There is a great, uncrossable gulf between animal brain and human mind. The evolutionary theory assumes that humans are animals, but cannot explain the difference between animal brain equipped with instinct, and the human mind with creative reasoning powers of intellect.

Some animals have physical brains as large or larger than man's, and with similar cerebral cortex complexity - but none has the powers of intellect, logic, self-consciousness and creativity of man. The physical brain of a dolphin, whale or elephant is larger than the human brain, while a chimp's is slightly smaller. Qualitatively, the difference between them and the human brain is very little - not enough to remotely account for the vastly superior intelligence and output of the human brain. The gap between animal brain and human mind is incredibly vast.

When God molded Adam out of the dust of the ground, he was made in the "likeness" - the outward form and shape - of God Himself. Not too many people believe that, but you can look it up in Gen. 1:26. God did not make any of the other creatures to be a replica of Himself. This unique form and shape was given to man alone. This is because man was created with the potential to become God. This is another doctrine not many believe, choosing the nebulous "floating on a cloud after death" theory. But of the two, the Bible is replete with inferences to the former.

Each animal was created with a brain suited for its particular animal kind. But animals do not have the potential of mind and character that God gave only to man. No animal was ever given the gift of mind power - ability to think, to reason, to make choices and decisions - as was man.

It is this very special attribute of mind and character that separates men from animals. Animals posess what we call instinct. Their brains are programmed, so to speak, by God with particular instinctive aptitudes to live and perform in a certain way. They follow instinctive habit patterns in their feeding, nesting, migration and reproduction. Thus beavers build dams, birds build nests. These aptitudes are inherited - they are not the result of logical, cognitive or thinking processes.

For example, millions of birds flock south each year as winter approaches in the Northern Hemisphere. They don't stop to reason why, they don't ask themselves whether they should, they don't plan ahead an itinerary for the trip. At a given internal signal - like the preset alarm of a clock - they leave their summer feeding grounds in the north and travel hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles south. Scientists don't fully understand why - they merely observe the operation of this animal instinct.

Each species or kind of bird builds a different type of nest; feeds on specific kinds of foods; and migrates at different times to various destinations. But none of these actions is planned in advance by the birds as humans would. Birds merely have the capability and proclivity to do that which Almighty God built into the instinct of each at creation.

But man's mind is vastly different from animal instinct. Man is able to devise various ways to do any one thing or to achieve a predetermined goal. Man can acquire knowledge and reason from it. He can draw conclusions, make decisions, will to act according to a thought-out-plan.

Man can design and build different types of houses, using various designs and building materials. Thus we see intricate designs of castles and mansions, and more basic designs like igloos and wood cabins. Humans also eat different types of foods, prepared in many ways, and in a logical, thought out manner. We may also live different lifestyles from one another. And if a man wants to change his way of life - he can! He is not governed by a set of predetermined habit patterns as animals are.

Man can choose - he has free moral agency. He can devise codes of conduct and exercise self-discipline. He can originate ideas and evaluate knowledge because he has a mind that is patterned after God's mind. Man can devise and bring his plans to fruition because he has been given some of the very creative powers of God.

Man alone can wonder, "Why was I born? What is life? What is death? Is there a purpose to human existence? Man, unlike the animals, not only "knows" how to do certain things, but he also knows that he knows - that is, he is aware that he has knowledge; he is conscious of that fact and self-conscious of his own existence as a unique being.

These attributes of mind and character make man God's unique physical creation. God has shared some of His own unique qualities with man. And God expects man to develop and become conformed to the "spiritual" image of God's perfect mind and holy character (Matt. 5:48) - just as man is now formed in the physical image of God.

But now the question begs to be answered - what is the elusive element that separates man from the animals?

"Human" spirit makes the difference

Man was created to have a special relationship with God. He was made in the likeness of the God kind. If in doubt, read what Jesus Christ looks like now in spiritual form (Rev. 1). He as a shape like we do, with all parts of the body comparable to ours, except in spiritual form and glory.

God's purpose in making mortal man after His own likeness demanded mind power in man patterned after God's own mind. That is why the most remarkable thing about man is his mind. What is it then that separates humankind from the animal kingdom? What gives man this god-plane power of intellect? It all boils down to a non-physical component in the human brain that does not exist in the animal brain. This component makes man so vastly different from animals, and truly unique.

Man does not have an immortal soul within him that enables him to live on apart from his body after death (remember man is a mortal soul). But the Bible nevertheless does speak of a "spirit in man" Here are some examples:

1. Job 32:8 - But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

2. Zech. 12:1 - The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.

The Commentaries are baffled by passages such as these, because their writers are so steeped in the doctrine of the trinity, they cannot understand that this spirit in man has no consciousness of itself. It is not an "immortal soul," nor is it the man himself. It is something within the man. Joined with his physical brain, it forms human mind. It imparts to man's brain his unique powers of intellect and personality - the ability to think rationally and make free will decisions. It imparts the ability to learn mathematics, , languages or other types of knowledge such as music, art, carpentry, flying.

The spirit in man can be called the "human" spirit, for it is in each human being, even though it is spirit essence, and not matter. It is not a "ghost," spirit being or the Holy Spirit. It is also not the soul - the physical human is a soul.

