As part of the opening ceremony to the XXIX Olympiad Games in Beijing, China, a large globe floated into the air with acrobats performing around it each suspended by a wire harness. In its pageantry and fireworks, the ceremony marked China as a world power to contend with. They took all steps to show what was possible.

The preparation for this opening event, performers had rehearsed for many months sparking the degree of dedication to which their athletes have trained for the games. Chinese athletes may break all records unseen before as they attempt to show the world the threshold to their human spirit and endurance.

The British Olympic committee for the 2012 games are scratching their heads today as to wonder how they are going to match or surpass this presentation. Each artist received a room in the townhouse to use as a studio for three weeks to serve as their home for creation.

As the project manager, I have been involved with HomeBase since its first year in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, in 2006. Recently, I had a moment to talk with Anat Litwin, the project founder and director, about the ambitious third year of HomeBase.

Q: As someone who grew up in both Berkeley, California and Haifa, Israel, can you explain what is home to you, as a perennial traveler?

For people of our generation the geographical sense of home has changed, resulting in a prevailing sense of displacement having to do with open borders and globalization, whether chosen or not chosen. HomeBase has to do with the exploration of home as a concept that we carry with us, suggesting the possibility to recreate and reform the meaning of home through a creative process.

Q: How did you initially conceive of the HomeBase Project? What inspired you?

At the time I was working as Director of the Makor Artists-in-Residence program of the 92nd Street Y, and I realized the immense creative potential of an artistic community based on study, creativity, and dialog.

Parallel to that, I received a huge studio space, an entire floor in a brownstone building in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, which was kindly given to me by my landlord, Florin Meirovici, for two months, after which it was to be renovated.

I wanted to challenge the communal setting further, so I brought together a diverse group of artists and offered each artist a room as a studio within my studio to work together on the notion of home, within the context of site, environment, community, and public interaction.

Q: Why have you chosen home as the focus of this project?

Home has become a subject of exploration for me because it is such a foundational aspect of one's being. In a way home is an extension of self, of past and present; it is an architectural and emotional structure within which we exist.

As an artist and curator I am interested in exploring this theme as it elevates everyday questions of being in the world. Home is a rich entity that exists on the verge of the private and public, combining architecture, real estate, urban design, social, political, and spiritual issues. By exploring home there is a shift in roles: instead of the artist being caught merely in the matrix of gentrification and high rent fees, the artist claims space and becomes an architect of meaning, generating new perspectives and a rich cross-cultural dialog about this theme.

Additionally, in these times of a bursting art market, and the ever-increasing commercial value of art, there is a real need to create some kind of alternative venue that is focused on direct dialog between artists, and between artists and the public. It is about creating a meaningful laboratory for exploration and bringing art back home, and not necessarily as a commodity.

Q: What is home, if it is not just the place we live or the house we grew up in?

Home is a work in progress, it is transient. Often I find that it can be defined by its absence, by a sense of longing.

Home is different from house; home is much more abstract, while house is concrete. There can be a combination of the two, but they can also be completely separate. One can be homeless even in the biggest home...

This is not an attempt to beautify the notion of home. Home can contain the most difficult, horrific, and painful realities and the most mixed emotions. Within a home environment one goes through the deepest physiological developments and threats, gaining a sense of self and at the same time losing it. Freud wrote an interesting article about the "Uncanny," the un-homely, alluding to the disturbing psychological aspect of home. Home resonates in many different shades and tones; I think that's why its meaning is so simplified and why it is such an interesting ground for exploration.

Q: You are the founder of HomeBase, and also an artist. Can you tell us about Anat the artist?

My art work has a child-like and humorous aspect to it combined with provocation and sensuality. I have been working lately in the medium of paper cut-outs and installation, using images and home furniture to create a kind of unique iconography, an object theatre.

