Years ago my brother-in-law introduced me to his favorite cable show -- a complete chauvinistic, in-your-face, weekly dialogue between Adam Carolla and some other guy, who has his own show now; I can't remember his name.  But I do remember that it came complete with a "Girls on Trampoline" feature...

Well, Carolla has redeemed himself.  I read a review and Netflix'ed The Hammer last week, and my wife and I both got some good belly laughs out of it...worth a slot in your queue.

And still wondering where Jesse Jackson and Sharpton are... and when newly reprogrammed mommy will emerge.

Where did they do with Al Gore? haha   O yeah...  And then there's Jimmy Carter that referred to Obama as... that boy?  What?

Still don't wanna live in China or in that America... and hopefully straight Mex McCain will dump Carly Fiorina and grow some conservative values... yeah right.

Will seriously watch what Nader can put together this time....

Listening to the Adam Carolla show this morning they were doing a regular segment called Second Date Update and the guy said he hadn't called the girl back (after sleeping with her TWICE during a church retreat weekend, by the way) because she was "a little bit homely in the face".

See how much funnier that is than if he had just called her homely?

I rest my case.

On August 21, 2008 Adam Carolla rants about Tim Kaine's interview on CNN. He knows he is going to be interviewed about the potential vice president for Barack Obama, but refuses to answer any question.

as you may well know i spend a good chunk of my day listening to KNDD, 107.7 the end. they have the adam carolla show in the morning, and the Church of Lazlo in the afternoon. well, they did have the Church of Lazlo in the afternoon, but apparently the Church moved back to wherever they came from (Kansas City??) and now Harms is filling in until they get an afternoon replacement.

coincidence? i think not.

Back to the Man Show with ye, Adam.

. . . By ABC/Disney, no less. Seems the powers-that-be in the Mouse House took a strong disliking to Evil’s campaign against Mickey’s write-in candidacy. And have chosen to respond by shamelessly ripping off the Evil’s material.

The setup: Evil regularly downloads ESPN’s podcasts. (ESPN is owned by ABC, in case you didn’t know.) One of his favorites is “The B.S. Report”, hosted by one Bill Simmons, a.k.a. the Sports Guy.

Well, lo and behold: during the July 22 podcast, Herr Simmons and funnyman Adam Carolla totally coincidentally got into a conversation about a song you might have . . . hmm . . . liked once, but have heard it so much now that you . . . hmm . . . don’t ever want to again. Would like to banish it, perhaps?

Sound familiar, FOEs?

Evil was willing to let this slide until Mr. Carolla then posited his one song never to hear again. Was it “Take My Breath Away”? Something by the BeeGees? “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins”? Noooo.

It was “Hotel” fucking “California”.

Wow, fellas! No one has ever written about that!

Now. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Yeah—and clichés are the lamest form of bullshit.

But, you say, isn’t it possible Adam Carolla came to this conclusion independently of the Evil? Perhaps his opinion even predates the Evil’s?

Impossible! In every cosmology worth a damn, Evil is said to have sprung forth at the moment of creation or soon after. Whereas this Carolla character dribbled from his mother’s loins a mere 44 years ago.

It only got worse when Evil then listened to the “Thundering Herd” podcast from July 25, when host Colin Cowherd’s assistant noted that—gasp!—the Vatican has decreed it’s OK to believe in aliens! Way to stay on top of things, guys!

Clearly the ESPN research team is mainlining the Evil. And Evil understands—these poor souls have to provide content for multiple networks, radio programs, espn.com, and now former Man Show hosts. These humble drones struggle to find ways to make things like bowling, Golden Tee, and competitive walking sound interest while enduring a rain of “Boo-ya!”s from Stuart Scott. So the Evil feels a certain level of . . . hmm . . . it isn’t compassion . . . pity, maybe? . . . for them.

That said, the Evil would appreciate a little attribution, guys. Rip off if you will, but don’t forget the Evil.

so i did. and i got on the phone with the man. i told him that i too am a carpenter, and that i too want to get in to doing radio talk, and he told me that i should go down to one of the local stations and just see what i can get as far as work- answering the phones, doing carpentry stuff, whatever. he said that was how he got started in the business. (we also discussed possible ways of committing suicide on the construction site, due to working alone for too long) if you want to hear the 5 minute section of the show, you can try and download it HERE but i'm not sure if that will work...

anyway, that's what i'm gonna try to do. i'm also going to centerpoint for an orientation to their career counseling services this evening, and trying to get my stupid computer fixed, so it will be an eventful night.

i figure i might as well try to get something going on the radio- i think would be good at it. i'll keep you posted.

