Hailing from Chicago, my favorite scene for indie music (it provided the world with the beauty that is Andrew Bird, after all), The Sea and Cake is yet another clean and simple indie pop rock band. Around since the early 90's, a melting pot of influences marks their earlier work, evocative of a sort of more subdued, Vampire Weekend-esque sound--minus the fact that I don't like them. Sue me. Sufjan Stevens doesn't like them either. I'm not alone. No one gives a fuck about your Oxford Comma, Vampire Weekend. Sorry.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. The Sea and Cake is much more palatable--MUCH. Maybe VW was a bad musical comparison. I was going for the tropical/afro-rhythms kind of thing. So maybe they used to be like a less annoying Vampire Weekend plus Yo La Tengo. Whatever. You get the point. While the vocals weren't as strong back in the day, (they've improved over time, like I said), the old stuff is worth listening to. Good for summer days eating cake by the sea. Or just being by the sea. Or just eating cake. Take your pick. In any case, try their self-titled debut out. It's got a very distinctive sound.

Although that sound has evolved into more current indie pop rock, they're still great. My pick of the day comes from their newest but not really new album, 'Everybody.' The song's called "Crossing Line" and it's amazing. Catchy fuzzed guitar line, hand claps, simplistically smart lyrics, among The Sea and Cake's better vocals--what more could you ask for? Britain's David Ford Brings His Sound to Los Angeles

You're sitting in your car driving somewhere or listening to your ipod walking through the streets of a familiar, or unfamiliar, place listening to a song, or a set of songs, and you feel like you're in a movie; or you should be.

This imprompto soundtrack is spot on. The music, the lyrics, the cadence of the artists voice, the rhythm of the guitars, the snap of the snare, all of it puts you in the moment and you're lost; to the music.

And that's just the first track.

On his sophomore album, David Ford takes his diary, empties it out, and tries to convey to the listener the turmoil of his new-found self-awareness and wanting for things that may have been, up until now, unattainable. He swimmingly croons through a sea of relationship-laden tracks as if David Gray was sitting on a lifeguard tower ready to jump in and save him with some of his own British electro-pop styled mouth-to-mouth. Mr. Gray better put on some more SPF30, because he's gonna be there a while.

We here at eargoggles have just secured a copy of his latest album Songs For the Road out on Original Signal Recordings earlier this April, digitally in February. Great to listen to in the car; probably the reason for the title. Upon first listen it is quite impressive; hit well with the current weather change in Southern California (a little relief from the low-100s with a balmy mid-70s day). It has, as mentioned before--and we hate to equate artists to other artists, a David Gray feel, with maybe some of Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst in here--Mason Jennings, perhaps--wait! no!! Jason Anderson. You know, good sweater music--good for a brisk walk or an Autumn read on the porch sippin' on some coffee or tea--with some Bailey's or whiskey.

The album was released last fall in the UK where it received rave reviews from The Sunday Times (Best of 2007: "...a devastating reminder that an artist witha keening voice, an ear for melody and a willingness, lyrically, to wrestle withdemons can still take the breathaway."), The Guardian ("…[Ford] has a real and thrilling edge."), and The Sun ("This is a sublime 37 minutes of music. It’s melodic songwriting on par with Damien Rice, folk singing reminiscent of The Pogues and lyric writing as good as Bright Eyes."). Wow! So we were spot on with the Bright Eyes compairison.

He's got all the tools for a succesful commercial jump to America. He's got the voice, the gimicky sound, and a signature look; he wears a fedora/bowler-like hat (see above and in the videos).

Now, when you watch him it's a totalydifferent story. At first I thought I'd been bitten as we vigorously hiked the trails at Detweiler Park in Peoria this past weekend, but I'm pretty sure I had new bites this morning that were not there yesterday. It rather creeps me out to think I'm being attacked in my sleep, but such are the indignities of the season.

Having said that, there are a few redeeming elements that may help to redeem the situation. One, of course, is air conditioners. I have one, which is likely to be installed in my window by the next time the temp hits 90. It is noisy, but then so are the planes flying in and out of Midway, the trains to the South, East and West, and my neighbor's pool filter and the barking dogs, woof woof, and none of those things cool the premises or keep out mosquitos. I bought my air conditioner last year when I had an ebay windfall, and that $150 or so was one of the best investments I've ever made. Air conditioners may also be found in malls and movie theaters, both of which I am far more likely to visit on unbearably hot days.

