There ain't no such thing as a free lunch!

Winamp, voy a extrañarte :(

Windows Media Player, adios!

sudo apt-get install programa1 programa2 etc etc

Programas recomendados

Para instalar debemos correr "sudo apt-get install amarok"

Para instalar "sudo apt-get install amsn".

sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc"

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

• Añadimos estas líneas para Gutsy:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/lxde/ubuntu gutsy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/lxde/ubuntu gutsy main

• O estas otras si usamos Hardy:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/lxde/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/lxde/ubuntu hardy main

• Guardamos el archivo y actualizamos la lista.

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude install lxde

Synaptic gave me at least 15 minutes of pure unmitigated frustration this afternoon when it started choking with this piece of gibberish:

407 Proxy Authentication Required

I'd already configured my proxy settings in apt.conf and my bashrc file, and had assigned the right values to the http_proxy and ftp_proxy variables, not to mention the fact that synaptic had been working okay earlier in the day with no problems so this came as a surprise. Just to make pin-point the problem, I dropped into the terminal and did a sudo apt-get update... worked fine. Tried installing something with apt-get... worked. Tried downloading something with wget... worked fine. Yet synaptic would still not work.

In the end, I tracked down the problem to gksu. When I launched synaptic like so

gksudo synaptic

The problem just disappears and synaptic works... weird. So I used the Alacarte menu editor (right-click on the menu icon and select 'Edit Menus') to change the entry for synaptic package manager from

gksu /usr/sbin/synaptic

to

gksudo /usr/sbin/synaptic

I don't know what caused this problem and I probably should file a bug report somewhere...

124,17 km in 4.30.12 (27,573 km/u). 1780 hoogtemeters
col du pointu (499m), cote de sainte-anne (512m) & col de l'aire del masco (696m).

Rit 2: "Vlakke" rit.
99,54 km in 3.42.14 (26,874 km/u). 1360 hoogtemeters
col des trois termes (574m)

Rit 3: Signal de Lure
148,66 km in 5.47.41 (25,654 km/u). 2700 hoogtemeters
signal de lure (1720m), col de val martine (646m), col des quatre chemins (643m)

Rit 4: Mont Ventoux vanuit Sault
130.30 km in 4.54.49 (26,518 km/u). 2200 hoogtemeters
mont ventoux (1912m), pas du voltiguer (328m), col de veaux (386m), col de la liguère (998m).

Rit 5: Gorges de la Nesque - Fôret de Saint-Lambert
121,31 km in 4.38.13 (26,162 km/u). 1800 hoogtemeters
col de murs (627m), col blanc (373m), gorges de la nesque (739m), col faraud (678m), col de la ligne (756m).

Rit 6: Door de Lubéron deel twee
118,83 in 4.21.23 (27,277 km/u). 1700 hoogtemeters

Everytime I am surprised that people don’t know that apt-get works on RPM-based distributions

Everytime I am surprised that people don't know that apt-get works on RPM-based distributions and works much better than the alternatives. Especially in a CentOS/RHEL environment where you have various distribution releases running, apt-rpm allows you to use the same apt version and the same apt features across CentOS/RHEL 2.1, 3, 4 and 5.

In an attempt to persuade you to try out apt, let me denounce some myths about the current apt-rpm:

it can do multilib (coexist 32bit and 64bit)

it does check GPG keys on packages

it can work with repomd repositories (as used by yum)

it does work a lot faster than yum

it is being maintained (although could use more hands)

it has python bindings

is has a graphical interface (synaptics)

it handles multiple repositories much better

it allows to pin packages by version or repository (and manages cross-dependencies)

Now, because I can say it works great but you may not believe me, let me make it very simple for you to try it out on CentOS. Here is a quickstart guide...

