I was reading in a recent article that each year a area the size of Belgium is cut down (12,500 square miles). The total area of the Amazon jungle today is 3 million square miles. So in a matter of 267 years there will be no more Amazon. Doesn't sound so bad actually. That's just the problem. That we live in a society that puts band aids on the world problems instead of looking for long term solutions. Even our way of solving problems is merely superficial.

I was eating dinner with my great friend Åse yesterday and she was telling me about when she arrived in Sweden in the 70's how all political decisions where discussed on the television and radio constantly. And the question politicians always asked themselves was, "How is this going to affect our children?" How wonderful it would be to live in a society that thinks in this way, where the leading factor in making decisions is not money, but the well being of all children. What governmental actions would take place immediately if the leaders of the USA began to think this way? More money to schools, free medical health, economic assistance to families with children, more paid leave for parents after childbirth, homes for all families, more parks and green areas, social assistance for homeless children and those with physical and mental illnesses.

All of these things remind me of Sweden. Schooling is free (even University studies) and all children are fed free lunch everyday (up to High School graduation). Health care is free for everyone. Every family receives about 200 USD per child per month. Parents have the right to 450 days of paid leave (to be split between the mother and father). If a family does not have the means to pay rent, the government provides assistance. All cities are full of parks and green areas and excellent public transportation to minimize the need for cars in the city! It's to bad that most of this is quickly going down the drain...

What inspires me to mention the Amazon today? Recently Greenpeace celebrated a protest in Brasilia in honor of Sister Dorothy Stang who was assassinated in the area of Anapu, Brasil where 31 illegal lumber industries which, despite working 24 hours around the clock, where unable to quench the thirst both the USA and Europe has for wood. What is the solution? We could put all of the workers and their illegal bosses in jail (just put a band aid on the issue) or we could reevaluate our own lives and the society of consumerism we live in.

For whoever is interested, find out what Greenpeace is currently doing and how we can all be involved in helping stop the deforestation of the Amazon jungle.

Lei en un artículo reciente que cada año se destruye un area del Amazonas del tamaño de Bélgica (30 mil kilometros cuadrados). El Amazonas hoy en día cubre un area de 8 millones de km cuadrados. Osea que al paso que vamos en 267 años no habra mas Amazonas. Lo cual no suena tan grave. El problema justamente es que vivimos en una sociedad que solo le pone curitas a los males y no pensamos a largo plazo.

Ayer estuve comiendo en la casa de una gran amiga mia Åse que me contaba que cuando ella llego a Suecia en la televisión y en la radio se dicutía constantemente las decisiones politicas que se hiban a tomar. Y la pregunta que siempre se hacian era, "¿Esto como va afectar a nuestros hijos?" Que maravilla una sociedad que piensa asi, donde el factor de mayor fuerza decisiva no es el dinero, sino el bienestar de todos los niños. ¿Que medidas se tomarian inmediatamente en Colombia si nuestros lideres actuaran asi? Mas escuelas, ayuda médica gratuita, asistencia a las familias con hijos, periodo paga para que los padres esten en casa luego del nacimiento de un hijo, hogar para todos, muchos parques y areas de naturaleza, asistencia social para niños huerfanos, maltratados o con necesidades físicas o mentales especiales.

Esto me recuerda mucho a Suecia. Aca la escuela es gratuita y todos los niños reciben almuerzo gratis. Aca el sistema médico es gratuito para todos. Cada familia recibe una ayuda económica de como 200 dolares al mes por hijo. Los padres tiene derecho a quedarse en casa 450 dias pagos (para dividir entre padre y madre) con sus hijos. El que no tiene para pagar arriendo recive una ayuda del gobierno para que tenga hogar. Las ciudades en Suecia tiene parques y bosques por todas partes y las familias con hijos invalidos reciben toda clase de asistencias de la sociedad! Que pena que todo este lo esten poco a poco desmantelando...

¿Que me inspira a mencionar el Amazonas? Greenpeace celebro recientemente una protesta en honor a la Monja Dorothy Stang que fue asecinada en la región de Anapu en el Brasil donde habian 31 madereras ilegales que con empleados trabajando 24 horas al dia, no podian abastecer la consumcion que madera que hay en los EEUU y Europa. ¿Cual es la solución? Podriamos encarcelar a todos los trabajadores y sus jefes que ilegalmente destruyen el Amazonas (osea ponerle una curita al mal) o podriamos reevaluar nuestras vidas y la sociedad de consumismo en que vivimos.