The solace of the Solstice is that from here on out I can begin to watch the days grow shorter and look forward to fall. Also behind me are the labors of cleaning and preparing for my daughter's birthday party, which directly follows her last week of school and directly precedes my spouse's birthday and Father's Day. Now I have a few things to look forward to, not the least of which is a party at the Compound. Thanks to school and work schedules, we haven't seen the Bubs and Mizbubs and their lovely offspring in far too long. I can't wait to see the new landscaping and I need more chances to show off my neon green toenails in a setting that involves children, alcohol and pyrotechnics. Just to clarify, the children do not consume the alcohol but I surely am looking forward to quaffing a cocktail or two.

We've also been trying to come up with ideas for an affordable family vacation, which leaves me caught in the middle between one person who is determined to go to back to the Dells and another who will go anywhere but. We've been considering The House on the Rock, which I suppose would be more interesting if I read Neil Gaiman's American Gods first. Truth be told if we can't afford Seattle, my first choice would be to go back to the Kalahari Resort in the Dells, squeeze myself into an inner tube, and float down the lazy river with my neon green toenails all up in some poor sod's kisser. As much as the joint was overflowing with humanity on Labor Day weekend last year, it was conveniently located and self-contained, with a decent assortment of things to do including free activities for kids.

I fully understand and sympathize with my spouse's desire not to vacation at Chuck E. Cheese, but the main benefit of a franchised vacation for families with children is that the prepackaged nature of the experience reduces the stress of uncertainty and minimizes juvenile complaining and resistance. In short, the kind of vacation that interests me is the sort where I still have enough energy left to scrounge up a glass of wine and a swim after my daughter goes to bed without it being too much of a hassle.

Farther down the line, I have a couple of musical events to look forward to. The first is a free Andrew Bird concert on September 3 at Frank Gehry's Pritzker Pavillion at Millennium Park, which sounds like a fine time indeed. I always take notice when Bird comes up on my shuffle, leading me to believe I should perhaps actually take the time to listen to his albums all the way through. There aren't too many artists who can make as good use of a violin, so to see him for free in such a lovely setting is a rare treat.

I also have a ticket to see Nick Cave at the Riviera in September. This worked out very nicely, because the first show announced was for Monday the 29th. That one sold out before I could get my ticket, but the Sunday show works out much better for me regardless. I've wanted to see Nick Cave perform ever since I watched his stunning 2003 performance video, God is in the House. The man knows how to work his persona, and he wears a suit onstage out of respect for the audience and the event. It took me years to appreciate his music because the Birthday Party was too raucous for me, but the balladry phase provided a safe entry point and now I'm sold.

Other things I'm looking forward to are more uncertain, such as my next trip to Las Vegas and my next Rufus Wainwright show. I am jonesing achingly for both, but for the moment I shall have to live on hope and faith alone. Speaking of hope, I hope you are enjoying your summer thus far and that I can post here more often, now that the June school and birthday crunch is over. Despite my usual complaints, I am taking time to smell the flowers and to walk as much as possible before it gets too hot to flipping move a muscle. There are few things better than that first iced coffee in the morning, one small consolation for the unreasonable hour at which my daughter's summer day camp schedule requires me to lurch out of bed and into the bright morning sun.

One final thing that i am looking forward to is the day when I can insert an image into my blog, because it seems Wordpress has altered this function and now it is not working for me in either Firefox or Safari. At first when nothing happened I assumed it was a Firefox 3 problem, but such was not the case. At least now you know I tried to spruce things up around here, but it's always something.

Singer/Songwriter Andrew Bird has been blogging about writing, recording, and producing his next album on the New York Time's Blog, Measure for Measure

If you click on the blog link, you'll be able to listen to a new song off of the album entitled "Oh, No." I warn you, reader, it will be stuck in your head for the next week.

This blog post is particularly interesting because Bird discusses the unsettling feeling of being happy with the album. He writes that typically, at this stage in the game, he scraps his whole album. This time, he feels happy with it...so what's the problem?

Well, anyone who's produced anything--term paper, painting, building, etc.--knows how strange it feels to actually feel satisfied in the work.

The grand question: Must the creator suffer in order to produce a quality piece? Or, instead, is satisfaction a sign of mastery? Perhaps mastery is what is pushing Bird into the experimental realm he describes in the blog?

