Just bought my first track from Amazonmp3.com. Finally they have song previews that I can play in Firefox on my iMac. For the longest time the tracks were Windows media files [or something else non OS-X-friendly]. :P Looks like they moved to Flash or something.

P.S. If it's not Flash, I apologize in advance. Some irrationally irate commenter on my blog post about Amazon Unbox (from 2 years ago!) had a tizzy when I mistakenly said Unbox was a Flash app. >:(

In my previous post, I mention Amazon MP3 briefly. It’s a known fact that iTunes is the leade

In my previous post, I mention Amazon MP3 briefly. It's a known fact that iTunes is the leader in online distribution of music. That's all well and good and they've definitely changed the face of how music is purchased by consumers. My beef with iTunes is that in order to play [most of] purchased tracks is to have an iPod. Now, I own an iPod and will probably never use anything else (it's that good). However, I like to stream music from my computer to my TiVo (and any other device and future device that supports the MP3 format). Well, iTunes is AAC format . . . so, no TiVo or otherwise (at least not easily).

I say all that to say this: Amazon.com has an online store with high bitrate (i.e. great sounding) files that are totally unprotected. That means you can move them to whatever player you want, whatever computer you want . . . it's all good. My thoughts are also on the automotive future (if I ever have the dough to get a new car!). Online hard drives are on the market, most of which support MP3.

Aaaand, the Amazon store's pricing is on par with iTunes if not cheaper in many cases.

Now, I'll still probably buy my favorite artists on CD so I have the prisine quality if I need it as well as a backup. But those odds and ends that I have ringing in my head . . . well, 89 to 99 cents aint bad . . .

Radiohead continues to play the free album that keeps on giving.

Radiohead will perform its new album, "In Rainbows," in its entirety during a pre-taped, hour-long set that will premiere New Year's Eve on TV and the Internet.

The event will air on Al Gore's Current TV and Current.com starting 12 a.m. ET on Dec. 31, and will repeat three times throughout the next day.-Billboard

Alley Insider pointed out an early win by Amazon's MP3 store. On Tuesday, Jan. 1, In Rainbows goes on sale in CD format in North America and also Amazon's MP3 store before iTunes. This could be a glimpse of things to come in the digital battle ground.

Today, Amazon announced the opening of it’s digital music store, which will be the fine purvey

Today, Amazon announced the opening of it's digital music store, which will be the fine purveyors of high quality 256kbps DRM free mp3's. This means that the general public can now buy high quality, fully legal music, which can be played on any commercially available digital music player, burned to a CD, copied, moved, or whatever else you care to do with it.

Albums will range from $5.99 to $9.99, with the Top 100 albums going for a paltry (when compared to the exorbitant prices of CDs) $8.99. Individual songs go for 89c to 99c, with the Top 100 songs going for 89c.

The reason that I'm excited about this is the twofold. Fold number one being that people are finally realising that DRM only hurts people who buy music legally. It does not and will never prevent piracy. The second fold being that the same people are finally realising that the reason people illegally copy music is because the artificially inflated price of €20 for an album is just plain crazy.

Unfortunately, the store is only available in the US at the moment, but if all goes well, I can't see why the wouldn't roll out a worldwide store soon.

Check out Engadget's article here, and Amazon's brand spanking new store here.