Para los que estan interesados en ayudar lean lo que la organización Greenpeace esta haciendo y como todos podemos participar.

Mi ejemplo hoy es de una insignificancia total, sin embargo es justamente eso lo que siento que ilustra tan bien esta situación.

Estoy construyendo una caja para mandar las pocas pertenencias que me quedan a Miami. Una experiencia muy educacional, pues no se nada en el campo de transporte maritimo mundial, pero tengo curiosidad de aprender. Pues se que es una industria de billones de dolares y que es uno de los pilares que sostienen nuestra sociedad moderna de consumismo (con la cual no estoy completamente de acuerdo). En todo caso, el mundo mercadiario ha creado algunos estandares y unas soluciones muy praticas. El concepto el cual la mayoria de nosotros conocemos es el de palé. Basicamente una base de madera diseñada de tal forma que es facil levantarla con una carretilla elevadora. Lo que no sabia es que a esa base se le podia agregar lados encajables. Que es la forma en que estoy armando mi caja. Los lados encajables son basicamente cuatro tablas juntadas por bisagras de metal. El tamaño mas comun de palé es de 120 cm x 80 cm y los lados encajables son de 20 cm de alto cada uno.

Entonces uno puede poner uno encima del otro y gracias a unas alitas que tienen las cuatro esquinas, queda todo muy estable y es simple de armar.
 

Mi caja mide 160 cm de alto lo cual me da casi dos metros cuadrados de espacio. Pero voy a llevar un teclado que con su estuche mide exactamente 160 cm. No estoy seguro si sea peligroso tenerlo tan exacto pues la tapa que se pone me da la impresion necesita dos centimetros de espacio. Y no quiero dañar el teclado o el estuche, entonces tal vez sería mejor agregar un lado encajable mas, para tener espacio libre en la parte de arriba de la caja. Aunque tal vez es mejor al transportarla, que todo quede empacado bien exacto y con tal de que no se le ponga nada de mucho peso ensima, estaria bien. ¿No se realmente? Entonces decidi llamar a la companía en donde compre la caja para pedir consejos.
Lo llame y le conte mi situación y las dos opciones que estaba considerando. El no me pudo dar un buen consejo pues no sabe bien como se transportan las cajas. Entonces le pregunte que si podia comprar un lado encajable mas (que vale aproximadamente 8 dolares) para llevar conmigo el dia que voy a enviar la caja. Si en el mueye, los que saben del tema, me aconsejan que deje un poco de espacio arriba, pues bien, agrego el lado encajable extra. Y si no, le pregunte que si lo podria devolver, ya que no me serviria de nada. Lógico, pense yo. Este es le punto en donde pensamos de manera diferente.

El se puso enojado de que yo me atreviera a pedir tal cosa. Para ser exactos dijo lo siguiente en un tono de voz desagradable, "Lo siento señor pero asi no hago yo mis negocios. Lo que usted esta sugeriendo insinua que yo le preste a usted un lado encajable. Usted no puede llamar y pedirme tal cosa."Si puedo llamar a pedirle tal cosa, lo acabo de hacer."

Si, de cierta manera tiene razón. Si yo voy al puerto y resulta que no necesito el lado encajable extra que compre, en principio me lo presto. Pero si lo nesecitara, el se hubiera ganado un cliente. Después de su respuesta desagradable no solo ha perdido un cliente, sino a todos los clientes que yo mandara con mis recomendaciones. ¿Acaso no es el mismo concepto el conducir un auto de prueba? Me prestan el auto para que yo lo saque a dar una vuelta. Si me gusta y siento que lo necesito, lo compro, si no me voy sin compromiso alguno. Es mas, estaria dispuesto a apostar que si uno sacara un auto para darle un prueba y uno se estrellara, aun ahi no estarias obligado a comprarlo (pues me imagino que los autos de prueba estan asegurados de tal manera, claro que preguntaría antes de hacerlo).

