The kiss has been in the B world for quite a long time. Starting clockwise from the extreme left at the top, we have Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia in Sagar, Anil Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia in Janbaaz, Vinod Khanna and Madhuri Dixit in Dayavaan and then Aamir Khan and Karishma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani, defining the evolution of the kiss story of the bollywood.

Review: Out and out comedy movie. This is a story rather comic turn of events about 3 men and the women in their lives. This is about the comic turn of events when the honest Anil Kapoor is suspected and the flirtatious Salman is revered by their betterhalfs'. A good entertaining movie with the right laughs.

I just finished watching Tashan, a movie I didn't really expect much from. A lot has been written about how it's an homage to the masala films of the 1970s, and it's often been unfavorably compared to Om Shanti Om---a film that fared much better with critics and audiences alike.

But this is the thing: Tashan has the heart and the soul of a 70s masala film. Ironically, what it lacks is the style of a 70s masala film. The key ingredients for Masala Goodness are in the characters: their emotions, motivations and relationships to one another. In other words, the story! The action is kept relatively simple until the end, when we get a satisfying showdown between the hero and the villain.

Tashan has an excellent story, which unfortunately is overshadowed (and ultimately almost derailed) by the slick special effects, violence, and sexy dance numbers. Here, the glamour and the action (car crashes, guns, explosions, acrobatics, jet skis) take center stage. The story---the friendship developing between polar opposites Jimmy and Bachchan Pande, the romance rekindled for Bachchan and Pooja, Pooja's need for vengeance---is relegated to the sidelines.

If the story had been put in the forefront, with far less of the "Look what we can do!" stuff, this could have been a really good film. That it isn't, I blame on the director (and probably the writer and the editor). The actors did their work superbly.

Saif Ali Khan is perfect as the arrogant English-speaking professional who gets in over his head and finds himself relying on those whom he would normally find unreliable.

Akshay Kumar---besides having the best entrance ever---is entirely believable as the uneducated thug from Kanpur who melts into a puddle when his love comes near, and who in the end has to choose between the blind loyalty of a lifetime and real new friendship.

Kareena steals the show as Pooja, a girl hell-bent on destruction---hers and Bhaiyyaji's---who finds a reason to look outside herself and to live, finally.

And Anil Kapoor as Bhaiyyaji is hilarious as he mangles the English language. He is a little caricatured---but then, the villain often is, in 70s masala movies.

As for the music, "Falak Tak" is an effective song because it moves the narrative along, and "Dil Dance Maare" is just oodles of fun. The lyrics made me giggle:

I could have lived without the other song picturizations though; they were self-conscious and unnecessary for the most part (although I understand that Kareena in a bikini is a big draw for some).

So the upshot is: I found myself moved by and invested in the characters and the story, but couldn't settle comfortably into it because of the endless and elaborate interruptions.

Another masala-perfect thing (probably accidental) was the occasional misspelled subtitle:

When I watch Tashan again, I'll fast-forward through most of it and try to just enjoy the plot. If only they had spent more of that precious time on the characters. Sigh.

If you thought Bollywood’s male heartthrobs looked hottest with their freshly scrubbed clean good

