The most popular topic over the last two days has been Google Chrome, the brand new BETA web browse

The most popular topic over the last two days has been Google Chrome, the brand new BETA web browser from Google released on the 2nd of September. There is a lot of hype over it on whether it's the first nail in Microsoft's grave but this post is purely for the review of the product itself.

Here is a video I took of myself using the browser for those who haven't decided whether or not to test it for themselves:

As you can see the browser has a lot of cool features, some new, some that Internet Explorer and Firefox both have. I will cover a few of the main features and write my view on each one.

The Address bar. The address bar (known as the omnibox) may look very usual bit it implements several things at once, it allows you to type in your URL as normal but as you type it shows you your web history (what you've visited before that uses the same characters as you are currently typing in the bar). It allows you to type just words into the bar and you can google search the words, it removes the need to install a google search add on. It also suggests completely new sites that you may like to take a look at.

Tabs. Like both Internet explorer and Firefox, Google Chrome uses tabs so you do not have to keep opening separate windows. Whats cool about these tabs is that you can drag and drop them into other windows! Also, if you have just made Chrome your default browser you can still open a new tab with the famous "CTRL+T" shortcut. If you look at the task manager you will notice several "chrome.exe" processes depending on the amount of tabs that are open, this is to help you keep the rest of your tabs running if one was to fail. I find this very handy.

Incognito mode. Internet Explorer has this but either way its still a handy thing for Chrome to have! If you are using a computer that is used by many other people then you may want to use this, this mode allows no recognition of what you have viewed or searched. So if you are buying a present for someone and you are afraid that when they use the computer next, they'll see your web history and ruin the surprise, then Incognito mode is the special feature for you!

Developer tools. If you click the page button next to the Address bar you will find the developer tools under "Developer". When you usually view sources of pages it opens up a little notepad file, but if you got to Developer > View Source it opens it in a new tab instead of a notepad file. You can also find a javascript console here.

Application shortcuts. There are many web applications out there that I love such as the Google Reader. Instead of using the browser to locate them you can click the Page button next to the address bar > Create application shortcuts. You can send the application shortcut to your desktop, start menu or quick launch. And when you want to open the application just double click the shortcut.

I believe that the five aforementioned Features are the best features that Google Chrome offers. Chrome is a much faster process than Firefox, I myself grew tired of the amount of memory Firefox would take up. Chrome takes up a fair amount, but still a lot less than Firefox. Those who wish to transfer from their browser to Chrome can download Chrome here. After downloading it, launch Chrome and click the spanner and go to "Import bookmarks & settings" for an easy transfer of your important links.

I recommend using Google Chrome even if its just to test it, it is also based upon WebKit so Google decided to make everything Open Source which will allow for lots of developer tools made by ordinary people. The only thing I don't like is that Chrome doesn't have any plug-ins or RSS feeds, however it is BETA so I'm sure it will be done in the future!

If you'd like to see the comic google made to introduce its browser, click here!

Google released their newest attack on Microsoft today, an Internet browser called....Chrome. How does it stack up? Well, I've only tried it for a few minutes, and I already like it better than Internet Explorer. Admittedly, I've been a Mozilla Firefox guy for a quite a long time. I still haven't decided if I like Chrome over Firefox though.

One feature that I like quite a lot is the "start" page. It displays six "screen shots" of your browsing history, as in your most visited sites. This provides quick and easy access on start up. Another nice thing about Chrome so far is that it seems to be much, much less of a resource hog. Pages even seem to load faster, although that part might just be my imagination. Tabs are very easy to navigate on Chrome, decent security features, and searching through the address bar are all nice features as well. Apparently, you can search each site through the address bar as well, but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet. I'll pop up an update on here at a later date after I've had an opportunity to play a little more.

Selamat mencoba (wp).

Have you seen this happen (or do you do this)? Now this happened a few months ago, so the details are a little sketchy.

A user called to say she couldn't get to her credit union's web site any more. She thought it had been blocked by recent installation of an Internet proxy. She gave me the address of the credit union, and I successfully browsed to it - of course. So I told her I go up to her office to see what was going on (read: to see what she was doing wrong).

