"Tyre Kharido, Car Free"!

Sounds funny? Might be, but believe me, it is true !!.

Couple of months back I came across with this advertisement in a national daily. Was curious to know the deal, on a close look found an * mark with conditions apply. And you can imagine the "condition"... the usual ones... "On purchase of so many tyres, your chance to win a car doubles up and blah blah...". Quite usual advertisements in print media or in electronic media. Every where one can find such conditions apply in almost zero font size; quite similar to the statutory warnings on Cigarate Packs. Not only that, the price of the selling items are hiked considerably in general, which go un-noticed by the customers as the attention gets diverted to the free tag. One should be very careful while going for these kind of deals and should understand the Conditions carefully. Else .... But unfortunately the conditions are never explained properly in the advertisements.

In a similar note, I came across with another advertisement "Cooler Kharido, Refrigerator Free"; during the hot summer days of Delhi. Was fascinated by the advertisement at that time. Next morning I went to that shop (spend some 4 hours to locate the shop and Rs 200/- by auto) to get the air cooler and a refrigerator. But, to my surprise the Air cooler which normally costs Rs 3000/- in the market, was labeled with Rs 6500/- and the free refrigerator was of no use for me as it was very small. Came back home on a sad note :( . I should have understood the conditions applied well before spending my time and money.

On a slightly different note, every one of us have experienced the famous "Buy one and Get one Free" deals in malls, in cinema halls or in eating joints like Pizza-Huts or Mc-cdonalds etc. These tag lines are to lure the customers to and to sell more. Customers buy more and spend more -- it does not matter whether the need of the free item as well as the first item is there or not! The tag line "Buy one and Get one Free" is just another marking concept and a sales promotion method for shops, companies and dealers. Companies/dealers usually adopt this method to clear the stock or to quickly reach the market. One should not get lured by the word FREE, instead should realize Nothing is Free, some thing or other has to be paid to get that which appears to be Free.

Selling something and giving something free is becoming a regular marketing concept; either buy one get one free (of the same or different item) or "buy two get one free" or "buy this get that free", are free flowing tag lines now a days. Be it "buy one and get one free" or "buy this get that free", these lines are usually profitable to the company and can be profitable to the customers if they buy the items judiciously. It is profitable for the shop/compay in the sense that, shops usually hike the price of the first item to a certain extent (off course not by 100%!!), such that the price of the free item is covered to some extent. They earn profit from the huge amount of sales due to the promotional offer. The customers too can make the deal profitable, only if they there is a need to buy the items both first and the free item. Else, the customer will end up paying more not only for the first item, will waste the second item (happens mostly in food items). Being aware of the cost of the individual items definitely help the customers to decide, whether to go for the deal or not.

Saying that, let me narrate some of my experiences on the free purchases....

Recently, I went for a magazine deal and ended up paying Rs 1500/- for 3 years subscription, which was almost 50% of the regular price. Yes, it was profitable to me in one sense that I saved 50% on the price, not only that I also got a pair of shoes FREE :) . But, when critically analyzed, I realized that, it was not at all profitable to me. Because, neither I'm a fan of that magazine and nor I need a pair of shoes at this point of time. Not only that, the same magazine is also available for reading in my Hostel for free. So, what do you say? Profit or loss for me? But, it is definitely a profitable deal for the publisher. Not only the publisher got some money as investment (by bulk number of 3 years of subscriptions), but also, it got some sure-shot number of readers or customers, which can be priced to the advertising agencies in their future issues as the magazine reaches out for wide circulation.

In another case, one of my friends bought a washing machine for Rs 14000/- using his credit card (as he was short of money at that time). The reason being, he got a free item of Rs 700/- (got a Coffee maker by the scratch card) and a discount of 2%! Yes, by doing that the shop cleared the stock and sold many washing machines in a month's time; naturally increased its total profit. But, my poor friend, has a habbit of forgetting paying the credit card dues in time -- paid a fine of Rs 1500/- (including the interest and late fee) to the bank. Not only that, he never uses his coffee machine (as he does not drink tea/coffee). So for him, the deal was a total loss (which might be a proffit for some one else!). He hardly realizes and repeats his mistakes again and again :) .