If you thought Bollywood’s male heartthrobs looked hottest with their freshly scrubbed clean good looks, think again. Mouches teamed with a hint of evening stubble is the look of the season. Ever since ShahRukh Khan flaunted his designer stubble in Chak De! India, there have been many stubbled followers -- Akshay Kumar, Kunal Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Himesh Reshammiya, Aashish Chowdry, Arshad Warsi, Suniel Shetty, Emraan Hashmi and Aftab Shivdasani. Even debutants like Sikandar (Woodstock Villa), Neil Nitin Mukesh (Johnny Gaddaar) and Adhyayan Suman (Haal-e-dil) seem to have adapted the bearded look. It seems the Hindi film fraternity now believes in reel life, men can turn heads when they look macho and not like a chocolate cream boy next-door. So, does that mean that the metrosexual look is out (at least in films) and we’ll have to make do with these ‘bearded’ superstars? Hairstylist Aalim Hakim believes that “the masculine look is in for now. Actors don’t have to look cute, men can look hot and sexy even with a stubble. Anil Kapoor tried the stubbled look years ago in Jaanbaaz and even now women swoon over a stubbled hero. I think a stubbled look oozes raw sex appeal.” Hakim has been the man who’s given the ‘bearded’ look to Vivek Oberoi, Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor in recent times. Agrees actor Aashish Chowdhry, who’s also sporting a stubble in a new film, “Actors are playing characters which makes them experiment with different looks. The bearded look is also ‘designed’ and I’d say it also defines the metrosexual man well.” Neil Nitin Mukesh feels men can look different only by trying out different haircuts and sporting a beard or a mouche. “Let’s face it, women like men to look macho. Times are changing and so are the genres of the movies. A bearded look also creates quite an impression on the audience. There is no harm in wearing a beard and going places in life,” he feels. Make-up artist Cory Walia feels that it is important to get the bearded look right. “The unshaved look was first introduced by art house actors who did it to give a serious look to the character. Today, a bearded look works well if you want either an Indian or an international look and is just right for casual and formal outfits as well,” says Walia. Actor, Aftab Shivdasani feels that “the trend is not new and a lot depends on the on-screen character one has to essay. The stubble is just the way of presenting a strong character.” And as long as the ‘bearded’ look continues to win hearts and make a fashion statement of its own, none of our Bollywood dreamboats are going to mind a trip to the latest stylist!

Anil Kapoor known to be one of the slimmest actors Bollywood has ever produced has now decided to make his daughter slimmer than ever before.

And he found an ingenious way of letting her know his slimming intentions. He got her a fat-free- sugarless cake on her birthday on Monday.

Known for her sweet tooth, Sonam caught on quickly. And got seriously worried.

"I thought I had slimmed enough. I lost 35 kgs before Saawariya. I've been constantly keeping my weight down. But I think Dad knows the other girls are looking very slim these. It was his way of letting me know that I needed to get even thinner. A strange present on my birthday."

With a string of illnesses in the family suddenly happening all at once Sonam Kapoor just didn't feel like celebrating her birthday.

"None of us was in the mood to party. Dad did get me a sugar-free cake and I blew out the candles in front of my family. But that's about it..There were too many illnesses and hospitalizations in the family."

But Dad Anil Kapoor did make a 'weighty' statement.

Sonam has caught on. "I'm going on a diet. I need to get thinner to look comparable with the other girls. Look at Deepika. She's athletic and slim. I'm not an athlete. But I'm a runner. I love to go on long runs all on my own for miles and miles. That is a sure way to lose weight."

But now with dad's prodding her into a fat-free awakening Sonam is about to lose more kilos.

"I have to. It's not a vanity. It's for my sanity. I can't be happy being healthy when the other girls are frantically losing weight. So thanks to my Dad I'm losing more weight."

And what else did Sonam do on her birthday? "Nothing. Saw a film and went to sleep early since I needed to look fresh the next morning to shoot for Delhi 6."

Drift stylista Joules returns by popular demand to line up the men on either side of her fashion fen

Drift stylista Joules returns by popular demand to line up the men on either side of her fashion fence

The Best

1. Shahrukh Khan
Right from his Fauji days this Delhiite has been stylish. While DDLJ made him a romantic heart throb, Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai elevated him to a style icon. The young Shahrukh wearing Gap and Abercrombie brought western wear to Bollywood men. Shahrukh's style has always created news whether it was his pink shirt with pink tie look in Don or his 6-pack abs in Om Shanti Om or his ponytail look at cricket games. However what makes Shahrukh stylish and sexy is his believe that he is the best, his wit, his hair and his self deprecating humor.

2. Hrithik Roshan
Hrithik catapulted into a style icon after his double role in his debut film. While Papa Roshan kept the first Hrithik simple it was his role as Rohit with his motor cycle, his designer clothes, glasses and his broken Hindi that girls swooned over. Hrithik's style is casual and an athletic body and his Greek god looks make him look stylish in whatever he wears. He took his style one step forward in Gowariker's period piece Jodhaa Akbar. Someone sitting behind me in the movie theatre commented "If this is how Jodhaa and Akbar looked, Jehangir must be the most beautiful mughal baby!" Advice to Hrithik: improve on how you communicate. I heard that Hrithik had a stutter growing up and he still is shy to speak in public.

