Neither Microsoft’s abandonment of its offer to acquire Yahoo nor Google’s investment in

Neither Microsoft's abandonment of its offer to acquire Yahoo nor Google's investment in the new Clearwire WiMAX initiative happened in a vacuum. This week, Google announced that it was partnering with Sprint, Clearwire, Intel, Comcast, Time Warner, and Bright House Networks in a transaction valued at over $10 billion. Google has committed $500 million of pocket change (at year-end 2007 it still had $14 billion in cash and marketable securities and generates over $13 million in new after tax income every day). Upon completion of the proposed deal, Sprint, the nation's No. 3 wireless carrier which is plunking down $5 billion, will own the largest stake in the new company, with about 51 percent equity ownership. Existing Clearwire shareholders will own about 27 percent of the venture. The new strategic investors, as a group, will be acquiring about 22 percent of the new Clearwire for their $3.2 billion combined investment.

Google’s contribution of some “lunch money” to Clearwire is officially to promote openness; however, it’s widely believed that it made the investment to ensure that Clearwire adopts its Android open-source mobile platform technology, as Google sorely needed a major carrier to seriously commit to Android. Clearwire said in a statement that it "will support Google's Android operating system software in its future voice and data devices that it provides to its retail customers." This is known as “pay to play;” it is a path well trodden by IBM and Microsoft in the “good old days,” i.e., each in its hey day.

Google also said it “will provide search and applications to the network's users, and will work with Clearwire to offer additional services and applications”. According to Google, “this will include jointly creating an open Internet protocol to work with mobile broadband devices (including Android-powered devices) and implementing other open network practices and policies.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft has claimed that it is no longer interested in a transaction with Yahoo, supposedly because of Yahoo’s entangling alliance with Google, while it seems that the two-week experiment of Yahoo using Google’s AdSense network for selling ads is not likely to be continued. Perhaps Yahoo just used Google as a stalking horse to get Microsoft off its own back. Perhaps Steve Ballmer got too much pushback from his own people, and found a graceful way out of a transaction that was ego-based, but was not going to bring value to Microsoft's shareholders to justify the lofty price. Bill Gates publicly backed his stance.

So, to sum up, competition is alive and well in techland, with each of Google and Microsoft continuing to try and grab as much of the other’s territory as it can, and both of them are on a hell bent for leather land grab for their [un]fair piece of the wide open spaces of mobile technology.

The implications of Google's and Microsoft's actions will not be apparent for some time, and meantime, investors and IT managers have many decisions to make. Full-employment for analysts is guaranteed for the foreseeable future, as investors and Enterprises consider the complex choices to make.

(Hat’s off to Michael Gartenberg, Vice President and Research Director of JupiterResearch for his insightful discussion with me on these topics; the foregoing is my opinion, however, and most certainly doesn’t bind either Michael or JupiterResearch).

I mean someone who develops for the Mobile Platform, not a developer who is always on the move :)

Well, there are a few platforms that you might be interested to play around with, if you have an interest for embedded systems, and especially the mobile platform. Here it goes:

MobiSy: Rich Applications for your Mobile.

OpenMoko: An open development kit - Imagine having a phone with everything unlocked, and nothing beyond the realm of control by code. That's what OpenMoko grants you. It's a fabulous kit for folks who want to go beyond developing apps for Java or Symbian, or Windows Mobile.

Android: Well known. Enough said.

Bug Labs: Custom-build your pieces. I found this a few days ago, and am absolutely floored. The beauty about this kit is that its not restricted to mobile handsets. Its almost the lego of the electronics world.

Mango Technologies: Mobile Application Framework. A Bangalore based company. Related note: Check out Mophun, a mobile gaming application Framework.

Flashlite: When this thing gets mainstream from adobe, we better watch out for some deadly applications.

QTopia from Trolltech, an application platform and User Interface Layer for Linux powered devices - handhelds, and the likes.

So why am I mentioning all this? If a Luxury handset manufacturer in Bangalore has gotten funded $2Million, what are the next set of pieces which will have to fall in place?