Those are just some of the experiences; which every one of us have experienced in some or other context. So next time when you see "Buy one Get one Free" or "Tyre kharido, Car Free"... do not get fasinated, keep cool, think twice whether you really want to buy this and do you really need that free item or not... Else, you will end up with same stories :) .

Aamjunta ... what do you think?

Over the past few months I've come to see Scientology in many lights and there are definatley some bad things about Scientology, which I will not discuss in this post, but the protests by people who want to remain anonymous are coming to seem not so good either.

The manner in which you protests is very important when trying to get a message across and although it depends on your protest, if your protests are deamed peaceful (as are the ones lead by the people who want to remain anonymous) intimidation should be kept out. I think it's safe to say that people will always feel intimidated when their beliefs or the organisation they are working for are being attacked, but one should not have that as the main focus of the protests. I have a good example of a situation in which intimidation is both used and very wrong and one that shed light on why these anonymous protesters may be going about things the wrong way.

Harrods sell fur and are as far as I am aware the only company to sell fur in the London maybe even England. Anyway, every Saturday a small group of protesters gather outside Knightsbridge tube station and protest. I have only seen them do this peacefully but I am told by employees of Harrods that they are verbally abused by these protesters. That is to say that if someone who works in the electronics departement of Harrods comes out of the exit and is spotted by these protesters, they are harassed, and abused to the point of being told _they_ are murders. This is entirely wrong and not very nice for those employed by Harrods, they have no say over what Harrods sells and most of them have no direct impact or influence on what Harrods sells. This type of abuse is not helping the cause of the protest at all and is very abusive.

It is this type of activity that can be likened to hundreds of protesters shouting 'SCIENTOLOGY KILLS' or 'CULT' outside a Church of Scientology building once a month. The staff at those institues are very much being abused and harassed and this is not the right thing for a peaceful protest. It neither encourages those inside to seek help, nor does it make them aware of the wrong that Scientology may be doing. If anything it pushes them away, affirms their view of the protesters missinformed views and angers them.

It seems a lot of people have fun at these protests (as I have witnessed) and many leaflets seem to be handed out. Yet, if these protesters want to save Scientologists I fear they are not doing it right.

The story of the 4chan hack against SOHH.com and others.

In the early hours of June 27, 2008, two very popular Hip-Hop musical websites were attacked by individuals calling themselves “Anonymous”. MTV News reported that: “Both companies' sites were hacked, and instead of the usual hip-hop related news articles and feature stories, readers were shocked to find fake headlines and obviously photoshopped pictures saturated with racial slurs and other offensive terms; the hackers also stole personal information about employees of SOHH.com. A group or individual going by the name "Anonymous" has claimed responsibility.”

The CEO of SOHH.com, one of the attacked sites with over 1.5 million visitors per month, issued a statement, saying:

"It appears that hackers are specifically targeting Black, Hispanic, Asian and Jewish youth who ascribe to hip-hop culture. … Other websites, including AllHipHop and DatPiff forums have also been compromised or threatened this week. ... Also, as this is an international issue, it is being addressed by the FBI and the Strategic Alliance Cyber Crime Working Group."

The sites were defaced with Nazi symbols and targeted the Black community whose members regularly frequent the site for news.

The call for support was posted on a website called 411chan.org, a meeting place of the internet group "Anonymous" especially targeting Black people and minorities.

The systems of SOHH.com were damaged sufficiently to leave the site inaccessible for a week. Also the other attacked sites stayed partially disconnected from the internet.