The human spirit does not supply human life. The human life is in the physical blood, oxidized by the breath of life (Lev. 17:11). But the spirit in man does impart the power of intellect to the human brain:

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God (I Cor. 2:11).

This non-phyical component in the human brain is spirit essence, just as in the material world, air is a gaseous essence. it cannot see - the physical brains sees through the eyes. It cannot hear - the brain hears through the ears. it cannot think - the brain thinks, although the human spirit imparts the power to think far above the level of the brute animal. Without such spirit, animals cannot do original thinking.

Whatever knowledge enters the brain through the five senses is instantly stored (memorized) in the human spirit within the person, much like a computer stores information. it enables the brain to have instant recall of stored up knowledge, thus enabling it to utilize bits of related information in the process of thinking and reasoning.

The human spirit imparts the power of intellect to the physical brain in two ways: 1) It gives the brain instant recall of whatever it calls for in its knowledge base and (2) it allows the brain to put the pieces of information stored in the spirit together in the process we call "thinking," "reasoning" and "drawing conclusions."

The human spirit is also the means God has instilled which to make possible a personal relationship between human man and divine God. It acts as a bridge, so to speak, between our mind and that of God. When the human mind is given the Holy Spirit, then there is a "bridge" of understanding between God and man. That is what the second part of I Cor. 2:11 is all about: "...even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God." It is the vital missing component in communicating with our Father and Jesus Christ.

This truth is so important that Satan has twisted and perverted it long ago. He clouded the minds of men and led them into believing his big lie as far back in time as the first human beings in the Garden of Eden.

Here was the origin of the "immortality of the soul" teaching so prevalent today. Satan told the first woman she would "not surely die" (Gen. 3:4). In other words, he told her she had an "immortal soul" that woud live forever. Eve believed this lie. And much of the world today continues to believe some variation of that ancient "big lie!"

Larry Harmon, who turned the character Bozo the Clown into a show business staple that delighted children for more than a half-century, died Thursday of congestive heart failure. He was 83.

"Bozo is a combination of the wonderful wisdom of the adult and the childlike ways in all of us," Harmon said.

Not only was he the most famous clown in the world, but he also managed to surpass the average life expectancy of 77. Was it solely genetics that kept him living or was it the happiness he felt in return for bringing happiness onto others? We all could learn something from Bozo. Smile, make people laugh, give a gift, and let someone know you appreciate them. By using these simple gestures Bozo changed peoples lives for over 50 years. Start bringing joy into your life and others. It works.

Thanks for reading I appreciate you!!

This homily has been posted with the direct and generous permission of the late Fr. Thomas Harding, Th.D. (1918-2005).

Because 1998 was the year of the Holy Spirit it is important that we emphasize the role of the Holy Spirit in the PLAN OF GOD and in this period of the history of the Church from the First Pentecost until the end of time and for all eternity.

In the Apostles' Creed we say: "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen."

In the Nicene Creed we say: "We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen."

The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

There are Biblical texts dealing with the Spirit of God from the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament to the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. We will mention a few of the familiar ones.

In Genesis 1:1-2a:4a we read "In the beginning, God created heaven and earth and the earth was void and empty and darkness was on the face of the deep and the Spirit of God moved over the waters. Then God said ‘Let there be light', and there was light God saw how good the light was." This is actually the second account of creation by the Priestly author of a later date.

The first account by the author known as YAHWIST because he referred to God as YAHWEH is in Genesis 2:4-7 where we read: "At the time when God made the earth and the heavens while as yet there was no field shrub on the earth and no grass of the field had sprouted, for the Lord God had sent no rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the soil but a stream was welling up out of the earth and was watering all the suiface of the ground The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life and so man became a living being."

The YAHWIST has no interest in the formation of cosmic light or the sun, moon and stars as Father George Montague says in his book entitled The Holy Spirit: Growth of a Biblical Tradition, because his interest is restricted to the earth and the things that immediately touch human life: water, earth, the sown land, animals, woman. His interest is centred in man who is ADAM for the ADAMAH, earthman from the earth.

Other popular texts from the Old Testament referring to the Holy Spirit or adaptable to His action are as follows:

In Isaiah 11:2-3. we read: "The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him; a Spirit of wisdom and understanding, a Spirit of counsel and strength. a Spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord." There is no explicit mention of piety in this text but it may be included in the opening words of the quotation. At any rate these Isaiah gifts are the general characteristics of the Messiah who is to come and, we hope. of his future followers who receive the Holy Spirit and His gifts in Baptism and Confirmation.

In Jeremiah 31:31-33, we read: "I will make a new covenant... I will put my law within them and I will write it upon their hearts."

In the prophet Ezekiel 36:26, we read, "I will give you a new heart and place a new Spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts."

In the prophet Joel 3:1-2, we read: "I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. Even upon the servants and handmaids, I will pour out my Spirit."

As we say in the Nicene Creed: "He" that is, "the Holy Spirit spoke through the prophets." He truly spoke through all the prophets of the Old Testament and through Jesus Christ, the Priest, Prophet and King of the New Testament!

The Holy Spirit by His Inspiration is the Principal Author of the books of both Testaments. And yet it is difficult to find a direct quotation from the Holy Spirit Himself in the Scriptures. There are many indications of the Holy Spirit speaking in the New Testament:

MATTHEW 10:19-21 "When they hand you over, do not worry about what you will say or how you will say it. When the hour comes you will be given what you are to say. You yourselves will not be the speakers; the Spirit of your Father will be speaking in you.." This is commonly referred to as "the Dabitur Vobis" which translated into English means: "It will be given to you."