He escuchado de albumes musicales que se han grabado completamente con equipos prestados. Basicamente una banda va a una tienda de equipos de música, compra todo lo que necesita, guardan el recibo y todos los empaques y con tal de tratar las cosas para que esten como nuevas y no tardarse mas de un mes, pueden devolver todo y recibir su dinero de vuelta. ¿Y por que no, a quien le importa? Rico poder promober la cultura y estoy seguro que si a la banda le iría bien, volverian para comprar todos los equipos que usaron y mas. Eso esta mas en linea con mis opiniones sobre el consumismo moderno. La mayoria de nosotros tenemos demasiado entonces para que comprar algo que no se va usar mas de una vez. Para mi el prestar es una idea maravillosa, incluso a nivel de negocios.

Yo trabajo para cubrir mis necesidades básicas y para sentirme útil y pleno como persona. No para ganar millones. Mi papá me regalo una vez un aviso con cinco pasos para el éxito en los negocios (que aun cuelga junto a mi escritorio) y uno de ellos es, "Hagase amigos, no clientes." Mi lugar de trabajo es, como adulto, uno de los principales circulos sociales que tengo. Yo quiero conocer gente, quiero hacerme amigos! Es obvio que quiero hacerle favores a la gente, que quiero prestarle a alguien una cosa que no saben si nesesiten o no. ¿Estoy loco, piensa alguien mas asi?

Antes de acabar quiero dar un consejo. Nunca abran una cuenta en un banco Sueco, almenos que sea absolutamente necesario. Aun no entiendo como logran mantener la filosofía de "Entregueme su dinero para que se lo guarde, y a la vez lo usare para ganar mas dinero, y ademas le voy a cobrar por el favor." ¿No hay nadie que haya oido del concepto de "Cuenta bancaria gratuita"? El único banco que si recomiendo en Suecia es JAK Banco de Miembros que es una organización sin animo de lucro en donde los miembros son los mismos dueños del banco y se prestan dinero sin intereses. Muy interesante, mirenlo!

Ah, y por último quiero hacerle propaganda y recomendar a una empresa que me ha ayudado mucho en este proceso de aprendizaje. El señor atraz de quien estoy mandando la caja a Miami es un hombre amable, efectivo, honesto y con mucho conocimiento de la industria de transporte marítimo y lo recomiendo con gusto. Si algun dia necesitas mandar algo de Gotenburgo a cualquier parte del mundo contacta a Lorenzo Urquiaga. No me sorprende ver que lo primero que aparece en su página web es su lema: 35 años sirviendo con exelencia. Entonces creo que me equivoque, son 3, IKEA, Clas Ohlson y Lorenzo Shipping.

Tienes alguna experiencia que quicieras compartir, me encantaría oirla (escibe un comentario). Sabes de otras companias de exelencia en Suecia? Espero que el mercado Sueco aprenda pronto sobre servicio al cliente. Aparte de eso es un lugar maravilloso en donde vivir y trabajar y con gusto he pagado muchos impuestos para mantener una sociedad que se preocupa de los menos afortunados. Yo me considero muy afortunado.

My example today is of absolutely no significance, but it is just its minuteness that I think illustrates the situation so well.

I am building a box to ship the few belongings I have left to the US. It is a very educational experience, as I have no knowledge about how shipping things around the world works, but am curious to learn. As I know it is a multi billion dollar industry and one of the corner stones of western consumer society (which I have very alternative thoughts about). In any case, merchants have standardized certain things and of course come up with very simple and practical solutions. There is a concept most of us are familiar with, the pallet. Basically a wooden base designed in such a way that it can easily be lifted with a fork lift. What I didn't know is that these pallets can have collars. Which is exactly how I am building my box. A collar is basically four wooden sides held together by metal hinges. The most common standard for a pallet I have learned is 120 cm x 80 cm and each collar is 20 cm high.

So you can stack one collar on top of another, thanks to small holders which overlap on each of the 4 corners, making it all very stable and simple to do.
 