EncyclopediaDramatica.com, a primary site of Anonymous chronicling the online activities of internet hackers on 4chan.org and 411chan.org, announced on 30 June 2008 that they will continue their “fight against niggers”:

“SOHH.com is a place for gay wiggers [slang: wanna-be niggers] to talk about cRap music using their native tounge of nigger language. Sohh.com is one of the highest-ranked online hip-Hop communities ....

“However, Anonymous has no regard for one's material gains or how "nannified" a racial demographic is -- Anonymous only exists to destroy. That lesson has been made abundantly clear to SOHH.com. …

“As SOHH is down, the leader of the Pro-Nigger Faction started a secondary ‘instead-of-SOHH’ site … The registrations are currently closed, but many of our soldiers managed to get in before the closing. As a result of this, there are currently operations underway to make sure this site does not achieve any sort of prosperity.” (Source: http://encyclopediadramatica.com/SOHH)

Spewing that load of shite out yesterday actually helped settle my nerves a bit. I'm still unsettled by the whole thing, but, at least now I don't have to keep it in. I think my hesitance in writing about it was simply in not wanting to reveal too much about myself or my Girl, but, for those of you who "know" me through this blog, I feel there's a level of trust here. And if some passerby blog surfer/lurker wants to be an ass, that's the way it goes.

There's the good and the bad to all this anonymous blogging. Over the past 3 months, I've experienced exponentially more good than bad. In fact, the only bad had nothing whatsoever to do with this, but someone outside of our little community, someone who dwells in those dark far off fucked up corners of the cyber sphere. As long as he and his creepers stay there, all is well.

Isn't that how we like our life all the time though? We want the safe fluffy comfort, and keep all the real shit of the world hidden away where we can easily ignore it. The problem is, that shit's always much closer than we want to believe, and can sneak up and kick you in the balls or knee caps when you're dreaming at the clouds.

But, with that in mind, I still want to study the clouds. Clouds are fucking awesome. I'm not gonna let fear invade my world of love. I'm not gonna let the destroyers stop me from creating. There's way too much good to be experienced, smiles to grin, jokes to laugh at, and people to love than to be dragged away and tortured by those dark thoughts and worries.

Sure, shit can happen. Shit can take you by surprise. I've had some horrible things jump out at me from nowhere that completely messed up my life as I knew it. But, I also know I've always pulled through, love ALWAYS prevails, and my life always seems to somehow, mysteriously, turn around for the better because of it.

In the end, there's always good in the blue.

When you feel threatened, it's so easy to tuck away, compromising who you are and what you believe; whether it's a fight with your girlfriend, or a battle in a war. Safety is important, but never all-important. Top priority should be your heart, your will, your values, your beliefs, your passions. Those are things that nobody can take from you.

The only time to compromise is out of love, for yourself or for others; never out of fear.

I'm spewing out all sorts of things here, and not pulling it together. I guess I'm just giving myself a pep talk. That's alright, right?

Yes. Alright.

.......................

I'm remembering one time when my Mother Dearest gave me a bad haircut. I had somewhat long hair at the time, and cut a deal with her that every time I saw her she could cut off an inch. At that time, I only saw her about once every couple months.

Well, one time she cut FAR MORE than an inch. Like 3. That was a drastic change that I was not at all happy about. I was so pissed at my Mom for giving me such a stupid haircut (why is a good haircut so important anyway?). I was red, and angry, and upset, and couldn't believe she did that, I was so frustrated and let down.

But the hardest part was, I knew she felt really really bad about it. And I HATED being so mad at my Mom when I knew she felt so bad, and that frustrated me even more.

That's such a confusing feeling; being so pissed off at a person, but at the same time trying to comfort them for pissing you off.

Something similar to that, but not NEARLY as extreme as a bad haircut happened this weekend with my Lady Love.

She wanted to go to the Gay Pride Parade and meet up with our good ol' pal Peter. (yes, the one who wanted in my pants) I was feeling a chilled out Sunday afternoon reading and sitting on my porch, bike riding to record stores, and just all around taking it easy. But, she had her heart set on going, so off we went. I forked out the $16 for the cab ride, we crammed our way through the crowd for 45 minutes to get about one block at a time, and finally when we got to the bar to meet our friend, what does my girl want to do?