3. Saif Ali Khan
The biggest transformation in Bollyheroes. Saif came to the bollywood stage by playing the bratty younger brother. His girlish look, nasally voice and limited acting talent almost made him a has-been actor . But with perseverance and taking up second lead roles he has slowly and steadily reached the top not only in his profession but also in style. Saif brought the metrosexual male to Bollywood and India. Gone were the hairy chested men and in was this suave, stylish, capris wearing Pataudi. Saif's style lately has been showy - perhaps the influence of a Ms. Kapoor.

4. John Abraham
Humility thy name is John Abraham. John's style is laid back. Just like his personality and unlike his girl friend his outfit choice are simple - blue jeans and t-shirts. But recently John has been dressing up a little more in fitted suits and his suit with no tie look at the Filmfare awards was well received. The most photographed of male models, John's assets are his physique, his smile and the way he wears his jeans. Whether in long hair or the recently cropped tresses John's style is confident and cool.

5. Amitabh Bachchan
Who can forget the blue shirt knotted at the waist in Deewar or the jacket flapping in the wind on a motorcycle in Muqaddar Ka Sikander. Amitabh has been stylish even when Bollywood did not know the "S" of style. His lanky body, smoldering eyes and booming voice were his assets as they are now. Amitabh's style these days is formal and it suits his age. He also sports a lot of stone rings and has a penchant for silk scarves. Advice to Amitabh: You have a beautiful family and a body of work that would make anyone jealous. Stop being *****y.

6. Neil Nitin Mukesh
A rare combination of cute looks and macho personality. Neil's outings have been rarely photographed as he is still a celebutant. But his outfit choice by Narendra Kumar Ahmed for Filmfare awards was simply spectacular for a new comer.

7. Bobby Deol
Bobby has this inherent style that he looks good and appropriately dressed at all times. I would call him the male Preity Zinta however his facial features restrict him from moving up in this list. Unlike the other pair of designer-designee Tina and Hussain, Bobby's wife Tanya is very good at selecting and designing his outfits. His suits are always tailored well and fitted and he mixes in colors well.

8. Karan Johar
Karan in an interview has claimed that young Hrithik Roshan's character in K3G of the portly kid was based on his own childhood. If that is the case he has come a long way. His style is elegant, black and tailored. What adds to his style is his easy going nature. Whether it is the Khan camp or the Bachchan camp, Karan is friendly with every one. A successful producer, a successful director and successful TV host were not enough caps for him. He turned into a dress designer for Shahrukh in KBC.

9. Kunal Kapoor
I wouldn't call Kunal a style icon but he has potential. A hot favorite on the ramp Kunal has walked the ramp for designers like Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna. Kunal's sculpted face and his intense eyes are his assets and lately he is trying to walk away from the grunge look as seen at the Filmfare awards (Loved the silver scarf with the black suit)

10. Kabir Bedi
This dapper sixty two year old has always been stylish. Whether Hollywood or Bollywood Kabir has always made his presence felt. His good looks and personality enhance his style. Kabir carries both traditional Indian wear and Western wear well. Lately he has been spotted in very stylish black suits which are fashionably tailored and seem to blend Indian wear with western wear.

Now The Worst

1. Govinda
Flamboyance is an understatement for this mumbaiya. Loud is his style but the truth is audiences don't expect anything less from Chi Chi. His style worked in his favor for the slap stick comedies he was doing in the earlier part of his career. Govinda does not care as is evident from his weight gain and the red pants with yellow shirts and the check jackets he still sports.

2. Salman Khan
The spoilt brat son of writer Salim Khan, Salman was the first Bollywood actor to take weight training seriously and bring the whole muscular look to Bollywood (and I thank him for that). However he overdoes everything. From taking his shirts off to show his chest and abs often, wearing tight shorts, tattered jeans, to sporting earrings in both his ears, to his long hair look in Tere Naam Salman's style is absurd. These days he has come up with a clothing line of T-shirts that feature his paintings.