I enjoyed a lazy Sunday yesterday, watching the first part of Scorsese's No Direction Home. As with his memoir Chronicles, it's great to experience Dylan in his own words, talking about the artists who influenced him and his journey from reinterpreting traditional folk numbers to writing his own lyrics.

Dylan at the beginning of the sixties comes across as a musical sponge, describing his ability to learn a song after hearing it just a couple of times. Just as his early sound is indebted to the past, it goes without saying that he continues to influence modern musicians. The best part of Todd Haynes' fictionalised biopic I'm Not There was definitely the vast array of artists who contributed their own take on his music, from Eddie Vedder to Iron & Wine and Stephen Malkmus.

Well, the entire bill has been filled except for one slot. And they are allowing the fans to vote on it. Why am I mentioning this? Beati Paoli is on the ballot, that's why silly! Everyone's doing covers these days. Most of the time I cringe visibly, sometimes at the forced, imitated inflections of voice, sometimes at the lack of originality, sometimes at the overexertion of artistic license, but often because I will never again be able to listen to a song I once enjoyed without a terrible rip-off of it echoing in the back of my mind. A copy of the I'm Not There soundtrack recently made its way into my hands, begging a listen or two, although I am usually wary of Dylan covers. I liked it well enough, generally; it had its gems and its duds for me--but that's not important, although I always find my own musical opinion important. The point is, it made me think about covers--and Bob Dylan covers specifically. And for the love of Bob, I felt the need to discuss my favorite Dylan covers with all of you.

#4. Lay Lady Lay - Magnet & Gemma Hayes

Although it's something I would likely do, don't discount this cover because it appears on the Mr. and Mrs. Smith soundtrack. It's good. Naturally, it's more produced than Dylan's version, featuring strings and horns and whatnot, but it's not totally dissimilar (or beyond recognition like uh.. Ministry's version of this song, for instance). Magnet's take on it was original enough to be memorable, though, turning it into a sultry duet, rather than one man's attempted smooth operating in order to peel some panties. As beautifully as Dylan can pull that off, this version's worth a listen. You can find it and some other nice little Norwegian Magnet tunes at his myspace.

#3. Ring Them Bells - Sufjan Stevens

I'm hesitant to say too much about this one because the song pretty much speaks for itself. It's one of those absolutely delightfully whimsical track you'd expect from Sufjan Stevens. Tempo changes, sweet harmonies, a wide range of instruments, dynamics, dramatics, etc.--all the hallmarks of Sufjan. He made "Ring Them Bells" his own, but not in the way that makes me die on the inside while listening to it. Give it a listen at the I'm Not There Soundtrack myspace.

#2. Simple Twist of Fate - Jeff Tweedy

This song is one of the covers to appear on I'm Not There. I was less worried about Jeff Tweedy's take on the song (I like both him and Wilco very much) and more worried about any cover of this song in general, it being my favorite song on Blood On the Tracks and all. However, I should have had more faith in Tweedy; his rendition of this song makes it difficult for me to place it at #2, as it would be worthy of #1, if not for the fact that I'm thoroughly enamored with #1 and have been long enough for it to reach 367 plays on iTunes. Tweedy not only does the song justice, but, if I may be so bold as to suggest such a thing, makes an even more poignant and beautiful version than Dylan. Excuse me for my heresy. Vocally, he does mimic Dylan somewhat, but he brings a different sort of tone to the song. He also replaces the harmonica, which (excuse the heresy again) I always found nice but a little out of place in this song, for violin. I believe you can only find this version on the I'm Not There soundtrack, but you can listen to it, along with three of my other favorites from the soundtrack, online here.

#1. Oh Sister - Andrew Bird

I will say this confidently without apologizing for the heresy: this version simply outdoes Dylan's. Those who know me know my undying love for Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and whistler extraordinaire Andrew Bird--and hear of it far too often, I'm sure. I love his voice and his whistling and his violin playing and all of them are beautifully on display here, complemented by the lovely harmonies of Nora O'Connor, whose voice may have been made just for singing with Bird. To put it into terms that all you math nerds out there can understand, this song comes seriously close to that elusive asymptote of musical perfection. It also features one of the most beautiful instrumental sections I've ever heard starting around 3 minutes and 40 seconds in. It's the best of Bob and Bird and it's brilliant. I command you to listen to it immediately at Andrew Bird's myspace or on the new Soldier On EP; then I command you go out and get your hands on Andrew Bird's entire catalogue, because he's just that mind-blowingly incredible.
