Zawahri mocked George W. Bush's decision to suspend troop withdrawals from Iraq this summer, saying the U.S. president was scared of admitting defeat and was trying to pass the "problem" on to his successor instead.

"What the American invasion of Iraq has reached, today, after five years, is ... failure and defeat," Zawahri said in the tape posted on a website used by Islamist groups.

"The American troops, if they leave will lose everything and if they stay will bleed to death. This is what Bush has chosen for his army and his people, who elected him twice."

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki returned to Baghdad onSaturday after spending several days in the city of Mosul andsurrounding Nineveh province to supervise the crackdown.

Many gunmen from Sunni Islamist al Qaeda have regrouped inNineveh after being pushed out of other areas. The U.S.military says Mosul is al Qaeda's last major urban strongholdin Iraq.

Lieutenant-General Riyadh Jalal Tawfiq, head of theIraqi-led offensive that began a week ago, said 1,068 suspectshad been detained so far.

"This operation will last until we finish off all theterrorist remnants and outlaws," he said.

Votre persécution à notre encontre s'est manifestée au Liban et ailleurs et c'est pour cela que vinrent les événements du 11 septembre, ceux qui les précédèrent ainsi que ceux qui les suivirent.

Dorénavant prêtez-moi votre attention car j'ai quelque chose à vous dire:

Une précieuse occasion se présente devant les justes parmi vous et ceux qui veulent connaître la réalité de la question palestinienne pour justement en savoir plus sur ce sujet puisque les juifs célèbrent en présence des dirigeants occidentaux le soixantième anniversaire de la création de leur état.

Une célébration qui a beaucoup de signification mais je ne vais en citer, succinctement, que trois d'entres-elles:

Premièrement: Cet événement prouve clairement qu'avant soixante ans l'état d'Israël n'existait pas, mais il fut crée sur la terre spoliée de la Palestine avec le force des armes, et ceci prouve l'authenticité de notre revendication selon laquelle la Palestine est notre terre et que les israéliens sont des envahisseurs, des occupants qu'il faut combattre.

Deuxièmement:Cet événement prouve que la majorité de vos médias ont abandonné l'objectivité et le professionnalisme s'agissant de traiter cette question ou d'autres semblables, vu que les responsables (des médias) vous ont induits en erreur pendant soixante ans, inversant la réalité en montrant, injustement, les juifs envahisseurs occupants en tant que victimes et les palestiniens oppressés qui revendiquent leurs terres comme de sanguinaires terroristes. C'est là la preuve du danger des médias de masse qui jouent le rôle de prestidigitateurs en déformant les vérités et en fabriquant une opinion générale induite en erreur afin de pousser les nations occidentales à participer, injustement, à une guerre contre nous.

L'envahissement de l'Irak en est la preuve, où vos médias ont diffusé les mensonges du chef de la Maison Blanche et sa clique, des médias qui subissent l'influence du lobby sioniste en montrant les choses à l'encontre de ce qu'elles sont en réalité pour rendre service aux israéliens.

Troisièmement: La présence des dirigeants occidentaux aux côtés des juifs lors de ces célébrations prouve que l'Occident soutient l'injuste occupation juive de nos terres, cela prouve qu'ils sont dans la même tranchée que celle des israéliens, c'est-à-dire contre nous, chose qui fut confirmée sur le terrain en envoyant leurs troupes au sud du Liban en soutien aux juifs.

Les politiciens occidentaux vivent toujours avec les mentalités féodales du moyen âge: persécutant les autres en occupant leurs terres, tuant les libres parmi eux et pillant leurs richesses comme cela a été clairement prouvé par Bush et Blair qui envahirent l'Irak, volèrent son pétrole et couvrirent son peuple d'ignominie.

Quand bien même la Grande-Bretagne permit aux juifs d'occuper la Palestine par le biais de la promesse de Belfort, et quand bien même l'Organisation des Nations Unies décida de leur octroyer la majorité de la Palestine, nous n'avons cure de ces décisions qui ne nous concernent point, car celui qui ne possédait pas donna à celui qui ne méritait pas.