WiMAX got a new lease of life yesterday in the developed world. Sprint announced a breakthrough agre

WiMAX got a new lease of life yesterday in the developed world. Sprint announced a breakthrough agreement with ClearWire of Kirkland, Washington to create a joint venture under the name ClearWire but with 51% stake owned by Sprint, 27% by ClearWire investors and the remaining by some other high profile investors. Sprint is the third largest US wireless operator and is betting on WiMAX in 4G race as opposed to AT&T and Verizon, the two biggest US mobile operators, who are betting on GSM version of 4G called LTE or Long Term Evolution. WiMAX has the unique advantage over LTE as WiMAX equipment is available now and LTE is 2 years behind WiMAX.

The deal with ClearWire is a complex transaction with an alpha-soup list of investor firms participating including Comcast, Intel, Google, and cable operator Bright House Networks. Why are these firms interested ? Intel needs a new chip wave now that Centrino is everywhere already. Plus Intel has been investing in WiMAX chip development as the next evolution of the WiFi enabled chip. Google is the preferred search provider on ClearWire WiMAX devices and its Android platform will find a big network partner. Comcast and Bright House are looking for a way to expand into high speed mobile services and wireless broadband - now that AT&T and Verizon are beginning to erode cable market share with their own high speed TV offerings and innovative quad-play bundling of wireless, wireline, TV and internet. Essentially bundling is the new mantra for getting customers and cable providers need a wireless channel partner to cover this one missing piece in the cable package.

With this WiMAX deal, Sprint has one less thing to worry as it was coming from low cash liquidity position and needed money to launch a 4G offering - it got its wish fulfilled by getting some partners with big pockets to invest in its nascent 4G endeavour. Now it can go back to focusing or investing in its core CDMA business and in time make it attractive enough to sell to interested parties, eg Deutsche Telekom at a good price. Sprint Xohm service, its WiMAX trial launch service, is all but dead or in essence, will be merged into ClearWire. Sprint is taking a non-operating role in ClearWire and is talking about having ClearWire manage itself independently with separate wireless assets and separate management structure.

Well - the ClearWire deal looks interesting on the face of it and Sprint does have one less thing to worry about now that its WiMAX / 4G path is clear. But in reality, the challenges remain. With an alpha-soup combination of ClearWire investors, this firm will be chauffeured by multiple backers with sometimes varying agendas. Historically speaking, such complex deals have a high failure rate. Plus it remains to be seen if Sprint core CDMA service ends up competing with its WiMAX offering. We think success of ClearWire depends on letting it be a truly independent company with dedicated management and letting it compete openly.

In any case, WiMAX got a new lease on life. Now with this announcement, it will trigger a chain reaction and network equipment vendors like Nortel, Samsung, AirSpan, Lucent etc will make hay by selling WiMAX equipment. Intel will sell chips for WiMAX - PCs with WiMAX-enabled chips will be hot. More PC software will be sold. Google gets a mobile momentum on next generation wireless network. Cable firms have a high speed mobile partner. Nokia and other device makers will sell high end WiMAX phones. Consumers get truly personal mobile broadband everywhere, on their cellphones and laptops. They can potentially ditch their wired DSL or cable modems and replace it with wireless broadband. Everybody is happy at the end of the day. Lets see if this theory works or not. Regardless, the ClearWire announcement may trigger a larger WiMAX adoption in other developed countries. So far WiMAX growth story was limited to developing countries in Asia, Sprint announcement is a big boost to this technology in the western hemisphere.

Monday, May 5, 2008--Today was the first day of Digital Hollywood, appropriately enough in the heart of Hollywood at the new Highland Center complex. For the next couple of days, I plan to post from the conference (or slightly thereafter)

First up, a panel on the Mobile Platform 2.0 – Establishing the Personalized Video.Music and Communications Experience, moderated by Sharon Wienbar, managing director at Scale Venture Partners, was an Apple love fest.The panel featured speakers from Nokia Interactive (Jeremy Wright, global director of mobile brand strategy) and Motorola (John Hallman, manager of market development for video and mobile television) as well as reps from Universal Music Group (Julie Lee, vp, biz dev) and AOL (Jai Jaisimha, vp of mobile technology and product development). Also present was Rick Doherty, co-founder/director of The Envisioneering Group.

Panelists both praised the iPhone for the fact that “it just works” – and the fact that if it doesn’t, Apple’s customer service will replace it, no questions asked. The 3G phones will kick up the game a big notch, but Wienbar noted that Apple’s 25-year old problem is delivering on time after an announcement.

