ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — As the presidential race revs up, political conversations in NFL locker rooms echo those in workplaces nationwide. Taxes. Economy. McCain. Obama. War. Terrorism. White. Black. And a dilemma for these high-paid athletes: principles or pocketbook? "We're right in the middle," said Washington Redskins veteran Philip Daniels. "We've all got family members that are not doing so well. Democrats would help them out, but Republicans would help us out."

The 35-year-old defensive end sat in front of his locker not far from the nation's capital and analytically explained how his political color has changed from blue to red and back to blue again. Everything about Daniels' upbringing screams Democrat. He's a black male who grew up in modest surroundings in a small Georgia town. He majored in social work in college.

Everything about his income screams Republican. He's made millions many times over in his 13 years as a professional athlete, and the thought of paying higher taxes under a Democratic administration led him to vote for President Bush in 2000 and support the president's re-election in 2004.

"I used to be a Republican," Daniels said. "I wanted Bush in there. The previous years I've been Republican because of what we make, but this year's a little bit different. I think this year more guys are not even thinking about the income part of it. They're just really thinking about the economy and the country. A lot of people want change."

If the contest between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama has energized the U.S. public as never before, locker rooms across the country are reflecting the trend. Players whose jobs are based on wins and losses identify with the wild swings of the who's-leading-and-by-how-much grind of the campaign.

The clear preferences from some athletes stand in contrast to former NBA superstar Michael Jordan's unwillingness to take a stand in the 1990 North Carolina Senate race between Republican Jesse Helms and Democrat Harvey Gantt, who was bidding to become the first black southern senator since Reconstruction.

"Republicans buy sneakers, too," Jordan famously said, though he later endorsed Bill Bradley's presidential campaign in 2000.

"We spend an hour a day talking about this exact subject — in meetings, on the plane, in the locker room," New Orleans Saints linebacker Scott Fujita said. "I think it's just because there's a new interest in politics this campaign season, more than there's ever been as long as I've been following it."

The historic nature of the contest, which includes the first black man to win a major party nomination and a female vice presidential candidate, makes the topic more compelling.

"As a black male, am I excited about Obama being a candidate?" Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday said. "Where I can tell my son, who is 3 years old, 'Believe it, you can be president one day'? Yes."

Holliday emphasized, however, that he is voting Democratic because he wants "fresh energy and a change." In interviews, players overwhelmingly said their votes in November would not — and should not — be based on race alone.

"That's the thing that a lot of African-Americans fall into: 'Just because he's black, I'm going to vote for him,'" said Redskins defensive end Demetric Evans, an undecided voter who is black. "You need to know why you vote for him. You need to know what he stands for."

The discussions and mini-debates, however, always seem to come back to money. Days after Daniels expressed his feelings inside the Redskins locker room, teammate Ethan Albright held up a stamped envelope containing his absentee ballot, ready to be mailed to his home state of North Carolina. As he put the envelope in his locker, cornerback Shawn Springs called out: "Why you like McCain?"

"I like him," Albright replied with a nod, "because he ain't raising taxes."

That's a sentiment reiterated by New York Giants punter Jeff Feagles, also a McCain supporter.

"He is going to tax the wealthy, which is what we are," said Feagles, referring to Obama. "We are in that category. You look at those kinds of implications, and I hate using that word, it will affect us."

Feagles' teammate, defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka, couldn't disagree more.

"It's insulting to think you would vote based on how it affects you financially," Kiwanuka said. "I had that conversation even before I got my signing bonus. It's a matter of general policy and what you believe in and what that person stands for. ... When you look at it, I spent the majority of my life with an average upbringing to say the least, and that has shaped how I vote a lot more than the last couple of years living this lifestyle."

Torn between the two arguments is Redskins cornerback Fred Smoot. He was one of the few Washington players to publicly support Sen. John Kerry four years ago, but this time he has yet to make up his mind.

"We're coming from Democratic backgrounds, but we got Republican money right now," Smoot said. "That's kind of hard, because you see it from both sides."

