Adele si guardò ancora riflessa nello specchio del parrucchiere: era lì, ormai anziana, ma con una luce fresca negli occhi che nemmeno una ragazza appena affacciatasi alla vita rifletteva. Certo lo sguardo era a volte rivolto ad un passato lontano …. ma non era nostalgico, forse solo un po’ triste per ciò che era andato perso e che difficilmente poteva essere ritrovato, anche se a guardare bene è sempre lì, nascosto nella magia di una notte di luna piena al solstizio d’estate … e non solo.

Forse era l’ultima del regno delle fate, forse l’ultimo anello che ci congiungeva a Dio. Era il riflesso delle nostre speranze e appariva così come ognuno voleva che apparisse.

Ormai gli unici che speravano in un mondo migliore erano gli anziani: un sogno privo di egoismo poiché non era per loro ma per i loro nipoti, per il futuro di quelle generazioni che sarebbero dovute arrivare. Ma erano  gli stessi nipoti che con l’assenza dei loro sogni distruggevano ciò che i loro avi  avevano creato. E la signora era anziana perché era lo specchio di chi sperava e anziano era chi sperava anche nel dolore dell’abbandono, della malattia e  dell’indifferenza. E fra un po’, quando neanche loro ci sarebbero stati  più anche lei sarebbe scomparsa … e dopo? Forse sarebbe continuata a vivere solo nelle storie che le mamme avrebbe raccontato ai bimbi prima di metterli a dormire la sera. Ma forse neanche più quello: non c’era più tempo per raccontare favole ai bambini, e questi crescevano sempre più aridi, sempre meno sognatori.

Si guardò allo specchio: un tempo era bella , non ha mai avuto bisogno di trucchi e di belletti: era bella così, non potevi migliorarla in altro modo : sarebbe stato un sacrilegio: era … e basta. L’unico vezzo che mai si fosse permessa, più per frivola civetteria che per reale necessità, erano quelle sedute dal parrucchiere di tanto in tanto. E mentre Alfredo acconciava i suoi lunghi capelli, un tempo castani e lucenti, ora candidi come la prima neve dell’inverno, ma sempre permeati di quella lucentezza che solo nelle stellate notti d’estate pensi di poter vedere, sognava: sognava un tempo lontano, dove bellissime fanciulle si prendevano cura dei capelli delle principesse e il tempo scorreva in armonia con la vita e l’universo.

Lei era e basta: era ….. era il tramite fra gli uomini e Dio. Chiamatela fata angelo o entità ….  chiamatela come volete …. Lei era.  Lei era quella che sussurrava i nostri sogni all’orecchio di Dio; e Dio prendeva quei sogni e li trasformava in Luce, e li trasformava in mondo. Poi prendeva un bimbo e ce lo faceva sedere nel mezzo. E c’erano colori  e c’erano suoni  e c’erano armonie.

Ora riflessa in quello specchio sorrideva, era serena, lei l’equilibrio fra ciò che era e ciò che sarebbe potuto essere. Non c’era angoscia , forse solo un velo di tristezza  in quegli occhi celesti come un cielo di primavera.  Tristezza per lo spreco che si fa senza rendersene conto … tristezza per tutte quelle opportunità perse, scivolate vie come il ghiaccio che si scioglie al sole, evaporate; tristezza per tutti noi … ma pazienza, si vede che doveva andare così.

Adele richiamata dai suoi pensieri, alzò gli occhi:  le era sembrato di aver colto un movimento alle sue spalle, forse una cliente di Alfredo, ma non si preoccupò, nessuno sembrava più vederla da tanto tempo. Camminava come un’ombra fra le vie del paese. Si girò e vide una signora, avrà avuto forse quarant’anni, o forse trenta: non le si poteva dare un’età precisa: aveva un viso intenso, reso ancora più intenso da profondi occhi verdi. Sembravano lo specchio di un mondo lontano, quasi irraggiungibile anche per lei, che era. In quel mondo scorrevano fiumi, e c’erano cascate altissime. C’erano laghi calmi e alberi sotto cui poter riposare. C’erano oceani con le loro onde potenti. C’era.