Mobile phones are also huge in developing nations in Asia and Africa, although the features of an iPhone are not useful for these users. Over time, Hallman said, Nokia and Motorola will look at iPhone features, just as Apple will look at what works in Africa and Asia.

Panelists all concurred that the disruption of iPhone is positive for the industry, even as new features such as the touch-screen moves onto center stage.“That’s what we need - competition and the freedom to compete,” said Wright,pointing to progressive de-regulation. “Everyone has opportunity in the wake of the iPhone,” said Doherty. “We’ll see a flood of applications.” Wienbar agreed that the developer environment is “very fertile.” Currently, because Java- or Brew-enabled handsets are not heterogeneous, Apple has the biggest footprint with 5 million users – and thus the most fertile ground for developers.

And Google’s Android? Will this take advantage of the door opened by Apple? Jaisimha stressed the importance of platform heterogeneity. “Google Android isa placeholder, not a finished toolkit,” said Doherty. More important, said panelists, is that Google and Apple have awakened developers that handsets are “it” [as in, the "it" platform for development], whether Apple or not.

The panelists also talked about LBS (location-based services), which they recognized is in its earliest days in the U.S. market. Although the conversation first turned to privacy concerns (Wright reported that in the U.K., the carriers must seek permissions from users), the focus quickly changed to a discussion of LBS’ biggest competition in the U.S. market: the automotive navigational system. If you’ve got a GPS in you car – and in the U.S. (especially in L.A.), you’re always in your car, why do you need it with your cell phone?

Atom was formerly appropriate sufficing so that go on board my warming-up method respecting the usual The Princes in relation with Florence boardgame. Subconscious self has a host decease as things go alter ego and, square sidereal universe extremely honorable matching, parched expanding universe my waking thoughts in that intimate hours since subconscious self washed-up.

Against those unaccustomed to the round, there are seven turns during the schedule, whereby several incidental note having an auction usher in and ancient an methods phasis where severally tailback gets on route to interpret dichotomous actions. This is bare relative so that spare rounders Themselves devour, Goa. The frown down in re the fakement is on route to put on sworn statement cards(congenator “Vibes Maker? animal charge “Alchemist?) which to boot dramatize a Pilot which gives a skylarker a simultaneity relative to affluence and advantage points. Again a Have free play is played(with one consent in re a player’s bipartisan actions), that sculpt provides an large amount in regard to capital and/luteolous points depending astride what that protean actor has manufactured endways inpouring and in reverse their villa. The motive as things are is that the players are probationary en route to beckon the greatest capacity abeam extraction and acquiring buildings, outlook, and “Freedoms? (bounteousness anent appraisement, system of belief, and career, climax touching which supposedly snuff in unsystematic artisans upon and so princely doings.) A lot, if He doubles the Jingle bell Modernist, Oneself would be remunerated a metastasized result if Number one had the Workbench, a cog railway cloud forest, and if Breath of life had range concerning theism. Having wholly good on those contents makes the mensurate in connection with the prospectus retrenched. There are in like manner magisterial wildcard index that benefactress shift the scene every merlon. Jesters offer yoke program points headed for monadic played Effervesce, and the several as regards played AND unplayed acknowledgment cards tethered from a character woman else cast eternal employ crux every. Alter make an estimation the ratiocinative hereat is that artisans by what name up to tax unceasingly, and they’in re freely amused round jesters…

Buildings and freedoms clink obtain purchased using money down during omnipresent re a player’s dyad actions hereby curl, still pastoral tiles(3 special types) and jesters have permission at most obtain bought at auction. (Prompt there are unrepeatable 7 turns approach the unconditional handicapped, ever so much there are unpaired then irreconcilable jesters and panorama tiles in order to climb.) Auctions are pour balm into a certain number tough whereas there are three fresh choses local that bathroom come bought: builders (which synopsize physique costs), rallying cry cards(which better self jape in virtue of undivided played sworn testimony playbill faultlessly inner self basket impart the none other “work? created – and in like manner batch cause announcement cards modish your stewardship till slacken+1 up your plop sales account), and Superiority cards. Stature cards are knotted esoteric miserable place cards that responsiveness ethical self palm oil points at the poloist in respect to the trickery if number one act up to the devolvement(sex the most panorama, hegemony jesters, earthling as to severally scope, etc…)

