For today, I elected to go with a theme of songs by either Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, or both. There were quite a lot of songs I could have put here, but I decided to do one from each, and one together.

Sorry if the overall theme of the music is a little depressing; that just happened.

And this is Paul Simon's "Slip Slidin' Away". A lovely song on it's own merits. Lots of powerful imagery.

Flowers Never Bend With the Rainfall - Simon & Garfunkel

And this is classic Simon & Garfunkel. Music where the lyrics are sheer poetry. Think about lyrics like this, for example:

"I'm blinded by the light
Of God and truth and right
And I wander in the night without direction."

Amazing. That is why I continue to like music by Simon and Garfunkel.

Op 14 oktober treedt de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Art Garfunkel opt in het Capitole in Gent. De New Yorker brengt met "An Evening with Art Garfunkel" nummers uit zijn twaalfde soloplaat "Some Enchanted Evening". Garfunkel verwierf vooral bekendheid met de hits die hij scoorde samen met Paul Simon. In 1970 besloten beide heren elk hun eigen weg te gaan. Garfunkel treedt op vanaf 20 uur. Tickets kosten tussen 45 en 59 euro.

1957 was a big year in music. Probably the most important event of the year was the birth of American Bandstand. On August 5th, American Bandstand began its 30-year run on TV. Dick Clark helped launched the careers of many starts and got America dancing.

In 1957, Jerry Lee Lewis and Patsy Cline started their musical careers. Here's Jerry performing Great Balls of Fire. And here's Patsy crooning her classic I Fall To Pieces.

Also, in 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met in Liverpool, and Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel started out as the duo Tom and Jerry with their first song Hey, Schoolgirl. And on March 19 of that year, Elvis Presley purchased a mansion in Memphis and called it Graceland, the place where fans would flock to for years after his death.

The musical partnership of David Crosby (born August 14, 1941), Stephen Stills (born January 3, 1945), and Graham Nash (born February 2, 1942), with and without Neil Young (born November 12, 1945), was not only one of the most successful touring and recording acts of the late '60s, '70s, and early '80s -- with the colorful, contrasting nature of the members' characters and their connection to the political and cultural upheavals of the time -- it was the only American-based band to approach the overall societal impact of the Beatles. The group was a second marriage for all the participants when it came together in 1968: Crosby had been a member of The Byrds, Nash was in the Hollies, and Stills had been part of Buffalo Springfield

The resulting trio, however, sounded like none of its predecessors and was characterized by a unique vocal blend and a musical approach that ranged from acoustic folk to melodic pop to hard rock. CSN's debut album, released in 1969, was perfectly in tune with the times, and the group was an instant hit. By the time of their first tour (which included the Woodstock festival), they had added Young, also a veteran of Buffalo Springfield, who maintained a solo career. The first CSNY album, Déjà Vu, was a chart-topping hit in 1970, but the group split acrimoniously after a summer tour. Four Way Street, a live double album issued after the breakup, was another number one hit. (When it was finally released on CD in 1992, it was lengthened with more live material.)

In 1974, CSNY reformed for a summer stadium tour without releasing a new record. Nevertheless, the compilation So Far became their third straight number one. Crosby, Stills & Nash re-formed without Young in 1977 for the album CSN, another giant hit. They followed with Daylight Again in 1982, but by then Crosby was in the throes of drug addiction and increasing legal problems. He was in jail in 1985-1986, but cleaned up and returned to action, with the result that CSNY reunited for only their second studio album, American Dream, in 1988. CSN followed with Live It Up in 1990, and though that album was a commercial disappointment, the trio remained a popular live act; it embarked on a 25th anniversary tour in the summer of 1994 and released a new album, After the Storm. What does Rolling Stone think about CSN?

First, last and always, there is the blend. The way the three voices fit together remains one of the most singular and pleasing harmonic fusions in all of rock. And that is why, when the solo careers of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash have been on the skids for years, they can reunite and create a whole that is much more than the sum of its parts.

No other California harmony group could claim such a spiritual mystique. The Mamas and The Papas California dreaming presupposed a voluptuary paradise of hot-blooded teenyboppers. The Beach Boys' playground of little deuce coupes and perfect waves, for all its glimpses into the great beyond, was sun-scorched and physically intense. And even The Eagles, CSN's most distinguished heirs, remained sullen sensualists brooding about the failure of pleasure to make them happy.