Go home.

She was getting overwhelmed by the crowds and strangers, which I could completely empathize with, BUT, SHE WAS THE REASON WE WENT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

I knew it would be a mob of sweaty, drunk, overheating people. That's why I didn't want to steer too far from my peaceful, easy neighborhood. But now, after FINALLY reaching our friend, she wanted out of there.

So I said, alright, and we starting walking towards the train to get the hell out of there. I was a bit perturbed, obviously by her dragging me there, for no fucking reason. But then, she started tearing up. She really was just overwhelmed by the crowds and crowds of crazyness and people, it freaked her out. I understood, and hated seeing her so upset, but the entire time all I thought was, "Darling, what did you think you were going to? A small town church picnic??? Come on???!!!"

But, I bit my tongue like the fantastic Boyfriend I am, put my arm around her, and paid for the train ride home.

I spent twenty dollars to spend 3 hours going nowhere. Awesome.

We had to change from the red line to the blue line downtown to get to my house, and while waiting for the train there was a guy playing guitar and singing right by us. Certain old guys just know how to nail a song with full on heart. We danced together to some song old soul song about smiling. Moments like that, I'm happy to be so in love with such an amazing, beautiful girl. I gave the guy 3 bucks.

We had amazing sex that night. Twice.

I spent twenty-three dollars to spend 3 hours going nowhere.

Again, boys, bite your tongue. They know when you're swallowing blood for them, and they'll reward you later. And I mean REWARD!!!

Playing RIGHT now - Maybe Tomorrow - Stereophonics

PS - If anyone can tell me what band I referenced twice, I'll give a dashingly wonderful present.

I’m not one to gloat and rarely gamble but I’m thinking I should have a go on the lotter

I'm not one to gloat and rarely gamble but I'm thinking I should have a go on the lottery some time soon coz it seems that I've got a bit of a knack for forecasting.

This being the 1st of July and all, I suddenly remembered a comment I made on the original Vreel forum about when Vreel would be going live.

Someone had started a thread asking if we thought that Vreel would go live in May to which I replied that, not only would Vreel not be live in May, it wouldn't be live in June either. That nice Mr Hayes (CEO) rebuked me, taunted me even with his short response, "How much would you like to bet ;-) ".

I should have taken him up on his offer but clearly I was too chicken!

Sadly, Vreel still sits in open Beta with no plans for a launch which is disappointing because it will be truly memorable.

Back in the good old days, ( May 2008 ) Mr Hayes (then preferring to be called 'Dacovale') let slip of a secret weapon held in the Vreel arsenal. As part of a weighty rebuttal of many allegations leveled against the authenticity of the Vreel venture and Anonymous activities, Eoghan revealed that he counted actors (yes that is the plural form) as part of his staff. I assume this did not mean there were people pretending to be application developers but those of a thespian persuasion ready to unleash their talents in high definition to wow the world.

Who are these performing staffers? For now, I’m afraid we’ll just have to wait and see.

Or we could just speculate. Yes, let's speculate - it's one of my favourite pastimes. So, given the major investment that appears to have been made in Vreel, let's think big.

Could this be the new face of Vreel?

For more details on the many faces of Eoghan Hayes and not Tom Cruise, you'll need to start at the beginning of the series and work your way through.

This has been yet another interim post in an already confusing and disjointed series.

Failing to plan is planning to fail. ~ Anonymous

This is a very true saying. When ever you do anything - start a business, clean a room, give a speech - you should have a plan. The amount of planning needed varies considerably. If you are beginning a business, you should write down your plan. It should be one to ten pages long. If you are cleaning your room, you probably do not need to write down your plan. Just think over the basic outline in your head.
If you do not have a plan, you will be easily distracted. You will never be focused on one thing for long. Instead of starting a business, you will almost start five different businesses. This is a topic that I need to work on. I do not plan as much as I should. In fact, most of my planning is done in my head. As a result, I forget what I was planning to do. Planning is a very important part of life. The Bible also says that planning is important.