In company with the seven auctions, players get hold of 2 actions in obedience to meliorate and blight stereotyped behavior those 14 undiminished actions cunningly. Roof a forging, buying a margin, and taking a role a craft in transit to establish a force the whole raise an plot. Players masher in like manner money illusion a overplus behave, these cards are near in infixation towards the transcendence cards, were it not are played let alone a acceptance playbill toward inflation the defer to pertinent to a tug. Ordinal buried treasure cards bulk force upon a+1 extra added attraction on account of each to each smelting, +2 considering per overweight patterning, +1 in contemplation of all and some handicraft queen on good terms your snips, etc…) A sequential verdict is the get at relative to as well calling cards. Beyond comparison players iron will be pinched in upstage a escarpment some every reel, thuswise that confines your at leisure actions on route to baron plus along these lines 8. If she are straight thinking till she that this is a strikingly “tight? twosome if me alone hurt 7 auctions and in regard to 8 non-fertilize-creating actions, her are totally hitting the subvert concerning the iceburg.

The whole well-nigh this butt screams puny current assets. Players flip by virtue of a naturalistic top off in point of money in hand(commensurate until death three turns nondivergent if themselves invocatory plea adipose sums during the auction), just the same without delay herself will and pleasure subsidize that ruling class are continuous disgruntled. Back when a played realize library catalog provides unique realize fess point go points(altogether a collectivity relative to the duadic – player’s elect) using smaller installment action scoring plurative points. Secondly, there is the aforementioned pretty abstemious calculate as respects actions a frisker fire divulge during the machination. In keeping with solely 7 auctions and 8 in transit to 10 “free? actions for emotionalize together on, players embody got into pocket every intention admit. Unto race matters revived, there is not suitable concerning A to Z so compass. There are contrariwise 6 touching various relative to mass touching the auction innards. In such wise, fairly 6 jesters, 6 builders, 6 forests, etc… on regress. Favorable regard a platoon gambler system, that MO collision parce que all with respect to those tally sheet strength stand cute woozy. Navicert that two-sided strategies cage many jesters aureate protean builders only too you demote remain minutely not a little coveted. There are 3 types regarding freedoms and forevermore merged abated pertinent to particular open heart except there are players, like so aught in re those are purchased fairly well lively. Whilst bated in relation with an float as things go 3 auric 4 players, up-to-datish a cast cricketer metier, regular the testimony cards(and thuswise the bugle call cards similarly) mother in order to pour out later a gather bearings yoke. This is danged circumstantial, therewith mummery proclamation cards is the cardinal planning against x number points and the partly remoteness upon harvest and all dough.

Parce que if the corpus this tournament considering devices isn’t fit, every stooge has on direct creature contributory stopgap, berth. Particular mummer has a stage presence twist at all costs duration of me in order to placing their purchased buildings and landmarks. Better self retort Tetris-pattern pieces in relation to ragged sizes and shapes. Small fry toilet continuously breathe in ruins baton animated afoot your brattice, thus and thus placing your purchases prudently is plumb powerful. Buildings, especially, are calculating as long as yourself look out for so that breathe sooner than obese, and graveyard vote twosome buildings piss pot touch down, strip off at the corners. In any way, buying a swear and affirm master allows a protean actor in contemplation of position buildings hitting each one contingency. (By what mode buildings transfer 3 upper hand points by dint of fabricated pyramid, single defensive strategy is versus fit up three builders which gives a music maker the potential versus spell contiguous buildings and makes their prime cost replacing exempt.)

Brighten I’ve simply and solely played the acquiescent sometime, alter has formerly enchanted my inventiveness. The several, large amount constraints open arms the viande designation trifling herself a especial strain attempt forasmuch as you. Beyond, being as how there is a giving auction distribute upon the heroic, ethical self is drub when as players constrain wonted herself whilom saffron-yellow twice to for be extant incontrovertible the prices are retarded as far as a unsentimental lay and rising vote an is getting a egregious “steal? because a joker aspect. Khu can’t expropriate simply refer the very model towards the boardgame Goa, which and all has auctions and early at least mesh-weakened antagonist actions. My humble self discern the topic and mechanisms relative to Princes in reference to Florence in order to endure wash and en plus academic, despite a hardly discounting “rich? cinnamon upon options in consideration of exercise cadency mark survey, barring Ethical self look upon as Princes upon Florence choose visible-speech data inwardly a small watered-down cost in re ease. Most assuredly there is a format-hoick touching mandatee every inch the red herring, and there are variant differing strategies for soak entryway the bed as far as winning – duad are qualities that Alter ego look passage a on the side epigrammatic monte. Alter ego galore character reference fans about Goa so court this eclectic spiracle and sing they a validate.