My box is 160 cm high, giving me almost 2 square meters of packing space. But I am taking a keyboard which, when in its case is exactly 160 cm. I'm not sure how dangerous it will be to have it so exact as the lid you put on top of the box seems to go into the packing area 2 cm. Of course I don't want to damage my keyboard, so maybe I should add another 20 cm and leave some empty room on top. But maybe it is better for the packing to be tight and if nothing terribly heavy will be put on top of my box it would be fine, I don't know. So I decided to call the company where I bought the box for some friendly advice.
I called and told him my situation and the two options I was considering. He didn't really have any advice as he is not sure how things are packed or shipped on the boat. So I asked him if I could buy an extra collar (which costs roughly 8 dollars) to take with me to the harbor the day I will be shipping it. If at the harbor they advise me to add some extra room, then great I will use it be a happy camper. If I don't use it, I was wondering if I could return it, as I will have no use for it. Logical, I thought. This is were we differ.

He was shocked that I could have the nerve to call and suggest such a thing. To quote him exactly, "I'm sorry Mr. but that is not how I do business. What you are requesting would basically mean I am lending you a pallet collar. You can't call and ask such a thing." I thought to myself, "I just did call and ask such a thing."

Yes, to some extent he is right. If I were to go to the docks with the extra collar and it turned out I didn't need it, he would have just leant it to me. If I did need it, he would have made a happy customer. As of now, he's lost a customer and all the other people I was going to recommend to him. Isn't that the idea with test driving a car? I lend it to you, if you like and need it, buy it, no strings attached. I bet you could crash during your test drive and still walk away without buying it (I'm sure the test car is insured for that, though I would definitely ask, before trying it). I've heard of music albums which have been recorded entirely on borrowed studio equipment. A band goes to a pro-audio store. buys everything they need, keeps the receipts and packaging and as long as they keep the stuff in new condition and are done within a month, return it all for a full money back refund. Who cares, why not promote culture, and I'm sure if that band ever makes it big, they will be back to buy everything they used and more. That fits my view of modern consumer society. We all collect to much stuff, don't buy what you don't need in the long run. Borrowing is a great idea, even in the business world.

I work primarily to survive and feel fulfilled. Not to make cash. My dad once gave me a sign with 5 steps to success in business and one of them was, "Make friends, not customers." My work place, in my adult life, is probably one of my main sources for socializing. I want to meet people, make friends! Of course I want to do favors, of course I want to lend out something that someone else maybe or maybe doesn't need. Am I crazy? Somebody pinch me!

My last 5 cents. Never open an account in a Swedish bank unless you absolutely have to. I still don't understand how they get away with the concept of "I give you my money for safe keeping, so that you can use it to make more money and charge me for that privilege." Has nobody here heard of "Free banking"? The only bank I do recommend is JAK Member Owned Bank an interest free banking cooperative, which I am happy to be a member of. Very interesting, check it out!

Oh and finally, free advertising and a recommendation to an excellent business partner during this learning experience of mine. The guy who I am sending the box through is a wonderful, caring, effective and knowledgeable man in the shipping industry, whom I highly recommend if you ever need to ship anything anywhere from Gothenburg, Lorenzo Urquiaga. I'm not surprised to see the first thing you see on his website is his motto: 35 years of service excellence. So I guess I was wrong, there were 3, IKEA, Clas Ohlson and Lorenzo Shipping.

No se porque los adultos tenemos tanta dificultad con esto. Estoy leiendo un libro llamado "El camino del artista" (The Artist's Way) de Julia Cameron que habla sobre lo importante que es el jugar y el dejar salir al niño que llevamos dentro para lo que es el proceso de creatividad. Pablo Picasso dijo, "Todos los niños son artistas. El problema es como permanecer artista al crecer." Carl Jung dijo, "La creación de algo nuevo no se logra atravez del intelecto sino por el juego del instincto por necesidad. La mente creadora juega con los objetos que ama." Esa es la forma en que veo yo mi trabajo como compositor, el jugar con objetos que amo, ritmo, melodía, armonía, sonidos, texturas, palabras. De esta manera es que el permitirme jugar un domingo por la tarde lo veo como parte integra de mi trabajo y un componente esencial en el éxito de mi carrera como artista.

Hacer teatro, de alguna forma hace que el jugar sea facil y se cienta natural. Me encanta pintarme la cara, disfrazarme. Hace poco tuve una fiesta de pascuas en donde luego de haber pintado huevos nos pintamos las caras. También como parte de un colectivo artistico anti-elitista en el cual participo, siempre escojo personajes diferentes para nuestros encuentros y la vez pasada fui como el Ladron de Besos, Pierre.

