Menurut Petty Siti Fatimah Tunjungsari, Pemimpin Redaksi femina, wajah dunia kerja memang berubah.

Samuel Mulia, 44 tahun, Media and Brand Consultant mengaku sering ngantor di taksi.

Ninie, 36 tahun, Wedding and Event Consultant menjalankan usaha tanpa kantor. "Pertimbangan saya supaya efisien. Ia mengakui hal tersulit tanpa kantor manakala meraih kepercayaan klien. Oleh karena itu, ia berusaha profesional. Misalnya menyiapkan diri sebaik-baiknya dalam presentasi. "Saya pun harus berusaha memberi jawaban memuaskan," ujar Ninie yang selalu membawa komputer jinjing seraya mengakui bahwa kompetitor bisnisnya cukup banyak. Ia pun menangani pernikahan cara Indonesia, selain pesta pernikahan cara India, Jepang, dan Eropa.***

(Paid review)
A lover of fashion and of style often is a lover of aesthetics. What better than to aw

(Paid review)

A lover of fashion and of style often is a lover of aesthetics. What better than to awake in beautiful surroundings, flanked by solid yet understated furniture. Looking for that perfect blend of design, craftsmanship, aesthetics and quality? Furniture company Lombok has this and more to offer. Largely wood-based in a variety of stains from white oak to dark teak, Lombok's provides one with a generous selection of pieces to mix and match, in order to create your dream home.

To me, the bedroom is one of the most important places-- aside from the bathroom. You begin and end your day in it, and therefore the ideal bed that can be sought to the best of your abilities should always be scored

Take for instance, this gorgeous Canton four poster bed. I adore four poster beds, because of its classic charm, and true to Lombok's Eastern-inspired style, this bed incorporates the Eastern element with dark-stained wood. Throw on a textured blanket, some pillows in the same color family as the bedspread, and voila. En-route to The Land of Sweet Dreams.

From the same Canton range comes this breathtaking mirror with a distressed black lacquered frame. Propped against the wall for a relaxed feel, this completes the look. After all, no home is complete without a full-length mirror; so why not make it a stunning one. There's a reason why The Queen in Snow White would go "Mirror, mirror" on the wall everyday.

No day is complete without food. Be it a hearty breakfast, or a wholesome dinner, or even a laidback supper. Pop open a bottle of Shiraz or bubbly champagne, dig into a chocolate cake as you clank your crystal goblets in a toast. The brown muffins on the table for tea, or the waffles on the morning spread. Lombok, too, offers a beautiful range of solid Dining Tables, such as this particular Malang dining table made of solid teak planks stained dark brown. An extended table from the same range is also available.

An avid bibliophile like myself sure appreciates a sturdy bookcase as a shrine to my precious book collection. Otherwise, a bookcase is always handy as a room divider, a holder for knick-knacks that symbolically store the memories of days gone past, or simply for organization. Here, the Rustic bookcase will sit in beautifully in a modern, cosmopolitan setting or a rustic, laidback one as its name suggests.

Whilst on the subject of storage, this Rustic wardrobe will be a beautiful sturdy piece to encase one's precious clothes and shoes.

Other top picks of mine include:

This gorgeous cushioned piano stool that would be a beautiful accompaniment to my piano.

Sure looks inviting!

This Primitive Bench for lazing around on. Doesn't it remind you of those carpenter's work benches, or the long benches at the school tuckshop?

This dark-stained console table to display freshly-cut flowers and to drop off the keys on.

A white-stained oak set for the kitchen

And lastly, a beautiful chest to store memories, blankets and the favorite stowaway stuff. That which makes it a delightful treat to open the chest. The Treasure Chest.

[googlevideo=http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docid=-1932653890035364115]

Revista VEJA | Edição 2065 | 18 de junho de 2008

Front-of-the-book tag line: "The Ten Commandments of Steve Jobs."

O capitalismo segundo Steve Jobs

Capitalism according to Steve Jobs

Double the speed at half the price is Apple's principal commandment for the iPhone to conquer seventy nations -- including Brazil.

The story makes a perfect, if mundane, illustration of the style of journalism practiced at Brazil's (by its own account) largest-circulation newsweekly.

Hyperbole: The journalist is Moses, bring sacred writ down the mountain from on high.

That analogy made me laugh until Branquinha da Moenda-brand pinga shot out my nose.

Hagiography, as the flip side of demonization: Steve Jobs is God. Evo Morales is the Devil.

Ideological slant: The magazine somehow manages to turn a perfectly ordinary product roll-out into the Second Industrial Revolution and, at long last, an authoritative refutation of Das Kapital.