I think that in my work there is a strong dimension of questioning and doubting very primal cultural aspects, such as family, home, and relationships; using a naive, saccharine, and seductive facade to do so. Specifically, the new series for HomeBase is focused on a total investigation of relationships with the "other," the companion, the union, the quest for bonding and the dysfunction of bonds. On a larger level the whole HomeBase project, as an artwork, explores just that as well.

(5 day painting workshop)

This painting workshop is aimed at the serious amateur who wants to learn a comprehensive understanding of painting technique after just a few days whilst also having plenty of time to explore one of the most exciting cities in the world.
Time is divided equally between the studio and the city, allowing technique and method to be thoroughly ingrained, before venturing out into the most picturesque of Barcelona's 'painterly' locations.

"The course Daniel ran was excellent in achieving both a challanging and rewarding experience. Also, the practical skills we learnt produced some fantastic results after just a few days." Chris Charalambides, London.

The mythic Soviet Lomo camera, born in 1982, gained cult-status for its slightly indinstinct images with distorted colours.

The same year Holga was created in Hong Kong as a cheap camera containing only the bare necessities for photo mechanisms.

The Lomographic society adopted Holga a few years ago and even offered an "Holga Starter Kit".

But now they really tempt me as they further revamped Holga , proposing more equipments :

A color wheel to tint your flash with yellow, red, blue, or clear gels.
A "B" setting to keep the shutter open for natural background / flashed
foreground images, or pure nighttime long exposures. A tripod nut to
keep Holga steady, and a 6x6 plastic mask for sharper images.

The Deluxe Kit includes also the Holga Filter Set. They even added
my favourite application to take pictures of the people I don't like
too much: a titanium Japanese Fisheye Adaptor!

WE ARE THE (HOLGA) MODS

Given its simple and friendly nature, the Holga is uniquely suited for all manner of modifications and tinkering. Here's a few to get you started! If you have some of your own, then shoot them over to us at holga@lomography.com .

The Lenshood by Mandi

There really couldn't be an easy Holga Mod! All the hard has been done
and all you just have to download it!
The idea of this here Lens Hood is to save your masterpiece shots from
evil flare spots. It will do it's very best to protect your Holga from
extreme-angle light reflecting inside the lens from the front and side.
As long as you keep the light source out of the frame, you should be
able to shoot towards the light without getting unwanted sun flare.
And these are no ordinary, average-Joe lens hoods. Oh no no no! They
are a collaborative project using Mandi's Vorsprungdurchtechnik and
Michael's cutting-edge graphic design. With 4 funky designs to choose
from, you will be the envy of all fashionistas and camera-watchers the
world over.
Just click on this link to download your very own free, Designer Holga
lens hood. All you need then is a printer, a pair of scissors and a bit
of sticky tape.

Pinholga by Daniel

For anyone Lomographer who has wanted to build their own pinhole but
either doesn't have the time (or is frankly too lazy) to do it from
scratch, Daniel's Pinholga is an easy 3 step wonder.
The Holga's 'B' setting and adaptability makes it the perfect camera for a pinhole modification.

Gently, unscrew the lens (don't worry, you can screw it back on later!)

Tape the pinhole into the Holga.

All you need now is the Holga cable release adaptor, a cable release and a tripod. You're done!

The Paper Mask

Here’s a very simple modification. The idea is to create a mask which
sits inside your Holga and projects its rough edges onto the film. Take
some paper or cardboard (approx 8x7cm), fold it down to 6x6x7cm, rip or
cut out the center, and then tape the whole thing. You can use it
instead of the regular 6x6 plastic mask – but you’ll need to tape the
batteries inside. Shoot and enjoy the “I like it raw” edge style!