3. Ranbir Kapoor
Actors who look like their mom's never have a good debut and have to struggle the earlier part of their careers (Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan). Ranbir reminds you so much of Neetu Singh that it is hard to consider him as an individual. On top of that Ranbir has a penchant for velvet jackets. His waiter style jacket for The Filmfare awards moved him a few notches lower in the style ladder.

4. Abhishek Bachchan
Abhishek yoyos between trying to be a copy of his dad and trying to make his own style. He seems to fail at both ends. His dress sense is conservative for his age (always wears suits and has a serious demeanor) on top of that the facial hair is getting boring. When he tries to be cool he out does himself as seen from the hair band look he was sporting a few months ago. He struggles with weight problems and in an industry obsessed with the size of the biceps stays away from the gym. Advice to Abhishek: You are a good actor, acting is your ticket to the top, stop trying to be cool.

5. Anil Kapoor
Loved the Anil Kapoor of Woh Saat Din and Chameli ki Shaadi. Anil was a hoot in Tezaab although a little hairy. Anil although dresses well, someone needs to tell him to get his chest waxed. Also a change in the hairstyle that he has been sporting since the 80s will help. Unlike Govinda who comes across as extremely humble, Anil is a blowhard which does not help his image either.

6. Aamir Khan
Our very own Tom Hanks, takes his look and role in movies very seriously. Whether it is the dhoti-bundi look in Lagaan or the long mustache look in Mangal Pandey or the shaved head for Ghajini, Aamir spends a lot of time and effort to get the right look for his character. Aamir's problem is once he gets in a character for a movie that is how he looks even when he is not on the sets.

7. Vivek Oberoi
What happened to the Vivek Oberoi of Company and Saathiya? A brilliant debut followed by a beautiful remake. We recently saw the same sparks in Shootout but along the way Vivek somehow lost his acting chops and his style. The half-unzipped leather jacket to show his chest, the floppy hair and the kaajal in the eyes needs to go. Like Abhishek, Vivek is not stylish and should concentrate on building his acting creds.

8. Akshay Kumar
Akshay entered the industry on his own merits. Handsome face, cute looks, a martial arts expert and some talent took him places. However these days Akshay's style is bordering on ridiculous. Not sure if it is the pressure for him to say young and fresh. His look in Bewafaa where he was trying to be a musician made me laugh. His look at the SRGMP finale and Filmfare awards (suit jacket with no shirt) makes you wonder how he left home looking like that, specially when his wife and mother-in-law always look gorgeous.

9. Himesh Reshamiya
Yes, we know the masses love you but its not for your style. People like you because they can laugh at you and not with you. He has finally realized the topi look needs to go but Himesh please say bye-bye to the girly jeans. And what's up with the open chest look? When did Bollywood stars start thinking showing their chest in the name of fashion was Ok?

I m ishpeaking english fully, sahi galat ko maro goli, I m vearing a suit tan-a-tan, underwear iz

I m ishpeaking english fully, sahi galat ko maro goli, I m vearing a suit tan-a-tan, underwear iz phir bi Indian - I m villian of old tradision, this my dear phellow IZ MY TASHAN - Bhaiyaji (Anil Kapoor) in Tashan

Faarsht impresshion IZ da laasht impresshion - Bhaiyaji (Anil Kapoor) in Tashan

Tashan was an eye opener for me.Tashan was a movie which made me think.I am never worried or ever judge a movie in terms of the financial profit it squeezes out in the box office from the poor Indian man's pocket.I consider a film a to be a success only when it makes me think. Now over the past month I have come across a good number of thought provoking movies.I have seen the bollywood adaptation of Stephen King's Cats eye in No Smoking-in a sense it has been much better if you ask me.The movie makes you think in so many ways thats its really intersting.I loved the movie.I also saw Pan's Labyrinth-a masterpiece in its own sense.Ignoring the blood and gore and the toture which reminded me of Hostel, the concept and the flow puts a lot of things in perspective.I have seen I am legend.Considering the alternate ending in the unrated edition , it successfully drew a lot of parallelism.I saw some more and if I start describing them then this post will be more about my provoked thoughts than Hairy Kapoors Moobs ( Man Boobs = Moobs ) and the dancing godess of unhealthy anorexia-Kareena.So does Tashan measure up to the list given above? read on to know that.