She opened IE and attempted to get to credit union's web site. But hold on! She wasn't typing the credit union's web address in the address bar, she was entering the name of credit union in the search bar! For some reason her default search bar had been changed, so the search bar no longer auto-completed the name, or the new search engine didn't show the credit union at the top of page - I forget exactly. Why she didn't use the address bar, was a mystery to me. She's not one of the company's brightest, so I figured that was the reason.

But today, I was reading a post from ReadWriteWeb talking about how users are more apt to use the search bar than the address bar to get to web sites, based on data from traffic analytics company, Hitwise. Really? Well, that at least explains part of what I saw.

On a related note, I love the new address bar in Firefox 3. You really don't need to type web URL's any more. I can type "the adven" in the address and get right to my blog, The Adventures of AlisterComputeron. Or even better, I can type "Google Calendar" to quickly, and easily access to my calendar.

So perhaps Firefox figured out that users were using the search bar to get to web sites, and built that idea into the address bar.

From time to time we receive an email in our Customer Service Department from ‘worried of Berkhamp

From time to time we receive an email in our Customer Service Department from ‘worried of Berkhampstead’ or ‘concerned of Benalmadena’ because they cannot find their website on the Internet when they enter in their full domain name. Don’t panic, the solution is simple.

We have found that the problem is normally confusion between the Address Bar and the Google search box or other Search Engine’s search box.

The Address Bar is located at the top of your screen. It is where the URL, or website address appears. A search box, like the Google search box, is the place where you type terms to search for.

For example, if you are looking for a website that you know the address (URL) of like www.independentowners.com you would type that address into the Address Bar to reach that website directly. If you do not know the exact address you would type Independent Owners into the search field and the Search Engine would give you a list of results to help you find what you are looking for. A search box is also where you might type ‘seafood restaurants in Marbella’ to find a restaurant that serves seafood in Marbella. See the graphic provided below.

[wp_caption id="attachment_108" align="alignnone" width="500" caption=" "][/wp_caption]

Why can’t I find my website?

Sometimes owners that type their domain into a search box generate no results, meaning they cannot find their website. Owners of older, more established websites do not see or recognise this as a problem. Concerns generally arise from Members who have young websites.

The reason for this is young websites have yet to be recognised by Google, Yahoo! and other major Search Engines because that takes time; sometimes weeks, sometimes more.

How do I find my website?

To avoid any moments of panic we recommend that Members, especially those new to the IndependentOwners.com community, type their domain into the Address bar at the top of their browser. Type in your full URL ie, www.mydomain.com, in the Address Bar to navigate to your website.

As your website becomes more established and you have created links to it from advertising, from forums and/or from listing sites (see more about this under My Optimization and the Website Marketing Guide, both found in your CMA) the Search Engines will begin to recognise your domain and will direct you to it if you enter it in to the search box.

Remember, the Address Bar is there for you to type the domain address of the website you wish to visit. Use it instead of the search box to avoid confusion! Better yet to access your website, simply click the Home icon on your IndependentOwners Toolbar. It’s that easy!

Happy summer rentals all!

The

Did you know that you can use the location bar of your browser for more than just web addresses?

The sections below provide instructions on increasing the utility of the Firefox location bar.

Goal: Simplified Searching and Browsing

Merge your Firefox location bar and quick search box into one powerful, customized location bar (sometimes called the "awesome bar" in Firefox 3).

[caption id="attachment_124" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Here is the Firefox location bar, search engine box, and toolbar customization menu, all shown as default in Firefox 3. This post describes how to consolidate these two boxes."][/caption]

Firefox allows users to create and perform highly tailored keyword searches from the address/location bar (no, not the search engine box in the top right, but the location bar containing "http://..."). I prefer to use just the location bar, since I get a little distracted with too many text boxes. With a little effort, you can consolidate search and location entry.

Higher Web Productivity

The "awesome bar" will allow you to zip through the web using personal keyboards. Just jump to the location bar, type in a location or any number of quick searches you add (see below), and you may be impressed just how quickly you can pull up on-demand info using this approach. Teach your fingers at least one shortcut to get to the location bar; the following keyboard shortcuts will work (within Firefox):

F6

Ctrl/Cmd+L

Alt+D

Ctrl/Cmd+T, which opens a new tab and places your cursor at the location bar

(See Lifehacker for more Firefox keyboard shortcuts.)

Remove the Search Engine Box

The first thing I do to simplify my browsing experience in Firefox is get rid of the search engine box next to the location bar, so that I can focus on my own searches which use the location bar. To remove it, right-click on the menu bar, click "Customize ...," then drag the search engine box into the newly opened window.

