When I was in high school i had quite a few friends, mostly because I was in the band, and that time

When I was in high school i had quite a few friends, mostly because I was in the band, and that time in my life holds fond memories for me. I'm fortunate in that regard because I know a lot of people whose high school memories are ones of angst, dislike mixed with feelings of inferiority and inability to fit in.

But being a band geek, i had a tribe of accepting friends who never made me feel like the dork I really was.... perhaps "still am" is more accurate.

But there were four girls who were not in the band that I also ran around with and they accepted me into their little circle. One overweight, rather bubbly and quasi popular girl...Lisa T. One very overweight, very bubbly and not so popular girl... Dena. One very tall (six feet) lanky diamond in the rough drill team member... Lisa L. and another drill team member Phyliss, who had moderate success breaking into the popular crowd until she moved away our junior year.

I haven't been very good at keeping in touch with these women although they have maintained contact relatively well between themselves. They say i fell off the face of the earth after college which I guess is kind of true since I have only seen them about once every five years.

We recently had one of these mini reunions and through the exchange of emails addresses and phone numbers I have been able to keep in touch with them much better. And so email jokes, prayer chains, pictures of kids' birthday parties, pictures of pets, vacations and milestones periodically pop up in my inbox.

I received an email just recently from Lisa T. that was a forward of an original message subjected: "update on Dena." It was a message originally sent by Dena on June 25 that I never received.

My heart fell, my stomach did flips and I thought i was going to be sick. I have been so worried about receiving news that Dena might be in the hospital or something. I mean she is so extremely overweight that I can't help but think it puts a strain on her heart.

and it was
about a strain on her heart.

Not because of the burden of her weight but because her almost 20 year marriage is ending.... it is dying.

I feel so bad for her. I feel so very bad for her that I want to race out to Austin and give her a hug and just be there with her. I know she needs her friends right now but other obligations prevent from being able to do that. I know she is hurting as her marriage writhes in pain.

But in some sort of karmic, circle of life, reincarnation-esque sort of way....

[Deist says somewhat timidly] I met someone....
It's hard for me as i write this to feel joyful comparing the budding of a new relationship to one that is ending

but I am happy....
she makes me happy although I am cautiously optimistic.

I met her the day Dena sent the original message. And at the risk of putting the blogger's curse on it (you know what I'm talking about. Posting about a new found relationship only to put the hex of doom on it by doing so), I am going to say...

well, I am going to say.... I'm cautiously optimistic and and curious to see what becomes of me and The Deist-ette from Texas.

Yes, my friends, believe it or not (i can hardly believe it myself) she holds the same view of God and walks a similar spiritual path (she has buddhism, UUism, christian and earth centered sprinkles all mixed into her walk) AND she's from Texas.

Wish me luck and please pray for my friend Dena that she makes it through this tough time in her life with resilience.

Woohoo! Finished the last bunch of rhythm tracks late last night. We actually re-did most of the gui

Woohoo! Finished the last bunch of rhythm tracks late last night. We actually re-did most of the guitar parts in the pretty epic track that'll be the last track on the album. It's a slightly slower song, but has some tight parts that are actually harder to play right than many of the faster riffs. Especially one of the really heavy riffs was kinda rushed for both guitars in the first take, slightly ahead of the beat, so we simply turned up the metronome and played it really nice and tight. Everything flowed nicely last night, and we also ended re-doing the chorus parts for both guitars: when we first recorded them, we were kinda struggling to get both guitars to sound both tight and 100% in tune (some big chords there, they can easily sound out of tune on an electric if you're not careful) Last night, we nailed them down on first (well, re-)takes!

Having finished the rhythm stuff, we had a little live jam session in the studio with Jake on piano and me on acoustic, mostly improvising around a theme we have planned for the outro of the last song, and thus the whole promo - some of it may even make the final cut ;) Just jamming around and having a couple of glasses of red helped bring our stress levels down nicely, and today we're ready ad eager to fill in the blanks: first the remaining acoustics, and then the leads and solos.

We should be finished tonight!

I was first acquainted to this song after hearing it at the close of the film “The Beach

I was first acquainted to this song after hearing it at the close of the film "The Beach". At the time I didn't pursue the track as I didn't know who the track was by, or realise how awesome it was, which is why it took me a while to research and rediscover it. After hearing the tune of the softly played guitar at a restaurant diner in Prague (don't I sound incredibly cultured right now...) and struggling to figure out where that soothing, tropical sound was from, I did my research and found it to be by the same people who brought out the hits "Sunchyme" (which hit number two in the UK charts back in that magical time when Top of the Pops was still being shown on a Thursday night) and "Carnival de Paris" (which featured as a theme song to the Football World Cup in 1998). Anyway, once again it's a really chilled out cathartic sounding tune, one that fit the closing to the motion picture "The Beach" perfectly.

