Fans of the freestyle portion of our Off-Night Spectacular are in for a special treat as Anthony V. and crew have spun it off into its own show.

The Freeze provides non-stop action throughout this mash-up of music, comedy and freestyle rap. The musicians and MCs use audience suggestions to spontaneously combust into musical creations inspired by funk, improvisational comedy and hip-hop. You have to see it more than once to believe it, but it's one night only for now- so don't miss your chance!

The show is going to be the hottest thing Monday night has ever seen. So bring your friends, the kids, loved ones and your enemies - we all about to share some ice cold love.

The songs do all have one thing in common - I've been making loud noises in vague harmony with all of them as I sat at the traffic lights in Clevedon, with the window open. Always busy with pedestrians those traffic lights. In fact I think they have gatherings now whenever they know I'll be there. There must be a Facebook group, maybe possibly.

Anyway...

1. Isaac Hayes - Theme From Shaft:

My singing to this one is restricted to 'Whats happening Shaft?' and 'He's a bad mother', 'Watch your mouth'

2. Bad Company - Feel Like Making Love:

To this one I tend to just bounce my head a bit and do the 'doo-doo doo-doo, feel like making love' bit, with a crescendo at 'feel like making love to yooooou'.

It isn't pretty, but I'm a dad now so figure I can get away with such things.

3. Please Don't Touch - Motorhead & Girlschool

I always thought that Girlschool were a proto-L7, a kind of not-so-acceptable-to-your-parents Suzi Quatro. My singing on this one is limited to the part I can't remember, which is the couplet about cheap motel and Eskimo Nell.

4. Beverley Knight - Come as you are

Not someone I particularly like, as whilst she has the voice she never seems to have the songs. This one however, I can sing the whole way thru, and have at times forgotten I'm wearing headfones pushing a pram into school. Not for the faint of heart.

5. The Smiths - Shoplifters of The World Unite and Take Over

Truly great song that I know most of the words too and can do aeroplane impressions with my shirt hanging out. Not whilst driving though, as you tend to knock the interior mirror.

6. Blow Monkeys - Digging You Scene

I never really liked these at the time, but this song has grown on me over the last couple of decades and I can sing with a lisp, and pronounce 'bay-hi-bee' correctly, 4 or 5 times out of ten.

7. Placebo - The Bitter End

I really shouldn't play this one whilst driving, as I get a knot in my chest and hyperventilate. Not sure why.

8. Charlotte Church - Crazy Chick

This, I can't understand particularly liking, but I do and comfort myself with the fact that at least it isn't Kylie. Obviously the chorus I harmonise.

9. Counting Crows - Mr Jones

Another band that actually bore me a lot of the time, but this is a classic and includes a la-la-la.

10. Dionne Warwick - Walk on By

I tend to do the little staccato crunchy sound on this one

11. E&TBM - Do It Clean

The song that the Mighty Lemon Drops turned into a minor career, and I keep going back to.

12. Eddie Cochran - C'Mon Everybody

I grew up being told that Cochran was better than Elvis, and in a way I think he was a bit more 'For Real'. I've always thought that his Three Stars, if released as a poem, would have changed history and 'the kids' would have turned their backs on rock and roll and spent their times writing Haiku in coffee bars ever since. Which would have probably meant that Simon Armitage would be headlining Wembley, and Seamus Heaney would be still trying to get over Marianne Faithful, and this Record club would involve retyping from Faber manuals. Its the little things.

13. Housemartins - Happy Hour

Four dorks from Hull bouncing around like eegits. Good singalong stuff though, and with a nice political underbelly..la la la

14. Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower

Bob Dylan lyrics, with the added bonus of a bit of sad-dad air guitar too. Can't beat it.

15. Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat

More a maudlin Friday night/Saturday morning in your cups singalong than most of the rest, but I think laffin' Len's finest ever song. Oranges or no oranges.

16. The Osmonds - Crazy Horses

The first pop/rock record I ever wanted when it first came out, but my Mom wouldn't buy it me. Think I was about four. Which was a killer as my cousin had Puppy Love which I hated but got stuck with listening to every saturday afternoon. Clearly it is the 'waaaaahhhh wwwaaaahhhh' that I try my best to join in with.

17. Sinead O'Connor - Drink Before The War

This closely follows Famous Blue Raincoat on a 'am I pissed enough to cry' evening, and you have to be in a certain mindset to replicate the howling.