The spike in interest isn't limited to the NFL. NBA superstar LeBron James attended an Obama rally last weekend in Cleveland, while Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling appeared with McCain at a NASCAR race in New Hampshire last month.

NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs addressed this year's Republican National Convention, and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has dished out unsolicited advice to both candidates on his popular blog.

Politics can be a touchy subject for athletes. Some find the topic too polarizing to discuss for public consumption. Others have never voted and simply have no interest.

"I was one of those people who was registered, tried to do the absentee ballot thing in '04, and didn't get it done," Redskins cornerback Leigh Torrence said. "This year I'll make sure that's not the case."

Torrence is making up for lost ground in other ways. He and teammate Lorenzo Alexander attended a voter registration drive last month in Richmond, Va., and he's been trying to get as many of his teammates registered as possible. Fujita has made a similar push with the Saints, encouraging teammates to register to vote in Louisiana.

Not everyone feels politics belongs in the locker room. On Wednesday, before Cleveland Browns quarterback Brady Quinn introduced McCain at a rally in Strongsville, Ohio, Browns coach Romeo Crennel told his players in a team-wide address that he didn't want to hear political debates on the job.

"Their politics are their politics as long as they don't interfere with the team," Crennel said. "That's my main concern, that they don't get on a soapbox here in the locker room and get it going back and forth about a particular candidate against another candidate. That's why the ballot is a secret ballot when you go vote.

"(Quinn) took the time to do that, but as long as he keeps it outside the building and outside the team, that's his choice."

Four years ago, it was not uncommon to find Bush-leaning athletes unwilling to speak openly about their preference because they didn't want to be perceived as voting against their ideals just to get a better tax rate. Some who went public for Kerry were chided by teammates because Kerry, like Obama this year, proposed raising taxes on the wealthy.

This year, the dynamic appears to have shifted. Several players said the locker room banter suggests many of their teammates are mirroring Daniels' example and switching from Republican to Democrat. If the Redskins were a state, there was little question that Bush would have won its electoral votes in 2004. Asked what would happen this year, Smoot said: "It's a blue state."

"There might be some years where honestly you're like, 'Hey, what might be best for me fiscally,' and you may feel like a Republican slant may be a little more appropriate," New York Giants defensive tackle Barry Cofield said. "But I think after Bush's reign of terror, you know, and what we are seeing out of Sarah Palin, I think regardless of your financial station, I think it is pretty easy to support Obama."

That's not to say McCain doesn't have a solid core of supporters. After putting his absentee ballot in the locker, Albright emphasized that his preference for the Republican had as much to do with experience as taxes.

"McCain's been in office his whole life," Albright said. "I like somebody who's experienced. He's not going to make a quick, rash decision. If I'm having heart surgery, I want somebody who's done it before."

Kansas City Chiefs center Rudy Niswanger called himself "a McCain man, for all the obvious reasons."

"I appreciate the sacrifice and courage he's shown," Niswanger said, "and I think experience is very important in that job."

The dilemma gives some a reason to opt out of the process entirely.

"I don't think I'm going to vote," said Washington running back Clinton Portis, the Redskins star known for his colorful opinions. "Because I make Republican income, but I need the Democrats in office, so which way do I go?"

That's one electoral decision that doesn't sit well with Torrence, who has worked so hard to get his teammates involved in the process.

"Regardless of what your beliefs are," Torrence said, "I think it's your responsibility to vote.

This past weekend, my family and I went to my nephew's 2nd birthday party.  An old friend of my SIL's also attended the party.  She has been training for triathlons some time and I was excited to pick her brain about our shared interest in the sport.

 

I proudly told her about my latest endeavors and she snidely remarks, "Those aren't real triathlons.  If you aren't swimming 2 miles and feel like you are going to die, then you've not done a real tri."

 

Talk about crushing someone's spirit!  That's like telling someone who runs 5K, "You're not a real runner unless you run a marathon."

