5 Ways to Celebrate going back to School

It’s not easy going back to school after a fun-filled summer. I remember from when I was a kid, but more, I see it every morning during these last few weeks as I try and drag my kids out of bed, into clothes, and to the bus. Here are a few ideas of how to make this transition time less miserable…maybe even fun!

Remind your kids that they still have the weekends. Have them look forward to Saturdays and Sundays by having them help you plan little day trips. (Last week we went to Six Flags Over Georgia!
On a particularly difficult morning, set out an ice cream sundae buffet on the kitchen table. Make it healthy with frozen yogurt, fruit toppings, and granola! (We did this on the first day of school, but it’s also great if a birthday fall out midweek.)
“Forget” to pack your kids lunch and then swing by school later with fresh slices of pizza.
The day doesn’t have to end at 2:30 when school is out—bring you kids (and even a few friends) to the mall for a few hours and let them roam around like they did in the summer. (Cumberland Mall and Lenox Square Mall (both in Atlanta) are great for roaming.)
Help your kid’s class organize field trips, like to the local zoo or aquarium. Volunteer to chaperone if that will help the cause. (I’ve already volunteered for Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia Aquarium—must start saving up my lunch hours…no one said back to school was easy for mom!)

And for mom—take advantage of the fact that your kids are going to bed a little earlier and take a bubble bath or catch up on your reading. Or, go to sleep early yourself!

Random Stuff We did in July - Contra Dance

I've let the blog get really behind, so here's a bunch of random stuff we did in July that I never got around to blogging.

We occasionally make it out to the Friday night contra dance hosted by the Chattahoochee Country Dancers here in Atlanta. This was very early in the evening. The gym fills up later. For more info on contra dancing and the local dances, go to www.contradance.org/html/details.php

Contra dancers are very nice folks - usually a bit on the nerdy side, but very kind and community-minded. The dances are called like a square dance, but are performed in lines. For each dance you have a partner --usually opposite gender, but not always. Either way, each couple consists of a gent and a lady.

For each dance, you almost always start with your partner, then change to your opposite gender neighbor, then the lines move opposite each other, and you dance with your partner again, then with your new neighbor, and so on, until you've danced with everyone in your line.

There's a live band (fiddle, guitar, banjo, that sort of thing). It's fun and it's not only good physical exercise, but learning the dances is good mental exercise, too! It's considered polite to look everyone you dance with in the eye (which also keeps you from getting dizzy while doing the only kind of "swinging" that goes on at these dances. Yes, I know - it's all very wholesome and oh-so-American.

We don't do it here in Atlanta, but at a lot of dances around the country they have potlucks before the dance.

* O conflito entre a Rússia e a Geórgia pela Ossétia do Sul começou na última quinta-feira (07/08), quando tropas da Geórgia entraram na Ossétia do Sul para recuperar o controle da região. O ataque da Geórgia foi mal recebido pela Rússia, que possui fortes laços e interesse na Ossétia do Sul.

* Os Russos dizem proteger os seus cidadãos na Ossétia do Sul, e invadiram a Geórgia, bombardeando e dominando várias cidades do país. Desde então, a Rússia vem rejeitando repetidas propostas

da Geórgia pela paz e vem sendo criticada pela comunidade internacional. Os EUA chamaram a resposta da Rússia ao ataque de “desproporcional”.

* A região montanhosa da Ossétia do Sul, que possui cerca de 70,000 habitantes, fica na Geórgia, enquanto que a Ossétia do Norte fica no território da Rússia. A composição da Ossétia do Sul é primariamente de Ossétios, e os cidadãos da Geórgia dentro da Ossétia são menos que um terço.

* Mesmo estando no território da Geórgia, os Ossétios não se consideram cidadãos da Geórgia (capital, Tbilisi) e isso resultou na separação da Ossétia do Sul em uma guerra com a Geórgia entre 1991 e 1992, na qual centenas de pessoas morreram e que deu a autonomia para a região, cuja capital é Tskhinvali.

* O desejo dos Ossétios, entretanto, não é somente de autonomia. Eles desejam independência da Geórgia e querem fazer parte da Rússia, enquanto que aquele um terço de cidadãos da Geórgia dentro da Ossétia querem que a Ossétia do Sul siga sob o domínio da Geórgia.
