Ask Fiona - 13 facts about Buns

Mother bunny grows her fur thicker when she is growing babies and pulls the fur to make a cozy safe place to birth and nurse them.

Newborn bunnies are called kits & can fit into a human hand.

Babies have no smell or odor — This helps hide and protect them.

Bunny’s nose knows every scent, every breeze. A bunny can only breathe through it's nose.

Bunny’s hind legs thump to warn of danger.

Bunny’s tail is called a scut - It flashes messages of danger, excitement and even directions to other bunnies.

Bunny’s ears—no matter what shape— hear all, sense all and cool bunny when it’s hot!

Rabbits shed their fur frequently, and regrow it soft and clean.

Bunnies can even change color with the seasons to make them harder to see.

Bunnies can live to be 10-13 years old.

Bunnies can be litter box trained.

Bunnies love to play with toys, especially toys they can toss or play catch.

Bunnies are masters at Disapproval.

2 t. brown mustard seeds
1 t. grated fresh ginger
1 leek, sliced
Sea salt
1 t. ground cumin
½ red chili, seeded and finely chopped (add more or less to your taste)
2 large ripe tomatoes, cut into chunks

Dear Fi,
My sister is attacking our tree skirt saying it is an alien and must die – are tree skirts really aliens?
BunBoy in need of clarification

Dear Bun,
Tree skirts are an alien life form that invade the house every winter. They must be killed. Here I demonstrate the art of pouncing on the alien.

Once properly pounced, you must attempt to dig to China through the offending tree skirt

Ahhhhh, conquest is mine!

And I know that was you Orlando… BunBoy…

Oh - And visit here for the cutest snoozy lop photos ever!

Vegan Stroganoff (inspired by meatless meatballs stroganoff recipe in the Jan Vegetarian Times)

Olive Oil
1 medium onion
1 package sliced mushrooms
½ package Trader Joes Soy Meatballs
½ cup Dry Sherry (or if you do not have a dry sherry, white wine)
¼ Veggie Stock (or more as needed)
1 container of Vegan Sour Cream (I used Tofutti)
Cracked black pepper and salt
Eggless egg noodles

Sautée the onion in olive oil until soft (5-10 minutes). Add in sherry, mushrooms and meatballs – salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the sherry is absorbed. Turn to low. Add stock and sour cream. Cook until the sauce thickens & serve over noodles. I add cracked black pepper and thyme to the top of mine. Enjoy.

Since we have so many new friends - I thought it was time to go over some Bun terms with our new friends.

Bunny Vocabulary

Another name for a rabbit is Lagomorph, a plant eating mammal having fully furred feet and 2 pair of upper incisors (front teeth). Hares and pikas are also lagomorphs.

Newborn rabbits are called kittens. Grown male rabbits are bucks and grown females are does.

Newborn hares are called leverets. Grown hares are also called bucks and does.

Rabbits and other animals that sleep during the day and night and play at dawn and dusk are known as crepuscular. Those who sleep all day and are awake all night are called nocturnal.

Rabbits live in underground tunnels called warrens.

Kindle is what a rabbit does when it gives birth.

Rabbits and hares are herbivores (plant eaters). They eat grass, leaves, bark and twigs in the wild.

Bunnies are usually very quiet but can communicate in the following ways:

Chinning - Rubbing with their chin marks their territory and says ‘All mine!’

The Flop - Stretched out and relaxed means ‘Leave me alone, I’m relaxing here!’

Ears laid-back and hunkered down mean they are anxious or annoyed so ’Leave me be’

Pushing something away means ‘Not interested’ or ‘I’m all done’.

Nose Bumps - Little kisses and nose rubs means ‘I like you a lot!’ and ‘You’re my best friend’.

BINKIE - Big leaps and twists are made by really happy and silly bunnies.