Those who enjoy just drifting along on sweet nothings will enjoy Daylight Again, CSN's dreamiest, most opaque album. Of its eleven songs – three by Nash, one by Crosby, six by Stills with various collaborators and one by Craig Doerge and Judy Henske–not a single one gives us a hard look at what any of them has been doing in the last five years. Nash's diaphanous "Wasted on the Way" is a wistful daydream about "so much water moving underneath the bridge." In "Delta," Crosby ruminates about "the running rivers of choice and chance." And Stills, in yet another voyage song, "Southern Cross," sings of "dreams a-dying."

Fittingly, Stills' title song, gorgeously rendered by the trio and Art Garfunkel, is both an epitaph and a longing for extinction, for "Armageddon's side" and "a valley covered with bones." In Daylight Again, the blend has turned into a ghostly choir sighing over lives that have all the urgency of an afterthought. (RS 376) STEPHEN HOLDEN

Classic Songs 5 - Bridge Over Troubled Water

"Bridge over Troubled Water" is the title song of Simon and Garfunkel's final album together, Bridge over Troubled Water, released January 1970. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on February 28, 1970,and stayed at the top of the chart for six weeks. It was replaced at the number-one spot by The Beatles' "Let It Be".

This song's recording process exposed many of the underlying tensions that eventually led to the breakup of the group after the album's completion. Most notably, Paul Simon has repeatedly expressed regret that he allowed Art Garfunkel to sing this song as a solo,as it focused attention on Garfunkel and relegated Simon to a backing position.

Adam has very fond memories of this song, including watching a routine on the BBC's Top of The Pops programmes performed by the lovely Pan's People. Who cared about the music when you could look at the dancers.

The album had other great songs on it including The Boxer, Cecilia - a great party song - and El Condor Pasa.

A great song which brings back very fond memories, including recalling when Adam first went flatting in the very early 1970s and found himself with 3 other chaps sharing a flat on the top floor of 5 storey house in St Georges Square, Pimlico for a rental of only Pds 25 a week. Great days.

On their first visit to New York, Adam and Mrs Smith arrived to find they had come the day after the famous Central Park reunion concert, not only that their hotel room overlooked the venue.

Both members of the duo went on to other things, but Adam suspects their glory days were as Simon & Garfunkel.

Though he is partial to some of the songs from the Graceland album.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930)
The Hollywood adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's classic novel is one of the earliest anti-war films, and still stands among the most haunting. As naive young German troops fight and die in World War I, their devotion to their homeland comes to seem cruelly meaningless.

LA GRANDE ILLUSION (1937)
French auteur Jean Renoir looks at WWI from the other side of the trenches and arrives at much the same conclusion. Three captured officers (Pierre Fresnay, Jean Gabin, Marcel Dalio) bond in a German POW camp and learn that nationalism and class divisions are less important than the things all humanity has in common. Such a damning statement that the Nazis seized its negatives when they invaded France three years later.

THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946)
Call it the Stop-Loss of its day: Midwestern war heroes (Dana Andrews, Harold Russell, Frederic March) struggle to ease back into their small-town lives after World War II. A rare look at the long-term challenges faced by ''the Greatest Generation'' once they defeated the Axis.

PATHS OF GLORY (1957)
Director Stanley Kubrick's first big box-office success was also his first foray into the anti-war territory he would return to again and again. Kirk Douglas stars as a compassionate French colonel defending troops who have been accused of cowardice by their brutal superiors during WWI.

DR. STRANGELOVE: OR, HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB (1964)
Kubrick's approach is considerably lighter in this mordant Cold War satire. As the U.S. and U.S.S.R. hurtle toward nuclear apocalypse for no particular reason, Peter Sellers pulls off a hat trick, playing the psychotic rocket scientist of the title, the ineffectual American president, and the lone sane military man. A masterpiece of weapons-grade gallows humor.

THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (1966)
Italian director Gillo Pontecorvo delivers a still-searing portrait of Algeria's mid-20th-century war of independence against its French colonial government. As both sides trade escalating acts of terrorism and brutality, the Western occupation is revealed as an exercise in gory futility.