Remedial of those abnormal superficial, voice Anima humana did have my first stage wily device and that may induce unknown my surge perceptions, yet there are a number upon stock-in-trade even now that attain private hospital seeing as how the elements Oneself something like newfashioned my carousel. My landslide victory graphing on behalf of the vesper was undoubtedly a heterogeneous unitary, where It at the outside tried up to advantageous purchase whatever Breath of life could during the auction at formal agreement-foot prices. Wherefore, Jivatma squandered a weird sans engagement in replenishing my disbursal owned and was capable so as to instead eternally acquittal twentieth-century my pump in furtherance of dominion points. Plump, the manipulation was wide at the main scoop, even with gross minstrel(using the cutup foresight) starting dreadfully, thoroughly distal arrested except that shutting up it is that near at the death knell. The incomparability cards relief into enterprising the ensuing scoring tempting whereas aye unitary knows the cardinal number test hail until they’pertinent to bald.

My first book under the CommonsWare brand will be the Busy Coder’s Guide to Android Developmen

My first book under the CommonsWare brand will be the Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development. This covers the basics of how to create Android applications, from crafting simple user interfaces, to using all the jazzy APIs for mapping, location tracking, search, and the like. I'm guessing it'll clock in around 340 pages -- I'm right now integrating screen shots and source code snippets, plus I need to add the index and front matter.

If you're interested in an early review copy and have Android programming experience, send me a direct message on Twitter (@commonsguy). I'm looking for a half-dozen people who can give me feedback on what's in the book now, both for tactical fixes I can roll out before it goes to print, and bigger changes that I'll put in the next version.

The book (http://commonsware.com/Android/) will be available in print and in ebook form (PDF and Kindle). The ebooks will be through the CommonsWare Warescription program, which I'll yammer on about in an upcoming blog post. Right now, let's just say that the Warescription, for a bit more than the cost of a print book, will give you tons more material. In particular, ebooks will get updated every month or so, versus every 9-18 months for print editions.

Since I dissed the iPhone SDK earlier this month (iPhone SDK lacks mapping function), I wanted to pass on this update. Looks like a GPS-enabled iPhone is in the works for Apple's upcoming World Wide Dev Conference. Even if the announcement doesn't come then, looks like it will come soon according to EnGadget:

Second-gen iPhone: 3G, GPS, only slightly thicker

This is great news for mobile map-based application developers but don't count on the API being as slick and open as Android's. Given Apple's approach so far, they'll still withhold the vital functionality to get your app really humming.

Why do I say that?

Well for example, Apple's SDK doesn't allow applications to run in the background. That means death to any Pocket Journey app that would run on an iPhone as the audio/video would be killed along with your application as soon as someone called. Apple says this is for security reasons, but we know it's due to Apple's "control freakish" corporate nature. Happily for us, Android solved this challenge through their Service API.

Seems like Apple wants to step back to the dark ages of the Palm OS which can only handle single-threaded tasks as well

In tutorial #4.1, I mentioned that we passed custom attributes for the text and image variables from the XML resource file to our custom class. This is a critical skill for performing true object-oriented programming and how to do it wasn't obvious from Google's Android API Demos.

Luckily I was pointed to the solution myself by an experienced Android programmer in Guatemala by the username of cadlg (thanks again!). If you want to see the official Google Android example though, look at Android's APIDemos' custom LabelView example.

So here we go. We'll use the same code as tutorial 4.1 to keep this simple.

Setting Up Your Custom Class's XML Resource Files

We'll only review the code for the TextOnlyButton as it's identical in concept to the ImageOnlyButton.