Another oft-quoted text in this regard is JOHN 3-8: "The wind blows where it will you hear the sound it makes but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone begotten by the Spirit."

The text of Paul to the Romans 8:26-27 is very comforting for all of us: "The Spirit too helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in speech. He who searches hearts knows what the Spirit means, for the Spirit intercedes for the saints as God Himself wills." Again St. Paul says in I Corinthians 12:3 just before he lists the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit: "And no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord' except in the Spirit." So when you pray, be open to the Holy Spirit and He will take over. Invite Him to take over and your prayer life will improve immensely.

Thus the Holy Spirit is constantly in communication with the Church and with her members from within. We are Temples of the Holy Spirit and since He is dwelling within us, we receive His messages directly in our minds and hearts and it is our obligation to accept them and act upon them.

The Holy Spirit in The New Testament

In his constitution on Confirmation in 1971, Pope Paul VI said the New Testament shows how the Holy Spirit assisted Jesus Christ throughout His whole Messianic Mission:

1) At the Annunciation the Angel Gabriel said to Mary: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and that which you conceive will be called the Son of God." Luke 1:35

2) On receiving the Baptism of John the Baptist, St. John the Evangelist said: "I beheld the Holy Spirit descending upon Him like a dove and it stayed upon Him!" John 1:32

3) After His Baptism, St. Mark said: "He was led by the Spirit into the desert and He was in the desertforforty days and forty nights, being tempted the while by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts and the angels came and ministered to Him." Mark 1:12-13

4) Teaching the people of Nazareth, He showed by what he said that the words of Isaiah referred to Himself: "the Spirit of the Lord is upon me." Luke 4: 17-21

5) He later promised before He suffered that "the Holy Spirit would help them to bear fearless witness to their faith before persecutors." Luke 12:12

6) The night before He died, He assured His Apostles that "He would send the Spirit of Truth upon them from the Father." John 15:26

7) After His Resurrection, He promised the coming descent of the Holy Spirit: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down upon you and you Will be my witness in Jerusalem in all Judea and in Samaria and even to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8. He had told them: "not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the Father." Acts 1:4

8 ) After praying for nine days in the upper room: "the Apostles and the disciples with Mary, the mother of Jesus and the women and the brothers were ready to receive the Spirit " Acts 1:13-14

9) On the tenth day it is reported: "When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place. Suddenly, there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there. They were all filled with the Iioij' Spirit and began to talk in other languages as the Holy Spirit enable them to speak." Acts 2:1-4

10) The Church was born and the believers began to preach the Good News: "There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world. When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited because they heard the believers talking in their own languages. In amazement and wonder they exclaimed: "These people who are talking like this are Galileans! How is it then, that all of us hear them speaking in our own native languages? We are from Parthia, Media and Elam from Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia; from Pontus and Asis, from Phrygia and Pamphylia, from Egypt and the regions of Libya near Cyrene. Some of us are from Rome, but Jews and Gentiles converted to Judaism and some of us are from Crete and Arabia -yet all of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things God has done." Acts 2:5-11

Titles of the Holy Spirit

1) Advocate: "These things I have spoken to you while yet dwelling with you. But the Advocate, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and will bring to mind whatever I have said to you." John 14:26 Advocate means lawyer, one who pleads our case.

2) Paraclete: "But I speak the truth to you; it is expedient for you that I depart For if I do not go, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you." John 16:7-8 Paraclete means "Comforter", one who gives strength.

3) The Spirit of Truth: "But when the Advocate has come, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness concerning me." John 15:26

4) The Love of God Personified: "And hope does not disappoint because the Love of God is poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:5

Father Bernard J. F. Lonergan, S.J., the great Canadian Theologian uses this text to contrast the Apostles' love of God before and after the coming of the Holy Spirit on the First Pentecost. For example, Peter loved the Lord with a human love on the first Good Friday and he denied Him three times during the Passion. However, after the descent of the Holy Spirit, he loved the Lord with the love of God, or with divine love and thus he was able to face persecution and he even asked that he be crucified upside down because he was unworthy to die like the Lord.

There are other titles for the Holy Spirit such as: Comforter, Sanctifier, the promised One of the Father, and the Inner Teacher, the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of the Son.

Symbols of the Holy Spirit

1) A Dove: The dove has long been a sign of peace, gentleness and hope. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form, like a dove. A voice came from Heaven: ‘You are my Son, the Beloved with whom I am well pleased" Luke 3:22

2) Wind: The word SPIRIT is etymologically from the word BREATH or WIND. Invisible and formless, the wind can caress us or overwhelm us with its power. "The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." John 3:8

"And when the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were altogether in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a mighty wind blowing and it filled the whole house where they were sitting." Acts 2:1-2

3) Fire: Fire consumes and purifies, warms us and lights our path. "Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and a tongue settled upon each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit." Acts, 2:3-4

4) Water: Water cleanses and refreshes, yet its power can carve a mountainside. "Those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty; but the water that I will give shall become a fountain of water springing up unto life everlasting." John 4:13-15

"On the last and most important day of the festival Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, ‘Whoever is thirsty should come to me and drink As the scripture says, ‘Whoever believes in me, streams of life-giving water will pour out from his heart Jesus said this about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were going to receive. At that time the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not been raised to glory. John 7:37-39

This text is used to illustrate the growth in the Spirit in those who are living The life in the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit and the Church

God the Father's plan was to raise all the members of the human race to a participation of the divine life. When Adam sinned, He did not abandon human beings but sent His son Jesus Christ into the world as the Saviour and Redeemer. Christ inaugurated the Church, the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. He is the HEAD OF THE CHURCH.