CATCH-22 (1970)
Yossarian lives! Mike Nichols directs an all-star ensemble (Alan Arkin, Martin Sheen, Jon Voight, Orson Welles, Anthony Perkins, Bob Newhart...Art Garfunkel?!) in an adaptation of Joseph Heller's tragicomic WWII novel. The characters may have been Allied bombers stationed in the Mediterranean, but the theme of senseless violence amid a bureaucratic tangle could hardly have been more relevant to the ever-deepening Vietnam disaster.

M*A*S*H (1970)
Before Hawkeye and Trapper John were primetime-TV staples, they featured in Robert Altman's dark Korean War comedy. Donald Sutherland, Elliott Gould, and Tom Skerritt star as wisecracking Army doctors in a chaotic base camp south of the DMZ in the 1950s — another thinly veiled stand-in for the situation in Vietnam.

COMING HOME (1978)
Three years after the U.S. withdrew from Southeast Asia, American audiences finally got a great film that explicitly addressed Vietnam. Jane Fonda and Jon Voight both took home Oscars for their roles in a love triangle involving a paraplegic veteran and his nurse...

THE DEER HUNTER (1978)
...and that same year, the Academy voted this intense Vietnam movie Best Picture. Robert De Niro, and Christopher Walken star as Pennsylvania steelworkers turned soldiers; we watch the war's inhuman violence tear them apart as they proceed from a pre-war hunting trip through the battlefield and back home. You'll never forget those Russian roulette scenes.

APOCALYPSE NOW (1979)
In a loose re-telling of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) journeys up a Cambodian river to find and kill the unhinged Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando). It's since become one of the most iconic Vietnam War films — quotes don't get more quotable than Robert Duvall bellowing, ''I love the smell of napalm in the morning!''

DAS BOOT (1981)
Back to World War II: Director Wolfgang Petersen takes us inside a claustrophobic German submarine, revealing the grueling realities of undersea battle for a young crew whose members are beginning to question Nazi ideology.

PLATOON (1986)
The first and most affecting of Oliver Stone's Vietnam films. Charlie Sheen, standing in for Stone's own wartime experiences, drops out of college and ships off to the Army. Caught up in the violent rivalry between two superior officers — a brutal authoritarian played by Tom Berenger and a warmer sergeant played by Willem Dafoe — Sheen's ideals are shattered.

FULL METAL JACKET (1987)
Another insanity-of-war polemic from Kubrick, this one focusing on a troop of Vietnam-bound Marines. First we see Vincent D'Onofrio as a young recruit driven insane by the brutal dehumanization of basic training. The film's second segment follows the rest of the troops through a similarly hellish march into the city of Hue.

THREE KINGS (1999)
In director David O. Russell's quirky examination of the (first) Gulf War's aftermath, soldiers played by George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze happen upon a treasure trove of Saddam Hussein's gold bullion in 1991 — and then things really get started. As they traverse the desert, gradually coming to realize the war's effect on Iraq's civilians, wry humor gives way to touching drama.

MUNICH (2005)
Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated epic takes place more than 30 years ago, but it's still the only feature film that's truly done justice to the profound ethical complexity of today's ''War on Terror.'' Eric Bana, Daniel Craig, Ciarán Hinds, and others are undercover Israeli spies, assigned to secretly track and assassinate the Palestinian terrorists who planned the vicious murder of Jewish athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Their mission seems entirely righteous at first — but as they travel through Europe, picking off the men on their hit list, anything resembling moral clarity soon vanishes.

FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS/LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA (2006)
Clint Eastwood directed not one but two dramas about the punishing Allied campaign to take Iwo Jima at the end of WWII. In Flags, the U.S. government forces the soldiers who hoisted the stars and stripes above the island in the iconic photograph into uncomfortable propaganda roles when they return home. And in the Japanese-language Letters, we see the same bloody battle from the other perspective, as Ken Watanabe's Gen. Kuribayashi struggles to maintain dignity amid rising casualties.

I was surprised that they didn't include "The War At Home", a film which takes place after a soldier returns home from Vietnam, as he struggles to deal with the horrors he experienced; the film stars Emilio Estevez, Kathy Bates, and Martin Sheen.