The Emperor’s New Clothes

Tired of the black plastic look of your beloved Holga? Looking for a
change? First, find some material you like and make sure you have
enough of it. Then, check the measurements of the parts you want to
cover. Mark your material and cut it out (if necessary). And then stick
it on your Holga! Feel free to pair your new beauty with a gold chain
or jewelry for a real sassy look. And for some extra tips:

- Don’t forget to cut out a flap for the film exposure window
- If you still own a lens cap, give it a new dress as well. But don’t forget to take it off when shooting!
- Be careful with the glue
- Choose extraordinary materials. Try clothes, fur, cotton wool, your
favorite photo, sand, tin foil, simple cardboard (you can write and
draw on it).

Signature by Mandi

This brand-new technique is still being perfected by our expert Holga
technicians. But the general idea is this: embed a small signature or
character onto each shot that you take. Of course, this is easily done
in Photoshop, but we are talking analog here! You should use the
interior edge of your Holga’s interior frame to mount your signature.
Try putting your initials in tin foil or gluing tiny letters to it.
Whatever you place there will appear on in every shot. Bear in mind
that the orientation will be reversed on the actual print.

Fignature by Mandi

Like its kissing cousin, the Signature mod – this involves pasting
small items onto your Holga’s film mask so that they will appear on
every of your images. For this purpose, we used little tiny figures –
the kind that are employed in H-O scale model railroad dioramas. Head
to your local hobby store and check out their assortment, you’ll need
the smallest figures that they have there. Buy a couple and some
plastic cement glue. Remove the film mask from your Holga and carefully
glue your figurines around the square edge. Be sure to do this away
from the camera – you don’t want no glue on that shutter! Once it’s
fully dried (give it 24 hours), then pop the frame back in and start
shooting.

Half-frame Holga by Buzzy Sullivan

The right tools for the job: Holga, film, film box or thin cardboard, scissors, and electric or gaffers tape.

- Step 1: Remove the plastic film mask from your Holga camera. Cut up a
film box or other piece of cardboard to the same length as the film
mask, and half the height (or less than half if you want unbalanced
frames).
- Step 2: Feel free to leave a jagged edge in your cardboard – it will
have a cool effect on the photos. Keep in mind that your edge will be
magnified in the picture – so the more perfect that you try to make it,
the less perfect it will probably look.
- Step 3: Use some gaffers or electric tape to fasten the cardboard to either the top or bottom half of your Holga frame.
- Step 4: Load your film as usual and go shoot. For composition, keep in mind that you are shooting half-frame.
- Step 5: After your last shot, go into a dark room, a car trunk, or
use a film-changing bag (about 10 bucks at most pro photo stores). By
hand, roll the film from the take-up spool onto the original spool.
This is easiest if you hold the spools together. Don’t forget which way
is up and which is down on your film roll.
- Step 6: Once your film is rolled back, then go into a lighted area
and flip the Holga mask upside down – so that the cardboard if covering
the opposite side.
- Step 7: Load the film like normal and shoot the roll again (keeping in mind your half-frame composition).
- Step 8: Develop as usual, smile, and repeat!!!

A new story by Vicente Gutierrez, wmmna’s correspondent in Tokyo.

A new story by Vicente Gutierrez, wmmna's correspondent in Tokyo.

"I wanted to distance myself from the curse of time." - Ryuichi Sakamoto
"I wanted the imagery to project completely free of control." - Shiro Takatani
[quotes taken from ICC website]

The recent collaboration between composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (a founder of Yellow Magic Orchestra) and cinematographer Shiro Takatani (a founder of the dumbtype art collective) is their effort to escape the constraints of space and time, namely notions of sequence.

For Sakamoto, it´s composing without sticking to traditional time signatures or a single genre in a composition. For Takatani, it is allowing a computer-controlled system to select clips from the diverse body of video he produced for this installation. For both, avoiding linear forms of their respective fields is what they had worked towards by looking to generative art as an escape.