 

Even in my shock, I scripted a pretty decent rebuttal.  "I believe a triathlon is defined by completing 3 physical activities: swim, bike and run.  If we went around the room and polled everyone, I think you would find everyone's response to include those three things.  And, yes, technically it is only a sprint, but it feels like a REAL triathlon to me.  And despite what you may think, I do feel like I am going to die during and after, but I love it!  It's not about the distance for me, but the challenge and trying to compete against my own time."

 

With a stunned expression, she replied "Well, I compete against myself as well, but I don't event like triathlons."

 

"Then, why do you even do them?"

 

"I do them because my friends convinced me to do it, but I don't like them."

 

"So, you caved to peer pressure?  Interesting."

 

The longer I spoke with her, the more my blood began to boil.  I realize I am no Hollie Kenney, but I do best and I am damn proud of what I do!  The other athletes I have met at the various races have been so supportive and encouraging.  My friends and family applaud my achievements and in turn, I celebrate their hard-work too.  Where did this chick come off?

 

To avoid an ugly scene turning even uglier, I took a few deep cleansing breaths and escaped to the patio to discuss politics with my BIL.  Discussing Obama over a beer would make me feel better.

Located in our skull, at the top of our body, this relatively small structure is our own central processing unit (CPU).  Much more intricate and infinitely more powerful than any computer, our brain works silently 24 hours-a-day, 365/366 days-a-year, from before we are born until we die, controlling organ function, thought, emotions, movement, hormone levels ... the list goes on.

To help put its complexity into context, there are estimated to be more connections/junctions in our brain than there are stars in the universe; that is more than 100 billion!

But even with our extensive knowledge and intense research efforts, many areas of the brain remain a mystery.  From what we do know and without getting into too much detail, our brain is divided into different anatomical areas with different structures and functions.  A significant part is dedicated to the processing of information fed in by nerves connected to our senses (e.g., touch, sight, smell & hearing), through the detection of changes in levels of hormones and other 'body chemicals'.  Interaction of the different areas provides our thoughts, deductions, analyses, feeling and emotions.

And different areas provide specific types of thoughts and responses: emotional; rational; sexual.

It follows that what we feed into our brain influences what we get out.  Benefits of a healthy diet, exercise regimens and work/rest balance have all been demonstrated to one degree or another.  The way in which we 'train' our brain influences how much information we retain, how we process the information we receive and how we arrive at the conclusions we draw.  Our life experiences also greatly influence how we process information.  All of these factors add up to a very complex series of interactions and influences.

One thing we know is that the brain responds well and adapts, even changes when we repeat actions (we call this practice).  New skills are learnt, information retained and brain processes modified.  Think of learning a new skill ... very rarely do we start off an expert.  Athletes train their bodies and brains for the physical and mental battles on the track and field.  Musicians train their fingers, hands, feet and minds as they master tunes and rhythms, read music and improve dexterity.  Actors learn their parts through the repetition of words and actions.

And in our school and colleges, we repeatedly stimulate our logical, deductive faculties through repetition and the exercising of our 'left brain'.

But if we wish to be creative it is important that we understand the need to exercise our whole brain.  The right side is important in engaging our emotions, non-logical or deductive thinking and artistic skills.  When we hook this up with our logical thinking, we arrive at creativity.

Creativity is not a gift of the few it is a talent we ALL possess.  Neither is creativity something that just happens.  Just like any other skill, we need to work at it, exercising the different faculties of our mind and intelligence, honing the skills that make creativity part of our life.

Whatever area of life we find ourselves in, creativity has a place and application.  In one of my earlier articles, 5 Simple Steps to Creative Thinking and Idea Generation, I listed some time-proven steps which help us to train our brains to think creatively and come up with new ideas.  These steps were identified by a master of the advertising industry from the 1940's, but they are equally applicable today across a broad range of disciplines.

Our brain IS an amazing organ and the potential IS almost infinite.  How we tap into that potential often lies with the way in which engage our faculties, however good or bad we think they are.  When we engage these effectively, we are repeatedly amazed by our own creative potential.

So let's learn how to use our whole brain, our whole intelligence, rather than just our intellect, and benefit ourselves and others from the creativity that emerges.