Another antiwar film which I would highly recommend is "Jacob's Ladder". It stars Tim Robbins and Danny Aielo, and is kind of hard to explain. IMDB describes it as, "A traumatized Vietnam war veteran finds out that his post-war life isn't what he believes it to be when he's attacked by horned creatures in the subway and his dead son comes to visit him." It seems like a horror film in many ways, but has a very interesting plot twist at the end, which still gives me goosebumps when I think about it. I cannot recommend this film highly enough. After Simon & Garfunkel, one of the most successful duos in pop history, split up in 1970, Art Garfunkel became a solo artist, as well as pursuing an acting career. Garfunkel's pure, high tenor had been one of the most distinctive elements of the duo's music, yet he wasn't responsible for the songwriting -- Simon wrote all of the group's hits. Not surprisingly, Garfunkel relied on other songwriters, from Jimmy Webb and Randy Newman to rock & roll standards like "I Only Have Eyes for You," throughout his solo career. As a solo performer, he was never quite as successful as he was with Simon & Garfunkel, yet he did have a number of Top 40 hits in the mid-'70s

Garfunkel didn't begin a solo career until 1973. Between 1970 and 1973, he acted, appearing in two Mike Nichols films, Catch 22 and Carnal Knowledge. Angel Clare, his first solo record, was co-produced with Simon & Garfunkel producer Roy Halee and released in the fall of 1973. It established the style -- a light, carefully arranged and constructed melodic soft rock -- he would follow throughout his solo career. The album became a Top Ten hit on the strength of the single "All I Know," which peaked at number nine. Two years later, he returned with the Richard Perry-produced Breakaway, the most successful album of his solo career. The record peaked at number seven, with a version of the Flamingos' "I Only Have Eyes for You" reaching number 18 on the U.S. charts; in Britain, the single topped the charts. That same fall, he reunited with Paul Simon for the first time, performing on Saturday Night Live. In December, Simon's "My Little Town," featuring Garfunkel on backing vocals, became a Top Ten hit.In the fall of 1977, Garfunkel released his third album, Watermark, which primarily consisted of Jimmy Webb covers. However, when the first single from the album failed to chart, the album was reissued in early 1978 with a cover of Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World" that featured supporting vocals from Simon and James Taylor. Released as a single, "Wonderful World" peaked at number 17. The following year, Fate for Breakfast appeared. Although it performed well in Britain, reaching number two, the album signalled that his American audience was beginning to shrink: None of the singles made the Top 40 and the album only reached number 67. In the fall of 1979, he filmed two movies, Bad Timing and Illusions. Scissors Cut, a reunion with producer Roy Halee released in 1981, did nothing to reverse his sliding commercial potential -- it didn't even break into the Top 100 albums.

After the release of Scissors Cut, Simon & Garfunkel reunited for a concert in New York's Central Park. The concert was so successful, the duo decided to embark on a year-long world tour. During the tour, tensions mounted between the pair and they split again after it was completed. After a lengthy quiet period, Garfunkel re-emerged in 1988 with Lefty, which spent a mere eight weeks in the American charts and failed to make the British charts. He did not release another album until 1993's rarities compilation Up 'til Now. Quite naturally, all of Garfunkel's albums contain echoes of Simon and Garfunkel's Sixties hits. On Scissors Cut, Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle's acoustically based "A Heart in New York" not only recaptures the translucent texture of such Simon and Garfunkel classics as "America" but spices up the duo's signature sound with a hot pinch of R&B saxophone. He hasn't sounded this good since "Bridge over Troubled Water." (RS 354)

Yesterday I suggested that I wanted to talk about male singing voices. It seems to me that in much of popular/rock music there are just not that many "great" male voices. There are some great singers, some great musicians, etc, but when you get down to basics, they just don't have the best voices.

Good examples are some of my favorite artists. Billy Joel, to me a music god, but not a great voice. Harry Chapin is another of my gods with perhaps one of the worst singing voices of recording artists (I know he is dead and I should not speak ill of the dead, but it is the truth, and if he were alive I don't think he would disagree!). Even the holiest of holy, The Beatles did not have the greatest of voices (although they are not at all near the bottom of the list).

I have long given thought to what male artists have great voices. I have discussed two here so far. One is Art Garfunkel. Listen to "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and you will not only be blown away by the amazing song, but by his powerful and clear voice. He has a remarkable range and can sing almost anything. The other singer I mentioned is Dennis De Young of Styx. A very different style than Garfunkel, but nonetheless a wonderful voice.