Okay so since you decided to click on the link and read the rest.Let me tell you,I lied.I bloody goddamn lied when I started comparing Tashan to all those great works of art.Tashan is a waste.Tashan is an aged piece of navel lint that accumulates when you masturbate on granny porn and do not bath for a month.Tashan is a movie made in Mumbai about dehati mafia in UP.Tashan is a living testament of teenage puppy love(thankfully no beastality involved).Tashan is about some call center jock who is confused about what his role is in this entire movie.Tashan is about so many such things that never ever make it into a great movie.Ram gopal verma is unfortunate. If he had released his Aag after tashan then may be it wouldn't have been branded the worst movie of all time and he'd have saved his ass being banged royally by the press and the critics.I think a pre-production version of this movie was really responsible for the recent anti north indian seniment in Mumbai. This is not a work of art. This is a work of f-art !

Now Yash Chopra might come back saying that he has glorified the Indian Rickshaw puller in this movie.Which is true.So this movie is about the common man. This movie is about the regular bread earner puller who in the scorching summer sun take out his Rickshaw and earn enough after a hard day to pay for Tashan's ticket in PVR.So after the usual boy meets girl and then a sudden twist in the story we have the eternal thumb-filliac Akshay Kumar logging in as Ravan on a scooter and taking up the role of Bacchan Pandey later. And right by that time it was becoming increasingly clear that I have to change my perspective and expectations from the film.So in my eternal quest to give a fair and critical judgement,I reset my expectation from a RACE like racy movie to a village edition of threesome but alas I was dsiappointed soon after as well. The no-nonsense prospect of threesome transformed into an all nonsense catastrophe of flying Rickshaws and Jiglling Man-boobs generously visible through an indian version of a full body male edition fishnet. So after a lot of human bodies fell,Kareena put an end to my sensory misery by copying the role of Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and pasting it in a scene of pithing and killing Anil Kapoor on his Rickshaw thereby giving birth to the notority called Kill Anil.I am sure this is what Yash Chopra is going to make next with Kareena reprising her role as the anorexic grasshopper.

Beyond the disaster dished out as the final release I really appreciated the way Akshay Kumar pulled his act together and that is the only take home from the entire debacle.Akshay is maturing by the day,no wonder he is one of the highest grossing actors these days.Saif totally disappointed me.A 40 year old call centre jock ? Give it a break. To add to it I didn't find the serpentile CEO Ranvir from Race or ever terrifying Langda Tyagi from Omkara. The entire maturity he had gained over all these years has been nullified with this single film.Compare this film to any of his starter films and you'd know why.Kareena, from the beauty to the anorexic chiselled nightmare trying in vain to be the deshi edition of Kill-Bill minus the the glamour of Uma Thurman, hollywood class effects and of course the gore of Quentin Tarantino.I lost all my hopes,Akshay lost his good work,Yash Raj banner lost crores of rupees but Saif is the only one who gained something from this movie-Kareena Kapoor.

When you watch ads like Thums Up or Mountain Dew…you know that this is not possible.. this is

When you watch ads like Thums Up or Mountain Dew...you know that this is not possible.. this is exaggeration. But you buy it for those 30 sec....because it ends in 30 sec. You take it casually. If you want to show that type of action in a full length film, you have to create that type of background. Only then viewer will buy it. Otherwise it will be called Tashan!

Only one line was running through my mind while watching the movie...'What the hell is that supposed to mean??' Those who REALLY want to know about the non existent story can go here

Only 1 point about the action..why was it there?? I will tell you about only a couple of action scenes. I think they will convince you not to waste your money, energy, fuel, electricity and time in watching this movie.

Scene 1: Somewhere in Rajasthan

About 23-25 policemen confront Akshay, Kareena, Anil and Saif who are hiding behind some pillars. Upon entering the camera frame...the police start shooting these people like they are infected with T-Virus. Why?? Why do you want to kill them so badly, Mr Cop?? How about "Hands up!" or "Dont move!"...follow the standard procedures! Now something get into Akshay and he comes out running towards nothing in particular. Policemen must have been mislead by their commander... he must have told them that people die if you shoot 2 ft away from their feet. None of the 25 cops seem to aim correctly at Akshay who is running in front of them, then towards them and finally kick boxing with them! On top of that Anil and Kareena do the same! 3 people kill an entire police battalion. You have seen these kind of scenes before...but you simply cannot buy it in Tashan.