I'm not quite sure what sort of stance Team Impact has on homosexuality and the LGBT community, but I'm just hoping that it's as positive as the Christian message they would send to others.  However, with the "Family Focused Evangelism" motto, I highly doubt they support gay marriages.  Hopefully, I'm just a crusty old queermudgeon who's out of touch with our present society's opinion on homosexuals...

Anyway, whatever their stance might be, I can't deny that these big and beefy Christian behemoths are definitely heavenly and sinfully hot.

These girls (ages 8 to 12) have totally rocked my world.

He's had a life of hardship and adversity (Cancer! Poverty! WWF!), but the Man (don't call him "boy" he'll beat the shit out of you for your lack of respect) has always bounced back. Not only bounced back, but kept his sense of humour, integrity, and love for his Mother! That's right he's a self-admitted Mama's er...Man, whachu gonna do ‘bout it?

In reality, Mr. T is a helper and a motivator. He tries to let kids know that they don't have to live ghetto big, and die that way too. He gives, uh, motivational talks (This is Mr. T, does he ever just talk?) about self-respect, and helping others, and not giving up on your dreams. Here are some most wonderful quotes from the Man himself to illustrate his awesomeness:

  • Anger - use it, but don't lose it! --Be Somebody or Be Somebody's Fool!
  • I didn't just start doing this today. Not like some people that have a movie coming out, so they go visit kids in the hospital. You don't need that phony crap. All of these celebrities, they turn my stomach with their funny stuff. I've been going in the ghettos without the press, without bodyguards, talking to kids. "Get to reading, stay in school. You don't have to carry a gun." I know about peer pressure and all that, but I say, "Hey, they called me a sissy because I wouldn't join a gang. Who was calling me a sissy? Does it make me a sissy because somebody called me a sissy?" [...] I'm going to fight if you touch me or hurt me or do harm to my family. But if you call me a bad name, or whatnot, I'm too smart for that. That's the message the kids need to hear coming from me.   • I remember one time I tried to pity this fool. He told me his name was Jeff. He was married. He pulled out his wallet and showed me three pictures of his kids; Kelly, Robert, Brittany. Real cute kids. Don't get too close man. It's hard to pity a fool if you get too close.
  • People ask what gives me the authority to give advice? I say, First of all, I don't give advice. Dr Phil gives advice. Mr. T helps people. I motivate them, I inspire them, I give them hope, and I plant the seed so they can feel good about themselves.
  • I pity the fool who did your mother!
  • The jibba jabba stops here!

So there you have it. Truly a Hero worth of the "I go by ms." Hall of Fame! If I was a kid and Mr. T came into my neighbourhood and told me to say NO to drugs, and read a book, I'd freaking do it stat. The Man's scary when your only 3' tall! But at least he has your best interests at heart...

Found this pretty good review of DailyMile.com and social networdking site for endurance athletes.  I myself am a user of the site and enjoy it, but the review is very honest and points out some things the site is lacking.  However we must remember the site is in Beta form so hopefully these thing will be taken care of.  Anyway here is a link to the review.

HA NOI — Nguyen Vu Quan secured one point from his tied game yesterday against Chinese Taipei’s Chiang Chung Hao at the first World Mind Sports Games’ men’s rapid xiangqi (Chinese chess) event in Beijing.


Quan raised his total points to 11 after eight rounds of the tournament, placing him in the top four.


Quan’s teammate, Nguyen Thanh Bao later defeated France’s Dang Nicolas to rank just under Quan with 10 points.


There is only one more round, so Vietnamese representatives will at least finish in the top three, if they play well today.


The defending Asian champion Ngo Lan Huong was victorious in the first round yesterday with a win over Genden Oyunchimeg from Mongolia. Huong shared the leading place with her teammate Cao Phuong Thanh who also enjoyed the sweet taste of winning after beating Larysa Malymon from the Ukraine.


Vietnamese duo chess masters Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son tied in their sixth round match at the men’s individual rapid chess event.