When the work of redemption was completed, God the Father and God the Son sent God the Holy Spirit into the world that He might continually sanctify the Church and guide her until the end of time to preserve her from error and all dangers. The Holy Spirit, who is the Soul and the Life of the Church, gives her infallibility and indefectibility. He makes sure that the Church is One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic for all time to come.

Moreover, each member of the Church receives the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation along with His Gifts and Fruits and all the other wonderful effects of these sacraments. (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Vatican II, Numbers 2-8 )

As I sit here having just read this interview, I am blown away by how far we have truly come since

As I sit here having just read this interview, I am blown away by how far we have truly come since the birth of our first child. We have overcome so much and I know it is because neither one of us is afraid of staring adversity in the eye. Chris and I met November 2000 while we worked at the same company. We've been inseparable ever since, no matter what the storm brought to our world. Relying on each other's strengths and shoring up each other's weaknesses, we've managed to build an extremely strong marriage that has been tested time and again in the short six years of wedded partnership. And you know what? We've come out of each storm stronger and closer than before. There's a quote by Louisa Alcott: "I am not afraid of the storm for I am learning to sail my ship." Together we are not afraid of the storm and have slowly begun to master sailing our ship through whatever mighty waves come our way. I hope you enjoy this honest and compassionate look into my PPD experience from my husband's perspective.

Would you share your experience of watching the woman you love suffer from Postpartum Depression? What were some of the emotions you went through as you watched me spiral downward and what was the hardest part for you?

Wow, thats tough. I guess it is hard because I have blocked that out of my mind. I think the best way to answer that question is to just explain what PPD looks like from the outside from the perspective of someone who is uneducated in the signs, because that is where I was when it all began. Honestly I really didn't know what to think. All I knew is that the woman that I married and loved was gone. You were reclusive and moody most of the time. All I really wanted to do is just tell you to snap out of it, and I think that I did a couple of times. I thought you had become lazy and selfish. I knew something was wrong, but I thought it was more of a problem with lack of motivation and lack of discipline. It made me angry. After our second daughter was born, I had educated myself. I found that even though I got frustrated with you, I understood. I probably didn't show it all the time, because I had my own stresses going on with sixty hour work weeks and the hospitalization of our daughter. The hardest part of it all though was watching you hurt. I just wanted so bad for you to be happy and it just didn't seem to happen.

Looking back, would you agree that the lack of diagnosis/treatment of my first episode compounded my second episode?

Definitely. I actually believe that it just carried over into the second pregnancy. You never really recovered from the first episode. It wasn't until nearly a year after the birth of Charlotte that I even began to recognize you as the same woman that I married.

You recognized my PP OCD the second time around well before I was able to admit there was a problem. In fact, you even made the call to my OB's office for initial treatment. What were some of the warning signs that alerted you to the beginnings of this episode?

You had become anti-social. You were sad most of the time. You did a lot of cleaning, and please don't take this the wrong way because you really are a great housewife, but neither one of us is Mary Poppins when it comes to keeping the house clean. What really tipped me off though was that you just didn't seem well. You wanted to sleep a lot and you also seemed to snap very easily at the smallest things.

My hospitalization absolutely frightened me but ultimately became the turning point in my recovery. Would you share your memories and feelings surrounding my hospitalization?

Honestly, I was scared to death as well. I didn't know what I was going to do. I was working sixty hour work weeks with a two year old and newborn at home and I didn't know how I was going to take care of them. And how would I juggle having to make the hour drive back and forth to the hospital that you were in to bring you the things that you would need and to get milk for Charlotte? I didn't know how long you would be there. I was really scared. I was also concerned for you. I love you and didn't want to see you hurting. I was also thankful for the fact that you were getting the help you needed. When you called me at work and told me that you were having intrusive thoughts, I couldn't get home fast enough. Who knows what the outcome would have been had you not gone to the hospital that day? That thought still crosses my mind today. I am so grateful that you understood the severity of your problem and took the help that was given to you. I think it all goes back to education.

We worked very hard together to prevent PPD after Cameron's birth. What were some of the differences in how we approached the postpartum period this time around?

Well, I know that you took antidepressants during your pregnancy, but we also had a set of written guidelines as to what to look for and for how we would respond if certain events took place. We tried to educate (there's that word again) our families about the signs to look for and also what were the right and wrong things to say and do in the event that PPD reared it's head again. During your second bout with PPD I really think that we were better educated, but our families were not. This caused a lot of tension and strife. With the whole family knowing what to look for, it helped make everyone sympathetic to the situation. Boy do I wish we had that in place when in the throes of your second episode.

What is the biggest lesson you feel you've learned from my PP OCD episodes?