L'Organisation des Nations Unies n'est-elle pas qu'un instrument que vous utilisez parmi tant d'autres? Les négociations de paix ne se font-elles pas que pour berner les naïfs? Et les promesses de Bush concernant la création d'un état palestinien digne de ce nom, ne sont-elles pas semblables à celles de Ourkoub (symbole de ceux qui ne tiennent pas leurs promesse dans la tradition arabe N.d.T)? Cela dit, le Jihad est obligatoire pour libérer la Palestine.

Quant à ce qui suit,

Nous comprenons, donc, que les gens aux personnalités déséquilibrées ont tendance à bafouer les droits d'autrui, à prendre injustement leur argent par escroquerie ou par vol armé, mais si ceux-là arrivent au pouvoir la catastrophe sera plus grave et son ampleur sera proportionnelle à la différence entre l'état et le gang armé.

De nos jours, le terrorisme renié et le vol armé sont commis par le commandant de la plus puissante machine militaire qu'ait connue l'humanité, ce qui rend la catastrophe non pas territoriale ou régionale, mais mondiale; mais malgré les grandes souffrances et peines que nous subissons dans la guerre que vous menez contre nous, nous sommes endurants et sincères lorsque nous combattons nos ennemis.

Mais ce qui nous donne la nausée, c'est qu'après toutes ces tueries, ces destructions, ces pillages, ces vols et cette bassesse, vos politiciens se permettent de parler de valeurs, cela est insupportable, n'accumulez-donc pas deux injustices.

Et si vous persistez à piller et à voler vous trouverez ce qui vous déplaira; ayez un peu de pudeur et cessez de mentir en parlant de valeurs.
Je vais vous donner des exemples du vécu palestinien pour vous éclaircir sur la question et pour révéler la nature fallacieuse de vos valeurs: juger avec le deux poids deux mesures dans la même crise est l'une de vos caractéristiques, vous classez les organisations palestiniennes parmi les organisations terroristes, vous les punissez et vous les boycottez, mais quelle était votre position lorsque les israéliens tuaient les vrais civils, femmes et enfants soit avec les voitures piégées comme à Jaffa, à Haïfa ou ailleurs ou pis encore lorsque les organisations sionistes ont massacré les paysans palestiniens, les ont terrorisés et contraints à l'exil pour s'approprier leurs terres?

Un deux poids deux mesure qui s'est avéré dans votre attitude vis-à-vis de Begin, savez-vous qui est Begin? Le chef d'une des organisations sionistes injustes, Begin le monstre du massacre de Dir Yassin, Begin l'éventreur des femmes enceintes dans le massacre de Dir Yassine.

Y a-t-il un terrorisme plus horrible et plus méprisable? N'est-ce pas là le summum de la criminalité et le fond de la bassesse? Est-ce qu'un homme peut tuer une paysanne qui ne connaît point le combat et ne s'intéresse guère à lui, sans parler d'éventrer une femme enceinte?

La simple vue de ces crimes - inimaginables n'était-ce les archives qui le prouve - feraient se dresser des cheveux gris sur la tête, et dire que les israéliens s'en félicitent et disant que sans le massacre de Dir Yassine les palestiniens n'auraient pas fuit leurs terres pour les leur laisser. Et quelle fut l'attitude de l'Occident vis-à-vis de Begin? Au lieu de le punir pour ses crimes ils le reconnurent autant que premier ministre, et comme si ça ne leur suffisait pas ils le récompensèrent avec le prix Nobel de la paix.

Et les massacres ne se sont pas arrêté à Dir Yassin, mais se sont poursuivis, comme celui que nous vivons aujourd'hui à Gaza au vu et au su du monde entier: un million et demi d'êtres humains sous l'embargo assassin qui meurent à petit feu pour cause de malnutrition et d'absence de médicaments.

Et qui plus est, vos politiciens obligent le dirigeant égyptien à resserrer l'étau de son coté pour étrangler les faibles, des femmes et des enfants pour leur majorité.

Dites-moi quelle est la différence entre vos valeurs dans votre ignorance contemporaine et les valeurs de Haman (ministre de Pharaon N.d.T) qui aida Pharaon dans l'assassinat des enfants des fils d'Israël en Egypte?