18. Stray Cats - Runnaway Boys

It could have been any of their songs really, love them all.

19. T-Rex - Children of the Revolution

Slightly worried about my addiction to singers who shouldn't mix cars and trees, but again, Bolan was good in patches, but this is majestic

20. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer

Another one you can singalong to even if you don't know the words, with the added bonus that you can sound as though you can speak French too. I travelled europe singing this song for a while which was made easier by the fact that nobody wants to talk to you.

21. Sly & The Family Stone - Dance to the music

And who wouldn't want to.

I often get depressed about the direction in which this world is heading.  I go about my daily life, and I try to be social and open to strangers, but I almost always find myself confused and under whelmed.  I often find myself not understanding what people are talking about, and it’s not because I’m stupid, but because a lot of people speak so vaguely that I find myself struggling to interpret what they’re saying.   My mind works abstractly, and I just can’t deal with people who only think and communicate in a concrete manner.  When I ask someone a question, I very rarely want a one word answer; I can’t do anything with that.

But I digress.  I was saying that the world is going down the tubes.  Nothing proves this to me more than my “Google Analytics” report for this blog.  In the report, I can find out what terms people searched for to arrive at my blog.  I understand that I bring some of this on myself, and it’s understandable that “boner” or “titties” are going to pop up here and there.  Today, I think the wheels have officially fallen off the wagon.

At 8:34 (Central) this morning, someone found my blog after searching for “is it illegal to talk dirty online?”  I find this really troubling for a number of reasons

1) That’s awfully early to be concerned about the legality of cyber sex.

2) The search itself leads me to believe that the person who made the search is a total creep.  Why would it be illegal to talk dirty online?  Is it illegal to talk dirty in person?  Talking dirty is totally legal unless you’re harassing someone.  This seems so obvious that I have to believe that the searcher was talking about talking dirty to children.  And just in case anyone else searches for that and finds this blog in the future: yes.  It is illegal to talk dirty to children online.

Yet, this likely pedophile is not the most alarming thing about my search report.  Just over two hours later, at 10:41 in the AM, someone (God help them) searched for “Anthony Hopkins fucking.”  What?

I know that celebrity sex tapes are quite en vogue these days, and I understand that even if a celebrity isn’t very attractive (Chyna), there is still a sick, voyeuristic fascination in the public’s part, but this is too much.  Anthony Hopkins doesn’t even want to see Anthony Hopkins fucking.

I understand the hullabaloo over a possible Mini Me sex tape, since he is a surly drunk midget, but I cannot abide by the possibility of an Anthony Hopkins sex tape.  I cannot abide by anyone wanting to see an Anthony Hopkins sex tape.  Seriously, I have a lunch to eat.

On a totally unrelated note, does anyone know how I can get my hands on a video of Robert Duvall getting a BJ?

Congressman Anthony Weiner held a grand press conference this weekend, complete with charts and graphs, calling on Government to double funding for the Workforce Investment Act: a federal initiative that pays for summer jobs and “job training” for teenagers.

He cited the recent reports showing that there aren’t enough summer jobs for teenagers these days.

But here’s the rub. If you simply take a gander at any one of the small business in the New York Metro area that would *normally* employ these scrappy, acne-prone young workers: construction sites, restaurants, retail counters, etc… you’d quickly realize that they’re mostly staffed with, you guessed it, illegal immigrants.

I’d call it New York’s “dirty little secret” only it’s so out in the open, so brazen that it’s neither a “secret”, or anywhere near “little”.

The sad truth is New York is so endorsing of this insidious brand of quasi-slave labor that all the “usual” summer jobs that teenagers used to flock to between school years are no longer an option.

And of course, due to the socialist-lite society we find ourselves living in these days, instead of saying “um, excuse me… but you’re not technically supposed to be here… and you’re taking jobs that our citizens would like to do… would you mind waiting in line like everyone else?”... we instead call on the GOVERNMENT to pump BILLIONS OF DOLLARS into some hair-brained PROGRAM paid for with MY tax dollars.

Really?

Please, wake me up when this nightmare is over.

If I'm not wrong Anthony is one of the coolest dude in Indian startup community (at least the one whom I've come across to). It's always fun going through the mails that he keeps sharing (read SPAM :)).