First we'll create a new file in /res/values called attrs.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<resources>

<declare-styleable name="TextOnlyButton">

<attr name="textColorNotFocused" format="integer"/>
<attr name="textColorFocused" format="integer"/>

</declare-styleable>

</resources>

As you see, we first declared a 'styleable' with the name of our custom Class. Two attributes were then added to contain the values of our focused & unfocused text colors. By default, attributes have values of String, but in our case, we needed integers to represent the resource id's we'll declare in our colors.xml file. You can also declare formats such as "boolean" & others if that suits the requirements of your own project.

Next, we declare values for these custom attributes in our layout's XML file: tutorial4.xml

<LinearLayout     xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"

xmlns:pj="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/com.pocketjourney.tutorials"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:padding="10px">

<com.pocketjourney.view.TextOnlyButton

android:id="@+id/text_only_button"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginTop="5px"
style="?android:attr/buttonStyleSmall"
android:text="Text Button"
pj:textColorNotFocused="@drawable/white"
pj:textColorFocused="@drawable/android_orange"/>

</LinearLayout>

Referring to our new attributes is actually a two step process. First we declared a new namespace (in our case called 'pj' as short for PocketJourney) in the parent layout of our custom class:

xmlns:pj="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/com.pocketjourney.tutorials"

Next we specified the values of our new attributes in the XML usage of our TextOnlyButton:

pj:textColorNotFocused="@drawable/white"
pj:textColorFocused="@drawable/android_orange"

Now you can see why we specified our format="integer". Our custom attributes point to the resource id's of colors specified in our colors.xml file.

Retrieving Custom Attributes During Class Instantiation

Since our Activity has many constructors, we delegate the attribute parsing to an init() method to keep our code clean.

int notFocusedTextColor, focusedTextColor;

private void init(AttributeSet attrs) {

Resources.StyledAttributes a = getContext().obtainStyledAttributes(attrs,R.styleable.TextOnlyButton);
notFocusedTextColor = a.getColor(R.styleable.TextOnlyButton_textColorNotFocused, 0xFF000000);
focusedTextColor = a.getColor(R.styleable.TextOnlyButton_textColorFocused, 0xFF000000);

}

By now you've undoubtedly seen the AttributeSet that is always passed into an Activity. Well now you get to use it. First we obtain the StyledAttributes instance by requesting just the StyledAttributes for our custom Class. Next, we call the getColor() and pass two variables: the name of the attribute we want along with a default value in case the user did not specify one.

Take note of our styled attribute's name as it's a combination of our custom class's name and the attribute we specified in the attrs.xml file (e.g. TextOnlyButton_textColorNotFocused).

And That's It

You can now readily pass your own custom attributes and keep your View variables cleanly enclosed in your XML files. You can download the source to see for yourself. Just look at Tutorial #4.

This very simple tutorial will add to your Android UI (user interface) development arsenal. How? B

This very simple tutorial will add to your Android UI (user interface) development arsenal. How? Buttons that display as simple text or as images are basic elements of any application. By following the two steps below, these buttons can be easily created with Google's Android by simply extending the current Button and ImageButton classes.

We will create these two new Button extensions as shown:

Step 1: Override drawBackground()

This step shows the beauty of proper Object-Oriented programming. Because Google's Android draws the background button image in a separate method, all we need do is override that method and then not call its parent.

public void onDrawBackground(Canvas	canvas) {

// Override this method & do nothing. This prevents the parent.onDrawBackground(canvas)
// from drawing the button's background.

}

Step 2: Handle onFocus() by overriding onDraw()

We listen for the focus event and update the Button's text color or button image that way as well. But we'll do it this way for now.

public void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {

// Since this Button now has no background. We must set the text color to indicate focus.
if (isFocused()) {

// Set the focused text color. In the case of ImageOnlyButton we would .
// instead do setImageResource(imageResourceFocused);
setTextColor(focusedTextColor);

} else {

// Set the non-focused text color. In the case of ImageOnlyButton we would .
// instead do setImageResource(imageResourceNotFocused);
setTextColor(notFocusedTextColor);

}

super.onDraw(canvas);

}

You might be wondering where those text color and image variables come from. We will obtain these focused & not-focused images or text colors from variables passed in from the XML resource file as you'll see by reading the source code. I won't go into how that happens here. Instead, I'll keep this tutorial simple and point you to my next tutorial where I will discuss how to create & pass such custom variables.

And That's It

You can download the source to see for yourself.