Absence of sourcing: The only source cited by name is a New York Times columnist. On the New York Times tech section, I have publicly stated (and I meant it at the time; perhaps things have improved):

The New York Times technology section is a wasteland of happy-talk product-launch stories and gabbling “rhetoric of the technological sublime” press releases, reputation-laundered under a Times byline and foisted on readers as legitimate journalism.

Complete lack of critical reporting: There is no evidence that the "reporter" has actually used the device in question, interviewed anyone at the company or its partners among the providers about the business plan, crunched the numbers, or otherwise added value beyond likening Steve Jobs to Ayn Rand's John Galt.

This is very much the same thing the Budd Commission castigated the BBC for doing when anchorpersons spend large amounts of airtime "playing uncritically with and making favorable comments about" the Wii game gizmo, whatever that is. See

Advertorial: This piece of "journalism" is indistinguishable from Apple's PR campaign for the iPhone 2.0.

My comments in roman; translated text in italics.

File under "the rhetoric of the technological sublime in post-modern consumer technology PR" and "autohagiography by proxy."

"When Steve Jobs took the stage to present the new iPhone last week in San Francisco, exiciting improvements in the device were expected. And those expectations were met – in the form, for example, of a faster Internet connection. What was not expected was the explanation of a new philosophy of business whose impact extends well beyond the selling of the product. The ten commandments created by Jobs are reproduced in this article.

In other words, this "article" consists entirely of Apple's prepared publicity for the gizmo, "reproduced" and labeled as journalism.

If some undisclosed commercial arrangement accounts for the enormous amount of publicity (Veja has mentioned the iPhone more than 3,200 times in print and online, a site search indicates), it may constitute advertorial.

In any event, it is fake news and plagiarism -- which I believe at Stanford is what they like to call "innovation journalism," much as Edward Bernays coined "public relations" to avoid the negative connotations that had attached themselves to "propaganda."

“Without it, life would be hell on earth.” Microtec advertisement, Veja magazine, issue 87. File under “the rhetoric of the technological sublime (RTS) in postmodern technology PR, Velvet Elvis tendency.”

Caveat: Look, I have nothing against the iPhone per se and qua gizmo.

My friend the Manhattan Monkey Woman, who has a gadget-impassioned boyfriend at the moment, even has one now. I am waiting to hear about her consumer experience. So far, she says, she remains clueless about how to make the "infinitely intuitive" interface do anything.

1. Double the value for half the price. Downloading a Web page on the new iPhone, which runs on a 3G network, is two times faster. At the same time, Apple cut the price in half. The model has 8 gigabytes of memory and goes for $199. Before, it cost $399. Jobs committed to maintaining the same price in every country where the iPhone is launched. According to him, the "Big Mac’ index (often used to compare the cost of living in different countries) will soon have to be replaced by the ‘iPhone index’.

That's an enormously stupid thing to say.

The 16MB model is a (suggested) $299, by the way.

The short video I produced to illustrate this blog post is a modest 32MB. Good luck streaming that seamlessly 500 km south of Manaus, dude.

$199 is 75% of a Brazilian minimum salary at current exchange rates -- the dollar is in the tank down here, please do something, Hank Snow -- but only about 75% of my daily earnings in my last full-time job.

It constitutes about 22% of a U.S. minimum monthly salary.

Which at $199 makes it about three to four times more expensive relative to local wage scales, and 20 times more expensive for a Tupi minimum wage earner than for an obscure, reasonably well-paid New York trade press managing editor.

Vive la Revolution.

2. What was expensive is now cheap. So as not to pass the cost of technological excellence along to the consumer, Apple signed a new partnership agreement with AT&T in the United States. The company headed by Jobs will no longer received a percentage of the monthly fees paid by users. In return, AT&T agreed to subsidize the price of the device for the consumer – thus the reduction in price. That subsidy will also be offered in other countries, including Brazil.

3. The market and the world. In 2007, Apple announed that the iPhone would only be sold in the U.S., part of Europe, and possibly in Asia. That plan has changed. The number of countries where the iPhone will be sold by the end of the year leapt from six to seventy. Last week, cellular operators Vivo and Claro confirmed that the iPhone will arrive officially in Brazil, where it is already a hit. Some estimates point to the existence of 300,000 iPhones in operation here.

4. Voice is the least of it. All the new features of the 3G iPhone have as their objective to exploit to the maximum the device's main purpose: making it easier to surf the Web. The iPhone has already made a great leap forward with its spacious screen, which simplifies access to Web content and makes access more natural. Last week, Jobs presented a series of Internet applications developed especially for the iPhone 3G – applications which could not be practicable on a conventional device.