International Grand Master Son levelled with Mikhail Gurevich of Turkey, while Liem tied with Blogh Csaba of Hungary. Both of them pocketed 3.5 points after six rounds and ranked in the tournament’s top ten.


In the women’s side, master Hoang Thi Bao Tram trounced Joanna Dworakowska of Poland.


Her teammate Pham Le Thao Nguyen, however, lost to Baira Kovanova from Russia. Nguyen, therefore dropped down to the bottom group of the tournament with only two points.


The Vietnamese chess masters will have to think hard in the next three rounds, if they want to enter the semi-finals and catch up to foreign rivals.


The women’s blitz chess event concluded on Sunday. Russia’s ace chess player Alexandra Kosteniuk clinched the gold medal after coming from behind to beat former world champion Stefanova Antoaneta of Bulgaria 2-1.


The 24-year-old Russian, who won a world championship in September, overcame the first-game slump in the final and regained momentum in the following two games to seal a thrilling victory. Her win was the first gold medal of the 15-day Games. —

With cheering and fascination many lined the streets in Reggae colours to show much appreciation to Shelly-ann, Assafa, Usain, Michael, Veronics, Melaine, Shericka and 50 other Olympians.

Friday was the mini ceremony at the airport where the athletes were welcome; they took part in the “prize giving” ceremony. The mayor of Kingston presented the keys to the city which welcome the sprawling motorcade from the airport in to the city which lead to the National Stadium car park. The renowned Strawberry Hills host a star studded fund raising dinner: : “nyamin wid di stars outta door unda de star”.

After the mini ceremony at the airport just a day earlier it was good to see the National Ceremony and Sports award. Governor General pin who fi get pin and sash who fi get sash, when it was all done every one look well decorated and official. The evening show on the stadium grounds were okay I guess, the dancing the fireworks. Also performances by Tarus Riley, Beanie man and others. It was so grand and spectacular it is reported Beijing organizers are fuming with jealousy.

I am not going to talk about the Michael Jacksoness stage appearance by lighting Bolt on stage at the stadium because I think it was silly. The dancing was ok though. I like the street dance atmosphere they had going. I think it was cool when Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell did a little dance off on the mini stage. Before they took pictures with fans pretending to be passing a baton. Again Bolt was the winner no doubt although I think Powell could be a better dancer if he really tried-that’s just my opinion.

I haven’t heard much about the party at the Quad on Sunday.

Yesterday the celebrations were taken to the west where once again Olympians were given the Keys to the city. I hope someone give them a key ring to hold all those keys. In Montego Bay there was the usual motorcade which travel to Trelawny home parish of Bolt. Some Olympians visited schools.

Micheal Frater and Shelly-Ann Frazer visited Wolmers Boys and Girls yesterday to catch up on happenings at their former schools. They were well received. Other schools visited included Charlemont , Ferncourt and Vere Technical in Clarendon which by the way is a little sprint factory in local athletics.

All sorts of plans were unveiled this week as it relates to sports in this here hyper flag waving nationalism. The Herb McKenley stadium is to be completed this year in Clarendon. The PM announce big plans to boost Jamaica’s sports infrastructure and corporate Jamaica is planning more bandwagonist behavior for local sports.

Bruce Golding was just at the United Nations (UN) earlier last week where met with President George Bush in New York. Mr. Bush reportedly was eager to discuss Jamaica’s “powerful performance” at the Olympics. A release from the State Department later claimed that they suspected Jamaica was enriching cornmeal porridge to make nuclear sprinters that could reach London by 2012. The UN has scheduled a meeting in the Security Council to vote on whether to impose sanctions on Jamaica for refusal to open up its yam fields for inspection.

In all our celebration I can not help but mention a few complaints and gossips I heard swirling around the place. It didn’t sit well in some quarters to have our esteemed ambassadors seated on plastic chairs at the ceremony held at the airport on Friday. The dinner planned at the high-end Strawberry Hill fell short and left a bad taste for diners after the $1,500 a plate fund raising dinner was almost ruined after a “Kitchen malfunction”.