A little late on this but, the Everything Else Exhibition will host it's opening exhibition today ( Thursday, June 19th) from 6 to 8PM at the Franklin Parrasch Gallery in New York City.

No worries though the exhibit will run until August 30, 2008.  The gallery will house works from such artist as Jason Adkins, Bryan Bowie, Anthony Campuzano, and KAWS just to name a few.  As some of you know KAWS is well known for his vinyl creations and the exhibit will feature a 4 foot KAWS Companion and 50 x 60 KAWS interpretation of the Smurfs.

Steeds meer kerken geraken betrokken in Operatie Getemde Tijger en zien er een geweldige kans in voor Antwerpen. We hopen dat u dit hoopvol vlammetje in eigen kerk aansteekt, zoveel boeken als mogelijk verkoopt en erbij bent op de infoavond op 22 september in Deurne.

Op de site van de Getemde Tijger kan je veel meer informatie vinden. Daarbij moet je weten dat er ook een boek is, genaamd "Getemde Tijger". Op het moment ben ik 'm aan het lezen.

Telkens wanneer je een boek koopt, gaat er één boek naar de gevangenis. Het boek is niet zo duur, dus echt wel de moeite een verrijking te zijn voor dit werk. :-) Zelf heb ik het gekregen... Blessed me huh... :-)

Er zullen verscheidene punten komen in België waar je het boek zal kunnen verkrijgen. Je kan het via de website van Getemde Tijger bestellen, maar ook via andere. Wens je iets meer informatie, laat dan even wat weten.

Anthony Hamilton (nacido en Charlotte, Carolina del Norte el 28 de enero de 1971), es un cantante de R&B/soul/neo soul y compositor de canciones que llegó a la fama con su álbum Comin' From Where I'm From de 2003, donde se incluían los singles "Comin' from Where I'm From", "Charlene" y "I'm a Mess". So Madeline and I have been talking quite a bit about how there is a baby in mommy's belly and how she is going to be a big sister. I've mentioned in the past how Madeline talks to the baby through my bellybutton. She says hi to him and tells him she loves him. She also likes to give my belly kisses, and use it as a stalling technique during naptime...how can I resist it when she tells me she needs to give the baby a kiss goodnight?

Well, one of the things we have been talking about is how she is going to have a baby brother and how his name is going to be Anthony. We are practicing saying his name, and lately Madeline has been telling me that Anthony is a Wiggle. For those of you who do not have a toddler, the Wiggles are a group of Australian men with a kids television show full of songs and skits. Madeline enjoys watching it quite a bit and knows a number of their songs and dances. It just so happens that the blue Wiggle's name is Anthony.

So, basically every time we talk about Madeline's baby brother she mentions that he is a Wiggle and I am pretty sure that Madeline is expecting me to give birth to a Wiggle. I'm not sure how she will react when Anthony is born without a blue jump suit and a shiny Wiggle's belt buckle. I love the way her little mind thinks, even though I think she might be disappointed when she realizes what is really going on!

Ze groeiden allebei in Nijmegen op, maar eind jaren '60 pakten hun ouders de koffers om te emigreren naar Amerika. Eddie en Alex gingen uiteraard mee, en zoals zoveel leeftijdsgenoten besloten ze een bandje op te richten. De naam was gemakkelijk gevonden: Van Halen, maar dan wel op z'n Engels uitgesproken. Véén Heelen dus.

Zanger werd ene David Lee Roth, een nogal opvallende vent die ze begin jaren '70 hadden ontmoet. Een echt uitstekende zanger was hij niet, maar hij had wel gevoel voor show - iets wat de rock 'n roll van eind jaren '70 zo miste, vond hij. Z'n broeken waren strakker, z'n haren waren langer, z'n uithalen waren hoger en z'n veroveringen onder de vrouwen waren groter dan die van z'n collega-rockers.

Met een goede zanger alléén kom je er niet, dus werd er ook het een en ander verwacht van de broertjes Van Halen zelf. Alex werd drummer, Eddie leerde zichzelf gitaarspelen. Dat deed 'ie niet onverdienstelijk, want het waren juist z'n gitaartrucjes waardoor Van Halen in 1978 opviel. 'Running With The Devil' was de eerste single (opgenomen in een halve dag), en die was meteen raak - de single werd een wereldhit en Van Halen's naam was definitief gevestigd.