La signora guardò l’anziana e la salutò. ‘Strano’- pensò la signora -  ‘mi vede’. Le due si misero a parlare, anzi era la signora che ascoltava … Adele parlava. Che strana sensazione, lei non aveva mai parlato: erano  sempre stati gli altri a  parlarle, a raccontarle i propri sogni, le proprie paure, le proprie gioie e i propri dolori e non il contrario. Adele parlava e ricordava raccontando di tempi andati e  di luoghi lontani.

Distrattamente si voltò verso lo specchio e non credette ai suoi occhi… ma era possibile … era ringiovanita.

2008 may well be the year of the Sparro. The world straddling, Aussie born soul singer has been destroying the charts with the phenomenon that is ‘Black and Gold’. Following a year on the road that has taken him across the world Sam and his merry band are continuing to take the party wherever the bus stops. The ascendant success of his eponymous debut album and in particular single ‘Black and Gold’ has seen him recently collecting a string of accolades in the year end award season, including 5 Aria nominations from his native Australia. Sam took some time out before a recent Norwich show to discuss awards, Lindsay Lohan, duets and new material.

Hey, so first off I wanted to talk about the big news at the moment being the awards nominations you’re getting, namely the 5 Aria’s you’re up for and I was going to ask you what your reaction to that was and how you take it?

Um, it’s great to be nominated for things like that, especially in my home country of Australia obviously, because I haven’t been back for so long, and actually they’ve really taken to me and been really king to me. Going back to Australia has been really good. It’s been a really nice surprise actually how much they’ve latched onto it in Australia…I mean awards are nice, it’s a nice validation. I mean I don’t really watch them very often, so I’m kind of indifferent to the actual event, but going back to Australia will be nice so that’s cool.

It seems like from an artists perspective the cool thing about Awards ceremonies is the chance to get together with your peers and see people who you may not get to see all year because of touring commitments or whatever?

Yea, that is cool. It is good to get together and see people and get some booze and just have some fun, but it is kind of like work, it is work doing those things, but it’s kind of like the last day of school vibe.

So how is the tour going?

Well we’ve just pulled in Norwich ready for tonight. It’s going well, yeah this has been a really fun tour. I couldn’t really be happier with it. Each show… it just keeps getting better every night.  You know we’ve been playing together for a while now and we’ve got to the point where we are just really, really comfortable on stage together  as a band you know and it’s just a lot of fun, we enjoy playing the songs and …I don’t know, it’s just good fun.

Do you have anything special planned for the final night of the tour in London? Any special guests?

Nothing too out of the ordinary really, we’ll just have our costumes , oh actually we might do a couple of extra kind of vibe things for the London show. Just kind of people who might be in the audience that we were talking about we might throw some of their songs in just for fun. I don’t want to say too much really.

How do you get on with the day to day business of touring, how do you keep yourselves entertained?

Oh well we just have a lot of fun really, we’re always joking around, I mean me and the backing singers are always singing and making up songs about  everyone. But IO mean I like to read and go to the gym, do some writing, check online to see what there is to do, like keeping up with business stuff on emails and shit like that, but um, you know it actually goes really quickly by the time you wake up, get off the bus do sound check go grab some food.  The day’s pretty much gone.

Do you  like the touring, transient lifestyle, is it something that excites you waking up and seeing a different place everyday, or do you find yourself craving a bit more grounding and some more home time?

I wouldn’t mind some more time at home actually. I haven’t really been at home at any point this whole year so I am kind of getting to the point where, yeah I do love travelling but it’s not like I can’t really desperately can’t wait to go to Norwich to check out the greenery.