Import Useful Quick Searches

I used a Lifehacker post (Geek to Live: Fifteen Firefox Quick Searches) to help get me started. I tailored it to my taste; you should do the same. You can check out the Lifehacker post for their version, or continue here with my version. Open the target bookmark files in your browser to see the difference.

Right-click on the link (here) my quick search bookmarks file, choose "Save Link As...," and make a note of where you save the file on your computer.

Go to the Firefox Bookmarks menu, and choose "Organize Bookmarks..." or "Manage Bookmarks..." (depending on your version of Firefox).

From the Library or Bookmarks Manager menu, choose import from either the "Import and Backup" menu or the file menu (depending on your version). Import the HTML file you saved in step 1. You can safely delete this file after import.

Note that if you already have keyword searches defined, you may need to check that no two bookmarks expect the same keyword; this may cause conflict.

Quick Google Searches

By default, Firefox performs a Google search if you type into the location bar terms which are not possible web locations (e.g. "example.com") and do not match your keyword searches (e.g. "lh firefox"). You can rely on that, but you will get more consistent results if you explicitly define a Google quick search with a keyword (I use "go" or "google").

Easily Add Any Search

You can easily expand your keyword searching while you browse the web. Whenever you see a search box on a web page,

right-click within the search box, select "Add a Keyword for this Search ..."

add a name and a keyword

designate the "Create in" folder to be Quick Searches -> Personal or your favorite folder for personal quick searches.

(See Mozilla's explanation for more details.)

Video Tutorial

[Firefox only] I stumbled into this application the other day and decided to give it a whirl - and boy, is it ever handy. It places the power of Google Search services such as image, news and web search in the address bar of Firefox to allow for easy searching from any web site you please.

The coolest feature though, is the fact that you can restrict the results to a specific domain such as "en.wikipedia.org" which will only display google results for that web site. Also, you have the ability to place your favorite favicon in the results of the drop down menu. Check out the video below to see the add-on in action.

You may have noticed that, the Firefox versions that ship for Linux, don`t have the ability to select the url in the address bar on single-click of a mouse, whereas this is set by default in Windows versions of Firefox. If, you feel this feature should be there in the linux version of firefox too, the do the following:

1) type about:config in the browser`s address bar and hit the return key(Enter Key)

2) Then click on I`ll be careful, I promise button that shows up on the next page.

3) In the field that says Filter, key in the following word: clickSelectsAll

4)You will see that two entries are shown now viz. browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll and browser.urlbar.doubleClickSelectsAll. Setting the value of the former to true by double clicking on it will enable Single-CLick url select option and setting the value of the later to true will enable Double-CLick url select option.

5) Restart Firefox, and you are done.

PS: This works on Firefox for Windows too, if you wanna do a vice-versa :-)

I downloaded firefox 3 on download day and am very happy with the improved version. I found a weird behaviour this morning. Suddenly whatever i typed in the address bar started appearing right to left. For example, amazon.com appeared as moc.nozama ! It was even trying to open that page! I have a doubt that this behaviour was caused due to the music search site www.owlmm.com. The site tries to load a java music player and this was causing the browser to freeze for sometime. I opened the same in internet explorer and there was no problem. There is no info regarding this on www.owlmm.com. Have to wait and see if they fix this problem soon...

Fix: After installing Windows XP SP3, the Address Bar is Removed from the main taskbar

From the Windows XP General newsgroup, edit for French to English translation issues and brevity:

From the Windows XP General newsgroup, edit for French to English translation issues and brevity:

I just installed SP3 using Windows Update (I had XP SP2 Pro fully
updated). Everything went fine, I restarted the PC and apparently everything
fine after the desktop showed up (no error messages, etc). But after
examining my system I found the following:

The address bar is removed in the main taskbar, so I triedrRight clicking
on the taskbar > Toolbars> but notice that the Address option has been
removed in SP3.

To restore the Address toolbar in the taskbar, in the %windir%\system32 directory, replace the SP3 version of browseui.dll with the SP2 version. Windows File Protection gets in the way (and so does explorer.exe for the Windows desktop and some other processes). The workaround is to use the PendingFileRenameOperations key in the registry.