I always viewed mental illness as something that happened to other people. I viewed people with mental illness as weird or abnormal. The biggest thing I learned is that mental illness can strike anyone, at any time. I suffer from ADHD, depression and anxiety and would have never sought help with my issues had I not educated myself about yours.

What has it been like to watch me grow from mother suffering from PPD to the PPD Advocate I am today?

First I would like to say how proud I am of you. You have turned adversity into triumph. I have been amazed at the transformation. Most people just take their hard knocks and then move on, but you have taken up a cause and have made a difference in other peoples lives. I am inspired and in awe. I love you and encourage to keep up the great work that you are doing.

Share with us what you find to be most challenging about fatherhood. The Least challenging.

I have always been a rather impatient person. Fatherhood is teaching me patience. That is a challenge since I tend to want instant results. Maybe that is just the ADHD in me. Kids sort of move at their own pace, and I have learned that they are learning all along the way. To rush them along is not only detrimental to their growth and development, but it is also unfair to steal those learning experiences away from them. The least challenging is loving those precious kids. I just can't seem to get enough of them and can't give enough hugs and kisses. That is not a challenge at all.

How important do you feel it is to hold onto a sense of self once you become a parent? What are some ways a father can provide some much needed alone time?

You must know who you are before you can help someone else, namely your children, discover who they are. The best way to do that is to have some "me time". It is very difficult to get when you are a parent between diaper changes and cleaning mud (or other mud like substances) off the walls, but is essential. Sometimes I will stay up late to get some alone time or will go to the store. Don't forget though that you and your spouse need some time together too. Also, it is ok to ask your wife to take the kids for a few hours while you go get some coffee. Just remember though that you need to provide her with that same luxury as well. Ask the Grandparents to take the kids too. Even if it is just for an hour or two, you and your spouse can have a nice dinner or just go home and work on some of those household projects that you have on your "honey do" list.

And last but not least, if you had one piece of advice to give an expectant father (new or experienced), what would it be?

Educate, educate and when it's all through educate some more. You can never fully prepare yourself for everything that fatherhood throws at you, but knowing some of what to expect takes a lot of the anxiety away and relieves a lot of the stress on you and your spouses relationship

In fact, at a family dinner I was afraid to ask for the salt shaker because I thought I would be an inconvenience to someone. How insane is that? If your excuse for not asking is your fear of rejection or looking foolish, you’ll miss out on so many memories and opportunities. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, don’t hold back! ASK! Getting a no is better than never knowing. If you get a no, ask again, just do it in a different way or at a better time. Ninety four percent of salesman quit after the 4th call, however 60% of all sales are made after the 4th call. The next time you don’t want to ask, STOP and think about the last time you chose not to ask for something you really had to have. Remember that feeling when the person next to you got it instead? Think about how much better you’ll feel once you received what you asked for. Now start asking: go ask for that promotion, go ask that guy/girl out, go ask for a loan to help out with some bills. Asking is the easiest action to take and it will bring you closer to success and happiness.

At just seven weeks postpartum this past December, Jennifer Bankston took her life and her son's life as a result of a severe postpartum mood disorder. Her family has started a wonderful organization in memory of her dedicated to spreading awareness, educate, and help support women and families suffering with postpartum illness. They have already achieved so much and netted over $50,000 at their first fundraiser. Please support this amazing family as they join us to help prevent other families from the pain they have so unfortunately experienced.

As I said in my post yesterday, I went to visit a Super Max Federal Prison last night with my senior pastor and a fellow pastor to ministry to inmates. I've never been in that environment before. It was exactly as though I imagined. We walked into the front door, were searched, then identity checked, hand stamped and followed a very systematic process of moving to the room where religious services are held. As we were walking to the room, an alarm sounded. We stood against the wall as dozens of guards ran past us to what we assume to have been a fight. We continued on and eventually arrived at the room.

The room was decked out with a great sound system, drum set, guitars and guitar amps as well as theatrical lights. It was pretty impressive. There were some men there when we arrived, so we met them and spent some time getting to know them.

One of the men I met had been in prison for several years and would be for many many years to come. He had a bigger smile than you can imagine. As we talked he explained that he lived horribly on the streets, and when he was put in prison, he continued to act the same which led to him being placed in the super max. He then realized that he had violated the commands of a Holy God and that Christ was his only hope for salvation. Now he had joy. He has other inmates ask him all the time if he's having visitors because he is so happy.

Why shouldn't he be happy? He's found his advocate before God.

Karen Kleiman, a wonderfully dedicated therapist to the PPD world, has authored yet another wonderful book, Therapy & the Postpartum Woman. Available for pre-order now, this book will release in September and is written for the benefit of both clinicians and women with PPD to maximize the therapy experience on both sides. Click here to pre-order: Therapy & the Postpartum Woman

Here's an excerpt of what Shari Lusskin, MD says in the foreword of the Therapy & the Postpartum Woman:

Ms. Kleiman presents a theoretical framework in which the therapist “mothers the mother” by acting as the “good” mother, who “must achieve that equilibrium between absolute support and appropriate boundaries.” Using compelling patient narratives, she demonstrates just how to achieve that balance in order to teach the patient how to develop confidence in her own skills as a mother. There is a treasure trove of “clinical pearls” in this eminently readable book, which even the most experienced clinician will be able to use right away. For those new to the field, and for patients and their loved ones, the book offers a wealth of information on the nature of postpartum depression as a medical illness and the psychosocial issues that arise when a woman is faced with caring for a baby. Ms. Kleiman describes how the medical community tends to minimize the complexity of these issues and use a “one size fits all” approach to treating depression. Readers will learn to be more effective advocates for proper treatment of perinatal depression. Therapists will also learn how to draw from their own experiences to facilitate the human connection between therapist and patient at a time when women feel isolated by shame and insecurity. Together, the therapist and the patient can work towards discovering the innate resilience that has allowed women to raise children even in the most extreme circumstances. Ms. Kleiman has developed a humanistic approach to psychotherapy for postpartum mood disorders that gives recognition to psychodynamic theory, but then uses many cognitive–behavioral techniques to reach well-defined goals. Therapy and the Postpartum Woman is an elegantly written book that not only offers practical advice but also does so in a way that will touch the lives of both patients and therapists. It is destined to become a classic for those experiencing or treating perinatal mood disorders.

* Clinical psychologist says people in affluent localities try to keep their social status intact by not making their disputes public
* Advocate Surayya Farzand says if a dispute starts in a less privileged family, the husband usually beats wife and forces her to leave home

By Rana Tanveer

LAHORE: It seems that women in posh localities are happy with their marital life, because a less number of women from these areas go to courts to get divorce, compared to women from less privileged areas, reveals courts data available a survey conducted by Daily Times.

The survey, which was completed after analysing 300 cases out of 12,000, pending before family courts of the city, revealed that 7.8 percent women of Gulberg, DHA and Model Town (Gulberg 3 percent, DHA 2.2 percent and Model Town 2.6 percent) moved the courts.

These cases are about suits for dissolution of marriage, maintenance, repayment of conjugal rights, and suit for recovery of dowry.

The survey revealed that Bund Road alone has eight percent women who moved the courts to resolve their family disputes. About 32.7 percent women of less privileged areas have moved the courts to resolve their divorce disputes.

7.1 percent women in Cantonment demanded marital rights through courts from their former husbands, the study reveals. The Cantonment includes Saddar, Burki, and Manawan.

Women of Shalamar and its suburbs (7.5 percent), Shahdara (7.2 percent), Multan Road (3.4 percent), Wahdat Colony (0.75 percent), Johar Town/Iqbal Town (3.4 percent) and Chungi Amarsidhu (1.5 percent) took their family disputes before the courts.

Clinical Psychologist Sajjad Ahmad said, “Almost every married couple fights, but it is up to them how they resolve their matters. In affluent localities, people try to keep their social status intact by not making their disputes public. Women in posh localities being well educated try their best to resolve their family matters on their own. In case they have to part, they do it without intimating others or going to courts.” He said women in posh localities did not bother to move the courts for recovery of dower, which they considered an insult to the family.

He said, “Women in less privileged areas, being less educated, make mountains out of a molehill, disturbing their marital lives that later end in divorces.”

Normally, he said, women did not file cases against their former husbands, but their families forced them to do so.

Advocate Surayya Farzand Chaudhry, who deals with family cases, said, “If a matter rises in a well-off family, it is resolved through conciliation and in few cases divorce takes place. If a dispute rises in a less privileged family, the husband beats the wife and forces her to leave home. In such cases, husbands neither let their wives return home, nor divorce them, which forces the women to approach the courts.”

She said, “In several cases, the husband divorces his wife, but does not return her dower, which again leads the women to move the courts.”

When playing Chess, it seems like a game of triumph or loses. One can never tell if he pl

Board Game

When playing Chess, it seems like a game of triumph or loses. One can never tell if he played fair in the game. As the player makes a move, it entails great responsibilities and risks to what he does, like a leader that makes sense.

Playing chess is sometimes boring, sometimes exciting. The outcome is impulsive as the end of the game is never determined unless planned. The player is required to be focused during the game. Every move is well thought-out. Every chance is valued. In the game you can never redo what you have moved. Chess is not a physical contest, and there is no element of luck as in card games. Chess is, indeed, an easy yet a very meticulous sport.

Chess has tricky rules. The player needs to put in mind those conventions of the game when he takes a step in the board. It is important to know that the player is aware on how to move the chess pieces. Moreover, the player is required to be proactive. He must learn to plan all his moves before proceeding to the game so he will not end up being defeated by his own mistakes. Here, the opponent is not literally an enemy. It is the objective which requires attention.

Out of nowhere, I thought of something while writing this piece which I think is more of a sporty column than a formal one. I think about its relations to how a student organization is managed. Similar to chess, a student organization has student officers who play the role of being one of the chess pieces in a board. Chess pieces also have its own ranks as to a student organization.

The role of these student groups is to protect its King, the student organization as a whole that aims for student service. The goal, like in chess, which is toward a clean game, incorporating the rules of the match while aiming to meet the expectations of the studentry.

Like in a chess game that has a group of chess pieces making their way to cross the board, a student organization will not be successful unless there is cooperation. No teamwork means no concrete plans. In the last student elections, the councils are filled with officers who come from different parties.

Though there are misunderstandings after the election due to the issue of cheating and the alleged violation in the Election Code, it is a good move that these contrasting parties have settled their own grievances in order to manage their posts.