First we start off installing apt from RPMforge. Follow the guide on the CentOS wiki to configure RPMforge for your system. Then do:

yum install apt

(or alternatively install the latest apt RPM package from http://packages.sw.be/apt/ for your distribution)

and then edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/os.list and add for CentOS:

repomd http://mirror.centos.org/ centos/$(VERSION)/os/$(ARCH)
repomd http://mirror.centos.org/ centos/$(VERSION)/updates/$(ARCH)
repomd http://mirror.centos.org/ centos/$(VERSION)/extras/$(ARCH)

This adds the official CentOS os, updates and extras repositories.

Now you can use it, for example do:

apt-get update

to update the locally cached metadata, or do:

apt-get upgrade

to upgrade your system with the latest updates, or yet, do:

apt-get install synaptic

to install a package named synaptic. Try:

synaptic

to start synaptic and use the graphical interface (also available from System > Administration > Synaptic Package Management)

There are a few commands that use the locally cached metadata, the following apt-cache commands are used most often:

apt-cache search keyword

to search the local metadata for packages related to keyword, or:

apt-cache policy package

to show the different versions of a certain package that is offered.

PS And let me also add that the project name is apt-rpm, not apt4rpm (a complete different project).

First: it’s 3:16 AM in the morning, and I have yet to go to sleep. I think I’m startin

First: it's 3:16 AM in the morning, and I have yet to go to sleep. I think I'm starting to get used to requiring less and less sleep to function during the day - a good thing, actually, considering the business I'm trying to get into!

Anyway... so, like I've said before, having this site has opened up the flood gates in terms of my creativity. Of course, even I know that, as a person currently doing all this stuff solo, there's only so far I can go before I'll want to involve other people. One of these avenues, of course, is my music videos.

Some of the songs I write tell stories where I'm interacting with other people. The problem is, at the moment I'm the only person starring in these videos, and the few people I know here in Atlanta seem to be camera shy (or, at the very least, opposed to appearing on YouTube, lest the whole world see it). It sucks because I have all these great ideas for videos, but can't use them at the moment because I don't know anybody willing to help out...

Well, scratch that - I just found out today that one of the girls I work with actually got her degree in... well, I forget, but it involves casting, and she said she might know some up-and-coming actors looking to build up their resume by starring in my videos. Which works great for me - I wouldn't have to pay them (though I probably would so they could put on their resumes that they were "paid" to be in a video), and I could expand my video-making capabilities!

In the meantime... so, I was going to shoot one video, but I really want to use another girl and guy in the video. I'm going to try my darndest to get them; in the meantime, though, I thought of a GREAT song I could do this week. It's a great idea because it involves me re-making one of the hottest beats currently out there, while at the same time talking about certain current events in this country.

I can't give too much away, but I'm pretty sure this song will end up being as big as "Erectile Dysfuction" is (currently at 11,000 views and counting!). I know of at least one person who will like the song (I'm talking about YOU, Ms. Goff), which is enough reason for me to make it. I haven't written the song yet, and the only thing I have so far is the chorus, but I have off all day Friday to make the song AND record the video. (Well, that, and I'll probably catch a movie - can we say "Love Guru" AND "Get Smart" in the same day?!?)

Okay, that's it from me - I'll probably write more later this week. Then again, maybe not. Either way, definitely check back here Sunday!

-A.P.T.

Before I begin: I just realized that these blogs get imported to Facebook, yet they don't attach the actual link to my site. Therefore, whenever I type these from now on, I'll be leaving the link address under my name - if you're reading this on facebook, GO TO MY SITE!! You can download my new songs there!

Anyway... so, I did the first record for my new song last night, and have to make the video for it between now and Sunday. Unfortunately, it just dawned on me that, aside from today and Saturday morning, I will (tentatively) be working full days for the remainder of the week!

In short, that means I have to shoot most of the video today. I already had plans made for today (most not really important - getting a haircut, cleaning my place up, etc.), but I like having busy days because... well, it's better than sitting around doing nothing!