You played, well you attempted to play Bestival recently but due to stage subsidence you had to actually pull the show. Do you like the festival circuit or do you prefer to be playing club shows like your current tour, and is that the weirdest gig experience you’ve had so far?

Well we didn’t get to play which is the bad thing about that, but I actually love festivals I actually think that our best show to date was Glastonbury this year. I don’t think we’ve topped that yet, but yeah obviously I mean they are a totally different vibe. I like the small indoor show as well because you’ve got control over the mood and you get to experiment and really show off the nuances of the music a bit more and it’s got a bit more soul and you can pay more attention to the pitch of your voice, whereas with a festival show I’m just trying to be loud and bold and deliver as much as possible so the people 60rows back are getting just as good a show as the people on the barrier.

So what’s next for you once you’ve finished this leg of your UK tour?

Well we’re pretty much touring until February, we’re going to Japan, and doing  a European Tour, spending some time in the States and then doing a festival tour in Australia in the summer, well in their summer.

Cool, Big Day Out?

We’re doing Good Vibrations which is the more kind of electronic, dance, soul kind of vibe tour, which is a really good one actually, I think that last year Kanye West and Calvin Harris headlined it and this year, well this year I’m headlining it and it should be really cool. After that I’m going to get to lay lo for a while and start cooking up the next album which I’m pretty keen to take my time on it.

Ok, so in terms of that new record and writing material do you find that you are the kind of artist who writes constantly, who has ideas on the road etc and so it’s a case that when you come back off a tour you already have an idea of where you’re going next or do you need to be grounded and focused and in one place to do your best work?

I think that I do my best work when I’m relaxed and comfortable. I’m like a creature of comfort when I’m recording because I just work better that way for some reason. I just find it difficult to write on the road. I mean all the pre-production and the recording I’ve done before was done in my bedroom, so you can’t really get more comfortable than that!

Is that something that you want to replicate going forward or do you have a yearning to try the mega studio approach and really go to the opposite end of the spectrum on the next record?

Well my plan is to actually start building my own studio, which is kind of going to focus on when I come back to recording. I mean based in LA you can get cheap studio time so I’m going to do that in the meantime and just concentrate in setting up my own studio. But I mean I do like big studios as well. There’s one we just recorded in a couple of weeks ago in London called…I think it’s called the Toybox or the Toyshop it’s where Oasis recorded ‘What’s the Story Morning Glory’, and it’s just this room full of vintage keyboards and  precussion instruments and so you know maybe starting it in my home studio and finishing it in a big studio like that.

Sounds awesome…so do you have any idea of people you might like to work with, like producers etc? Or even other artists? Would you have any interest in doing something like the Jack White and Alicia Keys  Bond theme duet? Does that kind of collaboration interest you and would it be more of a one off thing or something you might bring under the banner of a Sam Sparro album?

Who was it? Jack White and Alicia Keys, is it true? I haven’t heard that yet actually but I really want to…I mean yeah I would be interested in doing stuff like that, but kind of on the side, I like for my own work, for my body of work like an album to be kind of self contained. Probably even moreso on this record than on the first album really. But I definitely love working with people and doing bits and bobs on the side, like doing something with Adele would be fun or Roisin Murphy, somebody like that.

In terms of videos you’ve had some pretty interesting treatments. How involved do you like to get with that and does your acting past feed into that if at all?

Well I’m kind of a control freak when it comes to that aspect of things as well. Most of the time I’ve been pretty involved with the treatment and working with the Director on the video. Which I enjoy. You know I’ve been very fortunate to work with people who I get on really well . Though theirs is one video which we shot which has never been released and we had to put away.

Which song was that for?

It was for the latest single, ‘21st Century Life’, so we went away and did another one which I was much happier with. But, yea the first one never saw the light of day.

Cool, given the marriage of video and music and the fact that your songs have been used on various TV shows, as well as your fathers soundtrack work, would you ever be interested in doing soundtracks, either as composer or compiler, maybe in an RZA role or Trent Reznor roll like they did on Kill Bill 1+2 or \Lost Highway?