In the case of Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance Student Council (IABF-SC), the president is the only one who comes from SAMASA party while the rest are from Sandigan. If there are any internal problems that this student council is facing, this must be because of the difference in orientation of the two varying parties. However, it is good if this student council and the like set their minds in reference to what their goal is: to serve the students in a way that will benefit everybody.

This comparison is just a miniature of the game of student organizations this school year. If you read this piece from the start then you’ll come to the idea of considering the game chess in playing your role as a student leader in a student organization.

The challenge is to imagine your self being in the chess board and have a fair game while incorporating the rules of your organization and the others’. Don’t just move your chess pieces without any plans because this can destroy all your chances and worst, at the end, the students whom you serve for will tell you ‘checkmate’.

At the end of the day, student leaders must have fair term for students whom they serve this year. Fair term in a sense that they will give back the service that students expect them in return to the trust they grant to all student leaders. This is only a once in a lifetime opportunity, so make the best out of the game. Don’t waste it.

Student leaders, consider the things mentioned here about chess. It’s an advice for all. May all serve the students well enough for them to say: It’s a good year for all student leaders.

Set your pieces at

The Art Community in Guam is not complete without the name of Judy Flores attached to it. As long as I can remember, she brought the unique wax melted Javanese art form to Guam and then was able to bring the native Chamoru culture alive through it.

To achieve such vibrant colors, wax is applied to the fabric/cloth ( often a combination of bee's wax and parafin wax is used) before the dyes are applied. Often a series of colors are used through several drying cycles. A canting needle is skillfully manipulated so that it allows the wax to seep out of a tiny spout of a metal cup attached to the wooden tool. Other techniques of applying the wax, including pouring the liquid and then using a brush, or applying it to a pre-carved wooden or metal or wire box and then stamping it on the fabric.

Since her arrival to Guam over 50 years ago, Judy truly adopted the the Chamoru culture. She learned the language and married a local boy. She has been active in many community efforts especially in the art community. She has written two local children's books as a tribute to her grandchildren.

Her Batik works of art adorn many government buildings and businesses on Guam. She is an advocate of Arts Education and has earned a P.H.D. in the Arts of Oceania. There are a couple of web sites of interest: http://www.judyflores.com/Home_Page.html and https://batiksbyjudyflores.com/.

Judy Flores has made her mark on Guam and will forever be known as one of it's island treasures.

When I started this blog, I had intentions of covering all aspects of autism, but focusing mainly on sharing news as well as day-to-day things that occur. Lately though, with all the news happening, I've gotten caught up. I've posted on so much of the hype that I've gotten away from my original plan. So, I do promise to get back on task to a more rounded blog about autism...but I do want to talk about the new "Just let him be" campaign that's supposedly growing in numbers, those who want us to just 'accept' our child the way he is, and stop all the treatments. (For more info, see ABCNews.com for this: Autistic and Proud)

What??

That was my first thought -- stop all treatments? Stop looking for a cure and accept them for who they are?

I thought about this further, and couldn't get past the thought that anyone who thinks we haven't accepted who are children are really doesn't know what they're talking about. I think everyone other than those dealing with new diagnoses, those who haven't had a chance to grasp it all yet, accepts their children. I accept my child's autism. I accept his differences. I accept his tics, his stims, his rituals, his needs...but that doesn't mean I've given up on thoughts of happiness and functioning as he wants to within society, and I don't see him being able to do that if he's on the floor in a tantrum, biting himself, wetting/messing himself, or not understanding a change in routine. For non-verbal kids, I don't think their parents should have to just 'leave him be' when it comes to not ever hearing their child speak. I don't know, my child's verbal, but from parents I've met, they'd give their right and left arms to hear their child say "I love you" or "I'm happy, Mom." Who can blame them?

So moving on past 'acceptance,' what about finding a cure. Why wouldn't we want to stop another generation from watching their child bang their head on the floor, line up their toys for hours, or flap their hands so much they can't pay attention to anything else. Sure, I love and accept my child for his uniqueness, but does that mean that I should be okay with autism being out there, and I shouldn't want other children to not have to go through this? It's okay for some people, but why make that decision for others?

Heck yes I want a cure. I don't believe we're going to find it in genetics though -- maybe partially, because these kids are genetically predisposed to autism, but we need to focus on why these children develop normally, even if they have a few oddities, then suddenly don't. There's something in our environment causing this, and the research needs to go there.

I accept my son for who he is. The differences that autism has 'caused' him in make him unique. I often envy his outlook on life, and I don't necessarily want to change it. I really wish I didn't care what others think and would just dance in the aisle if I felt moved. I wish I could be comfy in flame-patterned lounge pants and a purple Pokemon t-shirt if I wanted to...in public. My son can. My son is a very unique individual, and I'm so very proud of him. I also know that until the world accepts his differences, he could be in for a hard time as he gets in higher grades in school. But that's not his problem, that's society's. Autism's often teased, harassed, bullied and ignored, where other disabilities are accommodated. Still though, if I can help him feel more happy, more safe, more comfortable, then I'm going to do that. If that means biomedical treatment to help heal a funky rash, to stop a stim that leaves him with clown mouth, to help him sit down long enough to eat, to eat more than 7 items, to help him be, ahem, regular and not have a hurting tummy, then I'll do that. In my opinion, to allow your child to suffer just so we can be prideful is wrong.

