My new setup is primed and ready for July, I feel good about it. My experience for the past 2 years dealing with banks and affiliate accounts has now led me to a point of total diversification. I have my affiliate payments split up between 15 different companies, some paying weekly, so my income is flowing into 8 different bank accounts almost every other day. This, unfortunately breaks some of the shiny tools that Amazon provides to their associates. This is neither good nor bad, it's just an unfortunate collision between two companies with mismatched goals.

Here are my personal notes for adding an Amazon associate link to a WordPress.com blog. It doesn't look as nice as the other Amazon tools, but it's completely functional. I'm placing them in a public space for others' benefit.

The Familiar Part

The following should be familiar.

1. Log into your Amazon Affiliate account.
2. Click on "Build Link/Widgets".
3. Click on "Product Links".
4. Search for the product you desire to showcase.
5. Click on the corresponding "Get HTML" button.

At this point, you cannot use the fancy "Text an Image (Enhanced Display)" option. WordPress.com will automatically strip out the floating "iframe" code. The iframe code allows Amazon to insert its web content into a rectangle on your screen.

The next best thing is to use the "Image Only (Basic Display)" option. You'll need an extra couple of steps to get this to work — but it will work.

Copy the Picture to Your Blog

1. Under "1. Select Link Type", click on "Image Only (Basic Display)". Wait for your browser to refresh.

2. Copy the HTML displayed in the box below, and paste it into your blog article. Keep moving; we're not done yet.
3. We need to upload the picture into your WordPress blog. Right click on the picture of your item, and save the image to you hard drive. Mac OS X users can simply drag and drop. Note! Do not change the name of the file. The name will be long and ugly, but that's how it is in the HTML that you copied into your blog article in the previous step. (True geeks, yes, you may hack the HTML if you wish. You know how.)

4. In your WordPress.com blog, click on the "Add Media" picture button. If you're not sure which is the picture button, hold the mouse over the first icon. A balloon will appear saying "Add an Image".

5. Click on the "Choose files to upload" button.
6. Select the picture's file.
7. Give appropriate text in the "Caption" and "Description" boxes.

The Tricky Part

Here's the tricky part. We have some objectives:

1. Fix the Amazon.com HTML so the picture appears and the associate link works.
2. Upload the picture to WordPress.com
3. Prevent WordPress.com from inserting new HTML.

Here are the steps to do that.

1. Look in the "Link URL" box. This displays the URL of the picture after it is uploaded. Highlight, then copy everything.

2. Click on "Save all changes". Do not click on "Insert into Post"!

3. You'll see the screen clear, and the word "Saved" appear. It doesn't stand out very well, but if you see it, then all is well.

4. Close the file upload screen by clicking on the small "X" in the upper right.

5. Go to the HTML code that you copied and pasted from Amazon.com. Locate the HTML for the picture. It begins with:

   It may also look like:

   The variations don't matter. The important thing is the src="…" part.

6. Notice that the name of the picture file comes immediately after that last quotation mark ("). Highlight everything up to (but not including) the next quotation mark (").

8. Now save your draft and check it. You'll know that you have it right if you (1) see the picture, and (2) see the Amazon.com preview come up when you hover over the picture.

I was asked, "How do I get the picture to justify right, left, or center?"

That's a great question. In HTML, pictures start with the text:

Options appear (separated by spaces) afterwards. Finally, the end of the picture is denoted by a single right angle bracked (>) also known as a "greater than sign".

To cause the picture to center, make the starting text look like:

Remember to ensure that a space follows the final double quote (").

So what are capital goods? You know that regular businesses purchase capital goods to increase production. You know that industrial businesses operate some of these capital goods to produce goods that they can then resell for profit. You know that capital goods can be land. They can be factories. So how does this relate to marketing your affiliate program? It's quite simple--in order to succeed, you must build a large pile of Internet capital goods and then use them to pull in customers and retain them.

Most affiliates do not understand this concept. What does this mean for you? It means that you either a) are already rich and can purchase that land, factory, machinery, and workers immediately (website, product rights, advertisement, etc) or b) you need to start building these Internet capital goods or you are definitely going to fail within 3 months.

So how do you know what is and isn't an Internet capital good? An Internet capital good is an item that, once you build or purchase it, will constantly add or create value for your business. This includes links, content, dynamic scripts, free tools that your targeted audience can use, and mailing lists that you can consistently offer your products to.

If you are not making an effort to build these Internet capital goods, you are the Internet equivalent of real life business that purchases frozen pizzas from the supermarket next door, heats them up in a microwave, and then tries to sell them. On top of that, your store has no napkins or condiments or tables or chairs or pizza boxes. Everyone must sit on and eat off of the floor.