The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.
~ Proverbs 16:1

Here is says that man should plan, but the result of man's planning depends on God. We need to remember this also and not think that we are in charge of our destiny. God wants us to plan, and he also wants us to understand what our plans are - simply plans. Our plans will never be more than a dream if God does not bless them. We also need to remember that God knows best, and, if we are Christians he will always do what is best for us. Praise the Lord!

Blogging seems like this weird thing that people go home and do privately in the comfort of their own homes, away from having to talk to real people, from expressing themselves with open judgment from others.... unless someone comments on your blog you really don't know what others think of it, and the odd thing about a blog is that people can do it pretty much anonymously .... it's such an interesting thing to think of. I have started doing this blog surfing thing.....

I love people watching - I guess I kind of consider this people reading? I almost feel like a spy - being able to creep into other people's lives through their blogs, see the things they do, the things they care about, the emotions that they feel and why they feel them. Hopefully it doesn't seem creepy... more like curious..... No wonder "industry" has taken this blog thing and turned it into a complete marketing tool.

So in writing this I am making myself available for anyone who feels compelled to stop by and read... Hello.

How do you feel about reading this? Do you think you have gained any insight on the type of person I am or the things I think? The way we form opinions is interesting too - the whole thing is completely subjective and I refuse to ever believe that anything in life is objective. It's impossible. Maybe I will get into that another day.

They apparently blocked this now at work too - so I can't blog at work anymore. Oh well. It was fun for the 3 days it lasted.

Here is the official statement from Felicia Palmer, CEO of SOHH.com, about what happened:

As many of you are already aware, SOHH.com has been under attack by hackers this week. We noticed the first wave of attacks in our vBulletins forums and as of this morning the whole site was compromised.
It appears that hackers are specifically targeting Black, Hispanic, Asian and Jewish youth who ascribe to hip hop culture. Other websites, including AllHipHop and Da Piff forums, have also been compromised or threatened this week.

We are managing this situation on several fronts. We have taken down the server to patch the security breach and put in protections for future attacks. Also, as this is an international issue, it is being addressed by The FBI and the Strategic Alliance Cyber Crime Working Group.

We realize the hackers attacked SOHH.com because of our stature in the hip hop space and the people we serve. Unfortunately, we did a poor job of protecting SOHH.com from imminent threats from people who hate our community simply because of our racial and ethnic makeup.

This has brought to light our vulnerabilities and those of the internet publisher and users as a whole. What’s possible now is for us to join together to identify and eliminate this threat.
If you are under attack and have any information about these attacks please submit a report to the FBI cyber crimes unit here: https://complaint.ic3.gov/

The poor rick

"Babu, will you please give me two rupees more than your Rickshaw Bhada?"

The poor rickshaw puller innocently asked me on my way to Sheltar Chak from Barabati Bali Yatra (one of the traditional carnivals of Odissa) Maidan.

Before I could say a thing, he added, "I'm just requesting, don't give if you don't feel like".

I retorted back with irritation -- "but, you had agreed for Rs 6/- for the bhada, why two rupees more?"

He was mum for some time and then said "I'm falling short of Rs 2/-".

"From what?" I questioned him again threateningly...

"I'm falling short of Rs 2/- to buy a Milk Dabba for my 6 months old baby. I've collected Rs 38/- from my entire day's rickshaw pulling and it amounts to Rs 40/-".

I tried to open my mouth to say something. Before I could say anything, he stopped the rickshaw, looked back, saw my face and said, "no problem, I just requested you, if you don't want.. don't give, will wait for some more time and by God's grace I hope will be able to earn two more".

Then he started paddling towards my home. After a couple of minutes, he just said to himself (addressed to his kid), "By the time I collect two more, shops will be closed, and you (his kid) will have to sleep again in hunger tonight".