5. The world conspires in its favor. While Steve Jobs sleeps, 250,000 are working on developing programs for the iPhone. This is not the number of employees at Apple, but the number of independent developers now dedicated to writing software for the device, such as games or map location services. The business is so promising that Apple announced the July 11 opening of the AppStore, a virtual store (don't confuse it with iTunes) that specializes in iPhone software.

Apple reports 250,000 downloads of its iPhone SDK, or software development kit, used to write applications for the gizmo. That does not mean that 250,000 programmers are cranking out apps like Santa's elves, though.

6. Partners will make money. The ease of Web surfing means that iPhone owners will use more Web services. As a result, the telephone companies make more money. Telefónica, which sells the Apple cell phone in the U.K., said that monthly revenues from iPhone users could be 30% greater than revenuer from users of other cell phones. AT&T, exclusive provider of the phone in the U.S., noted the exact same effect. And if that were not enough, the company is gaining new customers. Four of five iPhone buyers are new AT&T subscribers.

7. Think big, but start small. Currently, half of Americans who use a smartphone at work use the BlackBerry. But since the iPhone was launched, 13% of consumers have traded in their BlackBerry for the Apple device. More: 40% of smartphone users have already migrated to the iPhone. Jobs did not wish to comment on the iPhone's potential leadership of this market. The model launched last week can be synchronized with e-mail, calendar and telephone contacts -- an essential function for executives.

8. Revolutionize. The biggest seller in the history of cell phones is the Motorola Razr. Since its launch in 2004, 140 million units have been sold. To date, iPhone sales total 6 million units. The Razr's success was due to its ultrathin design. But it offered no functions different than those of a normal cell phone. The iPhone has gone much further. As The New York Times tech columnist David Pogue said, there are three ways to access the Internet: Windows, Apple and the iPhone, which is like nothing else on the market.

Personally, I have also accessed the Internet using BlackBerry and a Linux-powered laptop. And I am working on making my Pocket PC run Linux as well.

9. The Internet is the Computer. In its prehistory, the Internet was nothing more than a means of facilitating communication among academics. It later evolved into a gigantic database. Now, it is capable of replacing some functions of the personal computer, such as memory and processing capacity. Many programs run on the Internet, in so-called ‘cloud computing’. When data are inside this cloud, it is possible to consult anywhere, from any device. The iPhone takes advantage of this potential like no other. Apple has a Web storage service exclusive to iPhone users – MobileMe.

10. My language is your language. Almost everything you do on the iPhone is intuitive. Its ample touchscreen simplifies access to information stored on the phone and the Web, making it a natural process. Unlike most smartphones, which only have two or three of their functions used by owners, in the cae of the iPhone, 80% of owners use more than 10 functions. Following the same logic, the new model iPhone displays all its commands in the language of the user and can even work with Chinese ideograms. If it is not possible to type a text in Chinese on the keyboard, one can simply draw the symbol on the screen.

Orangtua pilihan.

Waspada jika punya riwayat keguguran atau mengidap penyakit yang dapat mempengaruhi kehamilan;

Nutrisi cukup menunjang pertumbuhan janin yang sehat;

Kontrol kehamilan lebih aktif;

Istirahat cukup dengan masa istirahat dua kali lebih banyak;

Olahraga yang pengaruhnya menyehatkan anak yang tepat dengan kondisi calon ibu;

Mengikuti kelas prenatal;

"Saya keliling Mal Pondok Indah," ujar finalis wajah femina 2002 sembari tertawa geli. "Punya batita kembar tiga sungguh melelahkan.

Galang dukungan dari suami, keluarga, teman dekat, kolega di kantor serta dokter dan perawat untuk melakukan yang terbaik demi si bayi;

Gali informasi dengan berkonsultasi intensif kepada dokter;

Ikuti saran kesehatan seperti saran diet sehat;

Pilih rumah sakit yang bisa diantisipasi manakala bayi dilahirkan prematur atau perlu perawatan khusus;

Pertama, kembar bayangan cermin. Kedua, kembar beda hari lahir. Ketiga, kembar siam. Keempat, kembar identik beda jenis kelamin. Kelima, kembar parasit.

Sebagai penutup, Diah Kurniati menegaskan punya anak kembar dobel (sungguh) bahagia sekaligus cemas. I.G. Leonard dari Sekolah Keperawatan Universitas British Kolumbia di Vancouver, Kanada mengungkapkan pemicu kecemasan, seperti takut melahirkan bayi prematur, membayangkan proses melahirkan bayi kembar lebih sakit, dan takut menghadapi kemungkinan operasi caesar.***