En conclusion, n'est pas blâmable celui qui défend ses enfants et combat ceux qui appliquent l'injuste politique de Pharaon. Nous continuerons, avec la permission d'Allah, notre combat contre les israéliens et leurs alliés afin que la vérité triomphe et que justice soit rendue aux opprimés.

Nous n'allons céder, avec la permission d'Allah, aucun pouce de la Palestine tant que vivra sur terre un seul honnête Musulman.

The new threats came as government officials said that more than three million homes had been destroyed by Monday’s earthquake, and more than 12 million had been damaged. The government again raised the death toll, to nearly 29,000.

The resulting humanitarian crisis is the largest in China in decades, and in the process of covering the developments, Chinese news organizations have been testing strict government censorship in new ways — and even winning some concessions.

With the scale of the disaster becoming ever more apparent, the United Nations announced that it would provide a grant of $7 million from an emergency response fund “to help meet the most urgent humanitarian requirements.”

The danger of flooding on Saturday was so severe that some rescue workers had to abandon their efforts, at least temporarily, to find people buried beneath rubble in Beichuan, one of the hardest-hit counties. Such interruptions could doom the relatively few who could be expected to be alive under debris.

The greatest threat of flooding came from a lake in the far north of Sichuan Province that had already begun to overflow because of a blockage in the Qingzhu River, according to Xinhua, the official news agency, which cited experts at the province’s land management department. Heavy rains began pounding large parts of Sichuan on Saturday night, adding to the threat.

A rise of only 6 to 10 feet will cause the lake to “threaten more than 2,000 people who are staying in shelters after the earthquake downstream,” one expert said, adding that it was inevitable that debris would continue to flow down, adding to the blockage.

Early on Sunday, a tremor with a magnitude of 6.0 struck northern Sichuan, one of the largest quakes since last Monday. Other tremors over the past several days have caused new landslides.

Relief officials in the county where the flood threat is highest, Qingchuan, have begun evacuating people and are considering blasting the embankment to divert water from the overflowing lake. “We were informed that the Qingchuan government is requesting urgent evacuation because the water level of the dammed lake has reached 70 meters,” or 230 feet, said a worker at the control center of the Guangyuan Petrol Company who gave his name as Mr. Wang. He said workers were being evacuated.

Farther south, closer to the epicenter, people around Beichuan, a town that was flattened by the 7.9-magnitude earthquake, also began fleeing because of flood warnings related to a choked river. Thousands of people are buried under rubble in the town, the county seat of Beichuan, and it is the scene of one of the most intense rescue efforts in the disaster zone. But on Saturday soldiers, rescue workers and medics had to stop their work and seek higher ground or leave the area. People who were fleeing described soldiers from the army heeding the flood warning, packing up and driving down from the mountains.

There were unconfirmed reports that the immediate danger had passed by evening and that rescue operations may have resumed.

Landslides continue to pose one of the greatest threats across the mountainous terrain of Sichuan. Daily aftershocks and tremors — at least 168 significant ones since Monday — set off new slides. At least 13 rivers and lakes have been dammed up by the quake, the state-run China National Radio reported Saturday, citing an official at the Land and Resource Ministry.

People in the disaster zone have had to grapple with the rising threat of flooding. On Wednesday, the top economic planning body in China issued a report saying that the quake had damaged 391 reservoirs. The same day, 2,000 soldiers were sent to inspect cracks in the Zipingpu Dam, upriver from the hard-hit town of Dujiangyan, and drain water from the reservoir.

Experts outside China say many of the threatened dams and reservoirs were built along the well-recognized Longmenshan fault, and that the dams might have sustained damage that could make them fail weeks later.

Officials said Saturday that the death toll had risen to 28,881. Earlier in the week, they said it could reach 50,000. Officials said Saturday that 12.5 million homes had been damaged, and 3.1 million had collapsed.

President Hu Jintao has urged rescuers to continue searching for survivors. Some were pulled out on Saturday, but medical experts say the chances of people living in rubble decrease significantly after the first 72 hours.