I decided to share the previous song after hearing a live set performed by Coldplay last month (sorry for the excess Coldplay posts) when they did their new live rendition of their hit "Yellow". I've managed to get my hands on a recording of it, and you can hear the definite similarities between the two tracks, both managing to convey the same feelings of inspiring, hopeful and happiness in their sound. And both definitely worth checking out.

So I learnt to play guitar a great many years ago, but I never stuck with it. “Learnt to play

So I learnt to play guitar a great many years ago, but I never stuck with it. "Learnt to play guitar" is probably a bit of a stretch actually, all I can remember to do now is tune the bloody thing and strum a G chord. I always found it kind of confusing the way notes were scattered on the fretboard. There is a logical order to it but as a piano player where the keys are situated linearly in front of you in a single row going to a completely new thing is kind of weird. This wasn't really the main reason of course, it was just hard to persist with something you suck at and don't see quick results with. But this time I will try to persist.

I will be taking notes throughout my lonely afternoon adventure.

First up, I need a guitar. I had an acoustic lying around, an 'Essex Custom Guitar'. It was cheap as chips and has a nice sound to it considering its bargain basement price. Cherry red highlights at the edge of its wood body if you're into that sort of thing. This was bought in... 2002? 2003? so about half a decade ago, and the steel strings have yet to be changed which shows just how much this thing has seen use. It's covered with dust as I pull it from out from under the bed.

Second, I need a pick. I did not have a pick, so I cut one out of an old World of Warcraft 60-day prepaid card. Now I have a pick. Hey I'm not jamming with Zeppelin alright? A pick's a pick.

When I said I could tune the thing before I lied. I know the fat string closest to my face when I hold it is an E so I tuned that with the piano but the rest I'm not so sure about.

I hit Google, Home of Information. Google says to tune to the fifth fret of the string above it, except the second last one which is done to the fourth fret of the one that preceded it. DONE. Finally. Sorry if all this extraneous detail is needless but as you can tell I am bored.

Time to learn a song. My fellow blogger Konrad who can actually play the guitar tells me that 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' is a good easy one to play with 3 or 4 chords. I look it up on Google who tells me I can either play the Guns N Roses one or a Bob Dylan one. They're probably the same right? I'm not that big into the Guns N Roses. (I can however tear up 'Sweet Child O' Mine' on Guitar Hero 2, Expert thank you very much). I also like Dr. Pepper so you keep working with that new album, Axl. Anyway I thought 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' was by Eric Clapton till Konrad told me otherwise. I've probably just confused it with 'Tears In Heaven'. Why do I write on a music blog when I don't know shit? I'll stick with good ol' Dylan just in case there's anything different.

Google for tabs. Every guitar site says that they are the biggest collection of tabs on the internet, which cannot possibly be true for everybody. Unless they all have the exact same stuff. I decide to go with Chordie who have chord changes alongside a lyrics sheet and they tell you how to play them.

Problem: My memory of this song is hazy at best, I know how to sing the chorus but I have no idea what the right way to strum is. The internet is speed capped so looking around for a mp3 will be like pushing daggers into my head. WHATEVER. Let's learn the chords first. Am7, C, D, G.

Some time passes.

I tried practising my Am7, C, D, G chords. I can do G fine, D sort of, C somewhat, but Am7 is giving me real difficulty and sounds like I'm blowfishing a melodica (or fucking an accordion). My fingers keep getting in the way and muting other strings so I don't get a nice consistent sound, and even when I do it so I get a clean tone off each string, it sounds kind of off.

I've retuned. The top 2 strings have gone out of tune real quick, maybe because it's a cheapo guitar. I did that whole dealio when tuning a guitar where you tune up a bit, then back down so it doesn't go out of tune as easily. Or is it supposed to be the other way around? Bah.

I am an idiot. I don't have to arch my index finger over the thinner E string to play this because that string is held down further up anyway by the ring finger. Blargh.

OK fingers hurting now, wrist feels out of whack. But I will persist.

G sounds fine, D sounds fine, C sounds alright, Am7 still sounds really weird. The last string just rings funny. I will persist.

You know how I said this guitar has gone 5+ years without breaking any of its original strings? It just did. The final E string broke (the thin one) and snapped me on the hand. It stings, like the sting of failure. Nevertheless one string down I will persist somehow.

This actually makes it easier now that I can rest off on one string but it makes all the chords sound kinda incomplete and I need to slightly rejig my muscle memory now that I don't have to bother with that E string. I'm tempted to turn the thing into a makeshift acoustic bass. They're easier to play right? Nevertheless I will persist.

I've started looking for a copy of the song, practising my chords more while waiting for the pages to load.

Clapton does play this song (as well)! I WAS RIGHT.

Now I'm going to listen to this song on Last.fm and see if I can get it to work somehow

Switched to strumming with my fingers because the "pick" makes it sound excessively loud and bright and I don't want my complete abuse of Dylan's material echoing around the neighbourhood. Dylan fans in my experience are pretty hardcore and they may actually come kill me. If they do come I'll tell them I was learning to play Guns N Roses.