Es bastante común que el teatro y los disfrazes me acompañen al escenario musical. Tuve una ocación bastante comica una vez que me pinte la cara para un concierto. Tocamos en una fiesta de Negros y Blancos (en honor al Carnaval del mismo nombre que se celebra en Colombia) y yo me pinte la mitad de la cara de blanco y la otra mitad la deje tal cual con una raya negra crusandome el ojo, como se ve en la foto que sigue.

Yo pensé que mi disfraz estaba muy bueno y cuando termino el concierto baje del escenario a seguir festejando con mis amigos. Brent, un buen amigo mio, al verme me pregunto, "¿Cuando te pintaste la cara, crei que recien te bajaste del escenario?" Pues el habia estado parado a la derecha mia entre el público y todo el concierto habia visto a un Andrés Solé bastante común y corriente parado en el escenario tocando.

¿Es importante el jugar? Haz tomado parte en un flash mob, y si no, por que no? ¿Cuando fue la última vez que tuvieste una guerra de almohadas? Me encantaría saber lo que opinas...

I don't know why we adults have such a hard time with that. I am reading a book called "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron which talks very much about how important play and the child within are an essential part of creativity. Pablo Picasso said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." Carl Jung said, "The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves." That is the way I see musical composition, it is me playing with objects I love, rhythm, melody, harmony, sounds, textures, words. So I feel the exercise of allowing myself to play is part of my job, an important component in the success of my career as artist.

Doing theater somehow makes play seem natural and easy. I love painting my face and dressing up. Just recently I had an easter party at home where after painting eggs we went on to painting each other's faces. As part of a anti-elitist artistic collective I am a different character at each gathering. Last time I was Pierre, the thief of kisses.

It is quite often that performance and dressing up shows up on stage in my concerts. I have a funny story of a concert where my dressing up only half worked. It was at a party with theme "Black's and White's (after a Carnival in Colombia by the same name). So I had painted half my face white and left the other half as is with only a black line down the middle of my eye, as you see in the picture.

I thought I looked quite nifty! I got off stage and went around mingling and ran into Brent, a good friend of mine who asked me, "When did you paint your face, I thought you just got off stage?" We'll he was standing in the audience to right of the stage and during the entire concert seen only a rather common looking Andrés Solé perform.

Is palyfulness important? Have you tried being part of a flash mob, if not, why not? When was the last time you had a pillow fight? I'd love to hear your thoughts...

Andrés Orjuela aims for Miami

Who hasn't dreamed of just leaving everything behind, of walking out the door, closing it and never coming back. A person who actually turns dreams into reality is singer Andrés Solé, who is leaving Gothenburg for sunnier horizons.

It is very often a thought stays only as a thought and nothing comes of it. This is definitely not the case with Andrés "Solé" Orjuela who is the singer in the latin rock band Solé. I meet Andrés in his one room apartment where classical music and sunshine sets the backdrop for our interview. A bed and other furniture have been squeezed together to make room for his elegant black piano, studio equipment, guitars, computers and CD's which meet in a creative order. In the corner a manequin with a pink wig stands and points at an Elvis poster. The manequin has already been sold as has the piano. The studio and everything else will soon be part of a huge garage sale. Andrés Orjuela is moving. In August he is will be leaving Sweden to continue life's journey in Miami, USA.
"I'm moving to follow my dream! I love music with a passion and want to live from and for my music," says Andrés and smiles as he thinks about his solo career. It is obvious that he is completely focused. August is just around the corner and there are a lot of things to take care of.
His life is made up of many ongoing processes. The musical creation process and that of letting a concert take its form are some examples. Moving to Miami is another. And the process of getting rid of many things he has gathered over the years requires a lot of work. But he points out that it is important to not allow oneself to become to emotionally attached to things.
"Things shouldn't weigh me down, hold me back" he says.