It was 11 pm at night in the month of November, quite late in the night for the eastern part of India. He was pulling me in his cycle rickshaw from the Bali Yatra Maidan to my brother's place at Cuttack. I was in my 12th standard at that time, studying at Ravenshaw College. I got late watching music and dance numbers in the famous Habib Melody on that evening. No one agreed to go with a fare of Rs 6/-, all the rickshaw-walas were charging Rs 10-12/-. I was bit surprised, when this one agreed for Rs 6/- after a moment's thought. May be he was a bit calculative at that time and thought of loosing the chance to earn Rs 6/- more, just to get that milk dabba home in time. Even though, he fell short of Rs 2/- he did not loose faith on his profession.

A 10-15 minutes journey by rickshaw from Barabti to Sheltar Chak. In the entire conversation, I was silent for most of the time, thinking about him, his 6 months old baby, me, my friends and the society. I was not that matured at that time to understand everything. During Bali yatra, I found some people throwing money on anything and buying trinkets indiscriminately. But, the same people would have gone to any extent to bargain with a poor rickshaw puller. I too had spent a lot from my pocket money on eating and watching melodies and operas. Whereas the rickshaw puller struggles to save Rs 40/- to feed his small kid (forget about himself and his other family members).

The value of Rs 2/- for him was the value of his kid's life, where as it had no meaning for some other people. Such is the denomination of money, some thing which has no value for someone might be a whole life for some body else.

Those two rupees ..... aamjunta think about it.

This is what they must be hiding at Big Blue with the shipping containers: a month of special events for the whole family (apart from the loved ones they've disconnected from). Clearly they do not want their members exposed to any dissenting views from the cult's critics *cough*anonymous*cough* before they can be made to sign over all their savings.

MTV News 27 June 2008
Hip-hop Web sites SOHH.com and AllHipHop.com were forced to temporarily suspen

MTV News 27 June 2008

Hip-hop Web sites SOHH.com and AllHipHop.com were forced to temporarily suspend access to their sites on Friday (June 27) after being targeted this week by an apparent hate group.

Both companies' sites were hacked, and instead of the usual hip-hop related news articles and feature stories, readers were shocked to find fake headlines and obviously photoshopped pictures saturated with racial slurs and other offensive terms; the hackers also stole personal information about employees of SOHH.com. A group or individual going by the name "Anonymous" has claimed responsibility.

SOHH was first infiltrated earlier this week on its forum pages and shut itself down on Friday; AllHipHop.com also had its forums compromised. AllHipHop was back up on Friday evening.

SOHH CEO Felicia Palmer, who was attacked with derogatory comments by the hackers, released a statement Friday saying that she and the company were working diligently to solve the problem and have been in contact with authorities.

"It appears that hackers are specifically targeting Black, Hispanic, Asian and Jewish youth who ascribe to hip-hop culture," the statement read. "Other websites, including AllHipHop and DatPiff[.com's] forums have also been compromised or threatened this week. ... Also, as this is an international issue, it is being addressed by the FBI and the Strategic Alliance Cyber Crime Working Group."

In a statement released late Friday afternoon, AllHipHop co-founders Chuck Creekmur and Greg Watkings said: "Urban culture and lifestyle has come under attack by a group of cyber terrorists. AllHipHop and SOHH, two pioneering Web sites that have been in the industry for over 10 years, are appalled by the unprovoked racist attacks of these cyber terrorists. With all the social strides that we have seen for several years, it is sad to see that this sort of blatant, hateful racism still exists in 2008 — a time of tremendous possibility. Together, AllHipHop and SOHH are committed to relentlessly pursuing these attackers, using every resource available, to ensure the capture of these criminals and prevention of repeat offenses."

SOHH and AllHipHop say they have joined forces to resolve the issue and have involved the proper authorities. Further comment is expected. Datpiff.com, which is dedicated to mixtapes, is still functioning as usual.