Maar terwijl de halve Amerikaanse muziekwereld Van Halen probeerde te kopiëren (wat bijna nooit lukte, want de stijl van de band was daarvoor toch té uniek), ging het in de band zelf minder goed - David Lee Roth kreeg ruzie met de Van Halen-broers en stapte uit de band. Sammy Hager was z'n opvolger, maar ook die samenwerking eindigde in ruzie.

Jarenlang bleef de band een 'groep in ruste'. Maar het bloed kroop toch weer waar het niet gaan kon, en dus werden alle strijdbijelen begraven. In 2008 gaat Van Halen (mét David Lee Roth!) weer op tournee, alsof er in de afgelopen twintig jaar niets is gebeurd. Ook dat kan alleen maar in Van Halen...

In schöner Regelmäßigkeit wechselt Lippman zwischen ihre Serie um Tess Monaghan und Einzelbüchern, in deren Zentrum üblicherweise pubertierende Mädchen und adoleszente Frauen stehen. What the Dead Know ist wieder ein Einzelbuch, sogar ein besonderes, greift es doch scheinbar ein in Baltimore stadtbekanntes Geschehen auf.

1975: zwei Schwestern 11 und 15 Jahre, verschwinden in einer Einkaufpassage und tauchen nie wieder auf. 30 Jahre später, nach einem Verkehrsunfall behauptet eine Frau die jüngere der beiden Schwestern zu sein. Es könnte wahr sein, muss aber nicht, sie scheint die damalige Geschichte gut zu kennen, aber irgendwie sind die Polizisten nicht ganz überzeugt.

Die Geschichte wird über Raum und Zeit erzählt. Eine Vielzahl von Perspektivwechseln prägen diese Erzählung. Aus der Sicht der beiden Mädchen wird der Nachmittag ihres Verschwindens rekonstruiert, der damals zuständige Polizist, der Polizist der in der Gegenwart den Fall aufklären soll, die Sozialarbeiterin usw, alle erzählen ihre Sicht der Dinge. Den Eltern folgen wir durch die Zeit, und sehen was die Erlebnisse aus ihnen macht.

Manchmal, wie das im Leben so ist, passen die verschiedenen Sichtweise nicht zusammen, doch in aller Regel ergänzen sie sich und es bildet ein immer dichter werdendes Netz an Eindrücken und Wahrnehmungen. Die Geschichte ist auch und immer spannend, ohne das viel passierte. Kaum eine Actionszene, kaum verdichtete Dramatik findet sich und doch: Der ganz große Spannungsbogen tut sich hier auf. Unter all den Darstellungen simmert immer die Frage, ob denn die Geschichte, die die Frau erzählt, wahr ist oder ob sie nur eine schnöde Lügnerin ist. Irgendwie, so denkt der Leser, müssen doch diese vielen Eindrücke die da angehäuft werden, zusammengefügt werden können und auf ein großes Ganzes verweisen.

Lippman schreibt so wundervoll unprätentiös. Dass man fast übersehen könnte, wie viele kluge Beobachtungen und Anspielungen sie in den Text einbringt und die Personen, das sind wir bei Lippman gewöhnt, stehen plastisch im Raum. Am Ende bleibt die Feststellung, dass das ganze Gespinst trägt und Lippman die ganze Zeit aufrecht und richtig die Fakten unter unsere Nase gehalten hatte.

Es gibt da kein Vertun: Lippman ist derzeit in den Staaten die Referenzautoren, die, ohne mit den Füßen aufzustampfen und zu sagen „Ich bin so literarisch“ genau dieses ist. Auch diejenigen, die nach Botschaften in Büchern suchen, werden hier mit Leichtigkeit fündig. Diesem Buch wäre auch eine umfangreiche Leserschaft in Deutschland zu wünschen, in den USA hat es Lippman das erste Mal in den „Olymp“ der NYT-Bestsellerliste geführt.

Tatsächlich sind 1975 in Baltimore zwei Schwestern verschwunden und noch immer weiß man nicht, wo sie abgeblieben sind, aber wie Lippman im Nachwort betont, ist dieses schon fast die einzige Übereinstimmung zwischen Realität und Imagination.

Tijdens dit optreden heb ik een serieuze flater begaan: ik heb onlangs een nieuwe camera gekocht en ben hem nog niet gewoon. Mijn flits is per ongeluk een paar keer afgegaan, wat dus niet is toegestaan. Gelukkig ben ik niet buitengegooid ;)