LIFE: fluid, invisible,inaudible... started as an opera by Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1999 as his effort at presenting an overview of music and society in the 20th century; for that work, Takatani was brought in to help out with the visuals. From then, the two later collaborated with a short series of experimental live shows, the first being Garden Series Vol.1: Experimental Live at Honen-in Zen Temple in Kyoto where they used laptops to conduct the music and images. Fast forward to 2007 and 'LIFE' was commissioned as a work by the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) and later exhibited from March 10 to May 28 2007 at YCAM. Now, the newest, slightly evolved version of 'LIFE' is on display at the ICC center in Tokyo.

'Life:' is a journey into the world Sakamoto and Takatani have created from a body of audio and visual work, and as the name suggests, it aims to be fluid, invisible and inaudible. Juxtaposing abstract sounds and distorted visuals with clearer, more sensible sounds and images throughout, two duo virtuously present the unknown, invisible and inaudible as perceptible to us.

The sounds and visions in 'LIFE' are stored on the hard disk of a central computer which is being controlled by an algorithmic program so the images are randomly withdrawn from the cache to create an installation which is generative and constantly changing. Although it was largely generative, it seemed that throughout the audio-visual collage there were moments where Sakmoto and Takatani cleverly synchronized their music and film for more dramatic effect.

But first, here's how it works:

The decentralized flow of sound and video is established by a 3 x 3 grid of aquarium-like tanks made from acrylic, which are each 30 cm high and 1.2 sqm. The acrylic aquariums, each accompanied by two adjacently hanging speakers on the ends, are hung in the pitch-black darkness of a large installation room. Each of the 9 cubes contains a thin film of water, about a few centimeters deep and inside, within which varying levels of fog and [subsequent] ripples are generated by the ultrasonic waves from (8) silent pumps planted in the corners. A couple meters above are the discreet ceiling-based projectors which channel the images downward into the water, acting as a screen.

Upon entering the room to the tune of layers of blissfully jarring sounds by Sakamoto, the set up is confronting- a room consumed by darkness with the nine hanging cubes, suspended about 3 meters above the floor; all together creating a grid-like set up where laying down accommodates the best view of a single cube; those who felt free slowly paced within and around the perimeter.

Read the rest of the story.

Update 9/8/07
I have received several suggestions of other websites where artists can promote their work so I have decided to add the new resources to the list. If you have any other websites that you think should be on the list then send me a message using the contact box.

For The Artists: GET NOTICED NOW!!art-show.jpgart-show.jpg

In response to a large number of artists asking me how to market their art I have decided to write a basic guide for artists on how to get noticed online. The internet has opened up endless opportunities for artists to promote and market their work but with so many avenues of exposure it can be difficult knowing which to utilise and which to avoid. To keep things simple I have created a list of the most important avenues of self promotion for artists and links to relevant resources.

Networking:
One of the most important avenues of self promotion for artists is the involvement in, and interaction with communities of artists. By networking with other artists you get the benefit of their experiences, expertise and contacts within the art market which could lead to opportunities to exhibit your work, sell your work or be represented by a gallery of dealer. The internet has allowed global communities of artists to come together through online forums and groups to promote their work and enhance their marketing skills. There are many online communities of artists the best of which are:

Wet Canvas: http://www.wetcanvas.com
Deviant Art Forum: http://www.deviantart.com

Online Galleries:
Online galleries allow you to create your own online exhibition space and also offer your work for sale. Even if you don?t sell anything, having your work in an online gallery is great exposure. There are lots of online galleries many of which are not very good so below is a list of some of the better online galleries:

All excellent resources. Can I mention two more sites which, through active participation have made a real difference to the recognition of my work. Firstly, http://www.deviantart.com which is an online gallery/networking site, and secondly http://www.millionmasterpiece.com which is an arts charity - but still drives lots of people to my work.

The important thing with any of these sites is to be active and forward at making contacts, posting in forums and about news etc. Don?t wait for people to come to you!

Hi Nicholas,

I am an artist of differnt mediums. My main focus is cartoons. I have tried different websites, and approaches to be noticed, like the term ?dying artist.? Would you critique my work, and give me a suggestion on what road to take and how.