Would you want to purchase pizza there? No, you would get it at the supermarket frozen at a cheaper price, or you would go next door, where they make it and then bake it in an oven, where you could sit down at a table in a chair.

Take the time to understand this point: If you want to succeed, you absolutely must either have money to buy your land, store, table, chairs, and oven--or you must build them yourself.
Fortunately for Internet marketers, you have a huge advantage over regular businesses--you can build all of these Internet capital goods; you do not need to pay for any of them.

You can build every Internet capital good I have mentioned above for no cost at all. And you will if you want to succeed on a limited budget. So setup your links. Make quotas; reach those quotas every week. Build content. Find legally reusable expert articles and add them to your website. Build pages that offer free tools to your customers. Use free advertising methods advertise this page as a useful stand-alone (which happens to be linked to your related website). Setup a free content ezine or marketing list that is related to your website. Register with free directories to get customers.

All of these Internet capital goods will not only draw customers to your business through a multitude of sources, but they will also retain customers that come to your website through free or paid advertisement by giving them the option to get free information or use free products.

As every marketing study has indicated, multiple impressions of a product increase a person's chance of buying it--and multiple contacts with a salesperson increases the conversion rate.

By retaining customers you will both increase the impression of your product and expose them to your sale copy, which will dramatically increase your conversion rates.

If you get nothing else out of this article, please remember this fact: the only way to successfully build and expand an Internet business is by building Internet capital goods and staying around until you have enough to constantly draw and retain customers. However, the evolution and growth of the Internet has hampered the growth of fortune making affiliate programs.

Constant search engine algorithm changes, along with the search engine's clear distaste for sites participating in affiliate programs; have made it a little more difficult to earn a healthy affiliate revenue.

An influx in the use of software programs that terminate cookie tracking and privacy programs that prevent webmasters from tracking referrers, have also hindered the affiliate sales channel. While it is still possible to make money through affiliate marketing, other alternatives ought to be considered.

A Healthy Alternative or Supplement Google's Adsense program allows approved websites to dynamically serve Google's pay-per-click Adword results.

This has become a popular alternative and an effective revenue sharing program for webmasters. Google's spider parses the adserving website and serves ads that relate to the website's content. While the Google's Adsense program still has some issues, they are making efforts to improve it.

Not that the Google Adsense program is not without its problems.as the reporting provided by Google is lacking. Google has not implemented any way to track multiple sites that serve ads (changed recently); they simply show the number of ads served, the percentage of clicks received, and the revenue earned each day.

Google does not disclose the amount of the revenue they share, what percentage of the revenue they earn and what someone can expect to receive for each click.
Webmasters with multiple sites will have difficulty determining which websites are producing the money in the Adsense program.

With affiliate programs many webmasters implement a new browser launch with each click off the site, Adsense removes the visitor from the website and there is not currently an option to launch the visitor into another browser. Early on Google implemented a filtering system that allowed webmasters to prevent a specific domain's ads from being served on the website.

Ad blocking meant that webmasters could prevent their competitors ads from being dynamically served on their website. Overall, adwords are great supplements to websites where affiliate programs are either not performing or when affiliate programs don't exist that target the sites content.

Give it a Try Implementing and maintaing Google Adsense program on a content site requires very little effort and can often bring a steady stream of additional revenue for webmasters.
Consider supplementing content and see what happens.

In order to make money with affiliate programs, you need to get exposure for those products.
One way is to have your own website and drive traffic to that website.

Another way is to have your own opt-in list or your own newsletter.

There is another way besides: Write Special eCourses which are sent by autoresponder and Reports which are compiled into a pdf or ebook format. Give these eCourses and ebooks away. This is called viral marketing.

The eCourse or report can't be just something filled with "fluff" and advertising. It must provide real help and information for the reader.

Subscribers to any list, whether it be an ezine, ecourse or tips list, are notorious for using that "unsubscribe" link. If you're not providing excellent information they're outta there!
The information product does not have to be that long. Just long enough to give good information and "teaser" to your affiliate products. And that brings up another point.

You don't want to inundate your reader with too many choices. Give him/her one or two good affiliate products and that product will be more likely to get the click.

Write your ecourse "all in one go" and then break it down into logical sections. Each of those sections would because a separate "lesson" and would be on its own autoresponder message.
Keep your autoresponder emails easy to read. Use the same format (60 characters per line) as you would a newsletter. Your reader would not have to scroll back and forth to read your information.

Ecourses provide an excellent advertisement opportunity if they are used correctly. Your job will be to find a good balance between providing enough valuable information and the advertisements for your affiliate product. You will also be providing your readers with the learning materials they need to be successful.