The song is so new, I haven't even memorized it yet. Luckily, the concept for the video doesn't require me to mouth the words to the song. It will consist mostly of... HEY! Wait a minute! I can't give away TOO much! Guess you'll have to wait until Sunday!

Okay, I will say this much - this will the the first video where the majority of it will NOT take place in my apartment. It's nice weather outside, and I live right next to the park. The only thing I have to worry about is the occasional purple lines my camera films when it gets too much sunlight in the shot. I promise you, once I get a little more money, the first thing I'm doing is upgrading to a REAL digital camera, instead of my current method of using my Kodak picture cam's video capabilities (which, while good, isn't as high of a quality as I'd like).

Okay, I'm off to make some breakfast, then map out my filming schedule. I have plans at 5 PM today, and it's 8:30 AM right now, which gives me 8-1/2 hours to film something. It's a good thing I get up at 6:30 every morning - with no alarm!

APT Australia Chapter is holding a two-day symposium on the conservation of rural timber outbuildings on 4-5 July 2008, in conjunction with the Historic Houses Trust of NSW. APT members may attend at the concessional (members) rate. Please note that the event is being marketed to HHT members, and places will fill quickly. For bookings, telephone 02 8239 2211 and state that you are a member of APT.

Introduction
The rural landscape to the north west of Sydney was once populated with impressive timber structures built for the purpose of housing produce, equipment and animals. These barns and rural outbuildings are disappearing at an alarming rate for want of care and understanding of their significance, and the skills to conserve them. This two-day event aims to raise awareness and elevate technical knowledge about conserving the surviving vernacular timber and iron structures of the Cumberland Plain.

Day 1 | technical symposium| Friday 4 July | 9am – 5pm
A technical symposium exploring the traditional construction methods and conservation techniques for slab barns and timber outbuildings on the Cumberland Plain.

The day’s activities include a demonstration of timber working by craftsmen from rural Victoria and an inspection of the rare group of outbuildings at Rouse Hill House & Farm.

Speakers include: Professors Ian Jack (University of Sydney) and Miles Lewis (University of Melbourne) and local conservation practitioners specialising in structural analysis, timber technology, roofing systems and conservation works.

Day 2 | tour of sites| Saturday 5 July | 9am – 5pm
A tour of significant sites includes an early slab-built vernacular house, timber barns in the Hawkesbury District and demonstrations of vernacular timber working at the new Hawkesbury Regional Museum in Windsor.

Hey everybody!

Well, another week is coming to a close. Thank goodness!

I had 3 full days off work this week, and I used those days to make as much headway into my various projects as possible. OH, you didn't know I had a life outside of work? Well, let me assure you, I am a VERY creative guy!

I spent the 3 days getting some much-needed personal errands run - paying bills, cleaning (and re-messying up) my place, grocery shopping, etc... but the BIG thing I did was to revamp my website for my book!

Oh, you didn't know I had written a book? Well, I did! I actually wrote it 4 years ago, and even sold a few copies of it back in 2006 for $39.99 each... but up until a few weeks ago I didn't really know how to advertise for it.

Then, I read Tim Ferriss's book, "The 4-Hour Workweek" and figured out how to do it! But, before I go and place a link on yahoo or Google for the site, I figured the website I made for the book 2 years ago needed a touch-up. And so, that's what I did - it's about 85% complete now, and I'll be putting a link up for it on Yahoo and/or Google sometime next week!

With all the stuff I did involving my other site, I still remembered that I have to put a video/song up on this one for Sunday! The video I'm putting up this week is for a HILARIOUS song I wrote! I thought of the chorus for the song while at work one day, and just KNEW I had to complete it!

I'll give you more insight into the song come Sunday. Truthfully, I shot the video for it LAST week, but due to some file errors (read: I. HATE. WINDOWS. MOVIE. MAKER.) I wasn't able to publish it. So, I'll be spending the majority of Saturday re-editing it, but once it's done, I think you all will definetely appreicate it!

Okay, that's all for now - see you Sunday!