That’s so freaky I like literally watched Kill Bill 2 on the bus this morning. But yea, I actually worked for a music compiler in LA years ago and he worked on some movies and stuff like that. So I can see myself going down that route, I mean I love making mix tapes and DJing so I could definitely see myself scoring a film or doing a soundtrack one day yes.

You’re names obviously attached to the Lindsay Lohan record, do you see yourself working with anyone else like that and would you ever ghost write for people?

Yea, but I haven’t done anything yet. But yea, sure. I mean I’m up for anything as long as it’s fun and interests me. I’m not too proud to turn down anything just based on the project,. But it’s been hard to co-ordinate I mean I’m busy and she’s busy so we’ll see what happens when it happens.

Estelle denuncia la forma en que las discográficas publican un disco y lo venden como el soul más actual, ignorando a otros artistas con mayor talento, con el fin simplemente de comercializar.Y eso incluye a veces vender lo que no es soul, como si lo fuera, de mano de jóvenes blancas sin ningún tipo de trayectoria.

La entrega de premios tendrá lugar el 15 de Octubre. Estelle optará a de momento está nominada a cinco premios: mejor canción (por American Boy), mejor artista femenina del Reino Unido, mejor R&B/Soul, mejor video y mejor album.

So why is it that one travels down the same beaten path without ever knowing just how far away the destination is?  Maybe this is why I have problems with directions.

I also was a pretty big fan of the Killers back in the day, so it's interesting to see them try to return to form. I saw them once on an episode of SNL that I did standby for. Good times.

Cold Open!: Everyone's favorite part of the show, right? The Tina Fey appearance? Man, SNL is really going to go downhill after the election. But hopefully after the election we never have to hear about Sarah Palin again. Queen Latifah! How many random guests can we have in a season? Blake Lively, Cameron Diaz, Chris Parnell, William Shatner, Debbie Phelps and now the Queen. We're only on episode four here, too. It's a sad state of affairs when you know that half of it is because SNL is severely lacking in the female and race departments. "As my mother would say, God love him, but he's a raging maniac." Tina's Sarah Palin is much better than it was last week. I wish that Biden would call him "John" instead of "John McCain," because that's what he did the whole debate. And boy, do I love Sarah Palin's "No, I don't want to answer your questions, but I do want to give a shout out." Get mavericky with it. There really is a problem on the set with people wearing glasses. So many reflections! Sarah Palin loves the Jews and the Cuban food. The talent portion bit is AMAZING. And Sudeikis is being the crazypants Biden we all know and love. Mentions of debate drinking games. Yes, SNL is back. For now. We're back in the era of the 12 minute cold open, and it feels good.

Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals: Wow, Andy Samberg has something to do! "You eat apples right? I produce Entourage." This impression is pretty solid, actually. Color me surprised. I'm proud of ya, Samberg. "A lot of people want to eat you, but I just want to talk to you, okay?"

Mary Poppins: This is a pretty genius idea. Anne Hathaway kind of looks like Julie Andrews, and she has impersonating her down from all of those "act like your grandmama!" scenes in The Princess Diaries. Intriguing. Who knew that she could sing like that? I'm disappointed that Bill Hader doesn't do a better Dick Van Dyke, though. Mary Poppins is a slut!

The Killer - "Human": So I'm pretty sure Anne Hathaway loves the Killers. Or is just very, very enthusiastic. I do love their back from commercial photo. So many plants. Is Brandon Flowers really wearing a fur-trimmed blazer? I enjoy this song. Flowers looks so nervous. So nervous. I feel his voice is mildly restrained because of his nerves. However, I haven't heard the song before, so maybe his voice is always restrained in this song. Wow, here's some awkward dance moves to rival Duffy's last week. Okay, I really like this. Welcome back, Killers.