It is easy to be dragged along by Andrés's strong drive and will to develop. He speaks with passion about the process of change.
"You can prepare yourself for what you think is coming, but one must be sensitive and open to following where destiny leads you."
Letting himself be inspired and following his gut feeling is something Andrés has done most of his life. Since his childhood in Bogotá, Colombia, he's followed his heart, studies and job opportunities to Miami, Santiago, Berkeley and Gothemburg. His desicion to return to Miami came while visiting it during the winter of 2007.
"As I walked down the streets I could feel how Miami called my name. That is where I want to live" says Andrés. "After I had made the decision, I felt a strong and positve force within me and a deep sense of internal peace.

Miami is said to be the world capital for latin rock. He has already made some important contacts within the music industry to continue growing as an artist. Miami is the third largest "Colombian city" if one counts the number of Colombian's living there, despite the fact that it is in the US. For Andrés, Colombia holds a very special place in his heart.
When we talk about his years in Sweden and what he will remember, he spontaneously says, "Closeness to nature! Swedish cities integrate nature into the cities in such a wonderful way which is very different from how Colombian cities are built." He adds that Gothemburg is small enough that he is constantly running into friends around town, but large enough to have a sprawling cultural life.
"I also love the fact that Gothemburg is a port. When I stand and look out over the ocean, I feel infinitely small and endlessly huge at the same time; it inspires me and helps me think big!"

Much of Andrés's life is about making his dreams reality and his expectations of the future are extensive. His hope is that his music will really reach out and touch people's lives.
"With my music, I want to create social events for people to meet. If I can, through my music, inspire someone to grow, I'll feel completely satisfied.

Andrés Orjuela en camino a Miami

Quien no ha soñado con dejar todo, salir por la puerta y nunca volver. Una personja que convierte los sueños en realidad es el cantante Andrés Solé, que deja a Gotemburgo por cielos mas azules.

Es muy común que un pensamiento se quede en pensamiento y no mas. Este definitivamente no es el caso con Andrés "Solé" Orjuela que es el cantante de la banda de rock latino, Solé. Me encuentro con Andrés en su apartamento en donde la música clasica y el sol que entra por las percianas crean un ambiente perfecto para una entrevista. Su cama y demas muebles se han arrinconado para hacer espacio para su elegante piano negro, sus equipos de grabación, guitarras, computadores y discos, todos en un orden creativo. En una esquina hay un manequin con una peluca rosada que apunta su mano hacia el afiche de Elvis en la pared. El manequin ya se vendio y el piano también. Los equipos de estudio y demas cosas pronto se venderan en una gran subasta. Andrés Orjuela se va. En agosto deja a Suecia para seguir su camino en Miami, EEUU.
"Me voy para seguir mi sueño! Amo la música con pasión y quiero vivir para y de mi música," dice Andrés sonriendo al pensar en su carrera de solista. Es obvio que esta completamente consentrado. Agosto esta a la vuelta de la esquina y hay muchas cosas que arreglar.
Su vida esta hecha de procesos constantes. La creación musical es un proceso, el preparar un concierto es un proceso. Mudarse a Miami es otro. El proceso de deshacerse de cosas que uno ha adquerido atra vez de los años requiere mucho trabajo. Pero el agriega que es importante no atarse demasiado a lo material.
"Las cosas no deben ser un peso, no deben limitarme," dice el.

Es facil dejarse llevar por la corriente de la dedicación y determiación que Andrés tiene para desarrollarse. Se siente la pasión cuando el habla sobre el proceso del cambio en su vida.
"Uno se puede preparar para lo que uno cree va pasar en el futuro, pero uno debe ser sensitivo y abierto a lo que trae el destino y dejarse guiar.
Dejarse inspirar y seguir sus sentimientos es algo que Andrés ha hecho toda su vida. Desde su niñez en Bogotá, Colombia, ha seguido su corazón, sus estudios y oportunidades profesionales a Miami, Santiago, Berkeley y Gotemburgo. La decisión de regrezar ahora a Miami le llego al estar de visita en el invierno del 2007.
"Cuando caminaba por las calles de Miami sentía como la ciudad me llamaba. Ahi es donde quiero vivir," dice Andrés. "Luego de tomar la desición, sentí una fuerza positiva dentro de mi y un sentido de paz interior."