My child will be old enough to make his own decisions eventually. Until then, I'm going to do any and everything I can to make him healthy and happy. If autism takes away from that, I'll be first in line to fix it as he deserves nothing less than healthiness and happiness. I can do that while still being proud of the unique little guy that he is.

The birth of a baby is supposed to be a joyous occasion in a woman's life. The reality is up to 80 percent of new mothers experience feelings of emotional instability, known as ‘Baby Blues" in the first weeks after pregnancy. Up to 20 percent suffer from a more severe form of depression known as postpartum depression.

The Women's Center at CoxHealth announces the creation of two support groups designed to address topics affecting new mothers, including postpartum depression.

The first, "Mom's New Groove", is a series of six educational classes. The initial class in the series will be at 12:30-1:30, Wednesday, June 18 at The Turner Center conference room, 1000 E. Primrose. The classes are ongoing, so women can begin at anytime and continue until attending all six classes, which will be held at the same time and place each week.

"In the entire state of Missouri, there is only one postpartum depression support group, and it is in St. Louis, so there is a huge need in this region," says Dana Lewis, women's health educator at The Women's Center.

Lewis and Jennifer Stephens, a student at Missouri State University, developed the series, which is supervised by health care professionals. Stephens suffered from postpartum depression after the birth of her first child.

"Our biggest goal with this education is to normalize postpartum depression. These classes will help women understand that they are not alone, that they shouldn't feel bad about themselves for having these feelings and that there is now somewhere to go for help," says Stephens.

The six classes in the "Mom's New Groove" series include handling major adjustments in a woman's life, understanding baby's needs, learning safety tips, and transitioning back to work. Two classes will focus on postpartum depression. Women will learn the signs of postpartum adjustment disorder, how to cope and how a baby can change relationships. These two classes will be led by Wanda Holloway, a clinician at The Burrell Center.

Women who need additional support dealing with the strain of caring for their new baby will be encouraged to attend the second support group, "Beyond Baby Blues." This support group will begin after the first six weeks of "Mom's New Groove", and will be led by Wanda Holloway.

For more information, call The Women's Center, 269-Lady.

How To Deal With Schoolyard Bullies

I didn't get it at first. What could he mean by asking:

Does your mother have a black dress?

No other credential program professor would tell this story. No other credential program professor would have this story. But because he’s Dr. Rosy, he’d tell us how he as a school teacher once dealt with a school bully.

This had to have happened in the mid-90s, in the first few weeks he taught 8th grade English in a high school somewhere in the Midwest.

The way he tells it, he came across an all-state athlete picking on some scrawny kid whose feet weren’t touching the ground. The lineman had the kid up by the collar.

Dr. Rosy — then Mr. Rosy, doctoral student — walked up to the bully and told him to put the kid down. The bully complied immediately. This kid must have been pushing iron since the 3rd grade, recalled Rosy.

This athlete was 6 feet 5 inches, with a solid 300 pounds of muscle, and now focused his attention on the upstart teacher.

A girl off to the side of the scene told the football player to just take care of Rosy already. Rosy wasn’t impressed; he asked the girl for her cell phone. She declined.

In that case, you call 911 and get an ambulance here. Well, maybe two. This guy’s so big he won’t fit in one.

Rosy was at least 43 years old and slightly shorter than the bully. A large-framed man even then, he would have been quite a bit smaller than the massive boy defiantly facing him, as if to challenge the teacher's authority with a show of muscle.

Rosy, unimpressed, asked the kid a question.

Does your mother have a black dress?

The bully didn’t understand, so Rosy repeated the question.

Does your mother have a black dress?

Rosy must have feigned pondering to himself for a moment. Knowing him, for dramatic effect.

Because she’ll need one in about four days. That’s about when the state buries you.

That’s about when the story ends with my class laughing hysterically, some laughing out of horror.

He never advocated using or threatening violence, of course, and made sure to say that.

You have to improvise, overcome and adapt to these situations.

That’s one way to look at it.

These impromptu anecdotes were the best part of my credential program. The most entertaining, the most useful, the most helpful, the most consoling. I always felt like I learned something from every one of his classes.

Local Paper Says "Bikes should be part of transit efforts"

One of my local hometown papers editorialized this morning for more mixed-mode transportation -

One of my local hometown papers editorialized this morning for more mixed-mode transportation - using bikes with buses and trains. I'm glad they did - transportation editorials in my area typically concern cars, congested roadways and their economic impacts, while leaving the benefits of cycling out of the discussion. I hope The Advocate and our other local papers will weigh in from time to time and increase their coverage of mixed-mode developments.

The editorial stresses the value of bikes and buses, rightly praising the 2-capacity bike racks installed on the front of each bus. After reading, it occurred to me that not all cyclists need their bikes at their destination. Installing bike racks at selected, high volume bus stops may be another option for consideration. With good racks in place, cyclists could lock and leave their bikes, take the bus, do their business, and then return to their bikes while opening up the bus bike racks for people who really need them.

Additionally, bikes are banned from trains during peak hours. This has engendered a fair amount of polarized discussion. Our Metro-North cars are scheduled to be replaced over the next 3-4 years, and they weren't designed with bikes in mind at all. The interior designs are not yet final, so the possibility remains that bikes can be accommodated through interior design or some other means. I plan to look into this further and see what is - and can - be done.

If the link goes bad, you can view the article.