I stumbled upon an interesting phenomenon this week end.  On Saturday, no less than 12 of my Facebook friends had status updates telling me how great "The Dark Knight" was.  More specifically, many of them singled out Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker as the highlight of the film.  After finally seeing the film yesterday, I can say that I thought it was a very good film, and Ledger put forth the best Joker performance to date (the second best being Mark Hamil's portrayal in the animated series.)

What I found interesting, was the uniting force that this film, and people's affection for Ledger carries with it. All summer long at my job at Universal I have seen TONS of people wearing Dark Knight t-shirts with Ledger's image.   It brings to mind the kind of Kurt Cobain style idol-worship I saw as a teenager in the 90's.

In a year where the most hated president in my lifetime will leave office, and may be replaced by the first African-American president in history, the most unifying symbol my generation has found this summer is an actor playing a comic book character.

Kinda makes you think, but as Adam Carolla might say, "You can't judge."

I'll try to express Carolla's thoughts as best as I can remember.  The appearance of the clips he played was that the drugs had ended the careers of one or both of these men and that if they could get off drugs they'd have a shot at returning to their earlier success.  Carolla didn't think that was it.  He talked about the often expressed view of former child stars that they have been type cast based on past performances.  He didn't think that was it.  Instead, it was a lack of talent that kept them from succeeding.

A child star often wins "the cosmic lottery" and is the right person for the time and place of their success.  But when that time and place is over it's up to them whether they can maintain it.  Carolla talked about Johnny Depp and George Clooney, both successes early in life but neither stuck in a typecast because they both had great talent.

And, if you have great talent the other key is hard work.  He pointed to Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel who both created something that was uniquely theirs and worked really hard to get it.

But, if you don't have great talent and you don't work really hard at it, you may have one time success but it isn't going to last and you shouldn't expect it to.

My thought was what about the average guy who doesn't win the cosmic lottery?  Does that mean he'll never have success?  Does everyone have great talent at something?

The other comment that I heard was from Erwin MacManus at Mosaic.  He was doing a Q & A with people at the gathering as part of a series on wisdom.  One young lady asked about finding your passion, living a fully engaged life and success.  She asked, "What if you're working really hard, for years, at what you love but things never go the way you thought they would?  Do you just keep going?"

Erwin explored the difference between passion and an end result we want.  He gave the example of a world class violinist.  Someone may have a passion to be a world class violinist but hates to practice.  They're never going to reach their goal.  "The way you know you're living out the right passion is that you love the discipline that brings greatness.  If you don't love the discipline that brings greatness in that field you are pursuing the wrong passion."

"What if you love the discipline?" the girl asked.

"If you love the discipline then even if you don't get the ultimate end you will not have wasted your life because you will have fulfilled your passions."

And I think that's the answer for the average guy.  If you are an average guy who has a passion for acting then you will find opportunities to act whether or not you achieve fame, fortune or recognition.  Carolla is right.  It is talent and hard work that bring success (in a place where there is real opportunity anyway).  But MacManus is also right.  If you define success as external, the end dream, then it may be unrealistic and pursuit will bring despair.  But, if success to you means the act of pursuing your dream then trying is succeeding even if you are only average.

anyway, the Hammer rules. mel and i watched it, and, although she claims to only like it 25% as much as i did, i liked it a full 278%, so that's still pretty good.

i listen to this guy Carolla every morning at work. yeah, it's the guy who used to do "love line" and "the man show". those were both ok, i guess, but i DIG the radio show. plus, i'm lonely at work and i like to pretend that we are friends and hanging out talking with interesting funny people (depressing).

so- rent this thing. here's the deal- he's a carpenter in the movie, who decides to re-enter the world of boxing after quitting his job. the thing is- he was actually a carpenter and boxer (for real) in his earlier days, so that makes the movie that much better.

i laughed a lot. i drank 2 giant beers. it was great.

Adam followed Kathy Griffin on Leno. They talked about some funny stuff, including the Women's US olympic softball team.