The Ministry of Health said Saturday that it had found no epidemics in the disaster areas, Xinhua reported. Hospitals in Sichuan had received more than 116,000 patients, 14 percent of whom were severely injured, the ministry added. More than 34,000 medical workers and disease control staff members are in Sichuan, and they are being given pamphlets that tell them how to disinfect food and drinking water and how to handle bodies.

Military Commissions officials confirmed plans for the first war court prosecution seeking execution as the ultimate penalty, the Houston Chronicle noted. Besides the accusations related to the Sept. 11attack, they face charges such as murder, attacking civilians, attacking civilian objects, terrorism and providing material support for terrorism.

Threat on non-Muslims in Arabian Peninsula

DUBAI (Agencies): An al-Qaeda Yemeni wing threatened attacks on Thursday across the Arabian Peninsula against non-Muslim foreigners including tourists and journalists. “We warn you not to enter the Arabian Peninsula under any name or cover be it as tourists, diplomats, scientists, experts or journalists; you will be a primary target for the mujahideen,” al-Qaeda in the South of the Arabian Peninsula said in the editorial of its e-magazine. “We stand absolved from (the rights) of any infidel who has entered the Arabian Peninsula. (Targeting) their blood and money are religiously right,” it said in reference to non-Muslim foreigners, whom al-Qaeda calls infidels. Al-Qaeda-linked militants in neighbouring Saudi Arabia have waged attacks on Western targets but appear to have been weakened due to a security crackdown. Yemen has seen a surge in small attacks on government buildings and foreign embassies in recent weeks.

In April, an al-Qaeda-linked group said it fired three mortar rounds at a complex housing Americans and other Westerners in Sanaa. No one was hurt. The attack was aimed at expelling infidels from the Arabian Peninsula, home to Islam’s holiest sites, it said. In March, a school near the US embassy was hit by mortars injuring 13 girls and five Yemeni soldiers in an attack Washington said was aimed at its mission. Al-Qaeda in the South of the Arabian Peninsula said it would not uphold any treaties between the government of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and any other country. “Our sheikh ... Osama bin Laden had made you an offer but you have ignored the truce,” it said. “No one can seek to be secure unless through permission from the sheikh of Islam, the renovator, Osama bin Laden,” it said.

In April 2004, bin Laden offered Europeans a truce if they withdrew troops from Muslim nations.

Meanwhile, al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden said in a new audio message released Friday that the terrorist organization will continue its holy war against Israel and its allies until it liberates Palestine.
The terrorist leader’s third message this year came as US President George W. Bush was wrapping up his visit to Israel to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Jewish state.

Bin Laden said the fight for the Palestinian cause was the most important factor driving al-Qaeda’s war with the West and fueled 19 Muslims to carry out the suicide attacks against the US on Sept 11.
“To Western nations ... this speech is to understand the core reason of the war between our civilization and your civilizations. I mean the Palestinian cause,” said bin Laden in the close to 10 minute message.

“The Palestinian cause is the major issue for my (Islamic) nation. It was an important element in fueling me from the beginning and the 19 others with a great motive to fight for those subjected to injustice and the oppressed,” added bin Laden.

The authenticity of the message could not be verified, but it was posted on a Web site commonly used by al-Qaeda and the voice resembled the one in past bin Laden audiotapes. IntelCenter, a US group that monitors al-Qaeda message traffic, said the audio message was accompanied by a photo of bin Laden wearing a white robe and turban next to a picture of the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. It was unclear when the photo of bin Laden was taken.

The al-Qaeda leader said the Western media managed to brainwash people over the past 60 years by “portraying the Jewish invaders, the occupiers of our land, as the victims while it portrayed us as the terrorists.” “Sixty years ago, the Israeli state didn’t exist. Instead, it was established on the land of Palestine raped by force,” said bin Laden. “Israelis are occupying invaders whom we should fight.”

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Arye Mekel dismissed bin Laden’s new message. “We do not relate or pay attention to the words of this terrorist lunatic,” he said. “The time has come for him to be apprehended and pay for his crimes.” Bin Laden criticized Western leaders like the US president who participated in Israel’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Bush feted Israel on Thursday and predicted that its 120th birthday would find it alongside a Palestinian state and in an all-democratic neighborhood free of today’s oppression, restrictions on freedom and extremist Muslim movements.

