Even portable technologies that are not marketed as AT solutions are helping students with disabilities succeed in mainstream classrooms.

One such student is Joe Griffin, a fifth-grader at Maude Sanders Elementary School in Walton County, Fla., who uses Promethean's Activslate--a wireless, tablet-style device that is small enough to sit on a desk or to move around the classroom. The Activslate can be used in conjunction with Promethean's interactive whiteboard, the Activboard. Though Griffin cannot use his hands and is wheelchair-bound, with the slate's Activpen stylus mechanically attached to his hat, he can write and participate at his desk with the rest of the class.

"Usually I have to have an aide to help me write things, but with this [slate] I can do it all by myself," beamed Griffin during a recent news broadcast.

Why assistive tech can be fun...

The up-on-two wheels move that many athletes in chairs make look effortless.

A 360 in the name of efficiency.

And the incredibly quick way one ex boyfriend (a decent guy, not TheMostEvilDisabledManAlive), was able to transfer himself to the driver's seat of the hand controlled Skylark, and then in a one handed pickup, fold the manual chair, raise it high enough to be level with the floor of the car, and use the second hand to set it securely in the back seat behind him in less than one minute.

And he was the one who liked to go dancing...

Some of us are damn quick....

And some of us (sigh) just used to be :)

Landmark College states, "With the reauthorization in 1997 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), assistive technology (AT) is no longer viewed by educators exclusively within a rehabilitative or remediative context, but as a tool for accessing curriculum."

Non-verbal students would not be able to express or participate in the curriculum without a voice. Assitive Technology is their voice. Working with alot of non-verbal students the task of teaching would be more than frustrating without the dynamos, step by steps, and other assistive devices. These devices give them a voice, a choice, and the ability to participate along side with other students.

Ellen is a wonderful example of what an assistive device can make in a child's life.