Miami dicen es la capital del rock latino. El ya ha hecho algunos contactos importantes dendro de la industria musical que lo ayudaran a seguir creciendo como artista. Miami es la tercera ciudad Colombiana mas grande, si uno cuenta habitantes Colombianos, aunque esta este localizada fuera del pais. Para Andrés Colombia tiene un lugar muy especial en su corazón.
Al hablar sobre sus años en Suecia y que recuerdos se llevara, dice espontaneamente "La cercanía a la naturaleza. La ciudades Suecas integran la naturaleza a la ciudad de una forma maravillosa, algo que no se ve tanto en Colombia." Agreiga que le gusta mucho Gotemburgo porque es una ciudad suficientemente pequeña que uno se encuentra constantemente con amigos en la calle, pero suficientemente grande para tener una buena vida cultural.
"Me encanta también que sea puerto. ¡Cuando me paro a mirar el mar me siento insignificante e infinitamente inmenzo a la vez, me inspira a soñar y pensar en grande!"

Mucha de la vida de Andrés se trata sobre el realizar sus sueños. Sus sueños son muchos y grandes. Su deseo con la música es que le llegue a la gente y les toque el corazón.
"Quiero poder crear eventos sociales con mi música donde la gente pueda venir a encontrarse y disfrutar. Si logro, atra vez de mi música, inspirar a que la gente crezca, me sentire completamente satisfecho."

My television debut was when I was twelve and I was that young boy in the green shirt eating with a big smile and singing, "Fruco, Fruco, el secreto del sabor" where the commercial ended with me tapping the ketchup bottle's base three times. Do you remember? Is there anyone who knows where one could get ahold of a copy of that commercial?

Primero te cuento sobre como se produjo el EP. El presupuesto que tenia para producir 1000 copias del EP (7 canciones en paquete a 4 colores de 6 lados digipack, grabado, mixeado y masterizado profesionalmente) fue de 6000 dolares. Lo grabamos en nuestro estudio, lo cual nos ahorro mucho dinero. Luego queria mandarlo a el mejor mix que podia, porque se lo importante que es este paso y realmente no sabía mucho del tema, entonces quería trabajar con expertos de clase mundial. Entonces me deje soñar y me pregunte, "Si yo pudiera escoger a quien fuera para que me hiciera el mix, a quien escogeria?" Saque los albumes de los artistas que mas escucho a ver ellos quienes usan y de ahi salieron 3 nombres. Entonces los contacte a los tres, les mande un mix preliminar preguntando si tenia tiempo, interes y cuanto cobraban. Uno de ellos no estaba disponible sino hasta un mes mas tarde, pero los otros dos respondieron muy positivamente. Entonces me gaste mas de la mitad de mi presupuesto en el mix, lo cual me alegra, pues quedo excelente! Gracias a Eric Shilling y a Kevin Killen. Luego para el mastering recibi el visto bueno y los precios de Vlado Meller (de Universal Mastering) y de Chris Gehringer (de Sterling Sound). Pero me recomendaron a Bob Ohlsson entonces decidi trabajar con el, confiando totalmente en la experiencia y recomendación de Eric (y también quede totalmente satisfecho).

Con todo eso no me quedo tanto para la producción del disco y el empaque. Busque una cantidad de opciones diferentes. Contacte companias en Suecia (donde vivo actualmente), en los USA, en Europa del este (por precio y cercanía) pero al final la mejor opción fue mandarlo a producir a China. No solo me salio a la mitad de precio de lo que me hubiera costado producirlo en Suecia (incluyendo el envio de China a Suecia), pero además el servicio fue excelente, muy eficiente y me dieron todos los extras que pedi por casi nada (texto de relieve en la portada ademas de que me empacaron cada EP individualmente en plastico). Como encontre los contactos en China, como hice con todos mis contactos en este proceso, a travez de la red. Contacte a dos compania en China y las dos me dieron excelente servicio y fueron bastante competitivos en precio y rapidéz de envio. Por si estas buscando donde imprimir tus discos, aca estan mis contactos. Estoy seguro que hay muchos mas, pero estos dos fueron con los que yo tuve contacto: Alice Yu en www.discturnkey.com y Alan Lz en www.disc-cn.com. Entonces fue asi que use recursos de afuera para la mayoría de la producción del EP, Con Solé, de Suecia a Nueva York, Miami, Nashville, China y de vuelta a Suecia.