Authorities in France, Germany and the Netherlands on Friday detained at least 10 people suspected of helping to fund al-Qaeda-linked militants with roots in Uzbekistan, officials said. One suspect was detained in Germany, another in the Netherlands, with the rest detained in France, said a senior French police official who was only authorized to discuss the arrests on condition of anonymity. The suspects’ nationalities were not given but officials said they were Turkic-speaking. French police suspect they collected funds for the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, a militant group said by the United States to have close ties to al-Qaeda. The senior official described the arrests as “preventative” because the funds thought to have been collected were not known to have been used to carry out terror attacks.

After efforts to pressure the Government in Sudan over Darfur failed again in the U.N. Security Council, the United States, acting in concert with a newly formed League of Democracies, applied stiff diplomatic and economic pressure that caused the government of Sudan to agree to a multinational peacekeeping force, with NATO countries providing logistical and air support, to stop the genocide that had made a mockery of the world’s repeated declaration that we would “never again” tolerant such inhumanity. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Senator John McCain declared on Thursday that most American troops will be home from Iraq by 2013 and that Iraq will be a functioning democracy with only “spasmodic’’ episodes of violence, a striking departure from his refusal so far to set a date for U.S. withdrawal.

In a speech in the heart of Ohio, a major battleground state in the fall election, Mr. McCain set forth a sweeping, extraordinarily positive vision of what the world will look like 2013, when he says he will have been in the White House for four years.

“By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom,’’ Mr. McCain said at the Columbus Convention Center. “The Iraq War has been won. Iraq is a functioning democracy, although still suffering from the lingering effects of decades of tyranny and centuries of sectarian tension. Violence still occurs, but it is spasmodic and much reduced.’’

The United States, Mr. McCain added, “maintains a military presence there, but a much smaller one, and it does not play a direct combat role.’’

During his primary battle, Mr. McCain frequently accused Mitt Romney of setting a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq, a charge Mr. Romney denied.

In comments to reporters after his speech, Mr. McCain insisted that his speech should not be interpreted as setting a date for withdrawal, and that he was simply projecting victory in Iraq. He took issue with a reporter who characterized his speech as a “magic carpet ride,’’ saying: “I don’t think it has anything to do with fantasy, I think it has everything to do with setting goals and achieving.’’

In Afghanistan, he said, an increase in actionable intelligence will have led to the capture or death of Osama bin Laden, and “there is no longer any place in the world al Qaeda can consider a safe haven.’’

In a sign of more disarray in the U.S. prosecution of Guantanamo inmates, a military judge last week barred Brig. Gen. Tom Hartmann, top legal adviser to the Convening Authority, from involvement in a prominent case at the prison. Hartmann had been described by one U.S. military witness as demanding "sexy" cases to try, "with blood on them."

Les messages diffusés par la nébuleuse de Ben Laden sont sans ambiguïté: "Transformons les deux pays les plus sûrs d'Europe en enfer, comme l'enfer irakien ou afghan»" disait l'un d'eux. "L'heure a sonné pour les combattants de la foi. Ils doivent faire entendre leur voix", affirmait un autre message.

"Nous prenons toutes ces menaces au sérieux", confie un membre des services de sécurité de la Confédération:

"Nous sommes en alerte et nous suivons de très près ces forums djihadistes. C'est par eux que les agents de Ben Laden réveillent les cellules dormantes. La situation est grave même si parfois, des personnes frustrées se cachent derrière ces sites."

Jürg Bühler, du Service d'analyse et de prévention de la police fédérale (Fedpol), explique:

Des attentats contre la fête du football ont été évoqués sur la Toile, comme ce fut le cas en 2006 lors de la Coupe du monde en Allemagne. A l'époque, des actes terroristes avaient même été préparés contre des trains. Mais les islamistes y ont renoncé, estimant que les mesures de sécurité étaient tellement élevées qu'ils n'avaient aucune chance de réussir.

Mais qu'est-ce qui pousserait al-Qaïda à s'attaquer à deux pays neutres comme la Suisse et l'Autriche? Tout d'abord, la nébuleuse terroriste fait parler d'elle là où il y a un événement planétaire. L'Euro 2008, comme les Jeux olympiques de Pékin, c'est une manifestation rêvée pour semer la terreur. Elle sera couverte par des milliers de journalistes, et les matchs seront retransmis dans le monde entier, note un spécialiste.