The Lawrence Welk Show: This is one of those sketches that I suppose you need to be familiar with the original show to enjoy. Kristen is perpetually playing the weird, creepy lady. I can think of about five sketches off the top of my head. It's grating sometimes. Amy Poehler cannot conceal her pregnancy at all, but that's okay. Anne Hathaway should sing in films more often.

C-Span Bailout: I forgot that Sudeikis has replaced Forte as GW Bush. Forte needs a Mark Wahlberg character before he falls off the face of the earth. Wiig is a good Pelosi. I never realized how much they looked alike. Bush's reactions to everyone's stories are phenomenal. He is hiding out in the background and still going all out. Go, Sudeikis. Baby Mama shout out!!! Man, Amy Poehler, that pregnant belly is out of control!

Extreme Challenge Digital Short: Um, this is amazing. In so many different ways. Right down to the random ass "Becoming Jane" joke. Will Forte hates himself more than any of them. Kristen Wiig looks so tough in that outfit, too. When did that happen? Chair pin! Seriously, I could watch this all day. It's a million times better than Space Olympics. Final Tallies -- Andy: 6, Kristen: 4, Will: 2. Although "Do This" had no winner. Way to go, Samberg! You win with your digital short and your Mark Wahlberg impression.

Since I did not see the rest of the episode, including I hear, a sketch with Jason Sudeikis singing (my favorite thing ever! he has a great voice..), I will leave you with a video of him playing the trombone for Ben Folds and Regina Spektor. You can watch it if you fastforward to the last segment here. Besides the fact that Ben Folds is awesome, Regina Spektor is precious and a drummer randomly walks on in the middle, do not take your eyes off of Sudeikis. It's times like these that make me wonder why he isn't a million times more famous.

the new single from adele's "19" album is her take on bob dylan's classic "to make you feel my love", and it is exquisite.  a whole lot more peeps are going to know who she is very soon as she'll be the music guest on the october 11 episode of saturday night live.  i imagine she'll do this song as well as "chasing pavements", her first single with the wicked cool video.

For a whole week, the only CD that's gotten any play in my house and my car is 19 by Adele.

I first heard this young Brit, only 20 yrs old, on The View 2 wks ago. I wasn't even watching the tv, it was watching me while I surfed the Net, catching up on blogs, news, sipping my coffee, when suddenly I heard this voice. A voice so refreshing and original I had to pay attention. I dropped everything else that had my attention - even my coffee, which is a pretty big deal - to devote the next 4 minutes to this girl singing with this VOICE. And I was hooked.

Since that day, my neighbors and people driving by me have seen/heard me screaming:

Should I give up

or should I just keep chasing pavements

even if it leads nowhere?

And would it be a waste

even if I knew my place

should I leave it there?

at the top of my lungs. That's my jam. Can't get enough of it.

Adele lists her musical influences as Jill Scott, Etta James, Billy Bragg, Peggy Lee, Jeff Buckley and The Cure and you can hear a little of each in every song on the CD, 19. You'll be more than satisfied; there's not one song I skip over. Every cut is a hit.

First off, of course, Kings of Leon Only By The Night. I love this album, can't put it down. Use Somebody is such an epic song. These guys deserve to be big in America so badly, and I definitely think that this album will push them over and make them huge here. 

This one caught me a bit by surprise. I have kept Adele's 19 on my "Must Listen CD stack" for a little while, but I finally got around to it and it's great. I am addicted to Hometown Glory and Chasing Pavement, she has such a great voice, and it's really refreshing to see her style coming back. She is like a more chill Amy Winehouse. 

The All-American Rejects new single Gives You Hell is GREAT. I hate these catchy tunes that get stuck in your head all day, but this one is just a guilty pleasure. Definitely give it a listen.

Finally, the new Cold War Kids album Loyalty to Loyalty. I've only gotten past the first 4 tracks, but so far what I hear is awesome. I love this band (and I want the street cred for calling their awesomeness before they got big.) So definitely check that out.
