Today John & Amy popped by to meet Brooks. Unfortunately, he didn't last long for the Longs and he needed to eat shortly after they got there but it was great to see them. We'll have to make a playdate with them when he's not screaming. 
Best news of the past 10 months is I got to eat sushi tonight — small victories, folks. Ellie & Elliott took us to 9Style Sushi and it was fabulous. Steph came to meet us and hung out with the little one once we made it back home. He was being a bit of a drama king and wasn't the mellow man he normally is but she didn't seem to mind. It's hard to believe Brooks has only been around for 2 and a half weeks when I feel like I've known him forever.

What a difference three years makes...

Don't look too close.  The blanket that the amazingly beautiful baby is laying on, is one I made.  I know you can't really tell if the craftsmanship is good, but who cares!  Look at how cute the baby is!  I don't know whose baby that is, but dang, that's the best looking baby I've ever seen.  Hope everyone is having a great AND SAFE holiday weekend!

Amy's back at The Duke. And I REALLY don't want to go back to work.

De acordo com testemunhas no local, a cantora foi arrastada do bar pelo seu pai, que a levou para casa. «Podia ouvir-se Amy a pedir para que a deixassem apanhar ar», afirmou uma testemunha no local. Esta rapariga não pára de supreender, de facto. Mas entre ela e Britney Spears, prefiro-a a ela ... não sei porquê, mas Britney Spears possui algo "abandalhado" em si, enquanto que Amy Winehouse tudo faz especificamente para provocar. Não que apoie ... mas que é curioso, é.

It's expensive.  My tank costs X amount to fill yesterday.  It's expensive.  It costs alot of money.  Whew.  Okay, well, later!

Because I want to bring a new angle to my gas conversations, I believe I need a Vespa.  It would add a solid paragraph to chats about gas.  I brought it up a few weeks ago to my husband.  He says ABSOLUTELY not.  It's a death trap he says. 

I was walking along the docks the other day and saw this Vespa and became VERY excited.  Right after a total stranger snapped this picture, I made sweet, tender love to the scooter.  And yes, the scooter called me the very next day.  So honorable.

I hate driving the "Earth Murderer" when I'm alone.

Yes, we let the 3 year old drive.  How do you think I make it to the liquor store everyday?  I take a strong stand against driving drunk, but Mama's gotta have her sauce.

I go places solo a few times a month and it's a great idea for me to have something smaller.  It's a great idea for Earth.  For human kind.  And how cute for me to have on a back pack while driving the Vespa.  No car seats or noise.  Just the wind... I'm totally smitten with the Vespa.

In what seems like another lifetime a million years ago, I spent a little over five years in Des Moines. The circumstances that brought me there were not the best, and so I was generally miserable and always had one foot out the door. Despite all of that, I still managed to put roots down and made the most of my time living there. Enough years had now passed that I was eager to return - not only to revisit my old stomping grounds, but to show my husband and daughter this previously ignored part of my personal history.

Our trip got off to a little bit of a rocky start. What was supposed to be a five and a half hour trip took almost nine, as we powered through construction, holiday traffic (it was the Friday before Memorial Day), and had to make frequent stops for Nina. Why on earth didn't we just wait until Saturday morning, you ask? I have just five words for you: The Des Moines Farmers' Market. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the best market I've ever been to - looking forward to it was what got me through every week when I lived there. It has consistently been rated one of the top ten best markets nationwide for as long as I can remember, and it deserves every accolade and more.

It was cold and drizzling, but that didn't deter Amy and I. We loaded a bleary-eyed Mario and crazy hyper Nina into the car, and we were off. Even with the rain, the market was crowded. I made a bee line for the first falafel vendor I could find; my Saturday breakfast ritual satisfied, it was time to get down to business. Amy and I both love to cook, so we immediately conferred on a tentative menu for the next five days as we drifted from one stand to the next. The market absolutely hummed with activity, and Mario and Nina were enjoying themselves. We ducked into Java Joe's, my second favorite thing that I missed from my days in Des Moines. Forget Starbucks - this place is what I silently measure all coffee shops against.

After the obligatory market and coffee house stops, we allowed the rest of the week to just unfold at it's own pace. After all, we were really there to visit Amy and her husband, and to say goodbye. Every street walked upon, every meal shared, led to memories and laughter. We made all our favorites: quinoa tabbouleh, grilled asparagus, pasta with homemade sauce that bubbled for hours on the stove.

Nina finally had a real yard to run around in, and we set her loose.

She also finally got to spend some time with her beloved bot bots, Ben and Coco.

I don't know how much they enjoyed the mud stew she made in their water dish, but they humored her nonetheless.

And my husband finally realized that magical, intangible hold that Des Moines has over me. I know most of it has to do with the fact that Amy lives there, but Des Moines really is a great place to live. I have no idea where we may end up if or when we ever leave North Carolina, but I know that if Des Moines is an option, this time I would be there of my own accord. We miss you, Amy!

No other rules or instructions.  Are my kids under stimulated?  This is just one more thing to add to the "List of Things That Keep Me Living Under Tremendous Guilt."  I'll write it under "I let them eat more than 1 Popsicle a day.  I also cave and let them eat Popsicles before 9am sometimes."  Only on days when mama needs a little more time with "the only one who really understands me", formally known as the computer.

The guilt thing is such a bitch.  I am learning to shake it off and move on.  Whoever came up with the idea of starting over every day, was a genius!  God?  Yeah, He is super smart.  He's also not big on holding things over my head.  That would be credited to the son of a bitch that built those horrible roads through the mountains...the devil.  He's in construction. My husband told me. 

My life goal is to become this person that I see in my mind's eye.  That person has patience and thinks before she speaks and has manageable hair and is physically more flexible. 

God loves me the way I am.  Junk and all.  God wants me to be that patient, flexible person with great hair, because I want to change out of love for others.   I don't want to be those things out of selfish gain.  I mean, my husband would LOVE for me to be able pull some karma sutra stuff out of my bag of tricks. How much more sexy would that be if I had manageable hair to boot!    

Manageable hair is a bit of a stretch.  But I swear God is encouraging me to be more flexible.  And patient.