Ce n'est pas tout. Al-Qaïda a aussi des comptes à régler avec la Suisse et l'Autriche. Les islamistes reprochent par exemple à l'Helvétie son islamophobie. Sur Al Jazeera, la chaîne arabe d'information continue, et dans la presse de ces pays, l'initiative lancée par le parti xénophobe UDC contre les minarets n'est pas passée inaperçue.

Quant au cas autrichien, il est beaucoup plus grave pour les terroristes. "L'Autriche doit se retirer d'Afghanistan", tonnait un message, en rappelant que le pays est engagé dans la guerre contre les talibans. Vienne envoie quatre ou cinq officiers en rotation au sein de l'état-major de la Force internationale d'assistance à la sécurité de l'Otan.

Cela dit, les milieux policiers ne sont pas complètement surpris par les appels à la violence diffusés ces dernières semaines sur les sites d'Al Qaeda. Le dernier rapport de l'Office fédéral de la police qui est sorti en avril tirait d'ailleurs la sonnette d'alarme:

"La Suisse est située dans la zone exposée au risque djihadiste constituée par l'Europe occidentale, mais n'est cependant pas une cible première du terrorisme islamiste, même si des djihadistes la considèrent comme un 'Etat de croisés'."

"Tout ce que je peux vous dire, c'est que nous avons mis le paquet."

Interpol, ainsi que les services secrets des pays qualifiés pour l'Eurofoot, sont aussi sur le qui-vive. Du coup, le budget de la grande messe du foot concernant la sécurité a explosé, même si les montants restent top secret: "On articule aucun chiffre à ce sujet", souligne Pascale Vögeli, porte-parole de l'UEFA Euro 2008:

"C'est une de nos priorités. L'UEFA s'occupe du volet sécuritaire autour des stades. Nous avons mis en place notre propre service dans ces périmètres, mais aussi dans les hôtels des équipes et autour des terrains d'entraînement.

"Quant à la menace terroriste, il faut voir cela avec les autorités politiques. Tout ce que je peux vous dire, c'est que nous avons mis le paquet."

Du côté de la police fédérale (Fedpol), l'équipe est bien rodée et la coordination sécuritaire dépasse les frontières de la Suisse. La Confédération va investir 35,7 millions de francs pour la sécurité.

Billetterie, bénévoles, ambassades: appels à la vigilance tous azimuts

Et tous les détenteurs de billets doivent montrer patte blanche pour entrer dans les stades. Chacun a dû indiquer son numéro de passeport pour obtenir un sésame. Et si le spectateur vient des zones à risques du Proche-Orient, il ne recevra son visa et son billet qu'après de longues vérifications. Les ambassadeurs suisses à travers le monde ont reçu des instructions allant dans ce sens.

Des appels à la vigilance ont également été lancés aux équipes de sécurité des aéroports suisses et autrichiens. Idem pour les bénévoles de l'Euro 2008, qui ont reçu une formation de base dans la gestion de crise. Ils seront capables d'aider le public à se déplacer en cas d'alerte à la bombe notamment.

Quant à l'armée suisse, elle pourra fournir jusqu'à 15 000 militaires, mais ne sera sollicitée qu'à titre subsidiaire. Et les pays voisins des deux organisateurs ont un plan d'alerte sur la table. En Suisse, comme en Autriche, la priorité de l'Euro 2008, c'est bel et bien la sécurité... après le foot, tout de même.

Les deux otages autrichiens d'Al Qaeda Maghreb compliquent la donne

Les autres épines dans le pied autrichien sont Andrea Kloiber, 44 ans, et Wolfgang Ebner, 51 ans, qui ont été enlevés le 22 février en Tunisie par Al Qaeda Maghreb Islamique alors qu'ils se promenaient dans le désert.

"Ce n'est pas prudent de ne pas résoudre cette prise d'otage et d'organiser une grande manifestation sportive", indique une source sécuritaire à Alger, qui travaille sur le terrorisme islamiste. "Officiellement Vienne refuse de négocier. Mais officieusement, les Autrichiens ont entamé des négociations avec al-Qaïda."