Scene 2: Climax

Same disgusting stuff from scene 1...but one shot tops it all. Anil is using a water jet from a hose to push Kareena off a bridge.. That seems to have created some sort of water canal. Then he remembers 'Damn it..I have a gun!' Just as he points the gun at Kareena, Saif finds a motor boat and comes to rescue her through that canal. Just when I started to think 'Could this get any sillier??', he does a somersault with it and pushes Anil off the bridge.

Some irritating things (in the movie..other than the movie itself)-

1) Anil Kapoor trying to speak english. Horrible, pathetic, ridiculous! Not a single line that you can bear!

2) Songs and their great lyrics. 'Dil Dance mare'?? What is that??? (Why god, why? Why are you doing this??)

I cant believe I am saying this..but Race was much better! If you dont like Kareena..there is nothing in this movie for you.

If you still want to waste your time...see the climax

Took a day off from work today cause I was feeling a little under the weather, so decided to watch some of the movies that have been lying unwatched, top of the list came “Race” a multi starrer that features Saif Ali,Akshaye Khanna,Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif,Anil Kapoor and Sameera Reddy.

The premise is simple, boy meets girl and gives her to his brother, cause the brother is a wanker who can’t get a girl on his own, so far so good, but after that the directors decided to deviate from the tried and tested formula perfected by Karan Johar and try to introduce some hollywoodesque twists and turns in the movie (we’ll revisit this later)

For now lets move onto the characters, I’ll decline wasting time on the minor actors in this movie like Saif,Akshaye,Bipasha and Katrina, you might be mislead into thinking that they are the stars of this movie but you’d be wrong, the real star by far is Anil Kapoor playing a big screen version of carrot chewing Karamchand on speed, only he carries it to heights that the original could only dream of,while Karamchand preferred the humble carrot from the vegetable family,Anil Kapoor (A.K.) practically makes love to every conceivable fruit he can lay his paws on,take a view of this:

Yes people that’s an apple in his hands

He walks with a big cane....sugar cane that is

During the course of the movie he also starts hitting on the Sameera Reddy character who plays his “Dumb Blonde” sidekick:

Man does not live on fruit alone

(co incidentally isn’t Sonam Kapoor,Anil Kapoor`s daughter, old enough to be Sameera Reddy`s sister?)

But then the director wasn’t really sure about the comic value of these shenanigans, so they fell back on the tried and tested (some cruel souls would say tired and wasted) hamming of Johnny Lever:

Well they were wrong to think any rescuing was needed,Anil Kapoor gave a performance that could give Dharam Paaji nightmares (see Johnny who ) ,well not really,AK has a ways to go before he can scale the peaks (not Sameera Reddy`s) that Dharamji has.

Getting back to the twists in the tale, the producers of this movie seem to have decided to err on the side of more, the story had so many twists and turns in the plot that at the end I was a little dizzy and quiet a bit nauseous. The ending was so twisted that when it came it wasn`t really surprising any more (By the way, look out for the “Fast and the Furious:Tokyo Drift” -Meets “Speed” car chase sequence)

Final Thoughts: See this movie if you are completely bored and wanna kill…nay massacre, some time, just remember to carry the motion sickness pills.

Starring Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan

Starring Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan
Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya
Rating: ** ½

The threesome on the way to god-knows-where need to escape from the cops. They get into blonde wigs and tight 'American' costumes and turn into item dancers for a Hollywood project called Holy Widows.

Holy shit! Tashan is so full of the milk of human zaniness that you feel it may at any moment topple over under the weight of its own cleverness.

If the bizarre brew of the cunning and the cool holds togther it's mainly because of Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor who a create a kaleidoscopic chemistry of crime and no punishment.

There's an ingrained energy in the proceedings, a ravishing rush of adrenaline and a whoosh of wunder-winks as though the man at the helm has a secret chuckle and a closet giggle underscoring every exaggerated swagger and every italicized moment in this story of four seemingly unscrupulous gold-diggers.