Values under this key specify which files to move, replace,
or delete when Windows starts up. Get the PendMoves.zip file from
SysInternals (now a Microsoft company) which contains the
pendmoves.exe and movefile.exe utilities. Pendmoves tells you what is
already in that registry key to get renamed on the next Windows startup
(afterwhich this key gets cleared). movefile lets you add entries to
this registry key.

If you haven't yet installed Windows XP SP3, save a copy of the file:

Start - Run - Cmd
md c:\backup
copy "%windir%\system32\browseui.dll" c:\temp\

f you have already installed SP3, you will have to get a copy of
browseui.dl_ (ends with the underscore character) from your backups,
from a Windows SP2 install CD, from another of your hosts still running
Windows XP SP2, or from a friend that you really trust. If you get the
compressed browseui.dl_ file, decompress it:

expand [drive:[path]]browseui.dl_ c:\backup\browseui.dll

Now that you have the old version of the browseui.dll file, you need to
replace the SP3 version with the old version. Run the following
command in a DOS shell:

copy c:\windows\system32\browseui.dll c:\windows\system32\browseui_sp3.dll
movefile c:\backup\browseui.dll c:\windows\system32\dllcache\browseui.dll
movefile c:\backup\browseui.dll c:\windows\system32\browseui.dll
<reboot>

The assumptions are: movefile.exe is in the current directory or found
by the PATH environment variable and that you saved the old version of
browseui.dll under c:\backup.

Do NOT use "%windir%\system32\browseui.dll" for the destination since the windir
environment variable won't be defined when the move operation is
performed during Windows startup. In the above, I save a copy of the
SP3 version of browseui.dll just in case it is found later that using
the old version causes problems and I have to revert back to using the
SP3 version along with having to sacrifice the Address toolbar.

While this gets back the Address toolbar in the Windows taskbar, the
browseui.dll file is used by lots of different functions within Windows.
So it is possible that reverting to the old version could cause problems
with other functionality.

Intrebare: Doriti breadcrumbs pentru Windows Explorer in XP?

Gata!

If you are experiencing problems with your address bar missing, there are a few different things tha

If you are experiencing problems with your address bar missing, there are a few different things that you can try to get things back on track. The resolution for two of the most common scenarios can be found on Microsoft’s website. We are going to go over these for you now.

First off, if you are using Internet Explorer 6 and the address bar still shows up find in windows explorer, then this issue may occur if the Toolbar settings are set to remove the Address bar, or if there is a problem with a registry key. Here is what you will need to do to fix this problem.

Start by checking to see if the Toolbar settings are correct. Once you have started Internet Explorer, click on view and then point to Toolbars. If there is not a check mark next to Address Bar, then click on Address Bar to place on there. If there is a check mark there then remove it and re-add it using the same technique. If the address bar is in the upper right corner and is not available, then right click on Address and click Lock the Toolbar to remove the check mark. Now you can click on Address and drag the Address bar to where you want it. If this has not resolved your problem, then you will need to try the next method.

There could be a problem with the WebBrowser registry key, and so we will have to delete it. Remember to backup your registry in case you accidentally chance something else and cause serious problems with your computer.

To get started click on Start, Run and then type regedit and hit OK. You are going to need to locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar. Now that you are here, right click on WebBrowser and delete it. Then click Yes to confirm. Now you are going to want to open up an Internet Explorer window, click on view and then point to Toolbars. The toolbar default settings are now restored and you should once again have an Address bar!

Another problem that can be encountered is when you do not have an Address bar in Internet Explorer or in the Windows Explorer. This is also caused by corrupt values in the Windows registry. Remember, once again, before doing anything in the registry to back it up in case you make and error.

To fix this problem you are going to have to edit the registry to remove the corrupt values. Start by closing all Internet Exploere and Windows Explorer windows and start the registry editor. Now find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar. For Windows Explorer find the Explorer sub-key and open it. In the right window pane, locate the ITBarLayout value and delete it. For Internet Explorer locate the WebBrowser sub-key and open it. Now in the right window pane locate ITBarLayout and delete it. Now you can quit the registry editor.

Now you can open any affected programs, such as Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer and verify that your Menu bar or Toolbar has been restored. If not you will need to close all Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer windows and repeat the steps above. Then locate the ShellBroswer sub-key, open it and delete the ITBarLayout value there. Also note that any Toolbar customizations that you have done will be lost.