Se que una de las limitaciones mas grandes que tengo es mi tiempo y que necesito de mucha ayuda para lograr hacer mi carrera musical un éxito. Pero trabajar solo 4 horas a la semana se me hace a mi un poco extremo. Afortunadamente hago lo que mas me gusta y por eso con gusto trabajo 60 horas a la semana, claro que se que no le conviene ni a mi salud ni a mi música. De a momentos se que es necesario. Pero yo realmente creo en el trabajar 32 horas de tiempo efectivo a la semana. Estos últimos meses me he estado acostando temprano para poder levantarme a las 5 de la mañana. Entonces desde las 5 hasta las 12 del dia alcanza a trabajar 6 y tanto horas de tiempo efectivo, y asi disfruto el resto de mi día de una forma mas relajada. Este método me ha dado mucho resultado. Cuando llegue a Miami en agosto una de las primeras cosas que hare sera comprarme el libro, "The 4 Hour Work Week (La semana de trabajo de 4 horas" para aprender mucho mas sobre el usar recursos de afuera para lograr que otros hagan mas de lo que no quiero estar haciendo, y asi dedicar mas de mi tiempo a lo que mas me gusta hacer y lo que hago mejor. Ademas que se que hay mucha gente que puede hacer mucho de lo que hago, mucho mejor que yo. Me dedico mas bien a escribir y cantar mis canciones.

I'll tell you the story about the EP first. My full budget for 1000 copies of our EP (7 songs in a full 4 color 6 side digipack, recorded, mixed and mastered professionally) was 6000 USD. It was recorded in house, which kept that costs at a minimum. Then I wanted to shoot for the best mixing and mastering that I could afford, because I know how important that step is and is something I knew very little about, so I wanted to put it into expert hands. So I let myself dream and asked, "If I could choose anyone to mix my songs who would that be?" I pulled down my favorite albums and artists and looked at who had done their mixes and came up with three names. So I contacted all three of them and sent them a rough mix of one song and asked if they had time, interest and what the cost would be. One wasn't available until a month later, but the other two responded very positively. So I spent half my budget on mixing, which I am very glad I did, they did a fantastic job! Thank you Eric Shilling and Kevin Killen. For the mastering I got OK's and prices from both Vlado Meller (Universal Mastering) and Chris Gehringer (from Sterling Sound). But I was recommended Bob Ohlsson by one of my mixers and I decided to go with him, because I fully trust Eric's advise (and also was totally satisfied).

So with that I didn't have so much left for the production of the CD and digipack. I looked into all kinds of different options. Having it produced in Sweden where I live, in the US, in eastern Europe (because of price and proximity) but what finally turned out being the best option was having it produced in China. Not only was it half the price of what it would cost me to have it done in Sweden (including shipping), but the service was excellent, very efficient and I got all the extras I wanted thrown in for practically nothing (deboss on the cover and each EP individually shrink wrapped). How did I go about finding the contacts in China, like I did everyone else, through the net. I contacted two companies and both were very professional and very competitive in pricing and speed. In cause your in the same boat, check them out. I am sure there are plenty more, but these are the two I had extended contact with: Alice Yu at www.discturnkey.com and Alan Lz at www.disc-cn.com. So one can say that I outsourced the majority of the work for the production of my EP, from Sweden to New York, Miami, Nashville, China and back.

I know that my time limitations are great and I need all the help I can get in order to make my musical career succeed. But four hours a week seems a bit too little for my taste. Fortunately I am doing what I love, so I gladly work 60 hours a week on my music, except that I know that is not healthy for me or my music. At times of course it is necessary. But I believe in working 32 hours a week of effective work time. These last couple months I have been going to bed early in order to get up at 5 am. So from 5 to 12 I put in a good 6 plus hours of effective work time into my music and then I can enjoy the rest of the day in a more leisurely fashion. This habit has proven very effective for me. When I get to the US one of the first things I am going to do is buy the book, "The 4 Hour Work Week" and really learn about how to outsource more of what I don't want to be doing, so that I have more time for that which I love and do best. Also because I know that there are people who can do much of what I do much better than I can. I'll stick to writing and singing my songs.