Waiting for the page to load. Now buffering. Currently tapping out a funky groove with my fat E string.

Last.fm only gives me 29 seconds of a track, even one this old and (I thought) ubiquitous. And every time it has to rebuffer itself so it plays for five seconds, starts buffering for ten and plays another five.

I cannot find this track anywhere, at least not the Dylan one which I'm so intent on getting for some reason, so I'm settling for Youtube.

Aaand Youtube is fucking me. "This video is currently unavailable" my ass. It is right there! I open up the Myspace link and click on the link off that which usually makes these goddamn videos work. What the hell is up with Youtube lately anyway?

BLaaargh! JUST WORK! Why is everything going against me? String breaks, then I can't find the song online. What's next? Is the neck going to come off? What gives?

Half an hour later I still cannot find a copy of 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door'. HOW THE FUCK IS THIS POSSIBLE. My roommate who likes Dylan only has the 'Blood On The Tracks' album for some reason. What the hell!? I KNOW YOU HAVE THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION BITCH! I borrowed it off you when we were staying in college! Why did I have to be the one person in the world who doesn't know exactly how Knockin' On Heaven's door goes?? Why doesn't the universe want me to play this song?

AHAHAHHAHA. Got this one working:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4a_QPJrMY8g

Some time passes.

Well I have made satisfactory amount of progress for one and a half hours work. It's not at a level where I would, say, run away and become a town troubadour. Nor would I consider making a Youtube video. I probably wouldn't make it into The Band. But it's still satisfactory. Will I persist further?

No.

Last week Joyce and I drove out to Atascadero to a horse ranch owned by the family of local-hero jazz singer Inga Swearingen for a night of beautiful songs and world rhythms. This inspiring house concert was a double-bill split equally between Inga and "post-folk" vocal group VOCO. The appeal of a house concert for a folkie like me is its intimacy: the ability to hear natural, unamplified voices and instruments so close you could reach out and touch them. In this case, we got two bands for the price of one, and refreshments to boot!

The show opened with Inga Swearingen, supported by her sister Britta (also a brilliant vocalist) as well as her guitarist and bassist, both wicked good jazz players. I could go on for days about how good these folks are, but I'm no jazz expert and I'm here to introduce you to your new favorite band: VOCO.

Based in the LA area and led by singer Moira Smiley, VOCO consists of Jess Basta (vocals), Christine Enns (vocals), and Jessica Catron (vocals, cello). Moira sings, of course, and plays accordion and banjo, and all four ladies do some amazing body percussion. Their repertoire spans a broad spectrum of world roots sources, including the eastern European and Appalachian traditions. Most of their set featured acapella numbers with complex harmonies and interesting time signatures, with occasional accompaniment by cello, banjo, and accordion. By what I've heard so far, their new record will be a grand collection of joyous Americana-flavored songs. Its due out by fall and the working title is "Circle, Square, Diamond, and Flag," after the symbols used to notate shape-note tablature.

My favorite song was an original piece penned by Moira and appearing on her solo record "Rua" --- a song called "The House that Jack Built." Moira teaches vocal workshops across the USA, and she ended the evening by calling up Inga and Britta for an extended audience-participation vocal improvisation. All in all, it was a wonderful night of hearing new music, making new friends, and just feeling alive. Isn't that what folk music is all about?

I have been extremely busy this week, haven't had any time to post! I am working on my history class right now, taking a short break before getting back to more outlines. Just wanted to make a quick update.

I have found my colored waxed hemp :) It makes me so happy! I made a few bracelets and necklaces this week. I must say, they look amazing. I am improving and I love that I can see the progress. I also got the COOLEST bracelet as a late birthday present today. It is the KILLOLA USB bracelet. The bracelet is made by www.aderra.net and it contains the brand new Killola CD [I am the messer] and a few videos and pictures! I love it so so much. I do think that USB bracelets could...and should be a big hit with bigger named bands. They are a great way to promote a CD and they are just fun all around.

Killola is the band I want you guys to hear. Lisa has a very interesting voice and their music just makes you want to get up and dance! This is one of my favorite songs, on acoustic.

In the last 3 sessions we were able to knock out 1.5 songs.
Rich's song, Million Years, is all done. Background guitars, vocals and all.

The ".5" is Joe's Rocket Ride.
We laid down rhythm guitar and main vocal last night, and hope to finish it up at our next session (next week).

Amazing how we've come along in this process and it's very exciting to see how close we are to the release of the album.

Since Rocket Ride is the last song that we're recording, its now time to look at the specifics of the album... reviewing each song one for changes, mastering, song order, final song names, finalizing album over, lyric sheet, sleeve, etc.

At this point we're pushing to get everything done to release album in August.
Wish us luck!

This acoustic duo have been highly praised by everyone thats anyone and i've largely ignored them due to the word "acoustic" which in my head means SHIT. Not so for this gang. Just heard their song Margie (in Irish no less, check it out below) and it blew me away. Check them out on Bebo http://www.bebo.com/heathersdublin