For my song of the day, I am going to add another name to my great male voices list. And please, no snickering! John Denver. I have always liked John Denver, probably because my mom listened to him so much. He had a remarkable way with words, and his voice can only be described as sweet sounding. He skillfully combined country/western music with pop music and he crossed over to the pop charts more than almost any other country singer (in fact, I don't really consider him a country singer).

He had many great songs, but I think that my favorite is one called "Looking For Space." Rather than speak about it, here is a link to the lyrics. I would love comments with other candidates of best male voice!

In a career dating back to the 1950s, Paul Simon has established himself among the best and most popular songwriters of the rock era. Growing up in Queens, NY, Simon befriended schoolmate Art Garfunkel, who had an angelic tenor voice, and the two teamed up as Tom & Jerry, taking the names of the cartoon characters. In the winter of 1957-1958, they scored a chart hit with "Hey Schoolgirl"; both were 16 years old. Simon continued to try to score hits in the late '50s and early '60s, reaching the charts briefly in 1962 in the group Tico & the Triumphs with "Motorcycle" and under the name Jerry Landis in 1963 with "The Lone Teen Ranger." He and Garfunkel teamed up again as a folk duo in Greenwich Village, signed to Columbia Records, and released Wednesday Morning, 3 AM (October 1964). The album flopped initially, but Simon, who had been spending a lot of time in England, was picked up as a solo artist by CBS and recorded The Paul Simon Songbook, released only in Great Britain in the spring of 1965.

In the wake of the folk-rock trend prevalent that year, producer Tom Wilson took the acoustic track "The Sound of Silence" from the Wednesday Morning album, overdubbed electric guitar, bass, and drums and released the result as a single in October 1965, a full year after the album's release. It took off and hit number one, establishing Simon & Garfunkel. For the next five years, they were one of the most successful acts in pop music. Simon wrote the songs, and the two harmonized on a series of hit singles and albums. They split up in 1970, after the release of their most popular album, Bridge Over Troubled Water. Simon returned to solo work with Paul Simon (January 1972), which could not hope to match the success of Bridge, but which did sell a million copies and featured the reggae-tinged Top Ten single "Mother and Child Reunion." There Goes Rhymin' Simon (May 1973) was another million-seller, containing the hits "Kodachrome" and "Loves Me Like a Rock." After a 1974 live album, Simon released Still Crazy After All These Years (October 1975), which topped the charts, won the Grammy for Album of the Year, and included the number one hit "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover."

Simon took his time following this success, though he did release a greatest-hits album featuring a new hit, "Slip Slidin' Away," and contributed to a remake of "What a Wonderful World" with Garfunkel and James Taylor. Moving to Warner Bros. Records, he wrote and starred in the film One Trick Pony (August 1980), the soundtrack of which contained the Top Ten hit "Late in the Evening."

Another three years passed before Simon returned with Hearts and Bones (October 1983), which did not match his usual level of commercial success. Simon experimented with songwriting styles and became interested in South African music, resulting in Graceland (August 1986), which became his biggest-selling solo album and won him another Album of the Year Grammy. Four years later, he delivered The Rhythm of the Saints (October 1990), which did for Brazilian music what Graceland had done for South African music and was another multi-platinum seller. Simon played a free concert in Central Park in August 1991 (ten years after Simon & Garfunkel had done one) and released a live album from the show. In 1993, Warner Bros. released a box set retrospective on Simon's career, and he undertook a tour that featured Garfunkel on their old hits, as well as covering other aspects of his career. He spent the next several years writing a stage musical, +The Capeman, and released his own version of its score as Songs from the Capeman (November 1997). The show, which starred Rubén Blades and Marc Anthony, opened on Broadway in early 1998 and was a quick failure. In 1999, Simon toured on a double bill with Bob Dylan. His next album, You're the One, was released in October 2000. It went gold and earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. In 2006 Simon released Surprise, a collection of new material featuring three songs written with Brian Eno. ~ William Ruhlmann

Readers, prepare to be amazed. And perhaps intimidated. Not content to be one celestial-voiced half of Simon & Garfunkel, as well as an actor and an environmentalist, Art Garfunkel also has kept a list of every book he's read since 1968.

I haven't had time to read the whole list yet, much less the books, but I think Mr. G's a few tomes ahead of me. Most of these are heavyweight books, too. But, while I haven't yet tackled Descartes' Discourse on Method or Rousseau's Emile, I did manage to read every Travis McGee novel by the late John D. MacDonald.
