Adam is my colleague's son and is working in our firm this week. I think he has a great look and so luckily his mum was able to convince him to let me take some shots (all in the hope of getting some posing experience). We went to Smithfield Market, which is just by the office here in London, but which is unfortunately falling into a state of disrepair. Adam was great, joined in the fun and didn't mind the hecklers shouting "Cheese!" out of a car window as they drove past!

I just thought I'd post this one quickly ... more to follow.

Hey folks!

Hey folks!

I was feeling a bit run down the past couple of days...lots of day job stuff that apparently I'd rather think about at night than sleep...and it puts me in a bit of a "flat" mood. I wouldn't say depressed, more like a lack of energy or enthusiasm. You know how it is when you just can't think of anything to look forward to?

Well, I was in that state when I read Cartoonist Jay Stephen's "Monsterama" blog, only to find that he's posting from a sanitarium, where he checked himself in to help cope with depression and anxiety attacks. I then went to a good friend and fellow pulp creator Tom Floyd's "Captain Spectre" page to read about his frustration with not being able to put out work regularly due to his day job, and how depressed it makes him feel. I remember also a marker demo Adam Huges was giving where his partner Allison remarked about how he "was never satisfied" with how his work turned out.

Now, none of these folks are "on the down and out" as it were. Jay's cartoon "The Secret Saturdays" is being produced by the Cartoon Network, Tom has a fantastic, long-running comic series that's great fun to read, and Adam Hughes is.....well, he's frickin Adam Hughes.

So, what's up there? What is it about living a creative life that makes you susceptable to cutting your ear off in a fit of romantic angst? For me, I'm just about to finish up a pretty darned cool GZ short, and have had lots of great responses from fans and publishers.....why so serious?)

Maybe there's something to the intensity of the thing that is so draining or nerve-wracking. Like Tom said in his blog, I literally think about GZ almost all the time...I go to sleep thinking about it. Maybe it's logical that that sort of focus would cause you to hit the occasional, emotional wall? I don't know.

The good thing for me is: I know that it's just the internal weather...and like any weather, it will pass. So, tonight, instead of going home and plunking down in front of a movie, I'll plunk down in front of the easel and work more on that last page. Sometimes, all it takes is showing up just to feel better.

Talk to you soon!

-Dave

San Diego Comic Con doth approach and I am swamped with all kinds of work (aren't you glad I don't blog about that, dear reader?), so today's Storm Sunday is short and sultry. I've noticed that my top posts are the ones that have focused on the work of Frank Cho, Patrick Fillion, Arthur Adams and Adam Hughes which leads me to believe that we're all obsessed with sexy people (or rather, sexy renderings of them). I was so happy when I found this piece by Adam Hughes. I've never seen an artist take up so much of the page for just a character close-up quite like this before. I like the tilt of the head back and the heavy eyelids with the spiky eyelashes. The tiara is angled so it becomes more of a frame than usual and those lips are gorgeous!

This DC Comics promotional piece has been getting a lot of buzz on the internet and if you're a hardcore comics fan you've probably already seen it, but I just had to post it on my own little strand of the web.

I love how Hughes has really invested the drawings of each character with touches of their signature styles and character traits. I only wish that Marc Andreyko's Manhunter was more of an A list character to be included. For more of Adam Hughes amazing artwork, visit his site here.

From left to right we have Catwoman, Oracle (in front of her), Zatanna, Black Canary, Power Girl, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Vixen, Batwoman (seated), Poison Ivy & Harley Quinn. My only quibble is that my girl Helena Bertinelli, the Huntress, is missing from the line-up.

This Sunday I'd like to share a piece of artwork drawn by Adam Hughes. It's more of a sketch and that's what I love about it. It's almost a gesture drawing with some sharply defined angles. Ororo really looks likes she's flying. So many artists aren't able to really capture that flight of fantasy, but Hughes nails it. I think it's partly due to how he's positioned her arms (especially the wrists) and how Storm's cape gives her ballast.

Hughes also gets extra kudos from me for having Storm's tiara frame her face in such a bold fashion. The design is reminiscent of how Dave Cockrum and John Byrne made it famous. I'm sure Adam Hughes has drawn Storm much more than this, but I don't have any other pics of his work of Ororo in my favorites. However, this rendering is one of my favorite depictions of Storm in general, not just of this artist. And although I'm curious to see how it would look fully inked and colored, part of its appeal lies in its unfinished state.

I've read comic books my whole life. I still read them. It's the only magazine I read cover to cover. My all time favorite superhero...Daredevil. I'm sure I screw-up the marketing department at Marvel Comics when I type 42 yrs. old and female when renewing my yearly subscription.

It's lonely though, this adult fascination of comics and superheroes. I try to explain the difference between a comic book and a graphic novel to my girlfriend, to no avail, and venture into comic books stores alone. I wave at my gay-adult-female friends who point at Pottery Barn where they will be when I finally emerge, and look at their straight-teenage-male counterparts that have their noses in comics just like I will for the next hour or two.

I can talk about the art of comics until I turn blue and fly in tights, but no one will listen...until now.

Because someone at the Metropolitan Museum of Art likes superheroes...and they've just opened a new exhibit:

Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy. On exhibit at the Met until September 1st

...

From the website:

Since the first appearance of Superman in 1938, the superhero has exercised a powerful influence over our collective imagination, serving as avatars or conduits for our hopes, dreams, and desires. Until relatively recently...superheroes have often been dismissed as frivolous and superficial, but their apparent triviality is the very thing that gives them the ability to address serious issues.

Through the years, the superhero has been used to embody...our social and political realities. At the same time, it has been used to represent concepts reflective of sexuality and corporeality through idealized, objectified, and hyperbolic visualizations of the human body. Constantly redefined and reworked according to popular canons of beauty, superheroes embody the superlative.

...

Also on the Met's publication site are some books that might be interesting:

...

"Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" By Andrew Bolton, with an essay by Michael Chabon

Fashion designers have always been fascinated by the idea of how clothing can transform the body, and even the perceived character of the wearer. This volume explores the symbolic and metaphorical associations between fashion and the superhero. The power of fashion, like the power of the superhero, lies in its ability to transcend the humdrum and commonplace. This volume examines the influence on fashion of the costumes of superheroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Captain America, and Spiderman, as represented in comic books, film, and television. The suits and capes of these superheroes not only proclaim their amazing powers, but also provoked new designs in avant-garde haute couture, ready-to-wear, and high-performance sportswear. Included are movie costumes as well as radical fashions in which designers go beyond iconography to explore issues of identity, sexuality, and patriotism. The introductory text features an essay entitled Secret Skin: An Essay in Unitard Theory by Michael Chabon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

...

"DC Comics Covergirls" By Louise Simonson, foreword by Adam Hughes

With the introduction of Wonder Woman in 1941, DC comics offered up the first of many comic book heroines, who have no trouble being both beautiful and strong willed. Tracing their evolution from Wonder Woman to female-driven spin-offs such as Supergirl and Catwoman to today's girl-power series like Birds of Prey, this book is a smart, fun, and in-depth look at the greatest super heroines of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

...

For me finally the respect I deserve and possibly new graphic novel, and for my girlfriend...spring napkins from Pottery Barn.

¡Bingo!
