival en ocho de las once oportunidades que generó. Por su lado, Pashanski hizo lo propio en las cinco de las seis chances que el argentino le dio.

González tuvo que lidiar durante todo el encuentro con el poderosísimo saque del gigante de 2,08 metros, que metió 15 aces. En tanto, el tenista de Tandil convirtió un saque directo y cometió cinco doble faltas.

Mañana, Guillermo Cañas buscará defender las semifinales logradas el año pasado cuando enfrente al ganador del match entre Gimeno Traver e Igor Andreev. Mientras que Máximo González buscará lo propio frente al local Roko Karanusic, que accedió a los cuartos por la no presentación de Ivan Ljubicic.

El joven de 20 años no pudo repetir lo hecho ante Gremelmayr el pasado martes y se quedó afuera del ATP de Kitzbuhel al caer con el ídolo local Jurgen Melzer, quien fuera número 28 del ranking mundial por mediados del 2007, en una hora de juego.

A pesar de la derrocha, el correntino hizo un gran encuentro, teniendo en cuenta la instancia y el rival que tenía por delante. Leonardo Mayer cometió cuatro doble faltas, disputó el 46 por ciento de los puntos con su primer saque, efectuó dos aces y ganó tan sólo 12 puntos con la devolución. En tanto, el austriaco le ganó 17 puntos al servicio del argentino, lo que le permitió quebrar en tres de las cuatro oportunidades que generó.

Anteriormente, "Chucho" había accedido a dicha instancia en Buenos Aires, Acapulco y Viña Del Mar. En esta oportunidad, el argentino que se ubica en la posición número 54 del ranking mundial entró directamente a la segunda ronda por estar entre los primeros cuatro preclasificados.

Acasuso, segundo favorito, necesitó de una hora y 26 minutos para deshacerse del galo y meterse en los cuartos de final del torneo holandés.

Cada set, "Chucho" se lo adjudicó con un break de ventaja, tomando el servicio de Vasselin dos veces en el primero contra uno de este y en una oportunidad en el segundo parcial. A pesar de esto, el misionero obtuvo un bajo porcentaje de oportunidades de break concretadas ya que sólo tomó 3 de las 11 que generó.

El oriundo de Posadas concretó cinco aces, no cometió doble faltas y solamente perdió 17 puntos con su servicio en todo el encuentro.

"Chucho" buscará su tercera semifinal del año cuando mañana enfrente al español Albert Montanés, verdugo del uruguayo Pablo Cuevas.

Although Federer has lost to several players this year, as opposed to the previous 4 years, he still is the best in the world on the 52-week basis. If it wasn't for Djokovic, he would probably have beaten Tsonga in the final and won Aussie Open, even with the mono. The Fish and Roddick losses are a little more awkward, but the man had almost NO points to defend that month. For Roddick, it was very important that Federer was not in his best place this spring. Then came clay, and the points started to accumulate. Won Estoril, Nadal prevented him from MC title once again. Stepanek prevented him from winning in Rome. (Which I think he would have). Then Nadal x 2 in Hamburg and RG. Only to be followed by a record LOW 11-1 on grass. Are we really worried that Federer has lost it?! No way! He is still the best player out there, until proven otherwise. If he starts a phenomenal fall and gets his gold medal, there's no way he will end the year as anything else but numero uno.

Nadal must be frustrated, even after Wimbledon. Although he has less points (much less) to defend the next couple of months, he is probably very aware that Federer might reach the finals of many tournaments to come. Probability that Nadal will do the same on his poorest surface is not as probable. So wait a few moore weeks before we change the positions on the rankings. Another thing is that not only will Nadal want the gold medal, but he will want to try to win the Davis Cup title, I assume. Spain is in a good position to win it all and he could go and focus on DC this fall, rather than risking playing too many tournaments. He was close to giving up his 2nd spot to the Djoker.

Djokovic on the other hand has a LOT of points to defend. First he has the Canada title and the USO final. Add a Vienna 250 pointer and he knows he cannot mess it up. Will he give it 100% for the medals? I don't know, I thought he would do like Roddick. Skip Beijing and try to focus on USO. I assume that it's not a bad move if you wanna win it. I hope the Beijing air doesn't mess the already asthmatic-like character of Djokovic. If I was him, I would have stuck around in North America.

So who are the other jokers who want in on the action? The reason Ferrer is 4th, is primarily due to his very good form this time last year. USO SF is not easy to defend, and Cicy QF is probably hard too. He also has Tokyo(250) to defend later on. I can only assume that he too, will want to have SOME focus on the home tie against the US in September. Later on he will have a final in MC as well. Pressure is on Ferrer. I predict he will fall some more under 3000 points and fight with Davydenko and Roddick for the 4th spot.

Dayvdenko is the next joker. He skipped two straight tournaments, which is unusual for him. His either sick or hurt. I don't think rest is on his program. I don't see him repeating Miami, but there's no telling where he could go, after such a good start to the 08 season.  But like Ferrer, he will have SF at USO, SF in Cincy and QF in Canada to defend. Pressure on him too. He will also lose some of these I think.

Roddick is a question mark. He seems to continue his problems with the back, or shoulder or whatever. If he's 100% fit for the Canada, he will always be ahead of Ferrer and Dayvdenko in terms of favorite for SF, but not further. Same goes in Cincy. Cincy might be his this year, as most player might opt to skip it for Olympics prep. Or maybe Blake will take it, after having been close last year.

Blake is another dude to look out for. One of the best hard court players, without a doubt, is probably drooling before heading to Toronto. This week he's in action in Indy and is favorite for the title. I think that he will pass Roddick and take the 6th spot, and hence (I assume) 6th seed for the Cincy Masters? Might turn out important, who knows?

Other players to look out for is certainly Nalby. He has two masters to defend. If he doesn't, he will be heading back to 20-25. Very likely I believe. Murray, Gasquet and Stepanek seem to be heading in a good form. Gasquet acted well on grass, and the other two have played OK all season. All are potential upsetters.

Wawrinka is a question mark. He seems very good on clay, but I've never seen him play phenomenal on hard. Gonzo, Youzhny, Karlovic, Ancic, Verdasco++++ many Americans like Isner and Querrey are all likely to make decent results.

Based on points and how players usually perform, I think the ranking will be almost unchanged in the top 10. Maybe Gasquet could do some damage. Roddick should also improve from a poor 2000 points.