Three of them redeem themselves by the end of the film. As for the fourth, the villain played with feverish flatulent flamboyance by Anil Kapoor, you can't win 'em all.

Tashan is a winner in unexpected ways. First-time director Vijay Krishna Acharya spears the content to a dashboard that dashes all over the place.

Most of Tashan is a zany kookie ribald and riveting road movie about a naïve wannabe criminal Bachchan Pandey (Akshay Kumar), an English tutor named…er, Jimmy Cliff (Saif) trapped into a heist by a crimelord who wants to learn angrezi in haste, and an amoral pouty super-sculpted seductress Pooja (Kareena) who plays up the two men against one another and often breaks into steamy songs and provocative dances that suggest no link between the tale of the UP bhayya, angrezi masterji and the kanpuri coquette and the world that cultivates such freaked-out misfits.

Crime capers and road movies about characters who often get into outlandish costumes and foreign wigs at laconic locales have become a favourite at Yashraj.

Stories of small towners dreaming big have come and grown. Bunty Aur Babli worked. Jhoom Barabaar Jhoom did not. Tashan surreptitiously slips into the workable stratosphere, thanks to its super-motorized manoeuvres that take the plot into an area of utter originality.

Love or loath it, you've never seen a Hindi film like Tashan before.

Outrageous, over-the-top, opulent and audacious the debutant director turns formulistic conventions inside-out upside-down.

He pummels and tramples on the age-old material and emerges with images imprints and insignia that remind us that the global cinematic journey from Manmohan Desai and David Dhawan to Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone has come a full circle.

Tashan constructs a fool's paradise of caper- wanderers in search of that pot of gold at the end of the studio-generated rainbow.

The splash of colours (art director Sukant Panigrahy and DOP Anaynanka Bose have as much fun with the art décor and locations as two kids doing water colour in kindergarten) and the swirl of delightfully and daring caper-adventures as the greasy characters travel across Greece and Hindustan in search of anything but peace, is quite a gravity-challenging achievement.

The actors seem to be having loads of fun. Whether we share it or not, is entirely our look-out. If the truth be told the only one who seems to catch hold of the director's sur in totality is Akshay Kumar.

I'm not very sure why Kareena needed to re-sculpt her body to play the small-time schemer (was she playing Babli in search of a Bunty?) or the relevance of Saif Ali Khan's dropping moustache (is he a secret member of Ming dynasty?).

In fact Saif's relevance to the film escapes me. He rushes in as though to work over-time after Race.

He seems to have no idea of the rhythm and sur required for this extravagant take-off on Big Bad Bollywood's meanest conventions, and his set-expressions are more annoying than illuminating.

Anil Kapoor's Bhaiyyaji with his craving to master English is a monstrous aberration from the past. A mogambo from the stylized den in Mr India let loose in the city of the prowl to create a free-funded havoc.

Akshay steals the show in almost every frame.

Watch him in that tricky boat sequence with Kareena in Allahabad (yes we're taken from Uttar Pradesh to Greece to Rajasthan to Leh in this jerky joyride from hear to eternity-gritty) where he gets to know she's is his teenaged sweetheart from the town that was as frozen as the lakes of Leh and Greece.

Akshay takes this potentially trite and dangerously co-incidental sequence from level to level with a fluency that speaks volumes for his growth as an actor and his reverence for cinematic conventions.

You wish the director Vijay Krishna Acharya had shown some restrain in the action scenes.

The trouble is Tashan doesn't know where to stop. The situations get out of hand and dialogues like chadhi-sukhana and aurat ki ganji make you wince with their wonky witticism.

You can't blame Acharya for losing control. After a few reels of non-stop amorality the narration acquires its own volition.

It's the madness of the moment capturing the awkward avarice of a generation that believes money makes the world go round….or is it wrong?.... that echoes the perverse passion-play of Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers.

Expertly assembled and skilfully knitted together the episodes hold together mainly because the warm sunshine of the outdoors complements the bronzed and over-baked ambitions of the characters.

Sometimes the stench of immorality gets overbearing. That's when Kareena's overpowering beauty comes in. She's partly Meryl Streep, partly Juliette Binoche.

What the film is, becomes harder to pinpoint. Just go with the four.
