How does Estelle look?

Je suis sure que tout le monde la connait celle-la, ca va faire des mois que cette chanson est numéro 1 dans les charts anglais:

Je kiffe cette chanteuse depuis ses débuts intimistes il y a quelques années, et on va dire que la pauvre, n'a pas eu beaucoup de succes. Il a donc fallu qu'elle s'en aille aux USA, pour devenir super pote avec John Legend (qui est son fan numéro 1) et un certain Kanye West... Et depuis, cette chanson fait sensation des deux cotés de l'Atlantique. GOOD FOR HER!!

Dieu que c'est bon d'écouter autre chose que de la Kpop de temps en temps! XD

Haha so Jay-Z killed Glastonbury. Whole thing's up on youtube (go find it yourself, I'm not mining youtube for links!) n it's worth watchin. Smart move starting off his set with Wonderwall, although he could've at least been bothered learning the words haha. Whatever, sick performance n I got more respect for Jigga havin seen it. Lovin his verse over American Boy (London Bridges are falling down/not bridges but britches when Jigga's in town), well lookin forward to an official remix of that comin out (should be soon I hear..)

Check his appearance on Jonathan Ross last Friday as well (pt1/pt2). Good interview, Jay looks a little lost at times but he comes back at it pretty well. Love the way he skips around the Beyonce questions. Also, def pickin up a pair of those glasses haha

Shit I've never been the biggest Jay-Z fan but he's been on good form since American Gangster. Mr. Carter is sick n I'm still playin that regularly (bonus- check the Wale remix below, more on boy later). Blueprint always stays one of my favourite albums of that period but damn I'm gonna have to go back n relisten to some of Hov's earlier stuff for re-education

So I have to say, though I LOVE makeup, I tend to stick to the same brands (Rosebud Salve, Body Shop) and shades (Nude, sheer), if ain't broke don't fix it, know what I mean? So it is nothing short of a miracle that I announce I have NEW favorite lip gloss. (Perhaps even more exciting than a favorite summer song.....right Estelle's "American Boy" and MGMT's "Time to Pretend" are duking it out...)

Anyway, not only is my favorite gloss sweet smelling and oh-so-soft on my kisser, it's only $7.95!

While in Paris I asked people I met what impressions they had of Americans. I asked everyone I could meet, from business owners, to backpackers at the Metro station, people from all over Europe chimed in. And in their opinions, the top three words I heard used to describe Americans were stupid, arrogant, and ignorant.

Now I was able to get such candid responses because I did not reveal to them that I myself was an American. What I wanted to know was why people thought that. Usually the only impression Europeans have of Americans are our politicians in this case President Bush, and tourists.

It's great enough that President Bush can't pronounce nuclear, I heard plenty of that, but the fact that Bush was seen a as a belligerent man with no regard for the international system. He was seen as a warmonger who was doing anything he could to get oil. People in Europe truly despised the very essence of his being. They asked how Americans could choose such a president.

Now for the other part of Americans that made up their impression; tourists. Generally American tourists who visit Europe stick to the "touristy" areas of cities and rarely venture far away from city centers. Now the tourists who make it to Paris know very little French aside from Bonjour and Merci. Now I'm sure you have been annoyed when you attempted to speak to someone, maybe in a store, or on the street and they did not speak any English. You were genuinely frustrated and might have made a comment along the lines of "Learn English, you're in America"

Well, that's how they feel, "learn French, you're in France!" Americans enter the stores, and metro stations asking for directions in English as French citizens do their best to speak a foreign language to help out a tourist. Americans it seems believe that they should make no effort to learn another language and expect everyone to speak English, even in France.

This is where the perception of arrogance comes off, the stupidity well... you can guess where that comes from. I mean the man choked on a pretzel for gods sake, how do you choke on a pretzel? As for ignorant, well many Americans don't know who represents them. How do you expect them to know who the president of France is.

Now, after I revealed to them that I myself was from the U.S. they were impressed. Perhaps because I was actually speaking to them in French and Spanish, and knew who Ségolène Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy were. Never the less we proceeded to have a conversation about American politics and it shames me to say that they know more about our politics than some of my friends.

My language abilities (however poor they might be) and knowledge of world politics impressed everyone I met. Everyone seemed to think that Americans were fat, lazy, uneducated people. I wonder why.

When you travel abroad, remember you are an ambassador. Make them realize that Americans are better than their reputation makes them out to be.