Notre source algérienne en veut aussi pour preuve l'envoi au Mali, où les deux otages seraient retenus, d'Anton Prohaska, un ancien ambassadeur autrichien. En outre, Vienne a pris langue avec la Libye pour trouver une solution alors que l'Algérie et la Tunisie font la sourde oreille.

Dans ces deux pays, c'est même un tabou. En Tunisie, on ne parle pas de cette prise d'otages. Pas bon pour le tourisme. Quant à Alger, il a fait savoir que les deux Autrichiens n'ont pas été enlevés sur son territoire. Et qu'en plus, ils ne s'y trouvent pas.

La fondation Seif el-Islam, du fils de Kadhafi, a été approchée par Vienne pour sauver la tête des deux touristes, comme elle l'a fait dans le cas des touristes enlevés par Abu Sayyaf aux Philippines.

Mais depuis deux semaines, plus rien ne bouge dans ce dossier, alors que les ravisseurs ont fait part de leurs revendications. Ils exigent une rançon de plusieurs millions d'euros, la libération d'islamistes proches d'al-Qaïda, dont Amar Saïfi, dit "El Para", qui avait enlevé des touristes suisses en plein Sahara, et la libération d'un couple d'islamistes emprisonnés en Autriche depuis le mois de mars après avoir diffusé une vidéo menaçant d'attentats l'Autriche et l'Allemagne.

"Bien qu'ils soient dans le désert, les djihadistes suivent l'actualité", confie notre informateur algérien. "C'est bien la preuve qu'ils ont des gens à eux partout. Les Européens doivent se méfier."

Des sources sécuritaires européennes révèlent aussi que des pressions sont activement exercées sur Vienne pour boucler ce dossier épineux avant le début de la compétition. "Les terroristes pourraient exécuter les deux otages en plein Euro 2008. Ça serait un désastre." Une menace qui préoccupe l'UEFA en contact constant avec les autorités autrichiennes.

Maliki flew to the northern city of Mosul on Wednesday to supervise a push against the Sunni Islamist militant group in what the U.S. military says is its last major urban stronghold.

Buoyed by the success of a recent operation against Shi'ite militias in the southern oil city of Basra, the prime minister said Iraq could not just rely on other countries for help, an apparent reference to the large U.S. military presence in Iraq.

"We have come to Nineveh to restore security," Maliki told reporters in Mosul. "Today, law and order is our message. We want to end the suffering in this province."

Iraqi officials hope the campaign, which started on Saturday and which is led by Iraqi security forces, will deliver a knockout blow to al Qaeda fighters where they have regrouped in Mosul and the surrounding province of Nineveh.

Osama Bin Laden (or someone playing the role) recently explained on newly released audio tapes that the reason Bin Laden and his crew is fighting western civilization (us) is the Palestinian struggle.  

I think most reasonable people want a fair solution to the Palestinian/Israeli problem.  Americans do understand that there's two sides to every issue and although our government is a strong supporter of Israel, they do understand that the Palestinians have some valid points in their case against the Israelis.

A little tip from me to the Palestinians, don't cozy up to Osama and his band of terrorists.  There's no surer way to prolong the current unresolved status of Palestine.

And as for Bin Laden himself, who can take him seriously when he tries to add reason to his insane acts? Since the Twin Towers came down, Bin Laden has claimed various explanations for waging a terrorist campaign against the west.  Our presence in Saudi Arabia, the perceived threat to Muslims' freedom to practice their religion, our culture offending his with our more liberal stance on the role of women (like we actual allow them to have one) and I could go on, but the point is made.

Bin Laden is a little evil man desperately trying to grab onto any chance to explain his inexplicable actions in order to win allies.  All, of course, so that he might one day be able to crawl out from under his rock.

Maybe President Bush is right after all and Osama Bin Laden IS irrelevant. 

Still, I look forward to the day that Bin Laden is called to judgement and made to pay for his crimes, whether here on Earth or in front of God himself.  Either way, I'm betting his rationale isn't going to win anyone over.
